Speaker 3 (00:58):
Devrone Arty two park for you.

Speaker 4 (01:00):
One, just wanting to if fin any chance you have
an update on Tremont Mark's status and second, outside of
the effort on Monday, what you know, encourage you both performance.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
Yeah, Eric, Good afternoon, guys. I think the one thing
about Tremon is that, uh, they're doing a great job
with them right now. Training staff's excellent. I mean, war
is the best in the business. Uh. But I think
that what we all with him right now is he's
gonna be out indefinite right now until you know, we

(01:32):
have him at a full slate right now. We don't
want to have to bring him out and then you know,
we have some issues with this ankle situation and and
it lingers on for you know, better part of the season.
So we want to we put him out there or
give him an opportunity to get back out there. We
want to make sure he's a full tilt ready to
go and he's able to play at the level he's
capable of playing. So you know, we'll continue to work

(01:55):
through it. Uh. And uh, you know, with the other
guys getting other opportunit his next man mentality. But but
that's kind of what we all with his situation. Likewise
with Devon Pryor as well. Both of those guys will
be guys that will have out indefinite until they're able
to come back, uh and be at full strength for us.

(02:16):
I think in terms of the game. The other night,
again well coached Ohio State team, older Ohio State team
that came out and shot the ball extremely well. We uh,
you know you you know, you out in every contest,
you're gonna you're gonna you're gonna get lessons that that
you're gonna learn whether you win, whether you lose.

Speaker 5 (02:38):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
Unfortunately for us, it was through a loss that we
had to come back and learn you know, uh, tough
lessons in terms of we have to be really good
at our shooter defense. I mean, our guys have been
working at shooter defense. We've been working at it over
the course of you know, two months. Uh, but those
guys came out and really shot lights out, so we
can't really have man down, hand down, man down. Uh.

(02:58):
And they shot it with rain, I mean they shot
the ball deep, uh, with ranging and give them credit,
they made big shots and big moments and uh, but
I do think our group, you know, persevered through some
adversity and really, to be honest with you, in two games.
It's the only adversity that our team has experienced to

(03:20):
this point right now. So it was a growth curve
for us in that regards. We hadn't we hadn't been behind,
so it was the first time that we were behind
and playing from behind, and and it showed a little bit.
I thought our guys kind of we didn't really panic,
but we kind of really kind of pushed the button
in terms of let me go try to get this
all back at one time as opposed to just continue

(03:41):
to work the game. But we settled in and uh,
and we put ourselves in position a couple of times
to be in position to you know, have an opportunity
to win the ball game. So you know, that was
positive and and and again I thought, our guys played hard.
Are the areas that we need to continue to get better. Uh,
there are areas we need to continue to get better

(04:01):
and areas that we'll fix. And you know we all
committed and said we'll do that together. You know, our
staff and our players working harder on getting better. Yeah, hey, Ronnie,
A couple of things.

Speaker 5 (04:14):
One is what do you have to do to you,
the staff and the players to create a better flow
on offense. And also when you looked at the Ohio
State three pointers, were their instances of your guys just
having their hands down where they were maybe in position
but not quite defending well.

Speaker 3 (04:33):
I think flowing offense. I think our team is going
to evolve over the course of the season. I mean,
you don't just instantly have flow. That didn't That didn't happen,
not with the new team with ten guys, so that
takes time. Same thing we had last year. We weren't
playing our better basketball till you know, Miller Conference play.
In terms of once we had all our guys, and

(04:54):
our guys were for me. You were playing with each other.
So I wish I had a magic one for you,
Mark and I you know that we're just gonna click
right off the bat. In terms of you know, a
new team and gather or or playing, you know, the
way we want to play offensively, I think that'll evolve.
I think and not only us, but many teams and
non conference play are going to experience a lot of

(05:16):
the same kind of growing pains. In terms of offense,
your defense should be ahead of your offense. Right now,
we we work, you know, we've got to get better
defensively in terms of really trying to you know, put
consecutive stops together and get some offense from our defense.
We did the other night. We forced fifteen turnovers and
I think we scored eight team onths off off our defense.

