But you got to use that talkback feature on the
new and improved and always free iHeartRadio app. I will
give you a key word of the day. And if
(02:56):
you get the key word of the day and we
get your name, you might be going to that barbecue cookoff.
Mark he said, barbecue. You shouldn't have nothing else to say,
nothing else to do. Bar by Q. That's how you
get it done. But right now you know who else
is barbecue. This Texas men's basketball team, Now they were
(03:21):
good barbecue. They were they were where they needed to be.
They did an outstanding job they did for up to
the last eight minutes of the ball game. And then
two minutes it was it was it was in it
twenty and then those guys that played forward in center,
they became inspect the gadget. They had to go go
(03:43):
gadget legs and they went and blocked nine shots in
the in the second half. Bro, I don't I don't
know if I ever saw that many blocks in one half.
I don't think any body has seen that. I know
who hasn't seen it. It was coach Sean Miller, and
(04:06):
as he talked about this after the game, he had
some interesting takes about what he saw.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
Well, I think the first thing, you know that I
would like to say, is God really just appreciate in
the very heartfelt way our crowd tonight six o'clock start.
And our crowd, I believe has grown, maybe more as
they've believed in what we're doing or our team as
the years going on. But we can't ask for a
better home court atmosphere than one we had tonight. It
(04:35):
always starts with our students and just want to thank
them from me, our coaching staff, and most importantly our
players and team. We feel it and it's nice because
what our home crowd doesn't get the opportunity to do
that we do is we go away and when you're
at Missouri and you feel that you're at Georgia and
you feel that and you feel that desperation of March
(04:57):
and kind of where we're.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
At when you come home, you're like, man, I hope
we can have it, and we not only had it,
we had a great atmosphere. So that's the first thing.
I think.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
The second thing for me is just you really have
to give credit where credits due. A lot of times
in sports, we lost to a championship team tonight. I've
admired Todd Golden and the job that he's done since
he became the coach at Florida, how he's builded in
the new world of recruiting. Can learn a lot from
(05:28):
what they've done the last couple of years, and quite frankly,
that's the path that we want ahead here at Texas.
But with the returning firepower and experience that they have
from a year ago, I think they've really really settled
in the last month to play about as well.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
As any team in the country.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
I coached against Yukon in the Big East in both
of their national championship years. That was five games that
I coached against them, And I would say that this
Floided team just from a talent coaching, defense, balance, offense, shots, size,
and they have so many great things that I know
will allow them to compete for this year's national championship.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
And that's what they saw. They saw a championship quality
basketball team that learned how to compete all the way
to the very end. There were moments in that game
where you really thought that Texas was going to get
a chance to win the ball game. But Coach Miller
told you, there's something about this team that we got
to figure out how to play forty minutes.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
So if you're us and you're playing all of that
at home, I think if you look at the statue,
we led for every bit as much in our game,
we had the lead as they did. If you stop
the game at the eight minute media timeout, we were
plus one, sixty two to sixty one. I believe it
(06:50):
was the score, And really we didn't play a lot
of peaks and valleys from the opening tip all the
way to the final eight minutes. Until that final eight minutes,
it really was anybody's game. As they took the lead,
we had the lead as well, but they finished the
game on a twenty three to three run. That's to
their credit, and I think that's where my bigger concern is,
(07:13):
because although we played at a much higher level tonight
than we did on Saturday at Georgia at the under
eight minute media time out.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
At Georgia, we were tied up.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
It was a tight score, and they put it on
us in the last eight minutes in as similar fashion
as Florida did turnovers, you know, just guys not kind
of losing their way being able to get a key stop.
So it's like at the end, it's not representative of
(07:45):
what we did throughout. So I'm proud of our fight,
our effort level, and our quality of play really for
about thirty two minutes, and we just have to get
to the point here and really address down the stretch.
You get down to that final eight, it has to
just simply be more of the same. And if that's
the case, I think we'll go to the end and
(08:07):
we'll either win or lose a very close game. But
to not give ourselves the opportunity to get to the end,
you know, that's problematic. And if you asked me why,
I would tell you that our inability to get a
key stop in crunch time is a significant thing for us,
(08:27):
and we're gonna have to pass that test here over
these next couple of weeks.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
Well, I think the quality of who they played and
what talent that Florida had on the floor. I thought
they did pretty damn good. Now, Coach was right when
eight minutes left, it didn't look like the same team
that played the thirty two minutes before. But there's hope,
(08:59):
and that hope comes from structure and sticking to your offense,
playing with effort on defense. It looked to me as
if Texas kind of got frustrated and they got a
little tired. You got to push through that and without
(09:26):
being hyper critical, which I tried my best not to be,
especially in a case where you play against the national champion.
The year before, they had they had better talent. They
had some guys that were very big, very athletic, and
(09:48):
you used the term stretchy and long yesterday. You were right.
This team, the Florida's team, they have everything they need
to win a national championship again this year. Texas does not.
They have to build, and I think they've already did
(10:10):
a good job of recruiting and getting ready for next year,
but that's not going to help this year. Right Well,
what coach really needs to work on is defense, and
he talked about having being able to understand what you
need to do when crunch time is here to be
able to win the ball game, but.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
To not give ourselves the opportunity to get to the end.
You know, that's problematic. And if you asked me why,
I would tell you that our inability to get a
key stop in crunch time is a significant thing for
us and we're gonna have to pass that test here
over these next couple of weeks.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
And the test needs to be learn how to play defense.
You have to make stops, you have to get loose balls,
you have to do everything you possibly can because, as
we talked about, your defense is sub par. You are
on a historic rise on offense. The efficiency in which
(11:14):
you play is unbelievable. But they ran into a team
that had eleven blocks. Eleven blocks, as you said, nine
in the second half. It's tough to score when your
ball is getting swatted up into the stains. We're just
getting started here on the morning kickoff. Coming up next,
we're gonna hear from coach Vick Schaeffer as they have
(11:35):
a big matchup against another ranked opponent seven point thirty.
We will seven thirty four. Excuse me, We'll have Eric
Henry of Boards two, four, seven, and at eight o'clock
we'll have Texas baseball coach Jim Slosnagle joining us. This
is a great Thursday, right here on the morning kickoff
on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred the Zone and always
(11:56):
free on that iHeartRadio app. Welcome back to the morning
cai off right here on sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
to zone and always free on that iHeart Radio app.
As we get closer closer to football season, we'll get
a chance to talk to our guy, Eric Henry of
Horns two four to seven get his thoughts on what
coach Stark said. But obviously we're gonna talk Texas basketball
(12:18):
and of course Texas baseball. Eric Henry seven thirty four
coach Jim Slasnegem, Texas head baseball coach, will be joining
us at eight a m. But right now I want
to talk Texas women's basketball. They continue that quest of
a national championship. They've had a unbelievable year. They just
went through Senior Night, so a lot of emotion was
(12:43):
involved with that. All they did was go out and
win that game by fifty points against Mississippi State. But
tonight they play another ranked opponent, as the number twenty
three ranked Georgia Bulldogs come into the Moody Center and
prepare for a big time matchup in the SEC. No
(13:03):
days off for this Texas Longhorns women's basketball team, But
yesterday during the press conference, coach coach Losnage coach Vick
Schaeffer talked about Madison Booker a lot and things about
what she brings to the table, because it's hard to
(13:23):
believe that she's in her junior year. It seems like
she's been here forever and she just keeps getting better
and better. Her numbers are up across the board and
you'll hear VIC talk about it. But one of the
biggest things about her is about her leadership and being
more vocal. So yesterday VIC was asked about her leadership,
(13:44):
who she is and she He was also asked about
Kyla Oldacre and her impact on this basketball team.
