Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's a Thursday, a little satellite interference there. Glad to
have you with you, Glad to be with you, and
glad to have you with us on the program this
afternoon here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Yeah, it's called The Craig Way Show, and that's my name.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
But it's the show for you and for all of us,
and glad to have you with us today on a Thursday,
as we kind of head down the stretch of the
week to get ready for the weekend coming up. The
US includes the producer of the program, Cameron D.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Parker.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
The D on the birth certificate is the first letter
in his middle name, Dallas, named for his dad's favorite
pro football team, which has become his although he has
been less enamored with him over time. But I would
imagine some of that. I have a theory on this.
(00:58):
You've kind of softened on your approach a little bit,
mellowed on your approach on the Cowboys a little bit,
simply because in the last two calendar years you have
two other world championships to celebrate out of your favorite teams,
and the third one even managed to go pretty deep
(01:19):
into the playoffs. So with the Rangers winning a World
Series two years ago, and with and with the Oklahoma
City Thunder just having won the newly minted NBA champions
you can deal with the Cowboys slings and arrows a little.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
Better than in the past. Am I right?
Speaker 3 (01:34):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (01:34):
And good afternoon, Craig, Good afternoon listeners for sure. And
also a team that hasn't won a national championship since
two thousand and five but has been contending has been
Texas Football. So your Sundays are a little bit easier
when the team you kind of worked for, and also
the team that you went to college for and the
team that you root for on Saturdays wins on Saturdays
(01:55):
and is contending, and then it makes someday a little
bit easier. Tell you know what, I'm okay not watching
the Cowboys, but hey what, Craig. If number eleven MICHAEH.
Parsons has not been re signed by week one, I'm
going back checking out and checking out again. I'm sorry Schottenheimer.
By the way, that was Shottenheimer, though, let's go. I'm
glad it wasn't an f bom or any other bad language.
(02:17):
It worked out timely. But if it's other thing against
Schtenheimer or Dak Prescott. But the Cowboys have no chance,
no chance at all to be any good without the
best defensive player on the team playing.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
So uh, for reasons of complete transparency, Uh, yesterday when
we were running some Brian Schottenheimer sound shot, he let
fly with U with a word that can't be used
on or can't be aired on the air. So camera
was tricking quick enough on the trigger finger to hit
(02:50):
the dump button so that it didn't slap through when
at first we both kind of startled versus I.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
Said, did he say? And then he went.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
It is Casey studdering on the air today? Yeah, yeah, right, yeah,
that kind of thing. So, but we do have some
more from Shoddy. We'll hear from him. We'll hear some
more from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkisian. The players had
there were there were a few players made available for
a player media availability. If we get a chance to
(03:20):
generate that content to you, we will do that during
the course of the program. We do have inconceivable coming
up this hour, in the four o'clock hour, I just
a little.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
While ago, less than.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
Less than certainly less than three hours, les less than
two hours ago, I sat down with the brand new
had basketball coach at the University of taxsas Sean Miller,
and we went through some of the things since the
last conversation we had with him on the air was
(03:58):
his introductory news conference. He did that and then came
over and sat down with me and we did about
ten minutes there. We have a little a little longer
conversation with him now that he has been on the
job for a few months, and we address everything from
roster construction to what he likes identically ideally in his
(04:22):
rotation to go with players who are out injured. He's
got a couple of international players who have yet to
enroll but will soon. So we'll have all of that
and more from Sean Miller coming up in the four
o'clock hour. So we'll look forward to bringing that to
you as well. And this being Thursday, we of course
(04:50):
getting close toward the end of the week, and so
it is it is meaning that, of course, when we
get to Friday. In the summertime, we've been doing the
music survey and we've had all manner and variety of
people taking the music survey from Cameron and Mike Harge
and Mark Henry Roger Wallace of our k xaed I
(05:14):
did the music survey alongside my wife Linda.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
Last Friday.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
We both had our own individual music surveys. We're going
back inside the building, so to speak, with tomorrow's music
survey with a couple of our dedicated employees. How would
you describe each of the two employees because they they're
(05:40):
in some ways, I think they're vastly different, yet they're
both quite efficient in their own way.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
Well, neither really work in our department.
Speaker 4 (05:53):
Yeah, so they're not affiliated with I mean they technically
they help out with the zone from time to time.
But the who coming on? So with Chip Jellison who
The software we use that helps broadcast our show is
designed by this man, So he's an engineer. So he's
a lot smarter than me. I'll just go ahead and
(06:13):
say that. But usually when we have any issues, Chip
is the one that I go to now I've found
out recently besides for his love of Coke zero, he
also has a big love of music and used to
play in bands.
Speaker 5 (06:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
See this really surprised me when you when you told
me this, because if we had said pick out a
couple of people out of the building to do the
music survey. I have to admit to you that Chip
probably would not have been near the top of the
list for me. I wouldn't have because I wouldn't have
expected him to be that way.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Just goes to show you know when you.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
Don't know this book by its cover.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
So, and he actually sent me pictures of him back
in the I think the seventies eighties with his his
hair metal wow hairdo and stuff. So I'm excited for that.
And Tone who works in our promotion staff which handles
a lot of social media, which handles a lot of
promotions on the ticketing side for our other stations cave At,
FM ninety six to seven, KISS ninety seven to five,
(07:13):
ALL one, O three one, Austin's eighty stations. He do
case this, case two. And also you'll see him out
there on game day long wrn's game day. He was
helped driving the fan helping us at up equipment, so
he kind of he does all the dirty work.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
And by the way, he's the one who came up
with the contest buzzward names when we were giving away
tickets to things like Country Was It was a Jason
Aldean where he had the where they where we have
a different keyword every day for the five days of
the week, and the one he had that week was
Cameron Parker loves country music.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
That's that.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
Those were the that he came up with that.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
Yeah, he has a little sense of humor.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
And of course he plays in a band two Whisk,
that travels across every city in Texas and performs. So
two n tastes of music, but two guys that really
really love music, which I'm always you know, I love
to discuss music week because they they have a different
framework for it, but also they know a lot more
about it than I do. So I'm looking forward to
(08:12):
it because I'm gonna learn something new. I already know
who will be the artist that Chip hates and.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
I was realized. I was shocked.
Speaker 4 (08:20):
Oh good, He's someone that my dad has seen perform
live many times.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
Wow.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
Okay, I'm guessing you may have. You may have seen
once or twice.
Speaker 4 (08:29):
Okay, I know if you worked their tours because his
music wasn't you know, kind of in that realm threshold. Yeah,
of rock and roll, heavy rock, although he is in
rock and roll. So I'm looking I'm looking forward.
Speaker 1 (08:40):
To that okay, all right, So that's gonna be in
the three o'clock hour tomorrow afternoon as we continue with
the music survey here in the summertime.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
So uh, that's coming up.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
And for those of you who still haven't heard us
do this and wonder what other are they talking about,
we'll explain it all tomorrow what the music survey is
and how revelatory it can be about a person, how
it can reveal quite a bit about the person as
well as just their taste of music.
Speaker 4 (09:06):
And we've had some some people Craig comment like, hey,
I can't find this in the podcast page. The reasoning
behind that we don't own the music.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
We don't.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
Unfortunately, we do not own the music to God's Plan
by Drake. We don't own the music to Little River Bands.
So if we post it on our podcast, then they
can sue us. So that's why. So the best way
to listen to it it is.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
We're allowed to do it. We're allowed to do it live.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
In the moment.
Speaker 4 (09:29):
Yes, so listen live or check out the live stream
on YouTube that is still posted that does not get
taken down, So you can go back and not only
listen Craig, but you can watch and get the reactions,
the physical reactions of you or or Linda as in
tomorrow's case, so chipping Antones.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
So so that's that's how you can get it on that.
And Cameron's really good at also posting the questions the
Q and A right what we've done with that, so
we can post it as well too, so it'll be
posted on that. But so tomorrow, yes, for opposite ends
of the spectrum, antone like them uh and Chip Jellison
will do the music survey, so we'll find out what
(10:09):
their tastes are on all of that. Okay, coming up, well,
we're gonna hear some more from Brian Schottenheimer, so we'll
do that, and the Cowboys head coaching. We're also going
to hear more from Long Orange's head coach, Steve Sarkisian,
so we've got we've got that coming up. As always,
(10:31):
we're more than happy to take your questions, your thoughts,
your comments. You need only textas and the way you
text the program is you text the word Texas followed
by your question or comment and you text it to
eight one five three zero, So you text the word Texas,
then your question or comment to eight one five three
(10:53):
zero standard messaging and data rates may apply. You may
be wanting to comment on the story that I'm going
to get to in a moment about arch Man, So
we're gonna we'll tell you a couple of from a
couple of different perspectives on some things with regard to
arch So.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
We'll have that.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
Also, we will give away two more copies of Dave
Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, and we'll do that in the
three o'clock hour. And the way you have an opportunity
to win a magazine is to access us via the
talkback feature. It's real easy, it's really easy. It's a
(11:29):
lot easier than just trying to call the radio station
and hoping you're a random caller number whatever eleven or whatever.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
To win.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
You have much you have a much better shot. Yes,
there is some expediency involved, but there's got to be
some accuracy in terms of your response. So the way
that works is I will ask a question and clearly,
if you know the answer the question, here's how you respond.
Hopefully you already have the iHeartRadio app downloaded on your
(11:59):
small If you don't, it's real easy, it's free. There's
no obligations or anything like that. All you do is
you go to your app store or wherever you get
your apps, download to your phone and just enter iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
It'll pop up. You download it.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
Then when you pop up the app, as all apps do,
they have a little magnifying glass or search window. All
you have to do is put in AM thirteen under
the zone. It pops right up, and then you'll see
when it pops up. There's two buttons there. There's a
little white one that's like a triangle shape. That's to
listen to whatever is going on the air at the time.
But there's another button. It's a little red one with
(12:39):
a white microphone. That's the key. You press that button,
it activates our talkback feature, and then you just leave
us a message. It's not live, it's not immediately going
on the air. It's a recording. But you leave us
a message with the answer to the question, and you'll say,
as listen to Craig Way Show, that's for the Dave
Campbell's Texas Football, the answer is blah blah blah, And like,
(13:02):
for example, a couple of days ago, the question was
how many teams were in the Big Twelve Conference at
the time that Texas and Oklahoma announced their intention to
leave for the SEC The answer was ten, and the
first two people to respond to that on the talkback
picked up in one copies of the magazine. Yesterday's question
(13:24):
was what is the first home game? The opponent for
the first home game for Texas? The answer, you know what, right, Kim?
You know the first opponent for Texas at home?
Speaker 3 (13:37):
Okay?
Speaker 1 (13:38):
Yeah, because we did it yesterdayday state San Jose State.
