did not dive in to all the greatness that was

best time that I've been doing.

about this, and you've heard Craig Wait goes on vacation
for two weeks because he's like, I'm not doing anything because.

time in the history the World Cup was great. Well,
we had World Cup, we had World Baseball collapsic, we
had the Olympics.

I'm living in the now. I'm talking about the last
five days. I have watched three A and M games,
OU games. Yesterday I watched two games from Old Miss
and LSU and.

I'm watching.

That's that's that's what's on television. That's the only sports
that's on is replays. No again, I mean baseball. I
was about to say the Yankees did win a game
finally after thirty seven losses.

Yeah, they're mashing it. They're mashing it everybody. This would
have been the perfect time for me to be playing
for the Yankees farm system because I would have got

But we are getting We are on the precipice of
the college football season. We are ready for NFL action.
There is so much.

I want to get into this because.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
As we said, college football is very very close in Texas.
Football is obviously part of the conversation. But ESPN Insights
has the released their analytics. You know how I feel
about those all the time. Their Football Power Index about

(05:59):
teams that will reach that has the percentages the best
chances to reach the college football playoffs, as you know,
and it's an expanded one.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
So there's gonna be some names in here that you're like, wait,
what happened with twenty eight teams?

Speaker 1 (06:14):
Now, not that not that many, I mean, but the
one with the lowest percentage of making it is a
team from the state of Texas and that is the
SMU Mustangs. SMU R at Lashley Jennings at the quarterback position.
This is a team that continues to be part of

(06:35):
the conversation. They come in at eighteen percent and they
are the twentieth team to be in the conversation. Other
SEC teams Tennessee comes in with twenty percent, Ole Miss
comes in at twenty three percent, Oklahoma twenty eight percent,

(06:58):
Texas A and M thirty nine percent, along with LSU
Alabama forty one percent, Georgia sixty four percent chance, and
the Texas Longhorns lead the SEC with the chance to
make the playoffs at seventy percent. Ohio State is number

(07:20):
one at seventy six percent, so that game Week two
will make a huge difference when Texas and Ohio State
match up. Here at DKR, Notre Dame very talented football
team comes in at seventy four percent, Texas Tech fifty
eight percent, and the defending national champion Indiana comes in

at fifty seven percent. Why did you wait on Texas Tech? Well,
because I was going all SEC. First, I went with
SMU just because they were the bottom tier at number twenty,
but after that I went all SEC team ok Then
I hopped in and let texts I thought you you're
still holding no holding Gridge against Joey. Now Joey's fine.

Him and Sarka goad buddies, He's all right. They chummed
up again, so they're back together. So it's all about
what's happening now. To your point, you sit and you
start to understand that football season, everybody, as I've always said,
everybody at the beginning of the year, think that their
team is it. They got a chance. This is what

it's all about. Let's make this happen. But the reality
of it is, there's some headliners in this conversation that
Ohio State at seventy six percent is something to think
about because if you look at the Big Ten, you
got Ohio State at seventy six percent, you got Oregon
at sixty five percent, Indiana at fifty seven percent, Michigan

at twenty three percent, and Penn State coming in at
twenty two percent. So you have all of these different teams.
But it looks to me like the teams are going
to come from the Big ten and the SEC. You
dudes have sprinkling one Big twelve team. You have an

ACC team with Miami coming in, another talented football team
and Clemson coming in at twenty two percent. I think
Miami is going to be a better team than everybody
thinks because the quarterback play was sporadic last year. Everybody
talks about Beck like he was I'm telling you he's

(09:41):
the best shot putter in football. He throw the football,
not put and I think that accuracy at quarterback could
make that team deadly. Yeah, Messiah is going to be
pretty dog on good there. But the analytics always look
good at the very beginning of the year, and we'll

I'll bookmark this to see how close they were when
the season comes to an end. But we are thirty
nine days away from Texas taking on Texas State. Here
at DKR Texas Memorial Stadium. We are no, it's not
even Memorial Stadium anymore, DKR the football Stadium.

All right, let's get into this conversation because I want
to talk about the matchup between Texas and Texas State. Yes,
Texas is a thirty and a half point favorite if
you look at DraftKings and ESPN, which means nothing until
they get on the field, and we can see exactly
how this Texas football team has jailed as they will

(12:18):
get to work next week. But a lot of folks
are going to be talking about Arch Manning, and rightfully so,
what Arch Manning's done and how he's progressed throughout his
time as the quarterback here at the University of Texas.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
For those that want to.

