I got a little bit of the flag football games
this week. I was impressed, especially those girls from Austin team.

and I think better defensively than offensively. But they're young too,
so you know, being that it's a young sport, I
feel like that it's going to develop into something that

Texas will be proud of, but especially right here in Austin.

No doubt, we were with y'all last Friday kind of
recapping the conclusion of the SEC media days in Mark.
There was a lot that we got to, but a
lot that we didn't get to that we'll talk about
on today's show. Harge and Craig Way, the voice of

sat down with Trevor Gooseby, Who's going to be one

of those first round draft picks that Mark Hennery was
talking about on Friday during his World's Strongest Take. We're
going to play that later on in today's show. Some
stuff on Colin Simmons. Is there another leap for Colin
Simmons that he can make? We're going to discuss that.
I'm gonna get Mark's opinion on that as well. The
King has finally made his decision. He's going to Villa.

As Mark Henry called it a few weeks ago. Lebron
James is a seventy six. You're going to get some
marks thoughts on that. Has a title race been shook
up by Lebron's decision? Is there a new favor in
the Eastern Conference. We'll get to that as well. Chris

He was out there in Tampa with me, Harge and
Gregor the SEC Media Day is going to get his
scope on the landscape in college football and what he
thinks of the SEC preseason.

Pull and Mark, let's start there. So Friday after our show.

On Friday, they announced the preseason poll for the SEC.
No this was voted on by members attending the SEC
Media Days.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
They did the first team All SEC Second team.

Speaker 4 (04:05):
We'll get to that here in just a second, but
the preseason poll was released, Mark, and I don't think
there's a big surprise. But the favorite, the prediction to
win the SEC this year the Georgia Bulldogs number two,
the Texas Longhorns.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
Well we said that, you know, both of us. Until
Georgia gets beat, they're the favorite. I mean, if it
look at the shoe was on the other foot. Let's
just say the last three years Texas won the SEC
and everybody was talking about how great George was this
year and they were gonna make leaves and bounds and

(04:47):
it seems like they have it all together on paper.
We would be like, what are you talking about? Texas
is still number one. They were like, that's the flip
side of it, and Texas is not beating them yet.
So I would I would as much as it hurts
me to say it. Man, I have to put in

Georgia first, right now, I agree.

Speaker 4 (05:12):
So the predicted order finished Georgia one, Texas to This
is where it gets a little interesting here Mark ole
Miss number three with Lane Kiffen gone, the Baton Rouge
Peak Golding at stepped to number four Texas A and
M LSU five Alabama six. I know a lot of

a lot of stock being put into what Lane Kiffen
can do in near one in LSU Mark, and then
a lot of faith in what Pete Golding is returning
to Ole Miss despite you know, a brand new coaching
staff almost but hey, they keep their quarterback in Trinidad Chambliss,
and then.

A and M at four.

Speaker 4 (05:51):
But of course we obviously I think all agree is
a talented team yet just has not taken that next
step in the college football playoff.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
Well, you got us started by saying the coaches A
and M coaches returning Trinidad Chamberlains regardless of the fact
that he's an elite quarterback and is returning, and his
running back is an elite running back and is returning,

and they have pieces that wide receiver, they have one
of the biggest tight ends in college football. The coach
is not coming back. M. A and m's coaches coming back,
so I would I would give A and M the
nod over Mississippis oh miss because the fact that the

coach is coming back.

Oklahoma number seven in the prediction, Tennessee eight, Florida nine,
Missouri tenth.

Mark.

Speaker 4 (06:55):
This is where and when when people talk about this
upcoming season for Texas. I don't know if enough people
are discussing, really how tough of a schedule the Longhorn
savage here. They don't play Georgia this year, thank goodness,
in the regular season. If they play Georgia, it'll be
either in Atlanta or in the CFP or in a
bowl game. But you take away you look at the

top ten teams Georgia, Alabama, or the only two Texas
does not face.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
That's seven out.

Speaker 4 (07:25):
Of the top ten teams the Longhorns play on their
schedule in twenty twenty six. It's a sneaky, sneaky tough
schedule this year. Mark, And that doesn't even include Ohio
State come to austin Week two.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
Cam Every year Texas is going to have a hard
schedule because of the all of the rivalries. Texas is
everybody's rivalry game, and you just have to be more equipped.
I think this is the best year that they Texas
has been equipped. And the season is gonna be hard

for them because they have A and M, because they
have Oklahoma because now, uh, the relationship between coach Sarksian
and the coach at LSU, now that's Lane Kiffin. That's

(08:23):
gonna be a rivalry game because they just their rivals,
their their buddies there, they're ay, they talk about this
infamous chat that they're all on and the Kirby Smartest
is a rival not playing them this season in the season,
but it's inevitable. It's like it's like Thanos, like they're

(08:47):
gonna have that meeting at some point. And I don't
think that we are giving credit to Texas, A and M.
We're not giving credit to owe you as being top tier.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
Injury either one of those teams could be number one. Yep,
you get an injury on you get injury on Georgia,
an injury on Texas and an M and Oklahoma would
be buying for who's number one. That's how close it is.
It's not like it's its vast difference in talent in
this conference.

