Speaker 1 (00:01):
The clock.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
What time it be high news, I'm keep famous. The
day is half over. Now it's time to enter the
fletch Zoneah, let's get it going on up Friday. What's
going on, everybody? Ben Fletcher, Sammy Long wit you till
two o'clock to day. John Schaeffer is gonna take over
(00:24):
then as Shapey makes his way out to New Mexico.
Big game at the pit tomorrow night for the San
Diego State Aztecs. We'll get into it in just a
little bit, but you heard it in Sammy's update. Bids
have hit the table. I don't know if anyone remembers,
but yesterday around one thirty, we asked Kevin Acey had
bids hit the table, and he kind of went up
an octave and then didn't tell us whether they had
or hadn't. They had, and Kevin released an article what
(00:46):
forty five minutes after that that stated that bids have
hit the table for the San Diego Padres. So fascinating
that we get a new name that is also entered
the group. Chat in Drew Brees along with the owner
of Viori, which is a San Diego company up in
Carl's Bad. He also went to USD. So we're starting
to get some local flare in it, and it sounds
like what the most recent report is, they don't want
(01:07):
to make a bid on their own. They just want
to back somebody making a bid.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
It came out yesterday that they were their own bid.
But kind of looking at it, Yory is a very
successful company, but that's not that's not that's not ownership money, right,
that's not buy a baseball team rich. So apparently they're
looking for the owner of Yori, as well as Drew
Brees to maybe attached with someone to to go along
with a bid.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
Here's what I'll say about Drew Brees. I've seen him
in person three times in my life. Once was at
a radio row twice was that Padres games like the
dude is a Padres fan, and I think would be
a great addition to whoever ends up buying the club.
I do wonder if they end up going with, Hey,
whoever the highest bidder is, we'll chip in a couple
of mill of our money and we want to be
a part of this, and Drew Brees will be a
great face to attach to it. I really think that's true.
(01:52):
I don't no one knows what the numbers are, yet
the league sources are saying it's going to be around
three billion dollars that the Padres are going to sell for,
which is much more than two point five billion dollars
we were first told about. So this is a little
bidding war going on for the Padres, and I guess
good for the Sidler family who bought it for some
part of eight hundred million dollars and they're gonna flip
it around here in just a few years for close
(02:12):
to three billion dollars, which is crazy and would be
a record sale for Major League Baseball. And I do
think the Sidler family has all of you to think
for that, and has the fans who have filled up
Petco Park over the last few seasons to thank for that.
And it has been one of the most supported ball
clubs in the entire country, and that's why it's gonna
fetch that price. Now, as Padres fans, we you just
kind of have to sit there and hope that whoever
(02:33):
ends up with the highest number on that piece of
paper ends up having the right interest of the Padres
ball club at heart, and we'll see if that's gonna happen.
I thought it was interesting when we were talking to
Kevin yesterday, how that's kind of the root he went down. Also,
it's like, yeah, there are some guys with some deep
pockets who are making bids for this Padres team, But
what are they gonna do with those deep pockets once
they take the team over? And the Sidlers can say
(02:54):
whatever they want about how we want to make sure
that Peter's legacy is honored with the next ownership group
of the team. But ultimately it is gonna be whatever
the biggest number on that piece of paper is, because
that's what a bidding war.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Is, right, And at the end of the day, John Seiler,
I think ideally, if everything's perfect, he would love to
sell it to someone who cares about the team. But
to that end, if they're someone's making an offer that's
fifty million more or one hundred million more, they're gonna
go with just the best offer.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Yeah, it's a difference between three point zero and three
point two. They're taking three point two, they're.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
Taking three point two. It's interesting. It's it started obviously
with Kevin Acy on our show yesterday kind of hinting
at this, the fact that there are five bids this
thing is obviously moving fast. The John Siler comments were
interesting about how he did kind of want to sell
it to someone who had value in the city. I've
seen a lot on social media back and forth of
(03:46):
some people love the San Diego Ties, the Dan Freakin,
the Drew Brees, and some people are kind of have
the other way of who cares, who cares what they're
from San Diego. That doesn't necessarily mean that they want
to spend money. Drew Brees is interesting. They're kind of
going after the Dodger model. It's interesting the Dodgers, Mark
Waltz and a lot of that group owns the majority
(04:06):
of the Dodgers. Yet who do you hear speak at
Dodger Stadium in Laker games? Here? Magic Johnson? Because people
in Los Angeles go no way, Magic Johnson's talking. People
love it. People don't necessarily want to hear from a
bunch of stuff the owners they don't know anything about.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
Well, that's what the SDFC did with Manny Machana exactly.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
It's it's name credibility. Immediately Machado's at the game, people
are excited a fan of the city. So Drew Brees
is a smart name. To attach if you're Koudlah from
Viori or or a freed kid or Feliciono. If one
of these guys ends up attaching Drew Brees to them,
it's smart because obviously a beloved sports figure here in
(04:43):
San Diego. But it's it's exciting that the team has
so much interest in it. In five bids, he said,
John Siler made it sound like there's other bids that
haven't even become public yet. So I mean this is
you can get a real high price for this team.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
I have a feeling Kevin was probably right yesterday when
he said he want to be surprised if by opening
day there's a new ownership group and we'll see expecting
two rounds of bids. I think that was the latest
report that we got. So first round apparently has happened,
and we'll see if the second round how high this
thing can go and how many people drop off. Because
I do think it's easy right at the beginning to say, oh, yeah,
I'd like to buy in Major League Baseball, teach everyone wants, yeah,
(05:17):
what's the number at two point five? I got that
in the bank, and then once you start to see
numbers flying, and once you start talking to your financial advisors,
things probably change a little bit, So who knows. I
would say in text us if you feel differently, seven
zero four seven zero, start your message with Team Friedkin
is still the top of my list. The more we
learn about everybody on this list, the more Friedkin stands
out to me. But I would love to have Drew
(05:37):
Brees attached to that absolutely. I would love to have
Viori attached to that. Absolutely. So we'll see where this
thing goes man, But quicker, sooner, sure make it by
opening day. I guess we're already down the train tracks,
aren't we. All Right, we're gonna get to the Big three.