So the first two people to correctly reach us via
the talkback feature and say the answer is San Jose State,
they won copies of the magazine. That's how easy it is,
and they'll be a relatively easy question today, but it
requires a couple of things, a little bit of expediency,
but just reaching us via the time back feature in
(14:00):
giving us the answer. So we've only got two more
days of this today and tomorrow that we're giving away
copies of the magazine.
Speaker 2 (14:06):
We've been doing it for.
Speaker 1 (14:06):
Three weeks, so this is it today and tomorrow on
that so you'll have a chance to do that in
the three o'clock hour and again in the four o'clock hour.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
I sit down. We literally did sit down in his office.
Speaker 1 (14:18):
Just a little while ago, the brand new men's basketball
coach at Texas, Sean Miller and I with a conversation.
So we've got that. We'll get to that, and we'll
get to your questions on the text line and a
lot more. Up next, we'll hear from Brian Schottenheimer and
this story about Arch Manning. We'll get to that when
we continue on thirteen under the Zone.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
Here on a Thursday afternoon. Glad to have you with us.
Speaker 1 (14:57):
Here on thirteen hundred of the Zone, joined by the
producer Cameron Parker. We're with you up until five o'clock
this afternoon. As I mentioned, we're more than happy to
take your questions, your thoughts, your comments via the text line,
(15:19):
like for example, yesterday when I was talking about Texas
playing Duke, and they opened the season with Duke on Tuesday,
November fourth, So that'll be an awful lot of fun
playing them in Charlotte, North Carolina. Cameron's all excited because
he gets to go back to his hometown again. You
(15:40):
were pretty excited. We didn't, you know, when we were
there for the NC Tournament a couple of years ago.
Speaker 3 (15:44):
We didn't.
Speaker 1 (15:45):
Eddie and I didn't see that much of you. You
just kind of disappeared into the woodwork because you were
back home.
Speaker 4 (15:49):
It was fun, you know. I love going back home
to Charlotte. I don't have too much. I don't really
have any family in Charlete anymore, but I still have
you know, old friends and stuff, and it's become a
really cool city to staying out.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
And plus there was boat Jangles.
Speaker 4 (16:03):
There was and I had a door dash to my
hotel room a few times. And the same thing will
be happening this trip. Although we're all for the tournament,
we were there a little bit longer. Yes, just of course.
We flew in two days before the first game, knocked
off Colorado State and then lost to Tennessee. But remember,
in terms of our great stories of traveling, we did
(16:24):
not make it because the flight attendant and invertally opened
up the uh slide the emergency slot she slide and
it's not that they can just you know, stuff.
Speaker 6 (16:34):
It all back in.
Speaker 2 (16:37):
To get wait to wait on another we had to
wait on another.
Speaker 3 (16:39):
Planet and extra night in Charlotte.
Speaker 1 (16:41):
Yeah, yeah, it was uh yeah, I totally forgot about that.
Had so many weird things happened, would travel with the
team travel. There was a time that Texas women's basketball
had reached the Elite eight and was playing Yukon in Bridgeport, Connecticut,
(17:01):
basically in their backyard, kind of like playing Duke and Charlotte,
and Texas lost in that in that Elite eight game,
and the team charter was to have left from Westchester
County Airport basically White Planes, New York, because it was
it was closer from Bridgeport, Connecticut to go there than
(17:24):
it was to go like all the way up to
Hartford or something.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
It's like an extra hour if you went up there.
Speaker 1 (17:29):
So we were supposed to go out of there, and
the team was flying in and out of there, and
I had a rental car to return, so I was
going to drop off the rental car and then meet
the team bus when I came in there.
Speaker 2 (17:40):
And then when I got.
Speaker 1 (17:41):
There, I saw the flight crew in there talking and
I heard them say, there's no way we're taking off
out of this airport. That's the worst. So I let
the ops director. Angelo Ortego was the AO was the
ops director at the time. I texted her, so he goes, yeah,
we're starting to hear the same thing.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
We'll see when you.
Speaker 1 (18:02):
We're gonna we're bringing the bus there first and we'll
figure out what we're gonna do. We got there and
they said, well, we think we might be able to
take off from JFK. So we all got on the
bus and then it was like an hour and a
half drive down into New York, going down through Manhattan,
all this stuff all the way to JFK, and we
basically had the bus parked on the opposite side of
(18:24):
the airport where the swamps are there on the other
side of JFK. And I looked around and I said
to somebody, you know, this is like a scene out
of The Sopranos or something, or The Godfather. You know,
there have been some lives taken in the in this
vicinity somewhere. We ended up not being able to fly
out because the wind conditions were too winning. We ended
up going to a hotel by LaGuardia Airport UH and
(18:50):
we had not only the team with us and administrators,
we had the basketball PEP Band, Texas Chair, Texas Palm.
So we were all on one bus and then we
had slept for about four or five hours, got up.
They fed everybody at breakfast real quick, and then we
went back the JFK and then went home. So yeah,
I'm kind of used to some of these weird things
(19:11):
happening on some of that. So anyway, let's move forward
and h I want to we'll hear from us some
more from Ryan Schottneimer, the Cowboys head coach, on the
progress of practice.
Speaker 7 (19:28):
Yesterday, kind of weed towards your decision on starters of
the preseasons.
Speaker 2 (19:32):
That's still progress, it's still work in progress.
Speaker 8 (19:34):
Again, well, you know, there'll be a handful of guys
that don't play, but you know, I would say there'll
be some guys that play throughout the preseason.
Speaker 2 (19:40):
Don't just look at it with just the Rams.
Speaker 8 (19:42):
You know, we have a number of snaps we're trying
to get for certain guys throughout the entire preseason. So
I wouldn't read into it, Oh, who's playing against the Rams,
who's playing against you know, Baltimore Atlanta. There's more of
a number, okay, in these two or three games. How
many snaps do we want for this guy? And those
numbers can change. That's why again, when we look at it,
(20:02):
you know, I'll share it maybe later in the week,
you know, but for the most part, you know, those
numbers are very flexible.
Speaker 7 (20:08):
Garret Bodell, CBA supports Brian, you talked about game planning
and keep it basic when you're seven iron. How different
is game planning entering a preseason game keeping it seven
iron versus regular season.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
And doing all that.
Speaker 8 (20:23):
I mean, it's obviously extremely different because you know, you
look at your call sheet and you're like, Okay, well,
we're not showing this.
Speaker 2 (20:30):
It's amazing to me.
Speaker 8 (20:31):
If you're looking at fifty passes, you're going, okay, well
we'll show those twelve, and you're like, there's thirty eight
of them. You know, like, we're not showing these thirty
eight plays, and you're like, no, we show them every
day in practice, so we don't need to show them
to the world. You know, Vic Fangio probably has people
out here with cameras watching our practice right now, you know.
Speaker 3 (20:48):
I mean, like that's.
Speaker 8 (20:49):
Part of the deal. But yeah, to me, it's very different.
You know, like, we knew we were getting three four work.
We needed three four work. We wanted it. You know,
I think the Rams are one of the best duo
running teams in the league. Their toss crack games are great.
You know, so there's things we can learn. I mean
the big run that they hit, you know, they they
got the edge on us. We didn't do a great
(21:09):
job hopping the crack block, which is the first block,
and then we went underneath a couple of blocks and
that's a recipe for disaster in the run game. But
for the most parts, you know, like I said, you
linebackers are playing downhill and we're not tackling.
Speaker 2 (21:21):
So but it's very, very different.
Speaker 8 (21:23):
It's very it's it's it's much quicker when you're not
showing your stuff.
Speaker 1 (21:27):
Sure, kind of after watching yesterday and like it's really
just evaluating practice up to this point.
Speaker 3 (21:36):
What do you feel you highlight.
Speaker 9 (21:37):
The linebackers, but what do you feel like is the
biggest point of them is for you?
Speaker 10 (21:41):
For one light comes in so on.
Speaker 8 (21:44):
I think main thing would be that just the overall
pad level, you know, the overall pad level. The fits
flu says it all the time. When you guys get
a chance to talk to him, he'll say it again.
Speaker 2 (21:52):
No house guests.
Speaker 8 (21:53):
You know, when you're playing a team like really us
and like the rams, when you're in cut splits and
your crack safeties, the corners have a huge piece of
the run fit because when the receiver goes to block
the safety who's down tight, the corner's got to close
the distance. And we did a really good job of
that yesterday. There's some fundamental things we need to clean
up with keeping your outside foot up and playing with
(22:14):
great extension and things like that. But again, we're not tackling.
So it's like, oh, did Kyer make that play? Yeah,
he probably did, but you know, we're not tackling guys
to the ground. But just the symphony is the best
word I can think of right now on a little
sleep of the run game stuff, you know, both running
the football, blocking scheme wise, and then fitting the runs
(22:35):
and all that stuff.
Speaker 2 (22:36):
It takes.
Speaker 8 (22:38):
It takes a lot of orchestration and time and different
than when you throw a ball up to an elite
receiver on either side they make a play. Not that
that doesn't take timing, it does. But sometimes dudes just
their dudes.
Speaker 1 (22:51):
Dudes just are dudes. Isn't that an iHeart podcast with
Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman Dudes on dudes, dude due,
there's yes, Jess, I mean yeah, we'll find out.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
Jules, Yeah, on that.
Speaker 4 (23:09):
Do you think Schottenheimer is a dude's dude or a
dude's dude. That's that's the question, isn't it. We need
the cronk and element that figure that out.
Speaker 1 (23:16):
Yeah, all right, shot n Eyber talking about the team
coming off of that practice, slashcrimmage whatever, the Rams, that
the Rams kind of had the better of them on
in a lot of the areas. They broke a big run,
They ran the ball well on them. They prevented the
Cowboys from running the ball much. But but Schattennayber pointed out,
(23:36):
didn't so much and they won't show much Saturday night
when the two teams have a preseason game at SOFI Stadium,
the first preseason game that which is at six o'clock
Texas time on Saturday night.
Speaker 2 (23:47):
So anyway, that's that's where that is.
Speaker 4 (23:50):
You're pretty fired up about the Rams looking good in
the scrimmage against the Cowboys.
Speaker 1 (23:54):
I'm encouraged. There's a lot. I mean, you know, Matt Stafford,
Matthew Stafford didn't play. Uh, they had limited stuff front
with who is your quarterback? Bentet Stinson Stetson Bennett was
one of them and then the other one who is
the other one that they used?
Speaker 2 (24:14):
Oh, it's wait a minute, hold on, I want to.
Speaker 4 (24:18):
Make sure I don't remember who the quarterbacks are on
the Rams. Well, last year, no, isn't it.
Speaker 1 (24:25):
Jimmy Grappolo, Yeah, Jimmy g did last year's was there, and.
Speaker 2 (24:34):
You know he's he What he did was he gave you.