Speaker 4 (09:28):
Texas opens SEC play at Kentucky. The volunteers pick to
finish eighth in the conference. Then a week off, it's
the Red River Rivalry against Oklahoma. They're picked the finished
seventh and Brent Fennibles is very high on this Oklahoma team.
You have Florida coming to dk R. They were picked
to finish ninth in the SEC. Then you have Home

(09:52):
for Ole miss Pete Golden picked to finish third, just
behind Texas Mississippi State, which was picked to finish fifteenth.
So if you want to say, hey, there's an easy
team on the schedule, but Halloween Night against a Bulldog
team that Texas had to come from behind and win
an overtime last season, there's no such thing as an
easy win.

In the SEC.

Speaker 4 (10:09):
You have Missouri, which mark we'll have a conversation later
on in the second hour about maybe the toughest game
on the Texas schedule or the biggest sleeper. Missouri picked
the finish tenth. They have a really good team at
LSU Tiger Stadium. They're picked to finish fifth. And then
of course Arkansas, and then you end the season Thanksgiving
week Friday night, against Texas A and M. It's a very,

very tough schedule for the Longhorns, but a lot of
expectations for Steve Sarkejan Arch Manning and the Longhorns. Obviously,
media has high expectations, picking them to finish second in
the SEC.

What does sark make of that? Get to that later

Mark Henry, we are forty days away from kickoff. I
can't believe we are only forty days away, but we're
getting so close to Texas First, Texas State. A lot

the Bahamas, so thoughts and prairies with him.

He's just coming back from vacation, so he'll be back
with you guys tomorrow live in studio with Mark Henry.
Just filling and glad to be with you guys. Forty
days away from kickoff. Mark, I'm still in Florida, and
obviously the saltwater is getting to my brain. Chris Gordy's
joining us next hour at eight fifteen, not seven to fifteen.

There is a time difference that I guess I'm still
learning how to work out. So he will be joining
us next out, which gives us time Mark to talk
about something that you sent me last night, and I'm
glad you did. Joel Klatt from Fox on College Football Course,
I think a great analyst. I love his podcast as well.
On his last podcast, he released his preseason poll as well,

(12:38):
we just talked about Texas coming at number two in
the SEC Preseason Bowl. He released his top twenty five,
and here is where the Texas Longhorns landed. This is
Joel Clapp at number six.

Speaker 6 (12:52):
And I couldn't put them in the top five in
good conscience after what happened this last year, because they
were consensus number one last year, consensus Heisman from Runner
at the begin of the year and Texas fell on
their face. So Texas is going to come in at
number six. They came in with so much hype. This
is a little under that, right, not even in the
top five. And with all the parody, Listen, all of
these teams could be somewhat interchangeable. I think that this

is about right as far as expectations. We know Steve
Sarkshan's going to have a good football team. We know
they're going to be right there in terms of fighting
for a spot in the SEC Championship game, fighting for
a spot in the college football playoffs.

Speaker 3 (13:28):
Listen, Miami proved.

Speaker 6 (13:30):
If they proved anything to us, it's that if you're
right there and can get yourself into the tournament, maybe
you can go all the way. They were awfully close
to win in the National Championship, and there was a
debate whether they should be even included in the playoffs.
We know Texas is going to be right there, don't we.
They went big game hunting in the portal and I know,
and I've talked with a few of them, the Texas

(13:50):
folks down there, they feel like they've upgraded. I know
that some of the star power from the recruiting classes left.
Cam Coleman was a huge get from Auburn out at
wide receiver. Hollywood Smothers is a really good player at
running back. Ralik Brown, He's been to a lot of places,
you know, USC, Arizona State.

Speaker 5 (14:08):
He comes in at running back.

Speaker 6 (14:10):
You got some good players out of the portal from
the defensive side of the football, and they're going to
have a change at defensive coordinator with Pete Kwakowski on
the out and bringing in Will Musschamp, who's been at
Texas before but certainly been in the SEC for a
long time. I like what I see from Texas. We're
going to see Texas early in the season. They're going
to welcome into Ohio State in that return matchup from
the Buckeyes. They've got to travel to Tennessee. They get

Oklahoma in the neutral site game. Obviously, they've got Ole
Miss on the schedule. They've got to go to Baton
Rouge and play LSU, They've got to go to College
Station and play Texas.

Speaker 5 (14:41):
A and M.

Speaker 6 (14:41):
It's going to be manageable. And again they'll be right there.
And as you know, this is a lot different than
it used to be. These teams could be six, they
could be twelve because of the parody in college football,
which is what I think makes this so great.

Speaker 3 (14:54):
Hate hate hate.

Speaker 2 (14:57):
Joe Klatt is a hate and everything that he said
complimentary after he opened his big mouth and said that
Texas he in all good faiths he could not put
them in the top five was it was the best

gravy that you ever tasted put on a hockey puck.
That's what it was. He basically served you up the
hockey puck and then expected you to like it and
then put gravy on it.

Speaker 3 (15:36):
Don't put gravy on it, Joe, Say what your chess.

Joe Klatt is a hater And he said, yeah, I
talked to it, and you could hear the disdain in
his voice.

I talked to those long harmed fans long harm.

