(00:40):
He's a Hall of Fame Mark Henry. And doing this job,
we get opportunities to do a lot of special things.
And coming up here in the near future, next month,
we will have people get inducted into the Hall of
Honor at the University of Texas, And what better way
(01:02):
to start the eight o'clock hour than introducing you to
one of the thirteen members that will be inducted. And
you can go to Texas Longhorns dot com to get
the latest to buy your tickets for the ceremony. Is
none other than an NCAAA champion, a three time All American,
(01:22):
one of the most accomplished student athletes at the University
of Texas volleyball team. She's been Player of the Year,
she's been All Americans, She's been an NCAA champion. She
is the one and only Kat Bell.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
Good morning, everybody.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
You like that, you like that?
Speaker 3 (01:42):
The introduction was fire. I liked it. That was key.
That was build the audience. That was key. I like that.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
That's who left out something? What you left out very
easy to look at.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Well, I mean, I'm not gonna go there, Mark, can
we work. Let's work up to that.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
We know, Uh, she said, it's the truth. That's the truth.
Speaker 1 (02:03):
That's true. That's true.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
What's going on, cad, Good morning, morning, good morning.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
Nothing much you know here in Austin, Texas doing some
rehab and recovery right now.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
But yeah, preparing for the season coming up. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
Well, first and foremost, congratulations. That's an outstanding, outstanding honor.
I know that last year Haley Joe Eckerman got inducted
in and we had her on and so we were
excited about that. But looking at the legacy of the
University of Texas and their volleyball program, you guys pretty
(02:37):
much set the foundation to really set everything in place.
And Jared Elliott now has that thing. Roland, But talk
about when you first made the decision to come to
the University of Texas and then the legacy that you
have left and coming back and being part of all
of the excitement when it comes to Texas volleyball.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:58):
First off, Mike, I just want to say thank you
for even saying that you know about us.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
You know think you people tend to forget.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
You know, we had to go through the trench chets.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
We had to go through that.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
But it's being able to play the University of Texas
under new jeered and being amongst those girls, those prominently athletes.
It was everything, you know, I think the survival of
the fittest can get through it and the ones who
can't can't you know, so be able to do all
four years there start for him, give all everything I
ever had to, even part of the game.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
You know, my goal going there was.
Speaker 4 (03:27):
To a national championship and to be able to do that,
accomplish that was a big deal for me. So leaving
there with that ring, leaving there with all the big
twelve championships, leaven there with my t ring was the
main factor.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
It was amazing.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
One of the things that I thought was awesome other
than the fact that you know, you won a national
championship and was highly regarded as one of the better
strikers that Texas ever had, was what you did after Texas,
being able to leave and go play internationally and have
success as well, Like, uh, you you kind of wanted
(04:02):
the trendsetters for professional volleyball players leaving Texas and going abroad,
Like do you ever think about that?
Speaker 4 (04:12):
Yeah, for sure, I mean I know it, you know,
so I love this, I know it.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
You know.
Speaker 4 (04:18):
So, you know, I think the biggest thing for me
about the game was, you know, it was you know,
people can choose what.
Speaker 3 (04:24):
They want to do. Part is like playing abroad.
Speaker 4 (04:26):
You know, either you want to play overseas for the experience,
to travel, the.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
Food, or you wanna get that cash.
Speaker 4 (04:30):
And like my thing was like about probably for my family,
so be able to retire my mom my first year
going pro was everything to me. So my mom went
abroad with me, my first year in Korea, and you know,
we had to learn to lay of the land together
really quickly. And I think especially as a young adult,
you know, you're still kind of like, I mean, I'm
thirty three now, but you know, around twenty one, you
think you know everything, and now like being here now,
I'm like, can you cuss on here? Probably not, you know,
(04:55):
I ain't know nothing, please, but you know, I just
it meant it was a lot, you know, And I
think being able.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
To play a broke overseas.
