Speaker 1 (00:02):
This is the morning drive with Dad and Cole.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
There was nobody happier than you at about I don't
know what twoin fifty eight, yesterday, whatever time it was,
whenever that game ended, three fifteen.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
I don't even remember.
Speaker 4 (00:21):
Secret I'd say I was happy at two fifty four
when Josh Allen Waltz's way into the end zone.
Speaker 3 (00:25):
Everyone realized at that point.
Speaker 4 (00:26):
Come Monday morning, you get call to the show seven
pet three two one two five seven ninety. But if
you ever have a negative thing to say about my
sports takes just a reminder. I was right. Your frauds,
your losers. You got bamboozled, you got hoodwinked, he got
slapped in the face, and you got told straight up.
(00:49):
How pathetic of a franchise that soul of city known
as Duval County came on in to let it be
known that they were always going to up short. I
told you this for weeks. I told you this, for months.
I told you, I told you, I told you, and.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
For the next four hours. Damn Matthews, I am.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
Going to be gloating as all promise impossible, because I
warned you all this.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
Was going to happen. But who want to go ahead
and doubt me. Oh, the Jaguars. We gotta get flowers
to Trevor Lawrence. We gotta get flowers to lay.
Speaker 4 (01:23):
Up going for what he's been able to do doing
in the postseason when your backs are against the wall.
What happened overthrown ball tipped into the hands of cold Bishop.
A Buffalo Bills team that sucks is moving on because
you have an incompetent quarterback.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Well, I mean, I'm guessing that you probably went good morning,
good morning, good morning. You're fired up.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
I like it. I like it.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
That's the energy we need on this Monday, especially to
a game day Monday, because the Texans of course getting
ready for the Steelers tonight for a right to move
on to go to New England to take on the Patriots.
So I'm guessing that you would not be in the
postgame press conference trying to cheer up Liam Cohen then,
would you.
Speaker 4 (02:04):
No, I would actually be going in did the opposite direction,
asking what the hell were you even thinking starting Trevor
Lawrence in that game.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
I mean, come on, it's not like he you know,
has been just awful this game.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
Yeah, sure, just don't throw an interception to go ahead
and lose the football game, or don't throw an interception
early on in the game at least a scoring drive.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
I mean, that's just me I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
I just I feel like yesterday we saw a lot
of examples of maybe we're too hard on CJ.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
Stroud.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Maybe people just in general are too hard on c J.
Stroud because for all of the hype that Trevor Lawrence
had this year, and he lays an egg, and then
for the one of all which I saw a lot
of people around here starting to jump on this last night,
and even some nationally too, of maybe it's time to
start having the conversation about Justin Herbert.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Yeah, exactly, I mean exactly that I.
Speaker 4 (02:55):
Can give him a little bit of a I can
give him a slight pass for one reason, the offensive
line still sucks. That's the only reason I can go
ahead and give him a slight let's wait until next
year kind of feel.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
But no, he was terrible last night.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
He was horr won third on execution, he was getting
bullied behind the line of scrimmage, he was making bad
throw out to bad throw, He had a bad fumble
at one point.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
I mean, like we're going and we're blaming CJ.
Speaker 4 (03:17):
Stroud for everything and saying that you know, there's incompetence
with him running the offense. But at the same time,
what did you walk away with last night feeling comfortable
if you were a Los Angeles Chargers fan that you're
gonna win a Super Bowl with the guy that you
thought was a better pick than Tua. And honestly, it's
like barely it's a slight upgrade over him.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
I mean, like I've been saying for at least the
last year.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
At this point, we can have the conversation about who
is number five in the quarterback room, and then people
would be like, oh, it's Justin Herbert.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
No no, no, no, no, no, no, no no.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
It used to be Justin Herbert, But now there's like
nine or ten names that all could fit in that
criteria for the number five best quarterback in the NFL.
And Herbert's losing stock, Well, maybe CJ. Stroud gains it
a little bit this week.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
Well, and it's opportunity for him because let's just throw
out the stat line nineteen of thirty one, one hundred
and fifty nine yards and it all in total came
out to be about one hundred and twenty yards because
he was sacked six times and he lost thirty nine
yards on said sacks.
Speaker 4 (04:17):
Yeah, because the offensive line sucks.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
It's terrible. They're playing guards at tackles spots.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Well, I mean, look, and here's the thing too, is
I understand that step one is a massive step for
the Texans tonight because you got to go to Pittsburgh
and be able to win that game. But if they
do and they get New England next weekend, I mean,
it's not like Drake may is that well protected.
Speaker 4 (04:37):
Are you looking at all at any point during the
Los Ange's game and saying that guy intimidates me?
Speaker 3 (04:42):
No? May, No, not Necessarily.
Speaker 4 (04:44):
The offensive line was fined to a certain extent, the
rushing attack was find to a certain extent.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
Los Angeles defense has.
Speaker 4 (04:50):
Been top five and scoring top five, and run defense,
they've been really good in a lot of categories. They
eventually just unfortunately had the damn break on opening for
them and that led to a Hunter Henry time touchdown
and really the only difference in the game. But it
was a field goal snoozefest for a majority of the
after I mean of the evening, Like there was a
point to where it was like, guys, I gotta be
up in like five hours. Can one of you just
(05:11):
score a touchdown so I can go to bed and
feel comfortable knowing that way?
Speaker 2 (05:13):
And Hunter Henry did that, so it worked out in
that regard. But I mean, overall this weekend, the wild
Cards getting the better of the divisional winners, because I
mean we talked about Buffalo and we know about them
moving on and in New England of course being one
of the two home teams that won, which by the way, too,
(05:34):
I mean I was all over this on Saturday night.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
How the hell does Green Bay lose?
Speaker 5 (05:38):
Deck?
Speaker 4 (05:38):
You get this Green Bay because it's batt Leafleur because
of its short and love in the fourth quarter. It's
bad play calling. I mean, look at what they did
in the first half and then see the game plan
in the second. They were ending and running down clock.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
It was gift after gift given to you going forward
on fourth down, Like I think it was like his own.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
Like thirty or thirty. It was a fourth and thirteen.
So I mean, it's just like so many of them.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
And that's just as I'm watching the game, I'm like, Okay,
surely there's no way that Green Bay loses this game.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
Surely there's no way.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
And then of course you get the field goal to
put it to twenty one to nine touchdown and in
another touchdown, and you're just like, good lord, I mean,
think about this, How how do you allow that to happen?
Speaker 4 (06:19):
Think about this for a second though, Like you're talking
about Brandon McManus and how we're giving a lot of
flack to CJ Stroud all the time. How about just
be thankful that you have Kyami Fairbairn because if they
don't make that field If they make that field goal,
game's over. I mean the game is over and Green
May's moving on. And if they make the point after attempt,
it's a three point game to where you don't have
to go for the touchdown so you can set up
(06:41):
for a field goal at that point. He missed two
field goals and it miss a paighteen. That's seven points
on the table right there. Green Bay had it won
until they didn't. And Caleb Williams looked like dog water
in the first half, and the offensive personnel for Chicago
was miserable at best, and the defense once again showed
you that it's incompetent it more so just shows you. Hey,
(07:03):
Matt Lafleur, you know how you're supposed to get a
contract extension. How about we hold off on that a
little bit longer because of right now we're a little
pissed off that we blew a three possession lead with
twenty minutes left on the clock.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
Well, and I mean in terms of the impressive teams
this weekend, I mean, you got to give you credit
to San Francisco for going to Philly and putting together
the performance they did. I mean, if Texans fans are
upset with Nick Kyley in this offense, imagine what Eagle
fans are with that Eagles offense. And oh, by the way,
too for aj Brown for all of his frustrations.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
I mean the.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
Moment that you have in order to be able to
keep your season alive. Drop skis oh, I mean, Kevin.
Speaker 4 (07:41):
My favorite thing to do this morning when I was
waking up and get ready for work was going on
to TikTok and watching the crash out of Philadelphia Eagles
fans thinking that they had just won the number one
overall pick because of how pathetic they are as a franchise,
when really they're coming off of a Super Bowl and
their offense coordinator, Kevin Batillo is just so competent that
they now have to feel like the world has come
(08:03):
to an end.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
Well, I mean, is this another offseason where changes are
made to coordinators because we've already seen that happen once
and then I mean even with the Super Bowl last year,
I mean, doesn't it kind of get to a point
where you then you look at Nick Sirianni and you're like, hey,
maybe you're kind of the problem because I mean, that
is his side of the ball.
Speaker 4 (08:20):
Yeah, but he's bought itself some equity because he won
a Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Sure, but and I'm not saying he's going anywhere. But
the point is that, I mean, you know, this is
now twice that this has happened with Philadelphia where they
have faltered down the stretch. And I mean in the
score is one of those things that it wasn't even
indicative of the game. San Francisco dominated.
Speaker 4 (08:41):
That game, San Francisco dominated, but they created opportunities for
Philadelphia to work their way back. In two big interceptions
by brock perty On Queen Yon Mitchell both let score
and drives for Philadelphia. I mean, like this probably should
have been a ten point win in favor of San Francisco,
and it's impressive and I.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
Gotta eat more crow, And.
Speaker 4 (08:57):
Like, I want to implement a new segment sometimes on
the show that says, my bad bro, because of I
want to apologize to Kyle Shanahan because I called him
the most overrated coach in the NFL going into the season.
So my bad bro, because look at who your linebacking
corps is. It's former Texans linebacker Garrett Wallow who has
a six round pick and Eric Kendricks who came on
in less than a month ago, and they're the ones
(09:20):
saving the game. Not to mention you lose George Kittle
in the second quarter to a torn achilles and you
don't miss a beat. Juwan Jennings, former quarterback in high school,
those touchdown pass.
Speaker 3 (09:31):
To Christian McCaffrey.
Speaker 4 (09:32):
Like, it was very, very entertaining watching the overall implosion
of Philadelphia finding a way to act like that they
run football, that they are the most dominant program, that
we have the best fans in the sport, when really
you have some of the biggest losers I've ever met
my entire life. Running the show out in Philly but
watching them crumble in their own stadium, and again the
(09:54):
key players that continue to bitch and mope and cry
and holler about not getting the attention ball your way,
you drop an easy touchdown Pat, I mean, like, what
are we doing here?
Speaker 2 (10:03):
Well, it's not only that, but I mean, you know,
just they're showing the highlights on NFL network as so
we have it on here in the studio, and I
mean a couple of drops, one of them where aj
Brown gets a little bit of alligator arms on a deep.
Speaker 3 (10:17):
Throw, so it wasn't good.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
And I mean and then you've got Nick Sirianni and
him going chest to chest at each other. Big Dom
has to step in and be able to kind of
intervene in the situation. I mean, it's just like, boy,
there's gonna be some changes up there, But we got
a game to worry about down here, and it is.
Speaker 3 (10:37):
So do we have a game to worry about? Well,
I mean, you've got to be able to win.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
I mean, look, it's it's not like the Texans haven't
had a history of you know, the expectations are there
for him and they're ready to be able to meet
set expectations.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
And it doesn't go their way.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
What if I told you that there is one proven
data point that will show that the Texans are going
to tonight and they're going to handle business, and then
they will be traveling to Foxborough next Sunday to take
on the New England Patriots.
Speaker 2 (11:06):
We'll share that with you coming up right here as
we're just getting going on a Monday. If you want
to get in seOne three two on two, five seven
ninety A. Get it's Sebone three two on two, five
seven ninety. It's the Morning Drive with Dan and Cole.
Right here, Sports Talks seven ninety Dan Matthews, Cole Thompson.
This is the Morning Drive with Dan and Cole. Never
(11:30):
been a better time to come home for five straight games.
Sebone three two on two, five seven ninety Jason get
to you in a second. But the data point Cole Thompson,
that you tease the audience with now is the time
to share.
Speaker 4 (11:42):
Texans are gonna win tonight. They're gonna win twenty three
to ten tonight. They're going to guarantee themselves a spot
in the divisional round for the third show. Yarnder Demiko Ryans,
and it's because history in the twenty twenty five playoffs
has just told us what's gonna happen. So who won
the first wild card round? The Los Angeles Rams over
the Carolina Anthers. What seed were the Rams?
Speaker 3 (12:02):
They were the five? Five seed? What seed was the
Chicago Bears? They were the two? They were the two seed?
Speaker 4 (12:10):
What seed was the Buffalo Bills?
Speaker 3 (12:13):
Buffalo was six?
Speaker 4 (12:14):
They were the sixth seed? What seed was the San Francisco.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
Forty nine ers?
Speaker 3 (12:17):
They were the sixth?
Speaker 4 (12:18):
They were the sixth seed? And what seed was the
New England Patriots?
Speaker 3 (12:22):
New England is number two?
Speaker 4 (12:23):
So you're telling me that so far the five seed,
both two seeds, and both six seeds have moved on.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
Texans are a five seed.
Speaker 4 (12:31):
The Texans are playing against a team that had to
sneak its way into the playoffs on the very last
game of the regular season, much like the Los Angeles Rams,
and much like the Los Angeles Rams, everybody has been
talking about the Texans in the AFC as the one
opponent they do not want to see get hot in
the playoffs because of a number one defense, because of
a quarterback that has been in this situation before, and
(12:54):
an offense that is slowly starting to find weapons outside
of Nico Collins to break on free. The exact same
mantra that we talk about with the Rams is the
way we talk about the Texans and the Rams were
a five seed that went into the went into the
belly of the beast and beat a four seed. Every
team is going to be the exact same on either
side of the bracket.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
The comparison that can be made with Los Angeles is,
I think the same thing here in this game is
that even though you're away, you are the better team.
I mean, And there was no time in that game
on Saturday that I'm watching thinking Carolina as as a
chance to win this game. It was pretty much all right,
if LA gives them this game, that's how they win it.
And then later on that night my logic was kind
(13:35):
of used against me because again, you know, I'm thinking,
there's no way that the Packers find a way to
lose this game. There's zero chance, because you also had
the Bears doing their best to give them the game.
They gave their game with their fit, with their failed
fourth down conversions, and it's just like dude, Benny, look,
nobody goes broke taking a profit man punt.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
The football. It's fine, it's okay.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
I understand your defense isn't the greatest, but they are
really good at getting turnovers, and you play a lot
better at Soldier Field, so maybe a little bit of
trust on that side of the ball.
Speaker 3 (14:09):
But it turned out to not really matter when it
was all said and done. But they gave them the
opportunity to score.
Speaker 4 (14:13):
It was the incompetence of Green Bay that we've seen
throughout the entire season this year kind of come back
to riddle its ugly head and make it clear that yes,
we were going to lose this football game. And the
same thing happened for Jacksonville, and the same thing happened
for Carolina, and the same thing happened for Los Angeles.
Teams that showed you the weaknesses or had the faulty
errors of their overall roster came.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
Back to haunt them. I mean, no matter how you want.
Speaker 4 (14:37):
To phrase it, the better team in every single matchup
I think won this weekend.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
And you know they're showing the highlights two of the
Jacksonville Buffalo game yesterday and the Trevor Lawrence failed fourth
down conversion where he had his knee come down at
just about a half yard short of the first down.
My good buddy, the Philly Godfather, a gambling guy, and
he just threw it out there, and I agree with him.
(15:02):
Coaches hate points. I mean, it's seriously right there, you're
up by four. I understand you would like to be
able to be up by two scores at that point,
but I mean, again, nobody goes broke taking a profit.
You got a guy that can make it from about
seventy yards. Yeah, but Kim Liddall also missed one from
like fifty five well after the referees completely botched it.
(15:22):
I mean that's the other part of it, too, is
they one hundred percent acquiesced to the crowd right there.
They one hundred percent did anybody with a pair of eyes. Hell,
if you have one set of eye with your two
that you're given in life, you could have seen that's
triple zeros.
Speaker 3 (15:40):
You're going to the half. They didn't. They did not.
Speaker 2 (15:42):
They did not snap the football in time. And I
mean still the NFL officiating crew that's working that decides, well,
we don't want to make the home you know, crowd
too upset, so we'll go ahead and say there's one
second left.
Speaker 3 (15:54):
It was complete bs complete.
Speaker 4 (15:56):
Well, it didn't matter because if he missed the field
goal anyways, so problem solved it that point.
Speaker 2 (16:00):
It worked out incredibly well. But I mean, if you're
Sean McDermott and you are the Buffalo Bills, you're beside
yourself with that because you're like, you almost just jeopardized
our season because of such awful officiating in that moment.
Speaker 4 (16:14):
Sure, but you have number seventeen on your side who's
been in the situation before and has tried to finally
end the narrative of I can't win on the road,
because like that was the big thing about going into
this playoff game is that Josh Allen has never won
a road playoff matchup since being named the starting quarterback
out in Buffalo. Every single time that they've played, they've
had to play at High Mark and they've had to
win that game. So for him to be able to
(16:34):
go into Duval to take down Trevor Lawrence to finally
make me feel confident and make sure that I was
right on everything that I ever said about Trevor Lawrence,
I appreciate it. So it's not the big of a
deal in my opinion, because of I know that you
have seventeen and they have Trevor Lawrence on the other
side that's got to build him out of trouble.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
And then you also have the push for the first
down on the fourth and inches there late in the game,
and you have one of Buffalo's offensive linemen legit pick
up Josh Allen.
Speaker 3 (17:01):
Is there a rule against it? I'm not sure that
there is.
Speaker 4 (17:04):
I don't believe that there was a point to where
they said, oh, it's a touchdown, because if they didn't see,
if if part of his body hit the bottom of
the turf, it's like, yeah, remember the Michael Dyer run
when it was against Oregon and he thought his knee
was down and it wasn't. Instead of a game winning
field goal. If your buy doesn't touch who cares? Pick
him up, throw them over your shoulder, literally craile him
to sleeve.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
He's gonna be a dad.
Speaker 4 (17:23):
He's about swaddow child while we're doing it. Just get
him in the end zone and make Duval County cry
itself to sleep.
Speaker 3 (17:29):
That's all I'm asking.
Speaker 2 (17:30):
There was once the Bush push, not the Tush push,
but the Reggie Bush push for USC against Notre Dame.
And now this one, I don't even know who picked
him up. But if it's some way to be able
to have some sort of you know, rhyming with carry
right there, well then I mean the T shirts and
everything else they can fall.
Speaker 4 (17:49):
No, no, no, no, no, no T shirts, no, no momentum.
You were supposed to beat Jacksonville. You were better than Jacksonville.
It should have never been a gain to begin with.
The fact that Jacksonville was even in the lead at
any point in this matchup shows how incompetent your defense is.
Just be thankful that you have seventeen on your sidelines
and they have sixteen that knows how to go ahead
and throw it done.
Speaker 2 (18:06):
Seven one, three, two, five, seven ninety is the number
to get in Jason and Conro wants to get us going.
Speaker 3 (18:11):
Good morning, Jason, Well, I'd.
Speaker 6 (18:13):
Tell you what with no Mahomes, no Burroughs, no Lamar Jackson,
this would be the time for uh, the Texans actually,
you know, get it done.
Speaker 7 (18:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (18:25):
I feel real comfortable about UH tonight. Can't wait to
see Karen Rodgers get knocked on his butt. But uh yeah,
if the Texans win tonight, I really truly think they
can make a B line for the Nancy Championship. They
can they can take care of business against New England.
Watching New England play last night, and uh, you know,
(18:48):
got to be honest with you. I heard y'all talking
about Billy and.
Speaker 7 (18:52):
Bolt the Bolts.
Speaker 6 (18:54):
My brother is a Bolts fan, My best friend is
a Eagles fan, and both of them are pin rightfully so.
But it's gotta be the Texans time to shine. They
can literally, they can literally do it. They got the
defense to do it. Like you said, you know C J. Strouds,
you know, making weapons outside of Eco Collins. H Yeah, man,
(19:18):
the way the Patriots played last night, I I really
think if we get it done tonight, they can make
a bee line.
Speaker 8 (19:25):
For the AFC Championship.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
Appreciate the call, Jason, And I mean that's something too
that I.
Speaker 3 (19:31):
Did want to talk about this morning.
Speaker 4 (19:32):
Am I going to be the person that has to
say to everybody that calls in stop saying if it's
when it's when they win tonight, it's when they go
move on to the divisional round, it's when they beat
Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 3 (19:44):
Do I'd be that person today? I will? I gladly
will no.
Speaker 2 (19:47):
And then look, I mean, what's the while you work,
because you mean, you're already off to a good start
with what happened in Jacksonville yesterday. But I just I
think that there is with Houston sports fandom a little
bit of not counting before they hatch.
Speaker 3 (20:01):
I think it's kind of a trained response for us, and.
Speaker 4 (20:03):
I will do that next week when you go face
off against New England, because New England you've never beaten
in Foxborough in the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (20:09):
So on that standpoint, I think it's fair to.
Speaker 4 (20:11):
Say, don't put the wagon before the horse, because you
know what, you've got to be able to win that
game before you can actually start, you know, being a
little bit more boastful. But you're supposed to be Pittsburgh.
You're supposed to make sure that you win the division.