And then he stopped himself because he realized how he sounded,
and then he changed it up again, like if you hate,
just going to hate. I hate closet haters. I want
you listen. If you are racist, I want you to
be an all out racist. If you're gonna be a hater,
be an all out hater. Don't don't hide behind closed

doors and and and and and uh and and try
to placate because you you're either afraid of the fallout
or you will find out that you may be on
an island by yourself. That's what Joe Klatt did, and
I didn't like it. And I really feel like they
need to monitor the hate because I want when Texas

to uh, when Texas to do what they're gonna do,
which is uh, the minimum is they'll they'll drop two games,
and I don't think they will. And don't talk about
how good the roster is and and the additions and

the people that developed. More Texas has people that are
developing into great players. You don't think that arch Manon
is gonna be better than he was last year.

You're crazy.

You don't think Trevor Gooseby is going to be better
than he was last year.

Colin Simmons, all of the.

Speaker 2 (17:22):
Notables, the notables, we know that they're gonna be better
because they have to be. But what about all the
guys Lance Jackson. Lance Jackson shined last year. You don't
think that he's not gonna be better. And if I'm
a defensive tackle for Texas, I'm working harder than anybody

on that team because you do not want to be
the unit that doesn't have a standout on it and
then they're gonna call you the weak link. You know
who got the weak link Monica last year special teams
because they were.

Listen, if the if the coach don't get this uh
special teams together this year, he gonna get fired.

Speaker 3 (18:09):
Just hey, I'm just calling space to space. This is
the truth. We we we see the people the fans
on on on clicking in right now.

Mark Henry speaking the truth this morning. I'm listen. This
special teams need. If you love your coach, you need
to get out there on that special teams and make
sure that this special team shine because if you don't,
you have a new coach next year. This this the

standard is the standards. Coach Sarkisian. He says that all
the time because that's what they say in the coaching offices.
Every coach has. The standard is winning. That's what the
standard is. The standard means second place, third place. We'll

(19:05):
tolerate that for a year, maybe two. With that third year,
you better pick it up. Are you gonna be looking
for work?

Speaker 4 (19:16):
Well, it's funny you just said the standard is the standard.
Obviously we've heard Steve's r C. Steve's our keys. You
say that a couple of million times. Well he's about
to say it again. Here is Sard from the SEC
media days, when asked about his expectations for the upcoming season.

Speaker 7 (19:31):
I think this, you know, the standards the standard at
the University of Texas. I think you guys who cover
us on a regular basis and cover the you know
all of our programs. No, we compete for championships every year,
and it doesn't matter what conference we're in, whether it's
the Big Twelve or the SEC. You know, our our
goals don't change. You know, we're competing for an SEC

(19:51):
championship this year, and we're competing for a national championship.
It is what it is that North University of Texas.
There are rebuilding years. There aren't built years where say, hey,
if we can get here, it's gonna be okay. Like
that's our mission. That's what we go for a year
in and year out. And so it's ironic when you know,
I had some time the last few days to you know,
to watch kind of media days a little bit and

(20:13):
people talking about expectations for Texas. I can tell you
the expectations are a lot higher within our within our
building than they are on the outside world. And so
that's a good thing that we've got. We've got a
team and a culture that is on that is on
the mission, you know, collectively and together.

Speaker 3 (20:31):
And that that's likely right.

Speaker 2 (20:34):
We we said on this show, we get the interviews.
We talked to all of the sports writers, Eric Henry
and war Richardson. You man, we go through the gambit
of guys that know the inside and outs, and everybody
keeps saying the same thing. Texas will be disappointed with

second place in the SEC. Texas will be disappointed not
being a top four in the tournament. So that that
is that in itself says that it's win or it's
win or bus.

You you don't bring in all of the guys that
they brought in, develop all of the guys that they developed,
recruit the way that they recruited, and not have a
mentality of all right, we we we we feel, we
feel the coboard the covered is full. Now we got
to cook the meal.

Hey, high expectations Steve Sarkus and Texas they are leaning
into it. Sark said their expectations inside the building are
higher than what he saw from the media days. How
often do you see that, especially when it comes to
Texas and what we see from the talking heads. The
expectations for Texas always been up here, but sark has

raised the bar himself. We're gonna hear more from Steve
sarkjan his thoughts on the roster he has in Austin

Trevor Gooseby, a kid who is a leader of the
offensive line, and the two of us both think will
be a first round draft pick come next season. So,

without further ado, here's Trevor Goosby.

Trevor Goosby getting ready for the run up to the season.
This year, for you personally feel different than the past.
Being a veteran, now the fact that everybody knows this
is a good football team, but all that other stuff,
it is there a different feel for you.

Speaker 5 (23:41):
I think absolutely.

Speaker 9 (23:42):
You know just as you you know progress through the seasons,
you know your role kind of changes sometimes. So I
went from being kind of a more of a bench
player to being a you know, possibly could start the game,
you know, like if if something happens, you could put
him into you know, being a starter. And now hopefully
you know, you know, being a leader on the team.
And so that's kind of where it feels different from
me because you know, just kind of my responsibility to

(24:04):
the team is a little bit different now.