Here of our number one, we got a busy show
for you. We got some nine inch Nails tickets to
hand out as the show progresses. We also have a
(05:57):
pair of tickets for you to go see the Nine
Inch Nails at Pachanga Arena, coming up in the first
few weeks of March. So stay tuned here on San
Diego Sports seven sixty. Let's get to the Big Three,
where samuy Long rips through the top stories in the world.
The sports semi smash he.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
Luked Freak is here ready to go back to the
office and knock the socks off your friends.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
I mean co workers big time for about top stories
of the day big to three three. By the way,
now I know I need to go back and check
out the Coaches show that aired last night on San
Diego Sports seven to sixty because one of the texts
that came in was from the six one nine that said,
what will you miss most about the Mountain West? I
really want to hear Brian Dutcher's response to that, because
(06:37):
he's gonna say nothing.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
I heard a little bit. I think I was driving
around and he was kind of talking about what we
were saying the other day about everyone cannibalize each other.
Everyone's everyone's an.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
Officials, terrible travel, bad TV deal.
Speaker 3 (06:54):
Let's be honest, terrible cities. You're going to?
Speaker 2 (06:56):
Oh, I don't know about that. That's not true, Sammy.
Do we want to is beautiful?
Speaker 3 (07:00):
Do we want to go to bois No, I'm take
a hard pass on that. But even they cannibalize each other.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
Talking about Laramie, Wyoming like that, How dare you?
Speaker 3 (07:08):
Well, I'm sorry it's anyone who's from Laramie, Wyoming, But no,
I mean they cannibalize each other. They're not. None of
them are. Outside of the Aztecs potentially Utah State are
extremely highly ranked teams where you're getting a lot of
credit for wins, but there are also a lot of
tough teams to play, so it's easy to gather a
lot of losses without the reward of playing in the
big twelve of the SEC where you get real resume
(07:29):
builders all the time.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
I'll tell you what Albuquerque has depicted in the show
Breaking Bad is a lovely place travel of commerce.
Speaker 3 (07:36):
Travel commerce, especially if you want to buy meth.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Yeah, exactly, that good blue stuff like glass. Yeah, where
are we going, Sammy, We're.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
Gonna start with my Lakers now. Oh they suck now,
I mean, I can't even argue with it. Austin So
last night, if you didn't watch the game, they lost
one hundred and thirteen to one ten. Austin Reeves misses
the game winning three pointer on the rope and Phoenix
the worst part about it. No Devin Booker, no Dylan
Brooks for the Suns, yet still beat up on the Lakers.
(08:06):
Drama though out in La So. Austin Reeves after the
game says, frustrated frustration level is quote very high as
well as yesterday came out. DeAndre Ayden was apparently overheard
by Damian Menhiman a couple of weeks ago screaming in
the locker room. They're trying to make me Clint Cappella.
I'm not no Clinton Cappella. Clint Capella responded after they
(08:26):
lost last night and said, you got two of the
best four generals in the game. My dog lock in,
So Austin Reeves is frustrated. Deandreten's frustrated. The whole team
seems to be frustrated, and they're on a three game
losing streak. A reaction to the status of the Lakers
right now.
Speaker 2 (08:42):
Get Lebron out of the Lakers. It's funny Lebron wasn't
mentioned once and that entire thing you just did, Sammy,
and that's probably fair, but it does feel like everyone's
just waiting for the end of that era. And you
can say all you want, Oh, this is Lucas team now,
and how many points of Luca have last night forty
one forty one points last night in a loss to
a team that didn't have their best players on the court.
I just think that it's obviously time for a mental
(09:04):
readjustment for the Los Angeles Lakers, and they'll be able
to do that. They will, but it's only it's gonna
take Lebron not being there anymore.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
It's frustrated. First off, on the deandred in front, I
don't know where Deandreydon thinks that he has the right
to talk because he is great in college. Exactly in college.
He has been a complete utter disaster for the Los
Angeles Lakers so far this year, career lows, only averaging
sixteen points a game, and that really came off the
first couple months of the season. Deandreydon, there's a reason
(09:33):
why Phoenix didn't won him. There's a reason why Portland.
