Speaker 1 (00:15):
Happy Friday, Happy Happy, happy Friday.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Right.
Speaker 3 (00:18):
I hope your Friday is going how you want it
to go, headed in the direction of the weekend.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Good afternoon, everybody.
Speaker 3 (00:27):

is Craigway. Thanks very much for joining us here. I
always say this, I'll say it again as I do
every Friday. If Friday, in the traditional work week calendar
falls that way for you, meaning this being the end
(00:48):
of the work week and you're headed into the weekend,
good on you, Good for you, and hope you enjoy
the weekend. For those of you for whom Friday is
merely the middle part of the week, maybe your work
week started on Tuesday.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Win.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
I hope we can get you downhill toward that today.
And for those of you who may be starting off
your work week today, let's hope it gets off to
a good start for you. I hope it goes well.
We're happy to be with you and get you ready
for another weekend.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
How shall I say it?
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Of climactic football, we had some last night, found to
be some tonight on the college level, and then the
NFL takes center stage tomorrow Sunday and Monday night, so
glad to talk about all of that. And also this
is January, so there must be some off season baseball
(01:40):
going on, not the games, but the work behind the scenes,
free agent signings, comings and goings. Our good friend Jean
Watson from the Chicago White Sox front office as their
director or player personnel, will join us our MLB insider
in the three o'clock hour, we'll visit with him, and
then in the four o'clock hour we have one of
(02:01):
our periodical visits with our good friends Cedric Golden of
the Austin American Statesman. We'll get his thoughts on the
college football playoff, the Longhorns, the portal, all that stuff,
and also give him a bit of congratulations. Cedric this
week named the Texas Sports Rider of the Year by
the National Sports Media Association. So we'll visit, was said,
(02:22):
coming up in the four o'clock hour. The producer of
the program is Jay Herman. So were you wound up
watching the game last night?
Speaker 2 (02:30):
I did.
Speaker 4 (02:30):
I In in between dealing with some maintenance issues in
the apartment, I had the game on and yeah, lived
up to I think the exciting preview that we gave
it yesterday, And as it turns out, I did not
know more than the.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
Odds makers per usual. That's all right, now, I didn't.
I didn't place any wagers on the game.
Speaker 4 (02:52):
But on the show, I said, how could how could
they say it's going to be high scoring and pick
Miami to win?
Speaker 1 (02:58):
And there you go, That's what happened.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
Yeah, And it didn't look like it would be that way,
certainly through the better part of three quarters. The fourth
quarter was what was crazy, with all the lead changes
and the scoring that happened there in that final quarter.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
So that that happened there.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
Your apartment, by the way, it's not like the apartment
depicted in the bar Naked Lady song Old apartment where
there's all kinds of stuff breaking down and things like that.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
Is it.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
No, No, just a simple little leak under the sink.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
So I'm hoping you.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
Didn't get any flooding out of it, did you?
Speaker 1 (03:27):
No?
Speaker 4 (03:27):
But I I had to dry it up.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
But it's a bad smell that it's a whole it's
a whole situation. It's going to get dealt with. You
had some standing water to deal with or build puddling. Yeah,
some wet floorboards and yeah, yeah, not good.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
So you've got people on it now, I hope. So
I'm actively it's a developing story.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
Okay, I hope people are on it before the weekend
they've been made aware.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
Okay, all right, very good.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
Uh We're We're also going to hear from Dimico Ryans,
the UH Texans head coach. And of course they played
the last of the wild card weekend games. That'll be
the Monday night matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers in Pittsburgh.
So and you can hear that game here on thirteen
under this on Monday evening beginning at six forty five.
But we'll hear from Dimiko coming up in the show
(04:18):
as well. And then the beat goes on for the
Texas women's basketball team, number two in the country and
looking every bit the part of that. And absolutely, you know,
launched Auburn into the sun last night beat him ninety
seven to thirty six, and it was it was lopsided
(04:38):
from the first minute. Jake said he tuned in and
it was twenty two to one when he tuned in, right.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
Pretty much, I was like, it's like rubbing my eyes no,
that's right, Okay, good.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
Yeah it was. It was for nothing Texas. Then it
was four to one after Auburn. He hit one of
two free throws and the next thing you knew, it
was twenty four to one. That they went on a
to I need to nothing, Ryan. It was twenty seven
to five into the first court and it ever looked
back and went on and went that one. Now, let
me say this, Auburn is a team in transition, new
(05:10):
head coach, influx, new players, that kind of thing. It's
similar to what the Texas men are going through right now,
but on a more difficult scale. But what the Longhorn
men's program is going through right now with what Sean
Miller is trying to get turned around, and they have
a huge challenge tomorrow night at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloose, Alabama.
They'll take on the thirteenth ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, an
(05:32):
angry Alabama team coming off the loss that Alabama had
at Vanderbilt to an unbeaten Vanderbilt team. Both the Vanderbilt
man and women still unbeaten. The Vandy women won handily
over Missouri last night, so that those are programs to
keep an eye on as well. But first things first,
(05:54):
and the Vandy men will be here next Wednesday, but
the Alabama crime and tied up next for the Texas men,
that's tomorrow evening. You can hear that game here on
thirteen under the Zone six thirty year time at a
seven o'clock tip. It's also available in ninety eight point
one FMKVET. So that's that's where all of that is.
But we begin with college football. And I had the
(06:18):
game on my laptop while I was calling the women's game,
and I'll be honest with you, it became a little
bit easier for me to follow what was going on
in the football game because the basketball game got so
lopsided all of the news keep you know, keep the
train on the tracks in terms of the broadcast, because
(06:39):
Vic Schafer's team was handling its business quite nicely. And
we'll hear from Vic coming up as well. We'll hear
from him here in a few minutes. But it was
it was quite the thriller last night where Miami led
seventeen thirteen to the half, Ole miss came down, got
a banked in field gold and pulled it within a
(06:59):
point at seventeen sixteen. I think one critical point came
there in the fourth quarter early when they had it
down inside the five yard line and could not get
it into the end zone, had to settle for another
field goal and put the Rebels up nineteen seventeen. But
(07:20):
it set the stage because that was the first of
I think four league changes in the final quarter. Because
Miami marches down the field day score, ole Miss marches
down the field day score. Miami comes back down and
gets what proves to be the game winning touchdown Carson
Beck on a run back to the wide side of
the field, scoring with I think eighteen seconds to go.
Speaker 1 (07:39):
In the game.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
And even then Trinidad Chambliss got ole Miss almost in
the position to try to win the game, got down
around the thirty five yard line and on that throw
into the end zone. Yeah, there was some bumping and
shoving going on both sides. The pass would have been
very difficult to catch anyway, So I think that was
(07:59):
a good no call. You do, I do?
Speaker 1 (08:01):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (08:02):
I thought that was past interference.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
Well, first of all, as you probably know, they're almost
never going to call in on hail Mary's that's right.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
It rarely happens on that.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Secondly, the ball is going at a missile speed right
at the back of the end zone.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
It was going to be extremely difficult to.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
Make that catch, even if he hadn't had a defender
on him.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Oh, I'll have to watch the throw again. I thought
it was a catchable ball.
Speaker 1 (08:25):
Catchable, yes, probable, I don't know, sure.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
Yeah, it's going to be difficult. Let's hear from the coaches.
First of all. Pete Golding, the head coach of Ole Miss,
obviously disappointed but proud of what his guys had done
to get it to this point.
Speaker 5 (08:42):
Obviously disappointed from the outcome.
Speaker 6 (08:45):
You know, chance I was in the fourth and go
up late and didn't play real well on defense all night.
But to be up in the fourth and have an
opportunity to to close it out, you know, on that stage.
Then we'll all look back on it and get better
from But I can't tell you how proud I am
of this group. They never panicked, they never flinch. They
(09:08):
were led by special young man. Two of them are
sitting up here, and you know, I remember looking at
them at halftime and just looking in their eyes, and.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
They didn't panic. And we had been here before and
we just.
Speaker 6 (09:20):
Uh, we didn't make enough plays when we needed to.
From a coaches standpoint, we got to find a way
to put them in a better position late in the
game and close it out.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
But uh, super proud of this group.
Speaker 6 (09:30):
This is a group that created this legacy for this
team and an expectation for this program. That what I
told them in the locker room that we're pissed off
in a semi final game because we feel like we
should have won the game because we didn't play our
best and we didn't coach our best, And so really
proud of their effort and proud.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
Of the year they had.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
All Right, that's from the Old miss side of things.
How about the Miami side of things? Mario Crystalbaul who
has been building it and building it there and a
lot of frustration in recent years and things of that nature.
So he was had if that final touchdown drive capped
by the Carson back run into the end zone sum
(10:06):
up what he's tried to accomplish in his time at Miami.
Speaker 7 (10:10):
I think it's more of a reflection of our players
and their DNA, the way that they're wired, how they
came into the program, and how they've continued to.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
Develop and evolve.
Speaker 7 (10:20):
And so it almost seems like the tougher it gets,
the better we play, and it's a testament to them,
to their resilience and their will.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
Yesterday on the program, we had you know, tech submissions,
among those from one of our regular listeners, and I'm
always thankful for his listenership, even though he's he burns
hot and is and he's usually angry at sark and
and exhibited that yesterday. But his point was that about
(10:52):
all the penalties that Texas had during the course of
the year, Miami had a slew of them last night.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
And yet overcame it.
Speaker 3 (10:58):
And and I think I mentioned yesterday the long words
were able to overcome I think ten penalties they had
in the Citrus Bowl to get the win. Good teams
can overcome penalties. Great teams avoid them and normally don't
commit them. But championship level teams can rise above them,
and Miami was able to do that. And Crystal Ball
(11:21):
was asked, what did it take to become the resilient
team they become that can overcome a slew and rash
of penalties like they had to overcome last night.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
You know, honestly, I don't Football is.
Speaker 7 (11:33):
Incomplicated people are, and I think when you start jumping
off sides and get some of these pre staff penalties,
you complicate things for yourself.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
I think it's the simplicity of these guys.
Speaker 7 (11:43):
They know exactly who they are, and they know what
it took to get us to this point, and they
were not settling for getting to this point. Just to
get here, want to know was the objective, and they
weren't going to let anything get in the way.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
So all they did was do what they.
Speaker 7 (11:58):
Do every single day on a Green Tree practice field
and did it to an elite level to finish the game.
And again I can't speak more highly or probably enough
of them and their resilience.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
Crystal Ball when he was on with Scott vampeld after
the game, and they've they've established a report.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
He's had him on a few times this year, and
when he.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
Had him on, they repeated that mantra of we didn't
come this far just to come this far, that kind
of thing that's become a popular phrase too. Didn't you
do a deal the other day on the overused words
that that that what are being killed off or something
like that.
Speaker 4 (12:35):
The words that the words that should be left in
twenty twenty five.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
Yeah, according to who was it, it was a webster.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
It's a college. No, Lake Superior State, Lake Superior University.
Speaker 3 (12:48):
Yeah, Okay, they're up in Minnesota. Okay. So they're saying
that they had this list of words that said like
my bad was one, and I agree with him. There's
there's some that are like that, my bad, and there's
some other things like that. I think one phrase could
be we didn't come this far just to come this far.
That that's become very very popular. But it came up
(13:10):
again last night. And and let's keep in mind the
fact that Miami was basically the final team in the field,
certainly the last a large team, you know, if you
don't count the two G five's that get in to
Lane and James Madison by the rules, really and truly
the last team to get in the fields Miami. There
was all that debate about whether it should have been
(13:31):
Miami or Notre Dame, you know, and then that thing.
And so they get in and they get in as
the ten seed, and they go to College Station and win,
and then after that they go to Arlington and they
beat Ohio State and the Cotton Bowl. Then they go
to Glendale and they beat Ole Miss in the Fiesta Bowl.
