Speaker 1 (00:01):
Busy basketball weekend, a busy baseball weekend, a busy softball
weekend in shorts, a busy weekend, and a successful one
for the University of Texas Athletics. Good afternoon, and everybody,
welcome to the program here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred of Zone. My name is Craig Wait. Thanks so
much for joining us. Joined by the producer Jay Herman,
(00:24):
who was scrambling badly to make sure we were on
the air. There was a little bit of of how
two thousand and one, what are you doing?
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Jay?
Speaker 1 (00:33):
It was trying to keep you out from taking control
of the board there at the start.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
Always fighting machines in here.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
It's our own personal rage against the machine. But anyway,
we understand if you missed a little bit of that
montage on the front end of it with the men's
basketball win over Missouri followed by the women's basketball win
at Tennessee yesterday, no worries. We'll re that at the
start of the four o'clock hour. Got a little baseball
(01:03):
softball montage coming for you to start the three o'clock hour.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
So, like we.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
Said, busy day, busy weekend, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, which saw
those four team sports go unbeaten through the weekend. Softball
had to dodge the elements one two games Friday, couldn't
play Saturday, came back one two games yesterday, so they
went four and oh over the weekend. Long Worn Baseball
(01:30):
won all three of its games. Had to move the
start time around a little bit for the Saturday game,
let's say a little bit. It's supposed to be two,
and then they made a decision at advance to move
it forward to noon, and then they realized that wasn't
gonna work because of the weather, so then they moved
(01:50):
it back to six thirty and they were able to
get all of that ball game in. And then yesterday,
under absolutely beautiful conditions, the long and finished off that
three game weekend series sweep of UC Davis. And then
how about that weekend for men's and women's basketball, walg
Worn men picking up the road win at Missouri by seventeen.
(02:16):
They won eighty five to sixty. They kind of wanted
going away at the end because it was really tight
in the first half. Back Texas trailed by five early,
came back and they were down to point the final
seconds half when Tremont and Mark drove the length to
the floor, got the bucket and won, hit the free throw.
Texas aot thirty three, thirty one, and they did not
look back after that. Ever, trailed in the second half
(02:39):
and slowly but surely pulled away and that was the
the you might say, an important win in terms of
the swing game nature of this conference season for Texas. Yes,
they won four in a row and they won five
of their last six. I think it is all important,
(03:00):
and it's been reflected in what I've seen in terms
of the bracketological prognostications. A real swing game because Missouri
had won three in a row and four either last
five like Texas had going into the game, and for
Texas to go in there and when going away in
Columbia was a huge boost to the log warns and
(03:21):
Missouri takes a hit off of that, but it really
does help Texas. Now they're back home for a game,
certainly a winnable game against an LSU team that's been
dangerous at times but more often than not has come
up short. So that's going to be tomorrow night and
a chance to get to five in a row before
going to Georgia to take on a suddenly desperate Georgia
(03:44):
Bulldog team that lost at Oklahoma over the weekend and
has now struggled of late, so a chance for long
Wrarns to continue to maintain speed.
Speaker 4 (03:54):
For the Texas women.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
It was certainly a bounce back victory beating the Tennessee
Volunteers sixty five sixty three in Knoxville yesterday after sustaining
that humbling defeat at Vanderbilt on Thursday night. And we're
going to hear from Vic Schaeffer about that, not only
about how his team responded and the whole heart thing.
(04:18):
It's interesting because this is Heart Month, you know here
in February, but saying the other night that his team
had no heart after the loss to Vanderbilt, and he
did say, he made a point to say, and you'll
hear it in his comments that they had heart.
Speaker 4 (04:31):
They just didn't They.
Speaker 1 (04:34):
Didn't show it or have it on Thursday night, but
they certainly had it yesterday, which they had to to
get the win at Tennessee. But it also goes into
something else too, And this was an interesting phenomenon that
came up over the course of the weekend, and it
deals with the relationship between coaches and players, and it
(04:58):
came down to stern words that Vic shave her head
for his team after Thursday's loss, that Kim Caldwell had
for her Tennessee team after they had lost not yesterday,
a couple of.
Speaker 4 (05:10):
Days prior, and.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
Then more to the point, what happened earlier this week
on the men's side, Jerome Tang at Kansas State took
his team to task after a loss to Cincinnati and
talked about an absence of heart and guts and all
that other kind of stuff, and it wound.
Speaker 4 (05:29):
Up costing him his job.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
Now the main thing that cost him his job is
Kansas is I think one to eleven.
Speaker 4 (05:35):
The big twelve are really struggling.
Speaker 1 (05:37):
But he was fired last night, as the university says,
for costs, for having disrespectful comments about the school and
the program and student athletes and things like that. Obviously,
the difference in firing for cause means you don't have
to pay out the contract, which means you know, they
would have been on the hook for over eighteen million dollars.
Speaker 4 (06:00):
Clearly, this is not done yet.
Speaker 5 (06:02):
And.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
Jerom Tang has representations going to fight this. I have
a feeling as things going to wind up being settled
away from that, but it does bring to mind the
other issue of how coaches can, could and should talk
to their teams. And there's a little bit of that
in a one on one that Roger Wallace had with
(06:25):
Vic Schaeffer after the game. We're going to hear that
as well, because Vic it talks about Vic puts it
in more familial terms, like about my family and how
I would talk to them as if they were my
daughters and it. We'll hear all of that coming up
here in just a few moments, all right. So the
story with Jake Carman is is that Jake was supposed
(06:48):
to call the Saltball doubleheader on Saturday. Now, you went
out there on Friday. You did call what the fourth
inning of each of the two double header Texas wins
while working with Cameron Parker on the wins over all
high I was staying CircUse on Friday, correct.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
That's dead on.
Speaker 5 (07:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (07:02):
I was shadowing Cameron and stepped into to call one
inning in each of those games, which turns out the fourth.
It's a good thing I didn't choose the fifth because
the run rule was enacted. I would have called maybe
a couple of half innings instead.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
Yeah, okay, so you did that. You've done all this
prep work. You're ready to call two games on Saturday.
Describe the day as it was unfolding when you were
over there at McCombs.
Speaker 6 (07:25):
Well, the day started even earlier than that, because I had,
you know, been in communication obviously with the Texas Softball
staff about there's weather coming in.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
There's a chance that this will get pushed back.
Speaker 6 (07:38):
Then, as you saw the announcement if you're following along
on social media with the incoming rain, obviously Baseball moved
their game back. Softball decided, okay, they're going to play
one game instead of two, started five instead of two thirty.
So I thought, okay, that just pushes things back a
little bit. I'd obviously been ready for the earlier start,
so I get, you know, a little bit more, cleaning
(07:59):
up a couple of chores around the apartment. Then I hear, well,
they're discussing starting after this game. Not official, but they're
discussing it. So I think, shoot, I better get over there.
I hustle over. The rain starts to pick up. It
hadn't been raining that hard throughout the morning, but the
first heavy bands came through in the afternoon, I go
through the rain.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
Get into the stadium.
Speaker 6 (08:19):
The first thing I see when I get set up
at my spot in the booth is the Northern Illinois
team walking to their bush, and I think that's not
a good sign. The scoreboard is still frozen there in
the fourth inning when they had entered a rain delay.
While I was driving over, I hear about radio silence
(08:41):
for a good thirty to forty minutes. All of a sudden,
the sids come over and say, hey, start packing up
slowly because there's a chance this is going to get bagged.
Oh boy, And then it did, and my heart sank.
Obviously I was disappointed.
Speaker 1 (08:59):
Yeah, then I thought I even was joking around with
Cameron Parker because Cam called yesterday's game the doubleheader. And
Andrew Haynes will be back this week. He was out
in California for his grandfather's ninetieth birthday party. So the
regular voice of Texas Softball, Andrew Haynes will be back
for the games this week. But we were doing the
(09:20):
musical chairs thing between Cam and Jake to get the
doubleheader Friday, the doubleheader Saturday, and the single game covered
on Sundays, so they wound up playing just three of
the five scheduled games and the two games they didn't
get to play with the two that Jake was due
to call. So I was I was kidding around with
Cameron yesterday. I said, what did did Jake not campaign
(09:40):
you want to do the last game the Northern Nolan.
Speaker 4 (09:42):
He said he couldn't.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
He had to go back to Houston because you were
in Houston attending to Valentine's activities.
Speaker 4 (09:48):
Is that correct?
Speaker 3 (09:48):
Well, I was actually attending a friend's wedding.
Speaker 4 (09:51):
Oh, that's right.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
Had it just been maybe.
Speaker 6 (09:54):
Regularly scheduled Valentine's activities, there might have been some exceptions
to be had there. But you know, I had r
s vp'd I got to go see my good friends
get married, and you know a tucks had been purchased
and it was it was two.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
But we're also supposed to be in a marathon that
were a ten k run ten k on Austin Marathon weekend,
and you're in a suit for your fantasy football team
finishing in last place or something like that.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
That could wait. That could wait. That is rescheduled for May.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
But I mean, didn't you originally have that scheduled on
the same weekend.
Speaker 6 (10:25):
As the wedding that was going to be Saturday morning,
and it was a Sunday wedding.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
Okay, that's ample time, right right.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
So then so then comes the invitation to work two
games on Saturday, and I can't. We can put that
off on the other deal, right, Let's move some things
around and then those two games get boxed. Yeah, and
you wind up doing it. Not that you It would
have been a good idea for you to try to
run that marat that that ten K on Saturday in
the suit, right, No, it would not be not in
the rain.
Speaker 4 (10:48):
That would not have been.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
Good, especially not a ten k.
