Speaker 1 (00:00):
Who, by the way, informed both Will Matthews and myself
when we were sleepily sitting at O'Hare International Airport in
between planes coming back from Michigan last Sunday morning, and
I made a Buffett reference and Roger did, and all
of a sudden, Will Matthews piped up and looked at

(00:22):
Roger and said, why, what's the deal? What's the deal
with Jimmy Buffett? Why are you so into Jimmy Buffett?
And then Roger went into the explanation, and a lot
of it had to do with the sound, like what
we just heard. You liked that whole steel drum calypso
kind of vibe beat thing, right.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
The tropical thing.

Speaker 3 (00:41):
I grew up in southwestern Ohio, which you experienced a
lot of gloom from late October until April, so I
kind of fell in love with that tropical lifestyle. I
had a sister that went to the University of Florida.
She brought back an album by this guy named Jimmy Buffett,
and the rest is the rest is history. Rip September first,

(01:02):
a year ago, A couple of weeks ago.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Yeah, true enough, Okay, what has been the before we
get into talking about your KBVO Big Game of the
Week and some of the other things. Let me get
your thoughts on. I have a feeling it's similar probably
to what I have come across this week. What the
vibe has been, be it from fans or other media

(01:24):
or people in the workplace coming off of that Michigan thing.
And the only reason why I say this is because
the feedback I've gotten and the vibe I've gotten is
one that would make Sark very uncomfortable. It's all about, Okay,
they got over the Michigan hump. Now it's a downhill
run all the way to Dallas for the Red River
rivalry thing. With three consecutive home games in an open date,

(01:45):
have you gotten any of that vibe?

Speaker 2 (01:48):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (01:49):
I mean so many different things, but kind of all
falling into the same funnel of Okay, Yeah, that was
the first test. And now with a twelve team playoffs,
you have a couple of chances maybe to stub your toes,
so you you avoided that. I guess some of it
has been Also, how how good is Michigan? You know,

(02:09):
how how good is this Michigan team that they they
pretty much dominated uh in every phase? Ironic that Schrummore
signs this contract a couple of days after that home performance.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
Uh but but yeah, certainly.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
And I think one thing that I'm getting though a
lot is is they just don't see a lot of
cracks right now. There's nothing you can point to. And
it's obvious, Okay, they did this, but here's the deficiency.
That's you know, Sark and the staff will will work
that out with the guys. But but yeah, it's it's
a little different though, Craig.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
It's almost like, okay, now it's here. Two. Now we've seen.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
What he can build and how they can do it
the right way. Line of scrimmage guy goes down and CJ.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Baxter.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
They plug into Trey Wisner, who's taken no real meaningful
snaps at running back until this year. And and the dudes,
you know, making plays like everybody else.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
So if I were to ask you to tell me
who has been even in what many hoped and expected
to be a two and oh start, and it is.
But even with that in mind, if I were to
ask you which player has kind of raised your eyebrows
the most or surprised you have been a surprise, either

(03:25):
offense or defense, who would it be.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Well, I'm going to say this.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
I thought he would have a breakout year, but he's
proving me right, So maybe he hasn't surprised me. But
he's made that big jump. And I think, you know
I'm talking about Gunner Help. He has turned into such
a weapon at tight end, and he can get downfield,
he can break tackles, he can get vertical, and you know.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
He and Jaden Bleue at your leading receivers. So what
does that say?

Speaker 3 (03:53):
You know that the tight end with all the portal
guys that came in in this vertical pass game and
all that, but in Stark's offense, hour running tight end
all that stuff.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
So I'll go with with with Gunner Helm.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
It's a good call. And and I'd kind of thought
about that, but I kind of dissuaded myself from saying
that only because of what you said. You made a
really good point. I think we both kind of expected
him to have a breakout. So if I went full surprise,
how about Jarret Gibson on our offense, only because a
freshman playing this well early on and averaging over five

(04:28):
yards of carry And then yeah, and then on defense,
I'm I'm really deep diving here because a lot of
guys have have have performed.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
Very much one. So we'll see if we match up here.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
You're not gonna match me on this one. I guarantee
you Mine. Mine is Jermaine Lollay only because he's in
the rotation. He's he's been around the ball, he's made
h you know, he's made three tackles. Uh, we didn't
talk about him that much. Here's a guy came in
from Louisville. When we were talking about the defensive transfers,

(05:02):
we're talking about Mcooba obviously, and and you know, we're
we're talking about Trey Moore, and we're talking about Bill Norton,
even Tia Saba, but we weren't talking about Lola. And
here he is. He's made three tackles. He's been as
Jimmy Johnson used to like to say, he's been active,
he's been in the mix.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
And Sarks said it after week one, he was he
was happy that he's kind of forced his way into
the rotation.