(13:54):
Now they're going to play on their own home field
that they haven't been had a home game in five weeks.
I think he said something like the five straight games
away from hard Rock Stadium, and so now they're going
to go back home to play in the National championship game.
Speaker 1 (14:09):
So in doing this.
Speaker 3 (14:11):
Roundabout way and being the ten seed and fighting their
way through road games and stuff like that, Crystal Bowls
asked what does this say about his team and on
a larger scale, this playoff format in college football?
Speaker 7 (14:26):
I mean for us, I guess it's the simplicity of
we just let our play on the field take care
of itself and answer any and all questions. I don't
think you can. I know a lot of times I
think narratives take over. I don't know, popularity, social, the
media in general, and this game's never been about that,
(14:48):
and I think these guys proved that that. After November first,
sixty nine days ago, I think is what it was.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
They made a simple.
Speaker 7 (14:54):
Decision to bring energy every single day to the building
and just get a little bit better and find a
way to be one. I know, and you know we're
we haven't been home in a long time. You know,
we've been on the road for five stray games. And
it's because of their work, their commitment, their belief and
their trust and the confidence they having each other.
Speaker 3 (15:12):
And now they get to play for national championship on
their home field, to be the first time in the
playoff era that's happened now. You know, back in the day,
so to speak, teams got a chance to play pretty
much at their adjunct home stadiums in games that would
qualify for the national championship. Miami did it with a
(15:33):
win over Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, where they played
their home games, that was truly their home field. But
that was the pre playoff era. It's not happened in
the playoff era until it happens coming up a week
from Monday, ten days from now, when Miami plays either
Indiana or Oregon. They meet tonight in the Chick fil
(15:54):
A Peach Bowl in at Atlanta.
Speaker 1 (15:56):
We'll have more on that a little later on.
Speaker 3 (15:58):
Up next, we'll hear from czechas women's head coach Vick Schaeffery,
and we also have inconceivable you know what that means
on Friday. Hey, maybe it's apropos. Since Miami has qualified,
we should have Florida man right, sure thing, all right?
That and more coming up on a Friday afternoon right
here on Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone end
where you always listen to us for free on the Irradio.
(16:18):
Appy Shopper checked it by Sid Barry. She blocked the
shot of Tabia Harris into the front court department stops
pops it drops from twelve in Malane Hartman with eight
and second quarter points.
Speaker 1 (16:34):
Texas leeds forty one to nine.
Speaker 8 (16:37):
Welcome back to the Craig Way Show and the Voice
of the Longhorns Craig Way. Follow Craig on social media
at Horn Voice.
Speaker 3 (16:47):
Here on a Friday, coming off of Thursday night in Texas.
Win for the Texas women's basketball team, number two in
the country now eighteen and oh with a ninety seven
thirty six win over Auburn and Kyle Oldacre had the
largest of the contributions in those and that's coming off
the bench where she had twenty three points, but Justice
(17:07):
Carleton had seventeen and nine. We'll hear from Justice a
little later on in the program. Rory Harmon, Madison Booker,
the usual cast of characters. So Texas is now eighteen
and zero. Vick Schaeffer, by his own admission, can be
coach grumbles at times and not be completely and entirely
happy with what he saw, but by and large, I
(17:30):
think he was pretty pleased.
Speaker 9 (17:31):
Here is some of his thoughts following the game. I'm
just really proud of them. I thought they played unselfish.
They shared the ball with twenty three assists on thirty
six baskets. We shot free throws well tonight for the
first time in a while, and so I thought Justice
was really special early on. She came ready to play.
(17:54):
That's the challenge that I have with her is just
the consistency piece, because I think when you get that
from her every night, it changes our team. And thought
Rory was really good. Seven assistant, no turnovers, three steals.
She's getting closer and closer to two things in you know,
our five flayers seven for nine in seven for eight,
(18:16):
So when you go fourteen for seventeen at the five spots,
you got a chance every night. So just proud of
our kids. I thought they played really hard. I thought
defensively they were locked in. We just had some mental
lapses where we turned the ball over a little bit,
and we had talked about it with this team, when
you turn the ball over, it's going to be a
(18:37):
lay up the other way. And they were averaging twenty
points in transition, and we talked about.
Speaker 10 (18:42):
It, let's just cut that to ten, and we held
them to nine.
Speaker 9 (18:45):
So I thought our transition was good, our secondary break
was good, and obviously paint points fifty eight, that's a
good number down there.
Speaker 1 (18:54):
So Rory and.
Speaker 9 (18:55):
Brie were really good running a point for us and
running the show. And again, really proud of our inside players.
So on to the next one, giving God to glory
for number eighteen.
Speaker 5 (19:09):
And.
Speaker 9 (19:10):
Obviously we got to get ready for a big one
on Sunday on the road.
Speaker 3 (19:16):
Next, vict was asked what went into his team really
ramping up its defensive performance. That sound like that kind
of almost sounds like a broken record, because they played
really good defense on pretty much a night in, night
out basis. But for the purposes of this particular contest,
what went into the performance.
Speaker 9 (19:34):
I'm proud of them defensively. We forced twenty six turnovers.
You know, we had thirteen steals. I think we had
maybe seven and a half. But I just thought we
did some really good things defensively, and you know, again,
I think Auburn's way better than they played tonight.
Speaker 10 (19:53):
It's life on the road, and you know, it just happens.
Speaker 9 (20:00):
So they've obviously won eleven games already this year and
been in some really close games, and it just again,
I'm really impressed with them.
Speaker 10 (20:11):
A coach is doing a great job with those kids.
Play so hard.
Speaker 9 (20:14):
But we played really well tonight. I mean, at the
end of the day, there's no way around it. You
have to acknowledge the fact how well we played and
how consistent we were for most of the night.
Speaker 3 (20:25):
Shaefer was then asked, you know, the fact that they
got such a huge lead so quickly enabled him to
go deep into his bench, which is a good thing
as he's starting to get players healthy again, like Taya Sidbury,
and they hope to get a Leah Crump back soon.
Speaker 1 (20:39):
So he's able to use.
Speaker 3 (20:42):
Nine, ten, eleven players, even he was twelve last night
in the game. And how about his thoughts on being
able to give some of the starters some rest.
Speaker 9 (20:51):
Yeah, I told Jordan, I gave her, you know, got
her out tonight. She only played twenty six minutes. Rory
played twenty three. And you know, but those kids are
all competitive. You know they want to play. But you know,
we we wanted to, We wanted to try to. I
wanted to try to give them a little bit of rest.
And I won't bust them too bad tomorrow because we
(21:11):
do have to get ready to play on Sunday. But
I feel like our kids are in great shape. I
feel like Jordan Lee's in the best shape of anybody
on our team. She's the energizer Bunny and Rory never
gets tired. She's never gotten tired in five years. So
but it's an opportunity to rest her and protect.
Speaker 10 (21:27):
Her a little bit. And and so.
Speaker 9 (21:32):
You know, I don't know winsay last time she's not
played the last fourteen minutes of a game, but.
Speaker 10 (21:37):
It ain't been very often.
Speaker 1 (21:39):
Now.
Speaker 3 (21:40):
Both Kyle oldacro off the bench and the start of
Brey of Cunningham were important factors in controlling the glass
that could have been predicted given the fact that Auburn
was a bit undersized. They're going to see much larger
teams out, especially the next two games with LSU on
the road and then South Carolina on the road. So
how important is front court play going to be in
(22:02):
upcoming SEC contests.
Speaker 9 (22:04):
You know, we talked about all the time you win
with guard play, but you win championships with guard play
in size and our size, you know played well and
I they had between the three of them, Justice at.
Speaker 10 (22:17):
Five, four and Kyla eight.
Speaker 9 (22:20):
So that's seventeen offensive rebounds between those three. You can
throw Sidbery in with one, and so you know, those
kids are important. And again I thought Justice had a
good workout, She had a good shoe run today, she
had a good practice yesterday on the offensive boards, and
you know, she was big for us when we played
South Carolina the first time getting on the offensive boards.
Speaker 10 (22:43):
I think she had five in that game.
Speaker 9 (22:44):
And so when she's got that motor going like she
had it tonight, you know, it really makes the difference
with our team. So I'm proud of our size. I'm
proud of our energy and effort to get on the boards.
We talked about how we needed to really try to
attack them a little bit there, and boy we did.
We got twenty offensive boards there out rebounding numb thirty one.
Speaker 3 (23:05):
One thing we've heard VIC talk about is maintaining the
level of performance, the continuity even as they continue to
substitute that there shouldn't be a drop off that the
old thing about standard being the standard stuff. So how
does he assess the continuity through substitution in that contest?
Speaker 10 (23:24):
I'd say it was outstanding with our entire team.
Speaker 9 (23:27):
I mean, I thought that our continuity through substitution the entire.
Speaker 10 (23:31):
Night was really good.
Speaker 9 (23:34):
So but especially at five, you know, when you ask
specifically about them, I think both those kids play off
each other, and you know they ham an egg at
pretty good. And so again, it's nice to have that
two headed monster.
Speaker 7 (23:46):
Man.
Speaker 9 (23:47):
I'm just telling you you're going to need it and
the big ones and you know, those kids played really
well then I kind of had twenty three and Brad
had fifteen, So gives you a chance every night.
Speaker 1 (23:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (24:00):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (24:00):
By the way, I don't have any problem with ham
and egging it with it, with it with that phrase.
Speaker 1 (24:05):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (24:05):
And hopefully the folks at Lake Superior State won't you know,
put that on their exit list, uh, saying it's overused
and killed and whatever and all that kind of stuff.
Speaker 2 (24:14):
And if and if they did, then you'd say, oh,
my bad.
Speaker 3 (24:16):
Yeah right, you know they're bad, because there's nothing wrong
with that friend, that, by the way, is a baseball
colloquial phrase for a double.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
Play, a ham and egger.
Speaker 2 (24:26):
I've never heard that.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
Oh yeah, keep more lett all all all manner of
old school baseball. People will say that's a ham and egger,
a six four to three double play, and and and
on the air.
Speaker 1 (24:36):
I did this back several years ago. I said, let
me ask you something.
Speaker 3 (24:39):
I said, it's just me, but isn't bacon and eggs
more common than ham and eggs? So shouldn't a six
four three be a bacon and egger? And he said, ya,
see what you just did there. It's a mouthful to say.
It's easiers say ham and egger six' four to, three you.
(25:01):
KNOW i, said, yeah but it seems like ham and
egg should be four six. Three you, know it's a
little less common than the six four three because more,
PEOPLE i, think if you did a, survey have bacon
and eggs than ham and.
Speaker 2 (25:11):
Egg this is some real inside, Baseball yeah.
Speaker 3 (25:14):
Exactly, yeah we get into these kind of conversations on the.
Air one thing that's also quite noticeable was the crowds
when we got to the arena last. Night Kathy harst
AND i were wondering what kind of crowd there would
be with college football playoff going on and all this
sort of, stuff and it's Early january and it's a
week night and all that kind of. Stuff he had
eighty nine hundred, there eighty nine hundred. There that's unheard
(25:38):
of in prior years For texas women's.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
Basketball now they sold some of the student section tickets
right to the general.
Speaker 3 (25:44):
Public they, did and there we're students there as. Well
now school is still. Out you have only to look
down at the alumni band to see.
Speaker 7 (25:50):
That.
Speaker 3 (25:51):
Uh AND i asked one, guy gray haired, dude it's in,
there and he, said, well we're, trying we're we're having
fun with. It and they do a pretty good.
Speaker 2 (25:57):
Job, YEAH, tv it looked pretty.
Speaker 3 (25:59):
Full, yeah, yeah. Exactly sound. Again, yeah the demand did.
Well And i've said this. Before this is my twenty
ninth year doing the play by, play AND i can
remember some very lean years attendance, wise even when the
team was, good when the attendance was somewhere between twenty
five hundred and four thousand on a, weekend might be
(26:20):
less than that on a.