Speaker 6 (10:50):
I'm only on the hook for a five don't any ideah.
Speaker 1 (10:53):
Okay, all right, all right, all right, so five k
okay had to do. But even still five K in
a suit in the rain. Well, now I'm going to
be doing it in the heat.
Speaker 6 (11:01):
Yeah, yeah, I suppose rain's a little bit easier if
you're not wanting to overheat.
Speaker 1 (11:08):
Well that's a good point. I mean, does it have
to be a five k here in town? Could you
not go find another five k in the in the
temperate climate situations and do.
Speaker 4 (11:19):
It that way?
Speaker 6 (11:20):
I was going to go do it in Houston. Okay
that was the plan. Oh okay, not here and that way.
Not only am I running, but my girlfriend Allison can
film the content.
Speaker 4 (11:30):
Ok well the whole reason.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
Yeah, I'm doing this.
Speaker 4 (11:32):
Yeah yeah, but a last concept alas.
Speaker 3 (11:36):
All I was left with was a rainy drive.
Speaker 6 (11:39):
I'm driving with the storm, the clouds following me over
my head like a cartoon as I drove from Austin
to Houston in defeat.
Speaker 4 (11:48):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (11:49):
Well, like we said, it was a pretty busy weekend,
pretty active weekend. I had a little adventure myself after
calling the Longhorn baseball game on Friday night, the season
opener Saturday morning, to fly out to Missouri now from
the department of out smarting oneself.
Speaker 4 (12:09):
I had.
Speaker 1 (12:12):
Decided that because rain was moving into the air, it
was just rain. It wasn't going to be like icy
winter storm stuff. So the rain, but just to be
on the safe side. I got to the airport like
about four fifteen in the morning due to fly out
on a six am flight, but there was a five
am so I'll go ahead and get up to DFW
right now, which which I did. It was a little
(12:33):
delayed taking off due to a mechanical. But I saw
I could look two dates, two gates down and see
the plane that I was supposed to be on the
fly at six am and not even pulled into the
gay So I thought, so, I definitely made the right decision.
Speaker 4 (12:46):
But get to the DFW.
Speaker 1 (12:47):
It doesn't matter anyway, because the flight to Columbia was canceled.
So now you think, oh, no, what's going to happen?
Except I had just gone through this six weeks earlier,
going for Orlando from Orlando to try to catch that
ten forty am that was due to a plain mechanical
issue pulling out of Orlando. One of these days I'll
be able to get on that ten forty am flight
(13:07):
to Columbia land at noon. But it wasn't on New
Year's Day, and it didn't happen Saturday. But I did
exactly what I did on New Year's Day. I got
the airline to rewrap me to Saint Louis, picked up
the rental car there and drove it to Columbia.
Speaker 4 (13:20):
It made him plenty of time. I mean, it was
a seven thirty game.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
I was in Columbia by one thirty and afternoon, so
there was no issue with that but it was just
a matter of kind of a rescheduling weekend.
Speaker 4 (13:31):
That's what it kind of was all the way around.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
And then I was there obviously to call the long
worn men's basketball game, came home with them on the
happy charter flight home and then back to the ballpark yesterday.
Speaker 4 (13:43):
And it was.
Speaker 1 (13:46):
A nice way to end the weekend with a sweep
and then driving home listening to Roger Wallis and Kathy
Harshen calling in of the women's game and how that
ultimately turned out. And so that was good for Texas
as well. In fact, the ap Pole kept Texas at
number four despite the loss to Vanderbilt, because Vanderbilt lost
to Georgia yesterday, so it was like, well, you know,
(14:08):
you know, you got that one big win and then
went on the road and did nothing with it. So
so the ap Pole kept Texas at number four. Now
the ends He's first reveal came out of the weekend
and they had put Vanderbilt into that fourth number one
seed and had Texas as the top number two.
Speaker 4 (14:24):
Scene.
Speaker 1 (14:25):
If you think, well, there's not that much difference, well
here's the difference. They had Texas slated to be in
Sacramento and in the region where UCLA was the number
one seed, So we'll see, I mean, you still flew it.
There's going to be a couple more of those reveals.
So now that Texas is in a tie for second,
(14:46):
they can continue to go on or at least in
the lost column. They play at Arkansas on Thursday night
and a chance to add to the win total. For
being completely honest, because Arkansas hasn't won a game in
conference play yet.
Speaker 4 (14:57):
They're struggling. So the Texas women will play there.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
They'll be three straight on the road after they had
their three straight at home, and so we're you know,
talking about rounding the far turn and getting ready for
the stretch drive of the season, both of the men
and the women. So we'll break down a lot more
of that. We'll talk about all of that. We'll look
at long run baseball. There are some conference player of
(15:22):
the Week honors in basketball and.
Speaker 4 (15:25):
Baseball that'll be discussed.
Speaker 1 (15:27):
We do have inconceivable this hour, and you might say
it's a little bit of Florida man or Florida woman
left over because it happened during the weekend there and
instead of saving him for next week, it kind of
goes with this and I'll we'll get to that as well.
As always, we do have the text line open for
(15:48):
your questions, your thoughts, your comments. You need only text
the word texts followed by your question or comment to
eight one five three zero. So text the word Texas
followed by your question or comment to eight one five
three zero. Standard messaging and data rates may apply. Glad
to have you with us on a Monday. We know
many of you are out with the President's Day holiday,
(16:10):
so if you're driving around, be careful out there, and
glad to have you with us here on sports Radio
AM thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app hearing
from the game Saturday night and Nick Cody a big
basket there and what a performance he delivered off the
bench and yes apropos with the music for the rain.
Speaker 4 (16:30):
It was a rainy weekend.
Speaker 1 (16:31):
It was raining up in Missouri, pouring rain, a little
bumpy flights going in and little bumpy flights coming out
and all worked down. It was a beautiful day yesterday,
beautiful day to day and I don't think we're getting
any rain for a few days yet. Anyway, here on
Monday on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone let's hear
from Sean Miller, the long worns head coach.
Speaker 4 (16:52):
He had a zoom.
Speaker 1 (16:54):
Media availability just a little while ago and starts off
with some comments.
Speaker 7 (17:00):
I think number one for us here, we're obviously very
excited about tomorrow's game against LSU, being that we're back
home in the Moody Center and you know, really looking
forward to what I would think would be a great crowd.
You know, our students have been amazing, in particular our
last home game against Old miss and we're looking obviously
(17:22):
to finish strong, be at our very best here as
February is alive and well, and that home court advantage
late in the year, we felt it at Missouri with
the crowd that they had, and hopefully we can have
the best crowd possible we can have tomorrow night, and
certainly we're gonna need it. We have to be ready
to go, and every night in this league is a
(17:43):
tough test, and we're looking to build on some recent
good play.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
Yeah, that's sustained them in a four game winning streak.
He talked about Missouri's crowd. It was their first sellout
of the season Saturday night, and it was they try
to get in it several times in the second half
when when it was close, and then it seemed like
every time that they were really in it, somebody would
(18:08):
come up with a big shot, be it Monus focatitis
or obviously Dylan Swain or Tremont Mark or Jordan Pope.
Somebody would hit a big shot and then it would
quiet him and it would go down, and then a
few minutes later, try to get ramped up again, and
again the long words would come up with a big play.
Speaker 4 (18:23):
I mentioned Nick.
Speaker 1 (18:24):
Cody Lacina Treier, of course, has had a little problem
with the meniscus.
Speaker 4 (18:31):
And the knee.
Speaker 1 (18:31):
It was the same knee that caused him to miss
all of last season at Xavier. And if you're wondering
about his career, he played really well when he was
at Long Beach and part of an NCAA tournament team there,
but was unable to make the trip. Did not even
make the trip up to Columbia. Nick Cody comes off
(18:51):
the bench, hadn't had any real productivity since like first second,
third game of the year, and he had nine points
and six rebounds. Play tough and so Sean Miller was asked,
was it a setback that Trailor he suffered and as
Nick Cody earned more minutes as a result of what
he did coming off the bench in the place of
the injured Traori.
Speaker 5 (19:13):
Yeah, Lassine is really day to day.
Speaker 7 (19:15):
He just has knee soreness, you know, from the different
things that that he's gone through in the last year
and a half, and we just want to make sure
he's completely healthy when we put him out there to play.
So we'll take a look at him here today and then,
you know, like we've been doing, make the call and
what's in his best interest and also our teams. Nick
(19:36):
Cody was a big reason that we were able to
beat Missouri. I thought he came in the game with
a lot of confidence. It was great to see him
catch the ball and finish the way he did.
Speaker 5 (19:46):
On offense. You know, I thought a number.
Speaker 7 (19:49):
Of plays that may appear to be simple weren't because
Missouri has really good size around the basket and they're
not an easy team to score against. But you know,
he played off of the pick and roll, caught some
great passes from his teammates, had a couple offensive rebounds.
You know, I think he had six rebounds, three on offense,
three on defense. And then defensively, you know, he went
(20:11):
vertical and was where he was supposed to be, and
I thought did a really good job, gave us some
great minutes. You know, I'm both happy for Nick and
also equally proud of him. It's not easy to stay
ready and get ready when your time is called upon.
It's been, you know, a long stretch since he's played
in a game yet I think I've shared with you
(20:33):
guys that his process in terms of his every day
has improved. And it's funny how that works out. When
you work hard and you start to work hard more often,
when you're more consistent with who you are every day,
all of a sudden, when that opportunity comes and inevitably will,
(20:54):
you're ready for it. So you know, hopefully Nick can
take that, build from it and make our team better
and deeper. As we're here in February.
