The Texas High School Coaches Association had their annual meetings
this past weekend where all the college coaches get on
a panel and talk and share wisdom and talk about
the way the game is changing and everything that goes
along with it, And obviously the key speaker for us
is always going to be Coach Sark. Coach Sark got

a chance to talk to a lot of the folks.

In the media.

He had his one on ones and a lot of
conversation was done, but he started it off as he
grabbed the microphone sitting next to one Joey Maguire.

I think, first and foremost, Joey and I are good.
We're sitting next to each other, y'allso we're all good.

So that's that's to me. It's something that it's all about.
That to me is what being able to poke at
each other. And Joey said it at his press conference
at SI I mean, at the Big twelve Media Days.
He was talking about Coach Sark and what he means
and how good he believes this Texas football team is

going to be. But you know, as well as I do,
you had to make sure that you got that little
job in.

Yeah, I think that Coach Sark was just probably like
was just looking for him.

and not okay, right, you know, the last thing you

and make sure that they got out in front of
it and got it out of the way, is the

seen Dave Campbell's Texas Football lately, Well, the magazine is

people are a little upset with Dave Campbell's Texas Football.

But coach Stark was asked during these press conference press conference,
what it's like, what it has, has it meant to
be a coach?

What goes into coaching?

Speaker 3 (05:17):
I think, first and foremost as coaches, we bear a
major responsibility when it comes to the development of young
people in our society and how we how do we
develop them. We develop them a lot of them through sport.
But it's not just through sport, whether it's on the field,
on the quarter or in the pool. It's through sport

(05:38):
in the discipline and the commitment that it takes to
be successful in that sport. But the life lessons that
are learned through sport, I think are what ultimately carry
our young people into society where they can go be successful.
And so it's a great responsibility and those that choose
to be part of this professionciate all that they do,

(06:01):
and you know, we get a small small percentage of
those that come on and play for us. And so
those that do it at the high school level, you know,
just don't lose sight of the fact that you're impacting
society and the competitive nature and the competitive spirit that's
needed at the high school level. To win in the
state of Texas is one thing, but to win in
life is a whole other thing. So very appreciative of

all that that do that are part of this profession
and contribute to our society.

Speaker 5 (06:29):
Well, I hard that, truly and honestly, wholeheartedly believe that
that would be great as a secondary option, because the
number one thing is I won't respect the game and
I want to win. Right, then the byproduct of having
a successful system and having responsible mentorship and coaching and

leadership leads to having good men.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
So, like you're vibe, is the win. Listen, the standard
is a standard.

Speaker 6 (07:03):
Right.

I don't care how good you are a preacher. I
don't care how good of a cook you are. Right,
your job is to win those games.

And then if you can affect these young men in
the process, wonderful.

But like we need to stop with that.

What we need to stop with the leading with the
we're trying to make successful people I'm not trying to
birth the new president.

I want a national football.

I know that sound bad, No it doesn't, actually it
does not.

But all those people that love football like I do,
they want to see Texas holding that.

They got parents at home that's supposed to be raising

want you to make him a good football player, a champion,

was talking about what it's like to call plays and
being that type of head coach where you take yourself

away from certain situations.

But that's why he made some of the changes that.

You know, one of the advantages for me, I definitely
have a real connection with our players because I'm I'm
in and around them every single day. I'm coaching these guys,
I'm installing plays, I'm around them, We're talking game plans,
I'm doing those things. So I think from a connection standpoint,
that helps. I think on game day of trying to
manage the game and control the game of when you

want to speed up, maybe when you want to slow down,
you know, when you go forward all fourth down, when
you don't the impact that that can have on your
team if you make it, if you don't make it
feel position with with the defense, things of that nature.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
So that's obviously very helpful.

Speaker 3 (09:38):
I think one of the areas where it can be
difficult is trusting those guys on defense, you know, because
if I'm trying to make adjustments on the offensive side
of the ball between series, it's having trust in the
defensive coaches that they've got a good grasp of what
we're doing and if a timeouts needed, why you know
what that situation looks like.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
Things of that nature.