Speaker 1 (24:37):
He gave you all of the in the in the
game that he played before the that the Rams did
not use any of their key guys when they'd already
clinched the division.
Speaker 2 (24:52):
It did not give you.
Speaker 1 (24:54):
He did not give you any reason to see otherwise
why you know, why why they didn't need to get
another quarterback other than Stetson Bennet.
Speaker 4 (25:10):
So you have a four string quarterback by the name
of Dresser Win. Yeah, yeah, that's that's a roster guy.
That's a name right there, Dresser Dresser, Yes, sir, Yeah,
that's a from you Martin all right, yeah, yeah, that's yeah.
There's a Hallmark movie based upon him.
Speaker 2 (25:30):
It's funny.
Speaker 1 (25:30):
If you go to the Rams website, they have like
a throwback I guess it's highlights with stuff of when
because because this is a Rams Cowboys game, they've got
throwback photos of the years when these two teams played
and then they they have it the nineteen seventy nine
(25:51):
Divisional playoff game at Texas Stadium. I was a nineteen
year old college student and I was at that game. Wow,
and that was the game the Cowboys covering it or
just as a fans fan was there with other students.
There was about ten of us that got seats on
the twenty yard line.
Speaker 2 (26:08):
We were to buy.
Speaker 1 (26:09):
A friend of mine was big Cowboys fans, like a
good good deal. Well yeah, I mean we got them
like it face value for he got him through wasn't
a website back then. He went to the ticket office
or called and got him and got like ten tickets
like on the twenty yard line right when they went
on sale, because you didn't know for sure, And he
(26:29):
got them about thirty rows up from the field on
the twenty yard line. And we went. And of course
I'm the only Rams fan out of the group. Everybody
else's Cowboy fans.
Speaker 2 (26:38):
But we went.
Speaker 1 (26:39):
But that was the game. It turned out to be
Rogers Tallbox's final game seventy nine. The Cowboys were coming
off back to back Super Bowl appearances. They were definitely
favored to beat the Rams and Vince Ferragamo hit a
couple of big passes, including hitting Billy Wattie over the
middle with a fifty yard touchdown pass with two O
six to go in the game. That turned out to
be the difference in the ball game. But anyway, they
(26:59):
put those highlights up there on that. All right, up
next we have Inconceivable. We'll do that and like I said,
we've got this arch Manning store to get to next
when we continue on thirteen hundred the Zone, second hour
of the program. Here on thirteen hundred of the Zone,
Craig Way, alongside the producer Cameron Parker and I begin
this hour with an apology. The apology one our a
good friend c B who had sent this to me,
(27:23):
linked it on Twitter, and I intended it to be
a prominent.
Speaker 2 (27:31):
Item to.
Speaker 1 (27:35):
Give you details on and Inconceivable, and I had all
these other things and I went right by and didn't
get it. But you know what, this story is worthy
enough of its own. This isn't some crazy thing that
came down from some off the rails pseudo news agency.
(28:00):
This came from ABC A b C News and they're
post on X you know, Twitter goes as follows a
new ice cream flavor inspired by breast milk is drumming
up chatter across the country.
Speaker 2 (28:17):
Did you get a look at that game?
Speaker 3 (28:19):
I saw CB tagas in that.
Speaker 2 (28:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (28:22):
So it's from a company called Freedom Breast Milk ice Cream.
First first response was from a young lady who said, gee,
look at the cup size, you know? Uh So anyway, uh,
that's what the uh the story was about, and there
(28:43):
was something about it.
Speaker 2 (28:44):
On Good Morning America.
Speaker 1 (28:45):
Oddfellows ice Cream Company and Freedom a Baby Product Company
teamed up to make breast milk inspired ice cream in
celebration of and there's there's an endgame on this Freeda
is new two to one manual breast pump And in
case you're wondering, the new flavor doesn't actually have any
(29:07):
breast milk in it. It's made with the standard ice
cream ingredients milk, heavy cream, skim, milk powder, egg yolks,
and sugar, but it also is honey fruit juice and
one standout ingredient, liposomal bovine closstrum. The version in the
(29:28):
Freeda's ice cream is from cowls, but the colostrum is
also present in human breast milk. It supposedly high in
nutrients and antibodies, according to the Center for Disease Control
and Prevention, and according to that company, Freedom, the Breast
Milk ice cream has a sweet and salty flavor and
will be available for a limited time at odd Fellows
(29:51):
at New York ice cream Shop until August. Tent pints
will also be available for shipping Nation and White on
the Freedom website. So you're going to the website, I
try to not for you, right, he got his shipment in.
Speaker 2 (30:09):
Okay, very good. You got a whole rack of it,
did you all right? That's good? Glad you did that
all right?
Speaker 1 (30:17):
Anyway, So yeah, that was It was quite the story
when it when it broke this point, and the naturally,
of course there's uh the usual outrage that that follows,
like this is a news know, it's a feature story.
That's why it was on the deal. Okay, we were
(30:41):
talking about the NFL in the first hour of the program,
and we heard from Ryan shot Nimer, the Cowboys head coach,
and they their joint practices with the Rams and and
they'll have their preseason opener Saturday night at six o'clock
in Los Angeles. Ingle would be exact that, Sofi Stadiu
when they play the Rams and you told me, you
said to me, oh, you must be getting pretty fired
(31:02):
up about the Rams. I said, I'm encouraged some of
the things. One of the things they did is something
that continues to escape Jerry Jones is to lock up
a key player in the contract and they just resign.
They did a three year extension with Kyried Williams, running back,
who's had a good year for them last year. So meanwhile,
(31:23):
can you tell me who's going to be the Cowboys
starting running back?
Speaker 4 (31:27):
Emits Smith, Felix Jones, possibly, I think, well, I mean,
you know, we watched out Jaden Blue to know that.
I don't know if he's at every down running back.
I think he'll be outstanding third down back, third down
running back. He'll be used a lot, probably in passing situations.
Right in terms of, hey, we're just gonna spam inside
(31:50):
zone with him, you know, he wasn't news like that.
That's not who he is as a running back. And
also just you know, be wasting his talent and wasting
a lot of wear and tear. I'm supposed to be
Miles Sanders, but you know, he's been banged up outside
of him. Did we sign Javonte Williams, the former Broncos
running back. I think it's either yeah, So I'm guessing
(32:15):
it'll be Jefonte Williams as the starting running back with
a lot of Jayden Blue, Phil Matha. We drafted the
former Clemson running back, and then they're still duce fond
on the team. Hopefully they'll they'll find out ways to
be able to use him as well. I mean, Schottenheimer's
got the creativity. You know, what can you do with
you know, hey, a split back with like sudden We've
(32:38):
seen with with sark run all the time. You have fun,
you have Jayden Blue in the backfield, you know, get
those guys in space, right, throw in Javonte Williams or
Miles Sanders. So there's the option running up the middle
and next thing you know, you're using those guys in space.
Speaker 3 (32:51):
Leads to big, big games.
Speaker 4 (32:52):
We saw that all throughout the time Steve Sarkisian the
last couple of years. Now, well Shotenheery do something like that.
I don't know the run back you and it definitely
will be a running back by committee, which I think
he's already talked about. But you know, Sanders is already
banged up. Jonathan Williams goes down. Congratulations, film OFFA. You're
now the starting running back for the Dallas Cowboys. You
know this doesn't give you a lot of It doesn't
(33:14):
inspire a lot of hope.
Speaker 1 (33:15):
I'm still seeing the touchdown that the James Blue scored
against A and M in the game there, the second
touchdown and the touchdowns scored against Ohio.
Speaker 2 (33:26):
State in the Cotton Bowl as well.
Speaker 4 (33:28):
I think we had too right and both came right
towards my seats. Is that where it was who ended
the year? Because of course he had the massive touchdown
run against Clemson yep, the big touchdown against A and
M yep, and then two against Ohio State, that's correct.
Did he score any against Arizona State?
Speaker 2 (33:50):
Did or he did not?
Speaker 4 (33:52):
He ended the season on an absolute here in terms
of getting into the end zone.
Speaker 1 (33:56):
He did, he did and was very productive even when
he didn't score touchdowns. As I was talking about earlier,
catching passes out of the backfield and the things that
he did. He finished, He finished on a real uptick
there which increased his value and where the Cowboys were
interested in him. And now he has a chance maybe
to get some playing time off of that.
Speaker 4 (34:18):
He was limited against Arizona State, but five receptions for
fifty nine yards two touchdowns against Ohio State, one hundred
and forty six rushing yards and two touchdowns against Clemson,
and two receptions for thirty one yards and against A
and M had that seven yard touchdown pass Against Kentucky
he ran for ninety six yards in a touchdown. So
his last the last two months of the season for
(34:39):
Jaden Blue, I think really elevated his draft stock.
Speaker 1 (34:42):
Well, hope things continue to go well for him. Okay,
I'm just asking to go along with the fantasy for
a moment. Okay, let's just say that Jerry Jones gets
Michael Parsons signed before the season opener. He will It'll
be like Monday, Okay, good, and then they find a
(35:05):
way to beat the Eagles. Oh gosh, first game. I said,
go along with the fantasy for a moment. Let's just say,
you never know early in the NFL season, the things
that happened. History teaches us that a lot of you know,
favorite teams don't come out of the box looking that
great in the first game of the year. But let's
say they do. They get off to a good start
(35:26):
like that, They've got Mica in there and he's making
a difference, and they've settled in on the running back
and things like that. Would you at that point consider
going to a Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (35:36):
Game, going to a Cowboys.
Speaker 4 (35:39):
Game, going to a Cowboys game, going to even when
they were at the top, which at the top for
me was what twenty sixteen and twenty eighteen, it's just
so expensive to go to a Cowboys Well, toward that end,
I thought you might bring that up. This coming down
(35:59):
from Dove claiming who you know follows the NFL reports
in the NFL, let me lay all this out for
you here, uh he He just tweeted a little while ago.
To watch Okay, to watch the entire NFL season on television,
(36:23):
To watch the entire NFL season on television, it will
cost fans over one thousand dollars a game a year.
Excuse me, over one thousand dollars a year if you
were to watch, in other words, every game that would
be available every and so the salt breaks down. The ESPN,
(36:46):
d C, DTC would be thirty dollars a month, Amazon
Prime fifteen dollars a month. Peacock twelve dollars a month.
Speaker 2 (36:59):
Now we're member.
Speaker 1 (37:01):
Prime and Peacock and Paramounts is another twelve dollars per month.
Fox one twenty dollars per month, from one, Netflix twenty
three dollars per month. All of these are like selected ones.
You know, a game of the week, a couple of games.
Then you have NFL Sunday Ticket, which is that one
(37:22):
time cost of four hundred and eighty bucks. That's if
you already have YouTube TV and you subscribe. So if
you add all of that up in order to have
access to I think those are the keywords there.