Speaker 1 (12:39):
Discredit, as they like to say, what he was able
to do, you sound foolish if you are thinking that
watching the games and watching him play, that you don't
understand how good this young man developed into the player
that he told to be the showing up every single week.
And I got a chance to sit down on our

(13:00):
heard you guys play the audio of myself and Arch
Manning and his personality. Let you know that he is.
He's good at what he does, He's comfortable in his skin.
That he sounded more than a quarterback. He's definitely more
than that, and he sounded very mature.

Speaker 3 (13:20):
He's done, He's gone through this.

Speaker 1 (13:21):
He talked about not wanting to do SEC media days,
but he talked to his family and they were like, no,
you need to do this because now you are that guy.
So now you look at it and you say, okay,
arch Manning. We're going to continue to have a lot
of conversations about him throughout the year. But I wanted
to bring up something about this Brad Jackson, the quarterback

(13:44):
from Texas State. Now, when you think of Texas State,
most of the time you think this game is going
to be one that just gonna run through there and
dynam Yeah, Mark is hopeful. I know Mark is like,
we're running them out of there. Hey, but I'm that
quarterback is dynamite. Yes he I mean he's like dynamite too.

(14:05):
He's not big, but he is good. And I've done
Flute was little dun Flute would bust your face open though, right,
And this guy is very similar to him in the
sense that not only can he scramble, but he always
keeps his eyes up.

Speaker 3 (14:23):
Feel like he's a good quarterback.

Speaker 1 (14:24):
Yes, And just to give you the numbers to put
it in perspective, so you're are aware of this, and
we'll talk about him again right before this ball game.
He accounted for thirty eight touchdowns last year for Texas State.
Thirty I said slow. He accounted Jackson. Brad Jackson, the

quarterback from San Antonio Reagan, accountant for thirty eight touchdowns
last season for Texas State.

Bobcats Claude Helper.

Speaker 1 (15:00):
He also had three thousand, nine hundred and sixty eight
total yards of offense.

Speaker 3 (15:08):
That's a school record.

Speaker 1 (15:09):
Those thirty eight touchdowns he's responsible for school record. He
had seventeen rushing touchdowns, Yeah, seventeen. He ran for seven
hundred and forty four yards on the ground. He had
a seventy one point three completion rate, which two is

(15:29):
a single season record at Texas State. Twenty one passing touchdowns,
and he threw for three thousand, two hundred and twenty four.

Speaker 3 (15:39):
It's gonna be more. It's gonna be more.

Speaker 2 (15:41):
Of the same this year, except for the first game.
He's gonna have a reality start. He's gonna start after DKR.

Speaker 1 (15:52):
Well, and it's ironic that you say that because their
second game happens to be against the team that Texas
their third game, they will be playing UTSA their second
game right after playing the University of Texas. So as
you sit here today and we ponder all of these

(16:14):
games and these quarterbacks and the right to be in
the playoffs, and how many games is gonna be enough
to get there, You're gonna see a true dual threat
quarterback in the very first game of the season. You're
gonna see an opportunity for Will Muschamp to design a
defense that can handle a dual threat quarterback because that

(16:38):
is gonna play in to some of the matchups that
you have later in the year.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
I'm gonna tell you something, If Colin Simmons and Bobbles
are running around back there, that's first and second level. Yeah,
I'm not only not gonna keep my head on the swivel,
but the ball coming.

Speaker 3 (16:57):
Out of my hand pretty high.

Speaker 1 (17:00):
My point of being able to start runner off against
a team with a dual threat quarterback that you will
be able to gauge what some of these other quarterbacks
you're gonna see later on in the year. Now, obviously
he's not gonna be Trinidad Chamberless. We understand that he's

(17:20):
not built like that. He's not Julian saying. But you're
gonna have an opportunity to formulate some game plans and
recognize certain traits or maybe even certain schemes that may
may be able to mirror some of the things that
you want to do for later on in the season. Well,
it's funny you mentioned the word mirror, because that's kind

(17:43):
of like the spy terminology. I see some of that
sometimes on third down, especially third down, you put the spy,
but first second down, you put your ears back and
you try to go get him.

Speaker 3 (17:59):
You know, Like, I think that's gonna.

Speaker 1 (18:01):
Be the the consensus of what Texas is gonna do
on first and second down.

Speaker 3 (18:10):
They're gonna bump and run.

Speaker 2 (18:12):
They're gonna send guys, and it's not gonna come from
the same place every time, but most of the time
you're gonna see it come right up the middle because
they want you to feel much Champ wants you to
feel the pressure of I see you coming right down
my neck.