Speaker 4 (13:51):
I think with Madison it's just you know, the maturity pace,
one year older, one year wiser.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
She also knows I want her to do it. I
want her to be to assume that role. In my mind,
you know, next year she needs to be a captain.
And I don't have captains, you know, I don't.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
I don't give out that title to just anybody, or
to seniors just because they're seniors. You've got to be
able to wear that every day. You've got to be consistent,
you've got to be emotionally, physically mature. And you know,
it's it's uh, it's something that I really, you know,
(14:32):
would hope that she'll be able to wear next year.
And I've got a couple other kids as well, some
young kids even in mind that I think are capable
of doing that. And again I've had some great teams
and we don't name captains, you know, the coaches are
the captains, but you know, book stats are up again.
(14:53):
She's I think she's up over two and a half
points a game more than a year ago. Rebounds are
about to saying steals her up on a full steal
a game more, she's over too steals a game. I
think assists are are up a little maybe, And so
(15:13):
you know, again, the kid just continues to get better.
She works, and and so again it's it's trying to
give her as much responsibility as she can handle. And
I think she can handle a lot because you know, life,
life's going to demand that of her as well.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
And so.
Speaker 4 (15:38):
I think in the in in her situation in her
case because of she's just a great kid.
Speaker 1 (15:43):
Number one.
Speaker 4 (15:44):
I mean, she really is a great kid and uh
again result of tremendous upbringing by her family. And uh So,
I think when you get an opportunity with with kids
like that, you want to try to you want to
try to help them have those experiences because those experiences
(16:07):
are going to plan out, They're going to prepare them
more when life gets here. So real world life's here,
real world's coming. So yeah, I'm really proud of her.
And again just seeing her whole maturation while she's been there.
It's hard to believe she's been here three years, Like
it's just blown by. And and so that's always a
(16:32):
vision for her is not just adding to her game,
which I think we have, but adding to her whole experience.
Kyle has been great. You know, I love Kyla. She's
she gets misunderstood sometimes because of her facial expressions or
lack of and I just really love the kid. I
(16:54):
wish i'd had her all four years, you know. And
and again she's getting more and more or comfortable with
her voice, and her voice is a lot like how
she plays sometimes. You know, we all know she can
be a real presence and physically and so again, I
think she has credibility with her teammates and they know
(17:17):
she cares deeply about them. And you're talking about a
very mature kid, very mature young lady.
Speaker 1 (17:23):
So agin.
Speaker 4 (17:27):
Kylis had a great two years here and appreciate her.
Speaker 1 (17:31):
And again she's not done. That's amazing because I'm looking
at what Madison Booker's numbers look like. To his point,
her minutes per game are up by two. She averages
thirty three minutes per game this season. She's shooting at
fifty percent from the floor, She's gotten better at the
(17:56):
free throw line each step of the way. Her best
year was her freshman year, but she is right around
the same number. She's doing well on the rebounds, assists
per game, she's doing outstanding. So she has done everything
that you could possibly want for a basketball player at
the University of Texas, and the recognition continues to be there.
(18:18):
I mean, there's no telling how many awards she's gonna
win again this year because of the way that she plays.
And as far as Kyla Oldacre, you know, we talk
about the fact that she doesn't smile much, and yeah,
and Danny told Danny Davis of the Austin American Statesman.
You can go back and listen to the podcast wherever
you get your podcast. Danny also said, you know, she's
(18:42):
she's business like, she's here for work. So those are
the funny, not funny things, but those are the things
that make you appreciate how she goes about her business
straight missus seriously. Yeah, yeah, she is all she's all
locked in on what she's supposed to be doing. But
this also Madison was They were asked about Madison Booker
(19:02):
yesterday and basically saying is she considered a positionless player?
Because you'll see her at the point, you'll see her
at the two, you'll see her go down on the block.
She can do a little bit of everything. And coach
Vic Shaeffer answered that question with, yeah, that's a good
way of putting it.
Speaker 4 (19:22):
Yeah, I think she's not only positionless for us, but
that's why she's going to be a high round pick
in the draft because she can play multiple positions. You know,
she's played point guard for US, two, three, four. You know,
she just really she's a tough matchup wherever you put her.
(19:47):
And you know, I'm again, I don't know that I've
ever had a player like her that I could play
at literally four positions and she can dominate every one
of them. And so uh and again, I think that's
what they see at the next level too. So excited
that we've been able to kind of sentuate that a
(20:09):
little bit and and put her in.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
Those spots and you know, she she.
Speaker 4 (20:17):
She does allow us to really diversify, you know who
I can play at different times in the ball game,
and it's really been good.
Speaker 1 (20:29):
Isn't it interesting that she she is that versatile to
where he could say, all right, I'm gonna give Rory
a break, I'm gonna give Brie a break. Take the one.
Go out there and be able to play. Then you
could say, hey, I need you down Loan. Not only
not only that she's she's still getting better. A lot
of times when you have a player that's great like her,
(20:50):
they're they're to finished product already, Like her three point
shot has developed. It's just that she doesn't shoot a
lot of them because she don't have to, right, that's
not what she's asked to do. I'm sure that if
she goes to the next level and they go, hey,
we need you to knock down forty two percent of thees.
(21:12):
You know, twenty three foot shots, She's gonna do that. Yeah. Yeah,
she's a special, special basketball player. And the fact that
we can say that she is position list is a
compliment for being as versatile as she's become. I still
remember her being pushed to the point guard position. She's like,
(21:34):
I've never played point guard in my life, but just
like what the Dallas Mavericks are doing with Cooper Flag, Yeah,
that's what Vic Shaeffer did with her to make her
understand what the positions are on the court and where
she can be more versatile. So let's talk about the
intelligence that it takes to do thattely, we always talk
(21:55):
about the athletics side of it. To be able to
play point guard, you have to know the plays from
the point guard position, not from the forward position. Yeah.
She understands what to do in every play from all
three different positions that she plays enough, that's why she's
the star and positionless basketball player. Coming up next, we're
(22:19):
gonna talk to our guy who can play multiple positions.
He's our guy. Eric Henry of Horns two Ken bro
joins us next to talk all things Longhord right here,
on the morning Kickoff on Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred
to Zone and always free on that iHeartRadio app. Welcome
back to the morning kickoff right here on Sports nine,
I mean with Y and Sports Radio AM thirteen hundred Zone.
(22:42):
Don't forget coming up at eight o'clock, Texas had baseball
coach Jim Slosnega will be joining us talk all Texas baseball.
But it's Thursday. That means we get to talk to
our guy, Eric Henry of Horns two four seven as
he breaks down all things Texas Long Horns. E. Good morning, sir.
How you doing bro, Good morning morning.
Speaker 5 (23:05):
Coming off of a bit of an early night there
Moody Center last night, you know, but definitely ready to
dive into all things ut this morning.
Speaker 1 (23:12):
Well let's get into it. You. Let's start right there.
We were all at the mood yesterday getting a chance
to take in the defending national champions versus the Texas
Long Horns, and for thirty two minutes it was a ballgame.
Texas was right there, I'd said going into the ballgame,
if we get good play from the back court, things
(23:32):
could be good. And you know, as well as I do.
Tournament time, it's all about the guard play, and I
thought for a while Texas was right there, but then
that eight minute mark left in the game, and all
things fell apart.
Speaker 6 (23:46):
Yeah, you know, quick shout out to our guy Levon
Whittaker Cars.
Speaker 5 (23:49):
The price was right for Levon, but it wasn't right
or it was the right for the long Horns going
down the stretch the second half. No, you know, listen,
two things right, here's the positive in the next of it.
