The Zone Coach Stark met with the media yesterday and
we will talk a lot about that. The Texas Trio
take Home Player of the Week honors Joe Cook of
(00:48):
Inside Texas joins us at seven forty. The Major League
Baseball season started with the award season That's right, as
the National League Rookie of the Year was no surprise.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
A New York state of mind is totally.
Speaker 2 (01:03):
Lost and the World's Strongest take brought to you by
the world's Strongest Man.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
That's right.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
I am your host, Mike Harball Haart.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
My co host is a WWEE Hall of Famer and
the world's strongest man. He is Mark Henry. What's going
on man, Good morning, my brother, good morning, good morning.
Our guy Khalil is behind the boards. And of course,
if you want to be a part of the show,
and we appreciate every time that you are texta word
texas followed by our message to eight one five three zero.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
Standard data and message rates may apply.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
That's the word texas followed by your message to eight
one five three zero. But we have to start the
show off with some sad news. No, not anyone that
we know passed away. It was the Dallas Cowboys. They
played last night. And when we literally say the sky
is falling, that is what happened yesterday as the Cowboys
(01:59):
decide that they wanted to open the roof, roof the roof,
and Jerry just sitting up.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
There looking at the roof like he was that's not
my problem, bro.
Speaker 5 (02:09):
He no, no, no, he was pissed.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
He takes so much pride in having the best stadium
in the world.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
Not so fast, my friend, So fast, my friend.
Speaker 5 (02:19):
This is this sheet some metal folk Thank god.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
That it was before the game, and it was before
any of the people got in there, because hearts. When
that that sheet of metal fell, they said it weighed
like two hundred and fifty pounds, two hundred and fifty
pounds of sheet metal falling from the top of a stadium.
Speaker 5 (02:43):
If it hit somebody, it would have killed them.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
Thank god that that that was nobody on the field.
When they tried to open the roof the roof, excuse me,
the roof.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
We we loved that, We loved the outside. We're gonna
open the roof the roof.
Speaker 5 (02:59):
My gosh.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Yeah, it is uh, it is turning into a comedy.
Speaker 6 (03:06):
Man.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
That's that's basic comedy, Uh, I have that's the Cowboys.
Speaker 5 (03:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
It is one of those deals where you continue to
to truly basking the failures of the I'm you're not
basking in it, but the fans of other teams are.
You Look at you know, the Houston Texans last night.
They obviously had a lot of success, They got the dub,
(03:37):
but their fan base was really exciting the Cowboys or
the Texans. The Cowboys and the Texas Longhorns. People take
pride in watching them. They don't watch them for the
the fan of the Cowboy fan and Longhorn fans are
excited about it, right, Yeah, but everybody else is excited
(03:58):
when they lose. So it is one of those types
of situations to where people really basking the joy of
watching the Cowboys fail because they're as you like to say,
huber Is, they're varied. They don't stink. It is the
way that they carry themselves.
Speaker 1 (04:18):
As you said, Jerry Jones believes that his stadium, this coliseum,
is just that it is where the gladiators will come.
And before I'm in front of me and now we're
sitting there watching a two them.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
Your Cason is pretty good. Know what I'm saying, Thank you.
Speaker 5 (04:40):
Washington over there.
Speaker 3 (04:47):
That's good as a as a.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Dallas Cowboy fan, I still wear the clown sit Last night,
I did everything possible to not show my affiliation to
the Cowboys, but I said, I got.
Speaker 3 (05:00):
A ride with him.
Speaker 6 (05:00):
Man.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
I told you I'm loyal. I'm loyal to it, man.
I'm real with what it is. And what we've been
able to see is Cooper Rush. People were talking about
Dak Prescott and how many times does he throw the
ball during the football game.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
He needs to do this.
Speaker 5 (05:14):
He needs to do this. Do you know that.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
Cooper rush through the ball last night? Fifty four times? Yeah,
fifty five times, fifty.
Speaker 5 (05:21):
Five times hards.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
I tried not to watch, but if I'm gonna tell
you what I did, I'm not gonna sit here and
lie I was watching, and then I said, twenty to ten,
they might be able to score right here. And they
were driving yep, and of course you know that that's
that drives doll of course.
Speaker 5 (05:42):
And what did they do? They tried to go fourth.
Speaker 1 (05:46):
Down and throw like punt, a fake club faith.