You're supposed to laugh at Jacksonville for finding a way
to screw it on up. You're supposed to make fun
of Philadelphia for having fans that think that they run
(20:32):
football going to run their coordinators out of town. You're
supposed to make fun of the Packers for being a
losing franchise. You're supposed to make fun of the Chargers
for having Justin Herbert. You're also supposed to win against
Pittsburgh like that's supposed to happen.
Speaker 2 (20:44):
You mean, like the jack Wagon Eagle fans who are
standing behind a fence thinking that they're being tough throwing
things at forty nine er fans, only to then go
into the stadium and see their team's season end.
Speaker 4 (20:55):
Yaman and the.
Speaker 3 (20:56):
People like that.
Speaker 2 (20:57):
See that was the best part of all of that
is you know, they're really and you know everything. It's
almost like the video that's out there of the little
dog that's barking at the rottweiler and then as soon
as the owner opens up the door, the little dog,
like you know, straightens up and isn't barking anymore because.
Speaker 4 (21:13):
That's you let out the monster. Congratulations, Na get to
pay for it.
Speaker 3 (21:18):
Don't mess with forty nine er fans, man, I'm just
telling you.
Speaker 2 (21:20):
I mean, it wouldn't surprise me at all if those
forty nine er fans went right pack, right back on
that path towards where those fans were, and if they
had some words for him and tried to find a
way to get around that.
Speaker 4 (21:31):
There wasn't words being thrown for them. There was fist
being throwned at them. And you want to what that's
there between Philly and San Francisco. San Francisco answers with fists.
Philly answers with fa fake integrity.
Speaker 2 (21:40):
Fake tough guyness. It's it's usually not fun to be
a part of, all right. Speaking of that path for
the Texans, it maybe has never been easier. We will
try to walk down said path with you right here
on the Morning Drive with Dan and Coles. We're just
getting going here on a Monday morning, Sports Talk seven
to ninety.
Speaker 3 (22:00):
Hey, it's Craig Afford.
Speaker 9 (22:03):
Listen to the Home of the Rockets on yours smart speaker.
Just ask hey, Google play Sports Talk seven ninety on iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
Speaking of the Texans, we're gonna be catching up with
Sam Warren the Houston Chronicle. He's gonna be hopping on
with us at nine o'clock. He did not make the
trip to Pittsburgh this time, but Sam all over the
Texans and some good stuff from him. So look forward
to being able to catch up with him. Someone three two, one, two, five,
seven ninety is the way to get in. As I said,
(22:33):
the path that the Super Bowl may have never been
easier for the Texans, because there you go. So just
going through all of the paths that they've had before.
The very first year that they got in twenty eleven,
you had to go up to Baltimore with a rookie
six round pick as your quarterback in TJ.
Speaker 3 (22:51):
Watt or TJ Watt, TJ. Yates.
Speaker 2 (22:54):
You'll see him to night. Yeah, I was gonna say,
you are going to see TJ. Watt tonight, but you
had TJ. Yates And in that game, the only real
difference in it was the Jacobe Jones muff punt that
gave Baltimore a short field and Baltimore was able to
take it to being able to win that game, move
on and lose to New England in the following game
before a year later getting back to that point in
(23:17):
beating New England to then go to the Super Bowl
and win said Super Bowl, which, by the way, too,
that Baltimore team that did that that year, you know
what they did it as a wildcard team. They went
to Denver and then they went to New England and
as a matter of fact, I think they might have
been the division winner that year if I'm not mistaken,
(23:37):
because I remembered it was the final time for ray
Lewis to be able to do his hot and here
dance coming out.
Speaker 3 (23:44):
Of the locker room.
Speaker 4 (23:45):
Were the division winner.
Speaker 2 (23:46):
Yeah, so they they at least had the wild card game,
but then after that they had to go on the
road for the last three, last two and then of
course go to the Super Bowl and it was the
Hardball Bowl that year. But I don't think that there
has ever been a game, either wildcard or divisional round
for the Texans that I've gone into with them on
the road, And as a matter of fact, I'll go
ahead and take out I don't think.
Speaker 3 (24:07):
I know that there never has been. This is step one.
Speaker 2 (24:11):
The other step two is you would get New England
next week if indeed you do move on tonight, which
you should do. You're you're very confident in it. I'm
very confident in it. I think most Texans fans are.
You would be facing a team that has no experience
in the playoffs. You have all the experience in the playoffs.
And I'm gonna use your words in support here, Cole
(24:31):
where you were talking about Josh Allen. Josh Allen can't
win on the road. Things are true until they're not.
He proved it yesterday. No, I can win in the
playoffs on the road, yep. And he just did it yesterday.
C J Stroud now has that has that same charge
against him.
Speaker 1 (24:45):
C J.
Speaker 3 (24:46):
Stroud's got a chance to beat said charge tonight.
Speaker 2 (24:48):
And he's got a real chance here in the playoffs
with some of the guys that have already been eliminated,
you know, with Jalen Hurts being eliminated yesterday, with Jordan
Love being eliminated over the week, with Trevor Lawrence being eliminated,
with Justin Herbert being eliminated. I mean, all of these
guys that seemingly have been getting more and more hype
(25:09):
than CJ. He's got a real chance here these next
few weeks to have people at least nationally jump back
on the CJ bandwagon.
Speaker 4 (25:16):
You've never played the wild card around on the road,
so this would be a first for you. You've only
played the number one seed in every single matchup the
week after, so basically what that's telling you is that
you have gone up as the lower tier team against
the higher tier team and you've.
Speaker 3 (25:33):
Come up short.
Speaker 4 (25:35):
This season. You're playing on the road for the first
time in the playoffs and the wild card round, and
you're not facing off against the number one team because
Buffalo did you a favor and shut down Trevor Lawrence
and made life a breeze for Houston to where now
you get to go face off against a Drake may
led roster who, while he was promising in drives last night,
you still saw the faulty eras of his waist, You
(25:56):
still saw the nerves kind of kick on up. You
still saw a team that it does not have the
identity of winning in the playoffs. So you look at
what could happen with this game. Yes, could you lose
to New England, absolutely, But I feel more so that
be the incompetence of the play calling. That'd be seeing
the same mental mistakes going into halftime where instead of
being aggressive and going for points, you just you want
(26:18):
to play keep away from New England. Your inability to
be able to stop treating Henderson little things like that
that will go such a long way to make this
a one score affair and on the road you come
up short. But besides that, there's no reason why with
the number one defense in the NFL, with the number
two scoring defense in the NFL, with the defensive line
that can get after you with two all Pro defensive
ends first and second team, with a secondary that features
(26:40):
multiple players who are going to the Pro Bowl, multiple
players who got for All Pro Accolade votes. Why you
should be nervous about placing off against Drake May because
if you just saw last night, a good defense, a
good defense hold him in check all the way up
until the fourth quarter.
Speaker 3 (26:57):
We are a great defense.
Speaker 1 (26:59):
You're an elite.
Speaker 4 (26:59):
Defense, and you have an offense that, if it doesn't
make the fundamental errors, should be good enough to guarantee
that they're hosting a playoff game in two weeks.
Speaker 3 (27:07):
Well, and it's again too.
Speaker 2 (27:08):
You know what we were talking about with the Jacksonville
Jaguars as well. I mean where you know, people were, Oh,
this team's the underdog, so nobody believes in us. And
then well, you had an opportunity playing at home yesterday
and you laid an egg. And for the Texans, I've
you know, said it, will continue to say it. They're
the underdog of all underdogs this season because you're looking
(27:30):
at a path to possibly being able to go deep
into the playoffs where every single one of them is
away from home. And I mean, as they came into
this week's game, they were three and a half point favorites.
Last I saw it was still the Texans holding at three.
So a little bit of money coming in on at Pittsburgh,
but not a ton. I just I can't, for the
life of me be a football fan and watch this
(27:52):
game without knowing very much about the Texans but knowing
probably really good defense, good enough at times offense, and
just all out a better team than Pittsburgh.
Speaker 4 (28:03):
Okay, but let me ask you, if you had to
pick right now, which guy, which team would you rather
face off against the divisional round, New England or Denver.
Speaker 3 (28:10):
I think that the Texans would much rather have Denver.
Speaker 4 (28:12):
I think it's Denver personally, and I'm not saying that
you're going to lose New England. I don't think that happens.
I saw incompetent play calling. I saw a very nervous
Drake May at times. I saw over shots to where
if you have Derek Stingley in coverage and Kamari lastern coverage,
they're picking that off and running it back for at
least a field goals up setting up a field goal,
so you got some shots there. But I do think
(28:33):
that Drake May has a little bit more juice than Bonex.
And I think that once again, you're looking at the
situation that you saw going into the season.
Speaker 3 (28:40):
If you had CJ.
Speaker 4 (28:40):
Stroud playing that game against Denver in the second half,
they win, They're sitting at thirteen and four, they're hosting
a playoff game this weekend, and they're probably hosting a
playoff game next weekend.
Speaker 2 (28:51):
Well, I mean, and it's also too, it's exactly what
you just laid out. It's the revenge factor, because I
think that that's probably, of all five of the Texans
losses this year, the one that stuck with them the most.
I mean the Jacksonville loss. Sure, you know the Seattle loss.
You were never really in that game. I mean, it
was a late garbage time touchdown that had you lose
(29:12):
by one score, But aside from that, you were trailing
by two scorers for most of the game.
Speaker 3 (29:17):
You were not winning that football game.
Speaker 2 (29:18):
So I don't think that you necessarily chalk that one
up to man, we want to see those guys again.
Speaker 3 (29:23):
Maybe you do later on.
Speaker 4 (29:24):
I would push back and say that the Buccaneers game
is the one that you have got the most because
if you had him dead to rights at fourth and
ten and he still got a first down and you
set up a game winning touchdown drive.
Speaker 2 (29:32):
But I mean, at least for the immediates, I mean,
because Tampa Bay doesn't matter. Now, Tampa Bay is not
even a round.
Speaker 4 (29:37):
But what I'm saying is that if you win that game,
you're still sitting at thirteen to four and you win
the division. So the Broncos game the reason why, yes,
I feel like that, that's the one that stings the
most because I you could have earned the number one
seed in the AFC, and the entire pathway could have
gone through Houston and you would have been on a
ten game winning street to close.
Speaker 3 (29:53):
Out twenty twenty five.
Speaker 4 (29:55):
But I'll get that Buccaneers game and all you had
to do is make a tackle on fourth down. I mean,
is the same thing. You still are the number one
seed in the A. I mean, you're still a top
two seed in the AFC. You're still hosting either Jacksonville
or Buffalo or maybe it is New England or whoever
the hell it is next week. You are putting yourself
in a position to wear for the first time there's
a divisional round game in NRG Stadium. So just like
(30:17):
it's little things like that were you could pick and
choose which won. But to me, the Tampa Bay game
was we had them, we were done, game over, signed,
seal delivered. The only excuse is that we could make
a tackle on fourth down. You can use the excuse
in the Denver game of we didn't have CJ. The
excuse here was we couldn't tackle.
Speaker 2 (30:35):
Perhaps something has been unlocked in CJ's game, and if
that's the case, could it mean a lot of really
good things. We will discuss that here as we close
out six o'clock hour on a Monday. It is the
Morning Drive with Dan Matthews, Cole Thompson, Triple A Andmanuel
Elmore hanging out with you right here a Sports Talk
seven to ninety.
Speaker 1 (30:54):
Back to Dan and Cole as the Morning Drive cruise
is on.
Speaker 2 (31:01):
The Kings. I believe now have ten wins. Let me
make sure that they're five hundred. No, the Kings now
have nine wins.
Speaker 3 (31:07):
They're under five hundred. Yeah, and they've beaten you twice
both at their place. Yeah, I just need to hear you.
Speaker 4 (31:11):
Under five hundred.
Speaker 2 (31:13):
A third of a third of their home wins this
year have come against this Rockets.
Speaker 3 (31:16):
The Rockets were automatically going to lose.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
The Rockets are the seventh seed right now in the
Western Conference. Now look, I mean there's still a long
way to go, and you're only three and a half
games back of San Antonio for number two.
Speaker 3 (31:28):
But still it's sad.
Speaker 4 (31:30):
It's sad. It's sad. And you know what, dude, here's
the worst part. It's predictable. I knew going into the
last Sides game they were going to find a way
to lose, because why, what's the record of the Kings
nine thirty? So when you play incompetent bad teams and
bad teams and rosters that have no life whatsoever, they
choose to wake up and pick violence instead of laying
(31:53):
down and just taking it.
Speaker 2 (31:54):
And that's what happened. Yeah, the road has not been
kind that are Rockets this year. They fall behind, they
fall under five hundred and eleven and twelve.
Speaker 3 (32:02):
But the home floor has.
Speaker 2 (32:04):
Been really nice at the Rockets, and the good news
for them is now they've got five straight on the
home floor coming up with some games in there included
against the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs. So
hopefully home is the right elixir for the Rockets, but
we're still talking Texans here. If you want to get
in seven one three, two, one two, five, seven then ninety.
(32:26):
The line here of the Texans conversation today is going
to be in play just because I mean, you've got
the game to night. Obviously we'll react to it tomorrow
and then hopefully we're still having a chance to talk
to them in season coming up later on in this week.
Speaker 3 (32:40):
But c J.
Speaker 2 (32:41):
Stroud says that finding happiness is what is helping him
have the season that he is, and Jonathan and Alexander
was able to catch up with him of the Houston
Chronicle exclusively in the headline reads c J. Stroud wasn't
happy with himself in twenty twenty four. How the Texans
quarterback found joy again, Stroud telling Jonathan and Alexander, of
(33:05):
course I find it fun winning, but I don't find
my joy in just winning. But even after losses this year,
I've been very joyful. And we played the cut from
him last week of talking about how he's got really
good relationship with Nick Kayley. He likes how things are
going there, but also too, I mean I do think
(33:26):
that at times this year we've seen CJ. Stroud be
able to kind of tap back into twenty twenty three
c J. Stroud as opposed to the guy that we
saw for much of last season and at times this season.
Speaker 4 (33:39):
Yes, but also there's a fine line of understanding that
what we witnessed in twenty twenty three was a one
and done and that does not mean that CJ. Stroud
can't end up getting back to a certain level of
where you win because of him, where he is elevating
the offensive personnel, where he is guiding Houston toward a
couple of big time drives and setting yourself up for
positions to where you are successful.
Speaker 3 (34:00):
But I think that.
Speaker 4 (34:01):
Much like we did with Jalen Jayden Daniels this past year,
we overshot.
Speaker 3 (34:07):
We overshot our shot.
Speaker 4 (34:10):
We put the wagon well before the horse and said, see,
it's gonna be.
Speaker 3 (34:12):
A top five quarterback in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (34:14):
And he probably still can be a top seven, top eight,
top ten quarterback in the NFL. But I don't view
him in the same light as Joe Burrow or Lamar
Jackson or Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes. Here's the difference, though,
You have a defense that can bill you out of
trouble to where as long as you're playing like a
top ten quarterback, you should feel like that you're on
(34:35):
the best roster. Houston's identity is more cohesive around what
their entire organization is versus just one certain player. Like
for Josh Allen, he has to win for Buffalo. There's
no the Buffalo Bills a right. No Josh Allen is
winning you that football game. For Baltimore, Lamar Jackson is
winning you that football game. How many times have we
said that Patrick Mahomes has wielded the Chiefs from the
(34:57):
clause of defeat and thrown them into the wins category.
Houston's made sure to realize that right now, we're playing
cohesive as a team to where CJ can have a
bad mistake or two and ultimately it's not going to
come back to bite them because that they can get
out of trouble with having a solid defense.
Speaker 2 (35:13):
Well, I remember, too, this is the Texans team that
started off the season oh to three, and even before
they started going on their nine game win streak, they
were three and five at that point, and they lost
a lot of close one score games and CJ talking
about still having belief in his guys. Honestly, people probably
don't believe me, but I never thought we were going
to keep losing. We weren't getting blown out. We were
(35:34):
losing every game by one score. There were things that
we needed to fix, of course, but I never really
panicked when we lost that third game. I thought we
were going to win out. Well, I mean, it took
a couple more losses to get there, but soon enough.
Speaker 4 (35:48):
CJ was right, No, and I think at the same time,
the entire premise was it was one faulty era in
every single game.
Speaker 3 (35:55):
Like look at that oh and three start. What happened?
Speaker 4 (35:57):
You allowed Davis Allen touchdown when probably needs j Garner
Johnson coverage Darigon Mowally fumbles the football inside the red zone.
That's one. The next game, fourth down stop against Baker Mayfield.
Speaker 3 (36:07):
You get that.
Speaker 4 (36:08):
You in the football game, they don't even get a
chance to score. They score with one second left over
Sean White. So you lose that game by one point.
You go to Jacksonville, bad fumbo by Nico Collins, terrible
execution trying to cover Brian Thomas Chenior for a forty
six yard game, A big time interception by Antonio Johnson
because of Ariantay Erstrie as a rookie tackle is going
toe to toe with a top ten pass rusher and
(36:29):
josh heinz Allen.
Speaker 3 (36:30):
That gets pressure on CJ.
Speaker 4 (36:32):
It's these little details that we're talking about that has
made Houston go from being a twelve and five team
to where they could have been a fifteen to two team.
I mean, like, he's very right on the standpoint of
there hasn't been a game that we've truly been blown out.
The one game that you could say that they were
never in was the Seattle game on Monday Night Football.
Outside of that, they were in the Buffalo game, and
they were in the Denver game, they were in the
(36:52):
Buccaneers game, they were in the Jaguars game, they were
in the Los Angeles game. And to be completely transparent,
it wasn't like any of those teams did something special
in that game to where they felt like they were inferior.
Houston messed up. Houston cost themselves those wins. Like and
I understand that, you know, we can go ahead and
be non biased. We could say that, you know, it's
a Houston radio market, so we're supposed to talk positive
(37:13):
about Houston, but like be honest for a second, did
Trevor Lawrence do anything in week three that really impressed you?
Did the Rams do anything in week one that made
you go, Wow? That team is built to go to
a super Bowl? Did Tampa Bay do anything to where
you were saying, oh my god, how how were the
Texans gonna even be close to beating that team? No,
you were saying to yourself, why the hell did we
(37:33):
allow this team to beat us? Why the hell did
we make that mistake? Why are we putting ourselves in
a position to be oh?
Speaker 3 (37:38):
And three? That was the narrative around.
Speaker 2 (37:40):
Team Well, and I mean there are at least a
couple in the NFL this weekend that you know, met
that disappointment.
Speaker 3 (37:47):
The Texans are hoping to avoid that.
Speaker 2 (37:48):
We'll talk about it right here as we get into
the seven o'clock hour on a Monday. It's Dan Matthews,
It's Cole Thompson, Triple Emmanuel Elmore.
Speaker 3 (37:56):
This is the Morning Drive with Dan and Cole. Sports
Talk seven.
Speaker 9 (37:58):
To ninety kd E Houston, KTDHD two Houston.
Speaker 1 (38:05):
As a Rocket.
Speaker 9 (38:08):
This is Sports Talk seven ninety, your home for your
home teams and iHeartRadio stations guaranteed youman, this is the
Morning Drive with Dad and Cole.
Speaker 2 (38:27):
And the winner is gonna get to the New England
Patriots up in at Foxborough. So we'll see if it
is indeed going to be the Texans tonight. And then
of course the other side of the AFC draw Buffalo
able to move on, so they're gonna go out to
Denver and take on the Broncos Rockets losing last night
one to eleven ninety eight to the Kings in Sacramento.
Speaker 3 (38:46):
They have now lost three straight.
Speaker 2 (38:48):
We'll get to a little bit of what happened around
the league and how it pertains to the Texans two
here in just a second.
Speaker 3 (38:55):
But Ray wants to weigh in.
Speaker 2 (38:57):
Good morning, Ray, Ray, Ray, don't do this to me, man,
I was gonna say, Man, I was looking forward to.
Speaker 1 (39:06):
Yeah, we're worried.
Speaker 3 (39:08):
We're worried that maybe Gary and Spring had gone ahead
and messed with your phone line.
Speaker 1 (39:12):
But go ahead, Budd, No, no, why did Scary.
Speaker 4 (39:16):
Out access to your phone line? That's the first question.
Speaker 3 (39:18):
I wanted to be impressive.
Speaker 4 (39:19):
If he did, you probably had the exactly operative.
Speaker 10 (39:25):
I have a big problem. I have a large parlay
right now and the hard Rock is trying to get
offered me a lot of money to cash out, but
I want to wait the last thing, get the Texas
to get the big payout. But I want to cash
it out because I'm scared. This is involving my money. Now,
if it's for entertainment, I wouldn't care, but this is
(39:47):
involving money.
Speaker 5 (39:48):
And if I cast this Texas.
Speaker 10 (39:50):
Game out and they win, I'm gonna lose a lot
more money. But I just I don't think there's gonna win.
And I'm a diehard Texan fan, right.
Speaker 4 (40:00):
I gotta ask you, I gotta ask how much are
we talking about?
Speaker 5 (40:03):
We?
Speaker 4 (40:03):
Are we pushing a couple of pression double digits in
the thousands?
Speaker 3 (40:06):
Are we pushing a single digit?