Speaker 1 (21:03):
Now, yeah, could wind up being a factor after all
is said and done. All right, we'll hear more from
Sean Miller during the course of the program. I'm going
to hear from Vick Schaeffer.
Speaker 4 (21:16):
From Reddit Charlene McCombs field.
Speaker 8 (21:19):
It's day two of the VVO Classic, The one one

battle to come to the plate here in this inning
and number thirteen.
Speaker 4 (21:47):
It's a line.
Speaker 8 (21:48):
Drive off the left center wall. Henry will score at

Speaker 3 (21:56):

eight Robins and the log Horns taking a three to

Speaker 4 (23:33):

one for Long Worn Baseball Weekend number two for Texas
Softball here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Glad to have you with us Craig Way alongside the
producer Jay Carman. That was Jake's voice you heard on
one of those highlights in there, because you got you
got to call one inning there in each of the
two games on Friday, right right.
Speaker 3 (25:43):
And it's a good strikeouts and the inning.
Speaker 6 (25:45):
My most exciting plays were actually defensive plays made by
Ohio State and Syracuse, but good experience.
Speaker 1 (25:50):
Nonetheless, one could make the argument, and it's a pretty
defensible one, that the best long worn plays in a
nine to one win yesterday were not they were defense.
Dylan Valantis spectacular on the mound casey Borba not once
but twice, got a line shot, snagged it with a
(26:11):
runner taken off from first on the crack of the bat,
and just came down and touched the base for double
play twice to end innings. And he also had a
sixty four to three double play in there, so toward
that end. By the way, Dylan Valantis was named the
co Pitcher of the Week in the SEC Player of
the Week was Cayden Surrell of Texas A and M.
(26:31):
He was nine for fifteen at the plate. He had
had himself quite a weekend. L J. Mercurious for Oklahoma,
went five and a third and struck out twelve batters
in the Cowboys win or rather than the Sooners win
of the Cowboys of Oklahoma State. A little bedlam non
conference baseball there in Arlington and Dylan Valantis career long
(26:53):
seven innings because he'd been the closer last year, so
he starts. He completed the first four inning and thirty
six pitches nine pitches per inning. First two pitches were
first two innings, were six pitches in each of the
first two innings.
Speaker 6 (27:08):
And it's and it's so funny, right because you have
less time around the stadium for people to look around
and say, hey, hey, look, look what's going on up there.
But actually, because he'd thrown so few pitches, you've got
more reason to, you know, say hey, I mean you
might want to turn the game on.
Speaker 1 (27:20):
Yeah, he technically had a no hitter through five. There
was a scoring decision made and it went against Valantis
and four Volana's on the same play. There was a
number a hit out front of the mound, and he
kind of had to get to it. Really, it really
(27:41):
had the only the best shot to get to it
did and he was kind of off balanced and threw
wildly down the back. I think the runner would have
beaten out, and originally was ruled an infield single, but
it didn't change to an error, and they're like, okay, well,
all right, he still has a no hitter going on.
Then in the sixth inning, he gives up a three
(28:02):
base error when Anthony pack Junior misplayed a fly ball
in right field, and so the runner got to third,
and then he gave up an RBI double and that
was the first hit.
Speaker 4 (28:13):
But nothing more than that. He did a.
Speaker 1 (28:16):
Tremendous job, did Valantis, and in fact, he retired fourteen
of the first sixteen batters he faced, and Zach Story
broke up the no hit bid with a double the
left center but Valanis cruised through the lineup after that.
He faced a minimum through five innings. Overall, fifty six
of his seventy eight pitches were strikes. So in this
(28:39):
experiment to see if he winds up being a starter
instead of the closer, so far so good. And that's
kind of what Jim Schlosnagel told Keith Morland after the game.
We'll bring that conversation to you here in a little
bit what he told him about that. Also coming up
(29:03):
this hour, I want you to hear from Vic Shaffer.
Texas women win their game over Tennessee. Very good win.
In fact, you know, they've played all these ranked opponents,
and they played all these top five opponents, but that
was their first road win over a ranked opponent this
(29:25):
season because most of the just the way the schedule fell,
most of the in conference play, most of the ranked
teams that were playing, or most of the teams that
were playing on the road were not ranked. The ones
that were were really good ones South Carolina, LSU, and Vanderbilt.
So that was their first road win over a ranked opponent. However,
it was I think their fifth top ten win of
(29:47):
the season, so they're back on track. But we're gonna
hear Vick Shaffer's thoughts on some things, so we'll do
that as well. And obviously we're more than happy to
avail ourselves of your questions, your thoughts, your comments, even
here on this holiday afternoon, because there are many of
(30:10):
you of you who are out there and yet are
enjoying the holiday, the President's Day holidays, you're not having
to work, so that's that's good.
Speaker 4 (30:21):
Glad that that is working out for you.
Speaker 1 (30:25):
And we're still If you're out and about or maybe
you're just hanging out at home or whatever and you
want to weigh in on something, feel free to do so.
Speaker 4 (30:37):
Got no problem with doing that as well.
Speaker 1 (30:40):
But again, if you want to text the program, you
text the word Texas followed by your question or comment
to eight one five three zero. Standard messaging and data
rates may apply before the break. Here's a couple of
things we'll get catch up. Somebody said the Rocky Mountain
High Club. There, we've heard of the Mile High Club
(31:04):
and fly that would be the right. Somebody said Almond
Joy would be their choice for if you could only
have one candy bar to eat, and not that you
only get to eat one more of the rest of
your life, or that you have to eat it every time,
but I eat it every day or whatever. But if
for the rest of your life, if you're only allowed
one particular brand, one particular variety, one particular candy bar,
(31:29):
what would it be?
Speaker 4 (31:30):
I said?
Speaker 1 (31:30):
Mind for me it'd probably be Snickers either that or
a Hershy Special Dark.
Speaker 4 (31:34):
I like that too, that's really good.
Speaker 5 (31:36):
I like those.
Speaker 1 (31:38):
So somebody says almond joy for him, and it agreed
with me on the water burger. What about you, I
didn't ask you if you have one candy bar. Oh well, now,
the thin mints don't count Let's cookies. And by the way,
I did try it, Jakevy. Try a couple of the
frozen thin mints. Those we're good. I like those, and
I know a lot of people like it. I'm not
a real big mint guy with my chocolate. But Church
(32:00):
and State, Yeah, a little bit, like I tell I
tell my wife, I don't like fruit with the meat.
In other words, I'm not a big mango chutney glaze guy.
Speaker 4 (32:11):
You know, uh, very specific example.
Speaker 1 (32:13):
Well, like because people are a poor croached or or
or beat it's got the glaze ut an orange chicken.
That's different. Yeah, that's a particular right, I do like that.
Or a stir fry, yes that I like that as well.
Speaker 4 (32:30):
Those are right.
Speaker 1 (32:30):
But but I mean things like you know, like I say,
a big fruit and meat kind of combo thing.
Speaker 4 (32:38):
I'm not. I'm not crazy about that it depends on
the variety. Uh.
Speaker 1 (32:42):
And I'm the same way with chocolate it mint as words,
but somebody really.
Speaker 3 (32:46):
Likes that, I'll go in twigs narrow edge for twigs.
Speaker 4 (32:50):
Yeah, yeah, that's that's a good choice.
Speaker 2 (32:52):
Uh uh.
Speaker 1 (32:54):
Somebody said frozen toblerone. Oh, that's a good one. That's
a good call a frozen toe seedpals said, hey, the
SEC road games are so tough every sport. I guess
the Vandy women found out beating Texas doesn't put you
in the championship. They really threw a lot of horns down.
Players did after the game they did. I will tell
you this, I noticed that the other and I there
are a lot of players doing then and then and
(33:15):
that happens, and that didn't.
Speaker 4 (33:17):
It doesn't matter to Texas players.
Speaker 1 (33:19):
The one player who did not when her teammates were
all around her doing it was jockling a win in Tonda,
the former long horn.
Speaker 4 (33:26):
She didn't do it.
Speaker 1 (33:27):
She celebrated with him, but she did not go horns
down like a lot of our teammates did not. What
I saw on the on the postgame stuff, okay, interesting, yeah,
there's some of that. Okay, let me let me address
something else too. Somebody said, uh, vic is seatpal said
(33:47):
Vic's a great coach was He was a bit tough
on them publicly, but they got the message, Uh, yes,
you're playing for former coaches players tradition at Tennessee and Texas.
I liked that point from coach Miller as well. But
I want to get to something else. Because somebody asked
what channel was the baseball game on you yesterday?
Speaker 4 (34:07):
And then somebody else said, where's Roger and where's Moreland?
Speaker 1 (34:10):
I couldnot find yesterday's baseball game anywhere radio television, wife,
and it had me running errands with her and could
not listen to radio broadcast. Please advise, Okay, the game
was broadcast yesterday, and it's important to remember this. We're
(34:30):
going to have some of this when we have the
crossover portion, the overlap portion between men's and women's basketball
and baseball. There are going to be some games that
are not on AM thirteen hundred the Zone. We you know,
we went through the deal earlier in talking about how
(34:52):
men's basketball is always on the Zone and at night
it's on ninety eight poin one FM cavet night games. Okay,
there's a minor exception to that rule because what we
went through yesterday with the Postponeman in delay or Saturday
(35:12):
with the baseball game and it didn't start till six thirty,
so men's basketball was only on ninety eight point one KVETT,
so that baseball could have a signal and it was
on that. Then on Sunday you've got first of all softball,
which can be heard on the Texas Long Ones app
(35:33):
and the iHeartRadio app was also on our HD two
signal ninety seven point five FM, so it is on
an FM signal for softball. Now here's the deal with
baseball and women's basketball. It depends on the start time
of each of their games when they're playing, if they overlap,
which game sometimes is starting first and or if there's
(35:56):
enough gap to do one in the other. So it
depends on if the team is at home or on
the road. That's where yesterday came in the long run.