Speaker 1 (26:21):
Weeknight no longer the.
Speaker 3 (26:22):
Case they have over six six hundred season tickets, sold
and for them to have that kind of a crowd
on A thursday, night that's pretty. Impressive So vick was
asked to compare the crowds that he's seeing now to
when he first arrived on.
Speaker 1 (26:39):
Campus i've always, said you, know.
Speaker 9 (26:44):
You can have all the gimmicks you want to try
to put people in the, building they ain't coming unless
you got a good. Product and you, KNOW i think
we've got a great. Product we've got great. Kids they
played the game the right. Way they play really, Hard
they're fun to. WATCH i, mean they shared the ball
so well, tonight played. Together they have great chemistry with each.
(27:04):
Other our benches over there having a great, time you,
know supporting their. Teammates so it is quite different than
those first couple of years in, there WHEN i mean
you could whisper on press row almost everybody could hear.
You but you, know that's part of building a, program you,
know and building your fan. Base and you, know we
(27:24):
had eighty nine hundred, tonight and there's a pretty good
football GAME i guess on tonight or a big. One
but you, know our fans were our fans. Tonight i'm
really proud of.
Speaker 6 (27:33):
Them i'm.
Speaker 9 (27:33):
APPRECIATIVE i know our kids are appreciative other people that
were in the building, tonight and they make such a
great home court. ADVANTAGE i, mean they probably got us
through that last game when we weren't playing very well
down the, stretch and so.
Speaker 1 (27:48):
It's.
Speaker 9 (27:48):
Fun you, Know i'm happy for our kids, REALLY i,
mean they deserve to play in front of a crowd.
Speaker 10 (27:53):
Like that night in and night.
Speaker 9 (27:55):
Out and you know when people walk out of this
even after these kids, PLAY i know they are proud of.
Them you, know they're telling little their, daughters their sons
SAY i want you to play like so and. SO
i want you to play like so and, So and
that's what to, me that's part of what we.
Speaker 3 (28:15):
Do so eighteen and Zero texas women that play AT
Lsu sunday afternoon's gonna be a huge. Matchup we'll have
it for you here on The zone one forty five
pregame start, time two o'clock tip from The Marriagage Assembly.
Center up, next we get to A friday edition Of
inconceivable here on Sports RADIO am thirteen under The. Zone
(28:47):
second hour of the program here On Sports RADIO am
thirteen Hundred zone here on This Friday Craig ran alongside
the Producer Jay.
Speaker 1 (28:55):
Kerman glad to have you with. Us coming up in
a few, minutes we'll talk some.
Speaker 3 (28:59):
Base, ball to have the thoughts Of Gene, watson OUR
mlb inside from The Chicago White sox front, office talk
about some of the free agency and the free agents to.
Watch we'll hit him with some of the biggest names
there and his thoughts on all of. That we're also
going to hear From. Demiico ryan's coming up here in
(29:21):
just a few. Moments THE nfl playoffs do.
Speaker 1 (29:25):
Get.
Speaker 3 (29:26):
Underway Wild Card weekend is upon us starting, tomorrow with
the first game being The rams and The panthers in THE,
nfc and followed by The bears and The. Packers by the,
way that's a what do you call? It prime video.
Speaker 2 (29:45):
Seven.
Speaker 3 (29:45):
O'clock, Yeah so make sure you're if you don't have
That prime video and you want to watch, it make
sure you get somewhere where you can watch, it because
otherwise it's. Subscription AND i know that makes a lot
of people, mad, say, WELL i hope it flops. Up
it's never going to flop because there's enough people to
want to watch the playoff. Game they're going to pay
(30:06):
For Prime, video and many already have the subscription, anyway
So i'll never forget it WAS i think it was
two years. Ago, yeah two years. Ago remember that playoff
game between The chiefs and The dolphins where it was
just unbelievably frigid cold again said about eight degrees something like.
Speaker 2 (30:23):
That it Was miami had no, chance.
Speaker 3 (30:25):
RIGHT i remember watching a lot of that on a
bus going From, Morgantown West, virginia down to where the
charter flights take, off little airport in a little place Called,
Bridgeport West. Virginia i've explained that deal, before how that's
it's Near. Clarksburg and the reason that you can't fly
(30:46):
a big plane Into, morgantown which is the i think
the third largest city in the state and host of
the home of the largest land grand institution in state
Of West. Virginia but you can't fly a big charter
jet in, there only like small like turboprops and things like,
that because you're basically setting it down on top of the.
Speaker 1 (31:05):
Mountain so.
Speaker 3 (31:07):
And yet here in this little bitty Community, bridgeport outside Of,
clarksburg there's like an eight thousand foot long.
Speaker 1 (31:13):
Runway how does that.
Speaker 3 (31:15):
Happen and the genesis THAT i had to explained to
me By TONY Coaredi West virginia's play by play voice
was that years, ago the federal government was in search
of where to put its New National Fingerprint bureau and
land was too expensive what was available inside The, beltway
and so they didn't know what to do with. It
(31:35):
and a group From, Clarksburg West virginia, said will lay
out an airport runway where they had a tiny little
old airport Called North Central West Virginia Regional.
Speaker 1 (31:46):
Airport, oh the old three.
Speaker 3 (31:48):
Directions, yeah we'll lay it out for you if you'll.
Do and they went and sure, enough and the land was,
cheap and they went and that's where The National Fingerprinting bureau.
Speaker 1 (31:57):
Is It's, Clarksburg West.
Speaker 3 (31:58):
Virginia so what happens is every day there's a regional
jet that takes off with like one hundred employees or
whatever and. Lands it's like a twenty minute hop over
The Appalachian mountains From Reagan international Into, clarksburg and then
they're bust into, work work, eight eight to five or,
(32:19):
whatever and they go, back get on the, plane land
home in time for. Dinner your tax dollars at, work
so that's where The National Fingerprint bureau.
Speaker 4 (32:27):
Is i'm thinking that commutes not too bad UNTIL i
realize that they have to commute TO dca as, well
so that probably adds a good.
Speaker 3 (32:36):
Hour, yeah BUT i think what probably is what that
deal is they probably land in a private terminal area
that that, happens and then they're to go off there
and GO i DON'T i don't think they have to
go through the public.
Speaker 1 (32:45):
THING i, mean these daily employees.
Speaker 2 (32:47):
As long as they're avoiding The southwest terminal at.
Speaker 3 (32:49):
D, yeah it's a. Mess i've been. THERE i got
stuck there. Once so, anyway that's that's what that's what's.
Happening BUT i was on a bus headed to that
little bit of airport, there North Central West Virginia Regional airport.
There but in really it's kind of in this little Community,
bridgepoort just just to the east Of, clarksburg And Cameron
(33:13):
parker AND i were watching The Chiefs dolphins game on
his phone on his iPhone where he Had Prime video
his subscription you, know loaded into that watching watching that
playoff game, There so that comes to, mind and That
chiefs dophin because that was the first time ever that
had been On prime, video and it drew a lot of.
(33:34):
Criticism people, SAID i hope. It it was their largest
viewership ever for any program on prime. Video so it's
always going to be like. THAT nfl, playoffs and that's
why THE nfl is more than happy to Let netflix
or A Prime video or. Somebody, yeah you can get
a game for ten million dollars or whatever it, is you, know.
Speaker 4 (33:53):
And the, money look at the money side of it
for fans, though is not great because now you need, five, six,
seven sometimes different things to watch all the. Games, yeah,
yeah especially when THE nba has done now, yep.
Speaker 1 (34:06):
Yep for. Sure.
Speaker 3 (34:07):
Uh The Texans steelers, game, however will be on regular
OLD espn On monday, night is also ON. ABC i
THINK i will tell you this What i'm Doing monday.
Night i'm watching the Final manning cast of the season
because they're gonna do it as.
Speaker 4 (34:24):
Well i'm excited for that, game you, know it's it's
it's one of those games it feels as though it's
coming down to one or two. PLAYS i feel like
that about most of these, games but in particular That
Houston pittsburgh.
Speaker 3 (34:36):
Game, well let's hear a little bit about it From.
Debinko ryan's a head. Coach first of, all talked about
What Danielle hunter has meant to his.
Speaker 11 (34:43):
Defense danill has, man you, know everything to our defensive
success is with. Him you, know we added a guy
to our team as a free, agent you, know two years,
ago who already had success as a pass rusher when
he was In. Minnesota, MINNESOTA i, mean he was always
getting out there the, quarterback you, know double digit sack. Guy
so to add, him you, know with a young guy And,
(35:05):
will we're adding a guy who's not only is, productive
but he's also a selfless guy who is willing to
teach the other young guys of how it's, done how
he's had success in his. Career and so that's the
biggest thing Guy i've seen from him is just his
willingness to, share you, know his kind of his kind
of you, know little the gift that he has and
(35:27):
his little tricks of the trade and how he can you,
know beat beat guys on a consistent, basis and him
sharing the information has helped a lot of our guys
have some.
Speaker 3 (35:36):
SUCCESS i love how coaches describe stuff like, that tricks
of the, trade they're veterans who played in the. Defense
what about the offensive? Line the growth has impressed the head.
Speaker 11 (35:47):
Coach the offensive line has done a good, Job like
our group has improved throughout the. Year the main thing
when you look at, it we've done a really great
job of protecting our quarterback and that's The that was
the main emphasis coming in to this.
Speaker 1 (36:00):
Year can we upgrade.
Speaker 11 (36:02):
In that area of protecting our quarterback better keeping him
off the, Ground and we've done.
Speaker 3 (36:07):
That and then finally he was asked for his thoughts
on The steelers and in specific the ground attack and
How pittsburgh was able to win some games by having
a healthy ground attack and what that means To pittsburgh
and the challenge of posts for his.
Speaker 1 (36:24):
Defense when you first.
Speaker 11 (36:26):
Pop on the film watching The, steelers a thing that
jumps out the, most you know is their running back.
Position they have two guys you, Know warren and you
know WHO'S i mean you watch him running. Football it's
really impressive to see a young guy run the ball
the way he runs the. Ball he's he's small, guy
but he's, tough he's, physical runs it really well and game.
(36:48):
Well another receiver that steps saying And he's done a
really great job as well running the. Football but the
thing where they make a lot of plays, is you,
know both, backs which every guy's, in you know what
they do with the ball in their hand once the
ball is. Out aaron's done a great job of not
making bad. Plays he gets the ball to his check
down very. Quickly and those, guys you, know make some
(37:09):
productive plays off of catching the ball behind the line of.
Scrimmage they make a tont make a lot of guys miss.
Tackles they both have really good contact. Balance they have the,
speed the, toughness the physicality to really gain yards after the,
catch and they're topping the league at receiving yards after the.
Catch so it'll be a tough challenge to get these
guys on the. Ground that's gonna take everybody from our
(37:31):
d line coming out of the, stack our second level
guys really securing the tackles as best we.
Speaker 3 (37:37):
Can we'll hear some more From Debiko ryan's coming up
a little later on in the, Program but up next
we're gonna shift gears and talk some baseball off season
baseball free agent signings and pursuits and the. Like will
visit with OUR mlb Insider Gene. Watson that's up next
when we continue here on A friday afternoon On Sports
RADIO am thirteen under The, zone where you always listen
(37:59):
to us for free on The iHeartRadio.
Speaker 8 (38:00):
App It's the Craig Way show with the voice of
The texas Mog horns And hall Of fame Broadcasting Craig.
Speaker 1 (38:17):
Way and if.
Speaker 3 (38:21):
It's Early, january it means it's time to talk, baseball,
right that's the way it, Goes, hey in the off,
season getting.
Speaker 1 (38:29):
Ready we're just about a month.