(05:38):
But but to me, that's that's the area. I mean,
we let our guys play it, you know, and we
have since we've been back here. We let our guys
play and we run a lot of similar things that
they run at the next level because those are the
kind of guys that we're trying to recruit. And and
that's the style of play we try to play to.
You see a lot of different actions we run from

(05:58):
an office standpoint, same action as they run the NBA.
You know, you got to make reads, you got to
play out of it, and you got to give guys
the chance to flow and not be robots. And uh,
and that's really what we try to do from a
from an office standpoint. We try to score early in
transitioning we can, and then from that point, you know,
we flow in some form of you know, whether it's

(06:20):
a pick and roll or a direct hit, or we
get right into some form of emotion or movement. You know.
But again that takes time where teams have to develop
a really good chemistry and flow about themselves. It wasn't
until I don't know, uh, I want to say midway
through conference play last year that we I thought, we
really figured out what we were trying to get that

(06:42):
office and we and we were pretty good at it.
What was your last what was the other party?

Speaker 5 (06:46):
Of course, were their instances where your guys maybe got
out on the shots but didn't get their hand up
to contest them.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
I think again, give them credit. They made they made
they made shots that made ten three in the first half.
You know. But but but I think, uh, I think
there was a room for improvement, for us to continue
to get better in terms of contestant shots. I mean,
I think our hands were down on guys that we
knew could make shots. I mean we we we went

(07:14):
into the game knowing, Mitch you could make a shot.
We knew, we knew that the freshman kid could make shots.
We knew that that was that was something he was
capable of doing. Now he shot it with a lot
more range than we thought that he had probably initially.
But once he makes one, then you have to adjust
and and and adapt during the game. You know, when
you talk about Rawll, I mean he wasn't really a
three point shooter, and he made two threes the other night.

(07:36):
We're playing him as a as as kind of a
nun shooter. But you know, again, give them credit, they
made shots. We're going to be better for it because
you know, we have to we have to again and
get better with our shooter defense.

Speaker 6 (07:48):
Artie, Good afternoon, And I think I think the whole
nation saw what what what Cam was capable of on
er tray on Monday night. What do y'all need to
do to get trace some help on offensively? And are
there any particular players that you expect to carry a heavy,
heavier offensive load the special Tremont out Well, I.

Speaker 3 (08:10):
Think again, I mean you look at the guys that
we brought in. We we've got guys around them that
can score the basketball. The Gloomy can score the ball.
Jordan Pope, over the course of his two years uh
and playing college basketball, can score the ball. He's seventeen
points a game last year in Margan State. Uh. You know,
Treymont sixteen points a game, you know, Uh, Jason Kent

(08:30):
and both Julian or double figure scores. Again, I'm not
as concerned as you guys are. I think we'll continue
to get better offensively as the season goes, and guys
get for me with the way we want to play
and how we do things.

Speaker 7 (08:45):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (08:45):
But but again I think it's just you know, you know,
evolution of your team and evolving you know, from an
offensive standpoint. You know, Jordan Pope's played in a different
system for two years. You know, he's learning and to
find his footing on how how he puts his impact
on on the game. Right now with a new team

(09:08):
and a new system. I mean again, if I had
a magic one and we can make that happen in
one or two of the first five games, boy, I'd
love to be to do that. It took Max a
little while to get going, uh last season, you know,
So it just takes time. Guys got to get used
to the way we want to play it and the
way we want to do things. We try to play
at a faster pace than than than than what Jordan

(09:30):
played you know at a you know previously, so but
not just him in particular, but everybody's getting used to
playing with each other, and you know that's gonna take
some time. So that's gonna be involved right in front
of your eyes as you as you're watching us play
over the course of the season. So I don't have him,
I don't have a magic formula for you on that one.
But you know, we new Trade coming into the season

(09:51):
could score, but we also feel like other guys around
him can compliment and score as well.

Speaker 7 (09:56):
Hey, Rodney, I know what tremon, You're trying to work
through things and it's brand. But you know, if it
if it's got to a point of it bleeding into
January and conference playing, like, is there a point in
your mind where you would say, Okay, let's try to
red shirt and maybe let's save the year.

Speaker 3 (10:12):
Pray mom. You know, I think I don't think it'll
get to that point, Josh. I think, uh, train the
staff and the people that are working with them, my
specialists that he's seen. Uh, they have a pretty good plan,
uh in terms of, uh, you know, getting them back
at full strength. So you know, we just don't want
to put a timetable on it. I want to make

(10:32):
sure that you know, when we do put it back
out there, he's ready to go at full slate. So
I think, uh, I think of the year. I don't
I don't foresee it being that long of a period,
but you know, we don't want to see a definite time.