Speaker 5 (05:52):
But I turned to another channel. I hurt my thumb.
I turned the channel so hard.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Try to turn the fast over there. Yeah, I ain't
watching this no more. That's what happened. And then all
of a sudden you turn back to it.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
No I didn't. I went to sweep my man threw
a fake punt four yards?
Speaker 3 (06:09):
What is wrong with them? And they needed eight?
Speaker 1 (06:14):
I'm just like, this is this is a It really
is a comedy of errors.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
Well, let's listen to Joe Buck and Troy Aikman with
the celebration of Joe Mixing, who by the way, had
three rushing touchdowns.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
Time at the line of scrimmage. Once they get up there,
hand the.
Speaker 7 (06:32):
Mixing, cut back, Joe Mixing, comebye, touchdown Texans.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
And you can hear Tamiko Ryan in the celebration of
a team that needed to bounce back and get a win.
But I caution Texans fans, you did beat the Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Hey, man, Hey, great job, man, Hey, proud of you guys.
We talked about bouncing back.
Speaker 8 (06:58):
Bounced him back stronger, right, that's strong comeback right there?
Speaker 6 (07:01):
All right, love, how you guys were.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Down then all week, right, and they showed up on
the field, all right.
Speaker 4 (07:06):
And it showed up in a lot of different ways,
all right.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
First off, I playing past and aggressive in the run game,
got first game ball right here, three touchdowns on the honeyard.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
And there it is right there.
Speaker 6 (07:22):
Man.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
I mean they all should get a spanking because he
should have had four touchdowns a five because they stopped
running the ball in the first half when he was
probably getting six yards seven yards a clip. The tech
care the Texans moved to seven excuse me, seven and
four on the season. The Cowboys fall to three and
(07:44):
seven oher and five at home, and you know, we
talked about affecting Jerry Jones. The only way you're gonna
bring about change is the pocket is the pockets.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
It was scarce in the stadium yesterday. Oh great, there
was not a lot of people. They might have stayed
in the parking lot because they heard that the sky
was falling, so they literally, yeah, they have wanted to
stay away. But also looking at this team, I mean
(08:18):
Cooper rush three thirty two completions, three hundred and fifty
four yards, one touchdown, five sacks.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
The Cowboys gave up five sacks.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
Rico'doudele running back number one, Well, he had ten carries
for twenty eight yards. And duce Vaughn Little Dukes got
up in the game man man. Yeah, four carries and
thirteen yards. But at least he got an opportunity to
get in there and play. They tried to get him
the ball a couple times. Seedee lamb, Well, what I
(08:52):
tell you going into the game.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
I told he quit him and Digs. I think they
got a pack. They went one, let's not play ball
no more. Deactivate the activated Yeah.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
Because if Nico Collins got a big touchdown that got
called back early in the game.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
And guess who was Chasable Nobody Diggs Diggs. When we
come back, we're gonna hear from coach.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
Sark talk about the Texas Longhorns as they get ready
to take on Kentucky. And oh yeah, we got a
game time for those Aggies right.
Speaker 1 (09:23):
Here on the morning kickoff on sports Radio and thirteen
hundred The Zone.

Texas Child de Audition of the Morning kick Off, Mike
Harballhard's World's Strongest Name, WWE Hall of Famer, d Mark Henry,
and of course we got our guy Khalil behind the boards.
And yesterday a lot of news was coming out.
Speaker 3 (17:40):
Of the SEC.
Speaker 2 (17:43):
Three Texas players were named to the All SEC Players
of the Week.
Speaker 6 (17:50):
John A.
Speaker 3 (17:51):
Barron was co Defensive Player of the Week.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
Seven tackles, six solo, including one sack, two tackle for losses,
and a home setting interception. John a continues to be
one of the best players in the nation, let alone
in the SEC. We also had Haydon Connor named to
the offensive line Player of the Week and we'll hear
(18:16):
from players later in the week talking about what he
means to this team and as Texas continues to roll.
They are nine to one on the season, seven to
one in the SEC. Connor allowed no sacks, no quarterback pressures,
and no tackles for loss with playing the left guard position. Defensively,
(18:38):
Alfred Collins, who is making a ton a ton of
money this year because of the way that he's starting
to play. Alfred Collins was named defensive lineman and Defensive
Player of the Week. He generated seven tackles for solo,
including one sack, two tackles for loss, and also a
(19:00):
critical fumble fumble in the fourth quarter that Michael Taff
ended up recovering. So a lot of good things are
happening for this Texas football team.