When Portland's turning you down, something's not working, and the
Lakers kind of just needed a center. He has not
worked out. I'm not killing Austin Reeves. He's had a
couple of bad games here. He missed the wide open
look ost Reeve is gonna make that ten out of
ten times or nine out of ten times. The problem
with the Lakers right now they do not play defense,
(09:55):
and it's hard because Luca doesn't play defense, and Reeves
got cooked on defense last night. But it's also hard
to bash Luca because Lucas scores forty one points. The
team is extremely flawed. They they need the money from Lebron.
They need the sixty million dollars in cash space they're
going to get in the offseason because you have to
round out this roster. This roster is incomplete. They don't
play defense, they don't have a lot of front court depth,
(10:16):
and they don't have consistent scoring off the bench. So
the Lakers can beat a lot of teams because if
the Big three are on, they're working, and if they're not,
it can look pretty dreadful like it did last night.
So frustrating, frustrating loss for the Lake Show. All right.
Number two head in the NFL. George Pickens hit with
the franchise tag today. If you are the Dallas Cowboys
and Jerry Jones, would you sign him to a long
(10:37):
term deal.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
That's a tough stretch for me. I think signing him
to the franchise tag extremely smart because George Pickens is
wildly talented and he looks really good with Dak Prescott,
and George Pickins answered the most important question he could
have going into this year. Can you share the field
with another number one wide receiver, him and CD on
the field at the same time. Actually looked pretty good
for the Cowboys, So I think tagging him one of
the smartest things they can do. Year one looked pretty
(11:01):
good in Pittsburgh two for George Pickens what died? Years
two and three look like with George Dickens and Pittsburgh. Mentally,
things went downhill for him. He started becoming a problem
in the locker room. So he does still have more
to prove and that's for his next contract. So Cowboys
smart to tag him. See how this year goes and
you are now able to cut eight. I actually think
it would have been so Cowboys to sign him to
(11:23):
a long term deal immediately and not franchise tag him,
and I think it's the smartest thing for them to
do not to do that.
Speaker 3 (11:30):
This is a real turning point for Jerry Jones. Wow,
because I gotta get Jerry Jones' credit. Deazy to come
on as sports radio hosts and destroy Jerry Jones. It's
about the easiest about fifteen minutes segment you could do,
Jerry Jones.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
Thank you, Sammy.
Speaker 3 (11:45):
Yes, Jerry Jones showed a lot of growth and moving
on Michael Parsons because over the years, Jerry Jones doesn't
move off stars. That is not something that Dallas Cowboys do.
In fact, that Dallas Cowboys would rather have superstars than
a good team around them, like they would never want
the Seahawks outside of the Super Bowl. The Seahawks don't
have a ton of recognizable names on the team outside
(12:05):
of Darnold and Jasen and Kenneth Walker. That defense doesn't
have a lot of household names on it. The Cowboys
want stars Micah CD Dak Hees. Trade Micah because you
realize the defense wasn't good with him, because you need
to get better in the aggregate. As quote Billy Bean
would say, Now you have another opportunity because George Pickens,
although he's a great receiver, he's kind of a head case.
(12:28):
I mean, we know this over the years is a
reason why Mike Tomlin didn't want to deal with him
on a Pittsburgh Steeler team that badly needed a wide receiver.
And then you're already paying CD Lamb, you're paying Dak Prescott.
I thought you were moving off the stars, off the
long term contracts for stars. I would keep paying CD
and Dak and I looked at trade George Pickens. If
you want to play him on the tag for one year,
(12:49):
I think the Cowboys are actually gonna be pretty good
this year. That's fine, but you could get a real
massive haul for George Pickens. It feels like his value
is at an all time high because he didn't cause
a lot of problems last year. He did put up
big numbers. Why are you going to sign him to
a massive deal where all your money is tied up
in two receivers a la Cincinnati Bengals. And look how
that's worked out for him when Jamar Chase and t
(13:11):
Higgins taken all the money all right now, this third story, yes,
it's the NBA. It's NBA adjacent the Atlanta Hawks. There
is a famous establishment in Atlanta. If you've ever been
to Atlanta, I'm sure it's one of the top five
(13:33):
things to do there.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
Or you were listening to this radio station during the
NBA COVID Bubble talked about this place a lot.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
There's a place called Magic City. Hell yeah, there is
now if you want to look up on Twitter right
now on its safari what that is? El uses some
far what's wrong with Safari. Okay, right here anyway, Okay,
the Atlanta Hawks are honoring a strip club. Yes, this
is real, the most famous strip club in Atlanta, Magic City.
(14:03):
They're having a night this is real where they are
honoring Magic City and inviting I believe t I is
performing at the halftime show that night. I don't know.
I'm assuming maybe some dancers from Atlanta reaction to the
Atlanta Hawks haveing Magic City Night.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
It's about the Wings, Sammy. The Wings are world famous
at Magic City. We all know this, the Lemon Pepper Wings.
That's why Lou Williams literally got suspended from games in
the NBA because he couldn't stand going multiple days without
the Wings.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
Breaking news, James Harden traded to the Atlanta Hawks.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
I've potentially yes, but this is actually so. One of
the owners of the Atlanta Hawks is Jamie Gertz, who's
an actor and a producer in Hollywood, and she's she
would be like the Drew Brees coming to own the Padres.