Speaker 8 (10:45):
Thank you, hey, coach, you touched on it. Just a
little while ago. But what do you think of Jordan's
shooting the other night? I mean, I know, statistically he's
better than what you know, one game he showed what'd
you think of him? And then on the also too,
should Julian have taken a few more shots when when
he was out there?

Speaker 3 (11:06):
You know, I think again, you know, you know, Jordan Polchs,
the guy that scored the ball over two years at
Argus State are a pretty good clip. He's a guy
that will be one of our better shooters all season alone.
I think again, he's he's uh, he's learning to play
with the pace every day that we want to play with,
you know, from the point guard spot. You know, but

(11:27):
he's a guy that could play off the ball as well.
And again, it just it takes time, man, Max, Max Aismis,
Max Asmith just want to I have no idea what
that is going on right now? Max Aismiths, uh three
thousand point score. And it took him a while to

(11:47):
get going a little bit, man, Maxwell's going right off
the bat in the first five, six, seven ball games.
It took him a while to get used to playing
the way we want to play. And then it wasn't
even into conference play that once we put him at
the point guard spot that he really played at the
level I thought that he would play all season long.
So you know, when you talk about a guy that
was a you know what, he played four years or Roberts,

(12:09):
I mean, and one of the most talented scorers of
all time in college basketball. So it just doesn't happen
overnight for guys like that, you know. I think again,
you know, and even when Trey Mont comes back, it's
gonna take some time getting him back in the flow
away he was going. He was playing really well. Prought
him getting injured, but he missed about eight practices before that,

(12:30):
you know, with another injury. So you know, it just
takes time. Man, it takes time. I wish it was
perfect right now. It's not gonna be perfect right now.
But that's why this team still has a ceiling, I think,
both officusily and defensively to get to the level that
we want. But I think Jordan Both's gonna shoot the
ball fine. I think he's gonna you know, have a
breakout point and some born as well, and and uh,

(12:54):
you know, he's done in his whole career, so we
expect him to do it over the course of the
season as well, and I think you you works really
hard on his shooting, and all of our guys put
a lot of time you know, they're shooting, you know
and everything. But again, I'm more concerned about the defense
than I am the office, to be honest, at this point,
I want our defense to be better than what we

(13:14):
showed the other night. You know, we didn't come up
with fifty to fifty balls that we have to get
and we have to be a scrappy, hot plan team
all offense that get better as the season goes.

Speaker 4 (13:25):
Hey, coach, how you doing, man? They might Hey, just
wanted to talk about the assists to turn over ratio. Obviously,
in the beginning of the season, you're gonna have guys
trying to cut. You got guys trying to make some moves,
but one of the things you did do was turn
them over a lot defensively. What are some of the
things that you're looking for in your team as far

(13:46):
as being able to take care of the ball, because
over the past couple of years, they've turned the ball
over more than they did before.

Speaker 3 (13:53):
We've gotten better. I think each strimmage, each competition we've
had I think, you know, we started twenty plus turnover
in the first game. You got to saw that game
for twenty one turnovers. We went to the next ball
game and I believe we had right at about ten turnovers,
almost nine turnovers. I think the other night we were
fifteen and nine, you know, fifteen assists, nine turnovers the

(14:15):
other night, if I'm not mistaken, but I thought we
did a pretty decent job taking care of the basketball.
And you can live with this time of year basketball turnovers.
You know, when you say a basketball turnover where guys
trying to make a really good basketball play and the ball,
you know, gets turned over. You're not gonna play a
perfect game right now in that regards, but you try

(14:37):
to eliminate the ones that you know, a low level turnovers,
the ones where you have control where you know you
really didn't need to turn the ball over that juncture.
But I thought we did a pretty good job of
taking care of the ball of the night. I mean,
our goal is to try to have eighteen and twenty
assists in every game, you know, and you know the
other night we have fifteen, So you know, if we
if we're getting up in the eighteen and twenty range.

