producer Jay Herman, who is here alongside.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
How you doing this morning?
Speaker 1 (01:21):
This afternoon, I said, as I still transition, by the way,
I you know, got back from Florida and I'll give
you the travelog story here in a few minutes. But
it got back from Florida with the women's basketball team
about one o'clock this morning, got back into my house
around two this morning, so I'm still shaking out cobwebs
before you go back out for the airport and get
(01:42):
on the plane with the men to go up to Norman.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
Well for US American tennis fans were all, you know,
groggy and coffee field as well.
Speaker 4 (01:50):
By the way, thank you for the coffee. Earlier the.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
Australian Open went all night long. You couldn't look away,
so I think, how did you? A lot of sleep
schedules are are thrown off. I stayed up for as
much as I could on the first match, went to
sleep a little bit after two, got up and caught
the end of the second match, which thank goodness I
(02:14):
woke up when I did, because that was that was terrific.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
What time was that?
Speaker 4 (02:18):
That was at about seven to.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
Forty five set forty five this morning and live, and
of course it's what about eight forty five nine? There's
like what fourteen to fifteen hours difference between here and Melbourne.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
I think it's the I think it's plus thirteen. It
finished about two am Melbourne time.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
Wow, okay, all right, So for those who didn't see
what happened the match recap.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
Well after, there weren't a single There wasn't a single
five set match on Rod Labor Arena.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
That's the main show court the whole tournament.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Carlos Alcaaz and Janick Center appear to be on a
collision course. After al KaAZ survived fits and starts of cramping,
came back from down five to three in the deciding
fifth set beat Alexander Zaverev, who still remains majorless. And
then on the nightcap or the morning cap for US Americans,
(03:09):
Novak Djokovic rolled back the years, came back from two
sets to one down to beat Yannick Centner, who had
beaten it five times in a row.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
I saw Cinner take out Elliott's basiri watching him earlier
in the in the.
Speaker 3 (03:23):
Tournament, controversially, so yeah, and this morning Novak Djokovic, after
appearing to be headed home in the last round, only
bailed out by an injury to his opponent, Lorenzo Mussetti.
He beats Cinner. He meets Alcarez in the final on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
Okay, all right, a lot of fun.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
I'm glad sorry he meets Yes, he beats Cinner.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
Say all right, so good to have the overnight early
morning recap of that. All right, coming up on the
program in a few minutes from now. We're going to
visit with Toby Rowling. Good friend, and he's the play
by played voice of the Oklahoma Sooners. That's right, I
said it, a good friend who's affiliated with Oklahoma. I've
(04:06):
been down this for many times with folks, you know,
in the broadcast world, with very few exceptions, very few.
Speaker 5 (04:19):
We are.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
Really kind of inextricably LINKEDS has brought because we share
a lot of the same experiences, highs, lows, frustrations, this
and that, not necessarily related to or connected to the
team or the team's performance. It's normally things like, you know,
trouble getting from one spot to another or the broadcast location,
(04:44):
or the you know, shared experiences and Toby and I
have had a few over the years of those, but
he is broadcasting a basketball team that has to be
very frustrated.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
Right now.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
I'm broadcasting a basketball team that has had good moments
but also has it's frustrations. And so they're on a
collision course for tomorrow afternoon at the Lloyd Nobles Center
at Norman, Oklahoma, Texas against You, which you can hear
here on thirteen under the Zone twelve thirty tomorrow afternoon
in the airtime and one o'clock the tip. So we'll
visit with Toby to talk about that also today, and
(05:23):
we're going to hear from Vick Schaeffer. First of all,
the recap of the women's game last night. We'll hear
from him, and then we're going to visit with vic.
He'll join us. We'll bring that to you in the
four o'clock hour, so we'll visit with Vic as the
Texas women come off. They're when at Florida last night.
It's just been kind of a bizarre last ten days,
(05:45):
what with the postponement of the Arkansas game. They played
for the first time in eleven days. They look good
and rusty at times in the first quarter, great second quarter,
kind of a sloppy, as I called it on the air,
gully third quarter. My wife texted me and said, hully
gully with a question mark, and I said, yes, it's
(06:09):
a broadcast phrase I picked up from my original broadcast mentor,
Bill Mercer, of the late Bill Mercer, who did North
Texas for thirty five years and was the Texas Rangers
first broadcaster, and did the Cowboys in the late sixties
early seventies called the Ice Bowl Game. Also worked with
Harry Carey on the White Sox and was a great news.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
Reporter as well.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
Recounted you know his role in reporting the news the
Kennedy assassination weekend, and he's and was the author of
three books. Was also on a gunboat in the Pacific
Theater in World War Two. He lived in me ninety nine.
He was incredible, incredibly well lived life. But he had
a phrase for that and what it usually describes, and
(06:54):
I'll bring this up to Vic when he's on with us.
What it usually describes is mainly a sequence. It doesn't
necessarily if you have a whole game of this boy,
you may have to take every rid of the hospital.
But it's a sequence where things get really ragged and
(07:14):
fast paced back forth and both sides can't get a
grip on it, and it's turnover. Begets turnover, begets a
bad shot, misplayed thing, stuff like that, and it just
goes in a pretty quick sequence back and forth.
Speaker 3 (07:32):
Holly Gully, I knew exactly what you meant.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
Well, that's good. It's good.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
Broadcasters kind of know that. They gotta know what that
deal is. But anyway, that's yeah, that's that's.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
And there are some holy goly sequences when you watch
a Vic Schaffer team.
Speaker 1 (07:49):
Well there are because they play it's such an accelerated
pace on both ends of the floor. And that's really
Florida wasn't able to really make a dent in what
was going on because even though Texas was out of
rhythm and sequence offensively, defensively, they were forcing bad passes
(08:13):
and rush shots and things like that. So that's why
that back and forth sequence went the way that it did.
So anyway, so that's that's the deal there, all right.
We do have inconceivable. It is a Friday. We do
know what inconceivable means on Friday, don't we.
Speaker 3 (08:32):
Jay, Well, I don't know if I did pack some
fruit Oh, sorry, we're goving a low hanging fruit.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
That's the one.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
We're looking for low hanging, that's correct. And where do
we find that?
Speaker 1 (08:44):
Ah? Yes, the most flaccid of the lower forty eight.
And that means Florida man. We all have a Florida
man update and some other things. With regard to that,
I shoulart to say, we'll take a look at the
NFL playoffs. There aren't any games this week, and this
is the inner regnum, this is the the that open
date weekend. And I stumbled across an interesting fact when
(09:09):
I was reading Sometimes social media can be helpful, and
I stumbled across an open ended question somebody wanted to
know wasn't an ai thing?
Speaker 6 (09:22):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (09:23):
And it was in a in you know, on a
chap And somebody wanted to know why the Super Bowl,
down through its fifty nine renditions, has had it where
some weeks some years there were there was only one
week between the conference championship games and the super Bowl itself.
(09:48):
It's happened I think seven times, and somebody wanted to
know why why? And it's it's kind of a snowflake answer,
meaning it's unique in terms of why it happened the
way it did, so we'll.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
Get to that.
Speaker 1 (10:05):
We'll take a look at that as well, and also
some other off season NFL note. So we have a
lot on board today. Glad to have you with us,
and we'll get ready for our visit with Toby Roland
coming up to play by play voice of the Oklahoma
Sooners when we continue right here on sports Radio AM
(10:26):
thirteen under the zone of the iHeartRadio app. All right,
we welcome you back here on this Friday afternoon here
on thirteen hundred zero.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
Who're hitting us back with here Jake.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
One of my favorite Oklahoma artists, Turnpike Triubadours seven and seven.
Speaker 1 (10:52):
There you go, all right, very good, and it's a
great lead in to one of my favorites. I was
just talking about this in the our segment one of
my favorite people. Uh and I said the play by
play voice of the Oklahoma Sooners, Toby Roland said there,
I said it, yeah, one of my favorites. I was
trying to explain to Hero how how how us in
(11:13):
that broadcast fraternity have a lot of shared experiences that
have absolutely nothing to do with the teams we broadcast
and uh and so that's that's where that kind of
bond kind of develops. And thank you for for hopping
on this afternoon. But that's that's kind of where it
is centered, isn't it.
Speaker 6 (11:31):
Yeah, there's a there's a camaraderie among the broadcasting fraternity,
and you know, it's this is a job for us.
As much as we want our teams to win, there's
a production and an execution element to it and everything
that we have to do to get our jobs done.
So whether it's sharing information about how you're going to
get a football broadcast out, or frequencies or travel or
(11:53):
whatever the case may be, what restaurants you should eat
in on a Friday night when you're on the road.
Uh yeah, we we through the years certainly become we
grow great friendships among the broadcast fraternity. Now I was
able to shake off everybody in the Big twelve except
for you, and you followed me to this new life.
Speaker 4 (12:13):
So you and I are still stuck together forever.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
I did mention the words inextricably linked, So you're right.
And we had a whole brand new wealth of friends.
Some of the some guys we had known for a
while anyway, we had known several of the broadcast.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
I'd known Andrew Monica a long time.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
The Texas and and m play by play voice, but
we got to know somebody, and here is here's an
absolute perfect example of what you're just talking about. So
Wednesday night, Texas is playing at Auburn. My first time
to do a game at Neville Arena. Nice arena, nice building,
and speaking of nice guys, Andy Bertram is the play
by play voice of the Auburn Tigers, and he came
(12:52):
over and we were chatting, and he expressed a lot
of concern about their effects feed microphone or effects feed cabling,
because we always all looked for that kind of stuff anyway,
and he said it might not be there tonight.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
They're working on it. He said.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
It's out for us too, he said, And sure enough
it didn't work, but we had, you know, we had
had the court side of Mike like we used to
always do anyway, and so it worked out fine. But
the best thing he said to me came after the
game and Auburn had won the game and everything, but
he came over to me and said, listen, he knew
(13:27):
that I was getting ready to get in a.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
Car and drive five hours.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
To Gainsville, I did the women's game last night at Florida,
and it was it's just easier to do it that way,
to go away, drive, then fly home with the team
and then fly back and all that stuff. It's just
easier to hop in the car and go. So he said,
he said, so you're going to Florida and I said, yeah.
He goes, all right, let me tell you something, he said,
because we just made that trip and we drove last weekend.
He and his broadcast team drove because it was a
(13:53):
Saturday afternoon game in Gainesville, and they left on Friday.
It's about a five hour drive. And he said, I
got to tell you. Your GPS is going to direct
you onto and he named a couple of highways think
US eighty two and Georgia Highway five twenty for about
a little over one hundred miles and that's going through
(14:13):
basically the countryside of southwestern Georgia over to the center.
And he said, I'm here to tell you until you no, no, no,
he said, that's definitely the best way to go, as
long as you're driving the speed limit, he said, or
close to. He said, be very careful all the way
until you get to Tifton. Where you hop on ice
(14:35):
ice seventy five for the last one hundred and fifty
miles down Againsville, he said, because I'm here to tell you.
From Columbus, Georgia to Tifton, going through all the ne
going through DAWs and all these places, he said, you're
going to see law enforcement officials of various types sitting
in the median on the side.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
They're just begging to pull somebody over. And he said, just.
Speaker 6 (14:56):
Get a kind of valuable information we share amongst each other. Yeah,
and he said, who knows how much money he saved?
Speaker 1 (15:03):
You untold him outs because I'm here to tell you.
As I drove through the night, I think I hit
ALLBNDY around midnight and all this stuff it is I
was going through. I counted no less than six various
law enforcement officials and agencies represented on the highway. Some
were just quietly sitting down in the median somewhere on
(15:26):
the side just he said.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
Some are rolling.
Speaker 1 (15:28):
But yeah, word, he said. He said, there are a
host of speed traps on that road. Just be careful.
So I owe him for that. So you're right, I mean,
those are the kinds of things, the tips we give
one another. You and I are at the point where,
in large measure we get on planes and fly with.
Speaker 2 (15:47):
The team and and and do that.