Speaker 1 (24:06):
So I wanted to ask you because that's a great
point and great thought process with it all. But as
you started to look and see where you were as
a young player, the work that you had to put in,
the thought process, the amount of time of study, is
that something that you have gotten you've obviously gotten better
at it, but is that something that you've passed on

(24:27):
to some of the younger players about Hey, when I
came in, I was at the same status as you.

Speaker 5 (24:33):
But what I learned throughout this time is that the.

Speaker 1 (24:35):
More you get ahead of stuff, the easier the position
is going to be.

Speaker 3 (24:40):
No.

Speaker 9 (24:40):
Yeah, absolutely, I'm always trying to have out our young guys.
You know, whether it's John Turntime, you know, John tay
Newman who he just got you know, whether it's you know,
Jordan Coleman, Devin Coleman, those kind of guys. You know,
I'm always trying to give them little little tidbits of
stuff that I learned from you know, Kevin Banks and
Jake Majors and you know, you know older guys. I'm
always just trying to be like, hey, you know, this
is kind of what I did, you know, coming in

(25:01):
as a three star coming in because me personally, I
don't think I was that good in high.

Speaker 8 (25:04):
School, to be honest, you know, so you were looked
at us a future Trevor, you know, definitely a working product,
unfinished product.

Speaker 9 (25:14):
But you know I always try and you know, you know,
share my knowledge with those guys.

Speaker 8 (25:17):
So what's the most important thing you could a bit
of advice you could give a young offensive lineman starting out.

Speaker 9 (25:23):
I think I think what I would say is like this,
the game is a race of maturity, you know, just
trying to become a more mature player and take things
seriously and you know, having a routine and you know,
just things like that. So just kind of trying to
become a more mature player and take things like seriously
and also just the you know the value of hard work,
you know, putting in the work, and you know, watching

(25:45):
the older guys and seeing like hey, Like for me,
I was like, hey, Kelvin is doing this, and he's
about to be a first round picks.

Speaker 5 (25:51):
You know, I might as well do that too.

Speaker 9 (25:53):
You know, just kind of those are those are the
biggest things.

Speaker 1 (25:55):
I would say, what was some of the biggest improvements
that you wanted to make for yourself every year? Because
obviously foot work, you were an athlete, you played basketball.
Your brothers now at the University of Texas as a
basketball player, so you've already had that working through. But
then each step of the way, there's certain techniques and
things that you had to.

Speaker 5 (26:14):
Get better at.

Speaker 1 (26:15):
What was this year's major focus for you coming into
the season.

Speaker 9 (26:19):
I think just strength overall, you know, just trying to
get stronger, you know, lower body, upper body, just kind
of all around being able to you know, anchor down
on bull rushes or remove guys off the ball. And
that's kind of what my biggest you know aspect I
think I was working on this offseason. You know, despite
the shoulder ender injury, you know, I'm still working hard
to gain that strength and also just continue to gain
my flexibility and just be able to bend even more

(26:41):
because you know, I'm already a tall guy, so I
got to get down.

Speaker 8 (26:44):
So how would you describe what it's been like, the adjustment,
the chemistry with the new guys coming in, even the
latest of additions, and with the chemistry is like Ben
on the old line in the off season.

Speaker 9 (26:57):
It's been phenomenal. I was telling Connor our Center the
other day, like, I think this is one of the
closest groups we've ever had, despite all the you know,
the transfers, and you know, Melvin and Lawrence and John
Say and those guys, they make it super easy. You know,
They're super inviting, and you know, you know, Lawrence is
more of a quieter guy, so you know, we had
to we had to bring him along. And you know Melvin,
he's a super talkative guy, you know, and we just

(27:19):
kind of really bonded, you know, on and off the field.

Speaker 1 (27:22):
So we're talking to Trevor Gooseby and Goosby, you know,
I just mentioned your brother Austin now being on the
forty acres. Obviously, being with your family is something that
everybody has talked about at the University of Texas, but
how important has that been for you to be away
from football but have family members there just to share

(27:42):
things with.

Speaker 9 (27:43):
It's been amazing. It's been great because you know, Austin's
seen me since I was a little kid, back when
I was chasing him around with a trying to throw
chairs at him and stuff when he would annoy the
crap out of me, you know, and uh, you know,
he's seen me from that point, and you know, I've
seen him grow up and you know, turn to the
man that he is today. And so it's just I'm
grateful to have somebody that I'm able to just talk
to him be like, you know, I know that you're

(28:03):
gonna be there for me all the time.

Speaker 8 (28:05):
Do you think he is grateful to have you to
lean on, especially as he makes this transition into being
a Texas long worn into being a college student, into
being a freshman all.

Of that stuff, I would think. So he'll never say it,
but but you know, I think he does lean on
me a good amount, you know, And just I'm always
trying to give him, like you said, with the with
the young guys in the room, you know, I'm just
trying to give him to bits of you know, because
he wants to do the business school.

Speaker 5 (28:31):
Just like I am. And I'm like, it's gonna be tough.
You know, I've been through it, and you know I'm
here to help you out, you know.

Speaker 9 (28:37):
And you know, being a college athlete bouncing down with
the academics here at the University of Texas is a
hard thing to do. I've done it the past four years.
So I'm able to help you out with this and
give you this advice.