Speaker 2 (05:27):
So, yeah, that's great.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
And I'm sure a lot of people were scrambling because,
as you said, when when the portal happens first, you
look for guys that.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Are going to touch the football, So you got all
the receivers.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
Then you look for a guy like mccooba, who's a
local name, played at Clemson, had a lot of success.
So yeah, you have to go pretty far down on
the list to get Lola and Mine. Craig is a
guy that's been around but really hasn't done anything, has
fought injuries.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
Jalen Gilbert, Uh, that's a guy that has allowed John A.
Baron to move to the corner. He plays that star.

Speaker 3 (05:59):
And one thing I noticed Saturday just watching he is
very active and very vocal pre snap and I always
look for that because that tells me. You know, you
can talk about leaders, you can talk about locker room
and practice, but the guys that you can tell pre
snap are getting other guys into the right place or

(06:19):
recognizing something.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
That tells me a lot too.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
And he hasn't played a lot of of of football
at the University of Texas, So Gilbo would be my
one on on defense now, a starter, so you know
he's expected to make plays, but maybe even exceeding a
little bit.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
And he's not a big guy.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
No, And I would say to add to your point,
and Sark mentioned this this morning on the media availability
zoom that when when somebody asked him about about Andrew mccooba,
and he was he was, you know, extolling what the
virtues of what mccooba brings to the program. He talked
about that position flex and he said he can play

(06:58):
both the star and the boundary. In other words, Gilbo can,
as as Sark and his coaching staff like to say,
empty the tank. Given everything he's got when he's out
there and when he needs a breather, mccooma can slide
into that just as Jade Baron can.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
Yeah, and you know, Sark also talked about the dvs,
you know, bringing guys to the ground, and Gilbo is
fearless and he'll he'll he'll put a hit on you
as well.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
But yeah, those are two points.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
So I was wondering about that star position because of
having to move Jada, and he was so valuable in
that position last year.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
Visiting with Roger Wallace here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
hundred zone. All right, let's let's move over to high
school football KBVO Big Game of the week. You've got
Vandergriff and you've got Stony Point, and we know what
a job Craig Chesher has done over there at Stony's
an icon in the area, just as Drew Sanders is
at Vandergrift. I'm kind of curious as to the mindset

(07:54):
what Drew has said about his guys coming off what
just had to be a gut punch of an incredible
foot ball game and that overtime lost to Cedar Park
last week.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
Yeah, it was. It was that.

Speaker 3 (08:05):
I think it was a bit of a head scratcher
for him that it got to that there were some
things that happened down the stretch that went against him,
which usually if you look at a forty nine to
forty six double overtime game, that's probably gonna happen some
close missed opportunities. So you know, he he gets right
into district play. He certainly had their attention this week

(08:25):
of practice as they.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
Get ready from Stoney.

Speaker 3 (08:27):
But yeah, I think that that outlookd outcome rather surprised
a lot of people, not only here but around the
state because, like you said, what he's built there. I
got a funny story about Stoney, Craig, we actually visited
with defensive coordinator Kevin Saboch, Keith Morland and I before
the game, and Craig Sheesher gave me his number and
I call it and I noticed the calv Illinois.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
Well, if you like.

Speaker 3 (08:52):
To follow small college program home towns, you'll know that
that's University of Northern Illinois. So he gets on the
phone at joke of the mode of calp Illinois. Your
people have to be pretty excited. Oh, I played at
Northern Illinois.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
Wow, went there. His dad's a longtime coach. He got
injured and then turned to coaching.

Speaker 3 (09:08):
But yeah, quite a coincidence that the DC over at
Stoney's been flying high this week after that his alma
maters Win.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
Did you mention to him that you were a suitcase
alumnus of Notre Dame, so to speak, and that you
you kind of follow the front the fighting irish a bit.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
Now, I didn't give him that one.

Speaker 3 (09:24):
I did tell him that one of the old Northern
Illinois coaches, Bill Mallory, he was at Miami of Ohio
when I was growing up, and his son Mike, who
played at Michigan, and I were pretty good friends in
elementary school and they know the Mallories because his dad's
been with the program for several decades.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
But now I didn't bother him with the Notre Dame
part of it.

Speaker 1 (09:44):
So you bring up your matchup, and I don't know
how many folks around the Greater Austin in Central Texas
herey know this, but I know you've taken note of
this this particular week, Week three of the Texas high
school football season. I mean to tell you, really, without
bragging or without hyperbole, that the center of the universe

(10:06):
this week is the Greater Austin area. You start with
tonight with with Weiss and A and M consolidate, which,
by the way, Cameron Parker on the play by play
of that one for Texan Live.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
So we're competing, is what you're saying.