Speaker 2 (37:36):
Access to being able to watch.
Speaker 1 (37:41):
Any NFL game you want, any one on any given week, primetime,
early window, late afternoon window, holidays to where you basically
have access. And I used to have access to all
this back in the day when it was just Sunday
Ticket and then you were just the other stuff before
the streaming platforms. I could watch any game that I
(38:02):
wanted at certain point. But anyway, now if you factor
in all of those streaming platforms plus the NFL Sunday Ticket,
the exact as they say on the prices rice right,
the exact retail price of your showcase is eleven hundred
and seventy one dollars and sixty four cents. Eleven seventy
(38:25):
one sixty four. Somebody at tweeted, why can't there just
be one NFL app where you can watch all the games?
Because different networks and different streaming services have.
Speaker 2 (38:35):
It paramount obviously.
Speaker 1 (38:40):
You know, for all the grumbling about Amazon Prime, their
numbers were really big.
Speaker 2 (38:45):
Peacock.
Speaker 1 (38:46):
Remember had that playoff game between the Chiefs and the
Dolphins and the frigid weather in Kansas City. You and
I were watching it on the bus with a basketball
team in West Virginia headed for the airport. They get
their game. You know, Netflix is twenty three dollars a month.
(39:06):
The Sunday ticket is four hundred and eighty bucks. It's
a one time shot. But you already have to have
or you have to be able to subscribe to YouTube
TV in order to make you eligible to get that.
Speaker 2 (39:18):
So it adds up.
Speaker 1 (39:19):
To eleven hundred and seventy one dollars and sixty four
cents for the season to do that. So a lot
of people are saying, ah, yeah, I use a fire stick,
or I use this, or I use that.
Speaker 2 (39:31):
Try to but that's going to be hit and miss
on some of that stuff.
Speaker 4 (39:35):
Looking at the Cowboys schedules. So if you're a Cowboys fan, yeah,
god speed to all of us here to be able
to watch every single Cowboy game.
Speaker 3 (39:44):
Obviously.
Speaker 4 (39:45):
I mean, if you live in you know where they're
on going to be on local TV. It's different, but
it's say you live in Washington, you'll need the Sunday ticket,
but also you'll need Paramount Plus to be able to
watch the Chief Scheme on Thanksgiving. You'll need Netflix to
watch the Commander's game on Christmas Day, and then you'll
need Amazon Prime to watch and play Detroit on Thursday
(40:06):
Night Football, and then also you'll need I'm guessing, is
has Monday Night Football moved to ABC now or is
it still strictly yes? Because I'm seeing ABC slash ESPN
for their two Monday Night Football. Well, they're under the
same window. So when I was growing up, you can
only watch monight football if you had you had cable,
and now it's soybe you feel old.
Speaker 1 (40:28):
I mean I can remember when I was growing up,
Monday Night Football was at one place, ABC and it
was the only only game outside the Sunday windows. Occasionally
there'd be an early season Thursday night game, a late
season Saturday game. Other than that is Monday night football,
(40:48):
or you're watching on Sunday and it was all free TV,
said the old man, shaking his face with the clouds.
I listen, I get it. I am.
Speaker 4 (40:55):
I think it's back. I think it's back to ABC. Okay,
guessing ABC slash ESPN so okay. I think if you
just have Basic because we just carry YouTube TV and
then we pay for the red zone package, which hopefully
Scott Anson's hosting.
Speaker 2 (41:10):
Yeah, hope everybody wants him back. Right.
Speaker 1 (41:13):
That's a dude whose popularity has skyrocketed because of his
ability to talk fast and transition from one live look
into another.
Speaker 3 (41:21):
And not take a bathroom break for eight to nine hours.
Speaker 2 (41:23):
It's amazing.
Speaker 4 (41:24):
Doesn't drink coffee either, which is great. Well, that would
you know, explain a lot.
Speaker 2 (41:29):
Yeah, what do.
Speaker 4 (41:29):
You think of the idea of a college football red
zone that Roger Goodell said he is on the table?
Speaker 3 (41:36):
That'd be.
Speaker 1 (41:38):
Like to I like to thought of it. Listen, it's
what's the market will bear.
Speaker 2 (41:42):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (41:43):
It was the same thing we used to talk about NFL.
There was all of the the argument about why can't
if I'm a fan sitting in Great Falls, Montana, why
can I not watch.
Speaker 2 (41:56):
The Cowboys?
Speaker 1 (41:57):
Or why can I not watch the Bang a team
that isn't on national TV that much. And so the
answer to that was in the form of the NFL
Sunday Ticket, and for a while, everybody was really excited
about it. Like I said, when I lived in Cedar Park,
when I first moved into that house, which was, by
the way, twenty seven.
Speaker 2 (42:20):
Years ago yesterday.
Speaker 1 (42:22):
When I moved into that house, the first thing I
did was because you can only get it through DirecTV,
and I went ahead and subscribe to Direct TV because
I wanted the NFL Sunday Ticket, because I wanted to
watch the Rams, and I wanted to watch other games
as well, and I just the thought of being able
to watch all those games appealed to me. And so
for a few years everybody was happy with that arrangement.
(42:44):
Then you had the anti trust coming in and the
people assuming it, all this kind of stuff, and then
the thing splinters, and then the NFL realizes that streaming
platforms like Amazon Prime and Paramount m Peacock would be
willing to pay oddly amounts of money to get one
game one game, and then Roger Goodell and the owners
(43:06):
figured out further. We can sell Red Zone Channel, we
can sell we could sell the Fantasy rights and all
that stuff to ESPN, which they just did and just announced.
Speaker 2 (43:18):
So it's what the market will bear.
Speaker 1 (43:21):
And I think that if it comes to a point
where the consumer says I've had enough, I can't afford
all that or even some of that or half of
that or whatever, I'm not doing it. I'll just watch
whatever's on over the air TV, then maybe they'll back
pedal or at least make it more economical. But right now,
(43:41):
NFL popularity has never been higher, and their viewership has
never been People can say what they want, the numbers
are there. The viewership has never been higher. For those
who grumbled and complained about Amazon Prime, those numbers for
those playoff games have been through the roof. People want
to watch it Thursday or that Thanksgiving night game that's
(44:02):
on Amazon Prime at the end of a long day,
which has seen an early window Detroit lyons annual Thanksgiving
Day traditional game, followed by the Cowboys late afternoon Thanksgiving
Day traditional game. It doesn't matter. Night game still draws well,
so that's what the market will bear. That's that's how
(44:23):
that goes all right. Up next, we're gonna hear from
Long Horns SAT football coach Steve Sarkisian. That's next on
AM thirteen under the Zone.
Speaker 11 (44:35):
It's the Craig Way Show with the voice of the
Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame broadcaster Craig Way.
Speaker 1 (45:07):
Back Carol on a Thursday afternoon on Portradio in thirteen
hundred zone. Glad to have you with us this afternoon
in discussion of quite a bit of football of the
NFL variety and what it would cost. That's if you
want and again just emphasize that that is if you're
(45:29):
wanting to have the access, the availability to watch every
single NFL game this season. Now clearly chronologically it's a
virtual impossibility because you can't unless you have a screen.
Probably our good friend Tom McKay and audio visual consultations
(45:52):
could probably make this happen. Let's set you up, yeah,
where you'd have not just two games or three games,
which you could you know, a whole bunch story you
could watch. Say, let's say there's six games in an
afternoon window starting at three and then inclusive of the
three twenty five kickoffs and you had like six games
(46:12):
and you were able to do that, it would be
that sort of thing. You couldn't individually watch every single
game because because of the overlap in the start times,
but if you had access to watch whichever games you
wanted to watch, it would be that cost eleven hundred
and seventy one dollars and sixty four cents because of
all the streaming subscriptions you would need, as well as
(46:33):
NFL Sunday ticket and the like. So it's there, but
it should be pointed out that's just if you want
to have the access to that hit Somebody else point
out on social media that it would actually cost you
more just to go to one NFL game. It's a
little bit of a stretch. Maybe if you had a
(46:54):
group of four knowing it might be like that, you know,
or maybe three. I don't think it would cost two
people eleven hundred and seventy one dollars and sixty four
cents to go to one NFL game unless you're you know,
it's in a real high end demand game and you're
paying a real escalated price to a secondary ticket market.
(47:15):
And then Jerry Jones style parking. What is it seventy
five dollars to market?
Speaker 3 (47:19):
Yeah, now you're buying a ticket to the Super Bowl,
different issues, AFC or NFC title game. Totally get that.
Totally get that.
Speaker 1 (47:27):
And what was the number the number you looked up
the other day for the Texas Georgia game? What was
it to get in the stadium to be corner upper
deck at Sanford Stadium in Athens for that game on
November fifteen? With how much over five dollars? Yeah, so
I get it. There's you know that kind of thing.
When when I had the opportunity to buy four World
(47:51):
Series tickets during the pandemic for Game one at Globe
Life Feel between the Dodgers and the race, I had
a chance to buy him at face value face value
there were two hundred and seventy five apiece, So that
was eleven hundred dollars for four tickets to get that.
But it just depends on you know, you look at
that as well. Is that a life experience bucket list?
(48:13):
Yet he got and so on and so forth. So
but a lot of people are like, look, I can't
afford that, and I wouldn't be able to afford that
out on a regular basis or anything like that.
Speaker 2 (48:22):
Anyway, But.
Speaker 1 (48:24):
We were talking about that from the NFL perspective, college
football is getting price here as well as we know.
Like I said, that game in Athens between Texas and
Georgia will be especially if both teams perform as expected
during the course of the prior ten games leading up
to that, or nine games, because I think George's game ten, Yeah,
(48:48):
Arkansas's game eleven in Texas A and m is game twelve.
So if the long words are going in the Athens
nine and oh and George's nine and oh or eight
and one going in, the number is going to be
exponentially Yeah price right, Yeah, it's gonna be. It's gonna
be really uh, you know, really expensive. But that's a
(49:09):
long way off, and the long wordes have to get
there first.
Speaker 2 (49:11):
Heave to get there.
Speaker 1 (49:11):
So let's hear some more from head coach Steve Sarkisian
asked about a variety of the positions we ran over
some of yesterday. Here's more, and he's talking about trying
to make sure he gets his secondary solidified in the
way that he wants it going into the start of
the season.
Speaker 10 (49:29):
Yeah, I mean, I'm not in a rush.
Speaker 12 (49:31):
The truth be told.
Speaker 9 (49:33):
We've got time, you know, but I think twenty four
more practices to go something crazy. I don't know that's
a that's an eternity in my world. You know, I
need versatility there. I need versatility in our secondary. I
love the fact that man guys are playing multiple positions
right now for us, you know, because predicated on how
(49:56):
we want to play certain calls with certain guys.
