Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back to the morning kickoff on AM thirteen hundred
The Zone, flagship station for the University of Texas, where
you can hear all the games with the voice of
the Texas Longhorns, Craig Way. But you can listen to
us Monday through Friday seven to nine am on AM
thirteen hundred The Zone and always free on the iHeartRadio app.
But Anthony, I wanted to get into this conversation. We're

(00:21):
sitting with Anthony Hill. You guys have been very special
in that defensive room. This might be one of those
defenses that everybody's gonna be talking about in a later day.
But as of right now, how excited are you to
get ready for this football season?

Speaker 2 (00:37):
I mean, it's real fun.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
We have an elite defense, got guys like Michael Taff,
Colin Simmons, Jelani McDonald. We got a lot of guys
that were ready to go out there and ready.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
To go play.

Speaker 4 (00:46):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
I was excited about Manny Muhammad as well. He's one
of those guys that when he was coming out of
high school, I kept thinking to myself, he's gonna be
one of those guys that we're gonna be talking about
at the next level. But one of my favorite is
from the two five fo Yeah, Gilannie mcdonaldi, And I'm
excited to see what he is capable of doing because

(01:08):
we don't know cause he's so athletic, and he's moved
around and he's made some adjustments and he's been here,
he's been there.

Speaker 4 (01:14):
What is it about him that makes him so special?

Speaker 3 (01:17):
He's he's so clatable. I mean he does a lot
of different things. For the defense, he been playing in
a box a little bit, he plays up top, play
some cover three high. So he does a great job
of being adjustable and being clastre boy and can play
it in a lot of different spots.

Speaker 4 (01:28):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
And another guy that I thought, it's kind of like
yourself when you bum when you came out of high school.
I was like, this dude probably can go to the NFL.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
Colin Simmons is another one of those guys. And he
we got the quote, uh, we play it as a
drop all the time. Lady ask him why he switched
to number one. He said, because I am the one yea,
And so his mindset is a little bit different.

Speaker 4 (01:48):
But how special is.

Speaker 1 (01:49):
It knowing that if you look to your right and
you look to your left that you have those types
of players.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
I mean, it's it's really relaxing seeing him. Uh, on
the line of excremants, he's really relaxed seeing him. We
know that's a guy that's gonna make plays, take a
lot of striss off of everybody in the back end
in on the first seven.

Speaker 4 (02:03):
Then you got some leadership in the back end.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
When you talk about Michael Taft and what he's been
able to bring to this football team coming back for
another year, that back end seems to be something that's
gonna be under control.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (02:14):
How refreshing is that knowing that you can go out
there and play free.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Yeah, if it's good. We got guys like me and
he coming back for your three. He's been a guy
that been playing all three years. We got young guys
like Kobe Black, Gilbo and Kay Phillips in the corner spot.
That's all gonna be competing and ready to go for
a spy. And we have a lot of talent in
that in that back end. So it's gonna be real
fun to see what if they can accomplish go out
the season.

Speaker 1 (02:34):
And one of the things that we continue to look
at too, yeah, is obviously on the offensive side of
the ball. And I've I used to host the show
with Rob Bavers. Yeah, I've had I've worked with a
lot of the guys that went to the University of
Texas and their main thing is iron sharpens iron. So
when you're going up against the offense like the offense

(02:54):
that you see every day, it it's game speed is
ready right a lot.

Speaker 3 (02:59):
It's a lot of different plays informations that they do
that we see on game day.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
So it's it's real fun.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
And we get to compete against guys like Trey Wisner
and DeAndre Moore around Wino, So it makes the games
kind of easier to knowing you're going to get some of.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
The best competition in the world.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
Talk about the growth of u Coulton bask Oh, Yeah,
and what you've seen from Ethan Burke. Two guys that
they've been waiting. They they've been waiting their time, so
to speak. They've been putting some impact, but now, as
you said, three and four years into it, it's time
to go.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
Both of those guys kind of remind me of each
other in the way they're both physical, imposing guys that
use their use their strength and power to get in
the backfield, and they're gonna both have the least seasons,
just off in different ways.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
Yeah, we're talking to Anthony Hill Junior. I need to
make sure I say junior because got put respect on
dad's name.

Speaker 4 (03:45):
That's right.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
He was named after his daddy. So it's Anthony Hill Junior.
And now Anthony, you are a guy that is considered
a veteran. Yeah, I know that Derrick Johnson spent some
time with you guys, and you get a chance to
learn from all of those legends that come back. What
is one of the things that Derek has kind of
helped you out with when you're watching film, just just.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
Learning how to watch film and little stuff take me wise,
like we'll go watch something and then he'll take me
to the field and help me clean it up like
hands on. So it makes it makes it a lot
easier knowing you got a guy that knows what he's
doing and willing to go on the field that actually
helped you correct you.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
And that's the one thing about the University of Texas,
and I know a lot of schools continue to talk
about those guys being able to come back and they
actually being a far Yeah, they're actually part of it.
They moved back to the to the Austin area because
they love the university so much. But as you continue
to grow and and s start your path, what are

(04:41):
some of the keystones that you feel like each year
you've gotten better with.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
Oh no, just my recovery phase and learning how to sleep,
sleep more and not going to sleep at one am anymore,
trying to cut it down at live in thirty. This
little stuff like that, you know, helped you gain sleep,
and just learning how to how to treat your body,
going in the sauna's, hot tubs and different stuff to
make sure that make sure that we're good to go
during the season.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
Yeah, recovery is something that is important. We got a
chance to talk to coach back then one day. Yeah,
he said, yeah, these boys got to learn how their
bodies are.

Speaker 4 (05:12):
What is what is fueling you. It's fueling you.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
So you got to make sure that you get that
rest one last thing before we let you go, because
I know you got a busy schedule, but I wanted
to ask, like your mindset when you step on the field.
I remember the game at Alabama. I saw you make
that big play in Alabama and everybody that was your
welcome to the SEC moment. What is something that has

(05:37):
stood out with you that you remember vividly from the
very no, just for you that you said, oh, yeah,
I'm here.

Speaker 3 (05:45):
I always knew like who I was growing up, so
I always knew going into college it wouldn't be really
any different from me.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
I always trushed in myself and.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
My instincts, and I just kept it pushing throughout the thing,
and I just been mistriding.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
And just trying to get better every day.

Speaker 1 (05:58):
Yeah, we call him agen Z Roll number two because
of who what number he wears. But he is Anthony
Hill Junior, named after his daddy. So it's Mama Collum
Anthony Hill Junior. I'm McCollum, Anthony Hill Junior, Anthony Hill