Speaker 3 (09:59):
And so I think to point is like, for me,
it's great having Will Muschamp back, a guy who's been
a head coach twice in the Southeastern Conference.

Speaker 5 (10:08):
The deflection like, let's not go to the defense like
a lot of the big talk right now are these
big time sports writers and ex football quarterbacks and former
coaches who are saying that this is the time for
coach Stark to have his best year calling plays like

I mean, I'm not making this up. I'm not saying
something negative. I want to see coach Sark succeed too,
and it's going to happen. I believe this is the year.

restraint in order slashing junction against the NCAA to let
him play a fifth season for the Five for five.
As we told you before, most of the five for
five is going to effect the Class of twenty twenty
seven on. But there are some guys that have now
thrown their name in the hat. We've heard about it

in basketball with Kendall Weaver and Jordan Pope. Now we
have Cole Hudson, offensive lineman for the University of Texas.
But the one thing about one Cole Hudson. Cole Hudson
went to camp with an NFL team. Cole Hudson has

already participated in the Room Cookies mini camps.

After the draft, he went to.

Camp with the Cowboys and the Cleveland Browns and was
released by both of them. On July the ninth, an
Ohio judge granted twenty four men's and women's college basketball
players eligibility. They were suing for eligibility. Now that the
information is there about the five for five, he filed

an injunction on Friday in the Travis County Court.

Now, Coach Stark, being at.

The Texas High School Coaches Association meeting, was asked about
Cole Hudson and the possibility of him coming back to
the forty.

I think with Cole situation, obviously we were monitoring it
and I don't know where it's going to go. You know,
I think we've all seen over the past few years,
there's been a lot of lawsuits that have been filed
and piggybacking off of other lawsuits a go forth.

Guy with a lot of experience, played a lot of
football for us, and you know, He's a guy that
that unfortunately didn't get drafted, and so he puts himself
in a bit of a different situation than maybe most

point is like, why are we continuing to let this
happen as as individuals, as schools, as coaching staffs. Is
it that big of a difference for you that you
think that person is going to lead you to the
promised Land. There's only one team that wins at the
end of the year, only one, and you're not guaranteed
to be the one hoisting that trophy at the end.

But is that the reason why these basketball.

Schools continue to go out and try to go get
guys from lithe Wayne and overseas that have already played Yes, professional, yeah,

I don't see that. You're not These aren't skilled players,
right Like, if those guys were that good, they would

But one of the opponents that Texas will have this
year is UTSA. And if you know anything about UTSA, obviously,
Jeff Trailer is one of the best coaches being there.

Speaker 2 (31:41):
He's been very consistent in his work.

Speaker 1 (31:44):
He was a great high school coach, which is why
he's got a big part of the Texas High School
Coaches Association.

Speaker 2 (31:52):
And he got a chance to talk yesterday and One
of the things that he talked about.

Speaker 1 (31:56):
Was the fact of nil playing a fact, and of
course the transfer portal and his thoughts on how many
times you should be able to transfer.

Speaker 10 (32:09):
It was nice to only have the one transfer portal.
I feel a lot better about our team because of
the young men we brought in. I had a relationship
with every one of them except for three. Like I
knew I was losing Patrick Overmeyer and Devin McEwan. I
have a great relationship with those players. They still played
in the bowl game. They helped us win a bowl.

(32:31):
I'm grateful for those young men, but I knew they
were leaving. I knew there was gonna be one transfer portal,
so I knew to get moving. We knew there was
not one of them in May, so we knew this
was gonna be our roster. So we got to coach
a lot differently this spring. We probably have the last
two years. You weren't negotiating with young men during springball

(32:54):
when you want to put them in push up position
or a few more gassers.

Speaker 6 (33:00):
There wasn't. You weren't worried about all that kind of stuff.
It's something else. Changes will adjust again.

Speaker 10 (33:06):
But I've been really excited the last two years with
how we're slowly getting this thing more manageable because you know,
the fans, the one that we all forget about.