Speaker 3 (18:33):
And I think that's a great strategy. I mean, there'll be.

Speaker 2 (18:36):
Times where Colin Simmons will have outside containment that he
won't be rushing because right in the quarterback's face he'll
see a corner coming because they they send that star position.
They send him at you. So you got three guys
that can come from different directions. Colin Simmons on one side,

(18:59):
you got the star position whoever you put in a
star position that comes periodically, and right up the middle
you're gonna have Bowels or ty Anthony Smith coming to
pay you a visit. And that's without Lance Jackson developing

(19:19):
into what I think he's going to develop into, which
is another star like Colin Simmons.

Speaker 3 (19:27):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (19:27):
Like he may not be Colin Simmons, but he's going
to be Colin Simmons light well. Colin Simmons is definitely
on a mission. Getting a chance to talk to him
at SEC media days, looking at his demeanor, He's all
business all the time, and that's done something that I've
been very impressed with. But talking about Texas State and

(19:49):
the expectations, Texas State last year went to another ball game,
finished the year seven and six, was in every single
ball game, but ended up going four and for in
conference play. But this is a team that has the
ability to the recruited well.

Speaker 3 (20:05):
GJ. Kenny is really dialed in with.

Speaker 1 (20:08):
The Texas coaches, so Texas high school coaches, so he's
getting an opportunity to get those types of players But
when you look at this team and the thought process
of their first year in the PAC twelve, new season,
new goals, new thoughts, this is gonna be a big
challenge for them. They're gonna come in here and play.

(20:29):
You already know that they're gonna understand what it is.
They'll probably pull out all the stops early in the
ball game just to see what they can get and
try to fool Texas. But during the long run and
the long scheme of it all, this is gonna be
a tough road to hold. But I just wanted to
make sure that people obviously look at Brad Jackson as

(20:50):
some body respective that can definitely put you on edge
a little bit. They will definitely put you on edge.
So we'll see what ends up happening with that. But
that quarterback position is something that Texas State fans are
really really excited about.

Well, I hope this is a stage for him so
people can see who he is.

Yeah, because us here in Central Texas we know.

Speaker 3 (21:17):
Who he is.

Speaker 1 (21:18):
Yeah, we've seen We've seen all the results. Everybody else
have it. Yeah, they'll get it. They will with Texas.

Yep.

The nation will be watching that first game of the
year and Brad Jackson will be across from arch Man.
They won't be tackling each other, but they'll be battling
head to head to see what happens next. Speaking of

so that's only one thing that we can do, and
let's talk to our guy, Joe Cook of Inside Texas,
and Joe, I wanted to get into this conversation real
quick because there's so much that is happening and football
season is upon us. The NFL is there, college football
is here. Texas gets back after it next week. But

(22:22):
all that being said, the SEC voting came out and
Texas came in second to Georgia. And this kind of
goes back to your talk about in order to become
the champ, you got to beat the champ.

Speaker 4 (22:34):
Yeah, and for some reason, the Georgia world wants it
everybody to think that they've got picked like sixth or
something like that. It's really weird to see all the
Georgia people just kind of be like, Oh, everybody's here
to crown Texas and granted, like you know, if you're
finishing second, I mean, somebody's voting for you for first
place plenty. But I think most of the world, including

(22:57):
the Texas world, knows that George is the team to
be in this conference until they are. And you know,
with college football in the way it works, past performances
are not an indicator of a result in the future.
But Kirby Smart does things a little bit differently than
everybody in the SEC. You know, they don't really go
to the portal. What they pay to their roster, they

(23:19):
pay to retain it. It's very very talented and they
have a system that works. Texas a little bit different strategy.
This year they went to the portal a little bit more,
but you know, most of the guys that they're going
to be relying on are a lot of the guys
that are going to be rely relying on we're homegrown
as well. So you know that that poll looks about
right after Ole miss being number three, is a little

(23:43):
bit surprising. I thought we might have seen a and
M or lsu there, especially with the Lane Kiffenhite, but
a lot of faith in Trinidad Chambliss and you saw
that with the all SEC teams as well.

Speaker 3 (23:53):
Joe.

Speaker 1 (23:54):
It is funny that everybody complains about the portal situation,
but now even Dabbosweny is using it. Everybody's using it,
but everybody's not developing the players that they get out
of the portal and Texas has.

Speaker 3 (24:11):
Been able to do that.

Speaker 1 (24:13):
Do you see that it for the foreseeable future that
that narrative changing because.

Speaker 3 (24:22):
Of the success for Texas? You know, I think I
do like Start's approach.