Speaker 3 (19:11):
Another good thing that is happening.
Speaker 2 (19:13):
Is we finally got announced the game time for the
rivalry being renewed between the Texas Longhorns and of course,
the Texas A and m Aggie's that kickoff is now
at six thirty. Six point thirty will be the time
for the kickoff, and it will be on ABC. Of
course you can listen to all the action with Craig Way,
(19:36):
Roger Wallace, and of course Will Matthews right here on
Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred The Zone. But yesterday Coach
Stark got an opportunity to talk to the media and
he was an emotional coach yesterday.
Speaker 3 (19:50):
And what I mean by that he this is senior week.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
This is the last time that a lot of these
players are gonna get a chance to play a regular
season game on the forty acres. And the reason why
I say regular season is because there is still the
possibility of Texas hosting a playoff game here with the
new format that is going on. But Coach Stark started
the media availability off by talking about his players and
(20:17):
of course what this week means.
Speaker 3 (20:20):
Awesome went on the road Saturday. You know, I think.
Speaker 21 (20:25):
It is really challenging, and we see it across the board,
and you know, somebody brought to my attention that we're
the only undefeated team on the road in conference play,
and so I think it speaks volumes to how difficult
it is to go on the road and win. I
credit our guys for playing the way they played, and obviously,
(20:48):
you know, defense, we had a fantastic game.
Speaker 3 (20:50):
I think John A.
Speaker 21 (20:50):
Barron was with the Alfred Collins was the defensive lineman
of the week and who I don't think is getting
near enough credit nationally for how good he's playing foot
ball right now for us, I mean, Alfred is playing
a fantastic brand of football. Uh Hayden Connor getting the
offensive Lineman of the week. I think that's now our
fourth offensive lineman that's gotten Player of the week. So
(21:11):
proud of our guys and just probably the way they're
working and and you know, as I told them today,
I think this is the biggest game of the season
coming up. You know, Kentucky's a really good football team.
They have played their best football against the best teams
they've competed against, you know, whether it be an Old
miss uh, Georgia, Tennessee, and they've played really well. I
got a ton of respect for coach Stoops and the
(21:33):
job he's done. So looking forward to the challenge and
looking forward to celebrating senior Day. You know, a lot
of these guys have done so much work for us
and have been such catalysts for our culture and what
we do, and so to celebrate them, uh, looking forward
to that and looking forward to the opportunity to play
Kentucky Saturday.
Speaker 2 (21:55):
You start to look at this team and what they
have done thus far and where they can came from,
and you have to believe that this might be one
of Sark's biggest builds in return, that this is what
he's getting. We go back to that avenging the loss
at Arkansas and then going back to the scene of
(22:18):
the crime and being able to get the dub with
a totally different football team than what they had before.
Now he's built it in his likeness and now we're
reaping the rewards and benefiting from that.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
You know how much pleasure he got out of winning
that game, because the ones that stick to you are
the ones that you can't beat or that you didn't beat. Yep,
And now he had the opportunity to exercise the theme. Yeah,
and getting that win, I think is something that's going
(22:53):
to help them to have clarity and when he can
focus and not think about man, I gotta book, I
gotta really do this, I got a scheme for this game.
Now he can he can relax and open it up
and and focus more on the future rather than the
right now right. And so one of the things that
has helped him be able to be at this level
(23:15):
has been his defense. And he was asked about how
happy he was that the way that he and PK
have built this defense.
Speaker 21 (23:24):
Well, I I love what we're doing defensively, and I'm
super proud of PK and the job he's done.
Speaker 3 (23:29):
In our entire defensive staff.
Speaker 21 (23:31):
You know, we've had a lot of continuity over there,
you know, Terry, Joseph Blake, Gideon, those guys, and we
heard a ton about our secondary a year ago and
why they weren't what they were supposed to be or
allegedly and and for them to play the way they're playing.
And then the addition, I would say if Kenny Baker,
what a great addition he's been to continue to build
(23:52):
on the defensive line, and Johnny Nansen what he's done.
Speaker 3 (23:56):
Credit to all those guys.