Speaker 6 (15:50):
I'm worried. I'm worried about you, just listening to you to
tell that story. Are you going to be able to
call this game tomorrow?
Speaker 7 (15:54):
Correct?
Speaker 6 (15:56):
What are we doing to take care of the cough
situation here?
Speaker 1 (15:58):
Oh, it's my annual you know. It said, that's that
thing that comes in from November to.
Speaker 2 (16:03):
To to about March.
Speaker 1 (16:05):
And uh, and then it take a little medication for
it and knocks it out for the game and it's okay,
it's it's good. Oh yeah, I mean it magically appears.
It was a little later this year. Normally, it magically
appears about mid November.
Speaker 5 (16:18):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
This this time, it started popping up in December and
then it goes away right about mid baseball season, I think,
and and and I've had it checked out by doctors.
There's nothing there. It's just it's just a cough. You know,
lungs are clear, everything's good. It just it it pops
up because.
Speaker 6 (16:37):
You do five hundred games a year.
Speaker 1 (16:39):
Well, you know, and some of it is allergy based too.
That we have a really bad seater piling down here.
Speaker 6 (16:45):
So as long as you got control of it, I
feel good.
Speaker 2 (16:48):
Yeah, there, we know what you're doing. There we go
all right, So.
Speaker 1 (16:52):
Let's talk about these two frustrated basketball teams, because uh,
you know, it's it's been a little bit of a
roller coaster of lake for Texas, lost them for who
won their next two, and then now have struggled again
and come off a loss for Oklahoma. I feel like
the word snake bit doesn't even, you know, accurately and
(17:15):
fairly describe what Porterboster's team has gone through when I
look not only have the results, I've watched a lot
of the actions of the games and seen all these
one possession games and Arkansas is an example of it
the other night. What do you think is the common
thing if there is one that's happened that has snake
bit in Oklahoma during these conference games.
Speaker 6 (17:34):
You know, a popular thing that we say, Teddy Layman,
my football broadcast partner, and I like to say is
that winning is a skill, and you don't just stumble
into wins. And a lot of times in these close games,
and we play so many close games and conference play,
you get down to the final three minutes or so
(17:56):
and it's a one possession game and one team's gonna
make the big shots and one team's not, and it
becomes contagious. We've all been around teams where they just
believe they're going to find a way to make that
shot late, get that big base hit late in a
baseball game. And then we've been around teams and this
is an example for Oklahoma this year, where it just
(18:17):
feels like everybody's looking at each other waiting for the
other shoot a fall like we're in this thing. Maybe
they even have a lead late, but they just know
the other team's going to hit a big shot against them,
and it becomes contagious the other way. That's what's happened
with this team. Had to play very well down at
Texas A and m lost late. Didn't play well the
last three or four minutes. They were up eleven against
(18:40):
Alabama at halftime, had a lead late against Alabama, Bama
hit big shots to beat them. The Missouri game a
week ago Saturday, just an absolute heart ripper outer where
they had a three point lead at the end of regulation.
Missouri hits a forty foot three pointer to send it
to overtime. Oklahoma's up to and over time time Mark
(19:01):
Mitchell dribbles all the way down the floor and hits
a three pointer at the buzzer to beat them. Had
that game won twice and a twenty seven percent three
point shooter beats them. And then the Arkansas game on
Tuesday night, they're up two after Nigel Pack hit a
three with a minute twenty seven to go and never
scored again. Arkansas scored the last six. So they just
(19:22):
keep finding a way to lose, or their opponents keep
finding a way to win all of these close games
against them. They're one and seven and are ten points
or so away in crucial moments from being five and three.
But that's not an excuse or anything, because you've got
to find a way to win those games, and so
(19:43):
that's been a real bugaboo. I think there are some
things to like about this Oklahoma team. They have a
very talented veteran backcourt with Xavier Brown and Nigel Pack,
Tay Davis and darry On Red transferred in this year.
They've played very well for them. Mowigee, their big man,
has been spotty, but when he's played well, he's been brilliant.
They're not super deep, but there's enough talent there to
(20:04):
win games in the sec they have not executed well
in the final two or three minutes of these close contests.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
Here's something that I've come across as well that folks
have brought up, and it might or might not apply
to either of these teams, but it might in some
form that in this day and age of nil and
transfer portal and you have almost entirely new roster makeups,
(20:30):
at least in terms of the key players on an
annual basis, that glue in chemistry sometimes suffers as a
result of that.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
I mean, you name some incredibly talented players.
Speaker 1 (20:41):
My gosh, we you and I both watched Nigel Back
when he's playing in Case State before he even went
to Miami, and then Xavier Brown obviously, and that Darien
Reed we saw him on Alabama's Elite eight team of
year ago. Tay Davis played at Notre Dame. I mean, good,
good players on that is it possible sometimes that the chemistry,
even as much as they see each other every day
(21:02):
and work and practice every day in game in game out,
sometimes that that winning chemistry might elude a team. I
sometimes I get that feeling about the long runs in
some games.
Speaker 6 (21:12):
Yeah, I think that's completely accurate, and we're gonna see
that fluctuate wildly with everybody across collegiate athletics, especially in
basketball when you've got such a small roster and everybody
we play, Craig, when you're filling out that pregame spot
erboard or you're doing your notes, everybody we play in
(21:32):
the SEC has what two or three guys back maybe
from the year before, Yeah, and maybe not. Some teams
have like one guy back from the year And so
it's such churn, such complete turnover from year to year
that some years it's gonna hit, it's gonna click, everything's
gonna work perfectly, and some years it's just not. And
(21:54):
you have the best of intentions. It seems like on
paper that it should work, and for whatever reason, whether
it's chemistry or injury or whatever, it just doesn't work.
And so I think there's gonna have to be an
acknowledgment of that, especially in basketball that you know, we
got eighty percent of our roster is new this year
(22:14):
compared to last. Maybe it's the final four team, and
maybe it's a team that misses the tournament. It's just
hard to know.
Speaker 1 (22:21):
Yeah, exactly Toby Roland, Sooner's played by play voice, visiting
with us here on thirteen hundred The Zone. I want
to go back to Nigel Pack for a moment and
get your thoughts on the contributions he's made. As I mentioned,
you and I have been doing the long end. He
don't even have to be doing it that long to
see when he was contributing to Kansas State and appeared
in nine games from Miami a year ago as well.
But that's the world we live in now with the
(22:43):
players that we see through what we just discussed there.
But how about your thoughts on what Nigel gives Porter
and the Sooners.
Speaker 6 (22:52):
I sure like him in a red uniform more than
a purple one. Yeah, I can tell you that he
absolutely killed us when he was at Kansas State. A
very mature, delightful young man. You can tell he has
played a ton of college basketball, and he is a
veteran and he's been around for a while. He's just
(23:15):
he seems like an extra assistant coach, that's how much
of an old head he is. And he's obviously incredibly talented.
His range is limitless and when he gets hot, and
like he has been the last couple of games, he's
I think one of the best weapons in the SEC.
I mean he's he can go out to thirty feet,
it's an incredibly quick release. Arkansas faceguarded in the entire
(23:39):
second half wherever he went, and he still hit a
couple of big threes against him. He can be a
bit of a liability on the other end because of
his size at times, but he'll fight you work hard.
He still gets three and a half rebounds a game
at five to ten, and it's the shooting weapon is
among the best in all of the sport. And so
(24:00):
just gotta you know when he's on. When he hits
one or two early sooner, fans get pretty excited because
they know that could mean that four, five, six more
could follow.
Speaker 1 (24:08):
Absolutely, you know, I got a chuckle. And again this
is out of that same file we're talking about. And
when I was looking at the game notes, the ou
Gay notes, I was looking and I was reading about
Xavier Brown, and I thought, well, when I first saw
on there, I thought he sounds familiar.
Speaker 2 (24:23):
Then I looked and.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
Oh, I know this dude last year playing at Saint
Joe's and and almost single handedly beat Texas long wards
managed to win the game. It was an early season
tournament game in Brooklyn, and and he had the game,
and and all he was was first team All A
ten at Saint Joe's a year ago. So it's an excellent,
(24:45):
good compliment the pack, isn't he.
Speaker 6 (24:48):
Yeah, they work great together. He's crafty, not going to
play above the rim, but excellent getting to the bucket
and can finish with either hand. He can shoot to three,
he can shoot the mid range. Again, he's not super big,
he's six to one. He's good at kind of jumping
the other direction to get his shot off when he
(25:08):
gets down into the trees. And both those guys they
need him to score. You know. Thirty thirty five points
a game combined out of the two of them is
what they need to be successful. The problem they've ran
into is a couple Xavier has to play so many minutes.
They just can't afford to have him off the court.
(25:28):
I mean, he's the guy they trust most with the
ball in his hands. Nigel can play a little point,
Kay Davis will play a little point forward, but Xavier
Brown is the guy that they need the basketball in
his hands, especially in the second half. He's the top
three throw shooter in the conference. And when you've got
a you know, two small guards, one five ten and
one six'. One they have ran into several situations this,
(25:52):
year especially in conference, play where bigger. Guards you, know
there's a bunch of you guys got some, two there's
a bunch of, six, three, six four centy five guards out.
There we'll just back them into the post and that
Forces oklahoma to double team and it starts the merry
go round after. That so they're, little which has been
a detriment at, times but they can go get, buckets
that's for. Sure And Xavier brown's the leading. Score he
(26:14):
does it. Quietly nigel tends to be you, know When
nigel hits thirty foot, threes it's eye. Popping it Makes
Sports CENTER a lot of. Times we'll get to the
end of the night And Xavier brown will have scored
twenty two points and my Partner Kevin henry AND i
look at each other and, say is that? True like
that can't be?
Speaker 7 (26:31):
Right Can?
Speaker 6 (26:32):
Like it's so. Quiet he gets there very, quietly but
he's he's a bucket.
Speaker 1 (26:37):
Getter texas and oh you play tomorrow at The Lloyd
Noble center In norman one o'clock here on the zone
for that twelve thirty year.
Speaker 2 (26:45):
Time let me get a.
Speaker 1 (26:46):
Quick question from quick, talk BECAUSE i know you obviously
have kept up with. It and it's a Big, Texas
oh you, weekend where as they say up, there oh
You texas.
Speaker 2 (26:53):
Weekend it's a.
Speaker 1 (26:53):
Big weekend overall because The sooner women will be down
here On sunday to take on The texas. Women college
Game day will be, here all that. Stuff AND i
tell everybody About Alia chamaz because she's been had a
pretty special freshman campaign For oklahoma For Jenny, Bronca.
Speaker 6 (27:12):
Yeah true freshman out Of, lubbock number one recruit in
the country out of high school and. Dynamic her overtime
period Against South carolina and that big win The sooners
got about a week ago was one of the best
performances that we've ever seen around. Here she had fifteen
(27:33):
points in overtime to help beat number Two South. Carolina
that's what she's capable of. Doing she can put up
a bunch of points in a. Hurry she's a tremendous
three point, shooter very fast in the open. Floor she's
a true. Freshman so you'll see games or periods of
games where she'll kind of disappear and you'll, say Where's,
Chavez and then you'll see Other knights or parts of
(27:54):
the game where she just takes over and goes for
thirty and looks like a first Team All. American she
needs to work on her cons consistency a little, bit
but you, Know oklahoma likes to play high tempo and
she is the perfect quarterback for that style of. Play
they still Have Peyton, bearholtz they still Have Reagan beers
and pretty much all the weapons that they had last
(28:16):
year when they were A sweet sixteen, team But chavez
is the difference and the player that they feel like
could help them get farther this. Season that'd be a great.
Game i'm looking forward to both matchups between those. Teams
maybe there'll be more than two this.
Speaker 1 (28:29):
Year, Yeah, Yeah texas Played South carolina four times last.
Year they played them twice already this, year so it
certainly happens in THE. Sec quick up, date bring us
up to date on our good Friends Kip johnson and
what sooner baseball will look, like because we are just
around the corner from that happening two weeks from the
day with the.