The positive is for thirty three minutes, Texas looked like
it could play with Dardner or anyone in the nation.
Of course, defending national champion in Florida. If you were
(24:10):
at the game where hard you're at the game marking tree,
you watch the game, Florida size is ridiculous, okay. I
mean they go six', nine six, eleven six eleven over
their front line And, florida excuse, me seven nine dude
on the bench and then the seven foot nine he
was talls player college basketball on the.
Speaker 1 (24:24):
Bench texas out rebounded Of.
Speaker 6 (24:26):
Florida let's not underestimate.
Speaker 5 (24:27):
That, however where the size came into, play Hard, As
i'm sure you saw eleven blocks to.
Speaker 6 (24:32):
One, OKAY i Mean texas trying to get. Inside that
was a. Struggle but the positive Is texas you, know
did a lot well in that.
Speaker 5 (24:40):
Game now the, negative and this is something That Sean
miller said to his post, game is quite, frankly this
team just doesn't do enough defensively to generate you, know
the type of offense and you're probably gonna need easy,
offense hard and mark come tournament. Time, right you can't
depend on everything being a set play or everything being
official and see everything get into the free throw line
(25:01):
or getting the mid aged. Jumper florida was able to
Hold texas without a field goal for the final seven
to twenty seven of the, game primarily because long words
couldn't get a, Stop they couldn't get an easy bucket
of steal that that least a transition. Bucket they couldn't
get any of that, right and by the Time florida
size you, know kind of overwhelmed The, texas it was too.
Late so that's got the big. Takeaway BUT i still
(25:23):
think there's room for this team to win two out
of next four.
Speaker 1 (25:25):
Games the one thing THAT i had as a, complaint
as hard As texas played and who they played, against,
guys they won A National championship last, Year, like this
is a really really good, team But, Texas howe, was
had four. Fouls con didn't have four, fouls excuse, me
And texas did not go back at. Them why do
(25:49):
you not draw up a play, where, Uh i'm Boba.
Titus have both The titus go up against how Or,
condon like run a switch play to where you get
your stars against, them attacking the, basket forcing them the.
(26:13):
Foul it doesn't.
Speaker 5 (26:15):
Happen it's funny you mentioned, that right Because Thomas haw,
Specifically Sean miller was asking the post game, about you,
know his foul, trouble And miller said That Thomas haw
is what he said specifically was he's a really smart.
Player so once he picks up that third, foul it's
hard to get him to pick up that fourth and that. Fifth,
Right Alice con didn't finish with, Two but you're talking
(26:35):
about the other big Who i'm getting his name right,
now who had four fouls as. Well, right there were
opportunities For texas to try to get some of their
bigs two foul. Out but in specificity To Thomas, HAW
i just you, know Using shawn's, answer he talked about
his BASKETBALL. Iq BUT i also, think And i'm not
disagreeing with. You to be, Clear i'm not disagreeing with.
YOU i think it might be a little easier said than.
(26:56):
Done Considering Jordan pope, right six foot, guard Right Tremon,
mark a guy.
Speaker 1 (27:01):
Who lives in the mid.
Speaker 5 (27:02):
Range it would have come down really To Dylan swain
to try to be that guy's going to penetrate and
try to get those guys in Fel. Troe but to your,
point If texas is gonna play its games getting to
the free throw line right and winning it, there that
would have been.
Speaker 1 (27:13):
Smart and they get. Diggets they did go sixteen of
twenty one from the free throw. Line and you Mentioned Dalan.
Swain he looked like a man. Possessed but the one
position that looked like his struggle is the fore. Position
and he was pretty adamant about the game that he's
going to give some other guys an opportunity to play that.
Speaker 6 (27:33):
POSITION i, mean he can say that there aren't really
other guys left.
Speaker 5 (27:38):
Cards you, know he could say, It BUT i mean
the fact that matter is, this It's Nick, cody it's
Jam Heidi. Declan duru right got some early run in
the early part of the. Year BUT i think in
talking With sean and the kind of the staff as
the seasons were, on they look At decland as a
guy who really is going to benefit.
Speaker 6 (27:54):
From learning this year and then coming back next.
Speaker 1 (27:56):
Year.
Speaker 5 (27:57):
Right Cam heidi's been very, streaky, right you, know early
part of the, year he's out of the. Lineup Nick
cody goes, down Then Cam heidi comes. In he looks
like he's under a three point. Threat now he looks
like he's kind of fallen back into the shadows a
little bit as other guys have Emerged Nick. Cody Sean
miller was complimentary Of Nick cody's nineteen, minutes but still
noted that you, know they need more from that. Position
(28:19):
it can't be a spot where they get five points
and two bore, Right, like it can't just be a,
total you know ghost at the four.
Speaker 1 (28:26):
We're talking To Eric henry Of horns two four. Seven
you can follow him At eric C Henry underscore on
Social he let's go To texas. Football we got a
chance to spend some time with Coach. Sarksian he was
a little testy On, monday a little fired, up it
seemed to. Me but there were some things that were
discussed during that time that kind of stood. Out obviously
(28:48):
the offseason surgery from Arch manning and some of the
other players being able to come back and be ready to.
Go but he was glowing about two. Things number one
About will Must champ and his ability to be on the.
Staff but What Cam coleman has been able to do
since he's been on the forty. Acres, yeah you talked
About Steve sarkisan being. Tested what Is?
Speaker 6 (29:09):
Steve Steve sarkis is always ready for a fight if.
Speaker 5 (29:12):
You're half Must right, now as far as you, Know
i'll start With Will, muschamp.
Speaker 1 (29:17):
Right you, KNOW i know this might not endear me
To texas, fans.
Speaker 5 (29:20):
But, Listen i'm tired of seeing the clip of Coach
boom punching the white board from twenty years. Ago it
was twenty years, ago all, RIGHT i want to see
What Coach boom is doing. Now AND i thought it
was really encouraging to hear that he's out on the recruiting. Trail,
right you, Know i'll kind of summarize this. Quickly former
defense Sportier Pete kukowski wasn't prettily known as a heavy.
Recruiter he's more of a closer right that some of
(29:41):
the other assistants would do the heavy recruiting AND pk
would close and be, Like, hey here's how you're gonna
Fit in my, Defense Will mushchamp is the guy who's
out there pounding the, pavement you, know going from school to,
school and maybe that resonates more with a defensive player who's, like,
Hey i'm hearing from the guy who system is going to,
be who is recruiting me as we're on the recruiting.
Trail SO i think THAT i thought that was. Encouraging
(30:01):
and then, Yes Cam, Coleman Relief, Brown hollywood. Smothers it
sounds as if those guys are assimilating very. Quickly, HOWEVER
i will say, this the one name THAT i want
to hear more than anything else with assimilating Is Melvon
sianni because all those things come. Together the offensive line
has to come together as.
Speaker 1 (30:17):
WELL i like that they did show a little quick
snap in a video Of sianni working. Out he looks
good LIKE i would have said he was a tight.
End we had a lot of good looking players on
the forty. Acres, YEAH i mean sometimes you always had that,
guy the first one off the. Bus, YES i need
(30:38):
you to scare. Him last one to get in the, game,
yeah last one to get. In but this, guy he
looks really really. Good not a big giant offensive. Lineman
Is freud's girth and how wide he, is but he's you,
know six, five you, know two hundred and ninety, pounds
(31:00):
almost three hundred. Pounds that's that's a big. Man but
we we've had some some tackles that were uh six
six and you, know three, thirty so he's undecized in that.