Speaker 6 (33:18):
The product on the field needs to be great now.

Speaker 10 (33:20):
The players are important too, and those kids staying in
a place and get a degree and all those things
are super important, but the fans are important, all right.
We want to put a good product on the field,
And the last two years I haven't felt real good
about the product Jeff Traylor and the road runs from
the field, honestly, whereas the first four years I felt

(33:40):
really good about our product. And when the season's over,
I want to put a good product out there on
the field. And I think the rules we put in
place are going to help all coaches and players put
a better product on the field.

Speaker 1 (33:52):
And that's the one thing too that we talk about
Mark is a lot of these schools like a UTSA,
or of Texas State or UTEP or UTRGV Rice, all
of these schools are being affected by the transfer portal
and a lot of those guys go out and put

(34:12):
up great numbers and then other schools see it and
they get a chance. We need that, We need that
on our think exactly, so in those particular moments, you
start to understand what it looks like. But now also
in high school they're dealing with nil and Coach Traylor
was talking about how it affects high school recruiting as well.

Speaker 6 (34:35):
I just don't see how that can be good.

Speaker 10 (34:38):
I don't and I'm sure I'm going to be frowned
upon for my recruits hearing me say all this. I
just don't think that's good. I'm against it personally. I
think Texas high school football and is purity. We need
to try to keep it as pear as we possibly can.
And there's just so much to be gained by having
a great Texas high school experience and then getting your
opportunity to go make money.

Speaker 6 (35:00):
So I would be against that.

Speaker 2 (35:01):
Well, I disagree.

Speaker 5 (35:03):
I feel like in high school, if you set parameters
and you set a standard of rules that apply to
everybody and nobody is.

Speaker 2 (35:14):
Exempt from, then you're all right.

Because if you say it's a local business, the car
dealership in town, the newspaper, somebody that says, you know what,
we got an outstanding athlete or a couple outstanding athletes,
like they're gonna market our company in the town, then

you should be able to get that money. And if
you have a state sponsor like HB. AGB is not
in every town, right, you know it's not in Silsby.
You know we don't have HB in Silsby. But if
a national they send Tony wanted to mister butts down

and San Antonio.

Wanted to give a Salesby kid an endorsement deal, an
NIL deal, you should be able to get it. You
have a problem with that.

shouldn't be able to exceed assert That's the problem is
that you can't put parameters on that. That's why not
because it's wide open. That's what I'm saying. You open
that box up, you open Pandora's box. In this situation now,
as a parent of a kid that I think would
be great for n L NIL opportunities one, I'm down

with it. But in the reality of it all you
start looking at it and what is to your point,
what is the product that you're endorsing, what is the
the payment out of it? And does it affect your
amateur status?

There is no amateur status? Why should be?

Does everybody keep saying that there should be an amateur
status for high school students.

Speaker 2 (37:05):
All you got to do is say nothing can exceed
ten thousand dollars. But it's singular, or is that? That's
what I'm saying, Like, where is the line being drawn
with the rules?

That's why I just said the rules you gotta say
at standards again, there are none at this particular point,
And that's what I'm saying.

It's the same thing in college football. Why are you
arguing a point with me that don't need arguing.

We're not We're not anything about that being. We're saying
the same thing. But I said with the college level,
there's no parameters in college. He's talking about high school.
But the same thing. There's no parameters if we do
it right now, there's no rules mark that says you

can only give me that.

It's the same thing in college. There's no rule. UIL
has rules for everything.

All they gotta do is have all the top coaches
sit in the room and say, hey, this is a
short meeting, what's the hot what's the number, and you
know what we're doing.

We're going to court because you're stopping me from being
able to make money. Why do you think quinn Ewers
left the state of Texas to go to Ohio State
because he wasn't allowed to make money on nil, so
he forego his senior year of high school to go
make money and then came to the University of Texas.

That's why there's got to be rules and regulations for this,
and that is why Jeff Traylor is stating.