Speaker 8 (28:47):
Was it possible for Arch to be even more competitive
than he's beneventu? All I hear is about stuff in
the summer when you guys have the scavenger hunt all
that stuff.

Speaker 5 (28:55):
How competitive a guy he is?

Speaker 8 (28:58):
How would you see how he has evolved as well
as a competitor as an individual.

Speaker 5 (29:04):
As well as obviously as a quarterback. Absolutely, you know,
as a competitor.

Speaker 9 (29:07):
And we kind of saw this, you know, started to
begin last year of you know, him just kind of
wanting it more.

Speaker 5 (29:12):
And you know it showed through his play, you know.

Speaker 9 (29:15):
I just I was just talking about the Florida game
and how he was just getting hammered and then killed
and six sacks and you know, however many hits he had.

Speaker 5 (29:24):
You know, and that was our fault, that was the
old line's fault.

Speaker 9 (29:26):
And you know, he came back the next week and
you know, didn't bat ny at the old line and
just took every rep and then we went to the
OU game and you know we beat them. So that
for me was you know, that's top tier competitor level
right there. That's that's what cycle called unique competitor. We
love to talk about.

Speaker 1 (29:42):
Iron sharpening iron and obviously mentioned Arch being here, and
of course Colin Simmons. Colin Simmons is somebody that I
know you've talked about him a bit about how.

Speaker 5 (29:53):
Hard he works and what this is all about.

Speaker 1 (29:56):
But when you going against each other every single day,
does he coach you and say, hey, this is what
I saw when you're set up that made me think
I could do this, and you doing the same thing
for him vice versa.

Speaker 9 (30:07):
Yeah, we talk every every time we practice. I'm like,
all right, Console, so what were you trying to do
here with this movie? He'll come up to me and
be like, all right, so what are you trying to
do with your hands here? And so you know, we're
just kind of giving each other more information, you know,
about the other positions. So when it does come time
to play the game, you know, we're both prepped and
we're both you know, experienced, and what the other guy
is going to do, Like you said, iron sharpening and

(30:28):
iron like Colin Simmons is, you know, one of the
best defensive players in the country, and so being able
to go against him and you know, you know Lance
Jackson and Xena and Mosla and those kind of guys
at the edge position.

Speaker 5 (30:38):
You know, I'm going.

Speaker 9 (30:40):
Against the best of the best every day and so
that don't really prepare me for or preparing me for
every game that you know is coming up.

Speaker 8 (30:45):
So final thing here, what are you most looking forward
to for this twenty twenty six college football season.

Speaker 9 (30:53):
I think just playing with the guys, you know, just
playing with this team, and you know, not not for
the you know, on paper we're a really good team,
but just playing with the caliber of guys that we have,
in the caliber of men that we have, you know,
just kind of all over the board offense, defense, even
you know, the coaches, you know, they're really bringing that
energy and you know, they bring that culture together and
just being able to play with those guys, and you know,

I guess lay my life on the line for those guys.

It means a lot to me. It means everything.

Speaker 1 (31:18):
Before we let you go, we wanted to ask you
obviously you weren't appendent today and it says every fifteen minutes.
You obviously just had your football camp about when as
a kid you had open heart surgery, and that's something
that a lot of people have no idea about. Coach
Sark obviously had the same thing. You and him have
had a chance to bond over that. But what is

it about that that really stands out to you that
can help somebody else?

Speaker 9 (31:45):
I think for me, just the experience and how much
that that you know, it took a toll on me,
and just kind of I don't feel I feel like
it's not talked about enough, you know, congenital heart diseases,
and you know it isn't one of the top talked about,
you know, awareness programs in the country, and so I
just want to, you know, be a platform the kids
that you know are going through that, and you know
that they ask somebody to look you know, up to

and look look towards to to find that confidence and
to find you know that I guess that uh that
guidance to get through it.

better than the other, but because of the fact that

Like if you when you think about, okay, when you're
in the playoffs, Eastern Conference finals, your best five against
their best five. I think obviously the Knicks, they've always
had a dynamic closing group.

It was just, you know, can they be healthy?

And finally last season, you know we saw it with
Anthony Towns, an Anobi, mckel Bridges, Jillen Brunson outstanding and
the course Mitchell Robinson too. But with Philadelphia and you
think about it with with Tyres Maxi Now Jalen Brown,
you know, a part of that questionable move by Boston
shipping him to one of their biggest rivals in the

Eastern Conference, a team that now they're gonna have to
run through to one another championship. And then you throw
in James j Edgecombe and Joel Embiid. You know, that's
that's a that's a closing five that is up there
with one of the best closing fivees you know in
the league, with New York, with OKC, with San Antonio.

Now the biggest question mark is can they stay healthy. Well,
they have that closing five come come, May come June,
because we know when Joel Ebiad's healthy, he's one of
the best players in the NBA. I mean, his numbers
are ridiculous. It's right up there with Nikola Jokich. The
problem is he has not really been healthy in you know,

in the playoffs in what four five years? And then
also Mark, and I know you'll get to this in
your World's Strongest Take, how does Lebron fit in with
Jalen Brown?

James I had question marks on how Jalen Brown would
fit in with the ball handling skills of Tyrese Maxi
considering how much on ball we saw Jaylen Brown last

the stuff with Bronnie last year and the postgame locker

Away from me. And you're not going to do that
at Texas. You're not going to do that against this
Texas defense.