Speaker 10 (49:58):
In the field. It might be based on that, and
so different guys are gonna play.
Speaker 9 (50:02):
It might be, you know, what's the best matchup for
that week, and our defensive staff will figure of who
their personnel is and what that looks like it might
be held PK wants to call it that week, and
so we need all that versatility that we can get
along with the.
Speaker 10 (50:15):
Development of our players as we go.
Speaker 9 (50:17):
But we got a lot of really cool options, and
that part I'm definitely excited.
Speaker 1 (50:21):
About, from the secondary to the defensive line. Is he
seeing any separation along that between starters and backups where.
Speaker 9 (50:29):
We're at now, A lot of these guys probably would
have been able to spell those guys more than last
year that we were able to last year.
Speaker 10 (50:37):
I think that's probably the difference. You know. You know,
some of those guys, if they were on.
Speaker 9 (50:42):
Our team last season, Vernon and Alfred might not have
played as have to have played as many snaps as
they did a year ago.
Speaker 10 (50:48):
That's what my goal was coming into the season.
Speaker 9 (50:50):
Could we develop that room into where you know, we
can play a lot of a lot of players, a
lot of people so that the over time that wear
and tear wouldn't take.
Speaker 10 (50:58):
Its toll on us.
Speaker 9 (51:00):
And I think we've done that. You know, you can
choot and went out and got five transferred defensive lineman.
Speaker 1 (51:04):
You know.
Speaker 9 (51:05):
Then we signed a really good d line class of
three players there, So I think we're in good shape
to have the rotation that.
Speaker 10 (51:14):
We're looking for.
Speaker 9 (51:15):
And that's not nowhere near solidified right now, but man,
I'm sure the bodies that are going to help us
be able.
Speaker 12 (51:20):
To do that.
Speaker 1 (51:21):
There's a lot to talk about progression these days, progression
of specific position areas offense, defense, special teams, and Sarko
was asked overall about the progression of both his offense
and his defense.
Speaker 9 (51:33):
Yeah, I would say this historically for me, surely your
defense better be ahead of your offense, and we are
I think our defense is playing really good right now.
The best teams I've ever been on, the defense usually
is kind of ahead from that perspective on an offensive standpoint,
not that the offense isn't doing some really good things.
Speaker 10 (51:53):
I mean, I think the second player team run today.
Speaker 9 (51:55):
I think Trey Wisener snapped off about a fifty sixty
yard run, which was great to see. I don't love
that because I want our defense to be so dominant
that that it makes it so hard on our offense.
Speaker 10 (52:05):
To do what they want to do.
Speaker 9 (52:07):
But we're doing good enough stuff. But I think offensive
we can play better. The key on offensive football is
it takes all level. You know, you have one guy
have a breakdown at left guard, that's a sack. We
may have guys running wide open down the field. On defense,
the three technique might go the wrong way, but the
end can make the tackle and nobody notices the three
technique make that mistake, And so you know, you're we're
(52:29):
fighting for consistency on both sides of the ball. But
I think really the consistency is paramount on the offensive
side of the ball, where that's what we've got to
keep pushing these guys towards and then like I touched on,
we can't harbor the negative plays like this, like it's over,
It's not the end of the world.
Speaker 10 (52:46):
It's okay.
Speaker 9 (52:47):
You know, we're gonna were gonna have seventy seventy five
snaps a game like, let's get on to the next play,
let's keep playing.
Speaker 10 (52:52):
And so I think there's some there's some mental toughness.
Speaker 9 (52:54):
That that we got to keep working on on that
aspect that we'll get to. But I would say our
defense is ahead of our offense, and I'm okay with that. Okay,
okay with that. So we got got to start going
on offense. We've got to pick it up and play
with a little better consistenty than we have.
Speaker 1 (53:08):
And if they're going to pick up the offensive consistency,
obviously it starts with a quarterback. So uh and and
staying away from the catastrophic mistake, and Sark was asked,
how is Arch doing in terms of taking care of
the football, and been good.
Speaker 9 (53:24):
You know, I felt like yesterday was probably not our
best practice of taking care of the ball.
Speaker 10 (53:29):
Now we've obviously got some guys.
Speaker 9 (53:30):
That you know, we've been working hard on defense about
playing the ball even better than we have in the past.
Speaker 10 (53:38):
And you know, I think in.
Speaker 9 (53:40):
The last two days, Manny Muhammad's had a couple of
picks which have been really good plays.
Speaker 10 (53:44):
Jolana McDonald had a nice play today, or Roberson.
Speaker 9 (53:47):
So we're playing the ball, in my opinion, better in
the air that we have in the past.
Speaker 10 (53:52):
You know, it's one thing to guard your man, it's
another to play the ball.
Speaker 9 (53:56):
And I think we're talented enough to play the ball
and we've been making that a huge emphasis. But I
don't think it's for you know, yesterday I thought there
was maybe a couple of poor decisions.
Speaker 10 (54:05):
It's not for lack of poor decisions.
Speaker 9 (54:06):
I think sometimes it's guy's making really good plays and
that's what competitive practices are all about.
Speaker 2 (54:11):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (54:12):
And now if they're into full pads after they had
the run up, what does he look for on a
day by day basis once he's got the guys in
full pads.
Speaker 9 (54:21):
Well, you know, I think one, you know, your pad
level is so important, and you can have good pad
level not in pads or even in half pads, but
when you get to full pads, like you really got
to have good pad level because the next guy at
Crossby's probably can have even that good better pad level,
so you got to be great from that aspect. I
(54:44):
think that we're always looking for contact courage. You know,
this is we play at contact sport, and then how
do we play when when some of those collisions occur?
And then are you overwhelmed with the physicality of the game.
Speaker 10 (54:57):
And that's it.
Speaker 9 (54:58):
I know that sounds like what he talking about, but
sometimes when you're so consumed with I want to be physical.
I want to be physical. I want to be physical,
your spatial awareness of what's going on around you, you know, shrinks.
Speaker 10 (55:10):
And we want to be a really smart team too.
As physical as we want to be, we want to
be really smart. We want to be really aware.
Speaker 9 (55:16):
Our intenna has got to be up, our alert's got
to be up. We got to communicate at a.
Speaker 10 (55:19):
Really high level.
Speaker 9 (55:21):
But if we're just so enamored with just you know,
crash test dummies, you know that that doesn't work for us.
We've got to think really good and play physical, and
so we're trying to combine those two things at once.
Speaker 1 (55:31):
And finally, there was a lot of talk about red
zone and the red zone inefficiency that the Long Words
had in key moments last year. Now with a true
definite deep threat receiving tight end and Jack Hendries and
with the other weapons they have, how's that red zone
work going? With the tight end spot and the red
zone work overall.
Speaker 12 (55:49):
Yeah, you know, we've been.
Speaker 9 (55:50):
Fortunate obviously in the last you know, a couple of
years with JT and then Gunner and their impact in
the red area for us. I think it's always nice
to have a quality time in in the red area
or two. You know, they're a little bigger body, a
little bigger frame. You know, they can box people out
to make catches.
Speaker 10 (56:08):
They can you can high point balls.
Speaker 9 (56:10):
How the times we see Gunner make catches above DB's
where there's not much a dB could do about that.
It's always nice to have that, you know. I think
part of that, yes was was with Jack. I don't
think that was the overriding theme. We wanted a guy
who had really experienced, who had played football at a
high level at the tight end position.
Speaker 10 (56:29):
A bonus to that was his ability to help us
in the red area.
Speaker 1 (56:33):
So there's some sound from Longhorn's head coach Steve Circusian
and talking about his football team. Now, they did have
a player availability following the morning practical they've they've been alternating.
Yesterday was an off day for the players, and today
they went back to work with a morning practice, and
(56:56):
so they had some comments from DJ Campbell and and
also Trey Weisner among the players and some other players
as well. So we're going to hear from some of
the Longhorn players coming up, Leanga lafoul Manny Mohammad, so
we'll hear from some long worn players coming up, and
(57:17):
again coming up at the four o'clock hour, my conversation
sit down with the new head basketball coach of the
Texas Longhorns, Sean Miller, will have that coming up. And
we're going to also give away two more copies of
Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine.
Speaker 2 (57:34):
It's all coming up here on thirteen under.
Speaker 1 (57:36):
The Zone, third and final hour of the program here
on thirteen hundreds. I'm glad to have you with us
on a Thursday afternoon. Craig waylong side of the producer,
Cameron Parker, glad to have your input as well. You know,
Ken we were talking about when we were talking about
countdown days to kickoff like today is today would be
(57:58):
Jatte baron days until kickoff when he wore twenty three
before he shifted back to seven, So there's that. When
we got to twenty six, we mentioned Trey Wisner quen
Trey van Weisner, he was twenty six, but he's down
number five, so we could redo that if you want,
(58:20):
didn't want to get down when we get down to the fight,
we're gonna hear from him coming up in a few minutes.
But coming up here very shortly will be the conversation
with Longhorn's.
Speaker 2 (58:33):
Head basketball coach Sean Miller. We have that coming up
as well.
Speaker 1 (58:36):
Then we'll hear from Trey Wisner here and the players
coming off the practice field from this morning's practice. You
told me that you really enjoyed Happy Gilmore too. I did, Okay,
What did you like most about it?
Speaker 4 (58:53):
I think just the jokes, just you know, not many
movies made now and have like the sense of humor
of Adam Sandler, so I think that maybe a little
bit of you know, nostalgic feel to it. I enjoyed that.
I enjoyed the cameos. I thought Scotty Scheffler had some
great lines. I love seeing my boy Jordan Speith get
involved in stuff. Fern Lundquist, who lives in Austin with
(59:15):
Austin High School as the lead commentator in the movie,
so you know all of that stuff.
Speaker 2 (59:22):
It's funny bring this up because.
Speaker 1 (59:27):
The whole thing about Scotty Scheffler and the and the
playful digging sugar himself and having to go to jail
and all that other kind of thing. Today, at the
press conference there with the FedEx cup going on, Scotty
was asked about this. Actually, yesterday he was asked about
(59:47):
the the fact that Netflix is presenting Scotty's Chicken Shack
at the event. So, you know, he makes the cameo
in Netflix, you know, where he includes him punching the
team Maxi Golfer that he's facing and he ends up
at the handcuffs and the tongue in cheek deal. It
(01:00:09):
also references the real life arrest he at from the
Louisville Police Department. So the joke continues in the holding
cell and the officer approaches him and says, it's been
three days. Sure you don't want to make that call.