Speaker 10 (40:08):
No? No, it's not in the thousands. It's not in
the thousands.
Speaker 3 (40:11):
It's a big time bet.
Speaker 4 (40:12):
Then I'm thinking, like, you're putting twenty five grand down
At this point, I'm like.
Speaker 3 (40:15):
Hell, yeah, cash ow Well, I mean for him and
what he can place.
Speaker 10 (40:19):
Yeah, I can cash out there, give me two fifty
right now. But if the Texans win, I'll get like
four to twenty. You know, I just take the two
hundred and fifty bucks and not care whether it is
I want the whole all of the money. But I
just don't think that I'm looking at twenty to seventeen Steelers.
That's just what I feel in my gut. I don't
(40:40):
know why. I just don't know why. And like Cole said,
CJ hasn't shown us enough. I haven't seen enough. Sure,
And you got Haywood over there, you got TJ. Watt,
you got Aaron Rodgers two point nine seconds.
Speaker 11 (40:59):
I hope will Am.
Speaker 10 (41:00):
Can get to him so I can win his money,
but I may cash out before a game. So I'm nervous, guys,
I'm nervous.
Speaker 2 (41:07):
Here's the thing, Ray, I've been in your situation before.
As a matter of fact, twenty nineteen, it was Divisional
round weekend and it had I won, no thanks to
Pete Carroll and the Seattle Seahawks.
Speaker 3 (41:18):
Had I won.
Speaker 2 (41:19):
I was going to go at the time over to
Beau Ravage, cash my ticket and then buy a seat
to go to the National Championship game that night in
New Orleans. Instead went to a place right there near
the stadium and watched LSU win. So the personal as
opposed to the wallet and thinking about it, that's what's
got to come in So if you feel like you
(41:40):
really would miss out on that money, well, then go
ahead and cash out, because it's that last game that
usually gets you. The Texans are a three point favorite.
Speaker 4 (41:47):
I'm telling you, Ray, you need to hold out. I'm
telling you right now, you need to trust me. I
have been on a heater for the last forty eight hours.
Speaker 1 (41:56):
I told you.
Speaker 4 (41:58):
I told you that Trevor Laura it was going to
be cardboard Dodo and cost the Jacksonville Jaguars football game.
Was I right?
Speaker 9 (42:05):
Yes, you were right?
Speaker 12 (42:06):
All right?
Speaker 13 (42:06):
Correct?
Speaker 4 (42:07):
I said that we were going to see the Texans
go play on the road against the New England Patriots.
Speaker 3 (42:12):
Was I right?
Speaker 5 (42:13):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (42:14):
So why you doubt me?
Speaker 12 (42:15):
Now?
Speaker 4 (42:15):
Ray, I'm telling you keep let it run, let it ride,
Let it ride, and then you call back in tomorrow.
And when you call on tomorrow, I'll send you my
Venmo account, and then you're gonna split the profit with
me for you holding out home, Right, that's all a
great deal.
Speaker 10 (42:28):
No, No, I'm talking about I'm trying about not going
to champions a ticket. I'm trying to get a ticket
to the National Championship in Miami. I'm trying to say
for that.
Speaker 2 (42:36):
I want to You're gonna need a lot more parlays. Say,
you know, with some of the prices I'm seeing out there, Ray,
you might, you might. You might have to hit up
hard rock seminole a lot more this week.
Speaker 10 (42:46):
I know, I know, I know. Oh you just just
have a little fake barbecue out in the park and
letting go home.
Speaker 3 (42:52):
I like it. I like it.
Speaker 2 (42:53):
Well, good luck, buddy, whatever you decide to do, hopefully
it works out for you.
Speaker 3 (42:58):
There you go.
Speaker 2 (43:00):
Yeah, cardboard dodo. I've never heard that one before. Is
that like, you know, it's on the cardboard? Like, how
does that work? It just means you're a piece of crap.
Speaker 4 (43:07):
And I can't say the S word on air because
I want to get fined her and I want to
hit the dump button.
Speaker 2 (43:11):
Wet paper bag, you know, No, I hate the wet
paper See.
Speaker 3 (43:14):
Okay, here's the thing.
Speaker 4 (43:15):
My brain goes to the point of where, like I
visualize it and anything wet that it just it sits
with my stomach.
Speaker 2 (43:21):
It's like, yeah, I mean, there's there's many different ones.
Speaker 3 (43:25):
And I'm with you on that. Me and you are
both very sensory peace.
Speaker 4 (43:28):
So somebody once said, oh, you know, it's just wet
toilet paper. That just it just sits in my brain
so weirdly. I don't know why.
Speaker 2 (43:35):
She probably really reminds you of like as a kid,
you know, having a house wrapped and then you know
you got to be able to like clean it up
and do all of that.
Speaker 3 (43:41):
No, just it's it's wet. It's wet stuff. That just
weirds me out. That sound supposed to be wet.
Speaker 2 (43:45):
All right, Let's let's stop weirding each other out and
weirding out the audience, and in the process.
Speaker 3 (43:50):
You're the one. What to me, man, I'm just trying
to move on here. Roger is gonna help us move on.
Good morning, Roger.
Speaker 1 (43:56):
How are you doing, guys?
Speaker 14 (43:57):
It's cold up here, brother, Oh you're in uh huh.
Speaker 15 (44:02):
Yes, sir, it's cold.
Speaker 11 (44:03):
It's snowing.
Speaker 3 (44:05):
That's good.
Speaker 14 (44:06):
That's good after that old man out there in Pittsburgh. Baby,
let's bring a win home. The path has been like
you said, the path has been said.
Speaker 15 (44:13):
Let's go to New England and that offense was Astrocia's
less Nay, they couldn't do anything against the Chargers. Hey,
let's get this win one game at a time, and
let's get let's get on the road to the Super Bowl, baby,
San Francisco. I believe we got a preview of it
weeks back when we.
Speaker 14 (44:30):
Saw San Francisco in Houston. Let's do it again, baby,
I'll see you all out there. Let's go for a
big win. Love your show, guys.
Speaker 2 (44:38):
Hey, appreciate it, Roger, and thanks so much for listening
to us on the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (44:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (44:42):
I mean, look, I was following Aaron Wilson and a
lot of the Texans reporters that are up there Esta.
I know they were out at Tom's Watch Bar up
there in Pittsburgh and it was deep steel blue, liberty white,
and battle red all over the place there.
Speaker 3 (44:55):
So Texans fans have fired up. Man. I like it.
Speaker 1 (44:58):
I love it.
Speaker 3 (44:58):
It's start yes, yes, yeah, sure.
Speaker 2 (45:02):
Yeah absolutely, Manah, come on up. It's a game day, man.
If you only get so many of these years, okay,
game day that.
Speaker 4 (45:09):
You're supposed to go into the stadium that you travel
to and beat the breaks off of a forty one
year old major.
Speaker 2 (45:14):
That's why a lot of people threw in a lot
of their money to you know, buy the tickets both
playing and game and go up there for it. Because
you're saying, you know what, I want to be here
for history. Okay, I want to be here when this
team finally wins their first road playoff game.
Speaker 4 (45:28):
Okay, But here's the problem, dude, is that I tell
people all the time, act like you've been there before,
and like again, Indiana fans, they haven't been in the
situation ever before, so it's very easy for them to
go ahead and wait to see what happened. So like,
I'm totally fine when it comes to that kind of stuff,
But like, for me, what it comes down to is,
I've been here before. The Texans have been in the
wild card round before, the Texans have beaten a team
like Pittsburgh before, the Texas handle business in the wildcard
(45:51):
round before, the Texans have been able to beat the
breaks up of people in the wildcard round before. I'm
not paying attention to this game because I believe this
game is going to end with a twenty three to
ten for Houston. They're going to move on to the
divisional round. And for the first time in franchise history,
not only could you beat the Denver I mean, the
Newing the Patriots in the postseason, but you can be
playing for your first AFC championship and it comes to
(46:12):
a level of I'm at the point of guys, I've
been to the wild card round so many times, like
I've I've written rock and roller Coaster sixty thousand times
in Disney World. That's really cool. Let me go take
a ride on tower tear I've never done before, Like,
let me do something like that. Because I've already done this.
I know what to expect, I know what the outcome
is gonna be. I haven't done something before winning a
divisional round, So I'm so focusing on that that I
(46:35):
just need to make sure that we don't have the
fun of our errors and lo behole, we're gonna be
in the next round.
Speaker 3 (46:40):
Like that's how it is.
Speaker 2 (46:41):
Hey, the fundamental error is like the Green Bay Packer
is blowing a twenty one to three lead.
Speaker 4 (46:45):
Hey, guys, incompetent kicking when you have Kayimi Fairband, you're good?
Speaker 3 (46:51):
Am I wrong on this? Like there's anybody else sitting.
Speaker 4 (46:54):
Here right now saying that, Oh, Brandon McMahon is over
Kayami Fanband.
Speaker 3 (46:57):
I'm totally taking McManus.
Speaker 2 (46:59):
No, I mean, and then especially too, I mean, Kymie
Fairbanner is the reigning AFC Special Teams Player of the Week, but.
Speaker 4 (47:04):
He's not a first team All Pro for some reason,
didn't even get a single vote, But I mean that
makes any sense.
Speaker 2 (47:08):
And then I mean, of course the Eagles last night,
where their offense has been awful all season, and then
AJ Brown, who has been very vocal about and he's
even in a commercial talking about how he's always open,
and I think yesterday he showed you, well, maybe you're
open because you can't catch.
Speaker 3 (47:23):
Excitment about that.
Speaker 4 (47:24):
It's the fact that you're such a the arrogance of
a guy like AJ Brown, and there's nothing to do
with his character off the field.
Speaker 3 (47:30):
I almost wind like this clear.
Speaker 4 (47:32):
But the fact of the matter is you complain and
bitch about not getting a football, you get your opportunity.
Both passes that you dropped were running the money from
Jalen Hurts, and I am a Jalen Hurts standard that
I always will be because of alabamatizing because if he's
from the state of Taxes and from Channel View, so I.
Speaker 3 (47:47):
Will always stand for Jalen Hurts.
Speaker 4 (47:49):
But even if it was terrible throws yesterday, neither of
the passes to AJ Brown were terrible neither one, and
then to leave the locker room and not even answer
reporters for your inadequate playing shows all I need to
know about where you are in the pecking order of
(48:09):
the long term status with the organization.
Speaker 2 (48:11):
If he's gone after this year, I was gonna say,
if I'm Philly, he's gone. I mean, it's how is
he not gone? You know, as a veteran player, because
I mean a lot of times this will happen with
a young guy. I almost feel like you kind of
get one in those situations, and it can happen during
a regular season.
Speaker 3 (48:27):
In the playoffs, something like that happens.
Speaker 2 (48:29):
Face the music, but the s get out, get out
there and talk about it, take the accountability for it.
Speaker 4 (48:33):
At the same time, there needs to be changed in
Philadelphia regardless, like Kevin Batula is gonna be out of
a job, and like this is coulda actually lead to
the conversation of what do you do if you're Nickkaylee
because like everyone's like in the city saying that, yeah,
you're in a Nick Keaylee after a twelve and five season,
if the offense looks like it did yesterday for Philly
tonight for Houston, that can lead to an actual conversation.
Speaker 3 (48:53):
That's where you can actually.
Speaker 4 (48:54):
Sit back and go we at the re evaluate everything
that went wrong. Because if we closed the year out
on a nine game when streak, we went into a
city that we were supposed to win, we were we
were a favor going into the matchup. We had the
better defense, we had the better offensive execution, we felt
good about our offensive line, and yet somehow we're going
home and Pittsburgh is moving on to the divisional round.
Speaker 2 (49:14):
Texans are trying to meet the hype tonight of being
able to move on to the next round. But also too,
the honors have already come. We will share those with
you here as we get it going in the seven
o'clock hour. Again, it's gonna be lying share Texans conversation today.
So you want to be a part of its seven
one three two one two five seven ninety And it's
seon one, three, two on two five, seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (49:35):
It is the Morning Drive with Dan and Cole Sports
Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 9 (49:40):
The Morning Drive with Dan and Cole on Sports Talk
seven ninety, home of the Strolls, Rockets and Houston's best
sports talk.
Speaker 3 (49:50):
The Pro Bowl Honors.
Speaker 2 (49:51):
Usually now it's more of just a symbolic nobody cares
jes sure. I mean yeah, nobody ever really cared about
the game and everything, and going into it in the
NFL knew that. So then they started saying, Hey, let's
have dodgeball and quarterbacks throwing at drones and moving targets
and all of this, and that's pretty much the Pro Bowl.
Speaker 3 (50:10):
Now.
Speaker 2 (50:11):
Well, the All Pro obviously is you would probably say
the honor of all honors. The Texans had three making
the AP All Pro Team First Team honors, going to
Will Anderson Junior and to Derek Stingley junior. As you
have Stingley and Quinnon Mitchell from the Philadelphia Eagles as
(50:31):
first team corners, and then the edge rushers where Miles Garrett,
Willy Anderson Junior, and Micah Parsons. And the third in
all of this was Daniel Hunter getting a second team
honors alongside Brian Burns and Aiden Hutchinson. So at least
that way, we've been asking for national respect for this team.
(50:54):
And I mean a huge part of that said respect
this season has been with this defense. It's been with
those two guys upfront in Anderson Junior and in Daniel Hunter,
so's everybody raise.
Speaker 4 (51:05):
Who once again agree with Cole on something. I'm glad
that you abought the sawn up. Thank you Dan for
doing this for me. Will Anderson Junior is the first
to get paid between the two. He's an all pro.
One guy is one guy, isn't one guy. Is very
much in the running to be Defensive Player of the Year,
probably would win the award of Miles Garrett Dian set
a record that is never going to be broken again
(51:25):
in my opinion, and he has two Pro Bowl appearances
versus the one.
Speaker 3 (51:30):
I understand the value of a quarterback. I understand that
you want to.
Speaker 4 (51:33):
Get your quarterback paid, but that market price is always
going to go on up. It doesn't matter if you
sign him now, it doesn't matter if you sign him later.
The market is going to dictate more defensive ends and
more pass rushes to get paid instantaneously. Michael Parsons is
making forty six million dollars. Do you really want to
make Will Anderson a fifty six million dollar player or
do you want to maybe get ahead of it and
get a fifty million dollars go done?
Speaker 1 (51:54):
Well?
Speaker 2 (51:55):
I mean, and that's the thing is, you know the
price continues to go up and up with the season
that he's putting together. But it's also too it's a
big part of what have you done for me lately?
In at least the last couple of years, Will Anderson Jr.
Has taken significant steps forward every single year. And it's
not only that, it's also what he means to your
locker room. I mean, because make no mistake about it,
(52:15):
Will Anderson Junior is the leader of this team.
Speaker 4 (52:17):
He is one of I would say three major leaders
of this team. I think ceja'son other I do I
will give a credit. I think Will is number two,
and I personally do think that Daniel Hunters I think
is he's all share number three.
Speaker 3 (52:30):
I think those are the top three guys that you
look at.
Speaker 2 (52:33):
Yeah, I mean al Shaier because I mean again, you
got to get back to why al Shaier was brought in.
He was brought in kind of like Jimmy Ward, where
it was Demiko saying I need guys in that locker
room that understand me and know what I'm about and
be able to have them kind of set the tone
that way. And you've succeeded with both of those guys.
(52:54):
And I think that Anderson Junior too, for him being
able to, you know, you know, step in and and
do what he's done here in just three seasons. I mean,
he is somebody that obviously came from a program in
Alabama that had high expectations every single year and just
kind of being able to carry that standard over into
this locker room.
Speaker 4 (53:14):
You have a defensive Rickie of the Year candidate. You
have a guy that has gotten better when it comes
to winning. In the past rush win rate, he's number
one in the NFL. He also has gotten better when
it comes to his sack total and his tackle for
loss total and his quarterback hits total. Every single season
in the last two years, Will Anderson Junior has twenty
three sacks. He has thirty six sackerds for loss, he
(53:36):
has sixty one quarterback hits. He's an All Pro. He's
a defensive Rickie of the Year. He's a two time
Pro Bowler. He has gotten better with every step along
the way in his game, and he's only going to
get better. He's up for a contract negotiation. I again, CJ.
Stroud is gonna get paid. I do not think for
one second the Texans are letting him walk out that door.
Speaker 3 (53:56):
He's not going anywhere.
Speaker 4 (53:58):
But if I am Nick Casserio, I'm not making any
phone calls about franchise tags. I'm not making any phone
calls about trades. I'm not making any phone calls about
going out in free agency. Nothing is getting done until
I get Will Anderson Jr.
Speaker 2 (54:10):
You can't let that guy have any chance to be
able to test the market because if that happens, then
you're not getting him back.
Speaker 4 (54:16):
I'm not letting him do it because I think about this.
What if he has another great year? What if he
has fifteen tackles for a six to fifteen sacks acond.
Speaker 2 (54:23):
Would you only be able to know you obviously know
more about this than I do. Would you only be
able to do the fifth year option on one of them?
Speaker 3 (54:30):
I don't think you can. I think you can do
it on both.
Speaker 2 (54:31):
Okay, so you could do it on both, But then
at that point you'd have a log GM of you know,
handing out massive contracts at the same time the way
you'd be handing go ahead and knock out one now
be able to set yourself up to be able to
get the other one done. And I'm with you because
Anderson Junior at least in the short term, is going
to be cheaper than what you're gonna have to pay,
say Trail, if.
Speaker 4 (54:49):
You pay it will right now, he's at the end
of your kid deal. You don't pick up the fifth
year option, but he starts being paid in twenty twenty seven.
He's on the books for a lucrative mega extension. You
get him for five years, hundred and ten million dollars
whatever it is. But if you wait until you pick
up the fifty year option, and then he goes into
next season and you're trying to get a deal done,
Let's say he has fifteen sacks. Let's say he has
(55:10):
twenty three tables for loss. Let's say he has thirty
one quarterback hits. Let's say he wins Defensive Player of
the Year. So now the market that was initially set
at like, say, forty eight million dollars equally, now we're
at fifty two or fifty five or fifty eight. And
then there's the conversation of, well, we could either get
you paid now, but then we run the risk of
(55:30):
not being able to afford CJ, not being able to
afford some other players that we want to get signed
long term. Thus, letting other players walk and it hurts
your team when if you sign him now, you're gonna
eventually get the restructure contracts, or that be for Nico
Collins and for Derek Singley Junior, in for Titus Howard
if he's still on the books, or whoever else you
have in the locker room. But you know at this
(55:51):
point that you have to be able to pay for Will.
And the other part is, let's just say that you
have to have the really hard conversation, we can't keep
it the deal hunter, we have to let go of
one of these two to go ahead and pay for
the other. Well, Will's gonna be twenty five and Daniel's
gonna be thirty three, and he's gonna be off the
books in twenty twenty seven because it's only a two
(56:11):
year contract, so he's on the books for next season
by the time that Daniel would be to leave Houston.
Or if you want to come back, you could take
a one year contract and be a more cheaper, team
friendly deal. Will would be the highest paid, and then
you're just replacing one high paid market value for another
high paid market value.
Speaker 2 (56:29):
Seven one three, two one two five seven ninety. I
think this is a show. First, I do not believe
that we have ever gone to Dublin, Ireland to hear
from someone, but a guy who's got a great name, Daniel,
wants to weigh in there.
Speaker 3 (56:41):
Good morning Daniel.
Speaker 6 (56:44):
Hey guys, how are you doing?
Speaker 16 (56:45):
Hello from Oh my god, you really are?
Speaker 3 (56:47):
You're full on Irish dude? Hell?
Speaker 1 (56:48):
Yes, how are you doing?
Speaker 17 (56:52):
I'll put them on into you.
Speaker 4 (56:53):
I am fantastic. My dude got me a bolt of
energy right now? Bro slanje at Daniel, how you doing?
Speaker 16 (57:00):
Launch and slaunch it. I'm good. But listen, guys, I'm
calling because I hope you can help me, because, to
be honest with you, I need a bit of help.
Speaker 7 (57:10):
I'm looking to report a theft robbery?
Speaker 17 (57:15):
Is that?
Speaker 1 (57:15):
Can you help me with that?
Speaker 16 (57:16):
Because the way I see it tonight, the Steelers are
gonna steal a win. What's up though, Let's go Steelers?
Speaker 5 (57:27):
Hey?
Speaker 2 (57:27):
I mean, I don't think you're gonna have a lot
of people agreeing on our end and it would be
a steal for sure.
Speaker 3 (57:33):
Heya, what time is it there?
Speaker 17 (57:34):
Man?
Speaker 5 (57:36):
Uh?
Speaker 16 (57:36):
It's Steeler time.
Speaker 4 (57:38):
Baby, I know, I know, but just like what what what?
Speaker 3 (57:40):
What's time of the hour?
Speaker 18 (57:41):
Right?
Speaker 13 (57:42):
Uh?
Speaker 16 (57:43):
It's a it's a one. It's about one thirty in
the afternoon.
Speaker 4 (57:46):
Okay, that's that's totally understandable for you to be drinking
at this time of the day.
