on the show. We really appreciate it. And before we

get to the policy changes that we've learned ICE is instituting,
I want to start with what we know about these
incidents that have led to those changes. And let's start
with the first one, the deadly shooting that happened in Houston.
What do we know and what don't we know.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
We do know that ICE was informed that this was
a vehicle that they had been watching, the state police
had been watching believe to be carrying somebody they wanted,
and so when they went after that vehicle, that was
why they were going after it.
Speaker 4 (01:07):
It's never just a random vehicles on the street.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
And when they opened fire, one officer opened fire when
that vehicle failed to pull over, is being followed by
two unmarked black SUVs that were government vehicles. They did
shoot him through the window and kill the one of
the men there at the driver. Three other people were
in the vehicle and said that he was not He
(01:33):
was not, you know, attempting to hurt police.
Speaker 4 (01:36):
He was just trying to get away.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
And so so there's the first first one.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
On that one in Houston. The individual who was killed
was not the person who I guess they were looking for, correct.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
He was not the individual, no, and so he was
an illegal immigrant, but he was not the person that
they were looking for. And so it's one of these
things where I've gone out with ICE plenty of times before,
where they spend days, if not weeks, following individuals and
unmarked cars, getting to know their schedule because they want
(02:17):
to make a safe apprehension. They know they can't go
into a home, and so they want to do that
when you're walking to your car or walking out of
your car going into your job, and so it always
looks random, but they know where they're trying to apprehend them.
So it's a little different to see them chasing vehicles
like this and definitely opens up more risk because they're
(02:40):
you know, they can't be for sure until they actually
get someone's documents out.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
All Right, what happened in Maine, the more recent deadly shooting.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
So in Maine, they were going after a man I
believe from Columbia, and they were able to to a
similar incident, and you know, I think both speak to
a similar traffic traffic incident, and so another shooting where
(03:11):
he was killed.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
And in Main we're seeing a.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
Huge fallout as far as the public response, people marching
in the streets, streets the day it happened, and so
bringing more attention. And over overnight we've seen a third
incident where somebody in Florida was killed, not not by
a shooting, but trying to get away from I believe
(03:35):
in the Saint Augstine area, away from Ice deering a
traffic stop.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
Right, so Ice apparently was in pursuit of this person's
person ran and then ran into a road and got
hit by a truck. So a little bit different, but
another deadly incident involving ice. Were joined by Anna Tira,
Telly Washington Examiner reporter who covers all of this as

closely as anyone. The policy changes that have gone into effect,
one involving vehicle stops and one evolving body cameras. Tell
us about that.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Yeah, you know, they're they're supposed to be wearing body cameras,
but DHS has blamed the lack of congressional funding because
of the government shut down on why ICE officers are
not wearing body cameras.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
DHS has had said they want to wear body cameras.
The Trump administration supports it.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
But clearly and you know, special I'm sorry, specifically in
the Houston incident, they were not wearing body cameras and
so it's really a he said, she said, type of incident.
You know, back to the to the what they're allowed
to do. ICE was internally directed as of yesterday morning
to stop making these traffic stops, and overnight President Trump
(04:55):
got involved and said, absolutely not, We're going to continue
making these traffic stops. ICE officers know how to do
their job, and they do it well. So now we're
waiting to see, you know, if ICE is actually going
to continue doing or it's doing or if it's actually
you're not going to follow what Trump is directing it
(05:15):
to do.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
I find that hard to imagine, but we'll see how
it plays out. Let me ask you, I want to
go back to the main incident for a second, because
there is this video security camera footage. It's very grainy,
but you see this vehicle kind of circling an intersection
and then you see the what appear to be federal
law enforcement agents of some sort. They go up to
(05:40):
the vehicle. Can't really tell when in the timeline this happened.
If you learned anything about that video and how it
fits into that incident, No, we haven't yet.
Speaker 4 (05:51):
And that's why these situations are so fluid, because we
don't know.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
You know, it's when you're not involved in person, and
it's so difficult. I spoke with Tom Holman on the
phone yesterday and he was saying that he was still
waiting on information about what happened in Maine, and so
even you know, people at the top of the administration
are trying to get the facts behind all of this
and figure out what's going on for sure.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
Yeah, and that's what we said this morning. I just
don't feel like you can draw in a kind of
hard conclusion at the moment based on what we know,
because there's so much that we still don't know. I
also made the point that you know, based on how
the Department of Homeland Security and ICE is handled past incidents.
And don't feel like I can just give them the
benefit of the doubts in terms of their version of events.
(06:42):
But you know, they might be telling the truth. I
don't know. I need to see more information.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
They're dragging their feet putting out statements, and I think
that is to their detriment. You know, we know basic
information that can be put out there. Someone was killed
during an encounter with ICE today in such and such
city that you know, those are things that should be
getting out at least pretty quickly to confirm at least.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
Otherwise you're leaving it to state officials.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
You're leaving it to you know, John Smith and Jane
Doe on Twitter to tell us what's going on and
people will believe that. So yeah, and reporters, we want
to know the truth. You know, we're not out there
to make things up. We want the government to tell
us this. We want to hear on the ground and
let people make their own decisions based on the facts
that you've confirmed and can put out there.