Speaker 1 (10:19):
Yeah, yeah, so yeah, there is that. There is that.
But then tomorrow tomorrow you've got LBJ against Wimberley and oh,
by the way, Westlake is taking on in a task
to see the team that just worked Katie last weekend.
I mean, this is kind of the center of the

(10:40):
Texas high school football universe this weekend here in the
Greater Austin area, and that didn't happen often.

Speaker 3 (10:45):
I love the Wimberley LBJ matchup, and I give both
of those coaching staffs credit for scheduling was LBJ Liberty
Hill playing the regular season. We had one of those
games and it was just as entertaining a high school
game in September as you would get. So yeah, and
then of course Westlake Tony Salas are a great schedule

(11:05):
leading into district play, so they'll be ready. You can
watch that one on KXT dot com tomorrow night or
KVVO on Saturday evening.

Speaker 2 (11:13):
But yeah, and like you said, the Vista Round Rock
game is good.

Speaker 3 (11:17):
Hopefully the Vista quarterback, not certain of his his status,
got got banged up in the loss last week to Booie,
so we'll see how he's doing tomorrow night against a
round Rock team everybody's not quite sure about because they
they played the two non district games but hadn't gotten
a lot of attention, but took care of business.

Speaker 1 (11:34):
And the long bus Ride Award this week is shared
by two programs, Lake Travis who's going to Midland the
play Midland Legacy, and Liberty Hill, who is also going
to Midland, but who is playing El Paso East Lake
at Midland Christian. Now that's some bus rides.

Speaker 2 (11:57):
There that's telling me they're they're having a hard time scheduling. Yep,
that's my clue.

Speaker 1 (12:02):
No, Now you're right, you're you're you're exactly right. I
don't think there's any doubt about Okay. UH. By way
of promotion, to remind fans again a chance to uh
to watch some outstanding pregame coverage of the Longhorns this Saturday.
They need to turn no farther than are you back
on kbv O or.

Speaker 3 (12:20):
Or k starting from this point with your show Longhorn
Weekly Tomorrow night at nine on kvv O with Coach
Sark and Posey Whitaker, and then UH Saturday evening five
o'clock Texas Game Day on kbv O Alex Oka for
Dan Neil Johnathan Thomas h to get you ready for
the UTSA game, and we'll have a special guest, uh,

(12:43):
non football guest on that show on Saturday.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
Yeah, I've been hearing that there's now been kind of uh,
how's the best way to describe this an outreach so
to speak, so beyond the non football related sports to bring.

Speaker 2 (12:57):
In Yeah, you know, l HN Game Day did that
as well.

Speaker 3 (13:01):
They would you know, certainly introduce other other teams and
sports from ut with the our pregame show. So we're
going to keep that up this week and spotlight a
Longhorn athlete that hit a milestone this week. I'm going
to be starting to give enough clues where Longhorn Athletics
fans can figure it out. But anyway, we are going
to step out of strictly football for part of that

(13:25):
Texas Game Day.

Speaker 1 (13:26):
Hey, we'll look forward to that. And again, the Texas
Game Day show will be at five o'clock to borrow
Rogers term from just a few minutes ago, competing with
our radio network pregame show at five o'clock for the Kicken.

Speaker 2 (13:38):
At the same time. I'm sure you've done that from
time to time.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
Yeah, yeah, I've had you and I have stood in
the booth sometimes and and one of the scoreboard live
comes on somebody who like point to that and point amiga.

Speaker 2 (13:52):
I'm like, the Weekly is on l AHN with you.

Speaker 1 (13:55):
That's right, That's exactly right. Yeah, absolutely, Hey, thanks, have
a good call tonight and I'll see you in the
booth on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (14:05):
All right, thank you.

Speaker 1 (14:06):
Uh that is Roger Wallace and again Roger and Keith
Moreland tonight with the call of Vandergrift and Stony Point
as they play some district football, and that'll be going
on tonight. You can catch that on k B V
O and UH. And then of course Roger will be
with me in the booth on Saturday when the log
Worns take on the UTSA Roadrunners. Our coverage here on

(14:31):
the Zone will begin at three o'clock with our Loghorns
game day coverage with Cam Parker and my cardball Harge
and the world strongest man, Mark Henry. They'll be down
there in the in uh what do you what do
you call? In the area down in Wiscom hang out

(14:51):
the hook them hangout. They'll be down in the hook
them hangout doing that. That's at three o'clock. Network pregame
at five, and the kickoff is at all right, We've
got some other NFL notes and some things to get
to when we continue here on Sports Radio AM thirteen
under the zone of the iHeartRadio app.