She's not worth all the money, but she puts a
face on the franchise and she talks a lot for
the team. And she produced a five part docu series
(14:58):
that was on Stars or HBO or one of those
things that was about the strip club Magic City and
how the Wings are literally a part of the culture
in Atlanta and how it's a foundational in the world
of hip hop and rap, and so this whole thing
kind of surrounds around the fact that Jamie Gertz already
had the relationship. They're playing the Orlando Magic by the way,
on the night that this is happening, and t I's
(15:20):
gonna perform, and this is very very cool.
Speaker 3 (15:22):
For I said, T I said, were doing this one
for this city dot dot dot Magic City.
Speaker 2 (15:28):
How much our flights to Atlanta is all I gotta say. Listen,
what is that halftime shout.
Speaker 3 (15:31):
Out to them? They said, they're honoring an institution. Damn right,
honor that institution. They're they're helping out the economy, just
like everyone else.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
Andre's new owner take notes. Can you imagine you got
a few options around San Diego?
Speaker 3 (15:45):
There's there is a few options around San Diego if
you want to pick. Shout out to the Atlanta Hawks.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
This is funny, man, This was very funny when I
woke up this morning and saw this story and we
talked about it for like twenty minutes.
Speaker 3 (15:56):
Notice how Jonathan Kminge gets traded there immediately and then
all of a sudduh.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
But this place has had part of NBA history, like
everyone remembers are in the bubble, right Like people left
the bubble to go get wings from the Strip Club.
Speaker 3 (16:11):
They were lonely too, they need they needed a night away.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
I have to try these chicken wings, Jamar says.
Speaker 3 (16:16):
The wings are unbelievable. Hashtag Magic City.
Speaker 2 (16:18):
I have to try these wings at some point in
my life. There pepper wings are supposed to be to
die for Lemon pepper at that place.
Speaker 3 (16:25):
The clip that has good food shout out to them.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
Apparently a lot of them do. I don't know. I've
never had the privilege. If I'm being honest. It is
San Diego Sports seven sixty. We got some tickets for
you today. We got nine inch Nails tickets coming up
in just a little bit, some Asstax tickets for their
regular season finale at Via Has Arena. A little bit
after that, Steve Hartman will be here for his one
thirty appointment, And man, I have to ask Steve. We're
(16:47):
gonna talk to Steve about some Magic City. Maybe he's
been there maybe he's tried the wings. We'll see.
Speaker 3 (16:51):
What are the odds he's been there? I one hundred
percent he has been there. Like no shot in hell
he has not been there.
Speaker 2 (16:59):
I'd be some prize if he's been Actually.
Speaker 3 (17:02):
Really, yeah, are we taking a side bet on this?
Speaker 2 (17:05):
I got five on it?
Speaker 3 (17:08):
All right?
Speaker 2 (17:08):
Five in San Diego Sports seven sixty. Take a quick
break here. When we come back, we're gonn talking about
texts ahead of their matchup with New Mexico, and then
a recent free agent pitcher who turned down the San
Diego Padres. We've heard why that's coming up at twelve thirty.
Don't go anywhere at San Diego Sports seven sixty. So
that group text went out this morning because we're just
a couple of days away from March now, and so
(17:29):
everyone's got to start thinking about these things. But when
it comes to being a fan of a specific program,
especially one like San Diego State who's been in the
tournament so often over the last few years, it's hard
to imagine a situation where they're not in it, right,
And after that Grand Canyon game, after the Colorado State game,
I think collectively we all started to think, oh my god,
they may not make the NCAA tournament this year, and
(17:52):
the bracketology would probably tell you you're right if you
were thinking that, because according to bracket Matrix, four of
the one hundred and twelve simulated brackets they have did
not have San Diego State in them. But you go
and beat Utah State by seventeen, and you can flip
the whole conversation in your head, Sammy. If you taken
a peek at Joe Lonardi's latest bracketology which came out this.
Speaker 3 (18:12):
Morning, Yes, I saw them. They moved up in it.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
They're right back in the field, right back in it.
Speaker 3 (18:17):
I saw so. I heard a bracketologism forgetting his name
on Oroco something on the John yesterday and he said
their model had SCSU in the tournament. But that's only
because they're the number one seed in the Mountain West
Conference attorney right now and they're projecting that they win
the tournament.
Speaker 2 (18:36):
And there's probably some of that too with Lenardi's thing.
There probably is. However, it is funny that you go
from such doom to such or such doom and gloom
to such happiness just in the span of one day.
And now I think the Aztecs have an opportunity tomorrow
to further cement themselves in that to where maybe it's
not just the forward projection of the Mountain West Tournament,
but maybe it's also the fact that they've earned that spot.
It'll win at New Mexico. I certainly think we'd get
(18:58):
them closer to that. Note, again, we're not saying now
all of a sudden they're for sure in there, for
sure out right they are the truest form of a
bubble team you could possibly have at this exactly well.
Speaker 3 (19:09):
It's a completely fluid situation because when you're projecting a
team is out or in on the bubble, the teams
that you're projecting are in, you're expecting are gonna win out,
or you're expecting are going to have good ends to
the season. I mean, right now, Utah State is what
on a three game losing streat two two. Okay, they're
playing out a hypothetical scenario yesterday. They have a tough
(19:29):
schedule the next week, like what if they kept losing.