Speaker 3 (57:49):
I gotcha appreciated, Daniel. You're You're welcome.
Speaker 16 (57:53):
You know, in America, you guys use Colgate to brush
your teeth, and Ireland we use Jemison.
Speaker 17 (58:00):
You know that exactly.
Speaker 2 (58:01):
That's what I've heard. That's what i've heard. Well, well, Daniel,
do appreciate the call. You're welcome back anytime. And you know,
if if it doesn't, you know, if if the theft
is thwarted, please please give us a shout back or
just calling tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (58:15):
I love hearing your voice every morning. It's a great
it's a great refresher.
Speaker 1 (58:19):
You know what I'm gonna do you guys a deal.
Speaker 16 (58:21):
I'm going to call back tomorrow at the same time, win,
lose the draw, and we'll we'll have a pint again.
Speaker 3 (58:26):
I love it.
Speaker 4 (58:26):
Are gonna send me over a pint because dude, I'll
gladly it's seven twenty nine in the morning.
Speaker 3 (58:30):
I got nothing to do the rest of the day.
Speaker 16 (58:33):
No, I'm not going to send you a pint, but
you are going to get on a plane to Dublin
and are going to have a pint.
Speaker 3 (58:38):
There we go, There we go. I'll take it. I like,
I like the idea. I'll say to my just for
the ticket, prefice, appreciate, appreciate, Daniel. I'd be about going
to uh to Ireland. Is he gonna pay for me
to go?
Speaker 2 (58:48):
You know, go go see you know the family roots there.
Absolutely I would.
Speaker 4 (58:52):
I would just wait until they played the Irish game
in college football next year, like they always do.
Speaker 2 (58:56):
I mean, soon enough, the the NFL will go. Actually,
the NFL is already in Ireland, haven't haven't they No.
I think they go next year for the first time. Okay,
so there you go. So man, there we go. We
got a first on the show.
Speaker 3 (59:07):
I love it. I love it.
Speaker 2 (59:08):
I am all about international callers, and especially too when
you give us a call and and and the call
matches what we're hoping the call will be. Because the
only thing that I was fearful of there was that
like it was going to be an American living over there.
And it's just like, I mean still cool, but I
mean the fact that we got you know, full on
irishman calling donol whatsoever.
Speaker 4 (59:28):
It is actually stupid if you're going to call call
us overseason you're in America.
Speaker 2 (59:31):
Well, I mean look, I mean, you know, sometimes you
need to have a little taste of home. I mean
some sometimes, you know, no matter where you are in
the world, you want to be able to catch up
with the homeland home.
Speaker 4 (59:40):
You live in Houston, that's your homeland. That's your homeland.
I mean people other place.
Speaker 3 (59:47):
My homeland is in Denver, Colorado. We're gonna go to
that stande. I mean, you know, you do live other places.
You can live other places. Have you have you lived
outside of Atlanta and Houston?
Speaker 4 (59:56):
Where else have you lived? Sagene, Texas?
Speaker 3 (59:58):
Okay? So in Texas? So that's your homeland. Yeah, so
there you go.
Speaker 2 (01:00:02):
That's your homeland. But I mean, you know, for Daniel
to give us a call, we appreciate that very much.
And for anybody else that is in the international space,
please please seon one three, two, one, two, five seven
ninety is the way to get in before we get
to uh looking at the shield here in the final
segment of this hour, do you want to get into
a little bit of the college football playoff because a
(01:00:25):
harsh truth was realized on Friday nights, and we'll discuss
that here as we continue here, it is the Morning
Drive with Dan and Cole right here on a Monday
Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 18 (01:00:37):
Hey, it's Robert Ford from the Astros broadcast team. Catch
every Astros game on Sports Talk seven ninety. I mean
iHeartRadio app Home of your Astros.
Speaker 3 (01:00:48):
Good morning, John. How's my favorite John doing Buden?
Speaker 11 (01:00:51):
Hey man, I'm doing real good man. You know, it's
always good when you can wake up in the morning.
Somebody can make you laugh anyway. And Ray, they must
be smoking better stuff than I've ever had because they
living in fantasy land somewhere. Do you honest do you
fellas honestly think old Heywood that's not one hundred percent
(01:01:14):
and old Aaron Rodgers and an old DK Metcalf even
though DK met Caf is tough. No, man, they're not
gonna beat these young third Brids, these young third Bridge
is gonna kill them. And I tell you, fellows, I
tell you something else too. I wouldn't be surprised tonight
if to Miko Ryans does not bliss a little bit
(01:01:37):
more than he has all ceased, you might as well
go ahead on even if Aaron Rodgers get one pass across,
you might as well bless and you got four quarters,
you can kill it. Get the game over with real quick. Hey, fellaws,
I'm gonna go get me some Buffalo's shrimp from Hooters,
and I'm gonna enjoy this game to night.
Speaker 1 (01:01:56):
We'll talk maybe tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (01:01:58):
I like you, John, appreciate the all. Yeah, I mean,
you're gonna have the eat tonight. Which, by the way,
to Unt even mentioned the question of the day. And
this is one of those days when this question is apropos.
What's your superstition? One, You don't have a superstition. You're
not even a little stitious.
Speaker 3 (01:02:15):
Everything happens for a reason.
Speaker 4 (01:02:16):
Might as well as let him as we'll embrace it.
Speaker 3 (01:02:18):
Okay, So, so you're you're not a believer.
Speaker 4 (01:02:21):
Decisions are overrated, they're stupid.
Speaker 2 (01:02:22):
So I mean, would would that make you a believer
in fate? That you think that it's already been reading
to an extent?
Speaker 4 (01:02:28):
Yeah, I think that there's nothing you can do to
change society. Whatever's gonna happen is gonna happen. You might
as well just live life to the fullest way you
can see.
Speaker 3 (01:02:34):
And that's the thing too.
Speaker 2 (01:02:34):
Like I said, we'll get into the college football playoff
here just briefly, but this is one of those that
you know, the scenarios you play out in your head.
If we're talking a Texans loss tomorrow morning, we're talking
about a team that they themselves lost the game, it's it.
This is one of those matchups that I look at
and you can one hundred percent say, you play your game,
(01:02:55):
you're winning. I mean, if you continue to be the
defense that you've been, if you are just capable on offense,
you limit the penalties as much as possible, even though
the Texans are one of the highest penalized teams in
the NFL. If you do those things, there's no reason
we're not talking about Hey now it's time start getting
ready for Mike Brads.
Speaker 4 (01:03:14):
You're winning this game if you play a C plus game.
Like I'll be completely real. I went back and I
watched the Miami ole Miss game on Saturday because I
was really just bored in the morning. I wanted to
see sure Miami played a C plus game. But Miami
was the more physical team, Miami was the more dominant
team defensively, Miami made the fewer errors. Miami put themselves
(01:03:35):
in a position to where they knew that they could
win with the explosive plays. The Texans could play like
Miami against Ole Miss and have a C plus overall
performance where it's not elite offensively, there's rop passes, you know,
bad third down conversion because of a false start, you
put yourself behind the six because of an eligible receiver downfield.
But you're just the better team. You just have the
(01:03:57):
better defense. You just are able to win with the explosives.
Like I'll be completely real if you have the same
game plan as you did against the Los Angeles Chargers, Like,
let's just use that game for an example. You go
up fourteen to nothing, two big explosive touchdown passes to
two receivers, and you force a couple of turnovers and
you win with your sack rate. You're gonna win this
football game by ten points. That is probably where we are.
(01:04:20):
If you have anything less than a C minus game,
you're losing. But a Semas game is failure, and it's
failure on your part. It's not failure because of you know,
Pittsburgh's goods, because if you just were terrible.
Speaker 2 (01:04:31):
Well, and then you know, with Indiana doing what they
did on Friday Night twenty nineteen. LSU started to trend
on Twitter on on Friday night, and I was like,
why is that the case? But it was just the
way that Indiana was able to just like almost on
a dime, be able to say, hey, by the way,
now you're down by twenty eight. I mean, that's what
(01:04:52):
we saw that season with Joe Burrow in that group,
and we're seeing the same thing right now with Fernando
Mendoza and this Indiana team. I don't think there is
any way possible that Indiana loses next Monday. Okay, not
a single way.
Speaker 3 (01:05:03):
But here's the difference.
Speaker 4 (01:05:05):
When you look at that twenty nineteen Dolls shoot team,
how many superstars were on that roster to go to
the NFL.
Speaker 2 (01:05:12):
It wasn't even just on offense. Offense alone, but I mean,
Grant Delpit has continued to have a great career, Pat
Queen having a great career, which you're going to see
him tonight.
Speaker 4 (01:05:21):
Derek Stingley, who was a freshman that season. Right, you
had multiple defensive lineman go to the NFL. You had
multiple defensive tackles go to the NFL. His running mate,
who is Patch Queen's running running mate.
Speaker 3 (01:05:31):
Was that to Monk Clark? Yeah, yeah, he's in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (01:05:34):
So I mean, like the constant names that we've seen
come through the Indiana Hoosiers. They're a great team because
if they do the little things right, they don't shoot
themselves in the foot. But I don't view them as
a team that we're going to see all these household
names make it to the next level. Like I think
Elijah Surratt the wide receiver, he could end up being
a pretty big time name. Pat Cougan the interior offensive lineman,
(01:05:57):
he could end up being a starter in the NFL.
For Nanda Mido is gonna be the first overall.
Speaker 3 (01:06:00):
Pick it was.
Speaker 2 (01:06:00):
Jacob Phillips was the other one I was trying to remember,
and he also was a third round pick. So it's
like all these names that we saw come on out.
I don't view that with the Indiana Hoosiers. Like if
you told me neutral field today and everyone plays.
Speaker 4 (01:06:11):
The hypothetical game twenty nineteen LSU versus twenty twenty five Indiana.
Of all the national champions between those two, I think
this would be the closest matchup because if you have
a team that has the fundamental mechanics down at a
pristine level versus elite talent. But at the end of
the day, elite talent Trump said anything else, and that's
why I think they'd still won by ten.
Speaker 3 (01:06:32):
I think that's the difference here.
Speaker 2 (01:06:34):
Yeah, I mean, just yeah, I mentioned Jacob Phillips being
part of that team, calevon Chase on who now part
of the New England Patriots, Grant Delpit that you even mentioned,
I mean, Jamar Chase just unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (01:06:48):
I mean, Taris Marshall, Justin Jefferson, whoever the hell the
tight end was, Clyde Edwards, Hilaire. You had multiple offensive
lineman there, Joe Burrow.
Speaker 2 (01:06:55):
Foster Morrow, who continues to earn money in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (01:06:59):
It's like, again, they were a super team that was assembled,
and it's like I get the notion of why people
want to go ahead and bring up this Indiana versus
twenty ninety LSHU because of this will be the first
time that we've seen a dominant run the way that
we saw with LSU. But LSU just was built off
pure talent and adrenaline, Like this team is built off
(01:07:19):
of mechanics and consistency.
Speaker 3 (01:07:21):
I think that's really the difference here.
Speaker 4 (01:07:23):
If you tell me the LSU's gonna play a perfect game,
like they don't have any false starts, they don't have
any miscommunication, no turnovers.
Speaker 3 (01:07:31):
They still win by at least.
Speaker 4 (01:07:32):
Ten because if Indiana is not gonna give you ten points,
they're gonna take ten points away from Indiana.
Speaker 2 (01:07:37):
Subone three two on two five seven ninety is the
way to get in, uh Roger, be patient with us
because we do want to look at the shield. So
we're gonna do that coming up, and then we'll get
you involved, so you want to join them again seb
One three two on two, five seven ninety. Some expectations
already being set on the coaching carousel front and a
(01:07:57):
little bit of an uphill battle for one of the
teams still alive in the playoffs. We'll have that much
more with you is so we again look at the shield.
Right here on a Monday, it is the Morning Drive
with Dan and Cole Sports Talks seven to ninety.
Speaker 9 (01:08:12):
They are the Morning Drive. Here's Dan Matthews and Cole Thompson.
Speaker 3 (01:08:19):
He's not that's not news. That's a travesty. That's a funeral.
Speaker 4 (01:08:22):
That's an absolute gutter wasteland to go watch your career die.
Speaker 3 (01:08:27):
It's sad as well.
Speaker 4 (01:08:28):
Does it written in an obituary rather than saying it's
time with the Cubs. I hate the Cubs, Dan, I
absolutely no questions. I cannot stand. There are two franchises
in all sports that I cannot stomach in the world,
and you will never hear me say a nice thing
about them. The Chicago Cubs are number one. The Dallastars
are number two. I would never say a dang nice
thing about them. And now at the root against Alex.
Speaker 2 (01:08:49):
Breg the way you are with the Cubs is almost
like the way that Austin Powers' dad was about the Dutch.
There's two things I cannot stand, people's intolerance of other
people's culches and the Dutch.
Speaker 3 (01:09:00):
You want to go around the shield.
Speaker 2 (01:09:02):
Yes, we can do that right here. Let's look at
the shield here on the morning drive.
Speaker 1 (01:09:08):
Here. All right.
Speaker 3 (01:09:13):
So the coaching carousel is starting to turn.
Speaker 2 (01:09:17):
And the biggest name that everybody's gonna be looking at first.
I think once this happens, then you're gonna start seeing
others start being filled is John Harbaugh. So report yesterday,
according to Jay Glazer of Foxes that he's going to
limit his interviews, like basically let teams know, Hey, I'll
let you know if I'm interested to talk with you
about being your head coach, not the other way around.
(01:09:39):
Like you know, they could reach out and he'd just
be like, no, you didn't make the list.
Speaker 3 (01:09:43):
Sorry.
Speaker 2 (01:09:44):
But according to reports, his top choices are among the
Giants and Falcons jobs. But also another source adds that
the Titans are in third place and that there is
real in mutual interest between Hardball and the Cleveland Browns.
Speaker 4 (01:10:02):
Okay, so you said the top two of the Falcons
and the Giants in some order. Okay, the Giants I
get because if you have a quarterback in place, the
piece is defensively to where you can work around, you
have a young wide receiver, elite nighbors, and you have
a top three draft I mean, top five draft pick.
Speaker 3 (01:10:17):
I can get that.
Speaker 4 (01:10:19):
Atlanta feels like the one to where do you believe
you can turn around Michael Pennock Junior's career to where
it's healthy, where he's healthy enough and stable enough to
be a qualified quarterback.
Speaker 3 (01:10:28):
Because if you have that, you already have a good
offensive line.
Speaker 4 (01:10:31):
You have arguably the best running back in the NFL
and John Robinson have a good wide receiver corps, and
the defense says that pieces the Browns is weird because
if you have two first round picks but you still
have Andrew Berry as the GM, which sucks. And the
Titans is also interesting because if you have the most
salary cat space in the NFL and a quarterback that's
already locked into place, that did show you some potential.
(01:10:53):
If you want to go on a pecking order, which
one would you say is his best fit?
Speaker 2 (01:10:56):
Though out of all of those right now, yes, hmmm,
I would probably have to go with Atlanta.
Speaker 4 (01:11:06):
I would say Atlanta because at least in Atlanta you're
getting a guy in Matt Ryan as football as head
of a ball operations, who has a mutual respect for you.
You also gonna be going into a situation with a
new GM where in Tennessee there shows the old GM,
in New York there shows the old GM, and then
in Cleveland there shows the old GM.
Speaker 3 (01:11:26):
So yeah, you're gonna be the.
Speaker 4 (01:11:27):
Fresh face, but at the same time, you're gonna be
fighting with the guy who's trying to save his job
for a team where you're coming on in to hopefully
fix this almost instantaneously. Where Atlanta it just feels like
a few nuts and bolteam betweet here and there, and
you can be a playoff.
Speaker 3 (01:11:41):
Team, all right.
Speaker 2 (01:11:42):
So it did seem like that the Packers could possibly
be one of those teams that are looking to move on,
But less than ten minutes ago, Adam Schefter reporting the
Packers are now expected to try to work out a
deal in the coming days to keep Matt Lafleur in
Green Bay. Per sources, laflor is currently one year remaining
on his content. Both sides want to have some clarity
moving forward.
Speaker 4 (01:12:03):
I'm sorry, but like why And I understand that Matt
Lafleur has been a great coach. I understand that he's
a good offensive mind that he would be very sought
after in the NFL market.
Speaker 3 (01:12:12):
You just blew a twenty one point lead to the
Chicago Bears.
Speaker 4 (01:12:17):
You let Caleb Williams kick your ass, You cast yourself
an opportunity to move on to the divisional round. You
did these things, and the incompetence of your offense in
the second half was the entire reason you lost the
game to begin with.
Speaker 3 (01:12:31):
So it's like, if I'm looking at this.
Speaker 4 (01:12:33):
As a Packers fan, Am I just accepting mediocrity? Am
I just okay with being a one and done in
the playoffs? Of I okay with Jordan Love just doing
the bare minimum to get us by and then watching
as our team capsize on himself.
Speaker 3 (01:12:46):
Because that's leadership at that standpoint.
Speaker 4 (01:12:47):
Mark Murphy's saying that we're okay with just being a
playoff team that goes to the wildcard around and finds
a way to shoots off on the foot later on.
Speaker 2 (01:12:54):
That's all it is, man. And finally, here George Kittle
done for the season. If you're watching that game yesterday,
tearing his achilles, and now interesting to see what his
availability is in twenty twenty six for the forty nine ers.
Speaker 4 (01:13:08):
Do you have any conversation with yourself to say that
you might have seen the lost of George Kittle?
Speaker 2 (01:13:13):
I mean, when you get to this age, yeah, it's
a real possibility. But I mean at the same time,
we saw it with Aaron Rodgers, and he's been able
to come back and he is likely going to miss
all of twenty twenty six with it. It's a nine
to twelve month recovery for an achilles. George Kittle is
thirty two years old. By the time he returns, he'll
be thirty three. He's already dealt with four other season
(01:13:35):
ending injuries. I think that, yes, you are always going
to want to keep that door open. But at the
same time, when you deal with that many lingering, long
term injuries and go through the rehabilitation process, there comes
a conversation internally with the organization. As much as we
love you as a player, as big as a piece
and cornerstone you've been to our success, we got to
(01:13:56):
have somebody that's more reliable.
Speaker 3 (01:13:57):
We got to have somebody that's more healthy.
Speaker 4 (01:13:58):
We have to have somebody that can play this and
we know that we're not gonna have to worry about
the durability. And at the same time, who's gonna take
a flyer on George Kittle with this many injuries.
Speaker 3 (01:14:07):
Yeah, he's been a great time.
Speaker 4 (01:14:08):
I mean, he's been a four time All Pro, a
seven time Pro Bowler. He's one of the best tight
ends that we've seen of the twenty first century. But
the reality comes in and says, Guys, with this many injuries,
you have to really ask yourself, what is his value
going to be if we bring him back.
Speaker 2 (01:14:23):
Only thirty two years old though, so it's not like,
you know, he's completely you know, long in the tooth there.
I mean, I still think he's got some good years
left in front of him.
Speaker 4 (01:14:30):
Okay, but when he's thirty two with four season ending injuries,
which really means he's thirty four, so he's gonna be
thirty six in terms of his body and the way
that his body's.
Speaker 2 (01:14:38):
Fell, because I mean, again, you know, it takes about
a year to get that explosiveness back, and I mean
at least with that recovery.
Speaker 3 (01:14:45):
I mean, it's gonna be interesting to see.
Speaker 2 (01:14:46):
I mean, you know, Aaron Rodgers, God, you know, he
was trying to come back in that one season, and
then also too, I mean saying, you know, we're gonna
have to wait and see what happens with Daniel Jones too.
Speaker 4 (01:14:55):
But George Kittle has played two seasons, has played through
two full seasons. That's it in his entire NFL career.
So I mean we're talking about a guy that's shown
you that not only the injuries will stockpile, but they're
long standing. And that doesn't mean that I want see
George kittlell go. I think he's great. I think he's
been an awesome piece for their runout in San Francisco.
But at some moment you have to have the hard
(01:15:15):
conversation of you're constantly getting hurt and it is now
becoming a question mark of how are we going to
be able to win without you? In fact, right now
it feels like more often than not we're trying to
find ways to win without you than finding ways to
get to the football.
Speaker 3 (01:15:27):
All right, So whistle while you work.
Speaker 2 (01:15:29):
That's something I like to say around here because one
of us in these two chairs on the Morning Drive, well,
they told you so and it paid off. We'll have
that for you here as we get into the eight
o'clock hour on a Monday, you want to join us
sub one three two on two five seven ninety. Again
it's sub one three two on two five seven ninety.
As we continue here, Sports Talk seven ninety AB.
Speaker 1 (01:15:50):
Houston ATVHD two Houston.
Speaker 9 (01:15:52):
The Astross, the Rockets, Buckets, Fast Befall your home for
your home teams.
Speaker 1 (01:15:59):
This is Sports Talk seven ninety an.
Speaker 9 (01:16:01):
iHeartRadio station, guaranteed Human. This is the Morning Drive with
Dan and Cole.
Speaker 2 (01:16:16):
You were listening to us in the six o'clock hour
and maybe we'll have it here a little bit later
on the show some of the nice highlights from yesterday.
