Dana Reacts to Hillsborough Dress Code Reversal

The Hillsborough County school Board voted five to one to
reverse restrictions on leggings and spand X after pushback from
parents and students. The reverse policy required leggings or spand
X to be covered by clothing, extending to at least
middy now. Incoming Wharton High School sophomore Jessic Eagle told
the board that leggings are practical clothing and shouldn't be sexualized.

This is something that's been happening for generations and generations
where girls' bodies are up for debate, and I want
to end that cycle and if I can be a
part of that, then that means a lot to me.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
And a father of two daughters who attended Hillsborough County
schools created an online petition opposing the restrictions that collected
more than thirty one hundred signatures. So all this pressure
led to that reversal from the school board. Nadana, we
had talked about this when it was announced that they
were going to put these restrictions in place, that I
know you talked about it with read when I was

out about the potential for this reversal. Now that it's happened, what.

Speaker 4 (01:09):
Do you think, Well, this isn't a hill that I'm
going to die on. But I do hope that the
attention that's been drawn to the issue will make girls
and their parents think a little bit more about what
they're walking out of the house wearing. And I don't
necessarily think that you need to have something that comes
down to mid thigh, But it's the girls that are
walking around wearing a little crop top and showing their

tummy off and all that that I have a problem with.
We have to dress appropriately for school. You're not going
to the mall. You're not hanging out at home, you're
not going to Walmart. You're a last you're going to learn,
You're going to school, and they should be dressed appropriately,
because then where does it end if we allow that
And the spandex little bike shorts and everything too. Some

of those are really short and just totally inappropriate. They
look more like beachwear.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
Right. And the point that I made yesterday when we
talked about this was, first of all, again, like you said,
they're going to school, Okay, They're not going out to
hang out with friends and those spandex and leggings, they
could be very revealing.

Speaker 4 (02:11):
Yes, they can be very revealing. And this whole idea
about oh, we're sexualizing girls' bodies, well, that's not how
that's not how it is. Like, if you're out there
showing off your body like that, then you're drawing the
attention to yourself.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Right right. Some of these it seems like they're they're
putting on a show there.

Speaker 4 (02:28):
Yes, they absolutely are, and why are we acting like
they're not. That's what kisses me off is that they're
trying to act like, oh, your adults are sexualizing us.
When you're sixteen years old and you're dressing like that,
you in a crop top and a pair of leggings,
you know what you're doing.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
I'm happy for the boys, though, well, I mean good
for them, Good for them.

Speaker 4 (02:45):
I asked my sonbody thinks about this? And he just
doesn't care. So I don't know if he's just not
really looking at girls like that and telling me, yeah,
you don't want to tell me yeah.