Category thoughts he, oh, no first of, hard stop making him.
FACE i remember this is on. YouTube, secondly, no in terms.
Speaker 5 (31:22):
Of, siani you, know To, marcus he's an athletic Tackle,
marcus BUT i think you're saying very.
Speaker 1 (31:28):
Athletic, yeah he's a guy who he.
Speaker 5 (31:31):
Might not remind you Of Cameron williams in terms of
that road, greater but there's a reason he's performed. Well
and also say, this, right he might be you know
a little lighter, now but there's.
Speaker 1 (31:42):
Room for him to develop. It you.
Speaker 6 (31:43):
Know just remember his.
Speaker 5 (31:44):
BACKGROUND a didn't play a ton of high school football
coming out Of, canada, right so that left him under,
recruited which is why he ended up At temple and
then of course spent his first two years At temple
before going To Wake. FOREST i think you get him
here on the forty acres for a full. Summer it
wouldn't shock me if he comes, in you, know just
the year closer to, three twenty, three twenty.
Speaker 1 (32:02):
Five giving it.
Speaker 6 (32:03):
Size but to your, Point, mark if you can.
Speaker 5 (32:04):
Maintain that, athleticism that's gonna be, key especially With Brandon
baker kicking inside SO i can go get a little
more size on the.
Speaker 1 (32:11):
Interior appreciate you as, always, Man have a safe. Trip
this is the hardest working man this, weekend for, sure
my man getting that milagy. IN i appreciate you as, always,
man Oh, Man Tom, fellas appreciate you. All. Yeah coming up,
next we'll continue the conversations about an NC a. Lawsuit yes,
shocking but this time it is in the NCAA's, fault
(32:34):
but they might get drawn into. It right here on
the morning kickoff on Sports RADIO am thirteen Hundred The
zone and always free on that iHeartRadio App come back
to the morning kickoff right here on Sports RADIO am
thirteen Hundred The. Zone shout out to our, Guy Eric
henry Of horns two four, seven for sliding through and

pack of. Tickets make sure you stay locked in tomorrow as,
well and of course make sure you tuned into The
Craig Way, Show the voice of The Texas Longhorse Craig
(34:00):
way from his show from two to five this. Afternoon
he'll be giving away some tickets as, well but not
but not to the barbecue. Cookoff so stay locked. In all,
right let's get into it because there is some controversy
that is brewing in college. Football we all know about
the transfer portal and what the transfer portal brings to,
everyone but this is what you really need to. Understand
(34:21):
when you break these, partnerships there is a possibility of
you getting. Sued so what is Happening? Cincinnati The university Of,
cincinnati The bearcats are suing the former Quarterback Brendan sowerby
for breaking his contract with. Them he signed a two
year contract ahead of the twenty twenty five, season broke,
(34:43):
it transferred To Texas, tech and now him and his
representatives are being sued because they were wanting a buy
out for the. Contract run me my, Minny, Yes, yes
in the court THE Us District courts On. Wednesday according
to the Athletic Cincinnati athletics is a proud, partner is
(35:06):
proud to partner with the student athletes and the honors
of the contractual commitments it makes to. Them we expect
the student athletes and their representatives to do the. Same
in his lucrative nil contract With Cincinnati, Athletics Brendan sowerby
committed to stay and play for two seasons as a
(35:26):
prowd Bear cat. Representative as he also agreed that if
he left the university before that, time he would pay
the university a specific amount for his substantial harm that
has happened with the breach of the. Contract, dun, dun.
Dundun why WHY i just said this in the? Break
(35:51):
why was that this guy knows that he has a.
Deal you signed it on your way. Out, Hey i'm
breaking the. CONTRACT i know THAT i agreed to pay this.
Money here's the. Check, Goodbye god bless good. Night but
(36:12):
you want to get you want to you want to
not pay the fine to leave and and and you're
the one that's that's initiating the. Departure people. TRIPPING i just,
CAN'T i just. Can't, right this is too much like
the n c A a is not at fault, here they're.
(36:33):
Not they're in it because it's college athlete, right because
it's college. Athletics but this should be a very simple.
Case this this the judge should not should be angry
that this is in his, courtroom wasting, time taxpayer dollars
being affected because somebody won't go to their check. Book you,
(36:56):
paid you did, It you pay the, crime you do the.
Time yeah, Yeah and that to me explains everything to
why this college nil agreements and everything else that is
involved in it is kind of. Sketchy and on the,
(37:16):
contrast on the flip, side what is it when the
university does that to a? Player? Right, oh it's a.
Crime it's, horrible and that's the. Horrible but also we
have to respect when players get upset and want to
get into transfer portal because they weren't getting compensated what
(37:37):
they thought they were when they originally signed the. Agreement,
Right so you're basically saying what's good for the goose
is good for the. Game well here's the other, Thing,
mark AND i wanted to get your thoughts on, this
and we can talk about this another time at a bigger,
Length but when these moments happen along the, way shouldn't
(37:58):
there be a precedent that is said and notes that
are taken about how this. Happened you, know they always
talk about The kurk flood thing for free agency in
baseball when that started, happening that was The Kerk flood.
Rule and then you start looking at certain rules that
are happening across. Sports now there needs to be a
(38:20):
president about. This so this is how we handle it going. Forward, Yes,
yes AND i think that is going to be an
integral part of what college athletics and the branding of college.
Athletics that is why there's that little. Asterisk we need
to start putting asterisks BY ncaa and the governing bodies
(38:41):
because the ain't nobody governing. It coming up, next we're
gonna talk to our guy, Coach Jim slasnagel as The
Texas longhorns sweep the homestand and now they head to
H town for a big tournament this, week and well
it's a, classic it's not really a. Tournament we talk
about it right here on The Morning kickoff on Sports
(39:03):
RADIO am thirteen Hundred The zone and always free on
that iHeartRadio. App welcome back to the Morning kickoff right
here on Sports RADIO am thirteen Hundred The. Zone i'm telling,
y'all right, now the best conversations happened bakout, yeah about
real life. Abouts but right now we need to go
talk real life with our, guy Coach Jim slosnagel of
(39:27):
The Texas longhorns baseball team as they swept the home
stand to move to eight and. Zero but now they
are on getting ready to go on the road for
a big test at The Bruce Bolk classic down in H.
Town you remember it As Minute, made but now it's
Called Dyking. Park good, morning, coach how you. Doing i'm doing, well.
Guys good, morning good to see. You good to see
(39:49):
you as. Well you, know a lot has happened during
that home. Stand we saw a guy here for a,
Cycle we saw some great pitching. Performances but you also
learned a lot about your baseball team at. Home so
during this time at, home do you feel like you
accomplished everything that you set out to do early in the. Season,
(40:09):
YEAH i, WOULD i would say. So.
Speaker 7 (40:11):
Uh you, Know number, one you just want to get
the games in and with the exception of a few
north WIND chilei, Days, uh we've had really good, Weather
we've had really good, crowds and and and what we've
won the, games which is.
Speaker 1 (40:24):
Always the best. Part.
Speaker 7 (40:26):
Uh but you, KNOW i feel like we've learned more
about our pitching. Staff uh some, roles you, know With
valantis going in the, rotation Uh burns to the back
end of the games and some guys in the.
Speaker 1 (40:37):
MIDDLE i think we've learned a lot about, that at
least to this.
Speaker 7 (40:40):
Point we Know Adrian rodriguez can play shortstop in the
in the real games and not just in. Practice and uh,
YEAH i MEAN i think we're in a pretty good.