Speaker 6 (28:47):
Openers, YEAH i am very excited about this. Team is
similar to what we said about, basketball so much, churn
so many new faces that it takes us even after
the sea think that's going, Sometimes craig two or three
weeks to kind of get familiar with everybody and get
any kind of an idea of how good the team might.
(29:07):
BE i think they did a tremendous job through the
transfer portal beefing up their batting lineup this. Year that the,
hitters that was where they lacked last. Year they had
front line pitching that could match anybody in the conference
with The Witherspoon, twins but they didn't score runs, enough
and so they really made an effort to beef up their.
(29:28):
Lineup went and got a couple Of juco All american
catchers And dayton the chance Brock is out Of illinois
and several other. Bats they Got Jason walker's, Back Jackson
willets his, back and SO i think the lineup is
gonna be, better maybe significantly. Better we'll see about the.
ARMS i think the feeling in Sooner land is in.
(29:48):
Skip we. Trust, yeah you don't know who it's gonna be.
Yet The Mercurious brothers have come FROM. Unlv one of
them is the true, freshman the other transferred FROM, unlv
AND i think PROBABLY lj is going to be Their
friday night. Guy we'll. See eric came From. Texas from you, Guys,
yeah there's a. CHANCE i think he fits into the equation.
Somewhere but it's gonna be, uh it's gonna take a,
(30:10):
WHILE i, think before we are able to settle in
and see just how Good oklahoma's gonna be on The
diamond this.
Speaker 1 (30:14):
Year it'll be the same thing obviously with The longhorns
human though they stop start by being ranked in the top.
Ten but as we both, know that's a process it'll
take time to. Unfold, HEY i appreciate you doing this
And i'll be up there this.
Speaker 2 (30:27):
Evening look forward to seeing it at THE lnc.
Speaker 6 (30:28):
Tomorrow can't wait to see, you, Brother safe.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
Travels thank.
Speaker 1 (30:32):
You that Is Toby, rowland play by play voice of
The Oklahoma. Sooners we Have inconceivable coming up next On

the postgame comments from last night After texas won the. Game,
also later in the, program we'll bring you our post
game visit With Rory, harmon who had a Typical Rory
(31:38):
harmon game and it happened to be on her birthday
yesterday evening in The texas eighty eight sixty eight win
over The Florida gators last. Night of, Course texas plays This,
sunday The texas women Against. Oklahoma after the long worn
men play In, Norman. Oklahoma, Tomorrow texas o you on
the men's side from The Lloyd Doubles. Center we'll be
(32:01):
on the air twelve thirty with the pregame and the
tip off at one o'clock here on the.
Speaker 2 (32:05):
Zone that's, tomorrow and then On.
Speaker 1 (32:08):
Sunday The texas women Hosting, oklahoma and we've got that
one for you right here on the zone one forty
five pregame start time in the tip off at two.
O'clock Big, day ESPN's College Game day is there in.
Town there are lots of things on tap for that big.
Speaker 5 (32:25):
Game all.
Speaker 1 (32:25):
Right speaking of big, games Super bowl will not kick
off for another week, obviously but there are OTHER nfl
notes involved with this and going into the. Weekend Dan
gratziano FROM espn had ten a piece today on some
(32:48):
of the key free agency thinks and he puts up
some really valid. Questions you, know it's getting TO nfl
contract stension. Season so for, Example pukinakua And Jackson smith And,
jigma who were basically the two receiving stars of THE
Nfc championship last, weekend he posted the question might they
(33:12):
be able to push the market beyond The Jamar chase?
Speaker 2 (33:14):
Number there can?
Speaker 1 (33:16):
Be Jean robinson And Jamiir gibbs cracked a twenty million
dollars per year barrier at running, back and then he
said what should The texans And panthers do at?
Speaker 2 (33:24):
QUARTERBACKS C.
Speaker 1 (33:25):
J stroud And Bryce young Respective Leamil Jerry jones Paid
Brandon aubrey top dollar kicker money market, factors including individual
team budgets and a continually increasing salary cap play a part,
here he, Said but sometimes we can look ahead and
make solid predictions about what a player will be asking
for it when a team.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
Might be willing or unwilling to.
Speaker 6 (33:45):
Do.
Speaker 1 (33:46):
So let me jump first of all to The. Texans
the key extension candidates ARE. C. J stroud And Will,
anderson you, know off the, edge and of Course anderson
had had an outstanding, year so he's going to try
the top forty million dollars coming off that huge season
he had with twelve, sacks and gracianas If houston could
(34:11):
hold the line, there pointing out That Miles garrett just
set the single season sack. Record but During Nick cassario's
time as THE, gm The texans haven't played hardball with
their high end, players and it's not hard to imagine
them And anderson working out a deal that lands him
in that. Company and then he says stroud situation is
a little bit different because he didn't play as well
(34:35):
in his second or third season he's did in the.
First we know about the postseason. Meltdown the highest paid
quarterback in the league right, Now Dak prescott sixty million a,
year and If stroud tries to top, that The texans
might just pick up his fifth year option for twenty
twenty seven and ride it.
Speaker 2 (34:54):
Out so is there somewhere in the.
Speaker 1 (34:57):
Middle could he top fifty million per, year a number
that eleven current quarterback contracts. Exceed could he top fifty five,
million which is the number currently shared By Joe, Burrow Josh,
Allen Jordan, love And Trevor.
Speaker 2 (35:11):
Lawrence pretty good.
Speaker 3 (35:12):
Company it, Is but doesn't it feel, Like, craig there
are one or two tiers kind of separating the play
we've seen From stroud the play we've seen from those
guys you.
Speaker 1 (35:21):
Mentioned, yeah especially in the postseason and really at the
tail end of the regular season he had a Bad
That monday night game Against pittsburgh was, bad and then
in the postseason not, good both in the win and the.
Speaker 4 (35:31):
Loss so, yeah, Tough it's a tough.
Speaker 3 (35:34):
Situation it's hard for me to See anderson being put
in a situation to play hardball because everyone needs a.
Linebacker right linebackers ARE i think half THE nfl feels
as though that's an area they need to. UPGRADE i
know there's a good rookie class coming out at that,
position BUT i think he's gonna be A.
Speaker 1 (35:50):
Texan houston is scheduled to pay him nearly five point seven,
million so it's a bargain really in twenty twenty. Six,
obviously the fifth year option number for two twenty seven
is twenty six, million five hundred and thirty thousand, dollars
so they have him for two more years at just
over thirty two million. Total so as As gatzi honest,
is that's a. Steal as long as he's even a
(36:11):
replacement level, starter they could tear up the final two
years of the deal replace it with saying new five,
year two hundred fifty million dollar contract that ostensibly would
average fifteen million per, year but from the team's, standpoint
that would average only about forty three point six million
in new money once you take out.
Speaker 2 (36:26):
The thirty two million that he's currently. Owed so there's
something like that for The.
Speaker 1 (36:30):
Rams pukinakua and outside Linebacker Byron young are the ones
to look at. There So Jamar chase is currently the
highest paid wide receiver over forty million a, year but
there is a sizeable gap between him and thirty five
million For Justin jefferson so it'd be interesting to see
what The rams do.
Speaker 2 (36:49):
There Bjeon, robinson.
Speaker 1 (36:54):
He might be in that neighborhood of twenty million dollars for,
that but they say it's. Predicting an extension for him
could be kind of. Tricky if The falcons exercise the
fifth year, option they have him under control for two
more years at a total about eighteen, million which is certainly.
Reasonable that could allow them to wait if they think
(37:15):
he's asking too.
Speaker 2 (37:16):
Much off of.
Speaker 1 (37:16):
That Brandon aubrey for The, cowboys The Marvin, oversham by the,
way is extension, Eligible but if The cowboys don't want
to Extend, aubrey they could offer from a one year
restricted free agent tender that's likely around seven point eight,
million a second round tender likely around five point, seven
(37:37):
or write a first refusal tender about three point. Five
if they use the first round tender and another team
Offers aubrey a contract and The cowboys decline to match the,
offer the team that Signs aubrey would have to give
The cowboys a first round draft. Choice so that's why you'd, say,
well why would The cowboys wait? Around that would be
the deal if they did. It having said, that he's
(37:59):
clearly the best kicker in the. League so do you
want to roll the dice on?
Speaker 3 (38:03):
That if you're serious about, competing you need to Sign Brandon.
Speaker 1 (38:08):
Aubrey, yeah that's just one, piece and yeah it's quote
unquote only the, kicker but it's a huge piece there
where the guy is almost automatic from sixty in and
even a little.
Speaker 2 (38:21):
Beyond he's really.
Speaker 3 (38:22):
Good and when you play, indoors kicking is even more
of a factor in your, games.
Speaker 5 (38:28):
Right, right.
Speaker 1 (38:29):
Exactly so those are some of the offseason contract extension
parameters that teams are looking at and having to deal
with on.
Speaker 2 (38:39):
That so that's.
Speaker 1 (38:40):
Good that's gonna be interesting to follow, us all. Right
coming up, next we're gonna visit with, well we'll hear
From Vick schaeffer following the game, again we're gonna visit with.
Speaker 2 (38:48):
Him that conversation coming up next.
Speaker 1 (38:50):
Hours we continue on A friday afternoon right here On
Sports RADIO am thirteen under The zone and where you
always listen to us for free on THE Ir radio. App,
well the eighty eight sixty eight win for The longhorns last,
Night Leah crump big part of, It Madison, Booker Rory
harmon on her twenty third, birthday AND i had a
(39:10):
lot of different. Contributors so that win twentieth winter of
the season For. Texas they're now twenty and two and
they are five and two In Southeastern conference play in
a huge showdown coming With oklahoma On sunday at two
o'clock At Moody. Center next, hour head Coach Vix shaeffer
will visit with. Us we'll talk about but let's hear
some of his thoughts following the win last night For.
(39:33):
Texas so some comments From Vick schaeffer following The texas.
Speaker 8 (39:36):
Victory, well, just first of, ALL i Think florida's really.
Good been concerned about this. ONE i think they've been
in every game for the most, part especially in. Conference
they got to be the best one in six conference
team in the. COUNTRY i, mean they're just so talented and,
coach you're doing a great job with. Them i'm telling,
(39:58):
You i'm so proud of my. Kids we've got eleven days.
OFF i thought they played really. Hard we didn't play well,
early kind of got away from what we really were
wanting to do, early and then told them at halftime
we had thirty four paint. Points we were thirteen for,
SIXTEEN i, think is WHAT i told them at halftime
at The, cup AND i JUST i didn't want.
Speaker 5 (40:20):
Them to, settle AND.
Speaker 8 (40:23):
I thought there was early we got away from that
a little, bit but then once we got back after.
It defensively we weren't great. Today florida had twenty two
points in the third. Quarter but, offensively, boy we were really.
Good and when you, start when you start with here's
three through, three four for, four books eleven for twenty,
one gets everybody's. Attention then you go three for six
(40:47):
And kylo's five for seven off the, Bench judge two
for three off the, bench And crump is five for
seven and three for four from. Three you're gonna have
a chance to win most nights with. That and then
we had nine turnovers at the first at the first
after the end of the first, QUARTER i, think and
we certainly had that at halftime and only had four
in the second. Half AND i just keep trying to
(41:09):
impart on these, kids like we got some really good
offensive players and we'll just stop throwing the ball to
the other. Team we got a chance to. Score and
even when they went and zoned to Night booker did her.
Thing we got her the ball where she wanted. IT i,
mean there was some possessions there WHERE i was just
emptying the book for, her the playbook for. Her AND
i Thought rory ran our, team but she also did
(41:30):
an unbelievable job on one of the best players in
our country in our conference In live McGill like she,
was she.
Speaker 5 (41:38):
Was she ought to be.
Speaker 8 (41:39):
Tired it's her, Birthday this Is rory's, birthday and man
to run our team and have the job of really
dealing with. Her AND i thought our team did a
nice job of taking away some of the things that
we talked about and we worked really hard on for three.