I want to get to some sound real quick before
this first break. Obviously a lot of talent on this
Texas roster. We've debated whether or not it's the most
talented roster that Steve Sarkejian has had during his time
at Texas.

He was straight up asked about it at the SEC
media Days.

Here are his thoughts, Well, I think we have a
talented roster. I think time will tell as the season
comes and as we play. And you know, as I said,
knock on wood, you know we don't have you know,
injuries at certain spots. You know, you're always deeper at
some spots than others. But I like our team, you know,
I like the depth. I like that. I think we're

a very versatile team. I don't think we're imbalanced on
offense or defense or in one area. I think I
think we're really good. We're gonna have a good offensive
football team. You're a good defensive football team. I think
we're going to be well equipped to play well on
special teams. But those things have to come to life.

You know.

Speaker 7 (49:05):
You know, talent gets you, so follows me. You have
to play the game.

Speaker 3 (49:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (49:10):
So when he was asked the question straight up, Mark,
he was asked, is this your most talented roster you've
had yet? And I think obviously Sark didn't come out
and just say, yeah, it is, because you can put
yourself into a corner and all of a sudden, if
you start out, you know, you lose to Ohio State,
and maybe you lose to Tennessee or two and two,
then all of a sudden, everyone's asking you what you
had them. You said you had the most talented roster,

(49:30):
but you don't. The way he kind of warded that, Mark,
there is a quiet confidence in there from Sark where
I think the answer is yes. It may not be
the most talented roster. But it's for sure up there.
The way he talked about how balanced the offense is,
the defenses, the special teams is doesn't think there's a

weakness at any position. There's a quiet confidence in there
from Sark heading in to this season. I truly believe
that Sark thinks he actually has a team that can
compete and win a national championship.

Well, I don't believe you should not say what you
really mean because you think you know of what everybody
else might say. As the putting your foot in your
mouth is not over confidence if it's the truth and
you hold your team accountable.

Guys, we're not playing up to our ability.

Like, let's go out and play to our ability and
nobody can say anything that mentality will get you wins.

And Gordy, let's start with this. You were out in
Tampa all week last week covering.

The SEC Media Days. Give us your your biggest takeaway
doesn't have to be Texas football related, but your biggest
takeaway from the SEC Media Days for twenty twenty six.

Speaker 10 (51:56):
Yeah. I love the SEC Mediya Days because it's it
what is it that old saying.

Speaker 11 (52:02):
Like, you know, optimism or whatever it is. Everybody's optimistic,
Like everybody thinks they've they've fixed all their problems.

Speaker 10 (52:10):
Everybody thinks, you know, this is gonna be the year.

Speaker 11 (52:13):
Even the teams that were bad or like, we're gonna
be way better this year. And so it's like but
I think it does go back to further elevate that.
Like I think top to bottom, the SEC is the
best conference in terms of anybody can beat anybody on
any given Saturday, And I think that's different from what
you know the Big Ten is. Right now, There's no
way in hell Rutgers is gonna.

Speaker 10 (52:35):
Beat Oregon or your Ohio state.

Speaker 11 (52:36):
There's no way in hell, Ford or Wisconsin is gonna
be you know, one of those teams, or Indiana or whatever.
So I think in the SEC, we saw Mississippi State
nearly beat Texas last year, Kentucky nearly beat Texas last year.

Speaker 10 (52:49):
Georgia was in a dogfight with a couple of teams.

Speaker 11 (52:51):
So I think I think that's what is the sign
of a stronger conference, not you know which which team
from a conference won a national championship. Everybody celebrating the
Big Ten all thirty straight years of the Big Ten
winning a national championship. That's great, but that just tells
me you're really top heavy. That just tells me you
got you know, you had three really good teams at
the top. And honestly, guys, like if you played a

(53:13):
Big Ten schedule, you realize how soft charm and soft.

Speaker 10 (53:17):
It is that you can just kind of put it
on auto.

Speaker 11 (53:19):
Pilot, play one tough team a year, and then yeah,
when Indiana gets to the playoff last year, you know what,
Indiana had health and rest and they weren't, you know, Texas.
You know, even if Texas had made the playoff last year,
they would have come in like kind of dragging their foot, going,
oh my god, we're beat up. Indiana came in fresh
as a daisy, like they just say easy path here.

Speaker 10 (53:38):
So yeah, we can beat the hell out of Alabama.

Speaker 11 (53:40):
We can beat all these teams because they were one
hundred percent healthy and playing great. So I just think
that's the difference in the teams in the SEC.

Speaker 3 (53:48):
Mister Gordy, I got a question for you.

Speaker 2 (53:50):
Tampa does not seem like a city for college football,
Like why do you think they chose Tampa? And do
you think that it is better to be in Nasvilla
next year?

Speaker 11 (54:06):
Yeah, I mean it's it's interesting. I think I think
they've tried different things on Let's bear, I've been going
to SEC medias for fifteen years and he used to
be in Birmingham, Alabama, Hoover to be Ezach and that
went free.

Speaker 10 (54:19):
Hotel just got too small.

