(00:01):
And now Peard Media presents the DaveRigords Podcast The Dave Rigords Podcast. How
you doing Man? Yeah, thanksfor going earlier about it. Later tonight,
I was gonna have my mechanic comeover and look at my car.
I did a boy or move andI bought a sixty two Corvette about a
(00:22):
year and a half ago. AndI don't know shit about cars, so
when I have problems with it,it means mechanics and I'm like, god,
damn, this was a disaster.Have you got a picture, like
just on your phone of that car? I want to see this sixty two
Corvette, so let me see.Can you see it in the video?
Well? Oh you read one?Look at you? Oh that's sweet.
(00:44):
But see in the sixty two one, it's the last year they did that
with the door, and for somefucking reason, they didn't paint the doors,
so the door was the same coloras the car. That's your car
right there, that red and whiteone. That's a beauty. Thanks.
But yeah, like, I probablyshouldn't have bought a classic car when I
don't know crap about cars. Andany time I'm having something done, it's
(01:04):
luckily my mechanic is a friend ofmine, and he's crazy, like he
doesn't ever want to take money, and I'm like, dude, he does
that for his friends, and Ihave to have one hundred dollars bills ready
and stick them in his shirt pocketor he won't take them. And it's
like, I don't know what hasto be done to it. Well,
he said, it's the points.I don't even I've never even heard word
(01:25):
associated with a car, the points, because it was running sluggish and it
died on me on the freeway andthen when he looked at it, he
couldn't find the problem. For thelongest time, he said, Oh,
it's the points. They need tobe replaced. Have you ever heard the
word points in guards to a car? Okay, yeah, I never have
points. Yeah, it's if mymemory serves me, they're all part of
the the ignition. They're under thedistributor cap. It's not a hard thing
(01:49):
to do. Yeah, that's whathe said. He said, it's easy.
So, I mean if their partsare probably more expensive than the actual
installation. Although I've never looked underthe hood of a Corvette, but that's
a pretty easy thing to fix.Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
Like I said, one good thingabout having a friend. That's because you
know they're not screwing you saying well, you also need this and that,
because you know he doesn't really wantto charge me anyway. So you could
(02:13):
always invite San Diego's great mechanic,Chris Boyer over to your house. Take
a look at he's pretty handy witha wrench and a screwdriver. Yeah,
that's why I never understood he didn'tgo and get like some really cool like
a fifty seven Chevy instead of awhat's that jeep thing he had? It's
a jeep. It's a jeep.It's a fancy jeep. He's got a
fancy jeep. Yeah, he didhave for years. I think he had
(02:36):
more than one. He had Chevell's. He raced Chevelle's when he was racing
into ca Hoon Speedway. How wasyour holiday? Did you have a nice
time? It was good? Butyou know what's funny, I want to
ask you, did you and Iknow the answer to this it's gonna piss
me off. Not really. Didyou watch either of those two movies,
The Holdovers or Spirited? No,I haven't. I haven't seen either one.
(02:57):
And I'll tell you why. Thisis the stupidest thing. A couple
of years ago, before COVID,I was whining on my radio show,
and I did this more than once. I said, why don't these movie
companies release movies into the theaters butalso release them on pay per view.
We'll pay fifty bucks so we canstay home and watch the movies in the
(03:21):
comfort of our home. I wouldsay this all the time. Then they
started doing it. I think COVIDcaused it to happen, right, And
they're twenty bucks, and I'm like, that's too much. And I'm an
idiot because I know that two ticketsfor a movie are more than twenty bucks.
And then you're gonna get snacks andstuff like that, and you gotta
go, oh blah blah blah blah. So I'm just a paint in the
ass. No, I haven't seenThe Holdovers yet. That's the one I
(03:45):
definitely wanted to see. Yeah,I accidentally pressed this button on the microphone.
And is it supposed to be blue? It's supposed to have a blue
light. I don't know. You'rethe one that gave me this thing.
Well that's really gave me. Pressthe button, the light goes to the
other side and it's got like aheart symbol. The microphone literally has one
button on it. I know whatI happened to touch it, and I
(04:06):
press the button. You shouldn't touchbuttons. Josh, just sit there and
look pretty buddy. Well, you'reready to talk about movies here in this
new year. Yep. We havea category today where we were going to
discuss the best dance scene. We'renot talking about musicals. We are not
talking about musicals, but sometimes adance scene breaks out and a movie doesn't
(04:29):
it. Yep, exactly. AndYou've chosen your five favorites, and I've
got my five favorites. I shouldpoint out you're a big deal. You're
on the radio, you're on Cogo, and you've been in the reader,
and everybody loves you. And you'rethe only movie critic in San Diego anymore?
Is there anyone else? Is thereanyone else reviewing movies in San Diego
anymore? Yeah? I think there'sa woman on kpbass that she does them.
(04:51):
That doesn't count. That's that's volunteerradio. I don't know what that
is. That's good volunteer radio. It's not good old commercial radio. Yeah.