Speaker 4 (01:16:24):
In the case of we'll get it done, We'll get
it done next sement, don't work. I have a big celebration.
I'm going to take my victory, LOP. I'm going to
celebrate the proper way.
Speaker 2 (01:16:33):
So the Buffalo Bill is able to go into Jacksonville
yesterday and handle the Jags, much to probably the chagrin
of UCF Jaguar. That was the Jags fan that I
was calling for yesterday, that UCF underscore Jaguar. He's like
to be pretty mouthy when it comes to coming after
the Texans. But if you follow them on Twitter, which
(01:16:55):
I'm not really sure why you would, Jaguars content CPA,
well maybe that second party somewhat useful relaxed. The tweet
was a joke, is part of his byline there. But no, Hey,
look man, you start trying to whistle while you work
without having the team that can be able to match
wits with you on that, well then that's what you get.
Speaker 3 (01:17:15):
So I gotta belie.
Speaker 2 (01:17:16):
I gotta believe that a lot of Jaguar or excuse me,
Textan fans We're probably coming after him pretty hard.
Speaker 4 (01:17:24):
Yesterday I deserved to, well, listen, I'm usually deserve to
go after every single Jacksonville Jaguar fan that never exists.
They ran their mouth that to like that they run
the division, acting like that they're the future of what
is going to be the AFC South and lonebell hold
your quarterback that once again we've told you time and
time and time and time and time and time. Hey,
so how many more times I have to say time
and time because I can do it in a while.
(01:17:44):
Is overrated as all a hell in these type of moments.
Speaker 3 (01:17:48):
And what happened. He came on in and found a
way to lose.
Speaker 4 (01:17:52):
The game, just like somebody told you he was going.
Speaker 3 (01:17:55):
To do on Friday.
Speaker 2 (01:17:56):
Yeah, Gustavo cardenas trash ass mfs and then somebody else
who has looks like seven to one to three in
their Twitter account, which I can imagine that they're from here.
Speaker 4 (01:18:08):
It was from there, They're from Denver. It was can
Kun on three.
Speaker 2 (01:18:13):
So that's what the Jags have because he he does
a live show, I guess afterwards, and that was the
way that people were reacting to it as it was
just aptly name Jaguars Loocid to Bills in wild card matchup.
So that's what was happening in Jacksonville yesterday. Well that
and then also to somebody tried to encourage Liam Cohen
(01:18:33):
in the postgame press conference and some people did not
like that.
Speaker 4 (01:18:36):
Okay, well are we going to talk about it or
do you want to surpass it?
Speaker 3 (01:18:40):
It's totally up to you, caress, you decide.
Speaker 4 (01:18:42):
Because if there's people out there that all have their
own opinion on this is the reason why I don't really.
Speaker 2 (01:18:46):
Have much of an opinion on it, is because I mean,
press conferences for the most part, are a complete waste
of time. You're not going to get any information out
of it. And I understand, you know, you've got the
big jay journalists out there who love to at every
turn tell people how to do this job. And you know,
obviously I share my opinions here and there, but like
something like this, it was a thirty second interaction like
(01:19:07):
it wasn't like it completely derailed the entire press conference.
And I understand if you want to say there's a
time and place, sure, fine, whatever, But I mean it's
just it wasn't that big of a deal to me,
and for like everybody to lose their minds over it
the way it did. I just thought it was kind
of really just ridiculous, and it was just a chance
for people that wanted to be able to virtue signal
about doing this job and the right way to do
(01:19:30):
this job. Honestly, for the most part, fans don't care.
They don't care. Just get me the information, that's all
I care about. However you do it, I really don't care.
Speaker 4 (01:19:39):
Okay, and I will play double's advocate here.
Speaker 3 (01:19:42):
What was the question that was asked? It wasn't a question.
It was the point. That's the point.
Speaker 4 (01:19:47):
You're in a press commerce who ask questions if you
started off something like that and then threw in a
question afterwards completely of a notion, or if you pull
them to the side and say afterwards, hey, listen, good season,
great opportunity, You're only gonna get better from here.
Speaker 3 (01:20:00):
Awesome, that's fine.
Speaker 4 (01:20:01):
But it was nineteen seconds of you just making the
moment about yourself for a second in my opinion.
Speaker 2 (01:20:07):
So okay, I mean, and that's the thing too, is
kind of to you know, devil's advocate, your devil's advocate
right here is last week with Tatsuya am I when
I threw out some Japanese to them, I don't know Japanese.
I looked it up on my Google translator there for
a second and just throw it out. Did you do
it though, in the middle of the press conference? I did,
but then it led right into a short question, right.
Speaker 4 (01:20:26):
But okay, But so you did it in the middle
of a press conference, but you at least followed up
with the question afterwards.
Speaker 3 (01:20:30):
Yeah, all it was was what did I say?
Speaker 2 (01:20:32):
Did I say knichua no, arigato, arigato, Tatsuya houstone a aokoso.
Speaker 4 (01:20:39):
Okay, So you try to have a language barrier that
may or may not have worked, but still you ask
a question afterwards to where you continue the conversation. I
think that's the part that you're I think everyone's losing here.
I don't have a problem with what happened because of
I know that in markets everywhere outside of Boston and
New York, there is going to be this type of reporter.
Speaker 3 (01:21:00):
It just is the new norm.
Speaker 4 (01:21:02):
It is. What I have a problem with is that
you go when you have nineteen seconds, and then you
don't ask a question afterwards. You make it a clear statement,
and then supposedly after that you went and get clapped
as the person got at the podium, and that's where
it's like, Okay, we're now we're going a little bit
too far into that direction.
Speaker 3 (01:21:22):
And I understand that there's a fan but like I.
Speaker 4 (01:21:24):
Remember from for years years, people would go on Twitter,
people would complain about how the media doesn't ask the
tough questions, the media doesn't ask the right things, the
media doesn't do, and then people are asking tough questions afterwards.
Speaker 3 (01:21:37):
But then you're rewarding.
Speaker 4 (01:21:39):
Somebody for giving a little pep talk. And I understand
there is a level of community for that. I have
no problem if you want to pull them off to
the side, I have no problem you want to go
ahead and have a conversation with them later on.
Speaker 3 (01:21:50):
It's you didn't ask a question, but in a place
to where it's a Q and a yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:21:54):
My whole thing with it, too, is like do you
even have that type of relationship? I mean, because despite
what some people do think, there are some in the
media who have better relationships with players and coaches than others.
But it's also though too, it's like, is that really
your place to be able to do it, I think
is another part of it. I mean more often than
(01:22:16):
not now you get phone numbers, so I mean you
could very easily just fire off a text be like, hey, look,
you know, loved work. I've done it a few times. Hey,
loved working with you this season. Hopefully get a chance
to do it again next year. Just really appreciate everything.
But it was a text.
Speaker 3 (01:22:30):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (01:22:31):
But here's the other thing that we'll say. It's really
interesting and this is where again I'll play Deuvil's advocate
for every situation. It's a little bit different. It's really
interesting that we're calling out one reporter in Jacksonville for
giving a pep talk and saying, good job of Liam,
calling a company for what the season was for a
team that did go from four to twelve to thirteen
and four.
Speaker 3 (01:22:48):
I mean, it is funny to see that.
Speaker 4 (01:22:51):
Meanwhile, in Cleveland, another reporter told Kevin Stefanski in his
last press conference, Hey, as we'll let you know that
I really hope this is the last time that we
speak to you. This is the last time that we
you know, that we have a conversation. You were going
up against really tough teams all year. You had your
hand tie behind your back, because that's also pandering in
its own right. So have a narrative set in the middle.
Either all is okay or none is okay. But don't
(01:23:12):
jerrymander and say that one person is gonna have to
get this done or that the other person can't. That's
where I have the issue with it, is that you're
either all okay with bashing a reporter for coming on
into a press conference and doing it and making it
about them or not because of it it's a different
city or a different market, all is the same in
my eyes.
Speaker 2 (01:23:31):
Here here's the question that I would ask, And I mean,
you know, one of the guys that was very vocal,
Mark Long.
Speaker 3 (01:23:37):
I know who he is.
Speaker 2 (01:23:39):
He's been a longtime AP reporter there in the Jacksonville area,
so he's been around the team for some time. But
you know, he obviously had some issues with it, and
others have too, and a lot of times too. As
I said, you're not gonna win that with the audience.
I mean, more often than not, people just look at
people in this industry as all you do is complain.
All you do is bitch about how this job is
(01:23:59):
this way, and it's and it's not as great as
it's cracked up to be. And for the most part,
people out there are like, hey, dude, I work nine
to five every single day.
Speaker 3 (01:24:08):
Okay, then I go home and I deal with my
wife and my kids.
Speaker 2 (01:24:10):
Or maybe you know, I deal with my husband and
and you know, and and and my kids whatever it is.
Speaker 3 (01:24:16):
I mean, you know, both men and women alike.
Speaker 2 (01:24:19):
It's just to fans these are very much and to
most people in this industry too. These these are highly
coveted jobs. These are jobs that tons of people would want.
That's why I mean, I'm not saying that it's taking
it for granted, but it's also though too. My question
to them would be did it affect you doing your job?
And if the answers know, then stop, okay stop.
Speaker 4 (01:24:40):
At the same time, here's where the big story when
everyone's like saying, oh, well, you know, you're just jealous
that your question isn't getting a lot of attention that
you know, this is the thing that's said. Nobody's jealous
about that stuff. I'm telling you right now, nobody in
the media cares about that type of persistence of like
somebody getting accolades and you're not getting your flowers to
even if you think that they're small minded, rotten brain,
all negativity, anything like that. What I will say is
(01:25:03):
is that at the same time, it's a time and
a play situation. That's all it is. Like like that,
like that's it. Nobody cares if you said the text
mess afterwards. Nobody cares you pull them off of the
sidelines afterward and tell them that. But the problem goes
back to where was the question asked?
Speaker 3 (01:25:17):
What was the question asked? There wasn't one.
Speaker 4 (01:25:20):
So what you did was is that you made it
to a point of where it was all about you
being center stage.
Speaker 3 (01:25:24):
That was it in my opinion.
Speaker 2 (01:25:26):
Someone three two one two five seven ninety Roger Biscuit.
See you guys right there working in We will get
into the rest of the wild card weekend that was
and also to the Texans, the path maybe has never
been easier. We'll have that for you right here. As
we continue in the eight o'clock hour, it is the
Morning Drive with Dan and Cole. Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 9 (01:25:46):
Back to the Morning Drive. Here's Dan Matthews and Cole Thompson.
Speaker 3 (01:25:53):
Right, I told you, I called it.
Speaker 4 (01:25:57):
I said for weeks on end watches, Lawrence and the
Jacksonville Jaguars, let down the city of Duval, let down
the county, let down the AFC South, and they prove
that they are f r A.
Speaker 3 (01:26:11):
You d say it with me, ladies and gentlemen.
Speaker 4 (01:26:14):
Foods, duped, bamboozled, swindled, horse ridden, dumpster fire. Once again,
Trevor Lawrence showing exactly who he is as the quarterback
of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Speaker 3 (01:26:32):
Sit down, shut up.
Speaker 4 (01:26:34):
And make sure that you always listen from six to
ten for great sports takes.
Speaker 2 (01:26:40):
Say, I think that's the only reaction you can have
to that highly energetic soliloquy.
Speaker 3 (01:26:45):
We just got right there.
Speaker 2 (01:26:46):
You had that built up, you had, you had that
ready to fire you you were good to go.
Speaker 4 (01:26:52):
I am doing victory lops on victory lops. I don't
even need caffeine this morning because it is listening to
the sheer tears of Duval County and every money out
and jackson will say detectioninger did, they're an overrated team
and that we're gonna run the AHD shout moving forward. Yeah,
we still good.
Speaker 3 (01:27:09):
The best quarterback in the conference. And stop voice because
he stopped the losers their knit which they're morons. They stink.
Speaker 4 (01:27:17):
There's nothing good about their city, there's nothing good about
their franchise, there's nothing good about their their overall identity.
They have a great coach that's still in the critical
moments of a fourth quarter. Could not stop Josh Allen
from connecting with Brandon Cook's former Texan thank you for
knocking off the Jacksonville Jaguars. Couldn't stop Josh Allen fro
getting in the end zone, and they made their quarterback
that they paid two one hundred and sixty five million
(01:27:39):
dollars to be the face of the franchise show why
he is an incompetent buffoon leading the charge.
Speaker 2 (01:27:45):
And that's what happened yesterday in Jacksonville's the Jags go down.
The Patriots also winning last night, and that means that
whoever wins tonight between the Texans and Steeler is gonna
move on to the next round. The Rockets they lose
to the Kings last night one eleven to ninety eight.
So aside from that, the Texans path forward in the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (01:28:07):
We'll get into that here in just a second.
Speaker 2 (01:28:09):
But you went to weigh in someone three two, one,
two five seven ninety Rogers been patient Roger, good morning.
Speaker 5 (01:28:15):
Hey, good morning, fellas, having Monday to all. Hey have
the game day as well. Hey check this out. No, man,
if we if we don't, we don't beat these Dealers,
it's gonna be because of one reason and one reason only.
That offense just wasn't good enough. It was you know,
we have only one way, so to loud, and that's
not putting up points on the board. And this defense
(01:28:37):
only needs, you know, twenty points to win basically. And
I don't see this banged up defense that Steve Lussius
that's going at least twenty three, twenty four, maybe even
twenty seven some more in that range. I just don't
see him stopping this man at all period. Aaron Rodgers
is too slow, he's not mobile anymore. He's a statue
West version of him. So just's not get a twisted Fellas.
(01:29:00):
And if we do lose, that's gonna be a whole
different conversation, a conversation I don't want to get to
with early the postseason. And I'll dig into the Rocket
cash on Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (01:29:10):
All right, guys, I appreciate the call, Roger. Yeah, I mean,
you know, as we've mentioned, it's other than I mentioned
here and there this morning. We're we're pretty much all
textans today. It's not a one topic day just because
of you know, what happened over the weekend, because I
do want to get into the Jags just as long
as they just like, there's certain things that you know,
(01:29:31):
will annoy people.
Speaker 3 (01:29:32):
Whininess is one of them. But that's all they're doing
right now is they're whining.
Speaker 4 (01:29:35):
They're bitching, They're moping there, crying, They're they're complaining about
what went wrong and how that they're supposed to.
Speaker 3 (01:29:40):
They're not even bargaining yet.
Speaker 4 (01:29:41):
No, they're not even not anywhere near that at this point.
They're not begging for they're trying to say. Here's the
funny thing I saw yesterday multiple live streams going on
as the crash out was burning alive, that they were saying, well,
you know, the good news is that we still have
the best quarterback in the division. Brother, in what world
do you have the best quarterback in the division? In
a critic, did you not watch as your sunshine happiness
(01:30:03):
in Rainbow's Dude leya dud against a bad Bills defense.
Speaker 3 (01:30:07):
This is not a good Bill team whatsoever.
Speaker 4 (01:30:09):
They have a quarterback that's able to bail them out
of trouble, and he did so again yesterday.
Speaker 3 (01:30:14):
You had that.
Speaker 4 (01:30:14):
Game locked up, but in two of the critical moments
coming out of the second quarter, and need to be
able to put yourself into the end zone. Get through
an interception to Shaq Thompson coming out, we needed to
get into field goal range to guarantee this game is
going to go to overtime.
Speaker 3 (01:30:27):
Get through an interception. And I said all.
Speaker 4 (01:30:30):
Last week and I've said for weeks on end quarterback
play is going to be so dire for this postseason run,
and the quarterback that you feel more confident in is
going to come away walking away with a DUB. I
felt more confident in Drake May over Justin Herbert. Drake
May won a football game. I felt more confident Matthew
Stafford over Bryce Young. Matthew Stafford won a football game.
I felt more confident in Kayleb Williams over Jordan Love.
(01:30:52):
Kayleb Williams won a football game. Felt more confident in
Josh Allen over Trevor Lawrence. Trevor Lawrence won a football game.
And I felt more confident in brock Perty than I
did in Jalen hurt at this offense. Brock Perty won
a football game. So I'm sorry, like.
Speaker 3 (01:31:03):
There's no level of where I'm going to sit.
Speaker 4 (01:31:05):
Here and listen to you come up with excuses or
nonchalant attitudeness about what what wrong yesterday? What rent wrong
is that you add a quarterback that could not live
up to the moment, and he's never going to live
up to the moment.
Speaker 3 (01:31:18):
And I'm not.
Speaker 4 (01:31:19):
Saying this to be harsh. I'm saying this to get
your mind straight. This is the reality that you live
in down in Duval County. The Texans that they are
asking right now CJ. Stroud to put their team on
their back. I think you can do it for one drive.
But here's the difference. They have an elite defense, they
have elite special teams, and they have an elite coach
at the helm to where he's allowed to make a
mistake and he'll get bailed out of trouble.
Speaker 2 (01:31:40):
But that's the thing though, I mean, he really does
not make a ton of mistakes with the football. I mean,
and sometimes that comes back to hurt him. I mean,
because he's holding onto it longer. But I mean, aside
from the Chargers game this year, I can't remember any
other game that you're just like, man, you are being
reckless right now.
Speaker 16 (01:31:59):
Now.
Speaker 4 (01:31:59):
Honestly, the Chargers game is the one that I would
say is probably the most where why are you making
that throw when you have to? I thought that there
were moments in the Chiefs game that he had that,
but that was only the third quarter, but still they
were sending cover zero blitzer.
Speaker 3 (01:32:09):
At that point. And it's also though too.
Speaker 2 (01:32:11):
I mean, I think that it's early success that kind
of dictates for you to feel like you're comfortable you
can kind of take those shots, and he had that
in that game, and then after that that's when the
Texans offense kind of, you know, stalled out, like you
had to hold all with your defense.
Speaker 4 (01:32:26):
Do you think that there was one game this year
that CJ. Stroud absolutely lost the Texans the game.
Speaker 2 (01:32:34):
It wasn't great in the Seattle game, but as I've
pointed to numerous times, that fourth quarter, I think he
kind of unlocked twenty twenty three CJ again.
Speaker 4 (01:32:41):
Because like I can be mad of him throwing two
interceptions in the Jacksonville Jaguars game Week three, but at
the same time, one was because of a rookie offensive
tackle let Josh heines Allen get past him, and he
tipped the ball in the air for it to hang it.
Speaker 3 (01:32:52):
Right, And really either the bigger point of.
Speaker 4 (01:32:55):
Emphasis in that game was the Nico Collins fumble, Like, honestly,
I thought that was more dire than the just shoting
reception or at least the late c shining reception.
Speaker 3 (01:33:02):
So it's like the only game where.
Speaker 4 (01:33:04):
It felt like this is really putting us in a
position of we need you to kind of wake on
up was the Chargers game. And it was after you
were already up by fourteen, and you just were making
really bad decisions and terrible reads across the intermediate part
of the field.
Speaker 2 (01:33:18):
Someone three two and two five seven ninety hadn't heard
from this this guy in a minute. It's good to
hear from him again, Biscuit, Good morning, Hey, top of the.
Speaker 1 (01:33:26):
Morning, my brother walk back.
Speaker 13 (01:33:30):
It's kind of hard man, I don't know, because you
said you was playing devil advocate or whatever that press conference.
Speaker 3 (01:33:36):
That what the young lady saying, I.
Speaker 13 (01:33:38):
Goes under the category no big deal here. We have
to make a big deal out of everything now.
Speaker 3 (01:33:45):
Just people want to get upset everything.
Speaker 4 (01:33:50):
People want to get upset at everything, Biscuit.
Speaker 3 (01:33:52):
That's the problem.
Speaker 11 (01:33:54):
That's the problem.
Speaker 13 (01:33:55):
You know. Oh man, oh, I disagree with you, mad
about the quarterback play, and it is important.
Speaker 11 (01:34:02):
I agree with you.
Speaker 13 (01:34:03):
I think the only game really would have kind of
just won the game was Josh Houten and a little
bit of a Metro staff And the other game, mainly
to me, is the defense, right and you know, Green
Bay defense just let him down.
Speaker 10 (01:34:23):
They had the game that love play good enough, they
just let him down.
Speaker 12 (01:34:27):
And it's uh.
Speaker 10 (01:34:29):
New England's defense.
Speaker 19 (01:34:30):
Last night just was stifling, you know what I'm saying.
Speaker 10 (01:34:33):
And that's what the Texas need. Turn the ball. Just
don't turn the ball in the ac man.
Speaker 6 (01:34:40):
I can't see nothing or or as an office.
Speaker 5 (01:34:44):
Of juggernauts in the game.
Speaker 10 (01:34:46):
It's just it's all about just not turn the ball over, man,
and being efficient.
Speaker 19 (01:34:51):
You know, it can't be just three and outs, three
and out three hours. It's just don't turn the just
don't turn the fall over. And they ghet the old
man the regular is expect it's fusing it over like.
Speaker 5 (01:35:08):
That and Roger.
Speaker 10 (01:35:13):
Wouldn't want to get.