Baseball team was at home, Texas women were on the road.
We have two signals at that point to at our
disposal thirteen under the zone obviously and then one three
(36:16):
point one FM, Austin's eighty station. We acknowledge we know
one o three point one FM is not as strong
as signal, especially in the daytime, as thirteen hundred the zone.
We know that, but sometimes when you just have the
two stations and we're only able to use ninety eight
point one FM for men's basketball on night games.
Speaker 4 (36:36):
That's just the way the contract.
Speaker 1 (36:37):
It was done when iHeart stepped in when the group
Acrosstown defaulted, so they stepped in to pick up the games.
But there were certain conditions involved in that, and one
of those was that for men's basketball it would just
be night games. That's why it's like that now for
baseball and softball, I mean baseball and women's basketball, it
(36:57):
depends on a number of factors. Again, what time the
game is starting on also home versus road.
Speaker 4 (37:05):
And here's what I mean by that.
Speaker 1 (37:08):
You know, the women were on the road playing a
ranked opponent on the road yesterday, so nobody from around
here could go to the game unless you're going to Knoxville,
Tennessee home game. Baseball, you have a season ticket base
of in the neighborhood of five thousand, a lot of
folks in the ballpark.
Speaker 4 (37:27):
Not everybody can go to the baseball game. I realized that, and.
Speaker 1 (37:30):
Then the other thing that we provide with baseball when
we do this on home games for women's and men's basketball,
is an in house radio signal, and I think a
lot of people have learned it over time. It's eighty
seven point seven FM. That's our ballpark frequency. So if
you're going to the game, you can at home. You
can listen to us in fact home or road, because
we use that for our postgame interview with Schloss down
(37:53):
on the field. So if you're in the ballpark, you
can hear us on eighty seven point seven a lot
of times on thirteen hundred. But if we have a conflict,
an overlap conflict, then just that signal or one oh
three point one FM if you're outside the area. The
(38:14):
women's game was on thirteen hundred. That isn't always the case.
It depends on the game and who's on the road
and who's in home. I would just say if you
keep those two signals in mind, thirteen hundred and one
oh three point one. It's that also very important to remember.
Every single game is broadcast on the Texas Long Ones
app and you can hear it on the iHeartRadio app.
Every one and other some of you I don't want
(38:36):
to fiddle with it with the app. I get it,
I understand, But more and more people are liking it
because it sounds really crisp and clear and all that
other kind of stuff. So there are options, and nobody's
being shut out on it, and we have tweeted out
on social media. I do it every game where what
(38:57):
stations are gonna be found on not only you're locally,
but like if you're out of the area, on Sirious XM.
If we're on that, because almost all the men's basketball
games and a lot of the women's games are on
Serious XM, and then later in the season some baseball
would be on it as well, after all the basketball
is cleared out. But that's what it is. It's a
(39:18):
bit of a moving target. It floats, It depends on
the game start time, Homer Road, if there's overallap and
things like that. But if you keep the two signals
in mind, thirteen hundred and one oh three point one,
in addition to men's games at night, that around ninety
eight point one. Like, for example, tomorrow is a perfect
example of this. Tomorrow we have a situation of baseball
(39:42):
at five o'clock against Lamar and men's basketball at eight
o'clock at Moody against LSU. Okay, if we're being real,
we know the game counting, post game and everything else
is probably going to go beyond three hours and would
and would in which would and so if it if
(40:03):
it was on the zone, it would blow past the
start of the men's game certainly would blow past all
the pregame stuff. So that's why, because it's an eight
o'clock game, you can hear the men's basketball game here
in town on ninety eight point one FM tomorrow seven
thirty pre game start time tip off tod eight, and
we'll stick with thirteen under the zone with baseball four
forty five pre game. It'll be preceded by this program
(40:27):
four forty five all the way to its conclusion, or
you'll hear the baseball game and its conclusion, and also
you'll hear the postgame coverage and things like that.
Speaker 4 (40:37):
So that's that's an example what I'm talking about.
Speaker 1 (40:40):
So, yeah, there's a bit of sharing and overlapping and
things like that, but we juggle it as best we can,
and that's that's how it is. And we'll keep everybody
posted on that. So tomorrow baseball on the Zone Men's
basketball on nine eight point one FM Thursday, women's game
at Arkansas on thirteen under the Zone, followed by Longhorn
(41:01):
Weekly with Sean Miller.
Speaker 4 (41:03):
So that'll be happening on Thursday.
Speaker 1 (41:05):
So anyway, just trying to keep you up updated on that,
and we'll continue to do it. We'll remind everybody, you know,
what days, what games are on, which signals and stuff
like like that. Somebody else on the text line said
they did they did notice that Jock Olinga went in
Tona did not throw the horns down.
Speaker 4 (41:23):
Yeah, she didn't.
Speaker 1 (41:24):
She didn't, and I think she thought it would would
be disrespectful to her former teammates and coach if she did.
Even though I'm here to tell you the players don't
think that much of it, and neither do most fans.
Speaker 4 (41:36):
They're like, eh, all right, you know, whatever you do.
Speaker 1 (41:38):
You that's that's how I There are some old school
fans that feel disrespected by it. It might be viewed
as being a traditionally disrespectful gesture, but I can tell
you there are worse gestures out there, all right, coming.
Speaker 6 (41:56):
Up with me, Yeah, would you rather see the horns
down or get a What is it a pimento cheese sandwich,
throwing out yeah there.
Speaker 4 (42:01):
That was an Arkansas. Hey, I'm going to Arkansas this week.
We'll see.
Speaker 5 (42:04):
All right.
Speaker 1 (42:05):
We'll hear from Vic Shaper coming up on thirteen under the.
Speaker 9 (42:07):
Zone again might say, Okay, now I think you're doing
it over doing it a little bit much on the
getting high up in the air.
Speaker 4 (42:20):
I get it, I get it.
Speaker 1 (42:21):
You're still you're still going after that British Airways flight
crew that unwittingly ate a bag full of pot gummies
and got all freaku they'd already landed. That happened at
the hotel. I'm still just wondering why they would it
just take except a bag of oh good little snack
(42:42):
gummy bear things.
Speaker 3 (42:43):
Is British food that bad?
Speaker 4 (42:46):
Yeah, some would say it is.
Speaker 6 (42:47):
Yeah, this was a suggestion from the text line.
Speaker 3 (42:49):
Had to had to give it a little nod there.
Speaker 4 (42:52):
Yeah, yeah, you may well.
Speaker 1 (42:54):
It was with uh, the the immortal John Denver there
with Rocky Mount. All right, let's hear from Texas Women's
head coach Vick Shaving, and we're going to hear his
one on one with Roger Wallace coming up next hour.
But here's some things that happened. From the news conference, first,
just what.
Speaker 5 (43:13):
A heck of the game, Peel. A lot of pride
for my team, love how.
Speaker 10 (43:21):
They responded today against a really good Tennessee Game Tennessee team,
I think coach is doing a great job.
Speaker 5 (43:29):
With that group.
Speaker 10 (43:30):
And every time you come here, I've been coming here now.
Came here from ninety seven to two thousand and three
with Arkansas, and I went up to Mississippi State and
I was here from twelve to twenty. Every time you
play this team, it's always like a bunch of WNBA
players out there. They're just so much size, athleticism, they're physical,
(43:52):
and I just thought our kids today were really, really tough.
I'm really proud of them. They've really responded. And again,
this league is it's very, very difficult, and I'm just
talking to CP earlier, She's like, man, it's a hard
place to play. I've been coming here thirty eight years
and I'm like, I've experienced it. And so just again
(44:17):
for my kids obviously to play like we played to
me today with the toughness that I like to see.
After our not so good night on Thursday, I'm really
really proud of my team.
Speaker 5 (44:30):
So again, it's always good to win on the road.
Speaker 10 (44:34):
We'll give God the glory for number twenty four and
get home and then we got to go back on
the road again.
Speaker 5 (44:42):
So it'll be three straight.
Speaker 1 (44:45):
Four too many, three to be exact. They have three
in a row and home it'll be three in a
row in the row.
Speaker 4 (44:52):
When they play Arkansas on Thursday.
Speaker 1 (44:53):
And he was asked about this the condensed schedule, what
with the reschedule game coming this week with Art that
was the one that had to be rescheduled due to
the winter storm that was passing through Austin and through
Arkansas back toward the end of January. So he was
asked about the challenges of handling this condensed schedule.
Speaker 10 (45:12):
Well, I think for us, we've just had so many
monsters back to back to back. I mean every game
we've played now for four or five straight is.
Speaker 5 (45:21):
Top twenty five or top ten, you know.
Speaker 10 (45:24):
And I just it's been my experience whether they're top ten,
top fifty, top one hundred. You have to approach everybody
the same. Everybody deserves equal respect. I thought our last
two days in the gym practicing.
Speaker 5 (45:42):
Were really good. I loved our leadership.
Speaker 10 (45:44):
Booker's voice, something that we really really need was very
very clear and evident in the gym beginning on Friday
and practice. Jordan is always that communicator on the floor,
especially defensively.
Speaker 5 (46:04):
And I was going to ride Rory today for forty
if I needed to.