Spot we just need to stay healthy and look forward
to taking the team on the, road get on a
different playing surface that's going to be interesting for us
all is For texas, teams and hopefully playing front of
(41:03):
some Big longhorn crowds down there In.
Speaker 1 (41:05):
Houston, coach is no secret that Being university Of, texas
you always gonna get people's best. Shot, now after this,
weekend after you sweep This, classic they're gonna come after your,
coach Because, ben you said that going To california that
(41:31):
it was gonna be an outstanding test for y'all and
you would know who your team. Is and then hard Just,
mark after this weekend In, houston we'll know more About
every week is gonna. Amplify are you ready for everybody
to start The texas is? Undefeated and they're supposed to
(41:56):
be number. ONE i try, coach trust, ME i try
to explain everything to he breaks it. Down but, LIKE
i know where the pressure is gonna come, from and
and is the success that you're.
Speaker 7 (42:08):
Having, YEAH i MEAN i appreciate you saying. That and
if you can foresee the, future and you, know we're
winning three games this, weekend uh let's go To. Vegas but,
YEAH i, mean, Uh mike knows that one, weekend one
(42:28):
stretch of, games certainly one game doesn't define anything in. Baseball,
uh because we we know there's gonna Be i'd like
to think we're gonna win all these, games but we know,
that especially in our, league that there's gonna be some
rough moments and how you react to those is really
going to define your. Season but, uh, yeah we're we're
looking forward to you, Know Coastal carolina played for a national.
Speaker 1 (42:51):
Title baylor is certainly playing their.
Speaker 7 (42:53):
Best baseball they've played in years under Coach, thompson and
In Ohio state is off to a good, START i
believe as. Well, SO i, mean it's never really about
the teams we. Play it's about how we play against
the game itself and handle.
Speaker 1 (43:06):
That but but, YEAH i, mean when you're At, texas
it is what it. Is the brand is so, big.
Speaker 7 (43:15):
You're always going to get everybody's best, shot and that's,
okay we. Don't this place is not for the timid norther,
week so we're ready for.
Speaker 1 (43:23):
That, COACH i wanted to talk a little bit about
the play on your defensive side of the ball this past.
Weekend you guys made some unbelievable. Plays talking About Timo
piserra at third. Base obviously you talked about A rod
and what he was able to do at, shortstop but
you also got to look at what's happening With Casey
borba over there at first. Base he's he's he's done
(43:45):
a really really good job over there at first, base
and of course behind the plate With Carson tiny throwing
out a couple of guys this. Weekend is this the
defense that you had hoped to see early in the
season as, well with some new positions and some changes
that has. Happened, yeah for. Sure that's it's a very
undervalued part of the.
Speaker 7 (44:04):
Game people think if you play shortstop you can just
jump to another, spot especially third, base and it's, EASY
i personally believe other than. Catcher playing third base in
college baseball is the toughest position to play on the
field because the college teams, bunt the players normally try
to run all the balls, out and you're constantly dealing
(44:26):
with balls that are hit really, weird you, know top
spin balls that you have to come get or you
have to retreat, on maybe a ball at, rocket a slow.
Roller you have to throw from different arm, angles and
that's just not something that you can just flip on
in a. Day and so He's tamo's put a lot
of good work. In so Is Josh lewison And borblle
on that side of the. Field But besett has certainly
(44:49):
done an amazing job and as Has. Casey the challenge now,
is LIKE i said, earlier we're going to a different playing.
Service we took the two, low took the infielders yesterday
After Round. Rock Chris almondariz and the boys have been
awesome up there for, us so we're able to get
some ground balls on a grass and dirt.
Speaker 1 (45:06):
Field not all those are the.
Speaker 7 (45:08):
Same so we'll get up so practice time tonight before
before our games tomorrow down In, houston and then WE'LL
i think we'll get some ground balls maybe before we
play the Game friday, night but it's definitely an adjustment
and that'll be an interesting thing to watch over the
course of the, weekend is how we field the.
Speaker 1 (45:26):
Ball how much time do you need on that surface
to get. ACCLIMATED i mean it's never, enough but, YEAH
i mean it's just we we get what we.
Speaker 7 (45:40):
Get we Will we only get fifty minutes for practice
tonight and the primary.
Speaker 1 (45:45):
Focus will be on ground the, defense and and getting
used to the Big league.
Speaker 7 (45:49):
Stadium you know that The crawford boxes out there in left,
FIELD i don't know if they still call them, that
but the short portion and left and then you have
the angle off playing left field out there is really
a challenge and just the setting of The Big league.
Stadium they did tell us they're going to have the
roof open all three, days so that helps because you're
(46:12):
not you, know when you have that. Roof college players
aren't used, to you, know seeing the ball of that
and sometimes you can lose. It but hopefully having the
roof off will help. Us but it's definitely different dimensions
and different. Conditions but that's what that's one beautiful thing
about baseball is every game is a little bit different
in every.
Speaker 1 (46:28):
Part we're talking To texas baseball Coach jim slasonego as
his team starts the season eight no and now they're
head down to The Bruce Boat classic In houston and
with a big matchup tonight with The carolina excuse me
tomorrow With Coastal. Carolina Coastal carolina coach is dealing with
injuries to their starting, pitching which is not, ideal especially
(46:51):
early in the, season but they're going to reevaluate in eight.
Weeks BUT i want to go back to your pitching
because you've been able to mix and match and have
some different. Opportunities you had the big Fellas Sam cozart
go On tuesday and after the first pitch of the,
game he seemed to really dial it in and have.
Control how impressed were you with his performance On tuesday
(47:13):
night AGAINST. Utrgv, yeah super.
Speaker 7 (47:16):
Impressed it's truly the first time that he's been challenged
or the first time that he's kind of created his
own little speed bump to get.
Speaker 1 (47:25):
Through he walked a couple, guys which.
Speaker 7 (47:27):
Is not something he normally, does but he had to
pitch out of some jams And max had to GO
i think they had first and, second maybe one out
in an, inning And max went and had a good
mound visit with him and he struck the next two guys.
Out so it's kind of the old THING e PLUS r. Egles,
oh the event plus the response equals the. Outcome sometimes
you can't control the, event but you can control your.
Speaker 1 (47:48):
Response and he responded really.
Speaker 7 (47:51):
Well if the other team wants to win at the
first pitch of the, game have at it because more you,
know more likely than, not that's going to be an.
Out that one so happened to be a groundball single
at the. Middle But tam did a great job and
he's a very valued part of our team in, rotation
AND i imagine you'll see him back out there again next.
Speaker 1 (48:10):
Week and then my other question was going to be
you mentioned About valantis and what he's been able to
do On, Sunday But Thomas burns coming out that, bullpen
the way that he has been, effective it's been lights
out so far every time he's been out. There what
do you attribute that? To AND i can see the
competitiveness in his nature that he wants the ball as
(48:32):
often as you want to give it to.
Speaker 7 (48:33):
Him, yeah he DOES i mean HE i mean it's
only two, appearances but he was that way in our practices.
Speaker 1 (48:39):
Too just.
Speaker 7 (48:42):
Strikes you, know a guy that throws that hard in,
college they tend to spray the ball a little bit
every now and. Then but it's not just the strikes
with his fastball and how his fastball, plays but it's
the off speed, pitches the fact that he mainly uses
Fastball saturday night and then he comes out of the
comes out in the ninth inning On, sunday and the
(49:03):
and the first. Hitter you, know that guy is just
getting ready to hit fastballs and he GETS i think
two sliders in a split and and you pretty much
demoralize the other dugout when you're like when they're, like,
hey wait, what.
Speaker 1 (49:15):
It's more than just the. Fastball so again he'll be.