Speaker 21 (23:57):
You know, when when you're trying to play great defensive football,
I think it's a mindset as much as it is schematically.
Speaker 3 (24:06):
And our mindset has grown into.
Speaker 21 (24:10):
I don't think our guys believe that anyone can move
for the ball on them, that anyone's gonna score them.
And that's a beautiful thing to watch. Like even at
practice just to we're going to walk through and the
mindset of fitting to run the right way and holding
each other accountable. And those are all the little things
that that I enjoy as a head coach. You know
(24:32):
that we've grown into now as a defensive football team.
Speaker 3 (24:35):
It's been impressive. Man, it's been impressive to watch.
Speaker 1 (24:38):
And not only has it been impressive to watch, they
are trending at becoming the number one ranked defense, and
coach Sark talked about that as well.
Speaker 3 (24:50):
I love it, you know that.
Speaker 21 (24:52):
I think it's a mentality, right, and that's the way
that we go about our business. And I think the
defensive players will probably tell you, and you guys have
to ask them. But I'm very connected to those guys,
I don't, you know. I don't just gravitate to the offense.
And that's easy to do, right And I'm over there,
I'm calling the plays and whatnot, but I'm I'm really
(25:13):
I probably have better to some degree, better relationships with
the defensive players. On our team then sometimes the offensive
players because I go overboard to to make sure that
I have those relationships and so to watch those guys
play the way they're.
Speaker 3 (25:26):
Playing right now, I'm I'm.
Speaker 21 (25:29):
Like I said, very proud of them, very proud of
our coaching staff of what they're doing, and they they're
doing it at a high level. And you know, we
talked a lot of this season going into it about
getting the ball back, and then what they're doing at
such a high level of getting the ball back and
taking the ball back for offense, they're stopping the run,
(25:49):
they're minimizing the explosive plays, they're getting after the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (25:52):
They're just doing a lot of really cool.
Speaker 21 (25:54):
Things, and they're doing it in a way where they're
celebrating it with one another, and that's that's a joy
to watch as well.
Speaker 1 (26:01):
Hard I can see exactly what he's saying, like, what's
the most important thing to an offensive coordinator or play caller?
Speaker 3 (26:12):
Good defense?
Speaker 5 (26:13):
You know what?
Speaker 1 (26:15):
Because he wants another opportunity, give me the ball again,
like people would think, oh no, it's like throwing a touchdown.
Oh handed it off. Call him real nice play, get
a schemes on the end, around maybe a running play. No,
the more offensive possessions that you can get, the more
(26:35):
points you're going to score. So I can see him saying,
you know what I'm I'll gravitate to how defensive players
and if I'm a defensive player recruit, and I see
what they're doing, what Texas is doing, why would you
not want to come play here?
Speaker 5 (26:54):
You see the guys like Johnny Barren.
Speaker 1 (26:56):
Who came back and we've talked about him at nauseum
about developing and coming back. Texas is developing guys that
are four or fifth round picks and making them first
second round picks, giving them We didn't Texas didn't do
that before. I almost said week because you always messing
with Texas didn't do that before. And that was one
(27:19):
of the reasons why kids went to Alabama right in Georgia, right,
they wanted they wanted one hundred chance that was never
one hundred percent.
Speaker 5 (27:31):
They wanted a high chance.
Speaker 1 (27:32):
That they were going to get developed to be an
NFL player, And that's what started in his offense and
defensive coaching staffs are doing.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
Yeah, and that's been very very interesting to watch. You
mentioned john Ay Barron, but another guy that is making
some ways is Alfred Collins. And everybody was up at
arms when both Davis left. And the reason why people
were up in arms up when both Davis left was
because of the development. We saw a chance for Byron
(28:01):
Murphy and to and Andre Sweat to get better, to have
that opportunity. So Kenny Baker now is the d line coach,
and the question was brought up about Kenny Baker can
he help these these two defensive linemen come out and
play better. But you see what Alfred Collins has been
able to do.
Speaker 21 (28:22):
Like anything, you know, with opportunity comes responsibility, and I
think Alfred has assumed the responsibility of the opportunity. Vernon
is the same way. You know, they're both playing at
a really high level. It sometimes it's more difficult to
remain consistent when you know, oh, well, I'm gonna get
(28:42):
my you know, ten twelve, fifteen plays. But when you
know you're getting counted on for thirty five forty plays
a game, you tend to lean into. I got to
do all the little things right, and whether it's your hands,
whether it's your footwork, whether it's fitting to run a
certain way, staying in your gap, whatever looks like and
so I think Alfred sees the moment and sees the opportunity,
(29:05):
and you know, totally like, I can't tell you guys enough.