(15:00):
Then then we're doing a great job of sharing that ball,
and that ball is getting a chance to move, uh,
and it's getting to move a chance to move side
to side. Early in our journey, like last year and
even the previous year, you know, we can get to
that first side. We got to learn to get that
ball to the second and third side. And but that
just takes time. It takes time with the new team
trusting that process and UH and giving an offense a

(15:24):
chance to work and make the defense work a little bit.
You know, I think I'll say again too. You know,
with this team having experienced adversity for the first time,
we had probably about four or five possessions uh, you
know in the first half of that game where they
got a little bit of separation before we closed it.
Uh in the in the in the end of that

(15:44):
first half, with with with really good defensive possessions, but again,
we were shooting too fast, we were moving the ball
and and guys were taking shots trying to get it
all back because we really hadn't been in that situation before.
You know, now you want your team to be to
play through some of that, and they got to learn
how to work the game. Hey, if I've taken one
or two shots from the perimeter and we haven't gotten

(16:05):
that ball to the paint, we've got to try to
execute and get that ball to the paint and something
on a fashion two foot play with the drive, put
it in the post with the post feed, or at
some point coach is just gonna have to call the
play that he wants to run and he'll get the
shot that he wants. I don't want robots. I don't
want to have to do that. I want to let
our guys play a little bit and let them learn

(16:27):
what's a good shot, what's a good possession, what's not
a good possession. But again, that's all growing paints you
have early in the season where they learn to work
the game. Hey, we came down a possession or two
and we turned it over. We can't turn it over
there the next time down. This next time down, we
got to earn a basket. We got to put pressure
on the basket and get get a basket on our terms.

(16:49):
But that's again, you know, just working the game and
learning to work the game, you know. So we watched
those consecutive possessions. You know, I don't want to sit
there and joystick and have to call a play every
time down the floor. No one wants to play that way.
Recruits don't want to play that way. So you have
to give guys an opportunity to grow and learn to
play through flow, you know, and understand what the good

(17:12):
shot was not a good shot? Kay? And what is
the ebb and flow of the game right now? You
know what's gotten us where we are right now. Our
defense is given us an opportunity to score right now. Okay,
So you know it's just again working through those nuances
of the game.

Speaker 9 (17:27):
Coach Terry good afternoon, tell us about Caden Cedric. He played,
He bawled out, planning his feet, taking the offensive fouls.
In your eyes, how did he do he? It looked
like he was playing with no pain, confidence and just
owning that court. Can you talk about the Kaden?

Speaker 3 (17:52):
Yeah, Terry, I thought Caden gave us, you know, gave
us really what we've kind of expected from him this year,
you know, and he's done in all three contests. He's
been a double figure scorer. I think the only other
thing he can get to the double figure rebounds for us.
But a lot of times when he's not getting rebounds.
He's keeping his man from getting the rebounds. So you know,
he's done a great job of really being physical on

(18:14):
his blockouts, a lot like what we saw when we
recruit him from Virginia prior to having those shoulder issues
and everything. So you know, he's worked really hard on
his low post game. He's worked really hard on shooting
threes as well. So you look out there and you
see him taking the three. We've challenged him to making
one three a game, which again allows you know, us
to stretch the defense. When you have a big that

(18:36):
can stretch the floor, he's more than capable of doing that.
I think he took one early in the first half
in the last ball game, but it was in that
sequence of where we were taking five straight jump shots
without putting pressure on the basket or getting a paint touch,
without getting without getting the you know, instead of just

(18:57):
taking the first side three. But but he's a guy
that again to your point, I think he he gave
us really good rim protection. I thought he uh. I
thought he did a great job of running the floor uh.
And I thought he did a really good job of
when given opportunities to scoring the post, he tried to
score in the post force, but he too will be
a guy I think, oh, season alone will get better

(19:18):
and better.

Speaker 10 (19:19):
Yeah, Rodney, I guess you'll be asking for a magic
one for Christmas. I guess, uh one moving around? Yeah, exactly.
I'm curious about the leadership on your team and in
the locker room and if you heard any voices speaking out,
you know, as potentially good leaders, you know, after the
loss on Monday night.