Speaker 3 (01:35:21):
Yeah, hey, biskey, you're kind of breaking up there. Appreciate it. Uh,
is there a helium week in town?
Speaker 2 (01:35:29):
I was gonna say, I mean, any of you all
out there on the Loop, you you all good? In
the Chipmunks, somebody on the Southwest Freeway. Can you confirm
you know anybody out there? No, it's it's Christmas. Christmas
was actually last week, Alvin, the chripmunks. You're fine, Yeah,
it was. It's it's our phone. Well we'll get it
figured out. But no, I mean, it's really, you know,
(01:35:50):
kind of he just said what we've said all morning.
And I understand it's not the hottest of takes, but
it's just it's.
Speaker 3 (01:35:56):
It's the god's honest truth.
Speaker 2 (01:35:57):
I mean, look, you know, hot takes are are good,
and I think they're even better if you truly believe it,
because then you can back it up. It's the it's
the chuck and duck approach that I don't appreciate in
this business at times.
Speaker 4 (01:36:09):
Here's one thing I will say that I agree with
him on. Defense is going to be the reason why
the Texans win tonight. It's also going to be the
reason why most teams are winning in the playoffs because
of the defensive stops that you saw in the Carolina
Panthers Los Angeles Rams game was enough for Matthew Stafford
to lead his team down the field to get into
scoring range. The inability to close things out for the
for the Chicago Bears game was the reason why the
(01:36:31):
Packers lost the football game. The reason why Los Angeles
only lost by three was because of I mean, the
reason why Los Angeles made this a game for four
quarters was because of their defense cut them in it.
But I still think that when you look at quarterback play,
it's dire and it has been. I mean, Caleb Williams
out through Jordan Love. He had two interceptions, but he
(01:36:52):
out threw them. You look at Matthew Stafford, he out
threw and had more touchdowns than than than Bryce Young,
you look at you look at uh Rock Party versus
Jalen Hurts. Party had better numbers and better metrics and
had a higher complice percentage of higher passer.
Speaker 3 (01:37:07):
Rating than than Jalen Hurts.
Speaker 4 (01:37:09):
So it's it's a two way street that, yes, your
defense needs to be great, but on the flip side,
you also need to have your quarterback in the critical
moments deliver. And that's all I'm saying, is that critical
moments tonight, CJ's gonna have to deliver, just like we
saw Josh Allen deliver, just like we saw Trevor Lawrence Snott,
just like we saw Caleb Williams deliver, just like we
(01:37:32):
saw brock Party deliver, just like we did see Jalen
Hurts too.
Speaker 3 (01:37:35):
So and it's not all on him.
Speaker 4 (01:37:36):
It's on the wide receivers, it's on the bad communication,
it's on the bad play call. But the quarterback play
is going to be a dire situation.
Speaker 3 (01:37:43):
Well, continue that Texans conversation.
Speaker 2 (01:37:45):
You want to get in someone three two and two
five seven ninety Allen's south Side, see you right there.
Speaker 3 (01:37:49):
Part of said Texans conversation.
Speaker 2 (01:37:51):
Also coming up in thirty minutes, we're gonna catch up
with Sam Warren of the Houston Chronicle.
Speaker 3 (01:37:55):
Look forward to doing.
Speaker 2 (01:37:57):
That and also to the path ahead for the Texans.
Should you get through tonight, maybe it's never been easier.
We'll lay that out for you as we continue here
in the eight o'clock hour on a Monday, it is
the morning Drive with Dan and Coles Sports Talk.
Speaker 3 (01:38:10):
Seven to ninety.
Speaker 2 (01:38:11):
I'm always pumped to be able to talk centergenics in
the low t Center with you. I think you all
know that if you follow me on social media. I've
been singing the praises like nobody's business the last few months,
and that's for good reason.
Speaker 3 (01:38:23):
Let me take you back to you.
Speaker 2 (01:38:24):
Late July, they have you get on the scale right there,
and it seriously was the scene with Ben Stiller and
the kids in Heavyweights right there.
Speaker 3 (01:38:32):
Hey, get on the scale.
Speaker 2 (01:38:33):
Get off the scale, because I saw three hundred and
five pounds And as soon as I saw that, I
was like, you got to be kidding me. You've allowed
yourself to get to this point with just sheer laziness,
lack of motivation, just inconsistency at the gym, and your
eating habits have been this poor that you're now to
this point. Come on, Dan, let's go, let's get it together.
Centergenics has helped me do that with the TRT treatments
(01:38:55):
and also to a personalized plan that is tailored just
to me. That's what you can when you get with
the folks over there at Centergenics, get your numbers tested
and then figure out the game plan from there. That's
what you get with Centergenics in the Low T Center again,
Fixmilow t dot com. Fixmilow t dot com. You want
to make twenty twenty six new Year, New Yu. There's
(01:39:15):
never been a better time to get on over to
Centergenics in the Low T Center. Because if you are
in the same category that I was and you want
to be able to turn it around, have some help
to get you there.
Speaker 3 (01:39:25):
TRT can do that.
Speaker 2 (01:39:26):
I just started peptide therapy too, CJC twelve ninety five.
That's what I'm using right now and the results have
been amazing in terms of my workouts, recovery, and also
to just general overall metabolism and being able to help
with that as well. Again, fixmlow t dot com, fixmilow
t dot com. Fixmlow t dot com to get in
touch with Centergenics in the Low T Center.
Speaker 18 (01:39:48):
The newsy Hey story Eastman, it is good for tares.
Speaker 3 (01:39:53):
Listen to Rockets Radio or your smart device.
Speaker 1 (01:39:56):
Just ask Hoplay.
Speaker 4 (01:39:57):
Sports dot seven ninety on iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (01:40:02):
The Path for the Texans something we'll still talk about here.
But Al on the south side wants the weigh Al,
good morning, he.
Speaker 6 (01:40:10):
Was going on up.
Speaker 11 (01:40:12):
This is what I'm gonna say about this here.
Speaker 17 (01:40:14):
Everybody you know they was and these big networks and
all that was talking about Jacksonville and hell see and
all that cold headed best. We already know the history
of Trevor Lawrence. The big, big time playoffs. The game
changes make their money in the playoffs, and in Houston,
(01:40:36):
Texans fans have to understand you have a quarterback that
have exceeded in proving in the playoffs. Young as he was,
he was able to win two playoff games. He got
that under his bill. His play went up in the playoffs.
Like you said, he don't really make a ton of mistakes.
(01:40:57):
The thing of it is, we got to keep them
faith in our team because guess what, we gonna win
the ugly game. See that's the that's the two time
thing that the Bisburgh steel has got against them.
Speaker 11 (01:41:11):
We win the game.
Speaker 17 (01:41:12):
So if the game ugly, we win them kind of
games because we've done it over and over again. I
just think, man, you know we're gonna win this and
go up to New England, and we already know what
that's gonna be. AFC Championship.
Speaker 6 (01:41:25):
Go Catches.
Speaker 2 (01:41:26):
I appreciate the call out, and I mean that is
the thing too, is I mean it sets up the
road ahead if you do get past tonight which again,
I mean, look, this isn't me counting chickens before they hatch.
You've got to go out there, you got to play
the game. I just know that, without a shadow of
a doubt, we're going to be coming in here tomorrow
night if indeed the Texan season is over and saying
(01:41:46):
this is why they're not moving on to night tomorrow morning. Yeah,
I know I'm trying to have us I guess work twice,
but tomorrow morning, you can.
Speaker 3 (01:41:57):
You get my point.
Speaker 2 (01:41:58):
But I mean, so what we're going to be saying
is we're going to be saying it's what the Texans
didn't do or they did to themselves. That's what we're
going to be saying after this because there is no
planet where the Texans should lose this game tonight. You're
the much better team. Now, I mean, does the much
better team always win? No, But at least in this case,
unless I think you just completely just blow it on
(01:42:20):
your end, there is no reason that Texans lose.
Speaker 4 (01:42:23):
You're losing because of you cost yourself the game. There
is no other way to put it. You are incompetent
on offense. The play calling is miskewed. You're allowing the
explosive plays. You're not making open field tackles, you're having
the moral palities, You're allowing Pittsburgh to win the time possession,
You're missing on special teams. That's the reason you lose
tonight the Jacksonville Jaguars. And I will say something nice
(01:42:47):
because everyone likes to think that I'm so negative about
jee Treyvor Lawrence Company.
Speaker 3 (01:42:50):
Jacksonville is a better team than Buffalo.
Speaker 4 (01:42:52):
Jacksonville truly is this season a better team than the
Buffalo Bills. And there was a reason why many people
at the national level said jacksonvill would win football game
because that they were playing better.
Speaker 3 (01:43:03):
But it comes down to the critical errors.
Speaker 4 (01:43:06):
You let Brandon Cooks get wide open across the middle
of the field for a thirty eight yard game. You
couldn't stop Josh Allen on fourth down. To go get
the stop, you through two bad interceptions, including a backbreaker
with less than a minute on the clock, But you
controlled that game. The Texans can do the exact same
(01:43:28):
thing today. They can control the tempo, they can win
the time possession, They can be better on third down.
They can put themselves and execute inside the red zone.
They can guarantee that they're walking away with positive points
because of Kayimi Fanbar and Drill's a field goal, or
you force a strip sack on Aaron Rodgers. But if
you have the critical moments, the backbuster plays the moments
that give opportunities for Pittsburgh to steal this shot the
(01:43:50):
spotlight and get right back into the winners column, that's
on you. That's not on Pittsburgh fighting a way to
guarantee you win. Jacksonville lost that game almost as much
as Buffalo won that game.
Speaker 2 (01:44:01):
All right, it's the same thing. So you do win
the night and you move on to the next week
against New England. I mean, you know, just seeing what
the Patriots did last night. They sack Justin Herbert six times,
two hundred and seventy yards a total offense allowed in
that game. Good enough team, but top to bottom, even
though they're the number two team, you still have to
factor in who did you play and who did you
(01:44:21):
do it against. The Texans played a first place schedule.
A team played a fourth place schedule. Yeah, so testing
is a huge part of all of this. And I
think the other part too is your playoff experience. Your
core guys on this team have plenty of playoff experience.
Speaker 3 (01:44:37):
That team nice performance last night. They have not had
that excepit.
Speaker 4 (01:44:41):
But what I've been telling you for a while that
the playoff experience is going to matter to these AFC playoffs.
Speaker 2 (01:44:46):
And the Texans right now at least well them in Buffalo.
I mean, Buffalo might be a shade more experience than
they are, at least the quarterback is. But I mean
three years of it. You can't say that that's not nothing.
But what did I tell you about two weeks ago?
Speaker 4 (01:45:00):
The AFC Championship Game would be held here in Houston
at Energy Stadium between the number five seed Houston Texans
and the number sixt seed Buffalo Bills. And the reason
behind that was not because of I think that they're
just the world class beaters, not because of I think
that they're so perfect in pristine that they're not going
to find a way to mess things up. It's because
of the experience they've been here before. They understand what
(01:45:22):
has cost them games. They understand what situations they've been
put into where they've made mental errorsm where it's put
them on the back end.
Speaker 3 (01:45:30):
Yeah, Denver has a good team. Yes, New England is
a solid team.
Speaker 4 (01:45:34):
Neither one of those rosters I feel confident in on
all three areas. I don't feel confident in Buffalo in
all three years. But you know what, I do feel
confident with Buffalo.
Speaker 3 (01:45:42):
They've been in.
Speaker 4 (01:45:43):
This situation before where they've had their backs against the
wall and how they can respond. You want to feel
confident in Houston because Houston, for two years in the
wildcard round were the underdogs. They weren't favored against Cleveland,
they weren't favored last year against Los Angeles.
Speaker 3 (01:45:58):
They beat both those teams by double digits. Now they
are a favorite.
Speaker 4 (01:46:02):
They've been able to play, you know, playing with house
money and collateral and saying, oh, we'll first figured out
they've been here before, and that's something that you can't
say about New England and the only way that you
could say it about Denver is yeah, we were here before.
But that was also because Kansas City saw all their
starters in the last game of the season, or Cincinnati
would have been here.
Speaker 2 (01:46:21):
And Denver also played against a third place schedule this
season two. So I mean, I think all that stuff matters.
And again, I mean when it comes down to individual matchups,
we like to do this with the quarterbacks, even as
good of a year as Drake May had, I'm still
taking c J.
Speaker 3 (01:46:36):
Stroud.
Speaker 4 (01:46:36):
I'm saying that CJ. Shroud experience is going to give
him a slight edge going into this.
Speaker 2 (01:46:40):
Of the potential final four teams that you could have
left in the AFC, I would take c J.
Speaker 3 (01:46:45):
Stroud over any of the other three.
Speaker 4 (01:46:47):
I take Josh Allen over all three.
Speaker 3 (01:46:49):
He is there, Okay, so I'll give you that I would.
It's it was.
Speaker 2 (01:46:54):
It was a willful omission, but still yes, okay, No
Number two would be c. So to the others, I
would over May and over Bonex.
Speaker 4 (01:47:04):
And if you go to the other side of the
of the bracket, I said that Los Angeles would be
facing off against who did I pick?
Speaker 3 (01:47:12):
Did I say San Francisco?
Speaker 4 (01:47:13):
I think I said San Francisco, La and San Francisco
would be facing off against each other in the AFC.
So why is that experience not just at the quarterback
but also rosters being in the postseason.
Speaker 2 (01:47:25):
I didn't know that Kyle Sheenahan's teams until they said
this yesterday on Fox that they've either made the playoffs
and he's gotten at least the ANTS Championship.
Speaker 3 (01:47:34):
Or they've missed the playoffs altogether every single year. And
it's been with incompetentive play.
Speaker 4 (01:47:38):
It's been with injuries, it's been with derailment, it's been
with you know, it's been with the fourth place schedule,
it's been the first play schedule.
Speaker 3 (01:47:44):
I'll give him credit. My bad, bro, my bad.
Speaker 4 (01:47:47):
I should have I shouldn't have given been so hard
harsh on you going in the off season.
Speaker 2 (01:47:51):
Maybe this has been a key for CJ. Stroud having
the success that he's had this season. What exactly it is,
we will tell you about it here as we close
out the eight o'clock Coward, don't forget to Sam Warren
from the Houston Chronicle gonna hop on with us here
in about fifteen minutes as we continue to get you
ready for tonight in Pittsburgh between the Texans and the Steelers.
Speaker 3 (01:48:09):
Right here on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (01:48:14):
Page down. The morning Drive continues. Now. Now here's Dan
in Cole.
Speaker 3 (01:48:22):
Gary in spring. What's the way and good morning Gary?
Speaker 12 (01:48:25):
Hey, good morning guys.
Speaker 3 (01:48:26):
Can you hear me all right loud and clear?
Speaker 12 (01:48:29):
Okay, because my phone's been acted up. Yeah, I just
have a couple of things say about the game tonight.
I got it. I grew really hileary and tired of
watching all the Expedit exhibition games over the weekend, the
of the wild Cards in the NFL game. So we'll
finally get a good game tonight. What's the point spread
on tonight's game? Heard lately?
Speaker 3 (01:48:52):
So it's back to three and a half?
Speaker 2 (01:48:53):
Okay, yeah, because it did kick up the Texans minus three,
but Cole sane, it's now three and a half and half.
Speaker 5 (01:49:00):
Okay.
Speaker 12 (01:49:01):
You know. The only thing I'm concerned about. I feel
the Texans should win if both team's playft to those
potential is. But the Texans, and y'all may have covered
this already, but the Texans have this tendency in the
middle of a game maybe or first part last, they
get discombobulated and they do stupid stuff.
Speaker 4 (01:49:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (01:49:23):
Yeah, they're not very disciplined. Like last game or the
game before last had an offensive guard with five yards
down the field on a twenty yard pass. Now what
the hell is that? And they just come up with
holding and blah blah bob it. But if they played
disciplined majority of the game, they should win this game.
So I'm looking forward to this really excited about it
(01:49:44):
and everything. And I believe I heard whoever wins this
game plays at five point thirty next Sunday. If I'm
not mistaken, I think they've already said that. But anyway,
do me a favor. Don't let the one guy call
in because I'm not going to say his name because
it's a and all he does is he's just so negative.
Speaker 3 (01:50:06):
You don't want you don't want Jay to call in?
You mean you mean say gotcha? May we got it?
We got it?
Speaker 7 (01:50:17):
Anyway.
Speaker 12 (01:50:18):
Anyway, guys, keep up the good work, love your show,
and go textan.
Speaker 2 (01:50:22):
All right, take care Gary, appreciate it, buddy. Yeah, the
rivalry continues. I just want them to meet in person,
just go duke it on out.
Speaker 1 (01:50:29):
Well.
Speaker 2 (01:50:29):
I mean, it's just, you know, I think it's it's
one of those though that like it starts this way
and then like you know, if if you do meet
in person, then it's kind of a okay, Hey, I
can kind of see your side. Yeah, you know what,
I can kind of see your side other side. You
don't seem like you're such a bad guy.
Speaker 3 (01:50:44):
I don't want them to see each other sides.
Speaker 4 (01:50:46):
I want them to go full on metal jacket mentality
with each other.
Speaker 2 (01:50:50):
I'm just saying, and you know, like, hey, maybe we
just you know, find an agreeable place.
Speaker 3 (01:50:54):
We we get some beers, and you know that way to.
Speaker 4 (01:50:56):
Such thing as being agreeable. Violence is the answer to
every thing, Dan Matthews, If there's one thing that I
will teach everybody in the society, bully the crap out
of people and then lead to violence.
Speaker 2 (01:51:06):
That is the key to being a champion, I would say,
probably you want to go the complete opposite direction of.
Speaker 3 (01:51:10):
The not at all.
Speaker 4 (01:51:11):
No, just bully the crap out of somebody until they
listen to your side. But I mean, I am gonna
be works for college football teams all the time, but I.
Speaker 3 (01:51:19):
Am gonna be honest though.
Speaker 2 (01:51:20):
I mean, it is one of those that like whenever
there's a feud, as long as I'm not involved in it,
then I'm just kind of like, you know what, Hey, hey,
don't don't ask me. I'm not involved, Guys, don't don't
involve me. Don't don't yank me into the ring here.
I don't need it.
Speaker 4 (01:51:33):
Just give in some popworl. Let me sit back, relax
and watch the show.
Speaker 2 (01:51:36):
There you go seven one three two one two, five, seven,
ninety is the number to get in real quick here
before we get to Sam Warren su CJ's enjoying himself.
He did not enjoy himself whatsoever last season. It seems like,
I mean when he was getting hit every single play
right said that last season he was not happy with
himself and that he was living a life away from God,
(01:51:59):
and this season has really kind of buckled down and
started to turn things around in his own personal life
and just also with the team. Talking about when they
started off Zho and three. Honestly, people probably didn't believe
in me, but I never thought we were going to
keep losing. We weren't getting blown out. We were losing
(01:52:20):
every game by one score. There were things we needed
to fix, of course, but I never really panicked when
we lost that third game.
Speaker 3 (01:52:28):
I thought we were going to win out. Well.
Speaker 2 (01:52:30):
At least they won nine of their next eleven, so
that worked out well.
Speaker 13 (01:52:35):
Well.
Speaker 4 (01:52:35):
Tell me, like, honestly, when you look back, where's the
lie and what he said?
Speaker 3 (01:52:41):
I don't think there's.
Speaker 4 (01:52:41):
Anything outside of the one game against the Seattle Seahawks,
which I will say right now, you can look at
the score. Whatever it is. They were not in that
game whatsoever, They just weren't. But they cost themselves a
win against the Los Angeles Rams week one by Dargan
Mulwally fumble and a bad David Allen touchdown. They cast
themselves a win in week two because of a failed
fourth down stop against Baker Mayfield. They cause themselves a
(01:53:03):
win in week three because of a Nico Collins fumble
because of two interceptions by CJ. And the big forty
six yard game where CJ. Garner Johnson wasn't covering Brian
Thomas Junior.
Speaker 3 (01:53:11):
And then in the.
Speaker 4 (01:53:12):
Denver game they lose because if they don't have their
quarterback for almost the entire game. So it's like the
games that they lost, which again all of them also
were within at least a one.
Speaker 3 (01:53:22):
It was a one possession game. You can feel confident.
Speaker 4 (01:53:26):
That if you switch a few things, they're actually sitting
with one loss on the season and they're the number
one seed.
Speaker 3 (01:53:33):
And he's not wrong.
Speaker 4 (01:53:35):
They were in every single game outside of the Seattle game.
Speaker 3 (01:53:38):
As long as you have that, you stand a shop.
We talked to this and much more too.
Speaker 2 (01:53:42):
As we'll catch up with Sam Warren again Houston Chronicle.

Speaker 1 (01:54:34):
This is the Morning Drive with Dad and Cole.
Speaker 2 (01:54:43):
As the winner of this will go to New England
to face the Patriots. Rockets lose last night one eleven
ninety eight Indiana meeting Miami in the College Football Playoff
National Championship team. They were able to punch their ticket
Friday night to get there. Seven one, two, two five,
seven ninety is the way to get in. But right now,
let's head to the hot line. Let's catch up with
(01:55:05):
Sam Warren, Houston Chronicle, jumping on with us here for
a few minutes. Sam, appreciate your time this morning. I'm
gonna go ahead and let you predict the future. Sam
can see the future and the headline for this game tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (01:55:18):
What do you think it's going to read? Win or
lose for the Texans?