I know I'm speaking a lot on because I'm reminiscing
on a lot of these guys and knowing it senior day,
but like so proud of him from where he's come
to get to this point. And I remember doing press conferences,
(29:26):
you know, three four years ago talking about Alfred.
Speaker 3 (29:28):
What's the issue with Alfred Well, consistency.
Speaker 21 (29:30):
All of a sudden, now we have a really consistent
player who's very talented, and he's making a lot of
plays for us.
Speaker 2 (29:37):
And you see that those are the things, Those are
the things that you continue to look at and you
continue to believe in and you try to find because
everything is about opportunity, as coach Stark said, and you
start looking at a guy like Alfred Collins. Everybody always
talks about the upside, the upside, right, man, what would
(29:58):
he look like if he got to win where he
needed to be? Well, he's there now, and every game
you see him making a play, you see him being
part of a tip ball that someone in the back
end is intercepting. You see him putting pressure on the
quarterback and coach Shark has talked about this at nauseum.
(30:19):
A lot of times the pressure is more important than
the sack, and you're getting and disrupting the play. It's
kind of like people going after Quinn. Everybody's looking at
Quinn talking about he's not throwing the deep ball. Well,
he does when the deep ball opportunity is resent, and
(30:39):
a lot of times it's setting it up by being
able to dump the ball off to the back or
hitting gunner him across the middle on a crossing route.
Juan Davis being an impactful type of player. Some of
the things that we see are not part of the
entire story.
Speaker 3 (30:58):
You're watching the game but.
Speaker 1 (31:00):
Not truly understanding what opportunities are there.
Speaker 5 (31:04):
When we come back from this break, I want to
share so much.

Speaker 6 (41:24):
It's been a lot of fun. I appreciate it, guys,
no problem.
Speaker 3 (41:27):
Let's get back to the gridiron man.
Speaker 2 (41:29):
There's a lot going on with this Texas football team
and a lot of scrutiny still out there for one
Quin Yours. Texas is sitting at nine and one overall,
seven and one in the Big Twelve, sitting at the
top and can still control their own destiny. But a
lot of folks are still thinking that Quinn Yours is
(41:49):
not the answer at this particular point in the season.
I'm like, what are y'all talking about?
Speaker 3 (41:54):
Number one?
Speaker 2 (41:55):
Number two, Texas has lost three games in the last
two seasons with him, and he won a Big Twelve championship.
He was a big twelve MVP in the game. You
got into the playoffs and you're still playing good football.
Am I missing something here, Joe.
Speaker 7 (42:12):
No, I think what you're talking about is on point.
I think you know, we can look at you know
the fact that Texas is nine to one. You know,
the Longhorns with Quen Yours at quarterback haven't lost a
road game, true road games since you know, still Water
in twenty twenty two. They're winning and stuff like that.
You know he's protected the ball, yep. But I think
(42:34):
you can also assess, you know, what this team is
trying to do, and in scale, what quinn ewrs has
done to maybe you know, an SEC championship game or
a first round playoff game and wonder, okay, you're doing
this against Arkansas. You know, you hit your wide open
Matthew Goldens, but you missed your open Matthew Goldens.
Speaker 6 (42:52):
You miss your Isaiah Bonds.
Speaker 7 (42:54):
You know, you you look at some of the stuff
he did against Florida and you're like, wow, five touchdowns,
But you know it's it's a flash. It's kind of
been a flash in the pan and not a consistent burn.
So I don't think there's I think individual game to
game criticism on Quinn. Some of it is like an
odd Quinn fatigue. But at the same time, like when
(43:15):
you're looking forward to where this team could and once
to go, you have to think.
Speaker 6 (43:20):
About, Okay, how do you win at the highest level?
Speaker 7 (43:23):
It requires Quinn Yewers to be playing at its best,
and you know, especially say you have to get a
go against the defense like Ole misses in the first
round or something like that, or you have to play
Tennessee again, or play Tennessee like a hypothetical SEC championship,
Like you have to have the best players playing their best,
and that's not been something that's consistent. And I think
that's where a lot of the frustration is with Quinn.