Speaker 10 (46:07):
I felt like I needed to get her out a
little bit because I thought she got tired. But I
was prepared to ride Rory for forty today because I
just had that.
Speaker 5 (46:16):
Much confidence in her.
Speaker 10 (46:17):
So, you know, this time of year, it is the
grind and you have to embrace it.
Speaker 5 (46:22):
You know.
Speaker 10 (46:23):
We have a shirt that says you got to get
past hard, and you know, I think that's the thing
that's really hard for coaches's teaching kids how to get
past hard. You know, quite frankly, I've got to do
a better job. I got to get this team to
play better. Like this team's really good and I'm just
(46:45):
not They're not. To me, they're not playing as good
as they can now. We had seventeen turnovers today and
they know that's way too many.
Speaker 5 (46:51):
And obviously I'm not throwing the ball.
Speaker 10 (46:52):
But I just feel like I've got to get them
playing better because when we're humming, when we're playing good, and.
Speaker 5 (47:00):
They are hard to handle.
Speaker 10 (47:02):
So but I thought our defense today was way better
than the other day. But it started with Friday and
Saturday and how intentional these kids were in our practice.
Rory communicate and Rory, We'll play as hard as Rory.
Harmon plays defensively, and you know she takes charges, she.
Speaker 5 (47:21):
Seals so well. Of course that defensive stop.
Speaker 10 (47:23):
At the end of the game with Breed, I mean,
that's if I've got to end the game, if we've
got to have a stop or a score, I'd much
rather get to stop. That's just where I'm comfortable. So again,
pride to this group, proud of my team.
Speaker 5 (47:36):
Is a guards game today and these guards were really special.
Speaker 1 (47:40):
All right, coming up, I want you to there's another
piece of sign I want you to hear from Big Shaffer,
and we're going to juxtapose that to a piece of
sound that cost another head coach's job. We'll get to
that coming up here on sports Radio AM thirteen under
the zone of the iHeartRadio.
Speaker 4 (47:58):
APPI and.
Speaker 1 (48:09):
See what happens when you dare the producer somebody on
the text line that said, I said, maybe it was
doing overdoing it a little bit there, Rocky Mountain High
and on the text line I said Rocky Mountain Way
would be overdoing it, and talking about the British Airways
flight crew that consumed a bag of marijuana gummies thinking
(48:32):
they were gummy bears, and somebody said Rocky Mountain Way
would be overdoing it.
Speaker 4 (48:38):
Jay, Herman begs are different.
Speaker 3 (48:40):
You know, they may have touched down in London, but
those flighting.
Speaker 4 (48:43):
Touch down in La, well London, in la wherever.
Speaker 6 (48:47):
The plane touchdown, the crew haven't touched down for quite
some time.
Speaker 4 (48:50):
They went through it.
Speaker 1 (48:51):
Yeah, yeah, So there we are here on a Monday,
on thirteen hundred zer Okay, I want to go back
to Vic Shaeffer because he was asked it was kind
of a comparison contrast of you know, the hard teachings
and the Randy was on the other night. And in
(49:12):
case you didn't hear it, Kim Caldwell, the Tennessee coach,
had said very similar things about her team lacking the heart.
Speaker 4 (49:19):
And hustle and grit and all that other kind of stuff.
Speaker 1 (49:22):
So he was asked about the team and how did
they respawn going to the practice floor and what they
did from there.
Speaker 10 (49:31):
I thought practice Friday was really good and Saturday was
really good. But it was there was a lot of players.
Like I said, it started with book her communicating. I
thought her voice was very clear and evident in practice
on Friday, you know, and.
Speaker 5 (49:50):
Again it's you know this this team has a ton
of heart. I want to make sure y'all know that.
Speaker 10 (49:55):
We just didn't play with any on Thursday in my opinion,
but from a team perspective overall this season, and they
got a ton that you saw it today. They played
with a ton of heart today. A lot of passion
and motion out there. Our huddles were tight, Our communication
in the huddles, over on the sideline and timeouts was good.
(50:16):
I thought they were poised. You know, Tennessee made two
runs today. We got up twelve in the first half.
They made a run to tie, We got up ten.
Late in the fourth quarter. They made a run to
cut it. But they responded. They could have easily wilted.
Booker steps in the line, makes two big free throws
to get it back to three. Jordan just fouts makes one.
Speaker 5 (50:35):
Attitude to get it back to two.
Speaker 10 (50:37):
So you know, it was their ability to be able
to do that again, I think speaks to who they
are in their toughness, you know, And that's the thing
that I just try to impart on these kids. I
love them to death. They are my world.
Speaker 5 (50:54):
You know.
Speaker 10 (50:55):
I don't get any satisfaction out of, you know, having
those real conversations. But so much of what I do
comes with parental instincts.
Speaker 5 (51:06):
You know.
Speaker 10 (51:06):
Every decision I make for these kids comes with parental instincts,
and it just you know, I've told them, you know,
We've had some you know, this isn't the first time
that I've challenged a team.
Speaker 5 (51:19):
I've had a team at Mississippi State.
Speaker 10 (51:21):
I challenged about this time of year after we had
a stinker at home against Kentucky, and they went on
a run and made it to the Final four and
played for the national championship.
Speaker 5 (51:30):
So again, I'm too.
Speaker 10 (51:32):
Far down the road to change and holding kids accountable,
myself accountable.
Speaker 5 (51:39):
I owe it to them to do that. And you know,
at the end of the day, I.
Speaker 10 (51:47):
Don't think anybody out there wants to walk in Coach
Caldwells or my shoes at two of the most tradition
rich women's basketball programs in the history of game, in
my opinion, Texas Tennessee and Stanford. Those people didn't show
(52:08):
up in the nineties. Those schools have been here since
day one. So when I take over at Texas and
coach takes over here, we're here not to be good.
Good will get you fired. And so for us trying
to get our kids to be great because that's what's
(52:31):
required at our.
Speaker 5 (52:32):
Schools and that's what we signed up for. We didn't
This isn't a nice life job.
Speaker 10 (52:40):
Want a nice life job, Go to some three named
directional school where they don't care. You don't go to
Tennessee or Texas to retire. But we know what we
signed up for. But before you go criticizing coaches who
sacrifice time with family with children, she's got a new born.
(53:02):
Before you go criticizing them on social media, you come
walk in their shoes.
Speaker 5 (53:08):
And that's our job.
Speaker 10 (53:11):
To get it to these kids, to let them know
because again I've been I basically had my legs cut
out from under me on so many things of today's
world in how college athletics is. But I will not
give in to teaching these kids accountability, responsibility. That's my
job that comes with the territory of being the head
(53:35):
coach at Texas Tennessee, and you know what should be anywhere,
but a lot of people won't do it because they're
worried about their paycheck.
Speaker 5 (53:42):
But that's my job.
Speaker 10 (53:44):
I care enough about these kids that I want them
to learn that when they leave me, they go out
in the real world, they understand, Hey, it can't show
up for work and give that effort at my job
because I might get fired.
Speaker 5 (54:01):
And I think my kids understand that. I hope they do.
Speaker 10 (54:04):
I hope they know how much I love them and
I care about them, and I care about them enough
that we can.
Speaker 5 (54:09):
Have these real conversations.
Speaker 10 (54:11):
But I can assure you, other than their parents, nobody
loves them more than I do, and nobody cares for
him more than I do. Sometimes you used to have
to have those real conversations. But hey, you're going to
ask them. Does the film lie?
Speaker 5 (54:27):
The film don't lie?
Speaker 1 (54:29):
So And this was obviously the follow up to what
happened on Thursday when he really kind of laid into
them for having a lack of heart. And Kim call
will do a similar thing. And there's been a lot
of criticism of coaches getting too much. I want you
to hear something. This is Jerome Tang, who until last
night was they head coach of Kansas State. This was
after they had gotten blown out by Cincinnati, and they're
(54:53):
in a bad way right now.
Speaker 4 (54:54):
They're having a losing season.
Speaker 1 (54:56):
That's one major difference, the biggest difference from Kansas State
and two women's programs. Have talked about Texas and Tennessee.
But you can hear the frustration in the coach's voice.
Speaker 4 (55:05):
This was embarrassing.
Speaker 11 (55:07):
These dudes do not deserve to wear this uniform. There
will be very few of them in it next year. Like,
I'm embarrassed for the university. I'm embarrassed for our fans,
our students section. You know it is. It is just ridiculous.
We got practice at six am tomorrow morning, and uh
(55:32):
uh and and we will. We will get this thing,
right I I I have no answer and no words.
Speaker 5 (55:41):
So you got you got two questions.
Speaker 11 (55:42):
So whoever one asks two questions, I will answer them
to the best of my ability right now.
Speaker 5 (55:46):
But right now, like I'm like pissed.
Speaker 1 (55:49):
Yeah, okay, so and by the way, one of the
questions was about the students and fans who showed up
with bags on their heads. He said, I don't blame them,
I will do it too, Yeah, because of the way
this is played, all right. So he was in his
fourth season. He lashed out of the players after that
blowout home loss to Cincinnati on Wednesday. Now he was
(56:11):
fired last night. And they've been massively struggling this season.
They're ten and fifteen, tied for last place in the
Big Twelve, and they have only one and eleven in
conference play.
Speaker 4 (56:29):
Now.
Speaker 1 (56:29):
When Jerome Tang arrived, he was Scott Drew's number one
assistant Baylor. When he arrived, one of the things he
did was to turn around the program there and took
over for Bruce Weber and had him in the Elite
eight his first year, and they won twenty six games.