Speaker 7 (49:20):
Challenged and when you, pitching when when you pitching those
moments and you're living life on the edge every every
now and, then it's not going to go your.
Speaker 1 (49:28):
Way so you know, what we'll see how that.
Speaker 7 (49:30):
Goes But, burns he's mentally. Strong he puts a lot
of time. In, uh he's been through a. Lot he's
been through a lot as the starting pitcher at a
S u and he went through a lot last year
as kind of a middle, reliever late, guy set up
guy last. Year but we have full confidence in. Him
we just got to keep him, healthy AND i think
part of his success is going to be the other
(49:51):
pitchers on the, team guys Like, crossling Cal, higgins some
other guys that can close games on. Days maybe he's
not ready to do it or we don't want to stress.
Them you, Know twice in the, weekend.
Speaker 1 (50:04):
Right before we let you, go, COACH i wanted to
talk a little bit about your. Offense, Obviously i'm sure
you went back and listened to some of the, broadcasts
and one of the things THAT i kept emphasizing was
the fact that there's a lot of pressure for every
opposing pitcher because one through nine you never know who's
going to be the one to take control of that. Game,
(50:26):
Obviously Ethan mendoza is leading in everything except for curtain,
calls and then you look at What Aiden robbins And
Carson tini is starting to see the baseball a little,
bit and then of course what you've been getting from Pac.
Man but you've also had guys come off the bench
and you've given, opportunities and they're making the most of
those opportunities as.
Speaker 7 (50:45):
Well, YEAH i think the key to any good lineup,
is especially in our, league most teams got the first
half of the, lineup it's gonna be, awesome but what
can that bottom third of the lineup? Do and just
in terms of getting on, base, know, Uh tamo's not
afraid to take, Pitches pack's not afraid to take.
Speaker 1 (51:04):
Pitches they'll use the whole field to. Hit they'll put.
Speaker 7 (51:07):
Them you, know they're pretty good at putting the ball
in play as, needed putting the ball and play with two.
Speaker 1 (51:11):
Strikes so.
Speaker 7 (51:13):
The threat of the homer necessarily isn't there at the
bottom right, now but just getting on base to where
they set the table For mendoza And robbins and A
rod and and And robins And tinny AND i think
ash And.
Speaker 1 (51:27):
Larson has done a really good.
Speaker 7 (51:28):
Job jonah should be back in there tomorrow, night hopefully
in the, field so that'll give us some options at
D h two uh to to play around a little.
Bit So so, YEAH i mean we just got to
keep them, healthy. MAN i, mean that's the.
Speaker 1 (51:45):
The whole key to the.
Speaker 7 (51:45):
Thing is the best, abilities availability and you see what's
happened To Coastal, carolina AND i hate that for college
baseball because they have such a great program and those two,
pitchers Specifically flukey that THOSE i mean that those are
future big leaguers and so college baseball deserves to see
those guys.
Speaker 1 (52:01):
Play hopefully they'll get, back.
Speaker 7 (52:03):
But that's my main focus is just trying to keep
these guys, healthy, strong and ready to go for the.
Speaker 1 (52:09):
Games. Well as, always we we wish you the best
and and the hope for a great, weekend even though
mark see the future and if it does go that,
way we are definitely going To. Vegas BUT i wanted
to ask you this and this is us and our
old mentality as far as baseball is. CONCERNED i was
kept calling his his split finger of fortball during the
(52:31):
during the game the other, day AND i had to stop.
MYSELF i was, like for those that are, wondering it's
the same as the split, Finger i'm just older AND
i know of the fortball over the split.
Speaker 7 (52:41):
Finger yeah, yeah that's uh, yeah that's that definitely shows your.
Speaker 1 (52:45):
AGE i remember those things.
Speaker 7 (52:49):
Too back in The Roger Roger craig And, Andrce Bruce soudor. Day, so,
uh it's, okay it's all, right you're why not not?
Speaker 1 (52:59):
Old appreciate that as, always thanks for taking the time
and then enjoyed the trip To. Houston you guys have
a great, Weekend hookim appreciate. It there he is Coach
Jim slasnagel leading His Texas longhorns to an undefeated season thus,
far and now they get their first, test defending runner
up in The National championship last, Year Coastal carolina taking
(53:22):
on The horns tomorrow night at Dyke In park in
The Bruce Bolt. Classic coming up, next we're gonna hear
from guess, Who Anthony Hill, junior and he's talking about
those workouts That mark brought up a little while. Ago
right here on the morning kickoff On Sports RADIO am
thirteen hundred To zone and always free on That iHeartRadio
(53:42):
app great stuff From texas baseball Coach Jim slapsnagel as
they get ready to hit the road and handle business
in H. Town make sure if you missed that, interview
or any of our interviews that we've had throughout the
week or throughout the, season get over to our podcast
page AT a thirteen Hundred The zone or on the iHeartRadio,
(54:03):
app well wherever you get your, podcasts because some, great
great interviews have been. Conducted MARK Nfl, conversation we talked
a little bit yesterday ABOUT. Cj stroud and How houston is,
letting you, know not, happening not getting rid of. Them
that's not how this is going to go. Down And
(54:23):
i'm glad to hear. THAT i, mean there's a thought
process through this whole thing that all of a, sudden
the next quarterback is going to be your. Winner that's not.
True that's not. True and he's done a great great
job of leading that, organization not only as the, quarterback
but as the model of what a quarterback should be.
Speaker 4 (54:45):
Like in THE.
Speaker 1 (54:46):
Nfl we hear all these great stories about some of
these quarterbacks and what they do for their, city AND
cj has continued to be great in H. Town So
i'm glad to see. That but across THE, nfl there's
been some some news and some notes on a couple
players that are are probably at the end of their,
(55:07):
story and one of those guys is the legendary offensive
Lineman Trent. Williams Trent williams is at a point in
his contract to where they're going to probably end up
having to release him And Trent, Williams texas Guy, Longview
texas went to The university Of. Oklahoma he is one
(55:27):
of those offensive linemen THAT i will put up there
With Larry. Allen that's probably being one of the most
athletic and one of the best offensive linemen in the
game and what he was able to. Do but myr, ballot,
yeah oh for, sure first. Ballot this dude beat cancer
while he was playing. Football nobody knew until it was
near the. End he was, like, Yeah i've been dealing
(55:48):
with cancer the whole. Time he's been able to run
through some. Stuff but my question to you is where
does he end? Up is he a guy that he's
got a thirty million dollar cap thirty nine doll excuse?
Me where would you like to see him play in
the in THE? NFL i think that he needs to
(56:13):
go to a team that's ready to. Win you, KNOW
i can see him with the athleticism play At. Baltimore
he's got that kind of ability to move and trap
and pull to get in Get Lamar jackson's free. Reign you,
know don't sign another tight end or a high dollar wide. Receiver,
(56:37):
yep like go and get make your offensive line even.
Better and now you because They baltimore has a good
offensive line, already you Had Trent williams to, that then
you can run. FOREVER i, MEAN i think that would
be a good. Move and and there's a couple other.
Spots you look at What buffalo. Needs, buffalo you put
(57:00):
him With. Dawson he might be something that you look.
