Anybody can be a fan wonderable pull up Ray Shepherd,
good for Victor win min Yama. These guys are fanatics
and you Twosa has opened up my preseptly.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
This is the Fanatics. Look a bit into the Fanatics.
So this is beautiful Sunday morning in San Antonio, Texas.
I'm your host, Dylan Emory, along with Shane Carter. Not
too much going on in the sports world. I don't
know what we'll do for the next two hours. Who
am I kidding? There's a lot of headlines that we
will get to first and foremost. Hello, Good morning, Shane.
(00:46):
How are you?
Speaker 2 (00:47):
I'm good? Did you Was the drive okay for you?
Speaker 1 (00:49):
Oh? The drive's always good. This is the time of
day to drive in San Antonio.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Unless you're Tiger Woods.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
Unless you're Tiger Woods. You know, he's had so much
difficulty with one course in his life, Driver's head. Of course,
we'll get into that a little yeah, you know, he
used the wrong driver on Friday. There is I feel
bad too, because in the studio I've got Tiger looking
over my shoulder. I almost kind of want to put
him down, like on the side I forgot we had
(01:16):
Oh I didn't. That was the first thing I actually
thought of. When that, of course I texted you. I
was like, dude. And so when headlines break, I tend
to text Shane like you know, hey, you know, but
here on ticket seven sixty, we were already talking about it. Yeah,
you know, we'll get into that later because I do
have it's not my beef. I'll tell you that. I mean,
(01:36):
we've got our beefs that we'll have later in the
second hour. But it's not my beef. It's actually, you
know something that's it's a huge disappointment. I'll leave people
with the teas of that. Speaking of no disappointments, though,
how about these spurs?
Speaker 2 (01:52):
About them?
Speaker 1 (01:52):
How about them? You know yesterday taking care of business
against Milwaukee. That game wasn't even close, to be honest
with you, no, I won twenty seven to ninety five.
Uh you know. So their three game road trip this
week Monday in Miami one thirty six one eleven, Memphis
one twenty three ninety eighth, Milwaukee one twenty seven ninety
(02:14):
five to say that they're playing out of this world,
no pun intended, which, by the way, Prime Video, what
are we doing? They they do this thing. I don't
get the audio because I'm in the studio, but it's
some alien world that they do for Wimby. It's weird.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Yeah you heard you heard that?
Speaker 1 (02:31):
Yeah, well I've seen it and it's just it catches
myself and Carl off Guard.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
I think it's I think what is because remember this
is the first year Prime is having the NBA, so
they're trying to really push a lot of these that
kind of fun.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
Yeah, they keep pushing us up to the clock.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
Yeah, you know, I think I think, more than anything else,
is really just just to fill time because I think
they're still trying to get their bearings.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
It feels like.
Speaker 1 (02:51):
They are in, you know, yesterday they in. I got
a couple you know clips from that I want to
talk about because obviously Victor has been this uh he's
been headline this week in the NBA, which yeah, you
know for the Spurs and Spurs fans, we're not used
to being in the national spotlight and the headlines like that.
But Victor kind of did that after Monday, of course.
And for those of you who've lived under a rock,
(03:14):
Wemby made his case Monday after the win against Miami
and he basically came front and said, hey, fifty of
this game is defense and I am the leader in that.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
And to be honest with you, Dylan, NBA dot Com
kind of agrees. Have you seen the latest MVP odds
according to NBA dot Com?
Speaker 4 (03:35):
I have, but share it to the people. Okay, But
let's set the mood, shall we shall we? Yes, there
we go. Okay, So this is the newest updated MVP
leaders the top ten according to NBA dot Com. Number ten,
Anthony Edwards, you call that.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
I'm all right with that.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Number nine. This one's a bit of a surprise.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
Donovan Mitchell, huh, okay.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
I think it's more like just because of the carryover
for like what the team is without him more than else.
Number eight probably along the same lines. Kawhi Leonard, Okay,
same thing. Clippers are nothing without him.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
The next one.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
I appreciate this because he's an underrated player on a
lower level, kind of like rebuilding team Jalen Johnson of
the Hawks.
Speaker 1 (04:14):
Okay, good player.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Okay, he's probably on his come up.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
No. Number six, and this is obviously like and recently
he was more top three.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Now the injuries kind of pushed him back.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
Kay cunning him, Yeah, Cuttinghams dropped.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
Yeah, and I think the injury's probably gona kno him
out of the race, which too bad because I.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
Think he's already out.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Yeah, but he was. He had a really good season.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
Number five a guy you and I both like a lot,
respect a lot for what he's done this year. Very surprised.