But they've been struggling after that. So you heard that rant,
(56:54):
and they fired him. Now here's the rub they fired
him for.
Speaker 4 (57:02):
For that rant.
Speaker 1 (57:04):
The athletic director Jane Taylor said, this was the decision
that was made the best interest of our university and
men's basketball program. Recent public comments and conduct, in addition
to the program's overall direction, have not aligned with k
State standards for supporting student athletes and representing the university.
Eighteen million, six hundred and seventy thousand dollars were left
(57:24):
on the deal. But if it's true, it can be
held up that they fired him for costs. They don't
have to pay the money. So you can see where
this is headed.
Speaker 3 (57:34):
And Dundund.
Speaker 1 (57:37):
Well, he says he's going to fight it, and yeah,
it's going to wind up in court. I'm sure we'll
be back to wrap up hour number two. I'm thirteen
under the zone from Missouria in Columbia, Missouri. It's the
Texas Longhorns against the Missouri Tigers.
Speaker 4 (57:56):
Texas with a down five twelve seven.
Speaker 1 (57:58):
Here's Wilshair into the front court from right to left,
sets up his own three pointer and knocks it down
out of the Swain in the front pard. Here's Damon
sends the past to the cutting Tremont Market Is shop block.
Nick Cody pumps puffs again and gets the bucketed one.
Nick Cody two excellent bullfakes got trimp Piers to commit
(58:19):
the foul. Seven seconds left in the half. Mark calls
for high screen, Cody supplies it. Mark driving around, Barrett
puts it off the glass and it's good and he's fouled.
With one point nine to go in the half. Great
move to the bucket by Tremont, Mark Bull of hesitation
in the air, got the bucket and one here's Daylan's
works it to the left side on the ribble. Five
(58:41):
to shoot. Swain trying to drive up. Piers puts it
up off the glass. He rattles it in down the
corn to shoot. Tramark Tramat drive it. He's got a
shoot he does and eighteen butter god and he's fouled.
I think he had a foot on the three point line.
I don't think it's a three. But he gets the
bucket and one six to shoot. If Focatitas puts them
(59:01):
on the floor, drives it, spins, shoots and rattles it home.
Foca Titas, with sixteen Texas fucks in their largest lead.
It's fifty seven forty seven with ten ten of goals,
saying on the shot like bounce pass Mark off the
scree turn around, jumper.
Speaker 2 (59:17):
In the lane is good, big time flash in the
lane turned jumper.
Speaker 1 (59:21):
Trema dribbles on the right side, Mark picks it up
out the Swain Dalen step it back. Three to shoot,
you fire up a three god Dalon. Swain buries the
three eleven and a half eighteen. In the ball game,
Texas it's largest lead up twelve sixty seven.
Speaker 4 (59:38):
Fifty five five.
Speaker 1 (59:40):
On the shot Fox Swain drive it to the right
side Dylan's We're gonna have the launcher contested three.
Speaker 4 (59:45):
Good a dagger in the heart.
Speaker 1 (59:48):
From Swain, who has twenty three points sixteen. In the
second half, Laggards have their largest lead up fourteen and
eighty sixty six, and the Lawhorns win this one, a
huge road wind for Texas, a big time Quad one
victory as the log Warts defeat the Missouri Tigers here
(01:00:09):
in Columbia. The final score Todocket the Texas log Warts
eighty five, the Missouri Tigers sixty eight.
Speaker 2 (01:00:15):
It is back to the volunteer State for the Texas women,
this time to take on the volunteers. Booker has it
left wing. She gets it to Lee on the nice
cut and she lays it in scramble for it and
Sidbury takes it away, gets it to Harmon tayas Sidbury Harmon.
Speaker 3 (01:00:31):
To Sidbury running the floor and.
Speaker 2 (01:00:33):
She knocks in the lay Booker looking for Cunningham. They
sag off. Madison can't get the pass down there and
now She drives the faceline, goes under the basket, lays
it up on the other side and makes it. Reverses
it back to Harmon, into the paint, pull up jumper.
Speaker 3 (01:00:45):
Rory got it.
Speaker 2 (01:00:48):
Nine for Harmon, Texas back to a five point lead.
Carlton with it, Justice spins drives.
Speaker 1 (01:00:55):
Carlton shot up and go it off glass.
Speaker 2 (01:00:57):
In the corner. Booker gets into the paint, dropped it down.
Speaker 3 (01:01:00):
Shot is good.
Speaker 2 (01:01:02):
Carlton from Blookert Madison driving gets deep, goes up shot
Blake lays it in off glass. Here we go Cooper
to inbound it, gets it inbound. Spearman has it back
to Cooper. Cooper has it tipped away. Prey Preston comes
up with the steal.
Speaker 3 (01:01:16):
That's the ball game. That's the ballgame.
Speaker 2 (01:01:19):
Priama Preston comes up with the defensive play of the game.
On Taalaysia, Cooper and the Longhorns come to Knoxville and
win it sixty five to sixty three.
Speaker 4 (01:01:31):
Very busy, active weekend.
Speaker 1 (01:01:34):
For both men's and women's basketball, as well as for
softball and baseball. And we continued hereon the Monday afternoon
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone Craig Way alongside
Jay Herman, the producer there put together.
Speaker 4 (01:01:50):
That highlight montage.
Speaker 1 (01:01:52):
Somebody on their text line had asked, they said, where's Roger?
Where's more Roger was on that highlight there he went
with the women. So he wasn't on any of the
baseball games. He did the Sunday gear and Keith is
the analyst sometimes did his comment will come in, but
it's largely a play by plate montage of us. But
(01:02:12):
you did hear a little bit of Eddie Orrin in there.
He came in. It's a big shot there at that time.
Speaker 6 (01:02:17):
So any any of his signature five chuckle he did,
he had He had only a three for what folks
who don't know about.
Speaker 1 (01:02:26):
That's where he goes to m you know sometimes most
of the times when things are not going well. But
he hadn't one that was going well in the second
EO did that if it's bad usually is when he
will give you the five count.
Speaker 4 (01:02:39):
Mmmmmmmmm.
Speaker 6 (01:02:41):
That was Sean Miller's internal monologue after some of those
foul calls.
Speaker 1 (01:02:44):
There were three times, three times fortune was three different guys.
Now on the one end, you say, is that fortunate?
Three different guys and only only well, it's not one
guy repeating the same mistake over and over, fouling a
guy shooting a three pointer and fortunately one of them
became four point plays because in two of the cases
the shot was missed, but in one the shot went
(01:03:06):
in and then the guy missed the free throw, but
they still gave up three points every time. I think
it was it was the times it was free throws.
All three were made on both occasions, and then of
course the three point shot that went down, and yet
the Longhorns learned from it overcame it. I've heard Sark
say this a lot after practice when he talks a team.
(01:03:27):
He'll see, we understand you're going to make some mistakes.
They happen, Mistakes do happen. You guys will make some mistakes.
What we want is for you to learn from so you.
Speaker 4 (01:03:36):
Don't repeat them.
Speaker 1 (01:03:37):
She don't have them over and over again. And that's
what Sean Miller has been going through in you know,
trying to you know, in trying to teach the game
and get guys comfortable. And again it's the first season
for him as head coach, so you go through some
(01:04:00):
of that. Off of that on the text line, as
we always say, we give you the opportunity if you
want to Texas text the program a text the word
Texas followed by your question or comment to eight one
to five three zero. Our man Carrie, in responding to
that one text about that, said, that's that's pretty picky
(01:04:21):
about play callers for UT games.
Speaker 4 (01:04:22):
He said, I liked Cam. I thought he did a
good job.
Speaker 1 (01:04:25):
Horn's up to him, said Carrie, Yeah, I think I
think the other texts just wanted to know where everybody
was and how we were assigned to the deal that
worked best for Roger's schedule to do the two women's
road games in the state of Tennessee over the weekend.
Of course, I had the Saturday night game in Columbia
sandwiched him between the baseball season opening on Friday night
(01:04:47):
and yesterday's game. Cameron's stepping in on Friday and Sunday
for Andrew Haynes, our regular softball play by playboye who
was attending his father a grand ninetieth birthday party. Really
cool deal out there in California. And Jake Herman stood
ready at the helm, and you heard Jake in that
(01:05:08):
sftball Baseball Saltball montage last last hour. You heard one
highlight from Jake because he got one inning there in
each of those two games. And you were supposed to
do two games Saturday, but the rain would not allow that.
Speaker 3 (01:05:19):
The rain got in the way, and it was it
was tough. It was tough.
Speaker 6 (01:05:24):
But you know, I did the prep. I know a
lot more about Texas Saltball than I did a couple
of days ago. I'm ready to go if another opportunity
were to come up.
Speaker 1 (01:05:33):
Well, that's good, okay, Carrie said, one burger forever. We
put the question out there about if you could only
have one hamburger to any time. You don't have to
eat a hamburger every day and you're only and it's
not that you only get one hamburger total for the
rest of your life.
Speaker 4 (01:05:53):
It's just that the question came down if you could.
Speaker 1 (01:05:56):
Only have one hamburger from a chain, a chain, not
like you know, like like I said, a friend Lisa
Kaufin had that the Great talked about that Bison smash burger.
It sounds wonderful, But the ut Golf Club is a
one of a kind place that's not chain obviously. But
you know, maybe after a round go to the nineteenth hole.
(01:06:18):
Going there and have a cold beverage and then have
that burger sounds like a great idea out of the
ut Golf Club out in stein Of Ranch. But I
was talking about, you know, for for a chain, and
so you know McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, whatever, And here's
a guy who kind of technically fall within the rules,
Carrie said. If I had one burger for it would
(01:06:41):
be Dan's has been here for over forty years. I
have one before heading to the dish every game. Good
calls good. Dan's is good. And so it's a local chain.
