Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's get to today's top stories, brought to you by
my friends over at the Holland Group Retirement wealth Advisors.
You worked hard to say for your future, they can
help you make the most of it. Find them online
at Askdthethhollands dot com. Good morning, Chris, Good morning. Even
gardening can be deadly. In Florida, a man was shot
and killed while working in his yard this week. The
(00:20):
Okeella Police Department received a call about a suspicious person.
The caller told police he was pulling out of his driveway.
He was approached by a man wearing all black and
motioned for him to stop, but he kept going and
says that he observed the man and appear to wreck
the slide of what looked like a pistol. So shortly after,
officers were dispatched to that area. Another nine one one
(00:42):
call was received regarding a shooting a block east of
where the initial call came in. The sixty four year
old victim in the front yard of his home with
his wife gardening when he was shot. The police chief
said he wasn't doing anything but gardening. Police Chief Mike
Alkins said in thirty two years he's never seen anything
(01:02):
like it, and after finding the guy who matched the description,
twenty nine year old John Toy, was arrested and taken
into custody with two counts of aggravated assault.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
And one count of homicide.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Just one of those nerving stories. Investigators, they say, this
is just a random act of violence, not some kind
of targeted attack. You just had some lunatic, some violent lunatic,
walking down this block and unfortunately, this guy and his
wife happened to be outside gardening and he shot and
(01:37):
killed the guy.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
It's insane. There's what's going on with this guy that
he did it.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
They don't know is he talking? I mean, I just
don't don't understand.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Yeah, And just to think of how that day unfolded
for that poor couple. You know, they get up and
they go out and try to do a little landscape,
a little gardening, and then he her husband winds up.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Dead for no.
Speaker 4 (02:00):
The thing that's scary about it is not only was
the person doing nothing with gardening, but there was somebody
who spotted the suspicious character and called nine one one,
and somebody still got hurt.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Yep, exactly right, that's right.
Speaker 4 (02:13):
So the Miami Dade Tax Collector's Office is continuing its
crackdown on fraudulent disabled parking permits. Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez
says his office was working with the Florida Department of
Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to audit every disabled permit
and temporary disabled parking permit application filed within the last
two years. Good so, according to the tax collector, Fernandez says,
(02:38):
there's been widespread abuse. This harms seniors, veterans, and residents
who have legitimate mobility issues, and the department would be
working to identify violators and possibly prosecute them. And so
he's already sending out letters to anyone who fraudulently obtained
or improperly issued a disabled permit and now it's being
revoked and in some cases could get a fine of
(03:01):
one thousand dollars or up to a year in jail.
And in some cases, these audits are being forwarded to
prosecutors to see if people should be taken to court.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
They should add on top of that punishment that moving forward,
you have to park in the farthest spots in the
parking lot.
Speaker 5 (03:18):
Yeah, I mean, how freaking lazy are you to go
through that much effort to take spaces away from people
who actually know that because you can't walk freaking ten
more steps right, get into a store.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
And it happens a lot. Mount Dora. We did this
story below weeks ago.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
I think it was a late last year where they
took a look at it. It was in eighty vehicles
and with park with those handicapped parking permits, and thirty
of them were fraudulent.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
Yeah, it was a huge percentage in insane number.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Every single city in the state should be doing this
kind of an audit. I have a cousin who has
mobility issues, and the stories that I've heard from my
aunt and uncle about what they've seen, you know, people
taking advantage of this when they need that spot. My
aunt's gotten so pissed off about it that now when
(04:06):
I mentioned this last time we talked about this story,
she takes her lipstick out and she writes on the
vehicle and lets them know her displeasure. And that's not
easy to get off that lipstick drawn on the vehicle.
Speaker 5 (04:22):
Anyone who has their vehicle vandalized.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
That's true, Yeah, that's true, but it's frustrating, especially for
people who really need those spots. And there's no question
there's a lot of fraud.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
Here that needs to be addressed.
Speaker 4 (04:36):
You know, it seemed like it was just a few
months ago when the hopeful fans of Bucks and Dolphins
looking forward to a great and exciting season.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
And here we are and a week one.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
It's always great, isn't it. It's always hopeful and exciting.