Speaker 3 (38:30):
Away from pitchers and catchers and teams reporting, there and
so to update, this we want to get an update
on a couple of. Things we always check in with
our good friend AND mlb Insider Gene, watson who joins
us now from The Chicago White sox front. Office you,
know the Happy New year to you and glad to
have you with us this. Morning and just to put
(38:53):
anything aside for anybody, goes, well there's not anything happening right,
now right because, teams you, know aren't reporting yet for spring.
Training it's all, quiet. Right that's not exactly the, case is.
Speaker 12 (39:03):
It it's really.
Speaker 13 (39:06):
Not you, KNOW i felt like coming out of the,
holidays And Happy New year to, everybody and thanks for having.
Me it's been a little bit more active this winter
than most first weeks Of, january AND i think the
international market has had a lot to do with, that
players coming over From. Japan the free agent class is
a little bit unique this. Year everybody's waiting On Alex
(39:28):
bragman And Cody bellinger and to see where they're going to.
Land and until those things, happen you, know teams are
kind of just assessing, things and everybody in baseball is
looking for.
Speaker 12 (39:37):
Pitching right, now so it's it's been a little crazier
than most first weeks Of.
Speaker 3 (39:41):
January, well you brought up, Pitching let's let me let
me get you to start with. That any surprise in
the fact That Terrek, scuball who's if not the, best
he's as bad as good as anybody in the game
in terms of starting, pitching that this thing is going
to go to arbitration because they Are i've never heard
this number, before over thirteen million dollars apart in how
(40:06):
each side is viewing how a contract would.
Speaker 1 (40:08):
Work it really.
Speaker 13 (40:11):
Is BUT i think when you look at his platform,
NUMBERS i think that he's got a very good case
to ask for the money he's asking. For and then
when you look at some of the contracts that clubs
have given out two pitchers that are way less talented Than,
SCHOOBLE i think that that his camp has a very good.
(40:32):
Case i'm The, Tigers i'm sure did their due diligence
in the numbers and the platform or where they thought
he should. Be, so you, know there was a lot
of teams that were pretty surprised.
Speaker 12 (40:44):
That they didn't move.
Speaker 13 (40:45):
Him but when you look at the division and how you,
know they're kind of the class of the division right.
Now how do you say to the media and your
fan base that you're going to move this, guy even
if it is for mass impact. MULTIPLICATION i think THAT
i don't know that you're ever going to a better
arm Than trek Scoob well Maybe Garrett, crochet but they're
(41:05):
in win mode right, now so it's a unique situation
and that they're going to be a very good team next.
Speaker 1 (41:11):
Year, yeah, YEAH i find.
Speaker 3 (41:13):
It it must be really, difficult and you know this
working in the front. Office it must be a difficult
thing for front office people who are looking at the
payroll and all this sort of stuff to, say he's
as good as there is out, there but can we
actually get to that particular? Number AND i guess that's
where arbitration kind of comes in. There but it makes
(41:35):
for some really tough decisions and some tough calls for
front office people when it comes to that kind of.
Speaker 1 (41:40):
Money did?
Speaker 13 (41:40):
It it really, does because you don't know what to
do with the rest of your off season, budgetarily especially
going into a year where THE cba is going to,
expire you don't really know what to do, Budgetarily and you,
know the days of it being personal between the club
and the, players those days are kind of. Gone players
understand that it's a. Business they know that the front
(42:03):
offices care about. Them they you, know they nurture these
players all the way up through the minor leagues and
they have great relationships and great. Conversations this is just
the tricky business side of the.
Speaker 12 (42:14):
Game BUT i don't think it gets.
Speaker 13 (42:16):
PERSONAL i think both sides, understand you, know the feeling
behind the.
Speaker 3 (42:20):
Numbers last month when we visited during winter, MEETINGS i
was talking about and asking you about the, abundance AND
i just rattled off a whole bunch of free, agents
but largely, pitchers and that's where we were going with.
This AND i want to get your thoughts on some
guys who are still out there who teams obviously are
(42:42):
taking a close look at and the pluses and minuses or.
Whatever let me start With Chris, bassett because here's a
guy who proved what he can do obviously In. Toronto
he is going to be thirty seven this. Year he's you,
know doesn't blow up the radar gun like he's done,
before but he's been really, good very, consistent and he's
been pretty durable as.
Speaker 1 (43:02):
Well about your thoughts On, Bassett, yeah you.
Speaker 12 (43:06):
Know it's really it's really two. Categories you've.
Speaker 13 (43:09):
Got you've got the ages that are gonna pitch games, one,
two and three of a five game playoff, series and
then you've got the depth and volume. Guys and And
bassett would certainly qualify as one of those depth volume.
Guys and the last thing you want to do as
a club is dole out a big contract and be
(43:29):
left with be holding the bag on a big contract
on a on an old player that's not going to
perform up to their their usual. Performance SO i think
teams always measure these types of guys versus what they
have in their system and what they may believe they
can get out of the less experienced, players versus doling
(43:51):
out a big contract for players like. That but he's
certainly a rotation. Solidifier, Uh he's gonna end up, somewhere
and you know where he is in his, Career.
Speaker 12 (44:00):
He's gonna want to pitch for a.
Speaker 13 (44:01):
Winner he's gonna want to go to a team where
he knows he's got a chance to. Win and so
that's certainly probably slowing the process.
Speaker 3 (44:07):
Down, Okay and given the fact ALSO i know it
might even be talking apples to, oranges but we are
talking about the same team here With toronto when they
Sign KAZUMA. A kamoto to a four, year sixty million dollar,
deal he's a third. Baseman but that all goes into
balancing what your payroll is going.
Speaker 1 (44:25):
To be all, about doesn't.
Speaker 12 (44:26):
It that's exactly.
Speaker 13 (44:28):
Right and then you you know what really plays into
it is you know how much of the guy was
impactful in the clubhouse and the twenty six, man, like
what kind of difference maker was?
Speaker 1 (44:39):
He was he?
Speaker 12 (44:39):
Neutral was he? Negative was he a?
Speaker 13 (44:41):
Positive but whenever you're building your roster from the top,
down and they dole out a contract like that for
the third. Basement it certainly impacts that the decisions you
can make beyond.
Speaker 3 (44:51):
That as as long as we're talking about AS i
mentioned A, KAMODA i WANT i want to get your.
Thoughts first of, all congratulation to your organization for for
signing the Net kamurakami a third baseman. There, uh the
The astros signed Pitcher Tatsua amai as. Well and how
much does not just show A, otani but the Other
(45:15):
japanese imports And korean, imports the The asian, influx The
pacific rim influx in The Major League baseball over the
last two or three. Years how much has that affected
the very active off season in looking to the Far
east to add to rosters that we've already seen to this.
Speaker 13 (45:35):
Point, well number, one this is The otani. Effect and
what you know when you're sitting over there and you're
playing in the leagues In korea And japan and you're
watching games over, here and you see the impact That
otani has had not only on his his, life his family's,
life his, career but that pride that The japanese letters
(45:58):
takes in coming over The major leagues and impacting the major.
Leagues this is really the first class of players of
really like. ENVIOUS i want to go over and be
a part of. It not that they're the players that
Know tony that honey, is but but they want to
do the same. Thing they want to take the same
pride to show the world That japanese cut players can
(46:19):
play at the highest. Level and we're certainly excited about
americamun and what he's going to do for our lineup
and and what it's already done in the city from
a buzz from a fan base and media, standpoint And amaya.
Speaker 12 (46:32):
In, HOUSTON i, mean what.
Speaker 13 (46:34):
A great sign and a perfect fit to tap into
an entirely different fan. Base he's one of the most
talented pitchers to come out Of japan in a very long.
Speaker 12 (46:44):
Time and and and in a vehicle to.
Speaker 13 (46:47):
Try to acquire talent from a different vehicle, pool a
perfect sign for The Houston.
Speaker 3 (46:52):
Astros talking off season baseball With Gen, watson OUR mlb,
Insider i'm taking down a little bit slightly different path,
here and that is the aisle if you're shopping for
Future hall of. Famers Justin verlander And Max schurzer. Now
verlander turns forty three next. Month churser turns forty two In.
(47:13):
July verlander signed with The giants a one year deal
last year fifteen, Million schureser fifteen and a half. Million
chures are showed he still has some stuff left in
with what he. DID i mean when we last saw
him there he was In game. Seven he allowed just
one run in four and a. Third obviously wound up
getting no decision on the. Deal how about your thoughts on,
It is there significant interest to pay that kind of
(47:37):
money or in the neighborhood of that for guys Like
verlander And.
Speaker 1 (47:40):
Schurser right, NOW.
Speaker 13 (47:43):
I think it's gonna be slow played only because these
guys are not going to teams that don't have a
chance to. Win so now you're talking about fit and
how many teams that are first division clubs that think
they're going to win next year need a. Starter so
that that's number. One number two is you got to
look out and, say, okay let's look at teams Like.
(48:04):
Seattle let's look at teams Like. Miami and you already
Saw Edward cabrera get traded by The, marlins and let's
see what the acquisition costs maybe in more, controllable, younger
higher upside over the long term than what these guys
might cost some free. Agents so it's a real balancing.
Act but the biggest thing about it is do we
(48:27):
have the. FIT i, mean The dodgers are loaded and
starting pitching not really a. Fit so as you begin
to go around the first division, clubs you got to
find that. Fit and then you got to find out
if they're not venturing into the trade market to try
to get, younger, cheaper more controllable impact. Alarms, okay so
it'll take a little.
Speaker 12 (48:45):
Time it'll be a little, later but it'll take some.
Speaker 3 (48:47):
Time let me ask you about a couple other guys
who are out there that are pitchers and who would
be available out. There and among those guys a guy
you know pretty, Well Lucas, giolito and of course he
was banged up down the stretch of the season and
couldn't perform in the. Postseason And Nick. Martinez there's a
(49:07):
couple of guys right.
Speaker 1 (49:08):
There.
Speaker 12 (49:10):
Fierce, competitors with great.
Speaker 13 (49:12):
Stuff they take immense amount of pride in their bodies
of you, Know lucas with the injuries and was really,
unfortunate but these are the types of guys that you
monitor throughout the. Season you, Know i've got scouts in
facilities all over the country today looking at free agent
pitching and just making, sure you, know the health is,
(49:32):
good how's the ball coming out of the, hand where
are they at mentally in their, career and you just
try to find out to make sure they're.
Speaker 12 (49:40):
Fit but these two, guys for certainly two of the more.
Speaker 13 (49:42):
Talented guys that have a chance to come back in
twenty twenty six and really swing the needle for your
club because they have a chance to be better in
twenty six than they were in twenty.
Speaker 3 (49:52):
Five i'm always impressed by guys who can produce in
the front half of a, season be traded and then
really be a, weapon or even guys who are okay
in the first half and then they get dealt at
the trade deadline and they really crank it up in high.
Gear Harrison bader comes to mind with what he did
(50:12):
with The, phillies and.
Speaker 1 (50:13):
He's a guy out. There and then a.
Speaker 3 (50:15):
Guy Like Luis, ries who WHEN i watch him, HIT
i think he's as pure a hitter as you will,
see not only in The National, league but probably in
all of, baseball and both of those guys are out
there right.
Speaker 13 (50:27):
Now, Yeah and you know what's interesting is you never
know how a player is going to respond to a.
Trade they're either going to be super excited about the
opportunity to go in and impact a, team or they're
going to say to, themselves what DID i do wrong
that the other team didn't want? Me and it's a
real psychology to, it and we lived it last year
(50:50):
and With Miguel vargas who came from The, dodgers best
team in, baseball surrounded by the best, players to one
of the worst teams in, baseball not a lot of,
protection and there's a psychology of. That but it speaks
to the players makeup and their their mental, state the
grind that they. Have Luisa, RISE i, mean if pre,
analytics The Luisa Luisa rise is Like Tony, Lynn it's
(51:12):
Like Rod, Carew it's like but because there's not a
lot of exit velocity in his in his contact rates
and and those, things people not there's not a lot of. Versatility,
defensively people try to tear down the, player but, truly
he's gonna give you one of the best hat bats
in the game Of baseball And Harrison vader premium position,
player elite DEFENDER i call killer. Makeup you, know he's
(51:36):
a guy that can impact the team in a lot
of ways and and they're both gonna end up in
really good situations.