So in Utah State right now is a quote lock
for the field. So the Aztecs you can only play
what's in front of you. But yes, a road win
at the pit would be massive because I think you answered.
There's two questions that need to be answered this week.
The first one aren't going to answer against Utah State.
Can you get a massive win over a team currently
(19:52):
in the field at home and you did? You beat
the crap out of them by seventeen The astecs is
serve all the credit in the world for that. And
now if you really want to put people on notice,
because there always is that, well, you can beat them
at home, and that's great. But if you go into
New Mexico and do that, you erase the last week
of basketball of Colorado State and Grand Canyon, where they
(20:13):
were very flat performances, won at home and went on
the road. You go into one of the toughest places
to play, certainly in the Mount West, and get a
win over a team that is really good and I
believe is the last team in the tournament field in
Joe Lonardi's bracket right now in New Mexico, then the
Aztecs are having a really massive statement heading into the
final week of the season.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
And also say it's oftentimes you look back on a
regular season and you never know what ends up being
the most important win. And for San Diego State. It
could have been the two wins against Nevada. It could
have been beaten the snot out of Nevada. Yeah, because
Nevada then went on a run where they beat Utah
State and New Mexico, which are two of the top teams,
and those were both Quad one games for Nevada. So
you look at what that means is San Diego State
(20:53):
wins seventy one to fifty seven against Nevada on February fourteenth,
turn around, and a week and a half later beat
Utah State eighty nine to seventy two. When Utah State's
coming off that lost to Nevada, that's double bonus for
San Diego State because everything is fluid and every one's
matchup against everyone else matters. So San Diego State is
back into being in a good spot, not a great spot,
(21:16):
and we'll see if they can get it done tomorrow. Man,
it really is, Samby Your point was so right where
it's like you've checked one thing off the box. Tomorrow
you have an even bigger box to check.
Speaker 3 (21:25):
Well, looking back at the first game, high scoring game
for the as Techs won eighty three to seventy nine.
These two teams in terms of stats are almost identical.
New Mexico gives up sixty nine points per game, the
Assets gip seventy. The Assets score eighty per game. New
Mexico scores seventy nine per game. So you talk about
two very evenly matched teams, it makes sense that New
Mexico is the favorite, slight favorite at home. Haul the
(21:47):
guard from Carlsbad is him fifteen. The first time they played,
he had fifteen. He averages sixteen on the season, So
big test for the as Techs. But if the Assets
come out and play with that fire that you felt
like they played pissed off on Wednesday night, that's where
the first time they played a full forty minutes. They
played like that at times throughout the year. That was
against Utah State was the first time this season they
(22:08):
put forty minutes together of really solid basketball play. And
I think you kind of go to this New Mexico
game as if I'm the Aztecs, I would assume I'm
not in the tournament. I would assume that, sure, the
next three games don't matter, and the next three games
are kind of a get right for the Mountain West
Conference tournament, and go out there, play care free and
see what happens versus playing as one of the top
dogs and feeling the pressure. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (22:29):
The first time these two teams played, that was kind
of Taje de Gorville's first really good game of the season.
He was in double figures if I'm remembering correctly. Miles
Bird dominated the second half of that game and fought
them back a couple different times. He finished over twenty in.
Speaker 3 (22:41):
That game, did twenty one.
Speaker 2 (22:42):
Yeah, and then farl Compton played really well too, So
maybe similar Aztecs can jump back up and play really well.
But I'm looking at Taj de Gorville and the way
he came in in the second half against Utah State
and kind of took over being the lead point guard
on the team against Utah State and thinking back to
his game against New Mexico, I think Taj is going
to be such an important critical east for this team
moving forward. Can he keep that positive momentum going And to.
Speaker 3 (23:04):
The ToJ piece. Everyone focused on the twelve points he hit.
Speaker 2 (23:07):
Eight assists, he's huge.
Speaker 3 (23:08):
That's a big number for a guy that doesn't play
the amount of minutes that usually would allow for eight assists.
If he's running the offense. That's a reason why people
were so excited about TODJ. De Gorville heading into the
season and kind of had a little bit of a
slow start there but starting to find his way again.
You play care free tomorrow night, you will get a win.
We're talking about probably back really on the cut line,
maybe in it, but we'll see what happens. It's gonna
(23:30):
be a great game.
Speaker 2 (23:30):
And I really don't like having those conversations, So go
ahead and get a win tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (23:34):
Make it easier on everyone.
Speaker 2 (23:35):
We'd love to see it all right at San Diego
Sports seven to sixty. By the way, that game tomorrow
is primetime college basketball maybe Saturday morning eleven am. That's
as good as it gets. And it's gonna be a
great basketball game at the pit, which is gonna be
a gnarly environment for San Diego State. Like understand, everything
we're saying right now about the Aztecs is also being
said in New Mexico because they're right there too. Like
this is they win this game tomorrow New Mexico and
(23:55):
trenches themself into March madness. They lose this game tomorrow,
they are outside the bubble looking at so everything we
just said about San Diego state, it's equally as big
for New Mexico, and that crowd will show up and
the pit is gonna be chaotic. San Diego Sports seven
sixty there was an interesting report today that I sent
over to Sammy Long and I hadn't seen this before,
but a starting pitcher who apparently had an offer from
(24:17):
the San Diego Padres, big big name. He turned down
the offer because of one very specific thing. We'll tell
you what that is. On the other side of San
Diego Sports seven sixty live on my Heart Radio app
Johnny Drama. Entourage is something this show knows very very well.