At you Go. Houston houston's got, money that's Been houston
definitely needs something. Great he's A texas. Guy, yeah he's From,
texas He's East. Texas he will be somebody that will
definitely protect and change the dynamic of That houston. Offense
(57:20):
mark's over, there smile like he stole something and got
away with. It i'm mad when last time he was
a free, agent he wanted to come To, houston and
Old bill O'Brien was, like let's look somewhere else and
trade all our draft. Picks, yep that's Why bill is
not there no, more still trying to fight. People but,
yeah you start to look around and you truly understand
(57:41):
That trevor, there he is trying to Fight trevor and
Telling mike to shout. Out, Listen, mike you always come
in here with these down. Questions If Trent williams ends
up In, houston will it'll already be? Fixed, Yeah like
you'll stop all of the, naysayers the negativity that that
(58:05):
rush that's been coming from the blind side ON. Cj stroud. Gone, Yeah,
yeah it's. Gone So, LIKE i, mean that's a move
that they need to really try to. Make they need
to do, Something so we'll see what ends up. Happening
Tank dale will be. Back you don't really need to
(58:26):
go out and get another wide, receiver you just need
the one As that scares. Me that's the one thing
that scares. ME i was Telling marcus that that there
was a. REPORT i don't know if it WAS ai
or if it was real, talk but they were talking
about trying to Give Tank dell a contract, extension And i'm, like, why,
why why would you do that because the risk of
(58:50):
him getting hurt is still, there and you, know usually
it's not the leg that you, hurt it's the opposite
side because you're been comping and that's when you have another. Injury,
well he hasn't had a healthy season so far in
his whole, career, right which is Why i'm, saying, LIKE
i love the excitement of. HIM i love what he
(59:12):
brought in those few games that he's been, there him
And kirk And collins. Together, yeah but like all three
of them that's walking. Wounded, yeah they they're.
Speaker 8 (59:22):
Masshit but when they're on the, film they ball and
Got higgins, too, right you got all The jalen's over, There,
noel you Got, Higgins you Got, Wattle, no you ain't got.
Speaker 1 (59:34):
Him but on the other, side going up north In,
dallas you start to look at The Dallas. Cowboys they
talked About Tyler, smith who ended up having offseason surgery
and now he is sitting there trying to get himself,
back but The cowboys planning to leave him at left.
Guard he is going to stay at left. Guard he's
(59:56):
done a Great he also, said, HEY i made The
Pro bowl guard three. TIMES i want to play guard
AND i want to play three. Times the money on that,
right don't move me because you want need to take
less of money. Exactly so now we start to look
at THE, nfl combine The texas players that are, there
we try to figure out who's going. Where we talked
(01:00:18):
about what The cowboys need to Do we talked a
little about about what The texans need to, do but
one name that is going to be on a lot
of draft boards Is Anthony Hill, junior the linebacker from
The university Of texas has. Done he did an unbelievable
job here AT. Ut he's got a great. Personality but
one thing's for, sure as he's at the, combine he
(01:00:39):
is glad he's not doing those offseason workouts with your,
Guy Tory.
Speaker 9 (01:00:44):
Becton everything's hard when it's one hundred and forty degrees,
outside so those moments are. Tough But i'm glad that's
in my. PAST i don't got to do, that none of.
That no more so them seven is the long run.
Shuttles i'm looking at Their. Instagram i'm seeing what they're
doing right.
Speaker 1 (01:00:59):
Now i'm, like, Yeah i'm, Yeah i'm done with that.
STUFF i. AIN'T i ain't got that in my future no.
More it's supposed to be. Chouting it's, Basically Couse.
Speaker 9 (01:01:07):
Becton it's gonna tell you to go let's say fifteen five,
teen right, hand left hand, touched and everybody on the
whole team has to do it perfect and it don't,
count and it's one hundred and forty degrees. Outside we
gotta do like max twenty of, Them like it increases
by the. Weekend it get it gets, rough it gets.
Rough so sometimes it gets a little. Physical but guess
(01:01:30):
what we get out of, there and it's it's a
it's a big it's a big part of the team.
Speaker 1 (01:01:33):
Bonding, hey it's one hundred and. Agreed because they on that.
Turn they on that. Turn, men and you went out
there and took pictures on that, turn and our shoes were,
melt and you look like a chocolate bar that was,
melting a melting. CANDLE i looked like a milk dug
(01:01:54):
that them ants was about to get on BECAUSE i
was out there like car melt melting, BHY i was.
Hurting you, said, no, man we need to hurry up
and get done with. You, yeah we need to hurry.
Out they kept trying to change, angles SO i can
just imagine what he talking, about running up into that
fit with pads. On oh come, on, MAN i know he,
(01:02:14):
SAID i ain't got to do. That that's in my.
Past he wearing sweaters and winter jackets in the one
hundred and fifty three. Heats coming up, next we got
The World's Strongest man bringing you his world's strongest take
right here on the morning kickoff On Sports RADIO am
thirteen hundred is on and always freak in THAT I
Heart radio. App you heard. It that's what he.
Speaker 2 (01:02:34):
Do w W.
Speaker 1 (01:02:35):
E hall Of Famer World's Strongest, man D Mark henry
brings you his world's strongest. Take take it, away big,
fellow Part, yes you know what time it? Is What,
Thomas it's time for the world's strongest take by the
world's strongest. Man. Myckess back then they didn't know, me,
(01:02:58):
huh but now That i'm, hot they all on. Me
well another othertion of the world's strongest. Take and, guys
this is going to hit close to. Home The San
Antonio spurs are forty two and. Sixteen they're on a
(01:03:23):
ten game winning street and a lot of the pronosticators
are saying that outside of The Oklahoma City, thunder there's
not another team that's as deep as they. Are we
actually said This, monday you and our, hearts we talked
(01:03:47):
about the depth and the Same San Antonio spurs last
night went against The Toronto raptors And Victor wind And
Young i'm his legs look a little. Heavy WHEN i say,
HEAVY i mean he went three of twelve. Shots castle
(01:04:12):
played a lot of. Minutes we talked about him On.
MONDAY i said, HARD i was. Wrong there's no way
you should Trade castle facts because these guys have been
carrying the. Load Kelvin johnson another guy that's logging in
a lot of, minutes playing multiple. Positions but the depth
(01:04:35):
of this, Team Darren, Fox vaselle and the young, guy
mister Young Legs, harp they stepped. Up all of them
shot above five. Hundred when you're shooting seven of eleven
(01:04:58):
and eight of thirteen and eight or, fifteen it's pretty
hard to. Lose but that's what you got from The,
spurs and where even When victor Winding yama being off
and not having the night that we're used to seeing him,
have he still had eight, rebounds three, assists and three.
(01:05:22):
Blocks and that's an off night for. Him, guys that's
an off. Night my take is, This i'm gonna go
with The. PRONOUNCIGATORS i think that you need to go
ahead and start and looking at what hotel you're gonna
(01:05:45):
stay at during THE nba playoffs because the championship is
gonna come Through San. Antonio hards what say. You that's,
bold that's, bold but it's not. Crazy it's not crazy
at all because of the fact that the way that
The seer was going. For The San Antonio spurs are
(01:06:07):
a team, that As i've said to you along the,
way what we've been able to witness from them during
this time is something that has been, real real. Thoughtful
when you look at the depths in which they were
able to build this, team and every time you kept, saying,
MAN i think they need to make a, MOVE i
(01:06:28):
think they need to do, this And i'm, like well For,
jannis And jannis is still not playing. Exactly and not only,
that the way that this team is, constructed the way
that they, run the way that they, move the way
that they are. Connected that is a team that seems
very very similar to a team that won the championship
(01:06:52):
last year in THE Okc thunder with. Depth and you
also go back and you look at who they've played
and how they've played against those teams that are considered
POSSIBLE nba, champions one of those being THE Okc, thunder
(01:07:12):
where they've beaten them four times this year. Already then
they went up Too detroit and played against a team
that tried to bully, them and they answered the call there.