It's a chain, but it's a local one. So Hilbert's
used to be three, and I think they've just got
the one. But like I said, I enjoy going to
the one over on Cameron Road. And by the way,
if you really want an old throwback experience and you're
(01:07:02):
wanting waterburger, there's the old style A frame waterburger over
there at Cameron Road, right near to ninety over there.
It's one of those real old style of the old
a frame waterburgers that originally came up when the franchise
opened in nineteen fifty. So, yeah, if you could only
have one specific burger anytime you had a burger for.
Speaker 4 (01:07:26):
The rest of your days, what would it be.
Speaker 1 (01:07:30):
And if you could only have one candy bar for
the rest of your days, anytime you were gonna have
a candy bar, that's the only one you could have.
Speaker 4 (01:07:41):
And I opted for Snickers.
Speaker 1 (01:07:43):
And the reason why I did that, like I said
it kind of is the amalgam. You have the chocolate
and the peanuts and the caramel and the nugat. Course
that wouldn't help Jake because of the peanut allergy, so
he can't go that route.
Speaker 4 (01:07:55):
But you, but you had a good you had a
good call on your own on what you would do.
Speaker 3 (01:07:58):
I'd probably go Twigs, which.
Speaker 1 (01:08:00):
Is good like twigs, like the Hershey Special dart too.
Speaker 4 (01:08:04):
That's right there for me. Part of the reason is
that I did that.
Speaker 1 (01:08:10):
I went with Stinkers. Is this people who's listened to
this program have heard me talk about. You know how
I largely put myself through college working concerts, selling T
shirts and other merch for either of the band, like
I did when I was on tour with Journey in
the summer of eighty three, the Frontiers tour, or if
(01:08:31):
I worked for the arena, and I worked for three
four really in specific over the course of about five
years when I was finishing up college before and after
and everything, and it was reunion ering in Dallas because
I lived in the Metroplex at the time. What was
the Summit in Houston? It's now the Joel Ostein church there.
(01:08:53):
What's the name of the church something? I can't remember
the name of it anyway, what was the summit?
Speaker 5 (01:08:59):
You know?
Speaker 1 (01:09:00):
Fifteen thous or sixteen thousand seed arena? He got converted.
I guess the Rockets sold.
Speaker 4 (01:09:06):
It to him.
Speaker 1 (01:09:07):
What's it called Lakewood? That's it in the Lakewood Church. Okay,
so that's a church now where the Houston Rockets won
two world titles. It's now a church. I worked a
lot of concerts in that bill. I'll never forget working
ac DC in there. And a guy tried to steal
from under the table and grab on, and I went,
I put one foot on the table, jumped over and
(01:09:29):
landed on his back, and the shirts went. I went
if I was say, you don't steal from me, man, It
was all pumped up with a with a drenne. And
the guy stood up and he was about six four
six y five two hundred and some pounds, and I'm
looking at him something.
Speaker 4 (01:09:40):
We went, oh boy, what have I done?
Speaker 1 (01:09:42):
And then right at that moment, my brother happened to
be working that trip with me, and he's a pretty
good sized guy. He jumped over the table and said
another guy, and so there were three of us and
then he guy.
Speaker 4 (01:09:50):
Looked at you, So I wouldn't judge do anything, and
he went off.
Speaker 1 (01:09:53):
So, because if somebody steals from you, it comes out
of your money. It's all like consignment. So that was
working in Houston. I think about that, but I worked
three bill I worked also what was called the Myriad
at Oklahoma City is now I think the Cox Convention
Center right across the street from the Paycom Center where
(01:10:14):
the Thunder work. And also the Lloyd Noble Center in
normth By the way, did you see what happened to
the Lloyd Noble Center of the weekend? Remember we talked
about when I went up there for the basketball game
and was kind of I said, the place is kind
of you know, it's kind of dog geared now and
a little bit of a fire trap. Yeah, they had
a fire during the Georgia Oklahoma game. The popcorn machine
on the concourse level caught fires, flames shot had to
(01:10:36):
stop the game for a few minutes. They had under
control quickly and out pretty quickly, but there was smoke
in the building and they had to clear that out.
But anyway, the point that I was making is the
other job. One of the other jobs I had was
one summer, the summer of nineteen eighty, when they had
fifty two consecutive days of over one hundred degrees.
Speaker 4 (01:10:55):
I'll never forget that.
Speaker 1 (01:10:56):
I worked in a liquor store Centennial and so it'd
be like one of the Spags or Twin Liquors or anything
like that. And you know, and I was mainly a
cashier and stocking and all that other kind of stuff.
But it was really really hot that summer, and when
we would get a break, you go back, maybe you
could get a snack and something to drink. Well, you're
(01:11:18):
limited on your choices of what you can drink in
a liquor store, you know, during business hours. It has
to be like of the mixer arrived some but I
would get like a Snickers bar and an orange juice,
and I got really attached to that over the course
of the summer, a Snickers bar and orange juice for the.
Speaker 3 (01:11:35):
Summer snack of champions.
Speaker 6 (01:11:36):
Yeah, it's like my cheese curds at the ballpark and
wallsaw before I realized what they were doing to my stomach.
Speaker 4 (01:11:41):
Yeah, well, there you go. There's a lot of.
Speaker 6 (01:11:45):
Mixers to uh well, I mean you probably didn't have
that many mixers to choose from.
Speaker 4 (01:11:49):
No, I mean soft drinks, you know.
Speaker 1 (01:11:52):
I mean they would selloys by the can and the
thing or or you know, other mixers, non alcoholic mixers.
Speaker 3 (01:11:59):
Sure, I was tempting.
Speaker 1 (01:12:00):
Yeah, but you know, when you're working, you're working, you
didn't think about it too much. It would be like
it was like one hundred and five outside, and because
people were going in and out of the store so much,
the store temperature was about eighty five because the door
was always open. So you go back in the beer
box when somebody wanted a case of Budweiser or Bud
(01:12:20):
Lights or Cores or Coors Light or whatever. And you
go back to get a case and somebody say, hey,
we need a case. There'd be like three or four
of us because I got it. Because you go back
in the beer box and it's forty degrees in there,
so I'd stand in there for a couple of minutes
and then bring out the.
Speaker 4 (01:12:33):
Case of beer.
Speaker 3 (01:12:33):
Oh just browsing.
Speaker 4 (01:12:35):
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Speaker 6 (01:12:36):
Ike on the YouTube comment says, for his burger, double meat,
what a burger with hallapenos.
Speaker 3 (01:12:41):
I don't watch the MC call it.
Speaker 1 (01:12:42):
Oh, the watch MC call it candy bar. I don't
even think it's around anymore. I haven't seen any I
think we had one of those lists of candy bars
in it along, and maybe it still is.
Speaker 4 (01:12:52):
It's good. I like that as well.
Speaker 1 (01:12:55):
Somebody else says yes to Hilbert's on Cameron because I
mentioned the Maldonato family and the great burgers there and
the one hundred thousand dollars bar as they call it
these days, one hundred grand, one hundred grand bar. No, No,
it's it's chocolate caramel crisp rice.
Speaker 3 (01:13:15):
Oh okay, it sounds a little like a Charleston Chew.
Speaker 1 (01:13:19):
Yeah, but the Charleston Chew didn't have the crisp rice on, right,
that's just the chocolate and the caramel.
Speaker 3 (01:13:23):
I think I like that.
Speaker 4 (01:13:24):
Yeah, yeah, I think you'd be all right with that.
I think you'd kind of like that.
Speaker 1 (01:13:27):
The Peter Paul Candy Company had a bar like that
for years called the Caravel. That's the same group that
did Almondjoy of Mounds. They have one called the Caravel.
That was the Chocolate and it had the crisp rice
like you would have from Anesley crunch bar or a crackle.
Speaker 4 (01:13:42):
I would have that with the caramel on it. It's
pretty cool.
Speaker 1 (01:13:45):
It was. It was good. Carrie likes the Baby Ruth.
Kind of hard to go wrong with that. The Baby
Ruth as well. All right, up next and you can
continue to put in your submissions on that. If you
have one. It's got to be a burger, a chain, Donald's,
Burger King, Wendy's. Well, accept Dan's because that's a chain.
(01:14:07):
Hilbert used to be a chain. They have the one,
but it's it's it's great as well.
Speaker 6 (01:14:12):
Where are you on Culver's Craig, I like culvers, They're okay,
that's my answer, but only in the Midwest.
Speaker 1 (01:14:18):
Yeah, I'm more interested in Culvers for the ice cream.
Speaker 4 (01:14:22):
I like the burger.
Speaker 3 (01:14:23):
Do they call it the concrete mixer?
Speaker 5 (01:14:25):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (01:14:25):
Those are good. Concretes are good. The Sundays are good.
Turtle Sunday they do is really good. There, so yeah, yeah,
I like them as well. So if you have something
you want to weigh in with that, you can either
the candy bar or the burger or both. Up next,
we'll hear from Sean Miller when we continue on Sports
(01:14:45):
Radio AM thirteen under the Zone in the iHeartRadio app
action from yesterday's King we have we have a talkback
submission from somebody. They're talking about women's basketball.
Speaker 4 (01:14:58):
Let's hear that.
Speaker 3 (01:14:58):
Yeah we do. Here comes.
Speaker 10 (01:15:05):
Hey, Craig, do you see that quote by Rory But
she and when she and Booker were invincible.