Speaker 3 (51:41):
Soon two other guys interested to get your thoughts on,
This two other guys long in the two, veterans guys
who produced hero out their, careers one of whom finished
fourth in the N l M vv poting a year.
Speaker 1 (51:54):
Ago That's.
Speaker 3 (51:55):
Marcelosuna and then the other Is Paul, goldschmith who we
know very well obviously the former Great Texas state bobcat
who who's been outstanding as. Well those two, guys even
though the production numbers went down in twenty twenty, five
is there a market for him one hundred?
Speaker 13 (52:12):
Percent with Those, zuna you're you, know you're looking at
taking him out of a lineup where he had a
lot of, impact and you're probably looking at him being
more of a protection bat in the sixth, hole maybe
a lot more dh at bats than at bat you,
know put innings in the.
Speaker 12 (52:29):
Field but this is a guy that.
Speaker 13 (52:31):
You can add and really LinkedIn out your, lineup and
you know he's going to be impactful and you put
any kind of protection around, him and he's got a.
Speaker 1 (52:38):
Chance to do a lot of.
Speaker 13 (52:39):
Damages And Paul GOLDSMITH i WOULD i would term the position.
Speaker 12 (52:42):
Player of shr Zurn.
Speaker 13 (52:44):
Erlander he's not gonna want to play for a team
that doesn't have a chance to win a world. Championship
these guys are on the backsides of their. Career they
don't want to go into rebuilds or build. Situations they
want to go and. Win so, again With, paul it's
gonna come down to fit for, him and this could
be a little bit later because teams may take an
injury in spring training that creates a situation where he
(53:07):
has a little more more value to.
Speaker 3 (53:08):
THEM i want to get your thoughts You you kind
of made a reference to it, earlier BUT i am
kind of curious if there is updates or what the
situation is with guys Like Cody, Bellinger Kyle, Tucker Fromer,
Valdez Alex bregman, obviously, uh those guys and your thoughts
on you know what the process is like right, now
(53:32):
not only for those guys and the, representatives but for
the teams as they flesh out what they can afford
what they need and what they have to surrender to
get a guy like.
Speaker 12 (53:40):
That, WELL i was wrong About Kyle.
Speaker 13 (53:44):
SCHWARBER i Thought Kyle sharber was going to be with
a surprise team and he ended up being back with The,
phillies which speaks to how.
Speaker 12 (53:50):
Much he means to.
Speaker 13 (53:51):
Them with these, GUYS i think they're all kind of
in the same. Market you, know it's The Red, sox
it's The, Cubs it's teams that are trying to win
a world. Championship and these are the kinds of deals
that get really meticulous at the. End it's, more you,
know the incentives and the bonuses a part of the.
Contract it's the little things that separate one team from
(54:11):
the other.
Speaker 12 (54:12):
That are big deals for the.
Speaker 13 (54:13):
Players these players have worked their entire careers to get
to dis point in their career where they could have
some leverage and some saying where they. Go and it's
not only about their contract and what they can bring
out of, it but they want to hear a. Vision
they want to hear a plan as To, OKAY i
sign with you, Guys, well what's the plan for twenty?
Seven what's the plan for twenty? Eight talk to me
(54:35):
about our minor league. System so there's a lot of
detail that goes into these contracts for these types of,
players and the agents do such a great job of
making sure that everything is aligned that they don't want
to be in a situation where we sign this, deal
we get into it two years down the road and
my players not protected and they're in a really bad.
Speaker 12 (54:56):
Situation so that's really what.
Speaker 13 (54:58):
It, is is more detail and organization for the individual,
player plan the incentives of the, contract but then sell
me the vision on what this team's going to look
like three and four years down the.
Speaker 3 (55:08):
ROAD i want to ask you one other, thing and
this isn't about players and not necessarily about front, offices
but it's really, intriguing AND i know that you've at least.
Speaker 1 (55:20):
Kept tabs on.
Speaker 3 (55:21):
It yesterday it was announced that nine More major league
teams have ended their deals with The Main Street Sports. Group,
now this was the group that was The Diamond Sports group,
that's of course the subsidiary Of Sinclair.
Speaker 1 (55:37):
Broadcasting this is the.
Speaker 3 (55:38):
Group that managed all of these regional networks that had
to undergo, bankruptcy and as a, result several teams went
their own, way including The rangers along with The, diamondbacks The,
padres The, guardians The, rockies The, twins The, mariners The
nationals are expected to be part of that this. Year
and now The, Braves, Reds, Tigers, Royals, Angels, Marlins, Brewers,
(56:00):
cardinals And rays are all terminating their original deals With Main.
Street the extrapolated thought on all of this geno is
the fact that you may See Rob manford talking about
trying to get everybody under one window down the. Road,
now obviously that's not gonna sit well with teams like The,
yankees The, dodgers even your ball, club The White sox And,
(56:22):
cubs who have really good lucrative television. Contracts but the larger,
picture a lot of folks say this is going to
affect more the divide between the haves and the have
nots of if these teams are all going under THE
mlb arm where they're not getting near as much money
even as they were getting in their regional sports network
(56:45):
deals before the bankruptcy.
Speaker 1 (56:47):
Happened how about your thoughts on, That.
Speaker 13 (56:50):
Well it's unfortunate because it really it straps, you like
with what you want to do right now with your,
team because you've lost all that revenue And i've talked
to a couple of teams that that are subject to.
That the money they thought they were going to have
in free agency they no.
Speaker 12 (57:06):
Longer have because of.
Speaker 13 (57:07):
THIS i do feel like we're getting to a point
in the media age where it does kind of be
it kind of needs to be, universal EVEN i, know you,
KNOW i think The DODGERS tv deals like nine. BILLION
i know EVERYBODY'S tv deals are. Different some are more
lucrative than. Others The yankees obviously have one of the bigger.
Ones but we have to create some type of balance
(57:30):
when it comes to revenue sharing with media.
Speaker 5 (57:33):
Rights and you, know our game.
Speaker 13 (57:35):
Has really suffered on a national level in some ways with.
Speaker 12 (57:39):
This and SO.
Speaker 13 (57:42):
I know that every team is different based on their
market and what the situation, is but it can't be
where some teams can operate and some teams can't based
on their their local media. Rights there's got to be
some give and take with, that AND i think That
Rob manford has that on his play right.
Speaker 1 (57:57):
NOW i.
Speaker 3 (57:58):
Agree all, Right, Hey, GENO i appreciate that. Time best
wishes to you And. Melodie you hope things go well
and we'll check back in with you when we get
ready for the start of spring. Training, hey we're a
month away from you getting out To arizona.
Speaker 12 (58:09):
Right month, away and we got THE.
Speaker 13 (58:11):
Wbc i'll actually be In houston for ten days doing
that and it's going to be a fun twenty twenty.
Speaker 12 (58:17):
Six can't wait to see.
Speaker 1 (58:18):
It thank, You, gino appreciate.
Speaker 3 (58:19):
It. Okay that Is Gene watson from The Chicago White
sox front. Office great off season baseball conversation With. Gina
we have more coming up here In Sports RADIO am
thirteen under The zone in the iHeart you.
Speaker 12 (58:30):
Got a little, Dish you've got a little.
Speaker 3 (58:32):
Spoon, Right just kind of curious the motivation behind this particular.
Speaker 2 (58:37):
Rejoiner you, know earlier this hour you were describing a
little bit of, airport AND i thought that'd be a
pretty good song to.
Speaker 1 (58:44):
Here, yeah it is a little bit of. Airport i've been.
Speaker 2 (58:47):
In a little bit of airport a couple of.
Speaker 3 (58:50):
Them, Yeah i'm going into one today later this.
Speaker 2 (58:54):
Afternoon is it bigger than a one? GATE i don't.
Speaker 1 (59:00):
Know i've never flown commercial in The. Tuscaloosa have you.
Speaker 2 (59:03):
Ever flown Into, Rhyinelander?
Speaker 3 (59:04):
Wisconsin, no but THAT i know Where ryanlander is a
former boss of mine was From Ryan.
Speaker 1 (59:10):
Landers that's way up.
Speaker 2 (59:11):
North at a birthplace Of JOHN. W. Heisman, yeah who has.
Speaker 4 (59:17):
A bust at the, airport really a museum and a
plaque of all The heisman. Winners it's also one of
those airports that one, NIGHT i was the last one
there and the gate agent SLASH tsa agent said, well
it's an automatic. Door it'll close behind you on your way. Out,
okay SO i don't need to stay for.
Speaker 3 (59:39):
YOU i think Still water may only have one, gate
certainly no more than, two but they may only have.
Speaker 1 (59:47):
One Still water just fly To Oka.
Speaker 3 (59:49):
See, No, no they have regional jets FROM. Dfw they
go up. There they had, it they got rid of
it round then they brought it. Back so you can
fly a regional jet into Still water to do, that
because it's only seventy miles From stillwater to o K.
Speaker 1 (01:00:02):
See so they don't fly. There BUT.
Speaker 3 (01:00:06):
I think it all just goes back and. Forth did
like two or three flights a day out of. That
Oklahom state might be a busy place this coming fall football,
season with new head Coach Eric mars coming up In
North texas and bringing his quarterback with. Him Drew mestemaker
The vandergrit product we'll see with regard to college. FOOTBALL
(01:00:30):
i mentioned this last, hour but it's certainly worth mentioning
the fact That miami's going to get to playing on
its own home. Field, Now it's happened before in the,
past for, EXAMPLE ucla getting a chance to play for
a national title playing in The Rose, bowl although they're
moving out of The Rose, bowl but they've been able
(01:00:50):
to do that in the. Past it was mentioned last,
night it's the first, time really in modern, times if you,
will in the twenty first, century that a team has
even played in its home state for a national CHAMPIONSHIP
lsu winning In New, orleans which is seventy miles from
the campus In Baton, Rouge so there's. That but this
will be the first time a team in the playoff
(01:01:12):
era has played on its home. Field and again it's happened,
Before miami winning The Orange bowl Overar oklahoma When Michael
irvin was playing for. Them these, days of, Course Michael,
irvin crazy, man wild man up and down the. Sideline
apparently he was in tears after the game last, night
was so excited About miami. Winning So i'm happy for.
(01:01:33):
HIM i think the whole belt to ass thing is
kind of its. COURSE i didn't did he do? IT
i didn't see. It did he do it again last?
Speaker 2 (01:01:39):
TIME i didn't see. THAT i don't know that he
did it. Again but, yeah because.
Speaker 1 (01:01:42):
They scored with eighteen seconds left in the.
Speaker 4 (01:01:43):
Game exactly These it's now entered the lexicon for everything.
Speaker 2 (01:01:49):
Ata. Yeah, oh, well you Know texas shouldn't have gotten
btad By, floridah, yeah, whatever you, KNOW i seem to
remember that game coming down to the last.
Speaker 1 (01:01:58):
Second it was last Last Bozsi texas had they lost by.
Speaker 3 (01:02:01):
Eight they lost twenty nine to twenty. One but you,
know it was such a bad first. HALF i remember.
That that probably is what resonates in the. Fans you,
know didn't you say you had somebody that talked about
how the one of your, friends about how THE sec
sucked or something like. That it was, like because they
gave up a, touchdown they're represented with eighteen seconds to
go in the, game.
Speaker 1 (01:02:20):
Right look in the semi.
Speaker 2 (01:02:21):
FINAL i spent a lot of, time, OBVIOUSLY i grew
up on The East.
Speaker 4 (01:02:24):
COAST i spent a lot of time living and working
in The, midwest And i've got a lot Of big ten,
friends and they are doing a little bit too much
victory lapping for my.
