Speaker 1 (00:00):
Everybody leaves and heads east out to West Palm Beach
and for that much more. We catch up with MLB
dot Com Astros dot COM's Brian McTaggart here on the
morning Drive tags appreciate it, buddy, I mean just yesterday,
you know, just go ahead, broadview. Just what stood out
to you the most during Emai's first introduction to the
(00:22):
Houston media and the Astros fans.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Yeah, good one.
Speaker 3 (00:26):
It just seemed like he had a uh he seemed
like he had a great personality. Just seemed like he
was a very fun guy who was very excited to
be here in Houston. I mean, he's already been to
a Texans and Rockets game, so he's a hit in
the ground running. But uh uh, Yeah, it just seemed
like he's he's gonna be a fun guy he gets
to know here over the next year. I don't know
if he'll be here more than a year, but you know,
(00:48):
it should should be fun just to see him get
acclimated to the US and see him settle into his
new surroundings.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (00:54):
I had somebody ask me that Brian, oh, is he
is he gonna be a multi year deal? And I
was like, well, if he stinks, yes, but he's really good.
He's probably opting out and again we'll see maybe they
they do sign him long term.
Speaker 5 (01:07):
We'll find out on that.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
But I mean, look, in a perfect world, you want
him to come in and be really awesome for the
Astros this year.
Speaker 5 (01:13):
That's the whole point.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
And data Brown's saying that he feels good about this rotation.
I know it's early and they you know, we're a
month and a half away from spurg training games starting.
But I mean, is it is it easy to just
assume he's going to be number two or number three
slotted in this rotation?
Speaker 2 (01:31):
Yeah? I think so.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
I mean, I I don't see any reason why he
wouldn't be, uh, you know, at the top of the rotation.
I mean, you know, Hunter Brown's your clear cut as
now with Fromber being gone. So but I mean more
than that, it's just about you know, you know, adding
adding a guy who you know should fill up some inittings,
you know, help replace the void left by Farnber Valdez.
(01:52):
I mean, they've had a four starting pitchers this offseason,
most notably Burrows and Ryan Weiss, you know from Korea,
you know, who knows what are going to get there,
but they've hadded some quality depth along with the guys
they have coming back, Harry Getty, JAVIERA. McCullers, and then
you know, even going down the line a little bit
with guys like uh.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
You know, Colton Gordon and guys like that.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
So they needed to go out and make it a
little bit of a splash in the rotation.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
They did that.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
You're right, if he pitches really well, he's going to
opt out try to get more money. But if he
does that, that many he's pitched well for the Astros
and he probably helped them win and get back to
the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (02:28):
That voice is the one of Brian McTaggart MLB dot com,
Astros dot com hopping on with us for a few
minutes here on the Morning Drive with Dan and Cole.
Speaker 5 (02:36):
Chris Gordy in for Cole.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
You know, Jim Crane's side of yesterday to being asked
about the you know, just the new efforts that they're
making right there in the Pacific rim of having Scout
in Tokyo Soul and also Taiwan as well. I mean,
is this kind of one of those things tags where
we could see every single offseason, Hey, here's this guy
from Korea.
Speaker 5 (02:56):
Hey, here's this guy from Japan.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
I think so, I mean, I think I think Crane
just got fed up.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
With the Dodgers.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
Sort of having this little monopoly, if you want to
call it that, getting players from Japan. I mean, you know,
a Tani was at the Angels. First, they went to
the Dodgers. But I mean he gets there and they
went to World Series titles and Yamamotos the MVP of
the World Series. And if you're not an active player
in Japan and trying to compete with these teams, and
(03:26):
you're probably not going to compete with this team. So
he went over there last summer to close the deal
with Dyking as far as Dyking, as far as naming
rights goes. And when he was over there, poked around
the baseball market. Saw you know how important the baseball
market is, and you know, he's got offices all over
the world, so he brought some He hired some scouts
that are working out of his offices in those three
(03:46):
places you just mentioned to try to to try to
get the astros in the door with these guys, get
to know them, scout them, and then report back here.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
But I still don't think.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
I mean, if they have a player coming that's going
to get a from Japan, it's going to get aw
three hundred million dollar contract. They're still not going to
do that, but a guy like Imi, Yeah, I mean
they're gonna try to be players and guys with Korea
as well. I mean, I think they just realized they
have to do that compete. The Dodgers have sort of
set the blueprint here and have done it pretty well.