Speaker 11 (54:21):
I mean they were literally putting the radio stations in
like the hallway of the hotel, and once we got
over twenty, I mean they were pushing them into the mall,
like the gallery of there. They were like literally setting
up radio stations in the walkway outside the you know,
Swinson's ice cream shop like it was you know, there's
like we ran out of space.

Speaker 10 (54:40):
So they had to take this thing on the road.

Speaker 11 (54:42):
They did Atlanta a couple of times, the Chick fil
A Hall of Fame all that.

Speaker 10 (54:46):
That's cool.

Speaker 11 (54:47):
But they tried to experiment with the first year of
Texas and Oklahoma came in. They went to Dallas, which
isn't technically an SEC footprint, but obviously had in Texas
and Oklahoma. It was kind of a good, good little starter,
I said, Tampa. I just think they wanted to try
something different.

Speaker 10 (55:03):
You're right.

Speaker 11 (55:03):
I mean, it's it's not really in the SEC footprint.
It's probably more you know, acc country when you consider
Miami down there in South Florida.

Speaker 10 (55:11):
See yeah, so I mean, but it was cool. I
mean I give them credit for trying something new.

Speaker 11 (55:16):
I think the city of Tampa did did a great
mosted a great event, all the extra you know, media
parties and stuff like that. They did a great job.

Speaker 10 (55:23):
But yeah, they announced the're going to go back to Nashville.
I haven't told New Orleans.

Speaker 11 (55:27):
Is on their list, like they're gonna get to New
Orleans eventually. I just think it's it's it's better to
stay inside the SEC footprint and uh well, let's also
be real, like if we went to Faetteville, Arkansas, and
nobody would be excited about any of this, So.

Keep it in the SEC footprint.

But I'd love to see Houston go there because it
would be a lot easier for US folks in Texas
to get there.

Was there a coach or a player at the media
days that you looked bad as Okay, I see something

player over others.

I'll tell you this. Guys and Longhorn fans aren't gonna
like this.

But I am way higher now on on Oklahoma than
I was. I think John Mattier I talked to a
demanding passing academy a few weeks ago, and he talked
about you know that thumb and how he had to
like adjustice throwing style and everything with the broken And
what's crazy to me is when you consider Jametier was
not a good throw of the football after that thumb surgery.

He had to justice throw his delivery everything, and yet
Oklahoma still went ten and two and made the playoff.
Now they have a Jamatier that's fixed this throw. It
looks like it's a more tighter, compact release. That ball
comes out quicker, and they got a bread Ventable's defense
that's fully loaded. Again, Oklahoma is a dangerous, dangerous team.
I just look at the schedule of schedules, pretty tough

you have Texas finishing?

Yeah, not pandering at all. I did pick Texas to
win it all. Texas won Georgia two. So I'm an
arch truther. I was a fan of arts last year.
I think we put the park before the horse a
little bit. He had to settle in and and and
and get himself right, and obviously we saw what he did.
Is the season won a long You know, Colin Simmons,

I'm a huge fan. I've got to interview him last
week at Media Days. You know, I think he's he
set for a huge year. I think the world must
champ higher. This is gonna be a much more aggressive defense.
Everybody said that, you know, exotic blitzes, all that kind
of stuff, and then you know the addition of Cam
Coleman to go with Ryan Wing going all those pieces
they have. I just think you've gotta love every move

that Texas has made this offseason.

They got to go live up to the hype.

But to me, I just I love this Texas team
and I think that they are primed for a for.

A deep deep run.

Am, what do you think about coach Muschamps. He loves
us in the middle linebacker, right up the front, right
up the middle to put pressure in the quarterback's face.
It's gonna put a little strain on Texas and safeties,
but I think that these safeties are gonna be able

to step up. Cam mentioned Jelani McDonald earlier. Uh, Julana
McDonald will have to make a lot of recognition calls,
uh to get to where we think he's gonna be.

But we think he can do it. Uh. But do
you think that is that teams are gonna, I don't know.

Make adjustments, But do you think that teams are gonna
be able to deal with having pressure come from acconon
Simmons and right up the middle in your face?

I go back to gosh, you know, I was I
was starting to you know, get getting a bad version
and uh fan of l s u back you know
three when when must Champ was one of the assistants
on that staff, and you know, Kirry Smart was there
as well. But but the thing must Champ always always
brought was you know, and this is him and Saban

working together. They would find ways to to bring pressure,
whether it was a blitzing corner, where it was a
blitzing safety, whether it was a blitzing linebacker, and they
never repeat the same one.

It was always different. It was always changing.

Speaker 11 (01:00:05):
Then there were times they would show blitz and then
pull everybody back and everybody drops in the coverage. So
will's really smart from a scheme standpoint that?

Speaker 10 (01:00:13):
Yeah? I mean, look all you got to do.

Speaker 11 (01:00:14):
And this is where I think people get lost when
we talk about pressure is.

Speaker 10 (01:00:18):
It doesn't have to result in a sacon. It doesn't,
you know.

All it has to result is forcing that quarterback to
make a split second decision where he's just accuracies, just
off a little bit gets tipped at the line.

Speaker 10 (01:00:30):
Suddenly it turns into an interception.