Days they end up with three pointing and fast break
(42:01):
that was a. Concern and while we didn't quite get
WHAT i was looking for in fast break, points we
still got some stuff early that kind of loosened it.
Up but we had as long as sixty, yeah sixty paint.
Points when we're getting paint, points, y'all we're, focused we're
really being.
Speaker 5 (42:18):
AGGRESSIVE i thought book was aggressive.
Speaker 8 (42:19):
Early she got to the free throw line, early and
so we just you, know trying to get them to
just really not, SETTLE i, think and then getting our
five players to understand you're getting doubled in, triples so
we got to.
Speaker 5 (42:34):
Play through, you not to.
Speaker 8 (42:36):
You BUT i thought we played our twenty one turnovers
we Forced, again it wasn't. Perfect we still have some
lapses where we're just we're not VERY i just don't
think we're very tough because mentally we have some lapses
filling three point shooters like, man that is a pet
(42:57):
peeve and we've got to stop. It and you, know
at some point we got to learn from. That but
our fives really had a challenge today because they're five
shoot the.
Speaker 5 (43:08):
THREE i think they were five for thirteen at half
and they ended up six for.
Speaker 8 (43:14):
Sixteen so they went one for one for three in
the second half from three point, line which is. Good
so we did a better job of, that but still
made some mistakes coming off.
Speaker 5 (43:24):
Shooters but really loved how hard we.
Speaker 8 (43:26):
PLAYED i loved the press and again just filed too much.
Tonight we just we put them at the line too
much twenty three. Attempts you, KNOW i got to coach
better and teach better because we're obviously fouling people and
not doing a good job. There crump coming off the
bench really really made.
Speaker 5 (43:48):
Some big shots for.
Speaker 8 (43:49):
Us and, again when you, can you can bring in
another wing that can go make shots and put her
opposite a.
Speaker 5 (43:55):
Book it's a problem for.
Speaker 8 (43:57):
People and then they got to pay attention To rory
And brie because as those two can really create some
problems for.
Speaker 5 (44:02):
You and SO i love our. TEAM i love my.
TEAM i think they got a.
Speaker 8 (44:07):
Chance i'm Just i'm coaching the guy over there sitting
next to me and whatever seats we call what do we.
Speaker 5 (44:13):
Call those seats back? Home, yeah The hollywood.
Speaker 8 (44:16):
Seats you, know he's over there on me about you're
up twenty, Coach you're you, know calm, Down And i'm,
like you, Know i'm there's a side of me that
would love to do, that but there's also a side
of me that's trying to coach in wanting TO i
just want us to play. Perfect that's never going to,
happen but we're going to need everybody at some point
during the, year and when your numbers, called you've got
(44:38):
to come in and be ready to go and do
some nice. Things AND i Thought crump did. That crump
came in and gave us a big bump. Offensively she
didn't hurt me, defensively but for one drive that was.
It And kyle And kyla didn't give her any help
on help. Side she's over there hoed up with her
post player on the backside. Block so other than, that,
(45:00):
really just LIKE i, Said i'm proud of our. KIDS
i thought they played really. Hard i'm happy For. Rory
it's her. BIRTHDAY i thought they'd been locked in for three.
Days blair didn't a good job on the, scout AND
i thought our kids were really locked. In it's a
great win on the road against The florida. Team we
all know they've played a lot of really good teams really,
(45:20):
close and so it's a good win for.
Speaker 1 (45:23):
US a question THAT i kind of phrased a little
bit differently in the pregame conversation With vick last. Night
it was more about a curiosity of how his team
would perform coming off that layoff with the unintentional extra
buy put in there because of the winter weather that
forced the postponean of The arkansas game from Last sunday
(45:46):
To february. Nineteenth but he was asked was he concerned
worried coming off of the?
Speaker 8 (45:50):
LAYOFF i, was BUT i also know how many minutes
these two have played And Jordan, lee those kids played
a lot of minutes while we were without her and,
Breathe SO i mean we had zero.
Speaker 5 (46:04):
Rotation for a. While SO i gave Them.
Speaker 8 (46:06):
Monday tuesday, off not realizing we were fixed to have
the freeze of a lifetime and not going to Practice
saturday And, sunday so they had four days off in that.
Span we Practiced, Wednesday, Thursday. Friday But thursday's practice wasn't that.
Bad it was a lot of, shooting and then we
worked on just some defensive stuff On. Arkansas then when
we found out we weren't going To arkansas After friday's,
(46:28):
PRACTICE i gave Them saturday, off thing we were going Back, sunday, Practice,
sunday Take, monday then Go, Tuesday, wednesday get on our
normal schedule before we play On.
Speaker 5 (46:36):
Thursday, Well sunday.
Speaker 8 (46:38):
Came AND i couldn't ask them to get out on
the roads because they were.
Speaker 5 (46:41):
Terrible so then we go To, Monday, Tuesday.
Speaker 8 (46:45):
Wednesday so it was different for, sure BUT i think
for some of these kids it was probably needed a little.
Speaker 5 (46:52):
Bit and you can't keep them out like these.
Speaker 8 (46:54):
Three you can't keep them out of the gym like
these three invest in their. Craft it's why they Are
it's why these two are All, americans and she's going
to be. One they put into work and it's why
they're gonna be great pros and it's everything you want
out of somebody that.
Speaker 1 (47:13):
Cares Be florida team That texas beat as an outstanding
sophomore guard And live, McGill and she was their leading
scorer by and. Large it's a pretty young team And
kelly Gray finley is in a fifth season coaching, there
and he was asked about the challenge that that team
presented for her for him and why he felt it
was necessary to continue to coach his team very hard
(47:36):
and have them working hard even when they were comfortably
up late in the.
Speaker 8 (47:38):
Game, YEAH i mean it's, AGAIN i think they got
three McDonald's All, americans If i'm not. Mistaken and so
they've got good, players but you got to go through
it a little. Bit and in this, league this is
not the league to try to live on eighteen and
nineteen year.
Speaker 5 (47:54):
Olds you, know it's.
Speaker 8 (47:56):
Rough and, AGAIN i think they play really. HARD i
Think live McGill is a monster and really hard to deal.
With that's why when you got somebody like A Rory
harmon that can go.
Speaker 5 (48:08):
Toe to toe with. Her it really.
Speaker 8 (48:10):
Helps but again in their whole, scheme their five players
can step out and make threes like that's. Hard my
five players aren't used to doing, that and and SO
i just think from that, perspective and then you know
they've got some other other.
Speaker 5 (48:23):
Pieces too that are really.
Speaker 8 (48:25):
Good and so you, KNOW i thought our fours and
fives did a nice job denying out on the floor
and they're in that double post, set and again it's
it takes. Everybody it takes everybody doing a. Job you
don't guard a great player by. Yourself and so you,
Know booker steps out there and gets that steel out
on top of the, key gets a lamp out of.
Speaker 5 (48:46):
That she had three for the.
Speaker 8 (48:48):
Day she's had more steels probably today than she had
all of last.
Speaker 5 (48:51):
Year i'd have to look at. IT i don't.
Speaker 8 (48:54):
Know i'm just, saying but she's she's she's really embraced
picking on when her times when she can get in
spots and get steals like she's a great.
Speaker 5 (49:05):
Sealer she gets more steel ceiling than.
Speaker 8 (49:07):
Anything but she's really smart when she picks and chooses
her spot AND i thought, again for the most part,
tonight we did a pretty good job of handling them
and keeping them from doing what they wanted to. Do,
now the third quarter WAS i think twenty two, points
eleven points for free. Throws, okay that's a, Problem i'll wear.
(49:28):
It you, know we got to be. Better BUT i
think probably a little bit was that off of. Penetration you,
know we're having to rotate and we're whacking, people and
you know you. Can't you got to be, solid you,
know we go out there and file a three.
Speaker 5 (49:43):
Point shoot in the.
Speaker 8 (49:43):
Corner it's just those are the things as a coach
that drive you crazy because you're gonna Get we've already
lost two games that are one possession. Games SO i
wanted to turn around and tell that guy in The
hollywood seees that tonight you want to know Why i'm
coaching up twenty Like i'm coaching Because i'm going to
get in that game.
Speaker 5 (50:01):
Again AND i can't lose that game.
Speaker 8 (50:03):
AGAIN i can't lose that game for filing somebody that
we shouldn't. File don't get a loose, ball fifty to fifty.
BALL a book got on the. FLOOR i think tonight
after looseball. Justice those are things that we've been really
you want to know what we've been doing for eleven, days,
rebounding taking care of the, ball and loose, Balls like
we lead the country in dead ball rebounds off of.
Speaker 5 (50:26):
Us that's. Toughness tonight they.
Speaker 8 (50:30):
Had out of eleven offensive rebound seven were live, ball
so they had four of, them so we had four more.
TONIGHT i, mean we lead the country in dead ball
rebounds going off of us out of.
Speaker 5 (50:42):
Bounce that is.
Speaker 8 (50:44):
Toughness there's no if sands or butts about. It and
so we really focused on trying not to let that.
Happen we had another loose ball tonight down there in
the lane that we didn't. Get, AGAIN i tell them
all the, TIME i don't have to lose to get my.
Speaker 1 (51:00):
Attension, next vict was asked about The House, settlement revenue,
sharing the way it's gone in collegiate athletics, overall, football men's,
basketball women's, basketball you name the. Sport all of that
is going on now with the added emphasis on incoming,
revenue and he was asked how the league may have
(51:20):
changed and the sport overall because of.
Speaker 8 (51:23):
That this league from a parody, perspective is off the.
Chargement we've got ten teams in the top twenty. Five
Mississippi state just went To tennessee and beat them fifteen In, Knoxville.
Okay is, Again i've lived in this league. Before they've
(51:43):
heard me talk about The Valentine's day masacer in ninety,
eight our final four team At, arkansas we went To.
Mississippi they were dead last in the. League we go
there On Valentine's day and get beat thirty and that
same team a month later's playing in the final. Four
but it's just the parody of the. League and it's
(52:05):
always been that. Way on any, night you won't get,
beat you'll get embarrassed if you're not ready to. Play
and so in this, league so many great, players so
many great. Coaches life on the. Road Like i'm going
to take that win and run with. It it's a
road win in THE. Sec now we got to go
home and pre protect our home. Court but it's a
(52:27):
nightmare of a, league and you have got to be.
Ready and that's Why i'm so proud of my, staff
because they get these kids ready with a. Scout these
kids will tell you we don't miss too mean things
in a scouting. Report now they got to go, execute
but we don't miss too many. Things we take great
pride in COVERING, X y AND. Z and Then i'm
always coaching against the.
Speaker 5 (52:46):
Ghost well what if this? Happens what if they do?
Speaker 8 (52:50):
This and So i'm you, Know i'm just always coaching
against the.
Speaker 1 (52:53):
Ghost and, finally if you're going to Beat texas or
be on the flour with, them obviously you have to
deal with the dynamic. Duo you have to deal With Ory,
harmon you have to deal With Madison, booker and you
have to.
Speaker 2 (53:04):
Deal with the team.
Speaker 1 (53:05):
Overall but those Two harmon And booker kind of set
the tone game, in game, out not only in the,
games but also on the practice. Floor And vic said
that was the case again yesterday in the shoot.
Speaker 8 (53:19):
Around so you, know for me, personally when you got
these two and they have the practice that they had,
yesterday it permeates through your. Team so you're talking About
florida and how young they are and what they're going
through right now with, youth when you have veterans that
can show the rookies what it looks, like IT'S i
(53:43):
DON'T i still am learning as a coach at forty
one years to enjoy it to trust. It but you,
know when the season's, overall look back and, go why
were you so? Worried like those kids are all locked,
in they're they're you, know but these you, know these
kids when you have older kids that are, preparing like
these two had great practices, yesterday like our team was
(54:06):
locked in and shoe round this. Morning those are the
challenges you have with a young team and un, thus
you've got somebody leading every day and setting the tone every.
Speaker 5 (54:16):
Day And rory's done that her whole.