Speaker 4 (04:17):
Yeah. I remember hearing the you know with with with
the Dodgers and their their TV rights and all that
over there, that they've made a ton of money is money,
and we we know what happened with Yao here with
the Rockets. Is that kind of the expectation that they
should make a lot of money on the back end
here with people wanting to see I pitch overseas.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Yeah, I don't know how big a name he is
over there. I mean know Tani's is sort of a
class by himself and sort of like Yao Ming was.
I mean, they are generational superstars. So I don't know
if he may is going to be that that bankable,
but certainly it's going to help get.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Them in that market.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
A little bit more and that the partnership with Dyken
probably helps that as well. So Crane just said they
sort of had had ignored that a and now they're
they're going to be full tilt in Japan and try
to become players over there.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
So it's gonna be very in to watch.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
But I yeah, I think every year now we see
guys posted from the MPB, we're gonna have to wonder,
you know, the astro is going to be in on
this guy, and we could see it not only with
pitchers but with some hitters as well in the future.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
Again, Brian mctagger join us here on the Morning Drive
and tags, let's talk about the rest of the roster.
You heard Dana Brown say yesterday they feel good about
starting rotation. Backup catcher still a you know, on the
wish list. But when it comes to how are you
going to deploy Estoc Perettis and Christian Walker? Did you
not kind of get the sense yesterday that Dana Brown
(05:40):
might be coming off of where they were emphatic at
the meetings earlier this offseason, No neither of those guys
are being moved.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
Yeah, I did. I got the same feeling.
Speaker 3 (05:50):
I think he said that anything's on the table or
something towards those lines. Yesterday it did, you know, it
wasn't as strong as what it was that the you
know last year, like when he said that, Yeah, I mean,
we're not going to trade those guys. They have to
remain open minded. I mean, they still need to get
a backup catcher.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
I mean, they can praise is.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
Our salads are all they want, and he's doing a
pretty good job in winter ball right now, but swinging
a pretty good bat. But they you know, they're gonna
lose a pretty important piece in Caroteni, so that that
just can't be something they sweep under the rug. They
have to go out and get another catcher behind yond
Or and how do they do that?
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Do they do that in my trade?
Speaker 3 (06:27):
And can maybe they can get a reliever via trade
as well, and it would certainly help clear up what
still appears to be sort.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
Of a log jam on the infield.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
So yeah, it wouldn't surprise me if another trade is coming,
But it certainly seems like they're done pitching wise. They
just have to address the backup catcher. And I'm still
surprised they haven't traded Jake Myers yet. I thought that
was pretty much gonna be a foregone conclusion.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
They still might.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
We'll see how that shakes out as they go along.
They did trade Jake Melton, so maybe that clears up
some playing time now. So the heavy lifting is almost done,
but they still have a few things to do before
they go to Florida in five weeks.
Speaker 4 (07:02):
I just look at it, Brian, over the course of
a one sixty two season. I mean, it's it's still
as amazing how the twenty two season they were able
to get through with what they basically Michael Brandley was
the only significant injury that all that year. I mean,
injuries are gonna happen, and man, they have been taxed
with injuries the last couple of years, and everybody wants
to make such a big deal about that log jam
on the infield. But also part of me feels like,
(07:23):
maybe it's not such a bad thing if you keep
Walker with Paris and Korean and payn in Altuve, because
odds are one of these guys is gonna miss time
this year due to injury.