Speaker 11 (01:00:32):
I mean, there's all those little things that you that
you can do when you bring pressure. Yes, there are
gonna be times where you get burned by the blitz
that you blitzed a guy and it left one man
in single coverage and you.

Speaker 10 (01:00:43):
Got beat, so be it. You live by the blitz,
you die by the blitz.

Speaker 11 (01:00:46):
But I do think that's what Stark was thinking and
bringing it Will saying, we got to get much more
aggressive here.

Speaker 10 (01:00:52):
We got to bring pressure.

Speaker 11 (01:00:53):
We can't let these quarterbacks stand back there in the
pocket and pick us apart. And I think we saw
that a little bit Toms text I about to be
as the overall was good last year, it wasn't great,
and that's what the difference was. At times quarterbacks were
able to sit back there and kind of pick apart
that secondary. Again, I think most Texas fans will be finally, look,
you're gonna get burned a time or two, but overall,

(01:01:14):
can you disrupt that quarterback enough to keep them off
the spot and maybe it forces a couple extra turnovers
this year, and so it will be very interesting to
see how they how they handle that.

Speaker 4 (01:01:25):
Gordy will wrap with this. We've been talking about it
on today's show. What is an SEC matchup that you're
looking forward to the most this season?

Speaker 10 (01:01:37):
I mean, here's the thing, guys.

Speaker 11 (01:01:38):
Week three, everybody's talking about the lsu Ole Miss game.

Speaker 10 (01:01:42):
And yes, so it is a very important game, but
you guys, you know, it's out.

Speaker 11 (01:01:47):
Like back in the day we used to have it
was SEC West and SEC East, and so your SEC
West games were always way more important. For instance, like
if LSU was playing Old Miss, that'd be a way
more important game than that if they were playing in Georgia.
They can lose the Georgian O big deal, But you
wanted to beat your SEC West FoST because the standing Well,
when Texas and Oklahoma joy we did away with East
and West. It's just wide open. It's just two best

(01:02:09):
teams go to Atlanta. So that that l shule of
this game isn't as big a deal as I think
we're making it out to be. Olmis can lose that game,
it's still make the playoff. LSU can lose that game
and still make the playoff.

Speaker 3 (01:02:22):
But is it.

About winning the game or is it about the everything
that comes with it, with the coaching and the administration
and players that left and are now going to be
playing against the guys that.

They lined up with last year.

a pride thing.

But the thing I was trying to get to with
that game is I don't even like that's a big
game that night. But there's another game that night that
we're not talking enough about, and it's Auburn hosting Florida.
It's a monumental game from a standpoint of Auburn wanted
John Summrall, they couldn't get him, They settled for Alex Goulish.
Florida got John Summroll after they missed out.

On the lane. Different thing.

That is a huge early season game and year one
of both US guys tenures to show that this school
made the right higher. Right, if Florida goes into Auburn
and wins, they go, oh my god, John Severrawl's achieved
this in year one. We might be we might go
ten and two, we might get into the playoff. Whereas
Auburn needs to justify their hiring of Alex s Golis
should go, we made the right higher. Let's be Florida.

So again, it's kind of a it's a sneaky, kind
of under the radar game.

Look, we know about Texas, Ohio State, and I mean
all these other big games, but in my opinion, that
Auburn Florida game is just really big. It can set
the tone for what the John Severral tenure is in
Florida and what the Alex Goals tenure is at Auburn.

plays five. Giannas plays four, but he usually plays five too.

So when I say big top five, the only guy
in that equation that's not a top five is Edgecombe,
and he's.

Is gonna be very difficult to stop their offense because.

The thing that made Miami win was the fact that

guy that ended up being the first guy was Dwayne Wade.

The flash role can be filled by Edgecomb, it could
be felled by Maxie. The thing that Lebron James did
not have in Miami was a Brown, a big slasher
that not only could he draw a double team and

get the ball to him, he will be able to
get the ball to guys because Mac as soon as
Maxie and Edgecomb see Brown go to the basket, they're
going to go to their spots. And once you recognize
the spots of where they shoot from in the view

of Brown, They're going to be very deadly because now
you've got to recover and go to defend them, and
both of them can get their own shot off the dribble.
Like this team is very, very versatile. And we haven't
even said anything about joelnbid joln Bee's job is going

(01:10:06):
to be easier than it has in years past because
in the half court he's going to play what you
call the dunk position, which is behind the backboard on
the baseline in between the hashes, and all he has
to do is just take the dump pass and dunk
it and go down court. He's never been afforded that

(01:10:29):
because he likes to play the wing. All the running
from the wing to the paint. All the running from
the wing to the flash into the free throw line
is overwhere for joelnb less miles on the bus and

(01:10:50):
he'll be able to at times play out on the
perimeter and Lebron James play the dunk and then you
run the same offense and he has a shorter distance
between him at the top of the three throw the
top of the three point line.

To get back on defense, this is gonna be a very,
very scary Now, the bench is gonna be important, and
they have some quality guys on their bench, but the
bigs that they have are not Joel and Bid.

They are big, clunky guys that you know, play defense,
block shots, rebounds.

They're gonna have to get a rim runner guy. They're
gonna have to.

with the Spurs in the championship this year and it's

will be the one Houston the NBA Championship trophy next year.