Speaker 4 (24:29):
I think there's a lot of volatility if you go
and get a very just highly portaled roster, you know.
I think that's what has made Lane Kiffen and then
also Kurt Signetti so impressive. Is that that they and
granted that Kurt Signetti brought in a lot of James
Madison players that he had a good understanding on, but

(24:52):
what they're able to do to get a lot of
different players to come together in one year is very
very impressive. I think they're there is some volatility in
that and to those coaches credit, we haven't seen that
volatility play out in either of their programs.

Speaker 3 (25:07):
They've established a very very high floor so far.

Speaker 4 (25:10):
But I think there is some value, especially in a
world where hey, you do have to kind of understand
that money is very bountiful but not limitless, that you
got to make sure that you spend your money in
the right spots and if you can go get those recruits.
That that's the difference between old miss and and LSU.

(25:31):
It's why Lane Kiffen took the LSU job. You can
go to LSU and you can get that five star. Yeah,
he's still going to be expensive, but he's going to
be on your roster. And then you don't have to
probably go at a super premium price to get him,
you know, on your team. You get him at a
pretty reasonable price to keep him on your team, whereas

(25:51):
an old Miss Lane Kiffin had to, you know, probably
pay a little bit of a premium to get guys
like Jackson Dart and to you know, keep guys and
just get players like that, those star players, you know.
I think that's what Texas is doing and it's a
good strategy. But if you do have the financial means
and might, and then you also have some roster needs.

Speaker 3 (26:14):
Hey, if you're a wide receiver need it needs.

Speaker 4 (26:17):
To be filled, Okay, then go get Cam Coleman to
fill it instead of getting some guy who was, you know,
moderately productive at the you know, a power conference level,
and you know it's just a replacement player.

Speaker 3 (26:29):
There's a little bit of both.

Speaker 4 (26:30):
I think the draft excuse me, see Sharkeysian calling it like,
you know, you have your first round picks, you have
your later round picks, and you have free agency.

Speaker 3 (26:39):
You gotta start looking at it that way. Well, Joe,
I'm glad you brought that up.

Speaker 1 (26:43):
And coach Shark, he's been making a lot of noise
this offseason and voicing his opinion. But a lot of
folks are are are little skeptical about what he said
about the roster management, and sometimes you gotta let guys go.
What were your thoughts when you heard him say that
and the backlash that he was getting.

Speaker 4 (27:05):
I think it was a good point. I don't know
if the words were the exact right ones, right, because again,
when you're when you're Texas.

Speaker 3 (27:12):
You you have a lot of money.

Speaker 4 (27:14):
Like when we're talking about the most you know, expensive
rosters on the sport this year. Texas is going to
be one of those names mentioned. They try to be
judicious with that money, and I understand.

Speaker 3 (27:26):
Why for for a variety of reasons, but they do
have a lot of money.

Speaker 4 (27:32):
And you know what, I think if he had framed
the conversation maybe a little bit as a we went
out to try to upgrade our roster instead of we
tried to you know, moneyball, not moneyball it, but like,
just try to make sure that these guys who we
were already paying, you know, weren't dragging us into cap hell,

(27:53):
I guess to say, and then.

Speaker 3 (27:55):
Limited their ability to go get other players.

Speaker 4 (27:57):
Like I don't know, I think he was being very,
very very honest, but he did open himself up for
some opponents and be like, oh, you're not going to
be developed that Texas are going to.

Speaker 3 (28:08):
Kick it to the curb.

Speaker 4 (28:09):
I don't think that's what he was trying to say,
and I don't think that's what he said. I think
it was a little bit of a clunky way of
saying like, look, I wanted to upgrade the roster because
these players weren't good enough and they weren't because they
went nine to three in the regular season and make
the playoffs. So I don't really disagree with what he said,
but I think there were some better words that he

(28:31):
could have chosen.

Speaker 3 (28:32):
And hey, that's the magic of lives television.

Speaker 1 (28:35):
Yeah, I wanted to ask you this too. We're talking
to Joe Cook of Inside Texas. You can follow him
at Joseph Cook eighty nine. As we get closer and
closer to the start of the football season, give us
one Longhorn who isn't getting the recognition right now, but
we'll be talking about a little bit later.

Yeah, you know what I'm going to go on defense,
I'm gonna say it's juice at linebacker. You know, Rasheem
Biles was obviously the big portal picked up in ty
Anthony Smith, who missed a lot of spring recovering from
a surgery, was, you know, an impact player in the
bowl game and is going to be an impact player
on this defense. But I think Jews Cryer at that
middle linebacker spot gives a little bit of that, you know,

(29:20):
classic SEC thumper. There is some limitation with that when
especially when you're thinking about playing in space and defending
the pass.