And then it's a shame too, because the Reader used to have a
critic and now they he just periodicallydoes reviews. Well do they do?
They pay people at the Reader,Yeah, they do. Well. You
(05:11):
know what's funny. When I workedfor the Reader, people were surprised when
I would tell them, yeah,I'm excited they used one of my cover
stories because I get three thousand dollarsextra and they're like, what you get
three thousand dollars for cover story?Like yeah, They're like, but the
Reader's free, and I'm like, yes, but they have advertisements, sure,
yeah, yeah. Is the Readerstill being printed? Yeah, but
it's a lot smaller because they allhaving a lot of problems all you know,
(05:33):
sports illustrateds going out of business andut and yell lights. I mean,
you know, print media. Everything'sa mess with media. You know
a little bit about that. Well, yeah, I worked in media forever
and ever. I'm still in media. I ain't come on, I'm a
podcast right now. But the actualnewspapers and magazines they're going to be about
the size of those little tiny booksyou'd get out of cracker Jack anymore.
(05:53):
I mean they're getting so small theycan't help it. Obviously. It's a
you know, it's it's a waningbusiness, but people still love it.
It is. I mean, thinkabout it when we were kids and we
get the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue. Now a kid, if he wants to
see women in swimsuits or less, they could just look at things online.
Yeah, kids today can't wait forthe magazine to come to mom and dad's
(06:15):
house. Come on, Josh, wake up. It's twenty twenty four.
Bat Well, we're gonna talk aboutour five favorite dance scenes here in just
a second. But the name ofthis podcast is I don't know, it's
been over a year. Two asholestalking about movies? Is that way?
We decided that's good. A coupleof Josh and I are a couple of
guys in media. He's he's workedin radio and TV and magazines and newspapers,
(06:40):
and I'm just a radio guy formany, many years. But we
both love the movies, and welike to talk about the movies, and
we sometimes agree, we sometimes don't. We both like cigars. So what
are you gonna what are you gonnaenjoy with today's discussion of movies. I'm
gonna smoke my Father's cigar, oneof my favorite brands. And what's interesting
is they have two rings on it. I always wonder when a cigar.
(07:03):
Once in a while, we'll seea cigar that has two different rings,
and you're like, do they thinkthat's going to be more fancy because they
have a second ring on it?Right? And it's also funny because my
father Cigars is a great name fora cigar company, yet my father smoked
crappy white owls. Oh yeah, those are made out of old newspapers.
I think, yeah, well, you and your fancy two rings. I've
(07:27):
got one that's got three on it. Can you see that? All Monte
Crystal. Then there's a mid labelhere that's says Chicago on it, and
then there's a whole blanket on thebottom. I was visiting my hometown,
Chicago, and they had these limitededition Monte Cristo Chicago's, and so I
got these and I enjoy these.I'll be having that so funny that you
(07:48):
have one of those. I've nevereven heard of that cigar. But I
was at a cigar lounge a coupleof weeks ago, and if you could
see my background, I put abunch of cigar boxes on my office wall,
and they had one of those cargoboxes, and it looks so cool
because the word Chicago is a trumpetor something, and I just thought that
was so clever how it looks likea trumpet on the cigar box. Yeah,
(08:09):
and I was like, oh,I got to get one of those.
So it's like, I'm thinking,do I want to order a box
of those cigars just so I couldget the box and put them on my
wall. Yeah, it'll probably bedecent smokes, but still, you know,
a limited edition. Well, so, as I said, we're talking
about a dance scene that breaks outin a movie that's not a musical,
all right, And I struggle withthis a little bit. In fact,
(08:30):
Josha, you know, sometimes weshould we should tell people. Sometimes we
tell each other ahead of time whatour picks are because we choose our five
favorites for whatever the category is.And sometimes we tell each other what our
picks are, and sometimes we don't. This time I did, and you
said, you know, I thinkyou've you've got one of your picks.
There is a mistake, and soI had to do some shuffling around.
(08:52):
So I appreciate that, and I'mglad that you showed me yours because I
had one of yours on mine, your Napoleon dyna which is I probably have
said that because you're going to listthem, and I was like, oh
damn, I was gonna use thepullyon dynamite. Yeah, well, let's
let's start with that. You wantto you want to be giving a pullyon
dynamite? Yeah? Did you seethat? Did you see Napoleon Dynamite?
(09:13):
Oh? Yeah, I loved it. Okay, So this is the funniest
thing. You know, my kidsthey were much younger when Napoleon Dynamite came
out, and it was kind ofan MTV movie. In fact, I
think it might actually be the MTVpeople who put that on. And this
movie came out, and obviously itwas different. It was weird. It
was something unusual, and they said, you got to watch this, and
I remember one of my kids wassaying, Dad, you're not gonna like
(09:35):
this. You're just it's gonna bestupid. You're not gonna like it.
And so I watched and I saidit's stupid and I don't like it.