Speaker 20 (01:55:23):
Thanks guys for having me on headline for tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (01:55:27):
I think, you know, win or lose.
Speaker 20 (01:55:29):
I think this defense is going to be able to
handle this Steelers offense. I know Aaron Rodgers has had
some success against against this team in the past, but
I just don't really see You know, they're getting DK
Metcat back, but I don't really see this the Steelers
offense having the firepower to compete with what we've seen
from this Texans defense kind of this entire season.
Speaker 3 (01:55:52):
Sam, when you look right now at CJ.
Speaker 4 (01:55:54):
Stroud and really just the offense in general, the line
has a lot of stack. In three games, they're playing
with a little bit more of a consistency in the
first half of matchups. Do you think that that's gonna
be the game plan for Houston and I to be
able to jump up to, say, ten to nothing lead
and kind of feel confident that their defense can play
just good enough to keep this at arms reach where
it doesn't feel like this is the moment where Pittsburgh's
(01:56:15):
gonna turn the corner.
Speaker 5 (01:56:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 20 (01:56:18):
Absolutely, I think this game is gonna be kind of
won or lost by the Texans offense and what they're
able to do. I think, you know, as I just said,
like this defense, I think it's gonna be able to
handle Pittsburgh. But you know when when this offense, when
this offense isn't really able to produce much like, that's
when Texans kind of gets stuck in these uh in
(01:56:39):
these close games. So whatever whatever seed they can do,
they've been playing well uh kind of recently here. You know,
the line hasn't caved in. They've given him time to
be able to go out and do what he wants
to do, so keeping him upright, keeping the offense moving,
keeping them ball in the air, and and have have
(01:57:00):
having some success downfield. It's definitely a big key for
this Texans team if they want to get out to
a win again.
Speaker 2 (01:57:05):
Sam Warren from the Houston Chronicle hopping on with us.
You can find him on Twitter at Sam Warren Underscore
three and me and you are pretty much, you know, locksed.
Speaker 3 (01:57:15):
Up in terms of how we see this.
Speaker 2 (01:57:16):
You know, with the Texans defense going up against this
Steelers offense tonight, who do you think is going to
be the key for the Texans defense to be able
to do what we expect that they can do against
this Pittsburgh offense.
Speaker 20 (01:57:31):
Yeah, So interestingly enough for me, I think it's Kamari Laster,
you know, coming back in this game or coming back
after not playing against the Colts kind of for a
twofold reason. You know, we saw against the Colts. We've
seen in previous weeks that that teams have been able
to maybe hit some big shots on this Texans defense,
(01:57:51):
especially last week when you know Kamari Kamari's backups we're in.
They give us some big plays at downfield to Alec
Pearson a couple other guys. So ensuring that Kamari's healthy
and those those backups don't have to come in, don't
have to spell him at all, that will be super
big for this Texans Texans defense just so you know
(01:58:12):
they're not making plays downfield the DK Metcalf or anything
like that. But also the way that the pactor, I mean,
the Steelers kind of use their running backs in the
past game and trying to get the ball out in
the flat with Jalen Warren and Ken's Gamewell the perimeter,
tackling the physicality that Kamari Laughter brings to this game
(01:58:33):
from the corner position, like, he's gonna be really key
in stopping those running backs. So having him back will
be a big thing for this Texas defense, and he's
going to be a very important player just with the
way that the Steelers kind of want to run their
offense to get the ball out.
Speaker 4 (01:58:47):
Sam, if I were to tell you that Jalen Petrie
is the most important player in this game, your reaction
would be.
Speaker 20 (01:58:53):
What, I wouldn't be surprised at all. I wouldn't be
surprised to see Beatrie, you know, make some of those
highlight reel hits, have a have a turnover, turnover, have
a forced fumble, have a have an interception, something like that.
So you know, he's he's really been an X factor
for this defense this year. And you know, remembering last
(01:59:14):
year he wasn't available for this team, and especially in
that Chiefs game when they lost, he was definitely definitely
missed very much. So having him back in the playoffs
this year, it could be huge for the Texans defense,
and yeah, I could definitely see him, you know, being
the most important player for this group.
Speaker 2 (01:59:31):
Against Sam Warren Houston Chronicle hopping on with us for
a few minutes on the morning draw with Dan and
Coles Sports talks seven to ninety. With this Steelers offense,
I mean, we saw the last couple of games of
the regular season, no DK metcalf.
Speaker 3 (01:59:44):
It's gonna be his first game back.
Speaker 2 (01:59:45):
How much of a difference is he going to make,
even with Kamari Laster being on the field, in this
Texan secondary win there being what they can be.
Speaker 20 (01:59:55):
Yeah, I think he makes a big difference to that team.
I mean they, you know, watching that that VENs Steelers game,
like they weren't really able to get much going on downfield.
Aaron Rodgers didn't really have all that many people to
throw to. So having DK back, he's definitely their top receiver.
He's the guy that they want the ball going to
on you know, as much as they can. So he's
(02:00:16):
definitely gonna be somebody you know, that the Texans will
have to stop. I had kind of confidence that they
will be able to stop them between Derrick Stingley and
tomorrow last but He definitely gives an aspect to the
Steelers offense that you know, without him on the field,
kind of in that Ravens game like they were they
were definitely missing him until the end when when Calvin
(02:00:37):
Austin was able to make a big play. So he's
he's definitely gonna be a difference BAK for the Steelers offense.
Speaker 4 (02:00:43):
There's there's always a double entendre when it comes to
what happens in football games, and usually it's either a
team finds a way to pull itself together and have
a miraculous comeback of all comebacks, or the team that's
really good and is supposed to be a dominant force
and is viewed as a favorite ends up having too
(02:01:03):
many self inflicted wounds in this game and that ultimately
leads to a loss. In your opinion, which is the
more likely outcome for Houston, That Pittsburgh finds a way
to be able to put together an incredible second half,
or that the self inflicting wounds, the bad play designs,
the miscommunication on the back end of the secondary miss
fueld goal attempts that ultimately sours and lets Houston go
(02:01:25):
out as a wild card team.
Speaker 20 (02:01:27):
Yeah, I think it's definitely the latter. We've seen at times,
you know, early on in this season, we've seen a
lot of times where the penalties and the mistakes and
the turnovers would affect the Texans, and you know, if
that happens, I think I think they can possibly lose.
But I think that's definitely the way that I would
see them, you know, falling to the Steelers. I see
(02:01:49):
them beating themselves. I don't think, you know, Aaron Rodgers
still has you know, the ability to make some plays.
He's definitely, you know, the most betteran quarterback in these offs,
and he you know, has been there before and it
can make some plays and can come up in big times.
But I don't I just don't see the Steelers having
(02:02:10):
the talent the players to compete and keep this, you know,
super close with the Texans. So I see them kind
of and the Texans having to beat themselves if they're
gonna end up falling in the wildcard round.
Speaker 2 (02:02:22):
Sam, Yeah, a chance to catch up with Daniel Hunter.
And as you pointed out in your story, he just
got a lot of experience going up against Aaron Rodgers,
just you know, the past success he's had against him,
but also too, how much of a help has he
been to the rest of the guys who don't have
as much experience going up against this quarterback.
Speaker 20 (02:02:43):
Yeah, I think he's been a big help to a
lot of these guys. You know, the Texans did play
Rogers last year, so they have, you know, of this
younger group, they do have some experience going against him
and what he tries to do. But I think it
was Matt Burke who was saying, you know, he's been
a huge heal up in terms of the stuff that
Rogers does pre staff, with his hard counts, with kind
(02:03:05):
of his checks and all the things that he's doing
at the line of scrimmags. So I think Danil has
been a big factor in what they're able to, you know,
use and practice and figure out some of those things
that you know Rogers does so well and is so
different from what the prototypical quarterback does at the line
of scrimm.
Speaker 4 (02:03:24):
Mas say, let me ask you, there's been a conversation
that's gone on for months now about the overall status
of Nick Kyley long term, and then it doesn't get
any easier when you have a guy that wears glasses
and a relationship with Miko Ryans and his called babing
on the sidelines is now fired and looking for a
new opportunity. And much like we have with this conversation
last year, Chip Kelly or Bust, Chip Kelly or Bust,
(02:03:46):
is there any scenario to where Nick Kaylee is not
back with the Texans in twenty twenty six.
Speaker 20 (02:03:53):
I really don't feel that way. I think they've been
very pleased with the way that Kaylee is own over
this season. Obviously, you know, if there's a complete collapse
in the playoffs, like maybe we're having a different conversation.
But I think you know from all reports that we've
gotten back, whether it's from Tabiko Ryots, whether it's from
c J. Stroud, they're really pleased with, you know, how
(02:04:16):
Kayley has grown as a play caller, how he's grown
with his play designs over the season, how he's been
taking kind of player and coke feedback and implementing that
into his game plans. I'm kind of really tailoring it
to what the strength of his players are during.
Speaker 17 (02:04:31):
Some c J.
Speaker 20 (02:04:32):
Stroud, So I think they're really pleased with kind of
his process that's gone gone out through those eighteen regular
season weeks, and I think they're they're pretty confident with
him going into the playoffs, So I don't really see
a scenario where you know, that's you know, a Bobby's
flow of situation where they make it, you know, win
a playoff game and just things don't you know, pan
(02:04:55):
out and uh and where they're looking for another another
offensive coordinator in the offseason. But obviously McDaniel is a
is I think who you were hinting at, and I
think he's an attractive candidate both for head coaching and
offensive coordinated positions. But I think the Texans are pretty
set with who they've got.
Speaker 2 (02:05:13):
Again, he's Sam Warren Houston Chronicle. You can find his work,
including that Daniel Hunter story that we talked about here
just a couple of questions ago, right there at Houston
Chronicle dot com. And he's also got one of the
best mustaches in the game. Sam, you're the best man.
I appreciate the time as always, and hopefully we're catching
up with you again here in the coming weeks because
that means that Texans are still playing football.
Speaker 5 (02:05:34):
Yep.
Speaker 20 (02:05:35):
Awesome, guys, thanks so much for having me on all.
Speaker 2 (02:05:37):
Right, there you go again, Saam Warre and Houston Chronicle
hopping on greatlipchack, I fantastic hold on.
Speaker 3 (02:05:43):
Okay, what did you call it a lipjacket? The hell
you never heard of mustache? That is the first time
I've ever heard it called that moment, Well, there you go.
You're welcome you.
Speaker 4 (02:05:56):
I completely lost my train of thought. I love the
fact that you were able to do. That's the first
time that I've actually sat here and not being able
to come up with something in return.
Speaker 3 (02:06:04):
I've never heard that before. Well, that's one of the
ones that I guess I can go to here every
once in a while. I mean, you gotta switch you vot.
Speaker 2 (02:06:11):
You gotta switch up your pitches every once in a while,
you know, But when you were able to have multiple
pickoff throws over to first base, you kind of had
to give a different look every once in a whith.
Speaker 4 (02:06:20):
I just just provo to you, because usually I could
come back for something.
Speaker 3 (02:06:24):
I have no response to that one.
Speaker 4 (02:06:27):
Honestly, I am very I am very proud of you
because I have never been stumped by something that you
said before.
Speaker 3 (02:06:33):
That one got me Sam those ball too.
Speaker 4 (02:06:35):
I have no idea what I completely forgot what I
was about to say, because the only thing I'm focusing
on is what you call it again.
Speaker 2 (02:06:42):
Flip jacket? Oh my, and you can tell it's not
for ust either. I mean, trust me, I've had that
one for a long time.
Speaker 3 (02:06:49):
What the hell? Yeah, I just think about it. Where's
the mustache?
Speaker 4 (02:06:52):
See jacket? Have you ever heard of called a lipjacked
by before? I would love somebody on the line. Please
just tell me that I'm not alone.
Speaker 3 (02:07:02):
With this is the fun.
Speaker 2 (02:07:02):
Maybe maybe Anthony is one of those people and we
can try to find out. But you want to join
them again? Seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
A huge shout out to to say, I really appreciate it.
By the way, former teammate at Syracuse with one Juwar Jordan,
so at least already some rapport there already before covering
him with the team.
Speaker 3 (02:07:22):
But no, he's Aces. I really appreciate him.
Speaker 2 (02:07:25):
Uh, you can be aces too if you want to
hop a board again someone three two one two five
seven ninety continue the Texans conversation. Do that also to
we've been uh a little bit of I've gotten on
this guy before, but I gotta say, little by little
he's turned me and we'll have that before we close
up shop here on a Monday. It is the Morning
Drive with Dan and Cole Sports Talk seven ninety Dan.
Speaker 9 (02:07:48):
Matthews, Cole Thompson. This is the Morning Drive with.
Speaker 1 (02:07:54):
Dan and Cole.
Speaker 2 (02:07:56):
Seveone three, two, one two five seven ninety is the
way to get And the lipjacket comment is getting mixed
reviews from people out there, and I know that at
least one of our callers here wants to weigh in
on that, but we also too want to keep it.
A lot of Texans Steelers tonight, so Anthony wants to
wait in here.
Speaker 3 (02:08:15):
Good morning, Anthony, Hey, good morning.
Speaker 8 (02:08:17):
So let's hey, So you guys were talking about who
y'all think the X factor will be for the Texans defense,
and so DK Metcalf's coming back today and his average
yards per receptions around fourteen with his jack being around seven,
which tells me that they like to get him the
(02:08:39):
ball and a lot of quick hitting routes, and the
Texans like the shadow shadow Derek Stingley with the team's
number one wide receiver. So all that being said, I
think that obviously Derek Stingley Junior is one of, if
not the best Island corner in all the football and
so I think that he will be the X factor
(02:09:01):
today and I think that just has the ability for
it to be a career defining game for him.
Speaker 2 (02:09:08):
Hey, I appreciate the call, Anthony. I mean, he's been
somebody that hasn't been tested a ton this year, but
when he has, it's worked out well. I mean, what
wouldn't it the Colts game, not a single target his direction,
the first one, second one, he had a touchdown score
over him.
Speaker 3 (02:09:25):
He had a touchdown in the alec Piers game.
Speaker 4 (02:09:27):
Here's the reason why I say Derek, here's the reason
I say Jaln peachrees the X factor. Defensively, Kenny Gainwell
is number two on the team in receptions and the targets.
That's a running back. Number three on the team is
Pat Fryermuth. That's tight end who more often than not
is covering the running backs. And the tight ends, the
slot defender, the nickel corner, the guy who is playing
(02:09:48):
near the line of scrimmage. They're going to try to
think and dunk their way to success tonight. You're going
to take away Dk Metcalf because if you have Derek
Stingley Junior, you have Caleb Block. You have potentially Reid,
who will find out later to this afternoon if he
is actually going to be elevated back to the active
roster or if he is not, so we'll figure that out.
Vous If not him, it's gonna be a combination of
(02:10:09):
either Cavon Wallace or Miles Bryan or somebody else out there.
But regardless that nickel defender spot is going to be
going up against the run, it's gonna be going up
against the pass. Is gonna be working in the flats,
and that's where Aaron Rodgers is going to try to
thrive him. You're going to see Jalen Petree have to
cover both Gainwell Friarmouth Jalen Warren, and he's gonna have
(02:10:32):
to play in the line of scrimmage to stop the run.
I think that making him the X factor of this
game because of how valuable he is to being able
to cover tight ends, to being able to get out
of the backfield and stop running backs, to be able
to play against the run and be really physical at
the line of scrimmage. That's going to eliminate a lot
of the place. It's going to force Aaron Rodgers to
have to be explosive downfield, which means at that point
(02:10:55):
they are going to have to try to get the
ball to DK Metcalf.
Speaker 3 (02:10:57):
Therefore, Derek Singley Junior can get.
Speaker 2 (02:10:58):
A pick well, I mean in a lot that too,
you would think comes from you know, off schedule plays,
But I mean that's the whole point of screen games.
Speaker 3 (02:11:05):
That's the whole point of wheel routes and everything like that.
Speaker 2 (02:11:08):
You want to catch teams off balance, and the way
you do that is by you know, players over pursuing
on a on a catch or even too, I mean
just giving up the gaps I mean, and being able
to you know, give up contain on that because you
don't have to worry about Rogers running. It really was
never really a part of his game. If he did,
(02:11:28):
it was more or less just he saw an opening
to the sidelines. You can get past the sticks, all right,
first down. But aside from that, it's more of just
the elusiveness of him, and he still got it a
little bit.
Speaker 3 (02:11:38):
He doesn't have it like he used to.
Speaker 4 (02:11:41):
True, But also I think that when you talk about
the weather, like somebody brought up, oh well, the weather
and the conditions are going to be so cold and
Fridgid to night Hues is not used to that stuff. Guys,
you do realize that that cold temperature is gonna make
Aaron Rodgers forty one year old body brintle. He could
snap in half by the middle of the third quarter
because of how many reps Will Anderson Junior Hunter are
winning at the line of scrimmage against this offensive line.
Speaker 2 (02:12:03):
Well, and it's also too, I mean, you already have
a cold weather win this year, and you went to
Kansas City and you handled business, and that was one
that the same deal was thrown at you.
Speaker 3 (02:12:10):
You have to a degree, is supposed to be a
kickoff tonight. It's like twenty three, isn't it.
Speaker 4 (02:12:14):
So I mean like that that to me, that was
basically what you were already facing off against an arrowhead.
Speaker 3 (02:12:18):
And I thought that at the time.
Speaker 4 (02:12:19):
You know, Pittsburgh, I mean, Kansaity was a better team
because they had Patrick Mahomes out there. They still were
playing for something. They were trying to go ahead and
get back in the division title race.
Speaker 3 (02:12:27):
Pittsburgh. To me, again, I understand it. Anything is possible.
Speaker 4 (02:12:31):
Things could absolutely happen in one way or another, but
it's not going to be that way for the Texans.
It just isn't. They're too good of a defense, they're
too good of a special team unit. They're two good
on third down conversions, they're two good on red zone
efficiencies to where you know you don't need much of
the offense just getting the.
Speaker 3 (02:12:46):
Field goal range.
Speaker 4 (02:12:47):
Let Kayimi draina three and call it a day, Like
that's really should be the only game plan at this point.
Speaker 2 (02:12:53):
So tonight's at kick, it's going to be eight o'clock,
So thirty two at at sick that's nothing.
Speaker 3 (02:13:00):
That's like, that's like brisk weather.
Speaker 2 (02:13:01):
So it's gonna be in in the in the thirties.
So that's that's what you have.
Speaker 3 (02:13:06):
Change weather. Yeah, it'll be fine.
Speaker 2 (02:13:08):
Someone three two, one, two, five seven ninety is the
number to get in. Jonathan wants to weigh in. Good morning, Johnson, Hey,
good morning guys.
Speaker 7 (02:13:16):
I don't want to derail the Texas talk, but uh,
going back to the lip jacket, I had to bring
up the old the old cook, the old cookie duster.
So you give heard of that one out I listen
to you guys.
Speaker 4 (02:13:26):
Hold up, hold up, Jonathan, what that what was that?
That's that's one too. That's another one.
Speaker 3 (02:13:33):
How many how many nicknames are there for upper hair? Lip?
That's a new one.
Speaker 7 (02:13:37):
That's a job for Google.
Speaker 3 (02:13:40):
Oh my god, yeah, I mean we could, we could
look him up, appreciate John.
Speaker 1 (02:13:44):
I don't want to.
Speaker 3 (02:13:45):
I mean, don't get me wrong.
Speaker 4 (02:13:46):
That one's actually kind of funny than that lip jacket. Yeah,
lip jacket cookie Okay, cookie usk the first time I've
ever heard that one, because there's so many reasons why
it's funny.
Speaker 2 (02:13:55):
And I'm, like I said on air, do you get
I mean, because you're one with facial hair. I I
I cannot grow facial hair. If for the life of me,
it's patchy, it's not good, it doesn't look good. But
do you do you have to worry about that of
like you know, oh yeah, hey there's lunch. Oh, there's
there's breakfast. There's still you know.
Speaker 3 (02:14:12):
I clean my I clean my upper jo my upper
hair like a brush for it. No, no, I just
every single time. I don't have like a little small comb.
It doesn't grow that much.
Speaker 8 (02:14:21):
Man.
Speaker 4 (02:14:21):
I get people making fun of my facial hair all
the time because if I don't have facial hair, I
look like I'm twelve. But if I do have facial hair,
I at least look somewhat my age.
Speaker 2 (02:14:29):
You're almost like, well, this is gonna be a dated
reference and you're probably not gonna get it, and probably
most of our audience wouldn't either. That's why Emilio Estevez
in the movie Another Steak Out, That's why that's why
he grows a mustaches.
Speaker 3 (02:14:41):
He's like, he's like, I've.
Speaker 4 (02:14:42):
Got to look older, man, I have I kid you not,
I look like I am still in high school if
I don't have facial hair. That's the only reason why
I grow out the hair. It is also, though too
fun of me because it.