Speaker 3 (29:28):
But he is a player who's done.

Speaker 4 (29:29):
Pretty well so far in these summer workouts and established
himself pretty well during his time on campus. I've been
willing to think that the problems at Florida State were
not because of him, and then also that he's going
to succeed in an environment that's not Florida State in
the current landscape, and it seems like he's going to

even though he plays Star, I don't know how much
he's going to come off the field this year. I
think he may be someone that they like being able
to bump out the corner when they go against some
of these heavier offenses, and they because they still want
him on the field and they value is play making

and shiny things are sometimes easy to gravitate towards but

a tough spot, and I think they're going to continue

the NFL. Now he thinks he's gonna come into college
football with the NIL try to manage it as they
would at the New England Patriots. And this has been terrible. Well,
to make matters worse, Mike Lombardi, his right hand man,

his general manager, has been placed on administrative leave. The
university did not say he was suspended, but he is
on paid administrative leave. Lombardy and Belichick have been together
for a while. This is terrible, terrible timing hair as
we get ready to start the football season. Nobody, no

coaches can talk about this. Staff members or student athletes
will be able to comment on the matter until we
will though, til the review is done. Mark, you and
I've talked about this off air on air. It's not
about the ex'es and o's anymore. It's about stability Bill

Belichick since he has been at North Carolina. Going back
to the stories about his young girlfriend being around acting
like she was the owner, operator and the title holder
of the university was a distraction from the very beginning.
They did not go out and win. He's been losing

players and losing ball games. And the thing that really
pisses me off, pisces me off to no end, is
they wanted to get rid of mac Brown, somebody who
is a Hall of Famer in college football and understands
the dynamics.

They wanted to get rid of they got rid of.

True that, that true that, And I was aggravated that
that that they got rid of mc brown first off,
And it's been a disaster.

Jayden Blue on the same play page as the team.
He's a home run hitter, little wiggle, a little to

a conversation last week where they were saying that for
the first time in history. You had a four thousand dollars,
four thousand yard passer, a thousand yard back, two thousand
yard receivers, and you didn't make the playoffs.

Well, they're going to add to that with Jaden Blue
being the home run hitter, and they're talking about Trigg
being the second second tight end that basically is a receiver.

He played at Baylor. Got a chance to see him
multiple times. I even got a chance to talk to
his offensive coordinator. He's a special, special talent. A lot
of people were surprised he didn't get drafted because he's
that freaky of an athlete. Well, it was also some
speculation of some shady going zones in his past, and

people don't want to take a chance on that.

Oh, you end up in a Belichick situation. But this
is the NFL. They always taking chances on they take

defensive line. You brought up, the offensive line. We've already
talked enough about that offense. The only missing question from
last year's team with the Dallas Cowboys was all about
can the defense stop a nosebleed? And they could not
and that was the biggest thing. So a lot of

pressure is on Christian Parker this upcoming season, and whether
it's fair or not, he's looked at as the golden child.
He needs to come in and be like Eddie Murphy.

They not only have they been missing a defense, but
they've been missing a defensive structure. They brought in three

expected to hear this. Jerry Jones has never allowed since
Jimmy Johnson, a defensive or offensive.

and got some very very talented guys, and they retained

get into that in just a moment. They needed a
lot of these guys. This is a team which also
we have guys that are trying to get an extra
year of eligibility. There's no room for those guys to
come back to this university. I don't mean it in

a disrespectful way, but you're looking at a Texas basketball
team that has fifteen guys on their roster. They got
five guards, five forwards, and five bigs that are considered bigs.
You look at what you've been able to see from
David Punch. He is sixty seven two forty five. He

came in through the transfer portal. You look at Matus Vocatitis,
seven foot two fifty five. But the story to me
is the weight gain of a lot of these players.
Mikey lewis sixty three point eighty five. He gained ten
pounds since he's been at the University of Texas. Isaiah
Johnson six to two, by the way, the smallest player

on the team is six to two, one eight two.
He gained twelve pounds since he's been here on the
University at the university. You got Austin Gooseby who is
six foot five. He's gained twenty pounds since he's been
here at Texas. Then you go to your forwards. Elijah
Freeman six' eight two oh five gained twenty pounds since

he's been. Here Amari, evans he's sixty five to twenty
and Bo ogden Bo ogden has is sixty six two point.
Fifteen he's gained twenty. Pounds And Joe sterling sixty, four