Number five is Jaylen Brown Boston Celtics.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
Yeah, he's okay, He's done a lot for Boston, especially
with Tatum being out as long as he was.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
Yeah, And I think maybe he knocked back because Jason
Tatum came back and they've done well with him as well,
So maybe that's kind of hurt his case a little bit.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Number four Luka doncic La Lakers.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
Wow did he drop a little Yeah, yeah he did
because he was number three for a minute. Back at
number three is the joker himself, Nico let you you get.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
The Denver Nuggets. Does he really care? Probably not.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
He has he has, he has MVPs jet and he's
about as lockdown a Hall of Famer as there is
in the NBA right now. That's not Lebron, number two,
Shay Gildess, Alexander the Oklahoma.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
City Thunder, and your No. Number one MVP candidate odds.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
According to NBA dot Com, Victor Wiman Yama of the
San Antonio.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
Spurs, imagine that. Imagine that he comes out on Monday.
I think he was like number three at that point
on Monday.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
There was a point where he was number three, but
him and I think him and Luca were actually that
kind of really close.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
And then yeah, the Lakers made that run and then
of course they lost, and.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
Then Shaye, I think one time it was like a
minus four fifty and then the last like almost forty
eight hours, Wimby jumped to number one because not only
has the national narrative changed around Wimby, but a lot
of former NBA players, which we'll get to next segment,
by the way, have been talking about why Wemby really
is the true MVP. It's because even though he's not
the best score, we can objectively say he's not the
best score, but he's but like he's the only best
(06:02):
two way player in the league. There is no player
on their team that has more value on both ends
of the court.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
I think Wimby's more like a Gordon Ramsey of the NBA.
Does that make sense? Good all around? Oh, he can
bring the dish to the table and he can also
cook the dish, wake the dish. And what he does
is he makes his team stronger, from the Viscelles to
the Keldon Johnson's. Because look, man, the Spurs are gonna
(06:28):
go after some hardware in the awards this season. And
it's not just MVP, it's obviously Defensive Player of the Year,
which they've already should ship that trophy here.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
It's pretty much locked out at this point.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
Yeah, you know, wasn't a great day yesterday for Wimby,
you know, but you can't be full on for eighty
two games, you know. But at the same time, you
didn't really need him yesterday against Milwaukee. Milwaukee literally looked
like a walking er yesterday, but they handled business. But
you're also looking at I would say, Coach of the Year.
(06:59):
I don't know what the odds are there, Mitch Johnson
quick if you want. Yeah, Mitch Johnson should say something,
because it takes a lot for a coach to to
let Winby go to the podium and state his case.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Let's see, because.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
I mean, remember our last MVP was Tim Duncan back
in two thousand and three, and there was no case.
It was it was quiet, it was fundamental. And I'm
not saying that what Wimby's doing is wrong. It's absolutely
what the NBA is now. You have to put yourself
out there, you know. And of course we'll get into
it on the players that actually support him, which is
(07:35):
kind of shocking to me.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Okay, so this is the most recent one that I saw.
This is this is Bett MGM.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
Let's see.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
So right now, miss Johnson is still third at a
plus sixteen hundred. Number two is Joe Mizzoula at plus
one fifty five and still with the lead.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
And I'm fine with this, honestly. JB.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
Bickerstaff at the Pistons as a minus one ninety. So
Mitch john I mean, here's the thing. I think if
the Spurs went out and they overcome the Okac thunder
at number one, that could close the gap. But I
feel it feels like right now it's a lot to
overcome Joe Mizoula because they're giving him the benefit of
the doubt of coaching without Jason Tatum as opposed to JIMN.
Brown the MVP benefit of the doubt without Jason tamm
in that way. And I'm actually final with bicker stat
(08:11):
being number one. I think he's done a great job coaching.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
I'm not I'll be honest with you. I think this
is Mitch Johnson's Cup because you talk about you know Boston, right, yeah, cool,
They've been consistent enough to be in the playoffs. Nobody
counted them in, right, since you know, when Tatum went
down last year, They're like, oh, Boston's going to be rebuilding,
(08:35):
They're blowing out the rosters, they're doing this, blah blah
blah blah blah. But they stayed consistent. Does that go
to coaching, Absolutely? But I mean he's been doing that, right.
Nobody knew who Mitch Johnson was last year. Spurs fans
already wanted to get rid of him.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
He was the pop he was the pop disciple.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
Right, and everybody's like, man, I remember, there's some people
that are probably hiding in caves now about you know,
their their opinions on Mitch Johnson. But we saw Mitch
Johnson honor Pop by coaching Pop's style that that season.
Now he turns it. This is his team. El Hefe
gives him the keys, and el Hefe is now, you know, smiling,
(09:15):
because this team has fifty six wins on the verge
of probably getting sixty, which I think they are going
to get sixty wins at this rate probably. I mean,
this is it is a tough week for them this week.
I mean, they have Chicago tomorrow, You've got to handle
business at home, and then you fly out west and
you've got three you got three West Coast games, but
you've got the Warriors, then you've got the Clippers, and
then next Saturday afternoon another Amazon Prime afternoon game in Denver.