Speaker 4 (05:06):
I was over there for ten years and you know,
to admit to the grind and you know, to collect
what I could and you know, come back and feed
my family and you know, be able to put my
nieces and nephews and better situations my family, better situations
as I could.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
That's what meant to me.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
You know.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
It wasn't about the traveling experience. You know, I got
a lot of that, which was great, but be able
to come back and provide and continue to provide, and
obviously staying in it long enough to group the benefits
of being able to play a professional sport now that
I love here at home.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
So yeah, I love it.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
I love it. We're talking to kat Bell. She will
be inducted into the Hall of Gunner. Long overdue, but
right on time, as they like to say. She will
be inducted into the Hall of Honor along with thirteen
other members, which is outstanding stuff. When you start to
go in with your brother and and people that you
(05:53):
competed with and was on campus doing all this stuff together,
that's that's outstanding stuff. But I wanted to ask you
this because you also had trials and tribulations and moments
at the University of Texas. I need to know what
happened when you didn't plug in your scooter.
Speaker 4 (06:14):
Oh my gosh. So, you know, Haley is one of
my oldest friendship. I know Haley since we were national
Young National team in two thousand and nine, and her
type of love is tough love, you know what I mean.
And you know Hailey was always like that mother figure
of our team. So one evening I tore my ACL
mcl miniscus almost completely, my new out money out twenty eleven,
(06:37):
and you know, I was run around campus with my
scooter and my scooter had died and going into study
Hall outside of DKR, there's a ramp and.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
I'm like oh, well, you know, my scooter died. We
got to get study.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
Hall like, can you help me, you know, bring my
scooter up the walkway, you know, And she was like no,
She's like you need to learn and tough enough because
you're here by yourself.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
What would you do? She was like, you need to
pull it up here yourself. And I was looking at her, like.
Speaker 1 (07:02):
We get up here?
Speaker 4 (07:03):
Yeah, you know I did.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
We did, We did. I pulled it up there.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
You know. She's like, see, you could do anything. I'm like,
I knew that, but you was already here.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
You know.
Speaker 4 (07:13):
I'm supposed to be healing. So I'm actually going to
see her this coming week. She's coming out to Miami
to visit me here a little bit, So be happy
to see her.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
Speaking of that, you are now playing for Miami. You're
trying to be the first. I think this is the
first time they've had this franchise in Miami if I'm
not mistakeing, right, and so tell us about that.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
So yeah, so, you know, obviously loved the expansion year.
We had six teams last year. I was fortunate enough
to be part of the Austin two time championship team
this past two years and with the expansion, Miami was
on the list and I was like, that gives me no,
I want to you know, give me a new, something new.
I wanted something different, you know, come on. So you
(07:55):
know they kind of bounced that, you know, Miami was
kind of in the works. I was like, I'm going
to be the first one on that list, and I was,
and you know, being able to go there and now
I'm one of their like franchise players, you know. So
a lot of like the marketing and stuff I kind
of go through me, which is great. It's a fresh start,
you know, and being able to like compete somewhere else
in a monkst Spanish culture who has just that natural grit,
you know, just about the competitiveness. So yeah, I'm excited
(08:18):
about that moving there. I'll be there for the probably
about the next two years, and I think i'll probably
hang them up after that, so we'll see.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
So you said you were in Austin doing some rehab
and recovery. So, uh, you had a back surgery, right.
Speaker 4 (08:32):
No, I had an I so about back in March
this past year. This year, I had the craziest thing.