Speaker 2 (02:14:52):
Doesn't get you become accustomed to it too, Because I
mean I worked with a guy at my previous stop
that he had had a beard all all throughout, and
one day he showed up and it was during the summertime,
so he had the rest of his face was somewhat tan,
and then where he had shaved his beard, it was
just white all the way through.
Speaker 3 (02:15:11):
What do you mean white?
Speaker 2 (02:15:12):
Because he was not able to get sun to his face,
so because of it, he didn't get sun. Therefore the
beard became white, well, like the underneath the beard, like skin,
the under chain.
Speaker 3 (02:15:23):
Yeah, so I mean, he had tan from like his eyes,
like to his nose.
Speaker 4 (02:15:26):
He shaved and that at that point it became like
a basically it was like a farmercy. Yeah yeah, okay,
and then as soon as he saw us, he goes,
he goes, I know, I know. See the problem is that,
like he said, he had messed up. So that's why
he was like, well, I can't have my beard looking
like this, So now I just have to go all
the way down to the skins. You already have people
call me a muppet because the way my voice sounds,
(02:15:47):
I don't even call me a prepuge best in teenager.
Speaker 3 (02:15:49):
So that's where I had the beard.
Speaker 4 (02:15:51):
But like, the problem I hate about it is it
doesn't connect like it won't connect to the top or
won't grow on the side. So I got to just
grow it out this way and it doesn't grow down,
It just grows out.
Speaker 2 (02:16:00):
Which muppet would cole be seven one three one two
one two five seven ninety No, of course I would
probably go animal.
Speaker 4 (02:16:09):
That's the answer I say. I don't even have to
go we don't even have to go into full detail.
Speaker 2 (02:16:12):
I've been told this, okay, so scratch what I just
threw out there, but still you can jump on with
us at seven one three, two, one two five seven
ninety how the Mighty have fallen and don't look like
they're going to get up and somebody else has risen.
We will discuss exactly what that means here as we
continue here. It is the nine o'clock hour on the
Morning Drive with Danny Cole Sports Talk seven ninety. You know,
(02:16:34):
I've been talking with y'all a lot about a lot
of my great sponsors here and a huge fan of Synergenics,
who I talked to you about earlier. For obvious reasons.
They are helping me take my health back in my life.
Another one two that is doing that exact thing is
helping me understand my financial health. And that's where Trajan
Wealth comes in. Trajanwealth dot Com. Trajanwealth dot com three
(02:16:56):
four six three seven one thirty three thirty three four
six three seven one thirty three. Already, when you connect
with them, you connect with great people like my guy
Peter at the Woodland's office, or like Chris out of
the Sugarland and Katie offices. You got the Champion's office
too as well. If you're like me, which is a
complete Novice. When it comes to your finances, well, then
that's reason enough today to get in touch with Trading
(02:17:18):

(02:17:38):
you can feel good about what your financial future could
look like again three four six three seven to one
thirty three thirty three four six three seven one thirty
three thirty Trajanwealth dot Com, Tradanwealth dot com. And if
you can't tell, Trading Wealth means a lot to me,
Synergenics means a lot to me. Kobe Stevens means a
lot to me as well. And if you want to
join those great groups with us right here on the
(02:17:58):
Morning Drive, please please email me Dan Matthews oneta In
Matthews at iHeartMedia dot com. That's Dan Matthews at iHeartMedia
dot com to join up with Trajan Wealth, Synergenics, and
also Kobe Stevens and many of the other great partners
that we have here at Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 3 (02:18:15):
But Trajan Wealth.
Speaker 2 (02:18:16):
Advisory services through Trajan Wealth LLC, SEC Registered Investment Advisor,
client paid advertisement. Additional disclosures can be found at Trajanwealth
dot com. And don't forget when you head on over
tell them. Dan Matthews from Sports Talk seven ninety sent
you on over.
Speaker 4 (02:18:32):
For five.
Speaker 3 (02:18:34):
Hey, it's Craig Vigia.
Speaker 4 (02:18:35):
Listen to the Home of the Astros in your home.
Speaker 3 (02:18:37):
Just tell your smart speaker.
Speaker 4 (02:18:38):
Play Sports Talk seven ninety on iHeartRadio.
Speaker 3 (02:18:43):
I mean listen.
Speaker 4 (02:18:44):
Not only did he miss on so many different elements,
he said the Blayton Navius stuff up up close and
in person.
Speaker 3 (02:18:51):
That was the most annoying part.
Speaker 4 (02:18:52):
Oh, if they win this game, they have a shot
at going to the Super Bowl. Yeah, Tony, no kidding,
They're still for another week.
Speaker 2 (02:19:01):
Do you almost get a sense at times that, like nance,
you can almost hear the eye roll from him, Like
I almost kind of feel like every once in a
while it's kind of like, oh, I think Jim's annoyed,
Like it kind of has that feeling like what happened
to him? Seriously, when he first came on, like it
(02:19:21):
was everybody was like, oh my god, he's really good
at this. I mean, he's diagnosing plays, he can see,
you know exactly, you know, knowing what defenses are going
to do, knowing how offenses could attack them. And then
it's like almost kind of like overnight that it was
all right, Hey, I don't need to be that guy anymore.
Speaker 3 (02:19:38):
Now I can just try to be you know me.
Speaker 2 (02:19:42):
Because here's the problem with people that think they're funny
is they'll tell you that they're funny, but they're really not.
And it's also too that they're nice enough where nobody
really wants to like say to him, like, dude, you're
not funny, because you know, you don't want to rob
him with their joy.
Speaker 3 (02:19:55):
All right, fine, I get.
Speaker 2 (02:19:56):
It, but it's just it's like just the noises that
he makes, and it's just just the general like overall
annoyance of the broadcast, and I'm just like, you know what,
I'm getting to the point now where I really want
to listen to this on mute.
Speaker 11 (02:20:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:20:11):
I mean there's always times that there's people that we
know that we think that people they think of they're funny,
and we just don't listen to them and we just
kind of let them go about their business. Then we
just cost smile and go, Okay, that's cool.
Speaker 2 (02:20:20):
Here's the complete opposite of it too, because Awful Announcing
had this and we'll get to, you know, the opposite end.
But Tony Romo's shaky wildcard performance opens door for Iron
Eagle and JJ Watt in CBS's top booth. It's going
it's going to trend that direction because JJ, just like
Tom Brady, both highly lauded this year for their work.
(02:20:42):
I mean, this is Watt's first year in the booth,
and it seemed like everybody across the board, even you know,
I heard somebody mentioning it to Iron Eagle as he
was getting on the elevator as I was getting off
of it in the press box, and he was like, yeah,
he's done a heck of a job this year, and
what has been amazing. Tom Brady was not well thought
of last year. People thought that he was almost kind
(02:21:03):
of mailing it in, and in this season you come
out of.
Speaker 3 (02:21:05):
Games and you're like, you know what, Brady was actually
really good.
Speaker 2 (02:21:09):
Like yesterday his example with you know how to throw
the football in the wind?
Speaker 3 (02:21:13):
I was like, wow, I didn't know that. Thanks for
sharing that.
Speaker 4 (02:21:16):
The problem is is that you gotta get rid of
Jim Nantz too, because you can't have Iron Eagle just go,
or you can't just have JJ go and not Jim Nantz.
Speaker 3 (02:21:25):
Jim will leave when he wants to leave, right.
Speaker 4 (02:21:28):
So, but what you're saying is that part of the
reason why it works so well for JJ is he's
paired with the pro and arguably the best in the
industry in I in Eagle. The reason why it works
so well is because if you have a complimentary piece
that allows you to be the best version of yourself.
I don't know JJ would work with Jim Nance very well.
I know it works for Iron Eagle very well. So
(02:21:48):
until Jim is you're willing to step on down, Tony's
not gone anywhere, you can.
Speaker 3 (02:21:53):
Go ahead and bring bring it up however you want,
like I really did.
Speaker 4 (02:21:56):
And I will say this, the reason why I love
Greg Olsen and so much on the broadcast call is
because it's very clear he can work with anybody, and
it's been well documented that I thought he got a
crap deal when they moved him off of the Kevin
Burkhart crew to work with Joe Davis. But he's got
he's mastered that he's gotten into a really good report
with Joe Davis. So now that, in my opinion, is
arguably the third best broadcasting career in the industry behind
(02:22:18):
what we've seen so far and I and he going
to JJ right now maybe number one. But the partner
in the relationship aspect of all things is such a
major deal for you to have a good communicated process
and you got a good thing going with Iron and JJ.
Speaker 3 (02:22:31):
It sucks for Jim that he's suck with Tony.
Speaker 4 (02:22:33):
It's absolutely dreadful that you're wasting away talent because if
you got a guy who at this point has lost
all momentum, has nothing else to really say, tries to
be funny when he's not, but you're just along for
the ride.
Speaker 3 (02:22:48):
However, they're not going to separate the two.
Speaker 4 (02:22:50):
They're not gonna say, oh, I and now you're working
alongside with Tony and JJ, you're going up to the
main crew.
Speaker 2 (02:22:55):
You're just not well and is also too the way
that he started the broadcast today is going to be
very telling, though because Jacksonville is a complete football team.
Carolina did that yesterday. They earned the respect almost one,
but they didn't. Jacksonville is in the same situation.
Speaker 3 (02:23:11):
They could do it.
Speaker 2 (02:23:13):
This could be a major upset, even though it's really
not an upset because the Bills are actually the underdog.
Speaker 3 (02:23:19):
But they're the overdog. We'll see today.
Speaker 2 (02:23:22):
As Dave Portanoy shared that from barstool and said, Romo
off to a hot start. This could be a major
upset like Carolina yesterday, even when they were favored.
Speaker 4 (02:23:31):
Oh my god, did you really just read something from Portnoy?
Oh come on, man, come on, like like, I'm not
even trying to be like, Oh, media aspect of things,
Portnoy's a dud. Like every single one of his takes
is so out of left field, outlandishly stupid, moronic, it's
so bad.
Speaker 2 (02:23:50):
He's a promoter, that's what He's a hat that's what
he is. Oh, he's a promoter. He's he's basically a
boxing promoter.
Speaker 4 (02:23:58):
Yes, there's not a single take that he has had
in the last two months that I've ever once agreed with.
Speaker 5 (02:24:02):
Thought.
Speaker 3 (02:24:02):
Well, I mean that's the thing. If you're going to
him for your sports takes then you're doing. You just
went him for a sports stake.
Speaker 2 (02:24:08):
It's just I had an example for a sports stake.
It was right here, so I used it right.
Speaker 4 (02:24:12):
But the point is that why are you using it.
You should never be used important for anything. If you
want to use anybody, at least use Brandon Walker because
I can at least make fun of him for a
little while.
Speaker 3 (02:24:21):
I at least.
Speaker 4 (02:24:22):
Respect the fact that Brandon's gotten to a point of
where he is such a troll that everyone understands nobody
takes you seriously.
Speaker 3 (02:24:28):
People actually think.
Speaker 4 (02:24:29):
That day portally thinks that people take him seriously enough.
Speaker 2 (02:24:32):
Well, I mean, clearly they do, because his business works
and it continues to work. It works because if I'm
laughing at it, I'm making fun of it all the
time we're talking about it. Well, there's a lot of
people and clearly too, I mean, with it going mainstream
on FS one.
Speaker 4 (02:24:45):
Because if they're broken, they don't have any other content
that they want to throw out there and guess what
they know, Barstool WI give them a quick block.
Speaker 2 (02:24:50):
Well and then Netflix also too, throwing it out for
pardon my take, Are they still.
Speaker 3 (02:24:53):
Staying with barstore orre they just going to Netflix themselves.
Speaker 2 (02:24:56):
No, yeah, I mean it's just it's going to be
distributed on that right. But are they still under the barstool.
They're still into the barstol.
Speaker 4 (02:25:01):
Yeah, so so him and Ristillo they're just going to
Netflix and the siding on YouTube. The it's just it's
another distribution for gotcha. Okay, Yeah, that's all it is. So,
I mean everything is still under the umbrella. Yeah, Big
Cat's not going anywhere, trust me, that guy. He he
comes with the furniture over there at h If he left,
I promise you would be a lot better of content
that big If him and PFT left and did their
(02:25:21):
own thing and they created their own model landscape, they
would bring in all the same amount of recre all
the same amount of sponsors, all the same amount of
ad reads, all the same amount of accolades. They've got
to a point to where they're big enough they can
be by themselves. And honestly, Ryan Rousillo, if he ends
up getting back to the level of what he was at, yeah,
he could easily do it by himself. He creates his
own media modoule and he'll be fine. Well, he was
with with Bill Simmons, yeah, but that was still underneath
(02:25:44):
the ring of umbrella.
Speaker 2 (02:25:45):
I'm saying him create his own. He could sell the
idea of it. Bill Simmons in House, what do you
mean Bill Simmons, guy's name is House? What do you
mean one of his guys where he'll even say it?
You know, it doesn't impress me, doesn't impress Rosolo, doesn't
impress House.
Speaker 3 (02:25:59):
Who is this House person that you see? This guy
who's on his show? I don't know. I don't listen
to the show.
Speaker 1 (02:26:04):
Well, why do you bring it up?
Speaker 2 (02:26:05):
Because I don't listen to the show, Because I mean,
I just have heard him say his name before, and
I'm like, oh, he must be part of the show.
Speaker 4 (02:26:10):
I've never heard of House before outside of the guy
that was on the Fox television show played by Hugh.
Speaker 3 (02:26:14):
Laid Yeah, Hugh Laurie. Yeah, what a great show too,
that was. That was a fun one, Okay.
Speaker 4 (02:26:20):
He is the one character you know, like when there's
actual guys, like when you get into a really big
time role and that you're just locked in forever, like
that's who you're known for, like Matt LeBlanc Is Joey,
Like I'm never gonna se him anything.
Speaker 3 (02:26:29):
Else for sure, that's you, Lauri. For me, Michael Richards
is Creamer. Yeah, that's a good one.
Speaker 4 (02:26:35):
I mean, you know that Jason Alexander is Costanzo. See,
but I've seen him in other stuff enough to where
I can at least kind of see Julias Dreyfus.
Speaker 2 (02:26:42):
I mean, I know that she was Veep, but I
think he's better Viep than she was as a late
I mean, but she's a late.
Speaker 3 (02:26:47):
I think I think her more from the show. Hey,
Jerry is obviously Jerry. Yeah, but that's just him being
an iteration of himself.
Speaker 4 (02:26:53):
Kenny Banya, Hey, Jerry, like Ben Stiller's dad, Jerry Stiller
is better I think as Arthur than he is his
actual Chason than what said Frank Costanza. I think he's
way better as as Frank on a Camp Queens.
Speaker 3 (02:27:06):
He he was good on that show. He was he
had a little bit more versatility.
Speaker 2 (02:27:10):
But of course, I mean Frank Costanz is usually going
to be the go to moves that I think a
lot of people will have there. All Right, So I've
given this guy a hard time before, and I have
since recanted, and now they're canting even continues. We'll let
you hear exactly what I mean right here as we
continue on the morning drive with Dan and Coles Sports
Talk seven to ninety. But let's talk looking good and
(02:27:31):
feeling good on and off the golf course. Maybe even
too for some of that great fishing gear that they
have at Kobe Stevens Apparel. Well then you can have
that too. If you're heading out to the golf here
anytime soon, you want to start dropping a line. They're
in Galveston Bay, Well make sure you're doing it in
great fishing gear from Kobe Stevens Apparel, Kobe Stevens dot com,
(02:27:52):
Kobe Stevens dot com. I'm talking polos, I'm talking T shirts,
I'm talking hats, shorts, ladies and youth options. You got
those pants two as well. All of them are available
to you right now at Kobe Stevens dot com. And
don't forget too that brick and mortar store. It is
open and they are ready to serve you right there
sixty four oh two Loweta Road in Spring That's where
(02:28:14):
you can go out there and see everything that you
have online. It's right there at the storefront, and you've
got people who are helping you out and making sure
that you walk out the door looking and feeling better
than you did when you're headed in the door. So
right there again, you imagine it right there on the rack.
Then you put it on and you say, man, next
time I hit the course, I'm going low that day
just because of how good I look in this Kobe
(02:28:36):
Stevens apparel. Again, it's Kobe Stevens dot com, Coobystephens dot com,
Coby Stevens with a VS at the end. It's Kobe
Stevens dot Com, Kobe Stevens Apparel.
Speaker 1 (02:28:48):
Come back to Danny Cole as the Morning Drive Cruise
is on.
Speaker 2 (02:28:55):
I had gotten on Fernando Mendoza about you know, just man,
loosen up a little bit in the interviews, all right,
Like not everything's got to be like you know, perfect
tenor not. Everything's got to be rehearsed, all of that.
Like I even saw somebody on Twitter had thrown this
out and I was like, I gotta agree with that.
Seemed like sometimes in his post game you know, reaction
interviews and press conferences, that's that stuff was rehearsed. Now
(02:29:19):
it's to the point where I'm like, no, this is
this is who this guy is, and you know, and
I had said, what a great speech for the heisman.
It was tremendous, It was amazing, it was heartfelt, really
well delivered. It was amazing. But then you get this
the other night from their post game at the Peach Bowl,
where he starts to invoke some of the classics of
(02:29:39):
literature by talking about how it pertains to not only
him but also this Indiana team.
Speaker 21 (02:29:46):
Yeah, I would say, delayed gratification is a concept that
you know, was brought up by Bistoicism and by the Stoics,
and I think it's one of the greatest it's one
of the greatest attributes. If you have the layed gratification
discipline in yourself and discipline in your process and operation,
you're able to execute every single week, like you know,
this play or this game is the national champions team,
(02:30:06):
Like this game is the most important thing. And so
I think that a lot of players and a lot
of coaches and just everybody in Bloomington has done a
great job of, you know, upholding that concept of delayed
gratification and discipline throughout all aspects of our lives. When
there's a lot of distractions, and you know, especially with
the Big Ten Championship and you know, the Heisman and
all other things. I think our team has done a
great job of keeping that delayed gratification at the forefront.
Speaker 3 (02:30:27):
So invoking the Stoics.
Speaker 2 (02:30:30):
This is a guy too, who, when asked last week
about social media, says, I have two bits of social media.
Speaker 3 (02:30:36):
I have LinkedIn and I have YouTube.
Speaker 4 (02:30:37):
Yeah, he actually put his LinkedIn on his LinkedIn profile.
I won the husband Trophy. He literally put in this
past week. I just saw it online. Winners of the
of the Peach Bowl.
Speaker 3 (02:30:47):
I kid you not. He has literally done this.
Speaker 4 (02:30:49):
Entire year, all American winners of this game. He's a
trophy winner, David. It's all on LinkedIn. It's fantastic.
Speaker 3 (02:30:55):
I like this kid, I really do.
Speaker 2 (02:30:58):
He was never about disliking him, but I mean it's
just he's uniquely himself and it's kind of refreshing. I mean, look,
you know, for all of the you know players that
we look at and say, oh, man, too much self gratification,
he goes the complete opposite way.
Speaker 4 (02:31:13):
I'll tell you, I'm very happy that he's going to
be a Las Vegas Raider and not a New York
check as that city would eat him alive.
Speaker 3 (02:31:19):
Are you kidding me? Please please, Dan, please please explain
to me.
Speaker 4 (02:31:22):
How after a twenty seven point loss with the New
York Chats that he comes into the locker room and
says anything like that that anybody in the media is
going to take him seriously.
Speaker 3 (02:31:30):
See, And that's just said.
Speaker 2 (02:31:30):
I mean, this is where you get into Russell Wilson territory,
because when when Russ was winning and when Russ was good,
the corniness was at least it was at least tolerated
because when you know, you are perceived to be corny
by people, and of course you know it works with
coaches too, all the raw raw all of the QC sayings,
(02:31:51):
and you know there's this day, that day.
Speaker 3 (02:31:53):
The QC sayings.
Speaker 4 (02:31:54):
Dude, I'm just telling you straight up, nobody in New
York is going to take it like that. If you're
losing football games. They don't care if you are winning
by twenty points or not. You can't be corny in
that city. They'll eat you alive if you show that
type of mentality.
Speaker 3 (02:32:06):
Cornyingess works in Vegas. It works a lot better in Vegas.
That doesn't in New York. I'll tell you that much.
Speaker 4 (02:32:12):
That usually is the case they don't have a quarterback,
and they haven't had a quarterback in decades. They will
love him out in the sober in black simply because
of he is the most authentic version of himself. There'll
be somebody in New York that will say, guys an
ass hat and they will ruin his legacy because of it. Hey,
you don't want to see that happen. Well, faw score tonight.
Speaker 2 (02:32:28):
I'm going Texans twenty seven and the Steelers ten, twenty
three ten.
Speaker 3 (02:32:33):
There you go. That tends the number right there. All right,
He's Cole Thompson, Triple.
Speaker 2 (02:32:38):
Emmanuel Elmore, Dan Matthews, The Morning Drive with Dan and
Cole Sports Talk seven ninety. Stick and stay because you