And we got to work the nextday and we were talking about it and
someone said, do you remember thatscene where he's feeding the lama? You
know, they come get some hamand I was like, yeah, that
was funny. And then someone elsesaid, you remember that scene where you
know Uncle Rico or whatever his namewas on the phone. I was like,
(09:56):
yeah, that was funny, andlike three or four more of these,
and I was like, I lovethat movie. It turns out I
thought it was stupid, and Iloved that movie. It's such a great
movie. But I could see howsomebody would watch it and think, well,
this humor is so bizarre because thesecharacters are weird. Last year,
I went to a thing in Escondidowhere the cast of the movie was showing
the film and then answering questions frompeople. And that dance scene that's on
(10:20):
your list is when Pedro row wasdoing his dance, noted John Heater.
It was John Heater, and hesaid he used to do that dance at
high school and in college to makepeople laugh. But anyway, at the
end of at the end of thismovie, Napoleon Dynamite and these are old
movies, so we're not spoiling anyone'sanyone's fun here. John Heater, who
(10:41):
has never in any part of themovie given any indication that he was athletic
or flexible or artistic or anything likethat breaks out into this crazy, like
three minute dance routine and you don'tsee it coming. So it's kind of
fun and that's why I it mademy pick there. So that's one.
And what's also great about that iswhen I was thinking about my list,
(11:03):
I didn't put this on my list, but I think there was an eighties
movie called Can't Buy Me Love wherethis nerdy guy which ends up becoming Patrick
Dempsey in real life, who wasn'tso nerdy. He was just voted the
sexiest man. Yeah, me toknow how to dance. So we watches
some show on TV, but it'slike some African mating ritual. So of
course when he does the dance, thinking he's cool, he actually looks stupid.
(11:26):
And that's what made the Napoleon Dynamiteseem so great is we know his
character's nerdy, so we're thinking he'sgoing to go on stage and look like
a complete ridiculous nut job. Hebust out some cool moves. Yeah,
it's a big surprise, and it'sa lot of fun. And the point
of view of the audience, they'reall standing there staring, They're just sitting
there in these in these you know, high school meetings, what are they
(11:46):
called the when you've got to getall the high school I believe the assembly.
They're all sitting there and they're juststaring. All of a sudden they
go crazy at the end. Soit's kind of fun. We can all
back to those assemblies. So that'snumber one. Number two on my list
here is going to be Young Frankensteinwhen Doctor Frankenstein and the Monster get together
(12:07):
and they show up at the bigtheater with all the fancy lords and ladies
and he's introducing the monster and they'rein tuxedos and then they just start singing
Putting on the Ritz. That's sogreat. It's such a great scene.
You know, a lot of timeswhen you see people like mel Brooks in
(12:28):
an interview, they get asked thesame type of questions. I would love
to ask him, things like wasthat the first song you came up with?
Because I can't think of a bettersong that that would work with that.
Frankenstein just has that one line anyputting on the room and he can
barely say it, yes, Oh, it's just so great. Well,
(12:48):
the legend on Young Frankenstein is thatJean and mel were writing this together as
a collaborative effort at some hotel hellthat Jane was staying at. And Jean
had a couple of conditions on themovie, and he said, condition number
(13:09):
one is Mel, you can't bein it. Imagine that, Imagine you
being mel Brooks, because you knowMel likes to do small cameo roles in
all his movies. And Jean saidto him, you can't be in this
movie. What's the point of that? Why? I don't know why he
said that. But another one washe had written out this dance scene to
(13:31):
mel took one look at it andsaid, forget it. This isn't in.
It's stupid. And any went backand forth and back and forth,
and they were fighting, and finallyJean said, if it's not in,
I quit. And that's when melBrooks said, Okay, now I know
you're passionate about it. It's in. And of course it became, you
know, one of the signature movementmoments of the movie. Well, you
know that actually makes Melbrooks sound badif he didn't think that was funny,
(13:54):
that scene, like, how doyou watch that scene and I think it's
funny? Like you don't always knowyou don't I listen. I can tell
you, for one hundred years,I did this radio show and I would
come up with this bit and I'dbe looking at it on paper and I'm
like, man, this is goingto carry me all day long. This
is going to be the easiest showI've ever done in my life. And
I go out and I do it, and it flops, It goes absolutely
(14:16):
nowhere, and then I've got somethrowaway thing that we did. And that's
all I can hear about all daylong from everyone who is listening to the
show about how great it is.You can't always I mean, you just
can't always tell what's going to bea hit and what's not. Yeah,
that's good point. Good point.I mean, there are the halls are
filled with singers and actors who didn'twant to take a part, and so
(14:41):
they didn't and then it becomes anAcademy Award, or it becomes the Grammy
or like for Examp. I'll giveyou an example. My Heart Will Go
On by Celine Dion. That isone of the most famous songs in the
history of not only songs but movies, and James Cameron didn't want it.
(15:01):
He did not want a singing songin his movie, but they convinced him
to put it in, and youknow what a monster song that is?
