Trump Ramps Up Strikes On Iran

Ryan talks with ABC News Correspondent Jordana Miller about President Donald Trump ordering a fourth straight day of strikes on Iran. They discuss the latest attacks around the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's strikes on U.S. bases, and the unusual shift to daytime military operations.

Let's bring in ABC News correspond correspondent Jordana Miller coming
to us live from Israel this morning. So, Jordana, the
naval blockade on Iran back in effect. US military has
been pounding Iran with airstrikes. What's the response been like
from Iran to these new developments.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Well, Ran, we do have some breaking news, which is
that Senkam just announced at six am Eastern that they
have now begun another round of strikes in Iran, following
a night of strikes on Iran. And first of all,
this is the first time that we've seen America strike

(00:47):
Iran in daylight hours really since Operation Atic Furies first
forty days. And we're seeing reports of explosions in Shiraz,
which is a city in the south the south center
of Iran that is considerably inland from just the targets

(01:07):
around the coastline of Iran and the Strait of Hormux.
So it may be that the strikes we're going to
see today are going to hit further inland across Iran.
We saw strikes last night hitting in and around the Strait,
and then we saw Iran overnight fire on again the

(01:31):
US based Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, also the bases US
bases in Kuwait, as well as against the US base
in Jordan, the two Gulf countries, and Jordan's saying that
they send it off ballistic missile and drone strikes. But
Bahrain and Kuwait some images coming out showing direct hits.

(01:56):
We're still waiting to see what the BP is, that
is the battle damage estimate, We don't have it yet.
And Iran has put out some satellite images claiming to
have inflicted damage on those US basis. We have to
caution that at this point it's hard for US to

(02:16):
corroborate any of those satellite images, Ryan, because as you know,
the US government is asking media organizations and the actual
satellite image companies themselves not to put out images that
might help the Iranians, and the Iranians often put out
fake news, so we're gonna take those pictures with a

(02:39):
grain of salt. But nonetheless, this was an intense night
of back and forth fighting and now a new round underway.

Speaker 4 (02:50):
Yeah, it certainly seems like the war is back on
heating up. Yeah, Between the naval blockade and these airstrikes.
President he backtracked on his idea of charging a twenty
percent toll on ships passing through the strait. He said

(03:10):
that Gulf states would instead make big trade and investment
deals with the US. Have you heard anything about that.
It feels to me like there's going to be one
of those situations where, you know, some of the Golf
states they make some promises and like they have in
the past, and you know, who knows if that ever
comes true, they'll put out some numbers and some figures,

(03:31):
and that'll be that. A lot of times that stuff
doesn't actually end up coming to fruition.

Speaker 3 (03:38):
I think that's true. Sometimes they don't come to fruition.
And I think we talked about it yesterday, ran together
that you know, there was always a chance the President
was going to try to come down from this tree. Yeah,
of twenty percent you know tax on cargo, it's a lot,
it's expensive, would drive up shipping and nobody really, you know,

(04:01):
was voicing much support for it. In this way, the
President could climb down from that tree and say, we're
still going to get investments from other countries. Again, We'll
see what those investments look like. But the important thing
I think is that that number and that plan is
off the table. It wasn't very tenable. And sometimes the president,

(04:22):
you know, talks a big game and then he'll reverse course.
And he did that, and I think, you know, many
of us that follow the president were not surprised. And now, yeah,
not at all. And now you know the now the
question is, you know, what what are we in for
in the weeks ahead. It's clear the President doesn't want

(04:44):
to give up. He does not want to see control
of the straightform moves to Iran. That seems clear. If
he would have been willing perhaps to carve out a
compromise with Tehran where the United States would control the
southern lanes, Iran would control the northern lanes. But the
Iranians won't have that. Perhaps they'll look back and you know,

(05:08):
maybe you know, historians and others will say that was
a mistake. Maybe Iran is overplaying their hands and wanting
to control every lane of the straight offore moves. We'll
have to wait and see. But right now the war
seems focused on the over control of the straight and
you know, and and maybe, uh, you know, we're gonna

(05:31):
maybe the Iranians will back away and come back to
the negotiating table in the days or weeks ahead. But
the President is threatening to hit you know, picksas mountain, right,
That's what he threatened yesterday. That's the one of the
secret news forget about that. Well, that's significant because number one,

(05:54):
it wasn't widely known that the Iranians had this new
underground site foreign merching uranium near Natans deep deep underground.
You know, it hasn't been you know, we can we
can make educated guesses that the Iranians, uh, you know,

(06:17):
thought nobody knew about this site until perhaps the Israelis
you know, found out about it and alerted the rest
of the intelligence community about this site, or perhaps the
West knew about it and decided to go public during
the war about it. But this is a dangerous underground

(06:38):
site where the Iranians can hide uranium and centrifuges. So
you know, the President was threatening to hit that. The
other you know, the other question or that's out there
as will the United States decided to hit some energy
or infrastructure sites scare the Iranians back to the back

(06:58):
to the table maybe, and they ran out to see
what unfolds.

Yeah, I think the President's talk and maybe that would
be the case next week. He was talking about those
kinds of infrastructure hits if things don't change, all right.