Depends what's for dinner, and the officer says chicken fingers,
and then Scotty says I'll stick around another night. So
(01:00:30):
the Chicken Shack, which is at TPC South Wind, includes
a photo op of Scheffler from the scene where fans
can quote unquote do their time, and the menu features
classic chicken fingers, Memphis Honey gold chicken fingers, and zesty
lemon pepper wet fingers. He called the experience a lot
(01:00:53):
of fun, said Adam Sandler and his team did a
good job of making everybody feel really comfortable.
Speaker 2 (01:01:00):
Got his chicken jack. If you're going to Memphis, it'll
be out there.
Speaker 4 (01:01:03):
I love how he's able to make fun of himself
over this just really leans into it, which is funny,
and it's funny seeing the tour like, okay, this I
think like ten years ago, maybe even five years ago,
like you talked about the issues with John Day and
the legal troubles. Yeah, you know he was in Can
you imagine like, you know, one of the events doing
something similar with that.
Speaker 3 (01:01:24):
Now, of course John Daly was.
Speaker 4 (01:01:26):
You know, he's a little bit more different, more serious
charges versus Scotty. Just a big mix up with the
police officer who wasn't thinking correctly. But even then, like
even five years ago, I don't think the PGA tour
would have been okay with something like this, but they're
leaning into it, which is good, and get on Scotti
Scheffler for you know, making fun of himself. I thought
(01:01:46):
that's one of the funniest scenes in the film is
when that happens and the cops come up and he
says not again, like freaking hilarious.
Speaker 1 (01:01:55):
Past and present golfers who are in this film include
everyone Kopka, Rice and the Shambeau, Rory McElroy, Fred Couples,
Bobby Jones, the one Bobby Jones just kidding. Yeah, I
will tell you this. The one that did surprise me
when I saw on the list, Jack Nicholas. Yeah, Jack
has the biggest big scene he does. Travino is that it,
(01:02:18):
which is great. Uh Lee Trevino was always great for golf, always.
Speaker 4 (01:02:21):
Great for oh yeah, outstanding personality, outsetting storyteller.
Speaker 2 (01:02:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:02:26):
Uh so, anyway, I thought you'd get a kick out
of that doing that. You al also would get a
kick out of this. And I've been telling you about this.
It was coming, it was coming, it was coming. It's
coming tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (01:02:36):
Tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (01:02:36):
August eighth is the seventy fifth anniversary of the start
of Waterburger. So tomorrow from eleven am to eight pm.
Seventy five cent water burgers tomorrow. So that's got to
be on your list, right, I mean, you get tunes
making a double water burger, I'm telling you, well, then
(01:02:57):
you'd have that Hank Kill two dollars one, so you
can get two old ones and for less than that
even so seventy five cent waterberg tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (01:03:05):
Something that keep in mind. All right, we need a break.
Speaker 1 (01:03:07):
When we come back, we'll have the conversation with Texas
Longhorns brand new men's basketball coach Sean Miller. That's next
to here on thirteen under the zone.
Speaker 3 (01:03:19):
Back to the Craig Way Show.
Speaker 11 (01:03:21):
Connect with Craig through the text line by text Team
Zone to eight one three zero followed by your message.
Standard message and data rates may apply.
Speaker 1 (01:03:35):
Well, this may be some mad news for Mavericks fans.
You know, they've been looking to build a new arena
for the Mavericks, even though I think the American Airline
Centers is fine and now it's been around for what
twenty three, twenty four years or something, But that was
a whole part of what was going to go on
with the sale, and there was talk about them moving,
(01:03:57):
you know, with a possibility casino gameling and all that
sort of stuff. But one of the areas that they
were looking at was and I know you won't be
familiar with this, Cameron, because as far as I know,
you've never been in jail before.
Speaker 3 (01:04:10):
I have not.
Speaker 1 (01:04:10):
Okay, Well, don't plan on it either, Okay. Well, one
of the areas they were exploring for a possible new
basketball arena was the loose Sterrett Justice Center near Commerce
Street in Riverfront Boulevard, not far from the old Reunion
Arena by the way, just kind of down the street
(01:04:32):
that they would There was a lot of whispers about that. However,
Daryl Martin, the Dallas County Administrator, says, I've heard that,
but they haven't contacted us, and apparently they're not that
interested in it.
Speaker 2 (01:04:43):
So no Mavericks at the jail site.
Speaker 1 (01:04:47):
And while that's normally good news, in this case, it
might not be necessarily that doable.
Speaker 4 (01:04:54):
I think the only Maverick that Mavericks standin would want
the jail site would be Nico Harris.
Speaker 1 (01:04:57):
Yeah, there you go. So yeah, it was I just
got to set it up. You knocked it out of
the park. Speaking of basketball Longhorn men's basketball players doing
individual workouts and some collective team things. And this is
a brand new chapter in Texas Longhorn basketball history with
(01:05:18):
Sean Miller, the former Arizona and Xavier coach, taking the
reins and trying to construct a roster that has a
bevy of new faces, putting together his coaching staff, his
support staff, and getting himself acclimated to living in the area.
All of these and some others were some questions I
had just a little while ago when I sat down
(01:05:38):
with the brand new head coach of the Longhorn, Shawn Miller. So,
the last time we visited, you talked about having so
much to get to in terms of putting your staff
together and roster construction and all those things. Have you
been pleased with how it's come together through the process
(01:05:58):
of the last few.
Speaker 12 (01:05:59):
Months I have.
Speaker 13 (01:06:01):
You know, as we sit here and talk right now,
you know been here between four and five months. It
feels a lot longer than that. We've gone through a
lot of different things. I'll start, Bill Craig, with our staff.
I really love the staff that we've been able to
put together. You know, we have I think a lot
(01:06:22):
of different ingredients that complement each other and make us
what what I believe is a complete staff. And I
don't think there's anything more important or sacred to a
coach's success or a program success and the people that
work closely together on an everyday basis and that are
in charge of these young people, the team, the individual
(01:06:42):
players that we have. So that's the first part that
I feel really good about. And then you know, our
team right now, we have a full roster. It took
us a while to get there, but you know, I
like our experience. I think we have the opportunity, if
we remain healthy, to have a team that has quality depth,
and in particular, I think our guard play. You know,
(01:07:04):
we come at you with a lot of thousand point scorers,
players that have played in college basketball for three or
more years. In the versatility of a group there that
can really carry us through what I hope will be
a very successful season.
Speaker 1 (01:07:19):
There's an old saying, some say it's a truism of
that the second most important member of the staff beyond
the head coaches, the strength coach.
Speaker 2 (01:07:28):
And with that in mind.
Speaker 1 (01:07:30):
How important is it to have productive as coaches call it,
good weight on your guys? To try to build them
up physically for the challenges of this season.
Speaker 13 (01:07:40):
Well, that's been a real focal point of us establishing
our way of doing things as a basketball program here
at Texas. I brought with me and I consider him
a full member of our staff. Andy Kettler, coach Ket
has been at some great places in Major League Baseball
for a period of time. Has worked both at Louisville
(01:08:02):
and when he was at West Virginia for about a
ten year window. That's when you would have played West
Virginia as part of the Big Twelve and they would
have been referred to as Press Virginia if you remember
that group. He would have been the strength of additioning
coach for Bob Huggins during that period of time. I
believe he's the best in the country, and because he
understands the game of basketball, you know, his focal point
(01:08:26):
is how do we train our players in a safe,
aggressive manner and how do we bring out not only
the best of them while they're here at Texas, but
how can we allow them to leave the University of
Texas and play the longest period of time in their
lives this sport. So you know, everything from the machines
that we order built for seven footers, to the things
(01:08:48):
we choose not to do, even from a conditioning perspective,
We do zero running on a track. We do no
pounding outside of the court. That's intentional, right, So I
love how he's done it. We've made a lot of
progress with our team, beginning in late May, early June
all the way through the entire month of August, and
(01:09:09):
I think that visibly you'll see some real change in
our changes in our guys body. And what I hope
is that we have a great conditioned team, because you
can't be successful, especially in the SEC and college basketball,
unless your conditioning area is superior.
Speaker 1 (01:09:27):
How has what you've needed to have take place rehabs
following surgery, all season, unavailability to certain guys due to
those types of things affected how you and the staff
have tried to compile this group and get them in
their individual work and in their collective work to be
able to function even as you're anticipating the return of
(01:09:50):
other guys being healthy again.
Speaker 13 (01:09:53):
Right, So the circumstances that we inherited to some degree
and the team that we built over this summer, you know,
we're really minus what you would call four players being
able to participate one hundred percent. Right two Tremon Mark
and Lacina and Trey Orr, who were counting on both
to have big roles on our team. That they've been
(01:10:15):
cleared for non contact, it's just a matter of them
getting all the way through their cycle of rehab from
start to finish. In Lacina's case, he tours ACL in
early October. He's entering the eleventh eleventh month. His rehab
has gone extremely well. His surgery was successful. It's a
matter of these last two four six weeks really allowing
(01:10:39):
him to max out and be the most healthy, flexible,
and strongest that he possibly can be. And we're entering
that very very final phase. With Tremon, he had torn labram,
which you guys lived through a year ago, and that
can be very problematic for a basketball player. He had
surgery this spring and I would say he's about eighty
(01:10:59):
percent through it in terms of his overall recovery. However,
he's been shooting and cleared for non contact, been a
full participant in our strength and conditioning program for most
of the summer. We just haven't allowed either of those
guys to play in terms of our contact that's hurt
us in the ability to play a lot five on five.
(01:11:20):
We've done the best we can in that area, but
those are things that happen in the summer. We've still
had a very productive summer. Our final two pieces though,
to our roster are two freshmen, Lewis and Declan. They
both come as international students, Lewis from Great Britain, Declan
from Germany, and there are about two weeks two weeks
(01:11:42):
to four weeks away from actually arriving here in the
States to be a freshman here at the University of Texas.
So they're in the final stages of doing what they
need to do in their respective countries. But they both
officially visited US. They've been here at the University of Texas,
and I think they're anxiou to get here finally, but
(01:12:02):
they've not been a part of anything we've done this summer.
Both will be incoming freshmen, so they definitely will have
a learning curve when they get here.
Speaker 1 (01:12:12):
Safe to say that at this point the area that
perhaps has the most depth with which you're the most
comfortable right down as your back court.
Speaker 13 (01:12:20):
For sure, and I would even say backcourt extends to
like all guard positions, the point guard, the two, the three,
and then sometimes the way the game's played today, you know,
and what I've learned about the SEC, you have to
be a depth at both playing two bigs and sometimes
only one big. And when you play with one big,
(01:12:42):
that allows you to play an extra perimeter player on
the court. So we're building our roster to be able
to do both to compete in obviously this Lion's Den
of a league.
Speaker 12 (01:12:52):
We're in the SEC. But I do love our depth.
Speaker 13 (01:12:57):
Sometimes I can't even name them all, and I belie
leave this that each of our returning guards as well
as newcomers, will have a big role on this year's team.