Speaker 8 (54:18):
Career like after five, Years i'll have, withdraws but that's
what it. Takes and Then booker comes in and she sees.
It and, again these three are in the gym every,
day like you can't keep them. Out even on an off,
day they're going to sometimes find their way back in.
There so to go To florida's, point they'll get. It
(54:40):
they'll get. It but it really helps to have. Maturity
we talk about emotional maturity all the, time and it
takes emotional maturity to be, really really. Special we're still
working on that a little, bit but we're along a
lot further along than some. People so appreciate Ch else's
(55:00):
Coverage thank you so much for all you do for
our great.
Speaker 5 (55:02):
Game praise The Lord Holme.
Speaker 1 (55:03):
Morns i'll add this final note on to What vick
was talked about. Yesterday so the team, wins and they you,
know go through the postgame. Things there's the, interviews the press,
conferences stuff like. That they're players who had family or
friends in town down there In, Gainsville. Florida Breonna president
(55:26):
had twenty family and friends make the drive down From, Jonesburg,
georgia that's just south Of. Atlanta so you, know that goes,
on and so they go through all of those things
and then the team you, know showers and changes and
gets ready and then they get on the bus and
they bust back to The airport's about a twenty minute
(55:47):
drive out to the airport there In, gainesville and get
off the bus on a chili night and go through
tsa screening that they have set up plane. Side they
do that and then they get on the plane and
they fly. Home flight was almost three hours in, length
about two forty five in, length and, normally just to
(56:09):
give you a little bit of insight on, this the
way this works with the procedure is when they get
on a plane they're you, know on the charter, flight
the flight attendants on the charter will bring, them you, know,
beverages things to, eat things to, drink which is normally you,
know just water and, gatorade maybe a couple of things like,
that and then maybe some snacks or something like. That
(56:31):
but on a flight that's going to take that length
and you're coming from east to, west and it's going late,
night past.
Speaker 2 (56:37):
Midnight, again we didn't touch down at about one.
Speaker 1 (56:39):
Am when that, happens by, large the players having put
in a night's, work are going to. Sleep they're in
the back of the, plane and they like gathering back.
There this is a really close knit. Team at pregame,
meals at all, meals at breakfasts and pregame, meals they
all sit at one long table, together and there's other
(57:00):
table set up for the managers and grand assistants and
coaches and us you, know and other staff people and
things like. That but on the flight's back they're normally
everybody is zonked out. ASLEEP i got up at one
point about midway through the, flight so we're you, know
almost an hour and a half into the, flight AND
(57:22):
i walked back to use the lab the, RESTROOM i go,
BACK i come. Out all the lights in the, plane
in the cabin there are, out you, know the ones
above the, seats all of them.
Speaker 2 (57:36):
Are it's.
Speaker 1 (57:36):
Dark all of them are out except one, light one
overhead light on a seat on an, aisle a row
of seats on the left side going up the. Aisle
that light was, on and there Was Madison booker And
Rory harmon looking looking at the video cut up in the.
Game Augi garita once told me that he Asked Bill, walsh.
Speaker 2 (58:01):
The Immortal San francisco forty nine ers. Coach they knew
each other and they were.
Speaker 1 (58:04):
Friends augie asked, him what makes your team so good
year in year? Out this from a guy, who by the,
way you, know won as many games as he won
nineteen hundred.
Speaker 2 (58:18):
Games you know that sort of, thing what makes your
team really?
Speaker 1 (58:21):
Good And Bill walsh's comment was to, say my best
players are my hardest. Workers Joe, Montana Jerry. Rice by the,
way this is difficult for A rams fan and discussed,
this but BUT i acknowledge. It Joe, Montana Jerry, rice
his best players were his hardest. Workers and that flashed
into my mind WHEN i came out of the lab
(58:43):
And i'm walking up the aisle and almost the entire
plan to start. Now up at the, front the coaches
are breaking down video and they're doing their, things and
the grad, assistance they're all busily. Working that's up at
the front of the. Aircraft but in the back where
the players are. Sleeping all the lights rally except for
one light with two Players Madison booker And Rory harmon
looking at the video cut up to the. Game tell
(59:05):
you something about those. Players we have more coming up
here on thirteen under the zone for.
Speaker 2 (59:10):
You continue on This friday.
Speaker 1 (59:12):
Afternoon you Had Carl schoning on the program went. Yesterday, yep, Okay,
carl of, course son Of Bill, shoning the twenty four.
Speaker 2 (59:24):
Year voice of The San Antonio first. Who by the,
Way bill.
Speaker 1 (59:28):
Retired i'm going to Get bill back on the program
here in a week or so or next week if
it can whatever as his, schedule my schedule. Allows bill
did retire From Spurs radio doing as The spurs played
by playvoice after last. Season he did not retire from, broadcasting.
However in, FACT i don't know if it's correct to
(59:51):
say he's as busy, now if not busier than he
was when he's doing The. Spurs but The spurs are
in the, schedule so you're following the schedule when you,
leave and this and, that all that kind of. Stuff
bill his schedule was in some ways reflecting my little.
Speaker 2 (01:00:05):
Bit he's zig.
Speaker 1 (01:00:05):
Zaggony he's doing Some Texas state games AND utsa games
and filling in and doing all that kind of. Stuff
he even said at the start when we visited last,
year when he announced his impending, retirement he said that
he was retiring from The, spurs but he was not
retiring from the. WORLD i think is the way he put.
It and he and his Wife jerry have done a
lot of, traveling AND i think they're somewhere like thirty
(01:00:29):
three or thirty four of the national parks they Visited
wow this. Year, yeah they do a lot of. That
bill does a lot of hiking on that which is
kind of difficult to. Imagine as long As i've known,
Him here's a dude who grew up in a row
house In, philadelphia and he's inner city, Kid West, catholic
high as inner cities he. Gets and here he is
(01:00:50):
the great, outdoorsman you, know out experiencing.
Speaker 2 (01:00:54):
Nature but he. Does and they do.
Speaker 1 (01:00:56):
That and they've traveled in An ashley quite a bit as,
well and he's really. That but we'll have him on
the reason WHY i brought all this. Up carl his
son is the host Of What spurs pregame and postgame, broadcast,
right and he's he follows THE nba very very. CLOSELY
i didn't get a, chance, obviously being In florida and transition.
Here how, much if, anything did the conversation involve the
(01:01:21):
possibility of a trade Of Gianna Setenne.
Speaker 3 (01:01:23):
Compo, yeah we got there pretty early in the conversation,
actually and he talked about The spurs and the dilemma they're, facing,
right not wanting to skip steps on what they see
as a build towards a competing, window and also looking
down at the standings and seeing thirty two and fourteen
second place in The west now the fourth best odds
(01:01:43):
to win THE Nba. Finals so there was a lot
of conversations there about what The spurs might be asked
to give. Up likely a player like A Stefan castle
will be figured into. That, yeah and those are the
decisions they're. Facing they also have to think about. This
carl named The cup teams in The, west Namely minnesota And,
houston who would instantly strike fear in The spurs if
(01:02:07):
they Added.
Speaker 1 (01:02:08):
Giannis is this difficult to imagine A houston team that
Has Kevin durant And giannis on the same, team you,
know in terms of two alpha scoring, guys.
Speaker 3 (01:02:19):
Especially the Way houston's had to play Without Steven.
Speaker 1 (01:02:22):
Adams right. EXACTLY i thought it was interesting one of
the quotes from the general manager of The Milwaukee bucks
about all of this sort of stuff and the way
it might.
Speaker 2 (01:02:40):
Go and by the, Way giannas has a calf.
Speaker 1 (01:02:43):
Injury that he's had to deal with as, well And
John horst THE gm have to decide from there in
it whether to make a move now or wait until
the off.
Speaker 2 (01:02:57):
Season which is a.
Speaker 1 (01:02:58):
Possibility and there was a scout in The east that,
Said i'm just not sure why it wouldn't make sense to.
Wait they can see where the lottery is and survey
their options then as. Well but they are. Listening they're
listening to to. Offers and, OH.
Speaker 3 (01:03:17):
I thought when teams had a generational starter Trade, craig
they just sort of shipped them off in the middle
of the night without opening up the.
Speaker 4 (01:03:24):
Market oh, sorry is that not how every team.
Speaker 1 (01:03:25):
Doesn't, yeah it hits a little close to home For mavericks.
Fans just let me just tell you.
Speaker 2 (01:03:29):
That you know.
Speaker 1 (01:03:30):
It, Listen it's caused my wife to switch. Allegiances she's
A lakers fan now and she were up In. Dallas
so and we've been to The Mavericks. Gas we went
To game four of THE Nba finals when we Played
boston year in a half.
Speaker 3 (01:03:44):
Ago linda's reason for quitting The mavericks is better than
mine for quitting The.
Speaker 4 (01:03:47):
Wizards mine was just.
Speaker 1 (01:03:48):
Apathy, yeah, yeah, YEAH i mean and when you quit
on The, WIZARDS i mean they're still. THERE i, mean
you haven't declared another team as your favorite, team right.
Speaker 3 (01:03:59):
RIGHT I am going to do What i've done for
most of my existence as A wizards, fan and that
is enjoy THE nba playoffs from a neutral, perspective but
not worry so much about the ups and, downs or
mostly the downs of a regular.
Speaker 1 (01:04:11):
Season, well my point is is that if The wizards
were in an alternate reality able to become competitive enough
to be a, contender what.
Speaker 4 (01:04:19):
Are we talking flying cars?
Speaker 1 (01:04:21):
Here i'm just, saying if it, happened you'd be back
on board with. Them, RIGHT i think. So so you
could qualify as a Fair Weather wizards fan then in that, respect, right.
Speaker 3 (01:04:30):
That's my only Fair weather. Team, okay BECAUSE i hate
Fair weather. Fans, okay SO i can be a self
hating Fair weather.
Speaker 1 (01:04:36):
Fan, okay all, right all, right because you're adding the
Wool Washington capitals, fan good or?
Speaker 5 (01:04:41):
Bad? Right?
Speaker 6 (01:04:42):
Right?
Speaker 3 (01:04:42):
Yeah and obviously having worked in the organization for a,
year you know have even more love for.
Speaker 1 (01:04:47):
Them my impressions of you that you are also adding
the Wool nationals fan haven't grown up IN.
Speaker 2 (01:04:53):
Dc we're talking about the teams in The washington. Area good.
Speaker 1 (01:04:56):
Bad you make it, Frustrated but you're still locked into The,
nationals RIGHT i.
Speaker 3 (01:04:59):
AM i follow The nationals to a t and there
is a lot of change happening there right.
Speaker 2 (01:05:05):
Now is it a little more complicated for me with The?
Commanders little?
Speaker 4 (01:05:09):
Bit little?
Speaker 3 (01:05:10):
Bit because you, KNOW i was always more of a
college football fan growing. Up, okay but The commanders ARE
i wouldn't root for ANOTHER nfl team over The.
Speaker 1 (01:05:18):
Commanders, Okay that's Where i'm going with. That See linda
roots for The. Lakers now now she, SAYS i don't
want The mavericks to do, poorly AND i will root for,
them but not against The lakers now because Of, Luca.
Speaker 3 (01:05:32):
And i've given The commanders an even warmer embrace now
That Dan snyder's.
Speaker 1 (01:05:36):
Gone it was hard to love them for a. While, yeah, Right,
well that's Why i'm. Asking and in the case of my,
wife with regard to The, lakers it's as much antipathy
Toward mavericks management and, ownership more ownership now Than nico's,
gone But mavericks ownership than it is just you, know
(01:05:59):
undie devotion To, luca although there is that part of it,
too because she just loves his, game and you, know
she just thinks the world Of. Luca he's always been
her favorite player since he's been in the. League so,
Anyway SO i just wondered about that with The ganas
thing and how it Affects bucks fans as, well because
it's will be a tough. Thing if he, does it
winds up being. Dealt it's a little bit different his.
(01:06:19):
Case luca wanted to finish his career as A. Maverick
gianna's has made it clear he'd liked to be, elsewhere
Preferably New york and Not, brooklyn preferably with The knicks
if they could work it.