Speaker 2 (01:02:33):
Liking These these are close football.
Speaker 1 (01:02:34):
Games these are good.
Speaker 4 (01:02:35):
Games and if you call every team that ever loses a,
fraud and their whole conference and all the teams they
beat by extension, frauds you're left with one real team
at the end of the.
Speaker 2 (01:02:46):
Year no one watches college football and thinks that yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:02:49):
Right and and by the, way this may be unpopular
with a lot of long worn, fans but it's a.
BROADCASTER i will tell You texas hanging in was not a.
Fraud this year to end in disappointing, Fashion, yeah look
at the team that beat them all, Right first of,
All texas beat, them and the Long words are getting.
Better and then losing to a team that's going to
play for the national.
Speaker 1 (01:03:09):
Championship, now, NOW i think What aggie.
Speaker 3 (01:03:11):
Fans or those who are against The aggies get caught
up in is back to back. Loss is one of
those being to your rival To texas when you were,
undefeated so that's calls for massive. Disappointment and then losing
a playoff team on your home. Field now they only
lost ten, three but losing a play those. Are that's
what those who are down on the aggies are weaponizing against.
(01:03:34):
Them that's what they're. Saying that you got beat by
your archs rival when you were. Undefeated, yeah it was
a road, game but you should have you were leading in,
half you should have won the, game all of which
may be, true but that doesn't make them frauds or.
Speaker 1 (01:03:46):
FRAUDS i think that's a little.
Speaker 4 (01:03:48):
Severe so you also have folks that say we need
to stop putting so MANY sec teams in the playoff
because their playoff record over the last three seasons is
not all that. Impressive but these are close games when
the exception obviously Of alabama In, indiana.
Speaker 3 (01:04:01):
Right and they've been able to get teams to the semifinal.
Speaker 1 (01:04:05):
Round so that's that's where that. Is all. Right we'll
be back to wrap Up hour number. Two i'm thirteen hunder.
Speaker 3 (01:04:10):
The, Zone thurn and final hour of the program here
on Sports MEDIO am thirteen hundred of The zone here
on This friday. Afternoon glad to have you with, Us
Greg way joined by the Producer Jay. Kerrman coming up
in a few, Minutes Seidar golden of The Austin American
statesmen will join us get his thoughts on last night's
college football playoff semifinal and off season stuff for The.
(01:04:31):
Longhorns THE Nfl weekend to, come said is a he's
A renaissance, fan so we'll visit with him coming.
Speaker 1 (01:04:38):
UP i did want to get to a couple of
pro football.
Speaker 3 (01:04:45):
Notes so The Baltimore ravens decide that they've come to
the end.
Speaker 1 (01:04:52):
Of the line With John, harball so he gets. Fired
Todd mounkin.
Speaker 3 (01:05:01):
Was the offensive, cordnerator he, says blame me for Why
Lamar jackson and The ravens regressed. Offensively he, SAID i
didn't Coach lamar well. ENOUGH i didn't have as good
a relationship AS i could. HAVE i didn't do the
things we needed to do this year to win enough
games to give ourselves a.
Speaker 1 (01:05:19):
CHANCE i believe that.
Speaker 3 (01:05:22):
He isn't expected to be the play caller next season
once The ravens land a new head. Coach the trickle
down From John harball being let go to what happens
in other places Like New york And atlanta And miami
has become fascinating because of the tentacles that come out
(01:05:45):
From John. Harball those who are interested in him and
you know the places where he might be.
Speaker 4 (01:05:52):
Interested so And miami makes a decision right just less
than twenty four hours later to get rid Of mike.
McDaniel now some folks are, reporting Like Ian, rappaport that
that decision was coming, anyway but just a few days,
Earlier mike McDaniel is participating in the interviews to become
the g to find the NEW gm because you, know
(01:06:14):
you want those two pieces to be on the same.
Page so that had people Thinking mike McDaniel would.
Speaker 2 (01:06:19):
Stay so you went from.
Speaker 4 (01:06:21):
A very very unproven list of candidates for a big
list of vacancies in THE nfl head coaching world to
within the last forty eight, Hours John, Harball mike, McDaniel
And Cliff kingsbury From washington are making it a little
bit of an easier time for teams to find head.
Speaker 2 (01:06:42):
Coaches in my, OPINION.
Speaker 3 (01:06:44):
I agree with. YOU i definitely agree with you on.
That so it's going to be interesting to see how that. As,
meanwhile if you were guessing right, now Where's John harball
going to, Land because he's going to land somebody somewhere
there are teams interested in his, services where would you
say that he would wind.
Speaker 4 (01:07:03):
Up i'll go with The giants because you have some
PIECES i think to build around With Jackson, dard who
at least flashed the ability to be a difference maker at. Quarterback,
Right you've got a young defense and a somewhat friendly
salary cap, situation all of WHICH i think are appealing
For John.
Speaker 3 (01:07:22):
Harbaugh, okay all, right so you're going to go with The.
Giants i'm gonna say it's going to be The Atlanta.
Falcons that's a good guess as. Well and part of
that is because The falcons are going to Interview Matt,
ryan who's been working ON, cbs their former franchise, quarterback among,
others for a new.
Speaker 1 (01:07:41):
ROLE i love the title of this.
Speaker 3 (01:07:43):
Role it's, called according to Owner Arthur, blank president Of.
Football that's the title president of. Football this president of
football position will be hired, first And blank does have
interviews with several candidates in the next few. Days so
(01:08:04):
whoever gets hired as president football is going to lead
the interviews for the head coach and the general. Manager
see that's the other. THING i Think John harbaugh wants
to go somewhere where he knows who THE gm. Is
that there's some control of it, there AND i think
he probably feels he could probably work With Matt ryan
If ryan winds up being the.
Speaker 4 (01:08:21):
Guy if that's the way he, thinks you're absolutely, correct
BECAUSE i don't think a lot of head coach candidates
think too highly Of Joe shane with The.
Speaker 3 (01:08:30):
Giants, exactly and with The falcons got pretty good running,
back pretty good running back back there In. ATLANTA i
Think Bjon robinson is one of the top players in THE.
Nfl you, know THE nfl players both the top one
hundred every, year and he usually don't pay a lot
of attention to.
Speaker 1 (01:08:45):
That If Bjon robinson is.
Speaker 3 (01:08:47):
Not in the top five players in THE, nfl that's
a mistake and it's not worth paying attention to. That
he has to BE i think one of the top
five players in The National Football league because of his,
versatility is exploit, civity great, teammate all of those. THINGS i,
Think And i'm not just. Saying this is the guy
you know who called it every one of his games
(01:09:08):
when he was playing for The. Longhorns the guy has
shown what he can do at the next. Level never
mind what he did in college At, Texas he's shown
what he can do with The.
Speaker 4 (01:09:16):
Falcons if he stays healthy and has the longevity that
you AND i think he will in HIS nfl, career
he could be one of the all time.
Speaker 3 (01:09:24):
GREATS i totally agree with. That All, right we'll have
MORE nfl notes coming. Up but up next we visit
With Cedric golden of The Austin American. Statesment when we
continue right here On Sports RADIO am thirteen under the
zone in The, iHeartRadio.
Speaker 12 (01:09:35):
Ama i'll be there in a n To.
Speaker 1 (01:09:43):
OKAY i don't know about the rest of.
Speaker 3 (01:09:45):
You there are certain songs you hear that that take
you to a certain place and you can't think of anything,
else at least in the immediacy of the, moment but
that one particular. Place and for, me WHEN i hear
ain't no mountain high, ENOUGH i THINK i remember The.
Speaker 1 (01:10:03):
TITANS i just.
Speaker 3 (01:10:05):
DO i don't, know But i'm glad to have you with,
us and very pleased to be joined by good, friend
a longtime colleague in the. Business we go back to
the days WHEN i was working In dallas and he
was working for The Titler Morning telegraph covering high school.
Football of, course he's been sports writer and a columnist
and now the newly Minted Texas Sports writer of The
(01:10:29):
year for twenty twenty, five recognized by The National Sports Media.
Association so he'll be awarded that coming up at the
end Of june in their annual awards dinner in my
hometown Of, Greensboro North. Carolina so it's great to Have
Cedric golden with. US i appreciate.
Speaker 1 (01:10:44):
It set. Congratulations how are, you, Man i'm.
Speaker 5 (01:10:47):
Great when they called me about the, AWARD i WAS
i thought the guy had Lost Kirk bose's phone number
And i'm just calling to get it for me SINCE
i talked To kirk all the. Time but, man, yeah
that was very. Humbling just to be meant you with
such some some really great journalist.
Speaker 1 (01:11:03):
Was kind of.
Speaker 5 (01:11:03):
Cool that's cooler to me than winning it just being.
Mentioned so, yeah very. Blessed it was cool.
Speaker 3 (01:11:09):
Though, yeah AND i don't know about, you but the
two times That i've wanted it means something special because
it's a peer. Vote it's coming from the way THE nsma.
Works National Sports Media. Association they have these individual awards
for all fifty states and The district Of. Columbia they have,
(01:11:31):
that and then they have A National Sports cast the
year in The National Sports writer of The. Year each
state has a sports cast of The year and A
Sports writer of The, year and you are only allowed
to vote for and this is completely fair sportscasters and
sports writers in your. State so only people in the
state Of texas can vote on. It so it's obviously
(01:11:51):
people who have known and read your work said that
that did the voting.
Speaker 5 (01:11:55):
Here and that really warms my heart creak because when
you take when you take about all the great writers
in this, state there are just too many to name
on on this, call but uh just is really really
gratifying to know that they that they appreciate my work
(01:12:15):
BECAUSE i respect the job itself of sports writers and
sportscasters like. Yourself you, know before we started this, CALL
i was telling you you and you And Kirk bose
are too artists working sports Journalists i've ever been. Around
and the example that you guys have have laid forth
for us younger bucks in the business has made has
(01:12:37):
made it really. Fun and you, KNOW i was talking
to my, WIFE i, go don't don't let it get
lost at while we were at The orlando airport That
Miss Beverly golden And Miss Linda way were just so
happily playing in their phones while we talked about stuff
that they don't care. About that's.
Speaker 3 (01:12:57):
True and and and that was the last time we
saw each other in The orlando airport before leaving on
what was supposed to be a seven am, flight and
we get delayed over an hour because the, pilot by
his own, dmission got fooled thinking he had an oil,
leak when in fact there was just a little bit
of oil on the bottom part of the calling of
engine number. Two that cost me my connecting flight To,
(01:13:20):
columbia and Got american to reroute me To Saint, louis
got a rental, car drove like a bat out of
hell DOWN.
Speaker 1 (01:13:27):
I seven he get to get To. Columbia you've made
that dry.
Speaker 3 (01:13:29):
Before Saint louis To columbia and got there forty minutes before,
airtime AND i did a quick interview With Vick schaefer
and slapped the equipment Together boon six. Fifteen we were
on the air and off and. Running but that's that's
kind of the life all of us, lead at least at, times, Right.
Speaker 5 (01:13:44):
That's what we do because this, band we love what
we do and never got into this for, money and you,
know we like paying our, bills but we just loved
this business and. Love we love what we get to.
Do we love, Storytelling we love letting people inside a
peek behind the curtain of these, programs especially The university
(01:14:04):
Of texas that we. Cover and when you get, stopped
AND i know you get stopped more than, Most, craig
they always, Say, MAN i appreciate what you. Do, yeah
that's more than any, paycheck, man because the, gratification appreciation
from the people we serve is why we do.
Speaker 1 (01:14:20):
It, well no doubt about.
Speaker 3 (01:14:22):
It and, SAID i think one of the things that's
impressive about your work is that you like a great many. Things,
now you AND i both have known some grizzled old
veterans sports writers and sports, broadcasters and they were in
for one sport maybe, two football or, basketball or football in.
