Speaker 2 (00:11):
Greg.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
Thanks so much for taking a few minutes to come
on with us this morning, and I want to start
with the Dolphins firing head coach Mike McDaniel. Timing seems interesting.
Happened shortly after John Harbaugh fired as head coach at
the Baltimore Ravens. He's the hottest coaching commodity that I
can remember in recent years. What do you make of
(00:34):
the Dolphins' ultimate decision to move on from Mike McDaniel
after having moved on from the GM earlier in the season.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
Yeah, I kind of wondered the same thing you did, Ryan,
just on the timing of it.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
When harburgers fired.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
I think the first people a lot of thought first team,
A lot of people.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Thought was Miami.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
Stephen Ross is in Michigan the I obviously the horrorballs
have been a big at Michigan, So I wondered the
same thing. You know, Mike mccannon, It looked like had
survived that initial purge of so many coaches getting fired
just because they had a good finish obviously beat the
Bucks late in the year one four in a row,
one point, you know, to finish eight to nine where
they were in the middle of the season, and the
(01:13):
GM gets fired. It looked like he had maybe saved himself,
but clearly not. And it'll be interesting to see where
Mike McDaniel goes now as what will probably be the
most coveted offensive coordinator candidate out there.
Speaker 1 (01:26):
Absolutely, and I want to get to the Bucks in
a moment, But Mike McDaniel to a team like that, boy,
that's something the Bucks would need, Mike McDaniel running the offense.
But before we get to that, the Miami job, how
is it viewed in NFL coaching circles, Because looks it's Miami,
(01:50):
no state income tax. You know, you got all those
things that I think are in the pros column. But
then you've got a quarterback situation that very uncertain. You've
got a team that has underperformed. It feels like for
a few seasons you don't know who the GM is
going to be. What's the view of that gig?
Speaker 3 (02:12):
Yeah, I guess it's to be determined, you know, I
think the GM aspect of it. I mean there's some
coaches who might you know, you think about someone like Harball,
Supposedly it might be wanting to bring.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
His own GM with him.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
You know, if it's not a big candidate like that,
it might be that they do the traditional route and
hire a GM and have that GM.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
Be part of the coaching search. You know.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
The problem with Miami, you know they benched to a
tang of Iloa late in the year. So you have
a two hundred million dollar quarterback contract that goes on
the books, but you don't have the quarterback really to
go with it necessarily. So you have a couple of
these teams that have openings right now that have these
albatrosses of quarterback contracts. Where again, you go to Arizona,
(02:52):
you have a Kyler Murray contract and part of the
first challenge of that job is figuring out how to
get out from under it or how to lessen the
burden of what's left on the book. Cleveland has an opening.
They have Deshaun Watson in the same boat. So you
have three of these openings that are mitigated by a
huge amount of money tied up in a quarterback.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
You don't necessarily want to play.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
You know, Miami obviously came together well at points during
the year, so I don't think it's an unattractive job overall.
There's not a ton of young pieces. You say, oh,
we can definitely build around that. But I think when
you have a team that doesn't have a quarterback in
place that you're locked into, I don't think anyone would
expect a new coach with the Elephants to make it work.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
With Tua.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
There is a freedom and a flexibility that comes with
being able to identify and bring in your own quarterback
as well.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
We're joined by Five Sports NFL reporter Greg Aman. Let's
switch to the Bucks. Now they fire almost everyone except
the head coach. I just found to be really interesting.
It's the fifth it's going to be the fifth offensive
coordinator in five years under head coach Todd Bowles. What
did you make of the organization's decision to keep him
(04:03):
but then.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Let him get rid of everybody else.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Yeah, Bucks fans aren't necessarily thrilled with this now in
that you know, I think a lot of them wanted
toudd Bulls out in the first place, and then you know,
I think people expected there would be a lot of change.
The Bucks kind of had some leverage where it's like, Okay, well,
if Bulls is going to come back, this has to happen.
This has to happen, and so man, they fired offensive
coordinator Josh Gizzard. That's a tough call, but obviously the
(04:28):
production wasn't there on that side. I think what's most
I guess troubling for some Bucks fans is the idea
that they're not going to make Todd Bowles hire a
defensive coordinator. They're not going to make him give up
the defensive play calling, and a lot of people wondered
if that was kind of too much on his plate.
The defense obviously was a big part of what was
wrong with this team in that second half collapse. So
(04:50):
there's definitely some concern right now that it's just going
to be more the same. I think they have an opportunity.
You know, you think you talked about five offensive coordators
in five years. Some of those have gone very well.
Obviously two of those left because they became head coaches.
They're in the playoffs this weekend. I'll be going and
covering their games. But the unfortunate part of it is
that it leaves you scrambling to give Baker Mayfield a
(05:11):
new coordinator, you know what will be the I guess
the fourth and four years for him. So no, they
have a chance to make this a big higher You know,
with a defensive head coach, an offensive coordinator can have
some autonomy, can be like a one B almost You
just don't know how well they'll be able to get
a top If you can get a Mike McDaniel, if
(05:31):
you can get some of the best offensive minds out
there and convince them to come to Tampa, that's great,
But they haven't always been able to do that. I mean,
Dave Canalis, as well as it worked out, was probably
the sixth or seventh coordinator chosen that year. So definitely
have to see what they can do to fill these
spots and make the people around Todd Bowles better and
smarter and able to do what he wants in a
(05:52):
way that the staff that Bowles had chosen last year
really wasn't able to.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
Yeah, and last thing to bring it all together for
a quick second, you know, if the Bucks could get
Mike McDaniel, I think that would be an ideal situation.
But if you're Mike McDaniel, do you want to go
to a team where there's so much uncertainty with the
head coach moving forward.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
Yeah, I think this team will still be attractive to OC's.
Speaker 3 (06:14):
I mean, you still have Baker Mayfield, you still have
a wealth of offensive talent in terms of you don't know
if Mike Evans is bag, but Chris Godwin, Mega Booka
and Jalen McMillan and Bucky are being in all these things.
Tristan Wurf's, I think there's a lot of default talent
to work with on offense. It didn't necessarily come together
the way they wanted last year, and I think injuries
were part of that. But no, I think I don't
(06:35):
know that it'll be Mike McDaniel. He might be in
Washington with people he's worked with and knows a little better.
But I do think will to get whether it's another
I mean, tud Bowles has gone young first time play
caller three times in a row, and obviously that gamble
kind of worked against him a little bit this third
time here, I think I'll have a chance to get
a more experienced if it's a Todd Monkin from Baltimore,
(06:56):
to bring in someone who's done this before and has
some more experience.