Eligibility that Old Hudson is trying to get an injunction
to play one more season at the University of Texas,
and we just finished a conversation about the transfer portal
only having one transfer portal window and of course the
nil compensation for high school athletes in the state of Texas.

The Texans will start training camp tomorrow and we'll talk
about that in the next segment, but right now, well,
Texas will be talking about we will be talking about Tennessee.
Texas plays Tennessee on September the twenty sixth, the first
SEC game of the season. They will take on Oklahoma
October the second in Dallas, and they will also play

Missouri this year on November the seventh at Missouri All
Road Games.

This is the first year they do.

Speaker 1 (40:50):
Not play Kentucky, but will Stein is taking over for
Kentucky as the head coach as Stoops was relieved of
his due Dudies. But the story is bigger than that mark.
The story is bigger because of the fact that over
the last few seasons, the SEC has not been a
part of the party as we're used to seeing it.

And Paul Finbaum had brought this up at the beginning
of the meetings yesterday. And this is what Paul, your
best friend, Paul Finbaum has to say.

What is the biggest headline coming into the SEC.

Speaker 8 (41:29):
From your perspective, there's must oxygen.

As Lane Kiffen.

Took out of every single talk show host in America.
The biggest story for me is can the SEC. I
can't believe I'm saying this end this long drought in
the National Championship game. They've missed the last three years
they have not won.

The Big Ten has won.

And for somebody who is considered an SEC lever, this
has been tough having the Big Ten rub our nose
in it.

Speaker 2 (41:58):
Now, I think it's about time we changed the direction
and rubs their nose in it.

I'm with it. Yep. I think he's right.

Like, you know, the the pride of the SEC should
you know, take over and there's opportunities for SEC teams
to hand the big ten losses.

Texas, Ohio State, I mean you, Oklahoma has this chance.
Like so there's a lot of teams that are LSU
is going to have their chance, like all of these
teams that have big ten teams booked on their schedule,
do the right thing.

Yep, Oklahoma will take on Michigan.

Speaker 1 (42:45):
I believe at the Big House this year, at the
Big House, at the Big House, Texas got a chance
to go there before and handle theirs.

But here's the thing for me.

You look at the SEC and the conversation that is
out there, you start to look around. And I mentioned
the new coaches Will Stein in Kentucky. But Missouri was
another team that a lot of folks thought could turn
the corner. They had their ups and downs. Tennessee with
Josh Heipel, what is he going to do at the

quarterback position? Because there are some things that are going
to be missing. But the biggest storyline today that we're
going to focus on and we'll have some sound from
it for it tomorrow is Brent Vinibles Oklahoma.

Speaker 2 (43:31):
Oklahoma. They brought John Mattier. He is the quarterback.

Speaker 1 (43:34):
He's coming back off of that hand injury, did some
things to it and now he's ready to go. But
what do you believe Oklahoma's ceiling is coming into this season?
If Matier can stay healthy and being as experienced as.

Speaker 5 (43:50):
He is, I think they're a ten nine wins season.
So they're going to be in the running at the
end of it all because they have to. Like there's
you know, Josh Heipel's got some wiggle room. You know,
Lane Kiffin, he's got some wiggle room. So a lot

(44:13):
of these teams in the SEC coach sark he's got
wiggle room. But not in Oklahoma. Yep, not in Oklahoma.
There there's people that it's grumbling's already. Well, they were
a ten win team there. You know what I'm saying
last season, they wasn't you got to win to keep
your job up. And now you you start to look

at what's going to happen with this team. You made
a different change and coordinator. You bring in Ben Arbuncle.

Speaker 1 (44:42):
You got materir, you got the things that you need
and your defense has been solid. That's one thing that
you can't say about Oklahoma is that he has made
his defense where it is, it is formidable. You gotta
stay locked in and understanding what it is. But what
is next for them? Are they gonna be able to
win ten games again? Are they gonna be able to

(45:04):
block up front? Because we talk about Texas's offensive line,
but they need some work on Oklahoma's offensive line as well.