Speaker 3 (19:40):
I mean I think I think again too, I think
that that's a work in progress. Anytime you talk about
as similarly ten you guys with without without a leader
coming back from the previous team as well, you know
that's gonna evolve over over the course of the season
as well. Good a young player like Trey John emerging

(20:01):
and be a leader. You know, he could be one
of our leaders and one of our guys that that
communicates on the floor with other teammates. They have guys
that had a basketball significant amount of time take on
a take on some ownership in terms of leadership as well.
So that could that be a Pope, Could that be
a Larry? It could be you know, one of those

(20:22):
two guys. You know, Arthur Calum is a senior, you know,
you know, Jason Kinson senior, Kayden Cedric senior, you know,
those guys understanding the urgencies you have to play with
this time of year, you know. But but again, we
played a quality opponent. I mean, we played a team
that had older players. They had a little bit of
continuity they had they had Thwart and back. It's like

(20:43):
having Quinny years back for us for quarterback. You know,
it takes time, you know, you we don't have the
continuity you know of having guys back from last year.
So you know, we're we're gonna be a work in progress.
But I will say this, over the two games prior
to the last game, and we played all big boy
games to this point right now, guys up working their
way through getting for me with one another, and uh

(21:07):
and I think they're getting better. I think, uh, you know,
even even in the game the other night, I thought
there were times that we battled through adversity and uh
uh continue to show some bite. We got to still
just tighten up, you know, more so than on the
offensive end. We got to tighten up, you know, our
ownership on the defensive end of the floor and really
want to play really hard on that end of the floor.

(21:28):
And I think the last couple of days of practice
we worked really hard on trying to get back to
the base of the garden, really hard defensively.

Speaker 1 (21:36):
Ronnie, you since you've been here, you've had Marcus, You've
had Jabbari, you know Max, even Tyreee. Those are guys
who got the ball a lot at their previous stops,
came here, took different roles, don't want to say diminished,
but different. So when you work with Jordan, do you
try to show him examples from those guys as to
how it makes it, how it could work within y'all system,

(21:58):
while still you know we're tainting his scoring abilities.

Speaker 3 (22:02):
No, for sure, he's definitely seen some of those edits already.
And uh of those guys in particular, Uh, you know Max.
You know on how Max prayed at his previous institution
and then came here and had to really kind of
adjust and and and adapt and and and I thought
he did a nice job of that over the course
of the last season. But it didn't happen overnight. It

(22:24):
didn't happen in the first you know, few ball games.
It took him a while. Uh, even with Max Maxifield
comfort on some of the things that that we were doing.
UH and and UH you know the same thing with
Jordan's You know, Jordan's one of those guys that UH
has played off the ball, he's played with the ball,
and you know, you know at at UH at August State,
he was asked to carry a lot of the scoring low.

(22:46):
I think, you know, in his mind and coming here,
I think he you know, embraced knowing that we still
need him to be a scoring threat, but also be
a guy that shows people that for next level opportunities,
that he could run a team, that he could be
a guy that you know, has point guard qualities that
that that helps lead the team. So, you know, I

(23:08):
think there was a win win in regards to him
coming here. And I think at the end of the day,
as he's selling in and he finds his way and
he gets his footing on him a little bit in
terms of in terms of the way we play and
the guys you have around him right now, I think
he's gonna be better for it.

Speaker 9 (23:26):
Hey, RT, you talk about continuity.

Speaker 11 (23:28):
You get three games in a little over a week
at home starting tomorrow.

Speaker 9 (23:32):
How important are the games?

Speaker 11 (23:33):
I know you work in practice, but you know, to
get that continuity in a forty minute game in front
of your home fans.

Speaker 3 (23:40):
I think it's really important. I think again for us,
and you know, so much of us is about carrier
right now. We spend a lot of time in practice,
but then you've got to carry over to the games.
But but again, we go into every game. Establishes a
great job with the preparation piece. Uh So, so we
go into every game, you know, just asking our guys
to play extremely hard on defense, play extremely hard on

(24:03):
the floor at all times, and and and and we'll
let offense come to us. You know, we're not coming
out thinking the other way around that we're gonna come
out and we're gonna be this this office and Juggernut team.
We gotta come out and with the mindset that we're
gonna guard, we're gonna play physical, we're gonna try to
rebound the basketball. We're gonna try to be the first
to the floor. That's the mentality that we're gonna try

(24:23):
to have. We'll figure out the scoring part. We still
want to try to get some offense off our defense,
but we want to have some good carryover, uh to
to obviously getting a chance to play here at home.
So you know, we're excited about about our upcoming competition
that we have Houston Christian. They'll come in and they'll
push the ball, Allene Fasting transition. They'll challenge our transition defense. UH,

(24:46):
they'll challenge our shooter defense, and they'll challenge putting pressure