Speaker 4 (01:06:29):
Out i'll tell.
Speaker 3 (01:06:30):
You spending time a couple of summers working In, WISCONSIN
i got to know a lot of really die Hard
wisconsin sports.
Speaker 4 (01:06:37):
Fans same thing For North.
Speaker 3 (01:06:37):
DAKOTA a lot of those fans sports support The minnesota,
teams right The Upper midwest Team since That Packers Super
bowl With mike, McCarthy they have had a lot of
heartbreak in the last couple.
Speaker 2 (01:06:46):
Decades, yeah true.
Speaker 1 (01:06:47):
Enough all, right we'll be back to wrap up our
number two here on Thirteen under The, zone third and
final hour of the program here On Sports RADIO am
Thirteen under The, Zone Craig way alongside the Producer Jay.
Herman coming up in a few. Minutes Vic shafer joins.
US i know we heard some comments from him following
The texas women's win last night down In, Gainsville, florida
(01:07:12):
as they beat The Florida gators eighty eight sixty. Eight
but a huge matchup coming up here On sunday as
The logorne will host The Oklahoma, sooners and that contest
At Moody center involves the number four and number ten
(01:07:34):
teams in the.
Speaker 2 (01:07:34):
COUNTRY Espn College Game day is going to be.
Speaker 1 (01:07:36):
There one forty five is our pregame start, time and
the tip off is at two. O'clock texas coming off
a game where they forced twenty one turnovers and scored
sixty points in the, paint you, know and.
Speaker 2 (01:07:51):
We'll talk To vic about the transition game and things like.
Speaker 7 (01:07:53):
That but.
Speaker 1 (01:07:55):
He had not been very pleased with his team's offensive
output in some RECENT sec games or something go sixty sixty,
four things like. That he wanted to see his team
get up and down the, floor and they did last
night to the tune of eighty eight. Points among those in,
There Rory, harmon who had a typical Classic Rory harmon
(01:08:18):
game for her where she affected the game in so many.
Ways and here's WHAT i mean by. That she played
thirty three. Minutes she did three of six from the,
floor made both of her free throw. Attempts she had eight,
points four, rebounds five, assists only one. Turnover she continues
to have that massive assist to turnover, ratio although she
(01:08:40):
was not real happy with herself with the one, turnover
and also had two steals in the. Game all of
this on her twenty third. Birthday team had a little
that gave her some edible. Things, well you'll hear it
in the conversation here coming. Up this was after the,
game after The texas victory there last night in afully
The Exact tech, arena as we visited With Rory. Harmon
(01:09:03):
it's time to visit with one celebrating the birthday Today
Rory harmon this evening in the contest For texas eight,
points four, rebounds five, assists only one turnover in thirty three.
Minutes i'm bad for a little old lady of twenty
three years, old, right that is my age.
Speaker 9 (01:09:22):
Today it felt like you WHEN i woke.
Speaker 1 (01:09:25):
Up, well let me get your thoughts on the way
the pacing of this. Game you guys were coming off
an eleven day. Break, yeah unintentional of, course because of
the weather. Thing did it seem like it was a
little bit difficult to get into the rhythm in the
first quarter because you really kicked it in the high
gear in the.
Speaker 9 (01:09:44):
Second, YEAH i think our a genera is like really.
RUNNING i, MEAN i thought we had really good. Execution
it was just a matter of fact of making a
shot at that. Time so really no frustration. THERE i
was just really happy that we were. Attacking the goal
was to attack and we got to the, room we
were making our, layups we were running in, transition everything
that we, planned that was what was going. On so
we just had to really play a little bit more
better defense and take away the through front line.
Speaker 4 (01:10:05):
Early BUT i thought we played really.
Speaker 1 (01:10:06):
Well you guys ran quite a bit of four guard.
Offense how did you watch that?
Speaker 9 (01:10:10):
WIN i, mean we worked on it in. Practice it's
it's one of my favorite. LINEUPS i like book out the.
FOUR i think it's a mismatch all across the, world
but it's just it brings a lot more.
Speaker 4 (01:10:19):
Versatility to our.
Speaker 9 (01:10:20):
Game even though we have great, fours our original, fours
our four guard lineup is a really good.
Speaker 5 (01:10:24):
One.
Speaker 1 (01:10:25):
Soon how much are you looking forward to getting all
the four Against oklahoma On.
Speaker 5 (01:10:28):
Sunday i'm.
Speaker 9 (01:10:29):
EXCITED i Mean i'm excited to play. This my time
is cutting down, here So i'm not taking any minute for,
granted no game for, granted and So i'm ready to
just leave it out on the.
Speaker 6 (01:10:37):
Floor all.
Speaker 1 (01:10:38):
Right, hey, congratulations happy, Birthday thank you so. Much, okay
by the, way what was that the stuff that The
tory gave?
Speaker 2 (01:10:44):
You what were those.
Speaker 9 (01:10:45):

Speaker 2 (01:10:46):
Icing, okay that was.
Speaker 9 (01:10:48):

Speaker 2 (01:10:51):

Speaker 4 (01:10:52):

sorts of. Things when we continue on This friday afternoon
On Sports RADIO am thirteen under The zone at The
ieartradio app here on A friday, afternoon a bit of
(01:12:10):
Classic southern rock from The Marshall Tucker band here with.
Us the REASON i Asked jake to play this particular
number heard it in The Love, song which is a
mega hit back in the mid, seventies and.
Speaker 2 (01:12:20):
The reason WHY i asked him it was.
Speaker 1 (01:12:21):
Twofold first of, all my broadcast Partner longhorn Baseball Keith.
Morland when he was drafted by The Philadelphia phillies in
the nineteen seventy Five Major League, draft he had Reported Winston,
Salem North carolina as a member of The Spartanburg phillies
and they had a game Against winston sale In Red
sox and his first minor league game got a couple of.
Hits when it was, over his teammates took him To
Bowman Gray, stadium which is where THE nascar class is
(01:12:44):
supposed to happen this weekend to See Marshall Tucker band
And lyonard skinnerd. There the other reason WHY i bring
this up is our next. Guest it has been well
established that he has wide range haste in music and
that Includes southern. Rock Vic, shaeffer The Texas women's head,
(01:13:05):
coach DID i remember that? Correctly you'd like yourself Some southern.
Speaker 7 (01:13:08):
Rock, right no questions all about.
Speaker 2 (01:13:11):
It that's good. Stuff good. Stuff.
Speaker 1 (01:13:14):
Man if you had a favorite genre of music that
you enjoy as much as, anything what would that?
Speaker 7 (01:13:22):
Be you?

Put on a. Show that's the music THAT i really. Enjoy.
Speaker 1 (01:13:55):
Yeah by the, way And, VIC i don't know if
you saw, It they're coming back With Lionel richie to
do a.
Speaker 8 (01:14:00):
Show i've already called and found out IF i went
on and get.
Speaker 1 (01:14:03):
Tickets there you, go all, Right, uh getting tickets might
be uh quite the prospect for long run fans to
try to do for This sunday's game Against.
Speaker 2 (01:14:14):
Oklahoma and we'll get to that in a.
Speaker 1 (01:14:15):
MOMENT i want to go back to last night's, game
when you AND i visited before the. GAME i asked
you about the kind of the mystery and the uh
and the extemporaneous quality of playing your first game in eleven,
days and and you said you were kind of anxious
to see because you'd had some good. Practices and for
being completely honest, HERE i can remember several times where
(01:14:36):
you told me you weren't real happy with the shoot
around the game, day but you were happy. Yesterday what
did you see yesterday that gave you the indication that
the team was going to go out and play well last?
Speaker 8 (01:14:45):
NIGHT i thought our three days of preparation was pretty.
GOOD i thought we were really locked in. FOCUSED i
thought our coaches did a good job with a scout
and uh and so and then shoot. AROUND i thought
those kids were really really locked.
Speaker 7 (01:15:02):
In so you, know.
Speaker 8 (01:15:06):
Sometimes you get a feel for, that AND i just you,
KNOW i told them before we went to The, florida
you're the fourth ranked team in the, country go play like.
Speaker 7 (01:15:13):
It and we didn't play like it all.
Speaker 8 (01:15:15):
Night we had two many turnovers, early but we did
start taking care of the ball in the second half and.
Speaker 7 (01:15:21):
Scored eighty eight. Points that's a good, sign no.
Speaker 1 (01:15:23):
Doubt and you had an explosive second quarter where you
really got the transition game going outscored in twenty six to.
Twelve there was one sequence or late first, quarter early second,
quarter AND i described it on the air as an
old broadcaster, term BUT i think coaches understand it as,
Well Holly, gully because things were going back and forth
at a breakneck, pace and neither team could get into a.
Speaker 2 (01:15:44):
Rhythm when your.
Speaker 1 (01:15:46):
Team gets kind of, it either by their own you,
know initiative or drawn into something like, that you know
how difficult is to get them to settle back into the,
game even though do you want them playing at that
real up tempo pace and causing the problems they clearly
caused For florida, Defensively, yeah we we practice that.
Speaker 7 (01:16:11):
Way you. Know we have a game Called longhorn that
we run every. Day we run it back to back four.
Speaker 8 (01:16:16):
Minutes, NonStop and we, just you, know we really worked
hard on our transition game going into this, game AND
i thought we got some good transition early against, them
and then the big thing, too we really kept them
out of transition and that was a concern because when
McGill's in the open floor in, transition, man.
Speaker 7 (01:16:39):
That's when she can really get. You AND i Thought
rory was so special last. Night guarding.
Speaker 8 (01:16:46):
Her took that responsibility and forced her into nine turnovers
AND i think the kid went six for, sixteen but
she scored two of those six After rory.
Speaker 7 (01:16:57):
Came out of the. Game so you.
Speaker 8 (01:17:00):
See such a good, player tough, matchup and so it's you,
KNOW i Thought rory was really good last time.
Speaker 2 (01:17:09):
On her, birthday no doubt about.
Speaker 1 (01:17:11):
It Vic shafer joining us here on The, ZONE i
want to go a little bit off, topic at least
as it pertains to your specific, team and it kind
of does in a related, Way BUT i wanted to
ask you a couple of. Things first of, all general philosophy,
question because this seems to pop up more and, more
whether you're talking about the men's game of the women's.
Game AND i don't think we've ever talked about this.
(01:17:33):
Before but you're up, three there's under ten seconds to
go in the, game the other team is. Inbounding maybe
they maybe they got the time out called and they're
inbounding in the front.
Speaker 2 (01:17:44):
Court maybe.
Speaker 1 (01:17:45):
Not do you have a regular strategy on whether to
foul based if they're going link to the floor or
if they're inbounding at the hash they're in the front?
Court what's your thought and your philosophy on. That if
you're up, three do you? Foul do you up?
Speaker 2 (01:17:58):
Foul?
Speaker 8 (01:18:00):
YEAH i think again if you if you've got a
file to give.
Speaker 7 (01:18:05):
And they're going to full length to the, floor maybe.
Speaker 8 (01:18:07):
You get them with you, know five seconds on the.
Floor but my problem with that is you got to
trust somebody to get them without getting tricked into them
taking a shot from. Anywhere And i've always been a guy, that,
hey we're gonna we're gonna play it, out we're gonna.
Speaker 7 (01:18:27):
We're going to defend a three point, line because.
Speaker 8 (01:18:31):
WHAT i don't want to happen is they go the
line make one out of two because we filed and
put them at the line for a two shot.
Speaker 7 (01:18:38):
File it's not even one in one. Anymore it's too.
Speaker 8 (01:18:41):
Then you don't block, out they get an and they
get a rebound in an and, one and now you
lose by one because you didn't block out on free throw.
Line to, me that's that's a worse risk than somebody
throwing in a three to tie. You and and SO
i Just i've always been that.