Speaker 4 (04:52):
Here we are now in the terrible aftermath the mind
me Dolphins moving on from Mike McDaniel. They fired him
on Thursday. The team finished the season with a seven
and ten record. You know, he was one of the
most hopeful hires back in twenty twenty two. He seemed
like he was a hot commodity and the Dolphins had
a bright future.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
Yeah, like one of those hot shot young offensive lines
who's going to innovate the game.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
Yeah, that's exactly right.
Speaker 4 (05:17):
Now he's gone after a meeting with the team owners,
he and Ross And in Tampa, the Buccaneers are sort
of doing it halfway. They're keeping head coach Todd Bowles
despite the collapse in the second half of the season.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
You know, the Bucks started five and one.
Speaker 4 (05:35):
Yeah, it seems like a long time ago now, and
then of course they had the disastrous second half and
didn't make the playoffs. But Bowles came out and said
he's getting rid of most of his coaching staff. Yeah,
so that'll fix things for the next year.
Speaker 1 (05:47):
So the head coach remains like the whole staff is gone,
so mean, let's go of just about everyone. Yet he
was in charge of the side of the ball that
honestly was the biggest problem at times this season, and
that part's not changing the defentinue to run the defense.
Mike McDaniel, I do think he is a bright offensive mind.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
I just don't.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
Think he is the type who can maybe run a
team like he didn't lose the locker room. They played
well down the stretch, but there were a lot of
discipline issues.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
And things like that over the years. Leaders leadership qualities.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
Yeah, And and for Bowles, I don't think he's a
great well, he certainly not a great offensive mind. I
think now some of his defensive chops are being called
into question, but the offensive coordinators as he a yeah,
and he really needs a good one because it's not
much that he can do with that side of the ball.
In a perfect role for the box, it would be
(06:45):
Mike McDaniel would take over as offensive coordinator moving forward.
Speaker 4 (06:48):
We talked about Bulls and there's no question, you know
he's a good football mind, but you question his energy level.
There are times when he just seems very low energy,
and you wonder always yeah, and you just want wonder
if that's enough to fire up the team or fans. Yeah,
when it comes to the Buccaneers future, can.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
You imagine if Trump watched one of his press conferences
Todd Bowles talking about on them low energy. And then
for the Dolphins, I mean, they're obviously hoping they can
get John Harbaugh's that's the goal right now. There are
some other good coaching candidates out there, but he is
what is it the bell of the ball?
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Is that? Is that the saying? I guess so, yeah,
hopefully I used.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
That right, but asking data. That's John our boss. Wow,
Well that was a shot. Chris Dragman with today's Top Stories. Chris,
thanks so much. Turned to Natalie ron Regaz for today's
top Stories. Good morning, Natalie, Good morning, and happy Friday.
Speaker 6 (07:41):
Well, if South Florida man may be sentenced to death
this after he kidnapped a five year old girl and
left her to be eaten by alligators, yeah, it gets worse.
Seventy six year old Harold Brady had already been convicted
in the nineteen ninety eight death of Quanti Shot may Cock.
He was sentenced to death in two thousand and seven.
(08:02):
The verdict was reversed ten years later. Court records are
showing that Brady befriended Quantisha's mom, who testified that Brady
showed up at her house and he lost it when
she asked him to leave well. The prosecution goes on
to say that Brady then drove the mom to a
remote sugarcane field. He choked her to the point where
(08:22):
she was left unconscious and left to die, but she
woke up and she managed to flag down help. In
the meantime, Brady drove little Cue to the alligator alley
and then dropped her in the water, and authorities found
her little body two days later. Her left arm was
missing and her skull was crushed. Jury's selection has begun
for resentencing trial. Brady has already been sentenced to multiple
(08:46):
life terms and additional prison time for related charges.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
Yeah medical examiner testify the girl was alive when the
alligators attacked her, biting her head, oh my god, stomach
and this is one of those cases where you really
wish the punished more perfectly fit the crime. Like I
don't want a lethal injection here, I want him dropped
off in the middle of Alligator Alley so you can
experience what that little girl did.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
Yeah, I mean yeah, this is evil as evil as
a guest.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
Absolutely, all right, what else is going on this morning, Natalie?
Speaker 6 (09:15):
Well, people usually have to pay for a Juicy Booty
these days, but in this case, the woman who goes
by that name is crying.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
Foul mindy.