(43:44):
It's like how high is this ceiling? Have we tapped
it already? Is that ceiling high enough to get Texas
where they want to go? I think there's a lot
of questions and justifiable ones about that.
Speaker 1 (43:55):
Joe Quinn is I don't feel like as a real
strong issue right now. I mean, decision making processes can
always be faster. But the thing that troubles me a
little bit is putting the ball on the carpet. And
once again, uh Jad and Blue put put the ball
on the carpet. Texas was able to recover that fumble.
(44:19):
But is there any word are you hearing anything about
Terry Wisner and the other running backs, Jered Gibson getting
more cares?
Speaker 6 (44:31):
Uh?
Speaker 7 (44:32):
You know, well, I think the fact that Sark went
back to Jaden Blue after that speaks volumes about what
they think about him. We've seen times when you know,
Jaden Blue got thrown at the doghouse like two bubbles.
It's like, Okay, you're gonna get you're gonna get passes,
but we're.
Speaker 6 (44:50):
Not gonna hand you the ball out of the backfield.
They went back to him, uh, and and he answered
the call he had running the football, you know. And
in the conventional way.
Speaker 7 (45:02):
There, there's still I think what they're gonna do is
they're still going to rotate Blue, They're still going to
rotate Wisener. They're going to try to get as much
for that running back position as possible. But you've seen
instances where they trust Jared Gibson more and more. They
trusted him with that fourth down against Florida, they trusted
him with a fourth down against Arkansas. They're trying to
get him up to speed on a lot of different things,
(45:22):
just because he provides a little bit more of a
physicality o the backs don't have. So you know this,
I'm kind of starting to realize how annoying running back
guy by committee can be, especially for a full season,
because you're like, who's gonna step up and take control?
And you know when you have it by committee, nobody
really does. But they're gonna have to use all these guys,
(45:45):
and you know, even Jayden Blue putting the ball on
the carpet.
Speaker 6 (45:48):
They're gonna have to coach that out of them.
Speaker 7 (45:49):
They're gonna have to make sure he works on ball
security because they can't afford to just, you know, have
him wither away on the bench.
Speaker 6 (45:55):
At this point, with the way the depth chart looks.
Speaker 1 (45:57):
We're talking to Joe Cook of Inside Texas. Make sure
you go and follow him at Joseph Cook eighty nine
and give him some pleasantries for having hit the birth
of his the beautiful daughter.
Speaker 3 (46:09):
You can check it out as well. But Joe, I
wanted to talk about this.
Speaker 2 (46:12):
Man because Jahday Barron continues to play at an unbelievable clip.
You see what Alfred Collins has been doing. Obviously the
linebackers have played at an elite level. You look at
this Texas defense and I'm going back to what you
mentioned a little bit ago about Quinn. Yours defense is
(46:32):
going to win championship as long as Quinn's not turning
over the football or as Mark says, the running backs
not putting it on the carpet. But this defense is
a championship level defense. They answered the bell every single time.
And I can remember not too long ago the secondary
(46:52):
was one of the biggest weaknesses from this football team.
Speaker 5 (46:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (46:57):
Absolutely, And one of the really cool things about this
is that it's largely a similar cast of characters as
it was last year. Like Jday, Baron Malik Muhammad, Jalen Gilbo,
Michael taff all those guys were here last year.
Speaker 6 (47:12):
Derek Williams was on the team. I know he's out
for the year.
Speaker 7 (47:15):
I know they added Andrew Bakuba from from the Portal,
so he's a little bit of a newcomer to it.
Speaker 6 (47:21):
But like so many of.
Speaker 7 (47:22):
These guys, even Gavin Holmes, so many of these guys
were on that past defense last year. And you know,
you can look at row statistics and be upset at them.
You can look at row statistics and think, oh, that's
not you know, the full story. But a lot of
people are gonna look at you know, one hundred in
past defense and you know the way the Sugar Bowl
went and think certain ways about the past defense and
(47:46):
a lot of those same players have turned you know,
this secondary into one of the best in the country,
if not need best in the country. And it's led
by Jaday Baron. You know that he made that interception
that he had. It was kind of like that player
earlier in the year where he kind of tails off
of his man he finds work elsewhere because he knows
his guy's not going to get the football, and you know,
(48:07):
he was in the right place at the right time
after a little bobble by the Arkansas player, gets that
sack on right before halftime, shuts down any chance of
Arkansas trying to take take more points before the whistle.