He did about ten times.
Speaker 3 (24:34):
Remember the great scene when Matt Damon wants Vinced to
donate to the kid phone with Lebron He's like, it's
a little light, bro, It's.
Speaker 2 (24:45):
A great, great show man. If you haven't seen Entourage,
I don't know what you're doing. I did see the
other day, Jeremy Piven posted to his Instagram account.
Speaker 3 (24:51):
I did see this.
Speaker 2 (24:52):
He was doing a comedy show somewhere and he looks
down the audience and guess who it is.
Speaker 3 (24:57):
It's Vinnie Chase, Adrian Grenier. Baby, how about it? He's
out of devil Worre's product too, How dare they? I
was like, you really got rid of Vinnie Chase.
Speaker 2 (25:06):
All I need is Queen's Boulevard two, and I'll be
fun Queen's Beaulevart. By the way, I would actually watch
a movie about Pablo Escobar starring Vinnie Chase, Like it's
such a hundred sucked in the Entourage universe. But the
trailer was great, But I would actually watch that movie.
Speaker 3 (25:20):
Everyone always goes, oh, Jason Momoa's Aquaman. No, we all
know who the real aquaman is, and that's Vinnie Chase.
Speaker 2 (25:26):
And it was the number one movie in the world.
They beat that little spider to death.
Speaker 3 (25:29):
Baby, remember when they're at the They're at the high
school party.
Speaker 2 (25:36):
It's a crazy show man. You gotta watch it if
you haven't seen it. But speaking of money, Entourage number
one movie in the world. Blah blah blah. Padres haven't
thrown around a ton of money this offseason. And we
actually don't know when this offer was. But Merril Kelly
was asked about stuff in his past to Major League
Baseball and he said at one point he actually had
a three year deal on the table with the San
Diego Padres. And he turned it down because the tax
(26:00):
implications of living in southern California, which, hey, we're there
right now, baby, it is tax season. I got a
second appointment with my tax guy coming up later this weekend.
We all get it. It kind of sucks living here
because of that in that alone, but it is kind
of fascinating that somebody would turn down something in Major
League Baseball contract like that just because of the tax.
(26:21):
So I actually did some digging. I went into Chad
GBT and I said, for Framber Valdez's most recent deal,
which one was it, It was one hundred and fifteen million, right,
one hundred and fifteen million for three years that he
signed with the Tigers. If he were to sign that
with the San Diego Padres, what would that mean? And
so it's very different signing deal where you are in
(26:42):
San Diego. His tax which not just his federal tax
which is already at like thirty five percent or something,
but he would add an additional thirteen point three to
fourteen point four percent on top of that for his contract.
So it is depending on where you signed, very very
different how much money you're actually taking home, which I
think is also part of the reason why Shoe hay
Atani is a okay with his contract being deferred as
(27:03):
much as.
Speaker 3 (27:03):
It is right, he's not gonna claim it in Los Angeles.
Speaker 2 (27:07):
Right, So it's just fascinating that the Padres sometimes started
a disadvantage there. Sounds like a nice excuse to me.
But maybe that's why Manny Machado got paid even more.
Speaker 3 (27:15):
It is kind of a real thing in that. Now,
Miami's a fun city for a lot of different reasons
why people want to go there, but why the Miami
Heat always a relevant spot if you think about it,
the Miami Like why the Miami Heat up there? With
the Lakers, the Nicks, the Celtics, the Bulls become income
tax now ingram tax Arizona same thing of course, Texas
(27:36):
playing for the Cowboys me, you're making maybe the most
money you could ever make. It is interesting. I guess
I gotta give I've been hard on ownership on John Tyler.
If we're not going out and spending, I guess I
gotta give him some credit. Because Merrill Kelly, that's a
that's a legit starting pitcher. That's not like, hey, we're
throwing a dark board at her mom. Marquez Griffin Canning,
(27:57):
a Walker Bueller, all guys that have major concerns, whether
they never showed it before at the major league level
or they in Walker Bueler's case, he's kind of passed
his prime after all the injuries he's had. Meryl Kelly
would have been a you're poaching him from, you know,
the Diamondbacks and the Rangers. But you're able to steal
(28:19):
a big time pitcher. He's a legit guy. I mean,
Meryl Kelly and Zach Allen were the reason why the
Diamondbacks went to the World Series a couple of years ago.
Remember they were. They became the two hottest pitchers in
baseball the last like two three weeks of the season
and just decimated the Dodgers, decimated the Phillies until they
ran into the Rangers. But I got to give ownership
a little credit. I guess if they were actually going
after Merrill Kelly because per all reports we heard, they
(28:41):
were priced out on Faran bra Valdez. They were priced
out on all these top guys. And maybe that's why.