Right, But that actually makes moresense. He's not wanting a song in
the movie and he's thinking, look, it's supposed to be back in nineteen
ten or was it nineteen ten oreleven? I don't know, But that
makes a little more sense than lookingat a scene and just not thinking it's
(15:22):
funny. Like what did No Brooksnot think was funny about that? Okay?
Like that brings me to a verygood point. I'm glad you said
that, because perhaps James Cameron wastrying to stay in the period. Right.
This is why you're not gonna findDirty Dancing on my list. You're
(15:43):
not gonna mind Dirty Dancing anywhere onmy list because Dirty Dancing is a period
piece. It's set in the earlyto mid nineteen sixties, and they're at
this I don't know, it's someweird summer camp. I gotta tell you,
I'm not a big fan of DirtyDancing, but theyre at some weird
kind of summer camp where apparently thefamilies get together and put on skits throughout
this thing. And the signature songis this Jennifer WARN's Bill the Ridley Bill
(16:11):
Medley song Yeah, which came outin the middle eighties and had a completely
middle eighties sound. It sounded nothinglike the music was on in the sixties,
and it stands like a I can'tget past it. My willing suspension,
that disbelief will not allow me tosit there and accept these two singing
(16:33):
and dancing to the great, bigshuddering climax of the movie, which is
a song that isn't going to comeout for another twenty years in history.
And that's why I just I'm notgoing to put it on my list.
I hate to admit that I likethat movie, but you rang up a
valid point. I read a thingonce that somebody had a problem with Jennifer
Gray having cut off jean shorts becausethose weren't around in that time, in
(16:53):
nineteen sixty one or whatever. ButI thought, maybe you didn't like it
because you hear Cousin Brucie in it, like a DJ was overrated. You
know, he's in New York DJ, and I don't know too much about
those guys, so I don't knowenough to like him or not out.
But I did read though that JenniferGray and Patrick Patrick Swayze did not get
(17:17):
along in that movie. Well, what happened is I read Jennifer Gray's book.
They had done a movie before,Yeah, and he was throwing firecrackers
at her door. It was kickingher up and scaring the crap out of
her because you hear fireworks going offat your front door at three am.
And so she kept him off themovie. And then he had to go
(17:37):
to her and say please that theydon't want to hire me because they hired
you and you don't want me,as she took him. So, yeah,
all right, very good. So, Young Frankenstein, that's my second
choice. Number three a dance scenethat breaks out in a movie that's not
a musical. Number three for meis going to be Tom Cruise, risky
business. Any thoughts on that, the famous Tom Cruise in his underwear with
(18:00):
old time rock and rolling Bob Seger. Yeah, so he was jumping on
his couch in his underwear before hewent to the Oprah Show. Yeah,
that's right. Yeah, it's agood scene. You know, you know,
it's funny. I never really caredfor that Bob Seger song. There's
some Bob Seger songs I like, but I don't know if it's because and
you know this, Dave, withclassic rock radio, you can get really
tired of songs really fast, andold time rock and roll was one of
(18:22):
those songs. And so I don'tlove the scene, but it's perfect for
that movie. It's like the parentsare out of town, you're blast in
the stereo and you know, didyou ever hear this story about Bob Seger
was given that song to do.He didn't write it, and he added
a few verses in the song, and so I think two songwriters wrote it
(18:45):
and they said, hey, we'llgive you a writing credit, and he's
like, now, I don't worryabout it. And because he refused the
writing credit, he says he probablywould have made about forty five million dollars.
You never turned down a writing credit, you see credit. But there's
another example of a guy go on, eh, this isn't gonna be anything,
and it's his biggest hit song ever, and you know it's his biggest
hit song ever because of that scenein that movie. I mean, it
(19:07):
was a fine song. It wasa hit song, but it wasn't the
monster thing that it became. Afterrisky business and it's also because it's not
that hideous turned the page. Whatyou hear every day on classic rock radio.
Oh I know, all right.Number four on my list here of
dance scenes is going to be DespicableMe. Did you see that coming?
Josh Borg? Did you see DespicableMe coming your way? I did not.
(19:30):
I didn't have you pegged for ananimated film. I love animated movies,
but for a dance scene. Imean, because didn't you want was
it you that was one time tellingme how much you loved the silverware dancing
in Yeah, so yeah, Imaybe I should have expected it, But
I like Despicable Me, but Ido not, for the life of me
remember a dance scene in it wasit Dominions? What was what? It's
(19:53):
everybody, as you may or maynot recall, gru who ends up with
these three little girl rolls. Hesort of adopts these three little girls,
and they have a dancer title togo to. And the little one,
the tiniest little one with those greatbig eyes, she wants grew to be
there for the dance recitle and they'relooking backstage and they're hoping that he's going
to be there. Well, Greois off busy trying, I think to
(20:17):
put the moon back. Remember theydid this whole caper where they shrunk the
moon. They stole the moon. They had this machine that could shrink things
down anyway. Grew had to putthe moon back. And by the time
he got back from putting the moonback and saving the world, he rushes
back. He crash lands his rocketat the recital, and the dance recital
(20:38):
is over. He's missed it,and it's a heartbreaking moment. He had
to sacrifice the thrill of his adopteddaughters seeing him in the audience because they're
looking out and they see the emptyseat. And then they all get together
at the end and they do aspecial performance just for Grew, and they
bring they bring Grew up on stageand he too, suddenly does Napoleon dynamite.
