play you, he always refers to you as royalty as
your tenis and yes, he said tenis, Yes.

I've been knowing lur Gosh since about nineteen eighty six
something like that, and when she was married to Keith,
and you know, that's when I met her and we've
been friends ever since. She's a sweetheart.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
Yeah, this is gonna be really one fantastic show and
a little reminiscing because I just so warmly remember the
mid eighties and coming into all the just exciting time
for country music and the fact that you're you're coming
into the business like with a ton of great stars.
(02:03):
Now they may not have thought they were great stars
at the time, but they all really blossomed into something
amazing yourself, Randy Travis, Marty Stewart, I mean, it was
a great time to be around those great artists.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Yeah, we had a blast. Dwight, Yoakum, Steve or We're
all and you know what, we're all still great friends.
All this time. We talked to each other often, and
I talked to Dwight on the phone a lot. You know,
he's out in California and I don't see him very often,
(02:38):
but we're still big friend. He sang a do it
with me on my last album, So we keep up
with each other. And I see Steve at the Opry
a lot, and I see Marty at the Opry a lot,
and I hugged Randy Travis neck last week. We were
attending the service for Don So it's friend of ours,
(03:01):
great songwriter passed away, and so I saw Randy. So
I see him several times a year. So yeah, we're
all still buddies. It's great. It's a great feeling.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
Well, can we just talk about the Opry for a moment,
because like, why did that take so long for you
to become a member? I mean, you've been working there
a lot. It seems like the perfect pairing. And my gosh,
Vince Gill gets to induct you. That's so awesome.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Oh, it's wonderful. You know, I've been going out to
the Ipry forty years, so you know, they finally pulled
the trigger. And Vince is another guy I've known probably
since eighty seven, maybe eighty. Said, well, I guess we
even met before either one of us had any hits.
(03:50):
So I guess we go back to about eighty four,
and he's one of my best friends. And I couldn't
think of anybody I would rather have indug me in him.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
Yeah, what a cool what a cool thing to kind
of have on your resume. I mean, I just love
the grand ole Opery. It's full of such great talent
and it just makes sense to me. And again I said, like,
what took you guys so long? Sometimes I do see
people that I'm like, wow, they've been here for forever.
Come on, now, get around to it.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Yeah, well, gosh, I've done the Opery probably five hundred
times something like that. You know, we're doing it tomorrow night.
One cool thing about tomorrow night is Leroy Parnell called
me and asked me if i'd do it, do it
with him tomorrow night, so I'll get to see him.
And I've been knowing him since eighty six probably, so

that's gonna be fun too.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
Yeah, nobody plays the slide guitar like Leroy Barnell so good.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Yeah, he's great. He really is great. So yeah, we're
all we're all still around, we're all still working, we'll
still love each other. And yeah, it's a great it's
a great thing. And the Opry is one big family.
I know it's kind of a cliche, but it really
is one big family. And we all have a lot

of fun and we all care a lot about each other.
So I got a lot of friends round and about
and I'm so thankful for that.
Speaker 1 (05:23):
Well, right, you keep on a work in I mean,
people will recognize a ton of your material that you're
going to do at Riverside Casino on the sixteenth. My
favorite song, literally, my favorite song, Tell It like It
used to be. It's written so well. I just love
that song. But because you're with Laurie Morgan, and again
(05:44):
I'm not trying to give anything away, but because you're
with Lori or is there any possibility you guys might
be getting together to do Don't go out even though
that's a Tanya Tucker duet.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
No, we haven't rehearsed that that would be a good
one to do. And you know, I'll play all the
hits people expect to hear, and she will too, and
it's gonna be a good show. People are gonna be entertained.
I don't think anybody's gonna walk away.
Speaker 1 (06:12):
No, no, no, it's gonna be really, really great. But
let's talk about what's been going on now, because I mean,
it's not just the hits that people remember from like
the eighties and the nineties. You've been working this whole time,
and it's not just out on the road. You've been
working like all kinds of things serious exam. You've got
(06:33):
a great show there, I mean, talk a little bit
about that.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Well, you know, I play it's called live Wire, and
the whole idea is that I play live cuts from
artists live albums, and I usually feature six artists per show.
So it's like going to concert to concert the concert
and it's pretty good. I've been doing gosh almost eight
(07:00):
years now. It's just flown by, and I have a
lot of fun doing that. And then I always interview
somebody or talk. Actually it's more like a conversation. I'll
I'll call up an old friend and ask them if
they'll talk to them for about twenty minutes. So you know,
I got everybody's phone number after all these years, so
(07:23):
I had no problem picking up the phone and calling somebody.
And I went down to Muscleshells, Alabama, and to Fame
Studios and a couple of years ago and cut fourteen
nineteen sixties soul songs. I grew up in the sixties,
(07:46):
and I grew up with a transistor radio glued to
my ear, and I listened to all kinds of music, gospel,
rock and roll, country, all all kinds of stuff, and
this old music was one of my favorite things. So
I cut It's the nineteen sixties soul tribute album, and
(08:09):
again I was talking to Dwight Yoakam and he asked
me what I've been up to, and I told him
about that, and he asked me if i'd cut a
certain song, and I said, yeah, man, matter of fact,
I did. And he asked me if he could sing
on it, and I went, heck, yeah, And so I
sent the tracks out of Hollywood and he sang a
duet and it went back and sang harmony on everything.
He took his time and he's a perfectionist. And when
(08:32):
he sent it back to me, I thought, man, maybe
all the call Tanna, So you know, I called her
and win on a Sammy Hagar and Delbert McClinton and
my Christian buddy, Zach Williams and Little Anthony from Little
Anthony and the Imperials and Sam Moore, the late Great
Sam Moore from Sam and Dave and anyway, it turned
(08:55):
into good record with eleven duets on it, if I
may brag it when it came out at debut at
number one on the Blues Album chart, so that made
me feel good.
Speaker 1 (09:07):
Wow, well you should.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
I'm cutting a gospel album for the Gaither Company, so
I'm trying to stay busy. You know, I got a
band and a bus and all that He'll billy stuff.
So we go out and do showed. We're doing the
opera tomorrow night, and then we leave. After the opera
tomorrow night, we're going to Ohio. Then we're heading to
the casino and golf resort. I won't be playing any golf,

but well.

What would you say, like when you're out on the
road and you know you're you're trying to fill some time,
what's like your go to thing to do? What's like
do you tend to do more physical activities? Do you
go out and walk I mean? Or is it more
introspective kind of quiet time?
Speaker 2 (09:51):
Oh? I don't get out in exercise. A whole lot
I do at the house. But I might be watching
the Western Channel, be watching Bonanza or something like that,
or I might be watching Perry Mason saw some murder cases.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
So it just ends we watch grit TV all the time.
We love us in Western here and there.
Speaker 2 (10:13):
Oh I do too. I do too. Gun smoke Bananza,
the Rifleman, have Gun. We'll travel love that love.