Speaker 2 (45:13):
Well they've done.

Speaker 5 (45:13):
They had the best recruiting on the offensive line of
anybody in college football, Like they had like three five
star guys, So I'm I'm curious to see what those
Well two of them come next year, but they got
one this year and they got two coming next year.
So the future is bright. But the guys right now

is the you know, I can't say it's a problem.
They're the ones that are on the hot seat because
you don't want a freshman to come in next year
and steal your thunder right, and.

Speaker 2 (45:47):
Then you also now you transition. I said it.

Speaker 1 (45:50):
The very first game of the SEC this season, Texas
goes to Tennessee. Josh Heipel still trying to figure out
who's gonna be his quarterback. You got Jim Knowles coming
in as the coordinator who was with Penn State and
Ohio State, and we remember Jim Knowles when he was
at Oklahoma State as the defensive coordinator. And then you

start to look and say, all right, Josh Hipel, guy
that understands the quarterback position. But does he have enough
proven at quarterback George McIntyre or Faison Brandon. Don't know,
don't know if they're gonna have enough, don't know if
they're gonna be able to do something. But they got
three games leading into the Texas game to kind of

(46:34):
get that figured out. So I'm gonna be listening to
what Josh Hipel has to say about the quarterback position.

Speaker 2 (46:40):
Who are you the most worried about in the SEC?

Speaker 5 (46:43):
And I'll tell you right off the bat, I want
to see what LSU is gonna look like because in
the offseason they got difference makers, like Texas has difference
makers recruiting wise as well, guys that they brought in.

Speaker 1 (47:03):
Into Portal Well, they had for they're number one class
transfer class in the nation. They had forty forty one
different players are now on that roster. With Lane Kiffin
forty one. Now the question is can they all play together?

(47:23):
Can they mesh? Obviously, when you get an older group
and you bring it in all these different guys, you
expect the maturity level to kind of resonate. But these
guys are coming into Louisiana and ready to turn it up.
But it is Lane Kiffin ready to take that next step.
He felt like it's different. He's already under scrutiny using

the playing team, playing for illegal stuff whatever, taking his
family on there.

Speaker 2 (47:48):
I mean, he's the head coach.

Speaker 5 (47:50):
If I if I want to go to Disneyland, I'm
taking my family Disneyland on the exactly what you're gonna
do about it, as I'm coming right back as soon
as our day is done.

I'm not spending the night there. We're back. Oh you
pay for a few? That dude is making how much
money you making? He's making a lot. He's making a lot.
You can pay for a few, what thirty grand?

So when you start looking at that and what the
expectations are when you look at this team, I expect
LSU to be one of those problem teams.

Trinidad Chambers, who some believe maybe the best quarterback in
this conference not named Arch Manning. So you start to
look around and understand who they are. This is something
that that you definitely got to pay attention to. It's

ole missing to them at home.

This is why I am not as worried about other
teams unless you talk about out their defense first. Somebody
that can affect Arch Manning and affect this running game
that Texas has tried to rebuild, That's that's what that's

that's the team I'm scared of. Everybody else if it's
offensively going against Texas's defense, I'm not as I'm not
as worried about those teams because I think that Texas
defense is going to be one that we're going to
talk about for a long time because they got pieces,
and they got elite pieces, and they're playing in a

system that's attacking. Texas has not played an attacking defense
since Will musch Chant left. Yeah, it's been a while
since we've seen what we're about to see.

Well, my thought process is this is going to be.

A very very competitive, high stakes league once again. And
I believe that some from this conference will be back
in the National Titles Championship game. I do believe that,

And as we sit and look at the Houston Texans,
we talked about them last week, Mark about the expectations
coming into the season. Are they going to be able
to change the narrative of this football team. This is
a team that finds a way to get it done,
mostly on the defensive side. They went through all the

obstacles that they needed to go through last season with
a beat up offensive line, a shell shocked CJ.

Stroud. But now you're back.