(21:02):
He knows how to dance. Theminions are in, the girls are
dancing. One of the minions hasheadphones on, he's a DJ, and
the whole that's how the movie endswith a great big dance. So okay,
that's what I love. That asimpressive though, when a cartoon character
is doing those Napoleon Dynamite moves, because you could do anything with animation.
I love that movie and those minionsso much that I believed the minions and
(21:26):
grew were real. Whatever the lastone and again another surprise scene at the
end of the movie. Why,I was like, wow, and I
loved this movie because of the end. I thought this movie my fifth choice.
Here was rough. I thought itwas really tough. I thought that,
(21:47):
you know, here's this family. They're struggling, they don't get along,
they're dysfunctional, they're out on thiscrusade with their daughter, and it
all comes together so beautifully at theend. And it's the dance scene of
little Miss Sunshine where she comes outon stage and suddenly we realize that her
(22:11):
grandfather, who has been coaching herall along on her dance moves, has
taught her to be a pole dancingstripper. And how old is Abigail Breslin,
do you guess in this movie?Seven? Something like that a child,
And she goes out there and doesthis incredible dance and the whole thing
is going sideways, and you know, they're shutting her down there saying you
(22:34):
can't do that. And this poorfamily, which is at their wits end
and they're not getting along and allof a sudden, Greg kinnear comes up
on stage with her, and PaulDano goes up on stage, and the
whole family gets up there and startsgyrating. And you don't see it coming.
There's no one in the world whosaw that ending scene coming, and
(22:55):
it made it a happy ending forthat movie. I loved it. You
got I think what everybody I mean. It was a great movie. It
was one of my favorites of theyear when it came out, and Alan
Arkin is Alan Arkin and Jack Lemonare my two favorite comedic actors. Oh
great, so great. And what'sgreat also about that scene is I think
everybody watching it knows that the peoplerunning these things, these child beauty pageants
(23:15):
and dance competitions are horrible, Likethey don't care what they're putting the kids
through. And so to see themget their come up and buy a kid
doing something like that and ruining theirbig event is a nice thing for the
audience. Do I misremember this wasAlan Arkin the character of the grandfather.
Was he on Heroin? Was heshooting Heroin on this family trip? I
(23:38):
don't recall. I just remember hewas not the best person for some reason
or another. I mean, Imean he was, but he I know
what you mean. Yeah, aginga seven year old how to be as
a provocative strip dancer, right,But I think he was. He was
the one who was paying attention tothis little girl. Yeah, that's true.
And he was also the one thatI think saw that Greg Kenare was
(24:00):
kind of a dick, and hewould sometimes call him out on that.
I think if I remember, right, Oh, this family when they get
in the car, the car thatdoesn't work, and you just you want
to strangle the car. It's likea nineteen sixty two Corvette with bad points.
You want to strangle. Uh.And the sun I think he's taken
an oath of silence because his acceptanceto the Air Force Academy has been turned
(24:26):
down, and everybody's miserable. They'rejust except for this little girl. She's
so excited about going to the dancecompetition, and that it just goes completely
sideways because she goes up there tobe a stripper and the family. You
just made me think of something youtalked about. I think it was the
Steve Carell character had the vow ofsilence or whatever. Why don't these protesters
(24:47):
that block roads do that instead?Of blocking roads and having their signs just
take a vow of silence to protest. Oh, don't get me, don't
get me started. So those aremy five right there, reminding you they
are Napoleon Dynamite. These are whatI think are five movies with surprised dance
scenes in them. They're not musicals, and you know they're not Singing in
(25:08):
the rain anything like that. UhSo Napoleon Dynamite, Risky Business, Young
Frankenstein, Despicable Me, and LittleMiss Sunshine. All right, do you
have an honorable mention you could throwin so you can do an extra six?
I don't, but I'm anxious tohear yours, So okay, bring
it on. I thought for sureyou'd throw in some kind of Carry Grant
(25:29):
thing because he's he's obviously danced inmovies. I can't think of I can't
think of one that he has.But really, yeah, okay, look,
look, I like Carry Grant, but I'm not. I'm not just
gonna throw them out there just becauseI like Carry Grant. I know,
but I thought you're sure credibility theyhad seen Like I was just talking to
a woman the other day. Herfavorite movie is The Philadelphia story, and
(25:51):
uh, that's Carry Grant, right, Carry Grant, Catherine Hepburn and Jimmy
Stewart. And again, it's oneof those things where I haven't seen it
and I feel like Kerry Grant's theone actor I need to revisit or visit
his library of work. All right, So my first dance thing is going
to be the most recent one,and it's easily the most talked about dance
scene on the internet right now.It is the scene in Saltburn when I
(26:17):
don't know how to pronounce the actor'sname, Barry Coogan. He's an Irish
actor, really weird looking. Youhaven't seen Saltburn, have you? No?