Maybe that's why, because the taxes of Southern California, people
forg the taxes with the Dodgers because you're figuring if
you're going to the Dodgers, you're at least certainly a
favorite for the World Series or in the World Series
conversation every year, not that the Potterys aren't, but if
(29:03):
you're going to that second tier level team of hey,
we're a playoff team, we have a shot, but we're
not one of the favorites. And you get a choice
through the Diamondbacks and the Potterreys. Yeah, you probably look
at state income tax and go, I can make more
money in out in Phoenix. I'm gonna go there.
Speaker 2 (29:17):
You also can't cheat the system as good in California
because they have the jock tex which is like even
for people who live out of state and claim their
income out of state, but they still play for a
team in California. They're still getting hit. It's like fifteen
percent or something. It is crazy how this state just
kind of makes up different ways to make as much
money as possible. Sunshiny at tax baby, Yeah, well you
know what, we're getting a lot of it this weekend.
(29:39):
It's about to be ninety degrees in La Mesa today.
It's great, crazy man too hot, bring back the Winner.
Speaker 3 (29:44):
I like that. Oh what heat? It up.
Speaker 2 (29:47):
Ninety is too hot, nineties not too hot, ninety is
too hot for that feels good.
Speaker 3 (29:52):
You get a little tan on your little little sun.
Speaker 2 (29:54):
Seventy eight to seventy nine perfection. Anything above that starts
to get sweaty. And I'm sweaty all the time time,
so I just start to get more sweaty and more sweet.
Speaker 3 (30:02):
Sorry, if we're going your lunch break right now.
Speaker 2 (30:03):
You're welcome. If you're on your lunch break right now.
Speaking of sweaty, you know, wings sometimes sweat, Sammy, they
really do. Let's give away some tickets here on San
Diego Sports seven sixty. We have nine inch Nails tickets.
They're playing March ninth at Pachanga Arena. If you would
like to go to that show, be collar number nine
nine Nails.
Speaker 3 (30:20):
Get it.
Speaker 2 (30:21):
Oh that's not bad, Sammy, well done. Eight seven seven
seven six seven four seven sixty. If you'd like to
go see the nine inch Nails at Pachanga Arena, ticketmaster
dot com for tickets and info.
Speaker 3 (30:29):
What you got Sam Texas seven zero four seven Zeros
tarking mess with a team. We have some phenomenal text
rolling in right now that we will certainly get to
on the other side, on.
Speaker 2 (30:37):
The other side, as well as long shots coming up
next in San Diego Sports seven sixty. You're listening live
on iHeart Radio app six one nine. The Turtle, The Hair,
and the Millionaire from Gary Busey from Entourage. Fantastic Gary
Busey on Entourage. Some of the funniest episodes.
Speaker 3 (30:50):
They talked about there, like he is, you know, the
exact same person, like he was playing himself, Like they're like,
he's you know, you'd think he's gonna kill you at
any secre, like he was like a massive fan. But
and then my favorite was been Andrew dice Clay and
Johnny Drama. Oh, Johnny Banana Show.
Speaker 2 (31:10):
Also I would watch That Monkey Show with Andrew dice Clay,
Johnny Dramady Andy hilarious. Uh six one nine with all
the stuff going down south. A good movie recommendation is
Sacario have a good weekend jants from Brian. That movie
is incredible, man, I would Sam and I were talking
about it during the commercial break because of that Tex
Brian and I remember seeing it in theaters definitely the
second one. I don't know if I saw the first
one in theaters, but you have a hard time breathing
(31:34):
during that movie, like it is tense the whole time.
Abco del Toro's acting performance is so amazing.
Speaker 3 (31:41):
Yeah, the first scene where they're like walking in the
hot I mean you're like, it's it's so tense. Six
one five Sammy, it takes a real man to play
wake Me Up before you Go Go as your buffer song.
I personally wouldn't do it, but again, it takes a
real man.
Speaker 2 (31:56):
Six one five year also calling Sammy a real man
with that.
Speaker 3 (31:58):
I don't know, man, it's a great song.
Speaker 2 (32:01):
Look at that.
Speaker 3 (32:01):
Shout out to George Michael Man.
Speaker 2 (32:03):
Five minutes before the show today was really working on
his hair to make sure it look good.
Speaker 3 (32:08):
Well, I do this little video on the on tanty
with sports hat of sixty Instagram, kind of teasing what's
going up with the show, and the other night I
did it or the other day I did it, and
then I saw it at night and I had a
wing up in my hair and it was really it
bothered me a little too much.
Speaker 2 (32:21):
Actually, that's why he plays wake me Up before I
Go go af I eight As a fellow sweaty man
in his thirties, I agreed ninety degrees is too hot.
It's too hot, man, it's too hot. It's too Okay,
we need seventy five and Sonny, that's what we pay
for here.
Speaker 3 (32:33):
A ninety though. You sit outside, got a nice little corona,
getting a little tan on.
Speaker 2 (32:37):
I grew up in a place that would regularly get
to like one oh six, one oh seven. I don't
need that anymore. Sam, you live for in Arizona for
a while. That's why nineties not too hot to you.
But for those of us.