Speaker 1 (01:18:57):
Guy is it is it also make more problematic these
days by the and one being folded in now to
the to the officials, playbooks so to, speak as they're
watching the continuation. Thing and we saw a little bit
of it last, night And i've seen a lot of
it on the men's side as. Well but it is
that also something else that has to be factored in
(01:19:18):
the philosophy and whether you're fouling or, not or even just,
defending to make sure you're not getting someone into continuation.
Speaker 8 (01:19:25):
Situation, YEAH i, mean, yeah you start letting people put
their you, know opinion on something or what they solve
versus what's. Reality it's just it's really it's really, difficult
and it magnifies everything you.
Speaker 7 (01:19:42):
Do so AGAIN.
Speaker 8 (01:19:43):
I try to control as much AS i. Can and,
again our, players we didn't execute it very well Against
old miss. Here we didn't get the switch right and
they got off a. Shot BUT i just have a
lot of confidence in our team and we'll and how
we do.
Speaker 1 (01:20:00):
It talking basketball With Vic schaefer here on thirteen hundred
of The. Zone with regard to your, team AND i
asked you last. NIGHT i, said it's about the healthiest
you've been in a, while and you, said perhaps maybe
even throughout the course of the. Season how does that
affect what you want to do with your? Rotation how
and the relative Depth because you've got a lot of depth,
(01:20:22):
now and you, know and gives you lots of different
options whether you're going big or smaller based on the
opponent and the game. Situation but now that you've got
pretty much a completely healthy, team how does that impact
what you're examining in terms of your rotation and how
deep you're.
Speaker 8 (01:20:39):
Going, YEAH i Think i'm still trying to figure that.
Out you, know we've got obviously getting crumped back really
adds an offensive dimension to our team that we really.
Speaker 7 (01:20:52):
Need last, night she was game, changer and.
Speaker 8 (01:20:57):
You, know she came in and really did a good
job for seven from the, floor three for four from.
Speaker 7 (01:21:02):
Three.
Speaker 8 (01:21:05):
Didn't really hurt us too Bad, Defensively she's always going
to be in there trying to.
Speaker 7 (01:21:09):
Rebound SO i.
Speaker 8 (01:21:11):
Was again when you can add that in with our
our kids that have been playing the bulk of our
minutes now and then you get you, know we finally
Got breed, back so it gives us two more guards
to play in that. Rotation and Then i've got all
three of our, uh all three of our four players
(01:21:33):
are available, now so it's just just trying to figure
out how everybody plays and who's who's ready to.
Speaker 7 (01:21:41):
PLAY i think that's a big.
Speaker 8 (01:21:42):
Thing you, know, kids it's played me And i'll show,
You and for a, coach it's you better show me
SO i can. PLAY i can't have tryouts in AN sec.
Speaker 7 (01:21:51):
Game If i've.
Speaker 8 (01:21:52):
Had problems with you in practice doing certain. Things there's
no Way i'm gonna think it's just gonna. Light it's
gonna turn on in a. Game SO i, think you,
know that's the hard thing for young. People and then
you know how they portray things back to, home whether it's, friends, parents, relatives.
Speaker 7 (01:22:10):
Agents you, know.
Speaker 8 (01:22:12):
Nobody knows unless you're in practice every.
Speaker 7 (01:22:14):
Day but this is the life of a.
Speaker 8 (01:22:17):
Coach this is the transactional world that we live, in
and you, know you just have to try to navigate
it and do right by the kids that are doing
things right each and every. Day do right by, them
and hopefully you have a good line of communication to
the rest of your team and they understand where they
are individually and how they can improve and get better
(01:22:38):
to give them a chance to.
Speaker 1 (01:22:39):
Play you referred to in practice every. Day and one
thing that you've been now that you've got a completely
healthy team working on throughout the course of the, season
but perhaps even a little more of late is the
four guard. Lineup and you worked through it in the
shoot around yesterday and you ran it last. Night how
do you feel about that generally? Overall when you got
(01:23:00):
the four guard lineup on the?
Speaker 7 (01:23:01):
Floor, well we when When.
Speaker 8 (01:23:04):
Crunk came in last, night things changed, radically drastically, offensively and.
Speaker 7 (01:23:08):
We got away from, them you, know we we got,
Away we pulled, away and not that.
Speaker 8 (01:23:13):
It was our all by, herself but she had her
hands in a lot of, it and so.
Speaker 7 (01:23:18):
It just again it's.
Speaker 8 (01:23:23):
Analytically, speaking it's our best offensive, lineup and so you,
know just trying to figure out when and where it.
Works you, know who's gonna guard? Who those things all
come into. Play but that group's got great chemistry, together
no doubt about.
Speaker 5 (01:23:39):
It.
Speaker 1 (01:23:40):
Yeah let me go back to a couple other generalized
questions and Then i'll ask you About. Oklahoma first of,
all we haven't talked about this to this point yet this,
SEASON i, know, uh you, know we're just around the
corner from the first reveal coming from the tournament selection
committee as. Well the hint seems to be obviously that
(01:24:01):
your group would be one of the top four, seeds
which you would want to be a number one, Seed i'm. Sure,
again and it's a little bit different this year even
than last, year isn't. It vic bitt Uh in talking
about the difference between The west And. Birmingham now we're
talking about the difference Of sacramento And Fort. Worth, uh
if if you're you, know locked in that and we
talked quite a bit about that about you, know the
(01:24:23):
the aversion of having to go way out. West so you,
know even though that that's on down the, Road, uh
this is me and you talk about your. Players SO i,
mean it would it would certainly behoove you wouldn't you
think to be locked in where you can, play where
you can be seeded in when two home games then the.
Year then you're playing In Fort worth Of Dickey's arena
where you've already won a game this, year as opposed
(01:24:45):
to having to go out west To.
Speaker 8 (01:24:46):
Sacramento, YEAH i, mean it's a lot of basketball, left
that's ALL i can tell. You you, know we we
we're just trying to take them one game at a.
Speaker 7 (01:24:57):
Time we've were.
Speaker 8 (01:24:58):
Coming off of obviously a really tough road trip where
we had to go TO lsu and then right back
on the road To South carolina and we didn't we
didn't handle that, well and so we're just trying to
fix our.
Speaker 7 (01:25:13):
Ls and win one game at a.
Speaker 8 (01:25:14):
Time you look ahead and that's when you're going to
miss the stuff climbing the. Mountain but you, KNOW i
think if you just take care of things one day
at a, time one game at a, TIME i think
that's when you know.
Speaker 7 (01:25:28):
You'll look up In march and you'll be where you
want to. Be so we, uh you, Know i'll leave
all that.
Speaker 8 (01:25:34):
Up that's that's great for the fans to have reveals
and things like, that but at the end of the,
day you, know our two, losses you, know they were
one possession, games they were on the, road one of
the teams we'd already beaten on a neutral. Floor we've
lost by three to them on their, floor and so you, know,
(01:25:55):
uh hopefully.
Speaker 7 (01:25:57):
You learn from. That we've talked about.
Speaker 8 (01:25:59):
It hopefully our kids are embracing what we've got to
get better and at and. Fix and so that's kind
of kind of HOW i view all that.
Speaker 1 (01:26:08):
Well AND i say this leading into this. Matchup here's
a national television exposure for your group Against oklahoma On.
Speaker 2 (01:26:18):
Sunday that's ON.
Speaker 1 (01:26:19):
ABC i mean even people without cable can pull that
up and watch.
Speaker 2 (01:26:23):
That so It's.
Speaker 1 (01:26:24):
Sunday it's a huge matchup there and the chance for
your team to demonstrate some.
Speaker 2 (01:26:29):
Things but let me get your thoughts on The.
Speaker 1 (01:26:31):
SOONERS i guess as good a place to start as
any is that Freshman Aliah. Chavez AND i know you're,
very very familiar with her and her game and what
she did Against South carolina was it was something. Else
but how About aliyah and how About oklahoma? Overall as
you examine?
Speaker 8 (01:26:46):
Them, yeah, again you, know really really good. Team, Obviously
jenny's done a great. JOB i have a lot of
respect and admiration For jenny and the job she's done,
there and you, know they're they're playing at a really high.
Level they average seventy seven points a game in. Conference you,
(01:27:08):
know Obviously chavez is leading them in scoring at almost
nineteen a, game and then they got the big five
player inside that's almost fourteen For holst is a fifth year,
Senior Sara williams is a monster that's really hard to deal.
With so they got good players and they've got to you,
know they've got a way that they want to, play
and we're going to have to make sure we understand
(01:27:31):
how they want to, play and we got to we're
gonna have to Deal we'll deal with it defensively and then,
offensively we've got to continue to execute and get the
shots we want when we. WANT i thought last night
we really executed some good, stuff got shots we wanted
where we wanted them, from and you, know we had
sixteen offensive boards as. WELL i Thought kyl And braill were.
(01:27:55):
Good they WERE i think a combined nine for, eleven.
Speaker 7 (01:27:58):
And so they they did a good. Job and so
we're going to do the same thing On.
Speaker 1 (01:28:03):
Sunday VIC i almost find it just unimagined when you've
heard me say this before to say words in terms
like this about tickets could be hard to come, by
because in my twenty nine years of calling the women's,
GAMES i can remember a lot of games with really
good teams That Coach conrad would have really good adop
ten ranked teams and be lucky to see somewhere between
(01:28:24):
twenty five hundred and four thousand fans on a good
night or on a weekend. Night and here we are
talking about ten thousand on a regular basis and sellouts
and all that sort of. Stuff, clearly what you and
the staff have done and then putting together the program
is the biggest factor in all of. This and so
it begs the, question how much do you see it
(01:28:45):
reflected in your team when they're getting an opportunity to
play in front of home crowds like this and not
just play in some difficult road.
Speaker 8 (01:28:54):
Environments, yeah, Again, Craig It's it's WHAT i talk about
all the.
Speaker 7 (01:29:01):
Time it's part of building a.
Speaker 8 (01:29:02):
Program you, know you're building your fan base is part
of building your. Program you, know we WHEN i got,
HERE i think they were averaging fifteen hundred two thousand a.
Speaker 7 (01:29:12):
Night they had you, know eleven.
Speaker 8 (01:29:13):
Hundred maybe season ticket holders and you, KNOW i was
coming from a place where we averaged ninety five hundred to,
night sixty five hundred season ticket holders and a third you.
Speaker 7 (01:29:24):
Know in a community of thirty one thousand.
Speaker 8 (01:29:26):
People so my vision coming here was what we. Have
and AGAIN i say this all the.
Speaker 7 (01:29:33):
Time you can give all the, way all the.
Speaker 8 (01:29:36):
FREE t shirts you, want all the chicken for scoring
whatever points you, wanted you can do if your product
ain't no good and nobody coming to see you. Play
and SO i give our kids all the. Credit they
are fun to, watch they're great. Kids they play really,
hard they play the game the right, way and you,
(01:29:57):
know they're just they're the reason and why we got.
Sellouts the rest of the, year we're having crowds over
ten thousand. People and you, know again it goes. Back
it doesn't matter how good how cold the beer is
in the moody or how good that hot dog. Taste
people aren't coming in there to get that if they
(01:30:17):
don't have a good product to. Watch and So i'm
really proud of our kids and just who they. Are
they are great. KIDS i have some of the greatest
kids in all Of, america and you, know come from unbelievable,
families and so it's fun for me to see it
AS i THOUGHT i would see it WHEN i took
(01:30:39):
this job back in twenty, twenty and to know it
can be.
Speaker 7 (01:30:43):
Done AND i don't think people thought it. COULD i
MEAN i had all kinds of, people even, administrators tell, me,
man you, know there's so much to do In. Austin
you know there's so many other things they can do.
Speaker 8 (01:30:53):
Besides come to a, game and you know you know,
this this and, this and yet you know you just
you just put your head down and go to work
and you try your. Best and, AGAIN i think our
fans have come to really.
Speaker 7 (01:31:09):
Love and appreciate our. Kids and that's what you.
Speaker 8 (01:31:13):
Want you want a team like those people At Mississippi.
State they didn't that wasn't my, team that was their.