Baseball But i've known you long enough to know you
love college, Football you love THE, Nfl you love college,
(01:14:45):
baseball covered it extensively as we all were blessed to
be Around Augie garito during those. Years you love, Boxing
you follow the sport of kings really. Well and there's
so many things in high school football which we've we're
both kind of cutting our teeth on in the early,
days those kinds of, things and those things still draw
(01:15:06):
you into.
Speaker 1 (01:15:07):
It done.
Speaker 3 (01:15:07):
It it's not just that the heavy duty covering the
nine hundred pound gorilla on campus here in.
Speaker 5 (01:15:12):
Town oh, Man i'm still in mourning that The State
Basketball tournament is no longer In. Austin still in mourning about.
That that's my favorite, event. Perly it was awesome all.
Speaker 1 (01:15:22):
Time.
Speaker 5 (01:15:22):
Man i've Covered Super, Bowls Final, Fours College World, Series
Floyd mayweather. Fights The State Basketball tournament was the best
event going because you got to SEE nba players before
they made it to THE.
Speaker 1 (01:15:37):
Nba Chris, Bosh Kendrick, PERKINS Tj.
Speaker 5 (01:15:39):
Ford Daniel, Ewing, shack all of those guys came through
here and we got to watch them in our. City
how cool was? That So i've been to The San
antonio one twice and they do a good job in
The Alamo, dome but it's not the.
Speaker 1 (01:15:58):
Same it's not the same.
Speaker 5 (01:16:00):
Saying and now that they lopped off a week of South, by,
maybe just, Maybe, Creig i'm a, dreamer maybe.
Speaker 1 (01:16:06):
They'll bring it back To. Austin that's my.
Speaker 3 (01:16:08):
DREAM i think it would have to take something like
that because of the ongoing angst that the oil has
to deal with with hotel pricing for its member institutions coming.
Down it's tough to tell a one a school coming
from The panhandle that you've got to pay two fifty
nine a night per, room you, know to put the guys.
(01:16:28):
In and that's probably at a bargain price off of
that because we know what it can. Do but, hopefully
like you, said we can, dream we can hope for.
That let me start off a getting your thoughts on
last night the college Football playoff. Semmifinal here was a
great finish To Greg Gay miami And Ole. Miss and
now a lot of folks are nodding their head and,
(01:16:49):
say this is what the college Football playoff is supposed
to be all. About and this is What i've been haranguing. About,
SAID i think it you go to sixteen BECAUSE i
think you'd have more of that if you had four
more on camp this games starting it.
Speaker 1 (01:17:01):
Off that's What i'd be off. For how about your
thoughts on?
Speaker 5 (01:17:04):
It i'm all over. That and how about the best?
Sixteen how about no how about no More James, madison
no more Tu lane let's get the best sixteen. Teams
let's get those four extra home, games and and and
you're gonna get the quality of college football that we
saw last. Night, man that WAS i was glued to the.
SCREEN i just couldn't get. Enough that was the, best
(01:17:26):
one of the best fourth. QUARTERS i mean that that
was that ranks up there with with two thousand and
five forty one thirty.
Speaker 1 (01:17:33):
Eight, YEAH i mean we didn't.
Speaker 5 (01:17:35):
Know who's gonna win that game to the very last.
Speaker 1 (01:17:37):
Play, yeah we.
Speaker 5 (01:17:39):
Had and and at that, time the Way Trinidad chandlers was,
Playing i'm, LIKE i wouldn't be shocked if he pulled this.
Off and So i'm happy for the. You Michael irvin is.
Nuts he's absolutely happy for the. You you, know If
Michael clervin's not on, drugs he has a really big.
Speaker 1 (01:17:57):
Problem you.
Speaker 3 (01:18:00):
KNOW i made this comment earlier in the program today
that That trinidad handlist at times reminded me on those
last couple of drives of What vy did both in
The Michigan Rose bowl and in the one AGAINST usc
making plays with his, feet his, arm last second chuck
downfield to an open. Receiver it kind of took me
(01:18:21):
back twenty years thinking about that watching how he played last,
night you, know.
Speaker 5 (01:18:25):
And he took him a while to get, started and
if he got started a little bit, EARLIER i think
they win that. Game but you gotta, Remember miami dropped
four interceptions in that. GAME i mean those. Guys was, like,
man is there like a big stick of parque on the?
Football what what's going? On why can't you hold on
to the. Football and so at one POINT i told my,
(01:18:46):
COUSIN i was, like you, know it's just seventeen to
sixteen And miami should be up by two. TOUCHDOWNS i
MEAN i was, thinking, oh miss might steal this, one
and they almost. Did so it makes me excited about
where the sport is. Going the portal is a. Problem
they got to fix. That but the product on the
field that we saw last. Night give me more of, That,
(01:19:08):
craig give me that all day.
Speaker 2 (01:19:09):
Long for Three yeah, Yeah new twelve team semifinals were
three for three on really good.
Speaker 1 (01:19:15):
Games yeah, yeah that's that's that's a good.
Speaker 5 (01:19:17):
Point and you know, what you know, What, jake and
when it happens organically like it did last, night and
you know that here in a week or, two they're
gonna announce they've got Expanded how could you not, Exactly
they're gonna expand. It and they've just got to make.
Sure And i'm not an elitist by any any stretch
of the. Imagination i'm not an. Elitist but we got
(01:19:41):
to figure out how to get the best. Sixteen and
we know That tulane And Jim madison or not in
the top twelve in college.
Speaker 1 (01:19:50):
Football and they've got to figure that part.
Speaker 5 (01:19:53):
Out AND i, KNOW i know people are very, like,
oh we got to give a little guy a. Chance,
LOOK i got his teeth knocked out out.
Speaker 1 (01:20:00):
Twice.
Speaker 5 (01:20:00):
Yep the little guidance to stay at the kitty table
and let grown folks handle grown folks business In, january
that's just how that.
Speaker 3 (01:20:08):
Is either that or and here's here's another. Thing you,
Know like we just saw an UNBELIEVABLE Fcs National championship. Game,
yeah and The Illinois state had to play in that
round of twenty, four had to go To Southeastern louisiana
win a game there just to get to go to
Upset North Dakota state up In. Fargo maybe maybe you
(01:20:30):
have a play in round out of. That that kind
of like the first four and basketball have a twenty fourteen,
field but have it only be with THE g fives
and a couple of the other, ones and that THE
g fives are not eligibible to be in the round
of sixteen unless they play their way into the round of.
Sixteen maybe maybe something like, that because you AND i both,
know said the university, presidents the ones of THOSE g
(01:20:55):
five institutions are not going to vote on wanting to
do with the expansion of the playoff unless they, somehow
even in an ancillaryo auxiliary, fashion get included in this.
Speaker 5 (01:21:05):
Thing absolutely because they want to avoid any kind of
type of anti trust. Law, right they could come down the.
Pipe the little guy is gonna take his, shot because you,
know just to get into the playoff is a boon
for some of these smaller programs than the money that
they get from making the. Playoffs but nobody wants to
(01:21:25):
see forty seven to. THREE i, KNOW i, know not
in a playoff. Situation and so it's two years in a,
row and, hopefully hopefully they'll figure out a way to
reward the little guy and make sure that the fans
are getting the best product. Possible at the most important
part of the. Season good.
Speaker 3 (01:21:43):
Point Ceder, Golden Texas Sports writer of The year for
The Austin American, statesmen joining us here On Sports RADIO
am Thirteen, hundredson let me get your thoughts on The
long one program now coming off The Centers Bowl game
and getting the win in, that And sark and the
staff dealing with the portal politics and the portal primacy
(01:22:04):
of the money that goes around and the very Interesting you,
KNOW nascar always had the phrase for this called the silly,
season AND i think it's kind of applicable with regard
to the portal season going on right.
Speaker 5 (01:22:17):
Now it's crazy how many guys are, Leaving, craig what
happened to the? Culture you know what happens is guys
want more, money and more money is the answer to.
Everything but, man when you look at the just the
sheer amount of talent that that is bailed, man just
(01:22:38):
off the top of the. Dome DeAndre More Leongela, Foule Derek, Williams,
Quinn Dravan, Weisner White Chocolate, LIVINGSTON. C. J, Baxter Kobe,
Black Jered, Gibson. Treyo as, men it is amazing how
many guys are jumping ship and you know, What, Craig
it only takes one or two people to tell you
(01:22:59):
the wrong.
Speaker 1 (01:22:59):
Thing what do you make At? Texas?
Speaker 5 (01:23:01):
OH i make blah blah. Blah, woh you can get
one hundred thousand more. Here jump into portal and then
and and and you look up and and there's gonna
be some guys because the portal CLOSES i think Next.
Friday except for the four teams that were in the,
semis they're gonna get an extra four. Days but you're
gonna look up next week and that portal's gonna be,
(01:23:21):
closed and it's still gonna be busting at the seams
with players who are unemployed all.
Speaker 1 (01:23:27):
Of a, sudden and what they're gonna.
Speaker 5 (01:23:28):
Do they're gonna, go, Well i'll just declare for the
league and you you'll get cut in a second week of.
Training Cap that's what's gonna. Happen so what's gonna WHAT
i think is gonna. Happen And i'm really kind of.
Concerned greg Uh sart still hasn't landed on an interior.
Guard and there's some there's some names out, there there's
some guys out there that THAT i think they're gonna
(01:23:50):
they might be able to get keep these names in
mind over the next.
Speaker 1 (01:23:54):
Week.
Speaker 5 (01:23:54):
Wisconsin joe Bruner is is a four year starter for The.
Badgers Ohio States tegrisola is a big time. Player those
are a couple of guys that might be On texas's
radar because they've got To they've got to figure out
a way to REPLACE Dj campbell And Cole hudson on that.
Interior their Final Brandon baker And Trevor. Goosby they're okay,
(01:24:16):
there but they've got to get some debt on the
inside line and linebacker as. Well so we're going to
find out a lot About sark over this next week
because you're going to do some wheeling and.
Speaker 1 (01:24:28):
Dealing there's a lot on this. Roster, yeah you know
you've probably heard this.
Speaker 3 (01:24:33):
Said i've heard this as the most common Comment i've
heard coming from campus and from people there on the
inside are that what they're hearing is that a lot
of these, guys whether they're considering the portal or whether
they're definitely in the portal from their quote unquote, agents are.
(01:24:53):
Representatives AND i Thought sark really spoke eloquently about that
down In. Orlando is the of just get in the
portal and it'll all work. Out we'll get you some more.
Money just get in the. Portal that seems to be
the most commonly repeated phrase to a lot of these,
guys from family, members, agents pseudo, agents whatever you want
(01:25:15):
to call, them just get in the portal and we'll
find you some.
Speaker 5 (01:25:18):
Money and the thing is, This i'm a bargain basement,
Shopper Graig bev AND i don't Go christmas shopping. Anymore
we Go christmas shopping in Mid january when the sales
hit there you, go what After? Christmas sale is? Coming it's, Coming,
craig and there's gonna be some good talent at bargain basement.
Speaker 1 (01:25:41):
Prices january.
Speaker 5 (01:25:43):
Fifteenth throwers, around and you're an offensive tackle or a
guard or a, backer and you've been asking for five hundred,
thousand And sarki calls you and, SAYS i got to.
Fifty get me on a plane In. Austin it's amazing
how fast that price is going to cut down when
that clock is. Ticking and and for any receiver out,
(01:26:04):
there Cam, COLEMAN i know a lot of people want Cam.
Coleman but if Cam, coleman AND i know he's, not
if he's listening right, Now i'm gonna ask, You, cam
do you want to play With Brandon soreersby or do
you want to play With Arch. Manny that's an easy, Call,
cam that's an easy.
Speaker 1 (01:26:21):
Call do you want to live In austin or loveck you?
Wanna do you?