Speaker 8 (01:15:11):
I think that's part of the mindset that led him
to lose against Vanderbilt.
Speaker 1 (01:15:17):
Just to make sure the quote was and I saw
it at the time. She said, when we are playing
at our best, we can be invincible. They clearly weren't
playing at their best on Thursday, and that message was
sent loud clear. But they both played very well yesterday
in the game. There was a big, big part of
(01:15:38):
the Longhorns win. But I hear what you're saying there,
and you know, it reminds me of the old line
that Rick Barnes used to use about his team when
they look really, really good. One day and then terrible
the next day, next game. He would say, proud peacock
one day, feather duster the next. So it could have
(01:15:59):
been a bit of a humbling lesson for them, but
they went back to work. It was one of the
things that Vic Shaffer talked about. It was kind of
led by Madison Booker. The off day practices on Friday
and Saturday. The players on their own had a voluntary
shoot around on Saturday night, went over to the arena
(01:16:19):
by themselves and did it, and then they had a
team shoot around with the coaches there on Sunday, and
I went out and beat Tennessee. After the game, Roger Wallace,
who called it for us, had a chance to visit
with Vic Schaeffer, and obviously about how the game went,
but also about how the sequencing of events, with the
tumultuous way that things went with the loss to Vanderbilt
(01:16:43):
and the postgame press conference ran, and then the the interregnum,
the work that happened on the floor on Friday and Saturday,
then go out and playing on Sunday.
Speaker 5 (01:16:54):
Yeah, I'm just really proud of our kids. I mean,
they were tough today.
Speaker 10 (01:16:58):
Great environment today here Tennessee, hard place, to play hard,
place to win. You know, they made two runs at us,
We made two runs at them, and have the game
end the way it did on the defensive end, having
a great stop. I mean, that's that's toughness. I was
proud of our kids. They were Texas tough today.
Speaker 2 (01:17:17):
They answered, what what you were giving out on Thursday night?
Speaker 10 (01:17:20):
I said, well, you know, Friday's practice and Saturdays was
pretty intentional. Booker was really good, really vocal, especially Friday,
and you know, Jordan's always that voice defensively on the floor,
and of course.
Speaker 5 (01:17:36):
Rory as well.
Speaker 10 (01:17:37):
So you know, I don't I don't think any of us,
including myself, like you know, maybe some of the things
that that we felt, but at the end of the day,
you got to fix it, got to be accountable, and
you got to fix it. And so I thought they
(01:17:58):
came out today now and and play, especially on the
defensive end. We forced twenty two turnovers, seven of them
in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 2 (01:18:05):
You've got some old school tendencies in a new school
way with college athletes.
Speaker 5 (01:18:10):
Do you wonder how they're going to respond? Sometimes?
Speaker 10 (01:18:13):
For sure, I don't think anybody knows how kids today
are going to respond. They got so many people in
their ears, so many people telling them different things, and again,
my responsibility as a coach is to be real with them.
And again, every decision I make in the program at
(01:18:35):
the University of Texas comes with parental instincts. Nobody cares
about these kids and loves them other than their parents,
more than I do.
Speaker 5 (01:18:43):
And I love them enough to be honest with them.
Speaker 10 (01:18:46):
I love them enough to hold them accountable and teach
them the ways of the world. Because you show up
with your job and perform like we did Thursday night,
you might get fired. And so I think that that's
the thing that I'm too far down the road to
change about. And again I think parents though entrust me
(01:19:08):
with their daughters to do that, and so you know, hey,
I wear the responsibility of it all. If we don't
play well, there's nobody that feels worse than I do.
So I wear that responsibility. And you know, I still
don't think we're playing that well. I think we can
play a way better, and it's my job to get
(01:19:30):
us to play better. I got to figure it out
because I think this team can really really be good,
but we've got to get better.
Speaker 1 (01:19:38):
I agree with him on pretty much everything on this.
I've seen how he works, I've seen how his staff works,
and I've seen that as players work as well, and.
Speaker 4 (01:19:49):
You know he's he's very.
Speaker 1 (01:19:51):
Close to them, but that does not put them above
his own criticism if they're not playing the way that
he feels they should be playing. And that's why there
was the harsh critique the other night, and I know
what shocked a lot of people with what he was
saying about it, But he's never what you see and
hear from Vick Schaeffer is Israel is that there's no
(01:20:15):
not put on a show or anything like that. I
noticed on social media somebody that there were two or
three people that went after him, and looking at there
were fans of other schools.
Speaker 4 (01:20:25):
I get it.
Speaker 1 (01:20:26):
So it's easier, certainly to fire away if you're a
fan of in the case of one one fan from
South Carolina who said she didn't understand what he meant
by three directional school that's like saying what used to
be called Southwest Texas State. That's three words in a
(01:20:47):
direction in there. So that's what he means by that.
By the schools that they might play Southeastern Louisiana. You
know that schools that they might play a non conference play.
That's that's when he met where the programs matter to
the coaches, but not as much to the institution and
(01:21:07):
the fan base and the and the tradition that goes on,
the tradition that was established by Jody Conrad and in
Texas at the time. And he feels that his responsibility
to uphold that tradition and to carry it forward. They
went to their first Final four last year since two
thousand and three when Jody was coaching, and he feels
that responsibility to get them there. And if the players
(01:21:29):
that he recruits and works very hard and very close
with don't align with that, or if they get they
they you know, go off the path, he is going
to hold them accountable on that, even if it brings
him some criticism on that. I'm worried about that. He's
got to He's got to do what he's got to do,
you know. And and as we've often said, social media
(01:21:50):
is going to amplify everything good and bad. It just
does just part of it. If Charlie Strong is remembered
for nothing else at his time at the University of
tax he'll be remembered for the words social media will
be the downfall of society. A lot of people still
still refer to that Charlie's quote, social media will be
(01:22:12):
the downfall of society, but it's all magnified, and they
all understand that. His point about all of this was,
it doesn't matter whether things like that are magnified through
social media. It doesn't matter what the other folks outside
of the program are thinking. That what matters is is
(01:22:33):
that his players care enough to give all their best effort.
We've heard Sean Miller talk about the same thing. He
wants him given the proper effort and not being taken
lazy steps. That's why he was doing the thing about
we will file the living bleep out of you.
Speaker 3 (01:22:49):
They've got a virus.
Speaker 1 (01:22:50):
A virus you know that's called, you know, coaching your
players hard and all that sort of stuff. But if
you can also see him with the team away from this,
away from that, I can tell you right now the
itinerary came in for the Arkansas trip. I haven't looked
(01:23:11):
at it yet, but I can almost tell you exactly
what it's gonna say on it. On Wednesday, the team
will leave, it'll be late afternoon. They'll fly in to Fayetteville.
There will be a team dinner. We'll all go to
dinner at a restaurant at a place that is set
up and a chance for them to you know, get
(01:23:31):
out of just the regular routine of eating in a
meal room, a banquet room, you know that's a meeting room,
that sort of thing.
Speaker 4 (01:23:37):
They'll go to dinner together.
Speaker 1 (01:23:39):
Then they'll go to the arena and have a light
shoot just to get used to the rims and just
see that.
Speaker 4 (01:23:46):
They won't run through much.
Speaker 1 (01:23:47):
It won't do an awful lot, probably about forty five
minutes maybe, but mainly just getting up shots. A lot
of times when I post on social media, that's what
I'll post, getting up some shots night before a game.
So they'll go to Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville and
they'll get some shots up and do that. When that's over,
he will have the bus driver take them all to
a place that has ice cream and they'll all have
(01:24:08):
ice cream together, and then it'll be to back to
the hotel and then there'll be a quick film session.
We'll look at some stuff and then it's lights out
and they'll get up the next morning and they'll have breakfast.
Speaker 3 (01:24:21):
All at that same table.
Speaker 4 (01:24:23):
Yes, yeah, yeah, the players.
Speaker 1 (01:24:25):
And I haven't seen this when any other team I've
worked with, men's or women's, no matter the sport through
the years, all of the players, because normally in the
meeting rooms you have like six or seven round tables,
you know, in the meeting room that'll seat seven or
eight or nine or whatever play and some players will
(01:24:45):
sit at some managers will sit at one, and coaches
will sit at one and all that kind of stuff.
With this Texas women's team, all the players are travel
and there's like whatever twelve they travel with them or whatever.
They specifically have it set up this way, one long
table where all twelve of them sit together, and that
that was a player suggestion, and so they all sit together.
(01:25:08):
They'll have breakfast in the morning, and then there'll be some
film study of that, and then they'll go to the
arena and they'll have their regular day of game shoot
arounds about an hour and fifteen minutes where they walk
through what to expect that night from the opponent and
they'll get used to shooting. They'll come back to the
hotel and they'll have a couple hours for study haul
(01:25:30):
in the rooms that they're working on things academically or
just resting, and then they'll have a pregame meal about
four hours before tip.
Speaker 4 (01:25:37):
They'll do that and then a little more.
Speaker 1 (01:25:40):
Rest time, study time, and then they'll get ready to go.
They'll go to the arena, they'll play the game. The
game's over, they'll have the meals that were done in
advance ordered that they all individually ordered from a place,
and they'll get their meal and they'll get on the
bus and they'll go to the plane and they'll come home.
That's how it is. And so he and his coaching staff,
(01:26:03):
they care. But if they don't play to the standard,
he's going to call them out for That is just
that's how he's built. That's why he said I'm too
far down the road. He's not going to change in
that respect. All Right, we'll be back to wrap up
today's edition the program on thirteen under the Zone