Speaker 5 (07:32):
It's just gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
Yep, very true. I mean, it's not a bad problem
to have. Kara is a guy who's been injured quite
a bit throughout his career. I mean, Predisvas half the
season last year. Walker's been pretty durable, but you know,
two Day's not getting any younger. Payyat took a ball
off the risk miss four or five weeks last year.
Speaker 2 (07:52):
You're right, there are gonna be injuries and you need
that depth.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
I guess the question is when they're all when they're
all healthy and playing every day, you know, you keep
them all, you know, on the field or getting regular
at bats.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
You know you do have the d hs.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
But the problem is it seems like you'ord On Alvarez
is going to be a pretty much a full time
DH at this point. But I mean, these are pretty
good problems to have if you're the Astros where you
have too many guys. I mean, if they're healthy, this
this lineup one through six, it still has a chance
to be really, really good. So and I think the
signing of em sort of clears up some cloudiness and
the rotation to where now you're thinking, like, Okay, this
(08:25):
this team's kind of interesting. So I think going into
the season, they they're probably going to be again right
there with the Mariners. Is uh, the favorites to contend for.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
The Aos Tags final one at least from me here
and again. Brian mctagger joined us here on the Morning Drive.
How the twitter fingers are are they ready to go
for tonight? Because I know that you and Texas Tech
Red Raider fans really like to uh pick at each
other on Twitter.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
Ah. I love Texas Tech fans. They're great.
Speaker 3 (08:55):
I uh, I know, I know if some of them
will be coming to our our gym tonight to watch
the big game against Houston, so I plan to welcome
them with open arms.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
And it should be a great game.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
So no, I mean this is a pretty I mean,
it's just a pretty good test for both these teams.
I mean, Houston probably the biggest game they played so
far this year as far as a top fifteen team,
and obviously Tech playing you know, the top seventeen, top
seven right teams, So yeah, it should be a.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
Lot of fun.
Speaker 5 (09:21):
Well, and by the way, to you and Gordy, you're good, right.
Speaker 1 (09:24):
I mean I know that you two kind of had
a little bit of a thing over the Texas Bowl.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
I just want to make sure I said it was
a good win for you of a So we're just
having some fun.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
Yeah, it was a good win. I can't help.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
But if LSU is in turnoil and doesn't care, I mean, hey,
we'll We'll.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
Play LSU anytime anywhere. I love it.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
Hey.
Speaker 4 (09:42):
Well, one more real quick for you, Brian, because I
had a buddy texted me last night. The vibe I
get is it feels like, does it feel like Fromber
is going to go into spring training without a team?
Like I feel like so many of these big clients
are like more and more, especially the pitchers, were they're
getting the spring training and having a weight because those
big monster deals just aren't coming.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
Yeah, it's very possible, you know. And how how's the
WBC going to play into that as well? I mean
the Astros sort of wouldn't let him play three years ago,
so uh is he going to try to play? And
is you know, is he gonna come out of there
and then sign with somebody? So that's got to be
factored in as well. But uh, yeah, there's still a
bunch of big names still on the board. Of course,
(10:25):
the three of the biggest ones are former Astros Bregmant,
Tucker and Fromber and they're not coming back here.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
So that's you know.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
Problems for other people, but yeah, I mean Bregnant didn't
sign last year until spring training had started, so uh,
it's gonna be very interesting to see as we move forward,
might get some blockbuster deals while we're already in Florida.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
Well, Tags, now you need to do is make sure
that Tatsu and my is in the building tonight over
at for Tita Center's two.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
And oh yeah, I mentioned that on on Twitter yesterday.
I said, let's get him court side. He's obviously got
if he threw up the h Man, we can get
him throw up the cougar handpot and I can get
that win over Texas Tech. He certainly is a good
luck charm.
Speaker 5 (11:03):
So far there you go.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
Yeah, you know, here's the wishing for sure, as you'll
get that game over on KPRC nine fifty tonight.
Speaker 5 (11:09):
Tags, you're the best man.
Speaker 1 (11:10):
We'll catch up with you again here very soon, and
spring training to be here before we know it.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
Yep, five weeks. So all right, guys, we'll talk