Just makes so many different plays that and as part
of a secondary who all make a ton of different plays,
it's been really refreshing and just a great story to
(48:29):
see how they've turned it around in one year. And
you know, last year it was there were NFL players
in a lot of different spots you had Jalen Ford,
you had Ryan Watts even and then of course he
had the two defensive tackles.
Speaker 6 (48:42):
Maybe they put too much.
Speaker 7 (48:43):
Focus on those defensive tackles. I mean, it's it's hard
to say that use those guys when they earned that exactly.
But now you you you're trying to find a weak
spot on this defense, and even if you find one,
there are ten other guys around him are there making
the play, Like Alfred Collins. That guy gets a little
bit free through a lane, Wilfred Collins leaps and strips
(49:07):
the ball, and Michael pass right there to make up
for you know, a guy getting through a lane and
Collins making a play. So it's just eleven man. It's
an eleven man effort that's been fantastic all year. Starting
deserves credit for it, and Pete Wakowski deserves a ton
of credit for it getting that defense turned around.
Speaker 1 (49:27):
There is Joe Cook of Inside Texas. Make sure you
follow them at Joseph Cook eighty nine.

Major League Baseball has started its award season and let
me just tell you no surprise that Paul's Schemes was
named National League Rookie of the Year. And it's kind
of interesting because both leagues gave the Rookie of the
Year to pitchers. Paul Skins came up to the big
(56:10):
leagues just after being drafted number one overall, win eleven
and three with an ERA of one ninety six. They
had twenty three starts one hundred and seventy strikeouts. So
it's been very impressive to watch Paul Skins and what
he's been able to achieve. Luis gil becomes the National
(56:35):
I mean American League Rookie of the Year, winning fifteen
games with a three zero.
Speaker 3 (56:42):
Point five ERA.
Speaker 1 (56:44):
He had one hundred and seventy one strikeouts and one
hundred and fifty one innings and both of those guys
Rookie of the Year and this week will continue to
give out awards. Now Paul Skins is in a unique position.
Speaker 2 (56:59):
Paul Skins is also up for MVP of I mean,
excuse me of Cy Young Award as well. So Paul
Skins is one of those guys that you continue to
look at and you wonder how good can he truly
truly be. He was the second Pirate to win National
(57:20):
League Rookie of the Year four hundred and ninety eight
days after the draft, so you start to look at
who he is and what he's up against. You say, Okay,
how is he gonna rank nationally or or in the
history of the game. And he's one of the most
dominant players to ever walk on the baseball field. Now,
(57:43):
they also will give out manager of the Year. I
believe that will be given out before. What do you
mean they never gave out the manager of the year before? No, no, no,
they have, but I'm saying it's going They're given out
different awards every single day. Okay, so he just gave
out the Rookie of the Year. This week it'll be me,
and today they will give out manager of the Year.
Speaker 5 (58:05):
Who's your pick?
Speaker 3 (58:10):
I would have to go with what I've seen from
aj Hinch.
Speaker 2 (58:13):
Actually, actually, no, no, the winner erase that the winner
should be the Kansas City Royals manager because what Kansas
City was able to do this year after being one
of those teams that was always drafting at the top
of the draft, that's how you go and get a
Bobby with Junior.
Speaker 5 (58:34):
I was just gonna say, don't wouldn't Bobby with Jr?
Speaker 6 (58:36):
Have something to do with that man that he did?
Speaker 1 (58:39):
He's like the Patrick Mahomes of baseball, and and he
is one of the guys that is up for MVP
of the season as well for the American League, but
I would give it to Matt Kutara, the manager of
the Kansas City Royals.
Speaker 2 (58:55):
The National League. You have the Mets manager Carlos Mendoza.
You also have Pat Murphy of the Brewers and Mike
Schlink from the Padres.
Speaker 1 (59:06):
So we'll find that out today. We'll find out who
those winners are tonight. Rather when we come back be
our number two. We're gonna check on the New York
state of mind.
Speaker 2 (59:17):
I know a lot of craziness going on in New York,
and I'm gonna tell you why I am not liking
what I'm seeing right here on the morning kickoff on
Sports Radio and thirteen hundred The Zone