You know, my attempt, Craig would be you know, you
look at Jordan Pope and sim Wilcher, Tremon and Mark
Dalan Swain, Ken the Weaver.
Speaker 12 (01:13:20):
And Cam Heidi. I hope I didn't miss one.
Speaker 13 (01:13:25):
If I did, I think it bodes wealth in terms
of being able to back up that. You know, a
number of those guys have been a thousand point scores,
have played in college basketball for two or more seasons,
many of which are in their last season, have Texas experience.
They returned from last year's team, you know, in the
quality of shooting right.
Speaker 12 (01:13:47):
And dribbling and passing.
Speaker 13 (01:13:48):
So I believe we have versatility and depth, and that
to me is initially what I would consider the strength
of our team.
Speaker 1 (01:13:56):
With the understanding that one size does not fit all.
SHO continue to see your guys development. Do you have
in mind or at least historically for you, what is
most comfortable for you in the staff in terms of
your rotation, how many guys you like to use during
a game.
Speaker 13 (01:14:10):
Regularly it usually settles into eight. We've played as many
as nine nine. The ninth guy just more dependent on
circumstances and length of time is not usually more than
just several minutes. However, that ninth players playing for a
(01:14:32):
reason and oftentimes when foul trouble, injuries, illness, different things occur,
he's called the duty in a bigger fashion. I can
see this year's team coming out of the gates really
going nine deep.
Speaker 12 (01:14:47):
I hope that's the case.
Speaker 13 (01:14:48):
I think depth is a real factor in college basketball.
You know it's you know, when you play thirty five games,
you're playing eighteen plus the SEC tournament against the very
best in the country. You know, in our case, you
look at our non conference schedule Maui three games and
three days in the month of November. What's the first
(01:15:09):
game after Maui Virginia at home? You know, what's the
opening game of the year at Charlotte to play Duke.
What's the non conference game which we have to return
at Yukon, you know, which I'm very familiar with coming
from the Big East. You know that's going to require
a lot. It's nobody's going to shoot holes in our schedule.
(01:15:29):
So what helps you get through that schedule? A competitive
balance and spirit every day players that can do multiple things,
a versatile team, but also scholarship players that you know,
we're not relying on an iron five that we can
go as many as nine ten in a pinch deep.
So we tried to build it that way. I hope
(01:15:52):
that's the case.
Speaker 1 (01:15:53):
Well, I was going to ask you about the schedule
next and given the SEC's release of the conference schedule
this week as well, what's your overview when you look
at it coming off of that very competitive non conference
schedule to talk about and then you jump right into
conference play in early January, you.
Speaker 13 (01:16:12):
Know, just saying it like it is, it's not to
our advantage to play our most difficult games early this
season simply because we don't have the lack of our
lack of familiarity is our biggest obstacle here initially, right,
not just because we have you know, in essence, eight
(01:16:34):
nine new players, but we're a new coaching staff. So
other than Dalen Swain and Lasina Trey or nobody at
Texas has ever been coached by me in a single game,
has never really gone through a real practice in the
fall yet. So you know, we don't have the gift
of experience in Texas experience and you know, Sean Miller
(01:16:55):
in this staff experience. So we embrace that. I think
we acknowledge it. That's what it is. So we're trying
to work through different creative ways to overcome it and
catch up quickly. But we're going to be challenged with
you know, those types of games the Maui Invitational Tournament,
not just who we play there, but the fact that
(01:17:16):
we have to play back to back to back games
coming out of the gates in Game one playing Duke
and Charlotte, playing at Yukon, playing Virginia at home, and
then the Guarantee games. You know, those types of games,
which when you look at what's changed the most in
college basketball the unpredictability of November games, because, like us,
(01:17:39):
there are certain teams that have eight new players, but
at that level, sometimes those eight new players can change
the dynamic of their roster and flip it in one year,
more more so now than ever before. So you know,
we respect every game and every opponent, and we have
to be ready, especially in those first two months.
Speaker 1 (01:17:59):
Last thing I want to ask you is the lifestyle
transition for you and the family as well. At the
news conference, you talked about how there had been one
house finished in Cincinnati and trying.
Speaker 2 (01:18:08):
To adjust to here.
Speaker 1 (01:18:09):
How has all of that gone for you and the
family in terms of relocation and establishment of your residency
down here.
Speaker 13 (01:18:18):
Well, I'll just start off with you know, I'm just
both honored and grateful to be the head basketball coach
here at the University of Texas, and you know, forever
grateful towards Cris Delcante for his belief in me as
a coach and allowing us to have this opportunity.
Speaker 12 (01:18:38):
It doesn't take you very long to.
Speaker 13 (01:18:41):
Understand just what a terrific and extra special place the
University of Texas is living in Austin, Texas. The facilities
that we have this campus, the athletic department in general,
it's second to none.
Speaker 3 (01:18:56):
You know.
Speaker 12 (01:18:56):
We like to say Texas is different, and it is.
Speaker 13 (01:19:00):
So, you know, the transition has been really smooth from
that perspective, because you're you're running to something you want
to You're thrilled to be a part of, an anxious
and eager to get started. You know, the weather in
the summer, the beautiful blue sky, the Texas heat, you know,
that's even a positive for us. So my wife and I,
we have three sons that are all older. Our youngest
(01:19:22):
is twenty five, our oldest is thirty, and our middle
son is twenty eight, so we don't have kids in
the house. So it's her and I and we're anxious
to move into our house. We're going to live here
close to campus, and we move in late August, so
we're a few weeks away.
Speaker 2 (01:19:42):
There.
Speaker 1 (01:19:43):
It is with Sean Miller, Hey, it's not often you
hear a guy say the beautiful blue sky in the
heat of Texas.
Speaker 2 (01:19:49):
They like it. I like it.
Speaker 1 (01:19:52):
I know there's those of you out there going give
it time. You got to remember, also, where the other
two places. This is where he's lived. Cincinnati is hot
in the summertime and it's quite humid. Arizona is not
a humid but it's very hot in the summer. So
maybe this kind of strikes the balance in between. I
don't know, interesting things from him about all of that
(01:20:16):
and the guys he has and the work that still
has to come for them in getting their full roster,
because they have not had their full roster yet, as
he pointed out, with the two international players coming in
and getting guys off of surgery and rehab as well.
So it's going to be interesting. And the heavy duty
(01:20:40):
conference schedule preceded by a very challenging non conference schedule
as well. All Right, we're going to have some more
long on football talk coming up. I'm thirteen under the.
Speaker 11 (01:20:50):
Zone and we're back to the Craigway Show. Have a
message for Craig, share it by using the talkbacked feature
on the Ihearts Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:21:09):
Wapp back Carol on Thursday afternoon.
Speaker 1 (01:21:15):
Okay, we had the giveaway of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazines.
And the guy who canvases all of that is antone
likeam who is going to take part of the music
survey tomorrow. But he's also charged with the responsibility of
giving us.
Speaker 2 (01:21:30):
The other contesting things.
Speaker 1 (01:21:32):
For example, we're gonna give away a pair of tickets
to see Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace on September
third at Moody Center.
Speaker 2 (01:21:43):
So Anton is with us right now.
Speaker 1 (01:21:44):
Would care to describe the stylistic musical musical renditions from
Breaking Benjamin and Three Days Grace the type of bands
they are?
Speaker 5 (01:21:54):
So I'm probably gonna get some heat for this, but
I've got two words for you. Yeah, dad, raw, this
is like classic late nineties early two thousand's alternative kind
of stuff. It's real, real edgy songwriting, real kind of
I don't want to say industrial production, but it is
very produced music, so to speak.
Speaker 2 (01:22:13):
Why would you get in trouble for that?
Speaker 5 (01:22:15):
You're just speaking the truth because it kind of ages people.
You know, if somebody says, oh, well, I remember those
guys back in the day, and it's like, well, you know,
it might be time to get your cholesterol checked.
Speaker 2 (01:22:25):
Okay, all right? You know well, I mean listen, folks
can say that is right here.
Speaker 1 (01:22:29):
I start saying every time I make a mentioned about
yacht rock, which predates that oh yeah, by another fifteen years. Roughly,
it's more like Grandpa rock now all right, stop right,
just stop, you know, all right?
Speaker 3 (01:22:42):
All right?
Speaker 1 (01:22:43):
So here's how it works. You download the free iHeartRadio
app have you ever't done it? And then you search
AM thirteen under the zone. You tap that red button
with a white microphone in it, and you leave us
a message with the keyword you heard. Today's key word
it is diary. I did not say diarrhea. I said
(01:23:04):
diary and trying to make Craig say diarrhea on a
that's that's right, that's right, crazy Why diary?
Speaker 2 (01:23:10):
Diary?
Speaker 5 (01:23:10):
It's one of their One of the recent albums is
Diary of Jane from Breaking Benjamin. It's they're gonna be
playing some songs off that album the their tour.
Speaker 3 (01:23:18):
They're coming through Austin in about a month here. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (01:23:22):
I always when I go for the keywords, I just
try to find the stuff that people would, you know,
be able to attach themselves to, so release titles and
things like that.
Speaker 1 (01:23:29):
Okay, are are you gonna be ready for this music
survey tomorrow? I would expect a lot out of you
being a drummer in a band.
Speaker 2 (01:23:34):
Right now, I have.
Speaker 5 (01:23:35):
Been wanting to do this music survey since I found
out it was a thing about three weeks ago.
Speaker 1 (01:23:40):
It's all I've ever wanted. Craig, Well, you'll get your
wish tomorrow. It'll be in the three o'clock hour. You
and Chip Jellison, who is like the technical brain to
this place. Oh yeah, I'm so you're talking about talk
about divergent offerings.
Speaker 2 (01:23:53):
I would imagine this would be fun.
Speaker 1 (01:23:55):
We can ask them what their roles are. We can
have them to find it versus me. That's true. That's
a good point. Okay, Uh, thank you, absolutely appreciate that.
Speaker 6 (01:24:03):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (01:24:03):
Let's hear from the logorns running back.
Speaker 3 (01:24:07):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:24:07):
We call him Trey his full name Quentin Travian Wiser.
Speaker 10 (01:24:11):
How's what the DJ name to the one James said.
Speaker 6 (01:24:16):
Just coming in my freshman year.
Speaker 14 (01:24:17):
Over these three years out have been here, being able
to participate on this team with DJ, I can see
the improvement not only him as a player, but him
as a person when it comes to.
Speaker 6 (01:24:26):
The facility and the couture.
Speaker 14 (01:24:27):
We got DJ definitely an old lim that we looked
to wheneverneath that juice and the energy to get going
to practice and game day.
Speaker 6 (01:24:34):
So He's definitely a key factor to the way we
run the ball.