Too and now you talk about the legs look a
little tired in certain, situations but they have so much.
(01:07:33):
Depth so if they need to Sit winby now they
feel good about it to sit on the. Rules but
he can because he Is he's played, it he's done,
it and you've seen the struggle in which he's had
to go through these last couple of. Games but the
realization is you're not far off in your thought process
(01:07:57):
of trying to find a way to get those tickets
and those hotels In San, antonio because if this team
continues this trajectory playing together as a team and not
worrying about who gets the, highlights because everybody on that
team is saying the same thing that we. Do we
(01:08:18):
know we Got, Wemby i'm not worried about. Him we
just need to do our part because that alien is
going to be in the middle to help us every
step of the. Way, yeah all of those guys when
goes to the, bench they become. Faster. Yeah, normally when
your best player leaves the, floor you take a step.
(01:08:40):
Back you change the dynamic. Totally when they go to
a three guard monster because that's what it. Is it's
not with the second. Unit your best. Players they try
to risk them when risk their best player when you rest.
Yours so that's also a ploy to get people off
(01:09:01):
the floor if they're. Hot so The spurs they can
play either, game speed, game power, game big, small whatever you.
Need and that's what it. Takes versatility and. Depth, man
this is what it is all. About i'm excited about
it because basketball season continues continues to bring us more and,
(01:09:25):
more whether it's in college because we're getting ready For March,
madness or whether it's for THE nba because we're not
too far from the. Playoffs when we come Back texas women's,
Basketball big matchup, Tonight big big, matchup nine, o'clock we'll
hear from Coach vick and let's just say he's not
happy right here on the morning kickoff On Sports RADIO
(01:09:47):
am thirteen hundred To zone and always free on The iHeartRadio.
App man Oh, man Oh man missed any parts of this?
Show what the heck is going? On will you? Do
you should have been locked in all more than. Long
we had our Guy Eric henry Of goods two or
seven breaking down The texas men's basketball team as they
(01:10:10):
took a loss last night to the number seven ranked
and defending national Champion Florida. Gators we also got a
chance to talk to Coach Jim slosnagel for Our thursday
conversation as he broke down his team and it was.
Excellent but if you missed any part of, that get
over to the podcast page wherever you get your, podcasts
(01:10:33):
and of course you gotta always get over to that
always Free iHeartRadio app for all of the. Latest speaking
of the, latest this might be the latest basketball game
in the history of basketball games ON us. Soil WHEN
i MEAN, Us i'm talking about right, here because you
can go and play In hawaii and the time zones
(01:10:54):
are gonna be. Different but you're not starting at nine.
O'clock your body might tell you you're starting at nine,
o'clock but you are not starting at nine. O'clock and right,
now The texas women's basketball team plays tonight against The
university Of georgia nine. O'clock did you hear me Say
Jeorgier LIKE i Was Tyler perry at nine o'clock? Tonight
(01:11:14):
and this is kind of, crazy But Vick schaeffer has
done an unbelievable job of building this program and building
the fan base at The university Of. Texas he's done
this ten thousand for ten, thousand and what that is
is he donate ten thousand dollars for ten thousand fans
(01:11:34):
if they show up at certain. Games, well he's doing it.
Again this program is at an all time high as
far as attendance for women's. Basketball but now he's still doing.
It and he was asked by our, Guy Danny davis
of The Austin American, statesman why are you still doing
the ten k for ten?
Speaker 4 (01:11:51):
K i love what the impact is that The Neighborhood
Long orne program has in our, community AND i think
our our supporters of this event do as. Well you,
know Now maxwell has really been a big part of
helping me raise money for this event since day. ONE
(01:12:15):
i remember the first, time you know that we did.
This you, KNOW i had talked To nile and he,
said give me thirty minutes And i'll call you right.
Back and when he called me back thirty minutes, later
he had sixty thousand dollars. Raised and then you've, got you,
know other people in our community that have just really
(01:12:38):
jumped on and been big supporters of this event And
Silver spurs have been unbelievable and again for The Neighborhood
long worn. Program from WHAT i, understand you, know this
has really benefited their ability to impact our our community
(01:13:01):
and the children of this. Community and this is a you,
know this is an entity that's always been important To
Texas athletics.
Speaker 1 (01:13:12):
For a very very very long.
Speaker 4 (01:13:13):
Time but don't know That Texas athletics has been able
to support them like we've been able to the past few.
Years So i'm just really, Again, uh it's an honor
for us to have an opportunity to help this this this,
program and and again we appreciate all that they do
(01:13:35):
for the youth and our. Community and, uh you, know
these are our leaders of tomorrow and if we can
help in some way elevate them and give them, opportunities,
man that's a pretty special. Thing so it's been really.
Cool And i'll call me this morning, ALREADY i mean
he called me, said, Hey, VIC i, know you, know
(01:13:55):
things have changed a little. Bit we don't do it
now for the for the trying to get ten thousand,
fans but we're still going to do it to.
Speaker 1 (01:14:03):
Help support the Neighborhood longhorn.
Speaker 4 (01:14:05):
Program he, Said i've already been in touch With Chuck,
nash who's a good friend of, his who's the season
ticket holder of, mine and he, Said chuck's, in and you,
know he, said we're making those calls and we're going
to get it done. Again so it's pretty. Cool it
definitely is pretty.
Speaker 1 (01:14:21):
Cool but the most important part is that you're doing
it for the Neighborhood, longhorns and they have grown that
part of it as well and given access to so
many different. Things but he was also, asked so did
this nine o'clock, start vic did The did you get
a chance to talk to THE sec and ask why
or what are your thoughts on? This the answer is,
(01:14:43):
no they did not ask.
Speaker 4 (01:14:45):
Me you know what's Even what's even, More i've voiced
my my my concern a month ago on certain things
and that hadn't. Changed but you, know playing at nine
tomorrow night is ten O'clock georgia. Time that's their. Bodies
(01:15:06):
but then you're going to turn around and make me
play at eleven am On sunday.
Speaker 1 (01:15:09):
MORNING i mean it just on the. Road SO i JUST.
Speaker 4 (01:15:17):
I think it's something that has to be addressed in
our spring. Meetings, again we addressed it two years. AGO
i don't know that anybody even realizes that or remembers,
it but we did address it two years ago in
our spring meetings as a coaches. Group so, well you
know this is it's just part of. It will continue
(01:15:39):
to show up whenever they tell us to show.
Speaker 2 (01:15:41):
Up.
Speaker 1 (01:15:43):
Not because he wants. To, no they. Didn't they didn't ask.
Me they didn't ask. Me as a matter of, fact
we addressed this years, ago and think about it is
if you would have saw his, face what the. Response you,
know you can see that he was searching for the
right way without getting, fine he ain't want to do
(01:16:06):
the beast. Mode he was, like, no they didn't ask.
Me i've been trying to figure this out for so
long and why this has happened and what can we?
Do and there's just so much that goes into it as.
Well and he was, right, like you think about this time.
Zone drugia will be In they're ahead of us an, hour,
(01:16:27):
right so it's gonna feel like ten, o'clock and when
they finished the, game it'll be. Midnight it'll be after. Midnight,
yes it's, ridiculous to be quite honest with, YOU i
was thinking about going to the, game and you know
that normally about nine, Thirty i'm already in my. Pajama
well that's Why i'm kind of curious to your thought.
(01:16:50):
Process it's the last women's, game, man like we gotta support. Him,
yeah that's. Good we also got a show at seven
am tomorrow. MORNING i might be. Late that does not surprise.
Me the jam when was our? Late? Ever? Huh what
you go?
Speaker 5 (01:17:10):