I haven't. But is he nudein this thing? Is that that
was dancing nude in the scene. And I won't say what happens because it
could be a spoiler alert, butsome event happens that makes him really excited.
(26:38):
So he dances through the house naked. It's it's like one step above
your Tom Cruise in his underwear. He's like, Nope, I'm going to
be completely naked dancing. And it'sjust people are really polarized by the scene.
And he said in interviews that hedidn't use any prosthetics. That's really
him naked, and there's a coupleof scenes with him like a giant watt
or something like that. Well, yeah, you can't see it as well
(27:00):
in the dance scene, but earlierin the scene, earlier in the movie,
you do see it and they makereference to it. Bit. My
next one is going to be equallydisturbing in the dance scene department. It's
Reservoir Dogs. Did you ever seethat Tarantino's first movie? I know,
I know what, I know ascene you've chosen here. Yes, So,
so Michael Mattson finds out they're doingthis heist. They find out this
(27:22):
undercover cop was part of their crew, so he ties him to a chair
and he basically is going to torturehim while he's dancing the Steelers wheels Stuck
in the Middle with You and Dave, you could probably appreciate this that not
only is it great that they're usingStuck in the Middle with You, which
is a great song. Paul Simononce said that's his favorite song that he
hasn't written, but the fact thatStephen Wright, the DJ, that's this
(27:47):
monotone low key He's a low keycomedian that has these one liners, you
know, and he's the DJ.I mean, he's the type of DJ
that a program director would say,can you get a little more excited when
your play from Garrett Raff? There? You know what's funny? The guy
in that scene, Michael Matson.I was at a party in Rancho,
Santa Fe, a Halloween party, and there was a band playing and they
(28:07):
were doing a bunch of classic rockcovers and the singer was a real young
kid. And at one point he'sgetting food and I'm getting food and I
say, your man sounds great.I said, is this what you do
full time? And he said no, I'm a manager And I said,
oh, what are you managing it? He says, a bunch of actors.
I have like thirty actors I managed. And I said, oh,
anybody I've heard of it? Andhe goes, well, my two biggest
are Michael Madson and Virginia Matson, who was beautiful and sideways. And so
(28:30):
this is a Halloween party, right, So they had different bowls with body
parts and it was really cool infaint blood. So I took a rubber
ear and I said, hey, would you have Michael Madson autographed? This
for me, and he laughed. He goes, yeah, he's autographed years
before. And I'm like he has, Like he's because he cut off an
ear in that scene where he's dancing. Sorry to spoil it for anybody.
So he says, yeah, hangon to it and here's my card,
(28:51):
send it to me. I said, great, And the next night,
when I'm looking through my blazer,I can't find his card or the ear
and I didn't even have my todrink, but I can't find a rubber
ear that I stole from the partyor his business card. So otherwise I
would have had a rubber ear signedby Michael Madson. I enjoyed that story
so much the first time you toldit on this podcast. Oh he's recycling
(29:12):
stories now, folks. Can youbelieve it, that's what he's doing.
Yes, you've told us the MichaelMadson fake ear story. Yes, indeed,
I'll met this guy and he representspeople Michael and Virginia Madson, which
I have signed his ear. I'mso clever. What's really weird about that
is it's not even that great ofa story. Again. Yeah, that's
(29:37):
okay, my bad. Listen, but listen that scene, that scene where
he cuts that cops ere off.Oh that is the I mean, can
you hear that song? Anytime youhear that song, don't you just pure
Michael Madson doing that weird creepy dancearound the cop that he's got tired of
the chair, and don't forget he'spoured gasoline all over him, and oh,
it's so dark. It's so dark. I think when people get tortured
(30:00):
in movies, it's just we allput ourselves in that situation and we think,
what would we do? And youcan't do anything you're tied to a
chair, So it's it makes itall the more painful. He tortures this
poor cop for hours on end,and then Chris Penn just walks in and
goes that guy just shoots him.Oh that is a rough movie, let
me tell you it is. SoMy next dance scene is going to be
(30:26):
one that I'm sure you've seen.Have you seen Hitch with Will Smith and
Kevin James. Yeah. I thinkit's a really fun, romantic comedy and
it's just great that he's trying toteach Kevin James to dance, and Kevin
James thinks he has the moves andWill Smith is just kind of looking at
him like, yeah, no.And I love that they're playing this usher
(30:47):
song that's we're probably gonna hear onthe Super Bowl. But and it's also
the first time Will Smith slapped anybodyeither on screen or okay, lapped him
when he tried to do the dancemove, saying no, don't don't do
your own stuff. You just youknow, keep it simple, move your
hips and you're good. Another dancescene I'm gonna pick is the movie,
and I'm sure you haven't seen it, which is a shame because it's great.