Speaker 10 (01:24:37):
He didn't say he's a nastist line, but what we
think he is.
Speaker 14 (01:24:42):
Just because you know, it takes a real dog to
not have someone to get him going, you know what
I'm saying, Like DJ could come out and even if
he's not feeling, he's still gonna go because that's who
he is, and that's what.
Speaker 2 (01:24:54):
We look for.
Speaker 14 (01:24:54):
Whenever it's time to run the ball, somebody is always
on go. So that's what DJ does.
Speaker 10 (01:24:59):
Jews, where where does all your juice come from? Is
everyone talks about I hear that energize some money.
Speaker 14 (01:25:07):
Really just growing up in a small town like I did,
and then being the oldest of three, I've always been like,
you know, the one that make things happen for my family.
So that that translated into me enjoying what I do
and how I do it.
Speaker 6 (01:25:20):
So every day I come out, I'm gonna put.
Speaker 14 (01:25:22):
My effort and time into my craft and my teammates
in the program.
Speaker 3 (01:25:25):
Trey kind of pick background that question.
Speaker 10 (01:25:26):
You've heard a lot about the trick around wise as
a leader.
Speaker 3 (01:25:29):
Who shaped your leadership tip?
Speaker 14 (01:25:31):
Definitely my mom. I watched my mom go through a
bunch still still to today, she's battling certain things personally,
but I never once called her in the morning and
she's down.
Speaker 6 (01:25:43):
Anytime we talk in.
Speaker 14 (01:25:44):
The morning before I come to practice, we say, I
pray and then we'll joke or laugh about some stuff
and then we'll end it with all right, love, you
have a good day. So she just really like, like
Ford that INTI my soul, like to just every day
tap into somebody because you never know, like people go
through stuff daily.
Speaker 6 (01:25:59):
I go through to day.
Speaker 14 (01:26:00):
I know y'all probably got personal things that y'all go through,
and just to have somebody there to show you that,
like it's okay to go through things and.
Speaker 6 (01:26:06):
Still tap into others. That's where I get my leadership from.
Speaker 10 (01:26:09):
Trade moved to number five this year. You got it
on the arm as well. Was there different things to it?
Speaker 14 (01:26:14):
Uh?
Speaker 6 (01:26:14):
Yeah, my dad, my mom, my brother, and my sister
and me. So it's just us five.
Speaker 14 (01:26:20):
It's always been us fave outside of my my uh
my mom's family. But yeah, we uh growing up were
just like you know what, Washington five and.
Speaker 6 (01:26:29):
That became my thing.
Speaker 14 (01:26:29):
So anytime y'all see me, I can see my my
other four with me Washington five.
Speaker 15 (01:26:34):
Tuck when you were a freshman and you weren't necessarily
getting you the playing time we're getting now, Like how
vitos special teams and playing on special teams to get
in those reps to your development and all that.
Speaker 14 (01:26:45):
Special teams is very vital, still vital to this day,
even with the ropes I am getting that running back,
I still take special team series because at the end
of the day, if you're not a franchise player, like
because you tell us all the time you're gonna play
special teams, you wanna get to the league. So just
me having my dreams of playing in the league, whether
it's special teams or running back, I do what I
gotta do. So just playing for special teams my freshman
(01:27:06):
year really showed me like, in order to earn your stripes,
you have to buy into what's going on by into
the culture and the team. So that's how I did
my freshman I just bought into the special teams aspect
of things. And while I was buying into that, I
was still taking my mental notes on the running back
expect of things.
Speaker 6 (01:27:20):
So special teams definitely play the big key factor in
my plan.
Speaker 2 (01:27:23):
For the year.
Speaker 8 (01:27:23):
Under your belt, a thousand yard rusher, how can you
take your game to the next level?
Speaker 3 (01:27:30):
What then what's next for.
Speaker 14 (01:27:32):
Your Definitely staying healthy, keeping my body healthy because now
it's it's crunched time. And then another thing I would
say take my my plan to another level is my
open field tactics, like making the safeties miss, making DB's
missing open field because as long as I got the
old line to take her to box the DB's and safe,
That's what I'm worried about. So just being able to
(01:27:52):
make the guys missing open field.
Speaker 16 (01:27:54):
On that note, though, we talked to coach Flad and
he said that do you really embrace being a run
back to summer to be a great running back? And
so what did that look like for you over the
summer to kind of build.
Speaker 3 (01:28:05):
Yourself to be in this position.
Speaker 14 (01:28:08):
For one, definitely eating right, I have to gain some
few pounds, put some weight on, so definitely, uh, changing
my eating habits and learn how to eat like a pro.
Speaker 6 (01:28:16):
And then another thing was really just talking smack to
the defensive player. I see you back that line players
like lion. But yeah, just just.
Speaker 14 (01:28:25):
Really tapping into the defense cause like at the end
of the day, as much as we wanna go out
and beat on other teams, it starts within ourselves. So
it's as much as they compete against me, I try
to compete against them and really just bring guys with me,
bring the younger guys with me, and just show them like,
if you want things done, you gotta boil your neck
and get it done.
Speaker 3 (01:28:42):
So what's the hardest thing to change about your dial?
Speaker 6 (01:28:46):
I was a big McDonald's guy. I ain't gonna cap.
I love McDonald's, like McDonald's top ten, but I had
to cut the McDonald's out.
Speaker 3 (01:28:54):
What's your meal?
Speaker 2 (01:28:55):
What's your meal?
Speaker 14 (01:28:56):
I got to baking make double two of them, ten
piece and the large fry power aid ed time, ed time.
Speaker 10 (01:29:05):
They're a little bit of uh.
Speaker 3 (01:29:08):
They're a little bit of uh, a little bit of uh.
Fresh year trade him and Ricky.
Speaker 2 (01:29:12):
Stewart right now.
Speaker 14 (01:29:14):
Definitely the thing I could give Ricky though for my
freshman year, he's he's he's faster than me.
Speaker 6 (01:29:19):
I can't cap Ricky. Ricky got some speed.
Speaker 14 (01:29:21):
But the thing I like most about Ricky he's he's
good with adversity. Not many freshmen you see come in
cold face adversity and and keep it going, but Ricky
did shut down his face, he faced his adversity, came
back and he's looking good right now.
Speaker 6 (01:29:37):
He's gaining weight, looking faster, and he's cheaping his head on.
Speaker 10 (01:29:41):
Got he got a healthier run back. How does that
affect your role for the offense? Is it changing at all?
Speaker 14 (01:29:49):
I wouldn't say it's changing, But even with a healthy
running back room, I kind of wanted to step more
into my vocal leaders side of things. He's past two years,
I was more of a following leader, if y'all get
what I'm saying. I like to follow the older guys
and then translated to the younger guys. So this year,
(01:30:09):
now of that, my roles changed a little bit. I
wanted to be more of a vocal leader. So now
I'm speaking more to the younger guys. Whether it's Defense
office or special teams, I'm trying to tap into the
younger guys and just give them a give him something
to look at at the end of the day.
Speaker 10 (01:30:21):
Virginie, back to fall camp and last year or just
kind of how you acted.
Speaker 4 (01:30:25):
Your junior confidence, things like that, and now where you're
at now, Just how can you see change than yourself
in this camps.
Speaker 6 (01:30:33):
Definitely, I'm more vocal.
Speaker 14 (01:30:34):
Like I feel like my freshman and sophomore year, I
wouldn't talk.
Speaker 6 (01:30:38):
Smack to the defense as much as I do this year.
Speaker 14 (01:30:40):
So I feel like that me talking smack not only
gives me a rush, but to give the guys behind
me on the offensive side of rush, because like I mentioned,
we only gonna go as far as the defense let
us go. So when we were at practice and we
were competing at a high level and we're talking smack,
I feel like that's the biggest change in my demeanor
this year.
Speaker 16 (01:30:56):
You're the only Dolph returning Russiers.
Speaker 10 (01:31:00):
He's the best rother than years.
Speaker 6 (01:31:02):
You see, I don't pay attention or none of that.
Speaker 14 (01:31:06):
Whether I was the third returning thousand yards, running back,
fIF tenth, first, none of that really matters to me
because at the end of the day, everybody can rush
for anybody can rush for a thousand yards.
Speaker 6 (01:31:16):
It's it's who gonna do it again.
Speaker 14 (01:31:18):
So I'm trying to come back this year, put another
thousand for my team and just keep going on with
my goals.
Speaker 10 (01:31:23):
There's on in regard for that.
Speaker 3 (01:31:25):
You know, there's a hype real from that play.
Speaker 2 (01:31:27):
From everybody around.
Speaker 15 (01:31:28):
It's kind of talking about your gain every street, the
returning one thousand yard Russian.
Speaker 14 (01:31:32):
You said, the hype real, like can I live up
to it? I believe so I can. But like I mentioned,
I don't really pay attention too much to that because
like it really doesn't mean anything rushing for a thousand
yards one year, then you come back the next year
and you don't do it.
Speaker 6 (01:31:47):
So I kind of lead that to.
Speaker 14 (01:31:48):
The fans and political side. So I just stay in
my lane, do what I do on the field, come
back and work again, work at it like I'm mad man.
Speaker 6 (01:31:58):
That's my dog team. But nah Arts looks real good.
Speaker 14 (01:32:04):
He's he's doing a better job also U of being
a vocal leader, whether it's to the defense or offense.
He's he's definitely stepped up and he's playing a major role.
And he know how I'm he know what's at stake
whenever it comes to him being in that backfield. So
he's doing a great job of tapping into everybody. With
a young guy, older guy, he's tapping into everybody.
Speaker 16 (01:32:24):
You talking about having that healthy what does it mean
to be on nactrope Walker watch list with CJ.
Speaker 6 (01:32:31):
Just like the thousand yard Rusher.
Speaker 14 (01:32:33):
I don't really pay attention to it because he's just
to watch list. At the end of the day, it's
nothing setting stone. Not nobody's saying you're gonna win it.
So I'm gonna let my work do the talk do
the talking. And I'm just really happy to have CJ.
Bag though, Like, besides anything, I'm glad my brother's back.
Speaker 16 (01:32:49):
By what what does he bring out of the facts?
Speaker 14 (01:32:52):
What he bring we the thing, the thing about me
and Sidy. We we came in together, so it it's
nothing like being able to play with the running back
that you came into college with. You know, he went
down last year, so that kind of tilted things. But
just being able to have him back in the room
with us and me and him attacking defenses like we're
about to is gonna be crazy.
Speaker 6 (01:33:12):
So that's what he brings.
Speaker 1 (01:33:14):
As Trey Wisterer talking about Trey Wisder and about CJ.
Baxter and the rest of that offense, We'll be back
to wrap up today's edition of the program.
Speaker 2 (01:33:20):
On thirteen ound of The Zone