Speaker 6 (09:23):
Police arresting thirty eight year old Danishia Octavia Woods, who
is known online as Juicy Booty, this after victims identified
her through a fight video. They accuse her of beating
people up with a metal baseball bat during a large
street fight near a local park called Crestwood Park. Charges,
(09:45):
of course, that she denies. Multiple kids adults they were
all involved in this street fight, which had stemmed from
an earlier school brawl. The arrest reports shows that one
victim told officers that Woods or Juicy Booty, and her
sister went to the park after being challenged, only to
be attacked by approximately twenty to thirty other women.
Speaker 3 (10:06):
Yeah, a couple of things to unpack.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
I'm surprised that she needed a bat because it sounds
like she had quite the weapon already on.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
But here's the thing.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
You know, every now and then we see these kinds
of incidents occur, and it's like, if you're gonna challenge somebody, right,
what are you bringing like thirty.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
Other people with you? I just always find that. Yeah,
like then.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
If you're gonna challenge somebody, yeah exactly, but you got
you got adults involved in this whole thing. I was
talking to a close friend of mine the other day
and his kids, they play sports, and he said, you
wouldn't believe the craft that goes on at these sporting events.
Speaker 3 (10:55):
Oh it's insane, Like he was.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
Telling me multiple times, near fights, breakouts, and it's a parent.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
Yeah, it's a parent, it's a parent it.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
Yeah, I've seen it.
Speaker 5 (11:06):
My son plays baseball and there have been Yeah, I've
been I've been ready to get my camera out and
start filming a future.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (11:12):
I thought you were gonna say throws to start throwing fists.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
No, I'm not a fighter at all.
Speaker 5 (11:17):
I'm a whim.
Speaker 1 (11:18):
Dana's content first, content first, doing it for the grand
All right.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
Let's get to the big story this morning.
Speaker 6 (11:28):
Number ten Miami going to the College Football Playoff National
Championship Game. The Miami Hurricanes are playing for the title.
They came from behind beating number six almost thirty one
twenty seven in the semis at the Fiesta Bowl last
night in Carson beck Hack of the job scored that
game winning touchdown in the final seconds. He was scrambling
for a three yard run and turns out. Head coach
(11:50):
Mario Christobal says they were battling major adversity from the
get go for.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Sick had issues, and all they kept talking about was
a gonna find a way.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
We're gonna find a way.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
So look, we're focused on of course we joined this one,
but we gotta get focus on one to know one
more time. Yeah, the flu has been going around. We
talked about it.
Speaker 6 (12:09):
If Florida is leading the way, not that I necessarily
condone Mario Christobal saying, hey, we worked through the flu.
That means that my boss is gonna probably expect me
to come in and.
Speaker 1 (12:20):
Yeah, the Hurricanes can do it. It was such a
good game and such a great ending.
Speaker 6 (12:27):
Touch days from now, ten days from now, the.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
Final Yeah at hard Rock Stadium, at hard Rock Stadium.
Speaker 3 (12:32):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
They got home field advantage for the championship game, which
is awesome. And I said yesterday I felt good about
the Hurricanes. I thought their defense was going to play
a big role in this game. They did set the
tone early. They held ole Miss to minus one yard
in the first quarter. Now, eventually ole Miss got things rolling.
But Carson beck Uh, I thought he was the big
(12:55):
question mark. If he had a really solid game, I
thought it would be a good outcome for the Hurricanes.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
And he did.
Speaker 1 (13:01):
He played really steady down the stretch and there was
a play at the very end of the game, a
hail Mary that rebels QB, turning Dad Shambliss through. There
were some controversies to whether or not it was past interference.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
Look, the bottom line is that ball wasn't catchable.
Speaker 1 (13:17):
He was not going to catch it inbounds, so even
if there was some contact that didn't matter.
Speaker 3 (13:22):
This was a big win for Miami.
Speaker 1 (13:24):
There were some questions about whether or not they belonged
in the college football playoffs.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
I always thought Miami should be in.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
I thought it was Tulane and James Madison, those group
of five schools that shouldn't be in.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
I was right about that. They got blown out in
the first round.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
Miami belonged and clearly they're proven that now in the
championship game, I think they'll be playing Indiana, but we'll
know for sure. Yeah, we'll know for sure. Tonight, Indiana
gonna play o Organ. But I think Indiana is gonna
win that game. Natalie Rodriguez with today's top stories. Natalie,
thanks so much.