Speaker 5 (01:26:24):
Want do you want you Want? Tumbleweeds or do you
or do you want the five to one?
Speaker 1 (01:26:29):
Too give?
Speaker 5 (01:26:30):
Me you, Know Cody campbell is a. Guy he is right,
south he is breaking. Bread but you, know and if
you offer me three million to live in Love it
for a, Year i'm just Gonna i'm just gonna get
my allergy medicine, updating and Then i'm just gonna.
Speaker 1 (01:26:47):
Go but but if.
Speaker 5 (01:26:48):
You're offering If texas goes two point five And ted goes,
three you take the two point five and you come
play With arch because the chances are you're gonna have
much bigger numbers here and then the collectives that go
along with. That this is where you need to, Be Cam,
Coleman this is where you need to. Become To, Austin
(01:27:11):
Craig waye will take good care of.
Speaker 1 (01:27:12):
You and said we'll write good things about. You is
it uh to?
Speaker 3 (01:27:18):
You does it seem Like Cody campbell is boom pickings on.
Speaker 1 (01:27:23):
Steroids absolutely absolutely boom pickings on.
Speaker 5 (01:27:29):
Steroids and you give a softball player a million, bucks.
Speaker 1 (01:27:33):
Man you got money to. BURN i watched.
Speaker 5 (01:27:36):
Her she's, good but it's a million dollars. Good he did,
THAT i heard because his wife is a softball. Fan and,
Okay i'm, All i'm all about. That good for, Them
BUT i think if you're if you're part of a winning.
Situation and let me let me, Say Texas tech is
on the. Rise joey mcguars don't have a Job craig In,
(01:27:57):
Lubbock and maybe it does run through love now That
texas is no longer in The big. Twelve BUT i
WOULD i would much rather play with Arch manning for
who is for my? Money With Sam levitt and swords the,
three that's one of the three best returning quarterbacks In.
America AND i don't, know not too many people played
(01:28:19):
as well as Arch manning last five.
Speaker 1 (01:28:20):
Games he was, electric, right no, doubt no.
Speaker 3 (01:28:23):
Doubt H Cedra goldens Was, okay let me get your
thoughts first of, all who do you got, Tonight indiana Or?
Speaker 5 (01:28:28):
Oregon, Man i'm Gonna i've gotta go with with With
Fernando mendoza in, COMPANY i just think they're on. ONE
i THINK i think That Kurtz signetti is is is
a boss and uh they they Own they've Beaten oregon
twice in the last couple of. Years So i'm going
with the with the hot. TEAM i have them winning
(01:28:51):
at all before the tournament. Started and But i'm telling, You,
Miami miamis shown me something and, UH i just don't
Think Carson beck can do that. AGAIN i really. DON'T
i don't Think Carson bek's gonna do that. Again So
i'm Taking i'm Taking indiana to win tonight and Then
indiana to win the.
Speaker 3 (01:29:07):
Championship, okay and now we're on the cusp of THE nfl.
Playoffs what stands out to you most about Wild Card?
Speaker 1 (01:29:13):
Weekend?
Speaker 5 (01:29:14):
Oh what stands up most IS i have no idea
who the BEST nfl right? Now don't we usually, Know, Craig.
Speaker 1 (01:29:21):
We usually have a pretty good, indication don't. We do
you really believe in Bo?
Speaker 5 (01:29:26):
Nicks do you really think The Denver bronco is going
to be able to score enough points.
Speaker 1 (01:29:30):
To win this? Tournament Sam?
Speaker 5 (01:29:32):
Donald Sam, DONALD i watched him throw four picks game
three weeks, ago and so WHAT i see is a
real opportunity for two teams that are playing one another this.
WEEKEND i think The Buffalo jacksonville winner is going to
go to the Super.
Speaker 1 (01:29:52):
BOWL i.
Speaker 5 (01:29:52):
Believe, WOW i don't believe In New england. YET i,
mean you, really Ramondre stevenson running for one fifty, years
you think that's gonna happen every. WEEK i Love, RABEL
i Love, RABEL i LOVE i love the culture. There
BUT i think That Trevor lawrence is playing as well
as anyone in the. LEAGUE i think THAT i think
(01:30:13):
That Josh, allen there's no my, homes there's no burrow
to keep. You you're gonna Let drake may keep, you you,
know from from from getting Or Trevor lawrence keep you
from getting. THERE i like the winner of that game
in THE afc and then THE.
Speaker 1 (01:30:29):
Nfc, MAN.
Speaker 5 (01:30:34):
I think The Los Angeles rams are the best team
in THE, nfc even though they're just a little squirrely
that give away the, leads but they're the most talented.
Team two good running, backs the arguably the best receiver
p the Cou Davonte adams is going to be back
from That. Hammy they have like eight tight ends who
are all very good to catch the, football and they
(01:30:54):
have good pass. Rush Jared versus is a. BEAST i
like The rams in THE nfc right.
Speaker 3 (01:30:59):
Now my biggest question about them as A rams, fan
my biggest question is can they win In?
Speaker 1 (01:31:04):
Philly can they win In? Chicago that's that's the.
Speaker 3 (01:31:07):
Thing and as we get to Later january with the,
temperatures they proved last year that they could play.
Speaker 5 (01:31:13):
One italy last, year they should have won last.
Speaker 1 (01:31:16):
Year, Craig, yeah they get all they could handle last.
Speaker 5 (01:31:18):
Year i'm not big On Jalen hurts right. Now there's
something going on With Jalen hurts and he doesn't have
that that that swag that he's had the last couple of.
Years and we Know saquan is different this year than
he was last. Year SO i think The rams is
gonna have to come via. Road BUT i think The
rams are a veteran. Team they've they've Got Matt stafford
(01:31:42):
on a heater and and if they if they can
win this game and you got you gotta think they're
gonna Be. CAROLINA i really like their chances to. Advance
and it was not wouldn't be the first time A
wildcard team went road road road to get.
Speaker 3 (01:31:57):

when we were. KIDS i took my kids, there And
i'm trying to get my daughter to take my grandkids.
There so we can say six generations of ways have
eaten ice cream From Yum. Yum and then There's Stamey's
barbecue across the street from The Greensboro, coliseum which is
(01:32:40):
kind of one of the home churches of The, north
The carolina style of barbecue that. Started it's kind of
the ground one of the ground zero. Places so you,

Speaker 3 (01:33:21):
Mountains it's just kind of Like austin was forty years,
ago set in the. Mountains it's really. Cool and then
we go To greensboro and then and So i'm mak
it a young young price cream or stays for barbecue
or both and see some see some old, friends and
then we head down to the coast.

Center See Herb. Alpert so the man who supplies our inconceivable,
music the Great Herb alpert and the Team Wada. BRASS
i think he's ninety four now, wow and he's still
blowing the horn and cranking it. Out it's. Great we've
(01:35:58):
seen him TWICE i think in the past whatever six seven,
years and he keeps, touring so we're gonna keep going
and see.
Speaker 1 (01:36:04):
Him so, yeah, yeah it's. Great so we're looking forward to.
Speaker 2 (01:36:07):
That.
Speaker 3 (01:36:08):
OKAY i wanted to go back to THIS nfl thing
for a. Moment uh. Uh and and hear From Demiko
ryans because uh we we got a chance to hear
From demiko, earlier uh back in the in the, show
uh to to hear from him on getting ready for
(01:36:30):
this matchup with The Pittsburgh steelers On monday. Night so
he was asked ABOUT Dk metcalf's return and what it
means to The Pittsburgh steeler.
Speaker 11 (01:36:40):
Offense, okay it gives, them you, know their full offense
where you, know he lines up as an outside. Receiver
he does a you, know outstanding. Job but just playing,
physical that's the one thing that sticks out for me with.
Him he's a physical. Receiver whether he's running the go, ball, slants,
whatever it looks. Like he plays. Physical so we have
to challenge. Him we have to definitely step up to
(01:37:02):
the challenge, there and we had to play physical as
well versus.
Speaker 1 (01:37:05):
Him it's going to be a tough.
Speaker 11 (01:37:07):
Challenge he's done a great job his entire career of
making big plays down the field AND i know they're
excited to get him back because he's such a huge
part of their offense And aaron will definitely look to.
Speaker 5 (01:37:17):
Go to him a.
Speaker 11 (01:37:18):
Ton so we have our hands full when it comes
to just challenging him and trying to make a play
when the ball is.
Speaker 3 (01:37:23):
Up, okay speaking Of aaron as he, did he was
talking About Aaron rodgers and speaking of, challenges the challenge
of going up Against Aaron rodgers and what it, means
And aaron's.
Speaker 1 (01:37:33):
He had a ton of success in his.
Speaker 11 (01:37:35):
LEAGUE i mentioned, earlier he's one of the the best
quarterbacks to play this, game and he's that way for a.
Reason he's a very smart. Guy does a really good
job of taking a couple of plays to the line
of scrimmage and trying to get them into the most advantageous.
Play when he sees the defense and he sees you,
know what he's, facing and he sees a weakness of
(01:37:56):
where he can get the ball out, quick that's where
he's going to go with the. Football so for, us
it's not so much of a chess match for. Us,
defensively we know he's he's going to figure out what you're,
doing how you're, disguising all those. Things he's going to
be about us collectively as a, team not just About Aaron.
Rodgers it's our defense versus their. Offense they have a
ton of playmakers Who aaron gets the ball, too that
(01:38:18):
do a really great job in space and making guys,
Miss so we have to do a great job of
tackling whoever gets the.
Speaker 1 (01:38:23):
Football you.
Speaker 3 (01:38:24):
Know the other thing he has to prepare his team
for field conditions At Actor Sure, stadium a stadium where
the win howls of both. Ends we saw that on
display with the missed kicks in the at the end
of The Baltimore pittsburgh game and in the field conditions
themselves that looked like and looking like they'd already replaced
the side in the center of the. Field that's never
a good sign when you're having to do. That it
(01:38:46):
can be soft and. Soggy so he's asked about preparing
his team for those field conditions and atmospheric conditions In.
Speaker 11 (01:38:54):
Pittsburgh, now we make sure we're we're prepared in all
all facet of the.
Speaker 1 (01:38:59):
Game we do our.
Speaker 11 (01:39:00):
Preparation it's not just you, know the film and the
plays and what we, run but we'll do our. Thing you,
know when it comes to preparing for the, weather for the,
field all those. Things our equipment staff is will averse
in those areas to get us everything that we need
to be ready to.
Speaker 3 (01:39:15):
Go all, Right so in the final analysis there For Demiko,
ryans what type of game is he anticipating that his
team will encounter Against.
Speaker 11 (01:39:25):
Pittsburgh this game here is is a really great matchup
because when you when you watch The steelers and you
watch The, texans you're going to get two physical football. Teams,
Right it's going to be old school. Football it's going
to be physical on both. Sides and that's you shouldn't
BE i can't get more excited about, it, right because
that's the thing that stands. Out Coach tomlin has always
(01:39:46):
done an outstanding job with this. Team he had a
ton of success for a. Reason they play the right,
way complimentary football all three. Phases their special teams, unit they're,
physical they're. Aggressive, offensively they do a great job of
of run, blocking past. Blocking their physical linemen up front
who sustained blocks. Well, defensively their line is their THEIR
(01:40:07):
d line is probably one of the best units you
know in the. League and not, know a lot of
credit goes to the edge, players but they're three interior.
Guys they are disruptive, players big guys who do a
great job of getting off, blocks disrupting in the run.
Speaker 1 (01:40:21):
Game so it's physical.
Speaker 11 (01:40:22):
Game, right and that's what if you like, football that's
what you should be. About So i'm about that And
i'm ready to get after.
Speaker 3 (01:40:28):
It Demiko ryan's ready to get after it with His Houston.
Texans you will hear that game here on thirteen Hundred
Zone monday night at six forty. Five speaking, which you,