(31:07):
Five Hundred Days of Summer. JosephGordon Levitt is working writing greeting cards
and they hire Zoey Dashnel and hereally likes her, but she doesn't have
doesn't want anything to do with him. She's not ready for a relationship.
He finally gets her to go outwith him because they were doing karaoke and
he was making her laugh. You'resaying her name is Dashnel. I don't
(31:30):
know how to say it. Zoeydeanelanel. That's what I always said.
But I'm you know, I'm notthe movie critic for the reader. What
do I know? I don't getone time I was reviewing a movie on
Kogo and I said, I can'tsay that director's name, and my mom
calls me and goes, maybe youshould learn how to say it before you
go on the air. Mother,Good advice, mother, that's right,
(31:53):
yes, exactly. Anyway, backto your movie. So he finally sleeps
with her, and he's leaving herplay and he gets his brief case,
he puts his tie on. Ashe's walking down the street, they start
playing Hall of Notes, what's theYou make my Dreams Come True? And
as he's dancing, everybody around himstarts dancing the mail man. All these
(32:13):
people that you think are just youknow, extras, But obviously it's something
that Debbie Allen or somebody had tochoreograph because it's such a brilliant dance and
he's actually a good dancer. Iremember once when he hosted Saturday Live,
he did this dancerro team. Sothe dance is just perfect, and they
have birds flying in the air, these animated birds. Really funny. Now
the last one I'm picking, I'mnot even sure if I remember this scene
(32:37):
exactly right. And I didn't evengo to Google and make sure I got
the right movie. But I thinkit was the first Batman in like nineteen
eighty nine and Jack Nicholson played theJoker, and to me, I like
those superhero movies when like Heath Ledgerwas great in the Dark Knight and The
Dark Knight was a great one.But there's something about them when they still
(32:58):
had a comic book feel. WhenJack Nicholson's the Joker, it's not all
about, you know, how gorycan we get and how evil can these
characters get. It still felt likea comic book. And he goes into
an art gallery the Joker does, and he starts ruining all these famous paintings,
Monet's, and he's just throwing painton him and he has a boombox
and they're playing print, some printsong well as he's dancing around, Yeah,
(33:22):
ruining pain dance song. Yeah, the bad dance song. Yeah.
Oh is that what it's called. It's something like that. Yeah. Yeah.
It's funny when you find out later, Like I didn't know at the
time that was a Prince song,And one time I saw the soundtrack and
I said, oh, that wasPrince And it's the same like risky Business.
I think they play a print songat one point when he turns his
mom's house into a brothel. AndI didn't know at the time, and
(33:43):
that was Prince. I mean,I don't think Prince was famous when Risky
Business came out. So yeah, and for honorable mention, I've got to
pick Jack Black. Did you eversee the movie High Fidelity where he works
at a record store? Yep,you did see that. Yeah. I
love the premise of record store guyswanting to critique the music you buy,
(34:05):
and people come in for a lineof richie album and they're making fun of
one of these Because unless you likesome punk band like Stiff Little Fingers or
you know, Social Distortion, you'renot cool, are you? Are you
edging towards Katrina and the Waves.Yes, you're telling another story again.
This is the second time you've toldthat story from that scene about Katrina and
(34:28):
the Waves. Come on, man, we're not recycling our bit. We've
only been on for a year. We're not recycling our bits. Guess why
would I have brought up a dancescene in a movie? Then? Why
you did it before? How elsewould I? How would I know that
you were getting to the Jack BlackKatrina and the Waves unless you had told
me that is so weird. Imean, we've done topics from the top
(34:51):
fives and we never did a danceone. Did we No, I don't
think we did. But go aheadwith your with your story for those who
didn't see the first podcast. Sothere's just something about Jack Black who's being
so cynical of every customer that doesn'tbuy some obscure punk or grunge band.
Yeah, but he loves blasting Katrinain the Waves walking on Sunshine to start
(35:13):
his Monday because it's just a greatsong. And I like when people that
are music snobs can admit that sometimeswe have guilty pleasures. I mean,
I like some of the yacht rock. I like Dancing Queen by Abba.
You know, even though I likea lot of these other scure punk bands
and classic rock bands, that stuffis good too. Will you listen to
Dancing Queen in your nineteen sixty twoCorvette with the windows down? Or do
(35:37):
the windows have to be up sono one can tell? That is a
good point. I think if youhave a cool car, it doesn't really
matter what you're listening to. Butalso the fact that the radio is the
original, It's an original AM radio, so I wouldn't be able to play
any of my music unless it's goingto be some talk station. Is that?