(09:40):
I'll tell you what, and you get to see Denver
in one week.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
I'm surried.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
I'll be surprised that the Warriors play Steph anymore this year,
especially at the way right they're going, They're done. I
don't know, I Kawhi is going to plan that game.
I'm not really as as as a worried about those
games much as you are.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
I'm more more about the homestand the homestand's going to
be tough. I think the homestands be tougher than the road.
Speaker 1 (10:01):
Yeah, you've I mean, you got Philly in Portland, right,
and then Dallas because.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
Philly's gonna be fighting to avoid the play in. Yeah,
Philly's gonna be fighting.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
But the last time we face Philly, now they have
Paul George back. That's the difference here. No, it is
a huge difference for Philly, I guess because the way
that we handled them up in Philly that was an
embarrassment and Philly's gonna remember that. The players are gonna
remember that. But at the same time, you know, you've
got Portland, who, give or take, they've kind of been quiet.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
Portland's locked into the play in Dallas.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
Is pretty much done. They got to go get draft picks.
And then that Sunday, April twelfth game at home that
that's gonna be a dog fight. Yeah, because Denver's fighting
for seeding at this point.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
Because they're right behind the Lakers. They want that third seed.
They would rather play the Rockets in this nugget.
Speaker 1 (10:47):
And after yesterday's win for the Spurs, the worst they
can do is the two seeds. Yes, think about that.
So you've got the Lakers who actually have to face
the thunder, I believe, and then you have the Nuggets
who are fighting to get back into that third spot.
As much as we look at the Joker and we say, man,
this guy's wayiamc a ball, it doesn't look like he cares.
(11:08):
They care. You want to get some sort of home atmosphere.
I mean, the Spurs get that right for the first round,
which helps his team tremendously that in the first round,
possibly second round, we've got home court advantage.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
Right, So it looks like okay See actually plays the
Knicks tonight, so's and the Lakers play the Wizards. But again,
the Lakers have no bearing on the Spurs standings that
the Spurs they do as far as they tried, they tried.
Speaker 1 (11:35):
Boy did the Lakers try. They made a run? Are
they Are they a threat? You think?
Speaker 3 (11:39):
I think what they've done is they've done a good
job of masking their defensive inefficiencies because I think they've
the way they play the zone, they forced to shoot
a lot of outside shots. So unless you're consistently good
outside shooting team, right, you won't be able to do much.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
You won't be able to do much against them.
Speaker 1 (11:53):
Right, But to me, it's like, you saw the Lakers
do this run and you're like, Oh, as a Spurs fan,
you're like, oh, they're getting hot. Right. The Lakers have
now turned to team Luca and Lebron kind of and
give Lebron credit, in my opinion, he's kind of stepped back, right,
He's become that guy. It's not his team anymore. We
(12:14):
all know it's Luca's team out there in LA. But
it wasn't enough because I mean, when you look at
the Spurs since February, are you kidding me? Are you
kidding me? That's twenty four and two? Are you kidding me?
It doesn't matter. Yes, they're on an eight game winning
streak right now. But to see what they're doing, it's
incredible to me because last season I would say this
(12:35):
all the time. To tie, I would say, man, it
was that fourth quarter, right, it was that third and
fourth quarter that the Spurs let it slip away. There
were some wins last year, Shane that could have gotten
them in to that play in tournament now, obviously if
Winby stayed healthy that last season, but there were some
games that they couldn't do it this season has been
a different chapter for them. This season has been what
(12:59):
they can do it right, A team gets close and
they press the gas pedal, they start making shots. Yep.
And this is my case and we'll get into it
in the next segment. Why Wimby is the MVP because
with Winby on the floor, wow, right, even with him
off the floor, he has made the Spurs a superstar
(13:20):
contender and one of the contenders. And when I look
at the West, Shane, it's gonna be the Thunder or
the Spurs in my opinion, probably.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
Because I don't think the West is as deep as
it used to be.
Speaker 1 (13:31):
Yeah, if we go one two right in the West, well,
the Western Conference finals is going to have to go
through okayc and the Spurs have already proven they can
win up there. Yes, Wemby likes them.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
Yeah, I got something for you on the next one though, Okay,
because one of them, one of my sounds is MVP related.
I got a couple others that what we're doing next, right,
we are doing next? And I'm gonna tell right now
it is. Uh, it's let's put it this way. It's
it's all bleeped out, but let's we'll call it TV
mature put it that way.
Speaker 1 (14:01):
TV mature. Are you talking with Draymond Green?
Speaker 2 (14:04):
H No, that would have been taken to No, I don't.
Speaker 1 (14:08):
I don't want to put you ever try to read
that stuff on air when you're trying to clean it up.
I'm like, oh my goodness.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
I got something. I got something a little better than
that though.
Speaker 1 (14:16):
Nice. And you know what else we're gonna do today
for the people. We're gonna open up the phone line. Yes,