Speaker 1 (51:58):
Now you're back to getting on on the field and
being able with another of some new players on the
running game. And what the expectations are when you look
at this football team is greatness. I believe that they're
going to be one of the teams that has a
great chance of participating in the AFC Championship Game, let
alone possibly getting themselves to the Super Bowl.

Speaker 5 (52:22):
Well, you said two things, but it's really four things.
I didn't really list CJ. Stroud and being shell shocked
as one of my reasons for the lack of productivity
and success for Houston.

Speaker 2 (52:42):
I thought the offensive.

Speaker 5 (52:43):
Line number one had to get better, had to have
more cohesion. Secondly, those wide receivers have got to be healthy.
Their wide receivers and crucial times and for the season
were never there. Dell was gone, Collins got hurt at

least seven games, like so like that was the next issue,
the running game upgrade.

Speaker 2 (53:17):
They got a running game upgrade, which is going to
be very helpful.

Speaker 5 (53:22):
And then I guess if you're nitpicking, and I'm not
in the business of picking knits, if that's such.

A thing.

Speaker 5 (53:32):
Where it is now, but CJ. Stroud being shell shock
is grasping at straws a little bit. I think that
the fact that he couldn't stand up right and he
was other fighting people for the handoff from the other team,
not his own team, was the number one thing. And

the wide receivers, and now you have an upgraded running back.
I think that Houston is going to It's not the
first last or worst situation.

Speaker 2 (54:06):
Or worse the first situation, because they weren't last.

Speaker 5 (54:11):
I think that they had enough improvement in the offseason
to win a Super Bowl. But it's gonna come down
to can they be healthy. They are a snake bitten team.
They have to figure out a way to get it
done though. And for me, defense defense. You win with defense,
agree boom in the top half, but you gotta have

offense to finish those drives. And it's just great that
the defense can get you there to a certain point
or whatever is going on with it.

But when you get to.

That that Promised Land, you got to be able to
have guys that are that can score.

You gotta be able to You play Denver, you play
New England, you have got to score twenty eight points.

And with their defense, if they scored twenty eight, very
likely they're gonna stop you from scoring twenty four. Well,

futures and the over under, as we talked about before
with them is nine and a half, same as the
Dallas Cowboys. But you look at them, they're plus eighteen

hundred to win the Super Bowl. The team that is
favored to win the Super Bowl is the La Rams
at plus five point fifty they're followed. The Rams are
followed by Buffalo and the Ravens at plus one thousand,
Seattle at plus eleven hundred, the Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots,
Kansas City Chiefs are each at plus sixteen hundred, and

you've got the Chargers at seventeen hundred and the.

Texans at plus eighteen hundred. I will take the Texans
over the Chargers, the the New England Patriots. I don't
know if I'm ready to put him over the Bills

I look at them a little bit different than I
think most people look at the Houston Texans because of
what you mentioned with the defense, and I believe that
this offense is going to be way better. Tankdale looked

You know what I'm saying. How crisp he was cutting
on those routes. You went back to Houston. Before I
want to, I want to say something about what you
just said. I don't think that the Rams are even
though they're they're number one, if they signed Aaron Donald,

which is you know, feasible it could happen, like their
percentage is gonna go up even higher. And everybody's talking
about the Lebron James watch. You need to start looking
at the Aaron Donald watch as soon as Aaron If
Aaron Donald signs with the Rams, you can kiss Super

Bowl goodbye.

They winning that.

There is no offense that's gonna be able to stop
Aaron Donald in the middle and Miles Garrett on the

not get that. He was not able to get back
for the workout plan that the strength coach said for him.
Then came the twenty six and the position coach called

him and said where are you And he told them, coach,
I'm I'm still dealing with uh things related to my
mother's passing and my family. And the next day his
agent was informed that his scholarship had been terminated. And

this is after the portal is closed.

He's scheduled to graduate on time, which now that's not

get out even more over the next few days, and
it's gonna get to other students, And what if a

twenty days dealing with the death of a relative.

kill him, kill his career.