Is that right? Well, youprobably just listen to tapes of yourself
(35:59):
telling stories sixdrag Koguo, where youare heard weekday mornings reviewing great movies like
Salt Burn and Hey, what isgoing to be? By the way,
your prediction? What's going to bethe runaway movie of twenty twenty four so
far? Because I have a moviethat I'm excited to go see and I
wonder if you've seen it yet.Okay, I'm curious as to what that
(36:20):
is. Because the one thing thatalways gets me if I do interviews,
like sometimes I'll get a call froma station in like Australia and they want
me to talk movies, and Idon't even know how they got my name,
but I do it, and they'llalways end with what movies are you
looking forward to? And I'm like, uh uh, because I never know
what's coming out, like unless Isee trailers, and at the screenings for
the critics, they don't show trailers, so a lot of times I don't
(36:42):
even know what's coming out until itcomes out. Well, this movie is
out already, It's been out fora while and I hear very little talk
about it. But it's Godzilla minusone minus one, I guess. Yeah.
Yeah, So every critic in mycritics groups that have seen it love
it. Yeah, and I thinkit about like ninety eight percent on Rotten
Tomatoes. Yeah. How do youfeel How do you feel about I mean
(37:05):
it's it's a completely Japanese movie, made in Japan by the Japanese, so
it's all subtitles. How do youfeel about that? Can you see something?
No? Okay, I would liketo hear Blue Oyster coltscott Zilla plate
in it, which I'm sure doesn'thappen. Marto Robbie does not get an
Academy Award nomination for pretending to beBarbie. Any outrage for that, No,
none at all, Because I amone of the few people it wasn't
(37:29):
that impressed with Barbie. It hada few laughs, but I thought it
was kind of disappointing. Did yousee it? I saw it, and
I thought it was you know,it's another one of those movies where when
you hear it's coming out, you'relike, oh, come on, how
can that be a movie? Isaid that about the Lego movie. Oh
come on how can that be amovie? And it was wonderful. I
saw Barbie, and I thought itwas pretty clever. I enjoyed watching it,
(37:50):
I really did. I have moreand more respect for Ryan Gosling every
day when I see him, becausemy introduction to him was this sullen,
moody guy in the Notebook, whichwas just fucking awful. But when I
see him now, I really enjoyhis work. I like him. I
thought he was just would and Ithought he was a one dimensional guy,
(38:12):
one trick Bonnie. But I reallylike him a lot now. Yeah,
I thought Barbie, like the openingwith the two thousand and one was so
brilliant, and the ending had thatfunny joke about her going to see her
guy in a cologist that knocked itout of the park. But I thought
the dance sequences were kind of goofy, and I thought it should have had
more of the fun like we hadwith the Lego movie, where it's like,
I thought it was cute in thebeginning how she's not taking she's taking
a shower and there's no water,so we immediately think, okay, it's
(38:35):
like the way a kid would holda toy and they just go to their
car without it was clever. Yeah, thought it could have been better,
So I don't think it was reallya snub. I mean I think a
bigger stub would be the director ofThe Holdovers not getting nominated for Best Director
for making a great film, whereasGreta Gerrigg. Her better movie I thought
was Ladybird, which came out fiveyears ago, and she got nominated for
(38:58):
that. So I object to theword snub too, because it's like that
is when someone says, oh,I got snubbed for my Academy award.
Oh did you feel entitled that youwere owed something? And there's no promises
in this Well, also, becauseit's not a committee of five dudes voting
on it. There's like eleven thousandmembers of the Academy, so they're all
(39:22):
getting together going, hey, let'snot vote for Greta. She's a new
director, she's a female. Andalso, what people always forget, there
were ten movies dominated for Best Pictureand only five directors, so technically you
can say five directors got snubbed. You know, it's funny because Leonardo DiCaprio
didn't get nominated for Killers of theFlower Moon, but d Niro did and
literally Gladstone from that movie and MartinScorsese the director. So people are saying
(39:44):
Leonardo DiCaprio got snubbed, and Ithought he was miscast in that he was
a little too old and I didn'tcare for him minute, but it was
funny. When Titanic came out,I immediately thought of this. Recently,
everybody in Titanic got nominated except tokeep audio, everybody, even the government
and violin on the deck. Yes, Titanic, the Old Lady, the
Old Lady was in eight minutes ofit. She was in an eight minute
(40:07):
part and she got nominated. Andso you know, and that year I
thought Mark Wahlberg got snubbed, notsnubbed, but you know, for not
getting nominated for Boogie Knights. Buteverybody was talking about DiCaprio. Means then,
so nobody knows what they're talking about. No promises, Well there they
are. Those are our five ten. When you ad him up eleven because
he can never stick to the five. There's always got an extra one.
(40:29):
But those are our five picks forwhat we thought were funny, unexpected dance
scenes in a movie that's not amusical. Now, the next time we
get together. Similarly, we aregoing to be discussing our five favorite songs
that are in a movie that's nota musical. Sometimes that happens. Sometimes
a song comes up in a movieit's not a musical at all, and
(40:50):
we'll be choosing our five favorites onthat when we get together next time.
Maybe his nineteen sixty two corvette willbe running by that exactly new set of
points. You're off to see Mannymullen Jack all right, Buddy, good