I had a small intestine rupture complete rupture. Yeah, I
had no symptoms. I was going septic. They ended up
it was during the game. They ended up rushing me
to the emergency room. I was in the hospital for
about eleven days. They removed my appendix. I already had
(08:53):
an ambill coo hernia that was born with that they
removed as well, since they were already going so invasive,
and then they removed about a foot about mind Testine
went through that, dealt with that, started recovering from that,
and then we realized that the healing process was like
not healing the way it was supposed to. My my
abdominal wall wasn't connecting and it started to herniate within
the incision. So they had to go back in literally
(09:13):
last Monday, put everything back together. So we back up
piece by piece and then within a week. You know,
obviously I'm kind of back moving around doing things, so
I'm just taking my time. You know, we don't have
to start practicing until early November, so I have so
much time to recover and rehab.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
So that's where I'm at right now. Waste is wasting,
for sure. You know, I'm gonna take it.
Speaker 4 (09:31):
I'm gonna take it, so whatever it takes right, we
judged me here, judge me.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
I'm not judging nothing. I need to have some surgery
done to my tour. I have a hernia, I have
a domino and I'm I'm I don't like hospitals.
Speaker 3 (09:51):
No, I didn't even stay. I didn't even stay.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
So I'm working with I worked with the best hernie
hernia specialist here in Austin.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
He's amazing, doctor USO. He's great. He he went in,
he took his time with me.
Speaker 4 (10:01):
He cleared his schedule for me to get me in
because you know, obviously I'm want to schedule for as
like recovery time. Got me in there also University of
Texas alumni, and.
Speaker 3 (10:09):
He's the best of the best.
Speaker 4 (10:11):
He used robots and everything very very precise. And I
was in the hospital. I think my pointments around my
surgery was at seven am. I was out by twelve
and came back home. No antibiotics, just like a little
battery pack bandage which helped me. I wore for a week,
no infection, nothing like that. And it was great, Like
I can, I was back moving around within two days,
Like I say, within two days.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
It was It's good. I would definitely look into.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
That well, if I get some of that missed the
team mill, then I might be able to get in there.
But outside of that, I don't like him.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
You're gonna be sleep knocked out. Trust me, you don't know.
They're gonna be like you, Okay, what time is it?
Speaker 4 (10:44):
You're gonna go to sleep and wake up and be
like that was it and that was it, gonna be
in a wheelchair.
Speaker 3 (10:47):
You won't know.
Speaker 1 (10:48):
Kay. Before we let you go, I wanted to ask you,
what is something that a lot of people don't know
about you in your time at the University of Texas
that was so special to you.
Speaker 3 (11:01):
I will say that.
Speaker 4 (11:04):
I was such a big team player, and I guess
for those who did follow along back then, you know,
I switched multiple positions for Jared, you know, to be
able for the team to be successful.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
And I think this time and.
Speaker 4 (11:15):
Day and age, girls ain't doing that. You know, if
they're not able to play in the spot they want
to play in, they leave it, you know. And I
wanted to do whatever Jared needed me to do for
the team to be successful. I said, okay, you want
me play out. I came in as a starting outside
and then we had some issues in the middle.
Speaker 3 (11:30):
So he was like, can you play middle for us?
Speaker 4 (11:31):
And I was like, that ain't my realm, but I'm
gonna do it anyway, so that's gonna help us. And
that's where I got hurt. And then the next year
is my sophomore year, we won a championship with me
playing in the middle. And then you know, I played
middle for two years for him, and then my last
year he was like, hey, I think you should play
on the right side for me, and I'm like, if
that's what it takes where it's gets to the final four,
that's where we're going. So played right tide for him,
went to the final four, you know, So I think
(11:54):
a lot of people didn't know that, Like I was
switching around for the team.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
That was a big part of that.
Speaker 1 (11:57):
I love it. Congratulations of the success, speedy recovery. And
for those that don't know, she will be inducted into
the Hall of Honor September the eighteenth. It'll be the
night before Texas taking on uts A. You can get
your tickets at Texaslonghorns dot com. And yeah, Haley was
(12:22):
the one who told me to ask you about that.
Have a great one and congratulations and definitely get well.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
Thank you guys for having me, appreciate that.
Speaker 1 (12:35):
You're welcome there. She goes, Kat Bell