Team and if something ever happened to one of those,
kids or they felt like one of those kids was
being in, mistreated, man they'd be the first ones on my.
Speaker 7 (01:31:28):
Butt and SO i think that's.
Speaker 8 (01:31:31):
What you're trying to get, to is that you want
people to really feel invested in your, team your. Kids you,
know little old ladies bringing a dozen, cookies you, know
to somebody because they know it's their, birthday or their
birthday was last, week or the same little, girl get
in the same, autograph get in the same picture after every.
(01:31:54):
Game but you know, what that's the highlight of that kid's.
Life and if you can make an impact in some
little girl's life or little boy's, LIFE i, mean we
got little boys that love our, kids love our.
Speaker 7 (01:32:08):
Team they're there all the. Time if if.
Speaker 8 (01:32:11):
You can make an impact in their, Life, wow that
you're doing. Something and our kids Are our kids are doing.
That And i'm so proud of our players because of
who they are and the impact they're, making no doubt about.
Speaker 1 (01:32:26):
It and your words are ringing in my ears what
you used to, say And i've got to believe that
does your heart good to. See in addition to you
said when you first came, IN i know who my audience.
IS i believe you said blue hair is gray hairs
and no, Hairs and now you have some dark hairs
and some younger ones in there, too.
Speaker 8 (01:32:46):
No, Doubt and again it you know WE'RE i love
the blue hairs.
Speaker 7 (01:32:51):
And gray heirs and no.
Speaker 8 (01:32:52):
Hairs don't get me, wrong but their voice is a
little different than that student, section and it's a little
different than those. Kids and you know families that moms
and dads that are bringing their sons and their daughters
and when they walk out of the, rant they're, going,
HEY i want you to play LIKE i want you
to play as.
Speaker 7 (01:33:11):
Hard As Rory harmon does.
Speaker 8 (01:33:12):
Defensively we got a little dribbler, game you, know, TOMORROW
i want you to go play as hard as she plays.
Defensively or you, know if you'll stay out on the
driveway and keep, shooting you'll be able to shoot it
like you, Know Leah, Krump Madison, Booker Jordan lee. WHATEVER
i just think that's where we. Are that's the impact
(01:33:32):
that these kids are having in our.
Speaker 7 (01:33:34):
Community and, again.
Speaker 8 (01:33:36):
You have to give our kids credit because they're, Approachable
they spend genuine time with.
Speaker 7 (01:33:41):
People they make, them you, know they.
Speaker 8 (01:33:44):
Make those folks feel, important and then they are. Important
AND i think that's what our team, understands is the
importance of. Man if it means forty five minutes on
the floor after a, game that's a small price.
Speaker 7 (01:33:58):
To pay to have ten thousand plus in.
Speaker 2 (01:33:59):
This every, night no doubt about.
Speaker 1 (01:34:01):
It He's Vic, Shaeffer texas women's head. Coach we'll hear
the Game's sunday right here on The zone one forty
five hour, time two o'clock tip off As texas takes.
Speaker 7 (01:34:09):

Speaker 1 (01:34:09):
YOU i always appreciate the. Time, vic thanks so. Much
see it moody On.
Speaker 8 (01:34:12):
Sunday see it's moody On, Sunday, buddy thanks so much
for the.
Speaker 7 (01:34:16):
Opportunity praise The.
Speaker 8 (01:34:17):
Lord and huge.
Speaker 1 (01:34:18):
Horn That's Vick, Shaeffer Texas women's head. Coach we have
more coming up on thirteen under The. Zone sometimes When
i'm doing a, BROADCAST i feel Like i'm talking as
past As Mickey dolan's is during this, song right that
like this? Song, yeah this from The monkeys and they
all wrote this.
Speaker 2 (01:34:37):
Song by the, way would you had another?
Speaker 5 (01:34:39):
Drink it?
Speaker 4 (01:34:39):
Would he is a hot Sing you should have taken
time to.
Speaker 6 (01:34:41):
Think, BESIDES i got a big, stretcher must have had another.
Speaker 4 (01:34:43):
Day it didn't need a second.
Speaker 3 (01:34:44):
Lay it was funnyest SONG i felt like Before subterranean
poem Sick.
Speaker 2 (01:34:48):
Blues But i'm doing a little bit, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:34:51):
Kind of kind of goes on when the you get
a crazy. Sequence what's one of those holy goalie?
Speaker 1 (01:34:55):
Sequences, yeah little, bit a little ben and it's and
it's you, KNOW i looked at the lyrics on this
and it's all about a guy who had a couple
of things to drink that he, SAID i never should
have drank. That and he was with a girl and
and he winds up and he winds up in a
river and he's and he can't really can't swim, well
(01:35:18):
and he's, Like i'm gonna. Drown i'm going. DOWN i
can't do. This and towards the end of the song
here he figures out how to float and and he
talks about HOW i may just float all the way
down To New, orleans you, know AND i.
Speaker 2 (01:35:30):
DON'T i don't want to see this girl. Anymore so, anyway.
Speaker 1 (01:35:35):
It makes me think about here on A, wednesday on
A friday afternoon, here because you, Know Cameron parker likes
to do a fire Me Up, friday and that's kind
of fired me up.
Speaker 3 (01:35:44):
Tuned, HEY i tried to keep it more upbeat. TODAY
i took the thank you took the feedback from Last.
FRIDAY i don't know what. HAPPENED i forgot About fired
Me Up.
Speaker 1 (01:35:52):
Friday, WELL i think different people have different ways.
Speaker 2 (01:35:58):
Well of looking at, it you, know that sort of
THING i mean some.
Speaker 3 (01:36:02):
Of the some of the bands and and you, know
even BANDS i like to see live that THAT i.
Enjoy your musician songwriters you leave and they give you
more to think about than stuff to be fired up about.
It AND i don't know why that, is Because i'm
a generally, upbeat positive.
Speaker 1 (01:36:15):
Person, yeah, yeah, yeah it kind of threw me off
a little. Bit was, like, man we were just kind
of going down a rabbit hole a little bit, here
just kind of a slow plotting.
Speaker 2 (01:36:29):
Thing like it was.
Speaker 4 (01:36:29):
Interesting Because christapleton's cold if you weren't tuned, In.
Speaker 7 (01:36:32):
Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:36:32):
Exactly it was interesting Hearing Vick schaeffer talk about how
one of the best concerts he'd ever seen His Earth
wind And fire uh With Lionel richie and and by the,
way for folks who don't, know the wave was explained
to me that show At Moody, center which was the
first concert AT eart At Moosey, center was also really
(01:36:53):
the first real. Event it was called a soft. Open
you know when you hear about stories that do a
soft open before they're big grand. Opening it was a
soft open to try to test everything. Out and that
was a concert Starts, Winded fire and and uh and.
Speaker 3 (01:37:07):
Uh Lionel, richie it's not going to be a soft
open at The Olympic Hockey.
Speaker 4 (01:37:10):
ARENA i talked about it inconceivable.
Speaker 2 (01:37:12):
Yesterday, yeah, yeah we have any update on.
Speaker 1 (01:37:14):
That by the, way if they if they are they
getting closer to having it.
Speaker 2 (01:37:17):
READY i mean we're on single digit days until it gets. Started.
Speaker 3 (01:37:20):
Right the logos are being painted on the, ice but
it has not been skated. On, wow they said we're
going to test it out for the women's. Game by the,
way it's always the women that get throw.
Speaker 1 (01:37:31):
Under they to be the the the crash test dummies
or the test the lab.
Speaker 3 (01:37:37):
Rats they put out a statement and, said, well, well
we'll have six days to make any adjustments before THE
nhl players. Go because the big worry is THE nhl
players will say this isn't safe for, us.
Speaker 1 (01:37:45):
Yeah and then to not want to. Play and if you're, saying,
well that's just too bad for THE. Us, remember THE
nhl players are largely. International There's american players to be, certain,
obviously but there's plenty of international players from The scandinavian
countries And european. Countries so they want to make sure
they get it right for everybody involved and correct me
(01:38:10):
If i'm, Wrong but it just seems to me that Every,
olympiad Every, Olympiad Summer games And Winter, games every single
one has this kind of wet paint on opening night
theater type of theme going, on where facilities just aren't.
(01:38:31):
Done you have More and if people think you only
got four years to get, together know you have more
than four. Years these these are announced well in, advance
eight ten years out whatever you have, Time but a
lot of it's caught up in funding and lack of
and politics and all that sort of. STUFF i, mean
the one that always comes to mind for me Is,
rio because they are just lagging horrifically behind.
Speaker 2 (01:38:54):
To get things.
Speaker 1 (01:38:55):
Done and you, know all sorts of accusations of graft
and you know political uh ne'er do wells and all
that sort of stuff that, happened but it's happened in
The european countries as. Well they've had they've had problems with.
It you, KNOW i seem to remember. That you, know
by and, LARGE i think things have been ready to
(01:39:17):
go on time when The United states is hosting The,
olympics whether it's, winter, SUMMER i seem to remember maybe
it Was Salt lake in Uh o. TWO i guess
it was h when they Hosted Winter games that there
was that sort of issue getting things.
Speaker 3 (01:39:33):
Ready if they have, it it won't be for, hockey you,
think right to be for a sport that doesn't typically you,
know safeways to jump. In the cross country ski course
needs some, landscaping something like. That biathlon not. Ready i'm
so ready for the biathlon. Though what do you like,
best the skiing or the?
Speaker 1 (01:39:49):
SHOOTING i like the controlling your heart rate after you
stop and have to hit that.
Speaker 3 (01:39:55):
TARGET i like the the guys who have to who
have to catch up in the pedally after they missed
the target because they, couldn't you, know they went too
fast out of the, gates and the strategy of it
do you go slow and.
Speaker 1 (01:40:06):
Steady here is our First olympic edition use of the
term penalty.
Speaker 4 (01:40:12):
Loop i'm telling.
Speaker 3 (01:40:15):
You Andrew CATALOG i think was calling biathlon in twenty,
ten And i'm. SERIOUS i was, LIKE i need to
go into play by play BECAUSE i had never seen it,
before and he made me get so hooked on it
AND i was, like this is.
Speaker 1 (01:40:28):
Magic, yeah, Yeah i've always enjoyed it and we talked about,
This Bob, slid, luge ski, jumping a lot of the
downhill and things like that. TOO i enjoy doing. THAT
i enjoy obviously the hockey men's and. WOMEN'S i enjoy
both of. That speed, skating the short track in the
LONG i like. Both not that much into the figure.
(01:40:50):
Skating i've watched, it and we'll watch, it you, KNOW
i will admit to You i've watched it a lot
more When Verne lunquist And scott hambling we're doing the.
Commentating WHEN cbs had The Winner Big game, Contract, vern
Who i've known for many years back to the, eighties
WHEN i produced the program that he And Brad sham
did Called around THE. Nfl they you, Know vern became a,
(01:41:14):
real real top flight not only commentator on, that but
also understanding it and you, know and Having Scott hamblton
with him. Helped it was kind of funny seeing The
saturday night live takeoffs on the on, them you, know
with the Late Phil hartman Playing vern And Dana carvey
Playing Scott.
Speaker 2 (01:41:33):
Hamilton it was pretty. Funny and seeing that over the.
Speaker 3 (01:41:35):
YEARS i think that might be a similar thing to
to HOW i View Chris fowler's tennis. Commentary he is
so he's into, it so so insightful on. IT i, think,
yeah it means he said this. Before it means as
much to him as being a part of college football
the tennis. Does AND i heard him on a podcast talk,
about you, know he wants his voice to be a
part of. History AND i feel like you can hear
(01:41:55):
that in some of his tennis. Calls you, know they
they hold up really well and you go back and.
Speaker 1 (01:42:00):
Listen, okay it was interesting back in the seventies ON,
Cbs pat Summer l used to do.
Speaker 2 (01:42:04):
Tennis are got a good look At Chris.
Speaker 3 (01:42:07):
Evert she's going By chrissy now and that all that
bugs my mom so like she was Never chrissy when she.

many years and then back there and now that It's.