Speaker 3 (32:47):
Who lived in Palm Springs and Phoenix, and.
Speaker 2 (32:50):
Palm Springs is the worst. Man, My wife loves it there,
so we go quite a bit. It is the worst
when it's harms of heat. Yeah, you can't even breathe
it so hot.
Speaker 3 (32:58):
The best thing, though, is when you play golf in
the heat, it's you kind of forget about it.
Speaker 2 (33:02):
If it's that is so not true.
Speaker 3 (33:05):
I love it. I love it's like hot you just
the you're drinking beer. It's just you know.
Speaker 2 (33:11):
I played golf and Bomp Springs one time, and I
think I sweat so much that I didn't pee for
an entire day.
Speaker 3 (33:17):
The problem if you're gonna play golf and Palm Springs
or Phoenix. You have to get up at seven am
and start because by the by the end, if it's
like eleven thirty, you're like, pick up your ball and
let's go.
Speaker 2 (33:26):
No matter how much gatorade and water you drink, there's
just nothing left inside it.
Speaker 3 (33:30):
The worst, though, is if you're playing golf with someone
who thinks they're really good and they're not. So they're
like measuring their ball, they're measuring their putts and it's
one hundred and twenty degrees outside, Like, baby, buddy, we're
not on the eighteenth green at Augusta Pas.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
You gotta move it. In fact, if you read the
puff for more than twenty seconds, I start laughing at
you and throwing things at you. That's kind of the
rule on the golf course. All right, Sammy, let's get
to long shots. Rough one last night, two out of three.
It happens. It happens all the time.
Speaker 3 (33:53):
Actually, Houston twenty five, the Magic are up in the
game and Houston goes on a twenty five zero run, Like,
what are we doing? Frustrating?
Speaker 2 (34:02):
It happens two out of three is like if two
out of three paid out, we would be rich.
Speaker 3 (34:06):
By the way I called Michigan State seven and a
half point dogs, money.
Speaker 2 (34:11):
Line upset six one nine ninety as hot as ball, Sammy,
come on, brother, I gotta something. Lemon, grow the funny
A five eight. Don't get it confused. The best guest
on Entourage was Sasha Gray. I'm still pissed Vinie messed
that up.
Speaker 3 (34:24):
Oh Sasha problemse Sasha got him hooked on that sauce again.
Speaker 2 (34:27):
No, I no, All of a sudden, Vidie was doing
drugs again. But she was a pretty good guest. She
was a good actress. She's a good actress. She's really good, fantastic.
Give her some credit. All right, sam Let's get some
long shots, going smash where you get fired. You looking
for some luck.
Speaker 3 (34:41):
I want to win big.
Speaker 2 (34:44):
He was so money. We don't even know any time
to take a chance. Pay that's me and his money
with long shots.
Speaker 3 (34:54):
All right. We got parlay here. We got a little
UFC action, little college basketball action, as well as a
little what's going on over there?
Speaker 2 (35:02):
Not just having a conversation with someone else. I apologize, Okay,
go ahead, Sammy, all right, we're gonna start with uh,
I got it right here.
Speaker 3 (35:10):
I just lost that in my apologies Okay, Duke, Virginia
number one Duke taking on Virginia number eleven in the country.
This is where Vegas wants you to bet Duke. Duke
comes off a massive win last weekend over Michigan, great performance,
beats the crap out of Notre Dame on Tuesday or Wednesday,
I mean absolutely slaughters them. I believe it was one
(35:32):
of the biggest wins in the ACC history in terms
of just pure percentage points. But Virginia is quietly coming
in on like a four or five game winning streak.
Their last loss was to North Carolina. They lost by five.
It was an excellent game. They've been playing some good ball.
Beat up on NC State, beat Miami by three. He
was always a tough test. Whooped up on Georgia Tech
(35:53):
beat Ohio State. Duke is nine and a half point
favorites in this one. I'm not saying Virginia's gonna win
this thing outright, but I feel like that's a little
bit too much, too large of a line. It's a
recency bias. Again, Duke deserves all the credit in the world.
They beat Michigan, they destroyed utther day, and the Notre
Dame is not very good this year. And the problem
with Duke, although they're really talented, it really flows through Boozer.
(36:15):
The team in the tournament gives me actually a little
pause because you feel like if Boozer does have a
bad night, they aren't really extremely deep team. Boozer is
going to be a top three pick in the NBA draft.
He's probably going after Peterson and Debosta. But overall, Virginia
has been nice. Derritor has been fantastic for them, averaging
about sixteen points a game as well as six rebounds
a game. They have four players in double digits. Give
(36:38):
me Virginia on the road. Plus nine and a half
taken on the Duke.
Speaker 2 (36:42):
Bluelvis and Cameron Indoor gives me a little pause. But
Faith and Sammy because of the number nine and a half,
it's a big number.
Speaker 3 (36:50):
It's a big number, big number. All right, We're going
to the UFC.
Speaker 2 (36:53):
Duke's really good at home.
Speaker 3 (36:55):
They are Brandon Moreno taking on Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh's plus one eight.
This is an interesting fight because Brandon Moreno. Brand Moreno's
trying to become a three time champion now in the
Flyway division. I go back and forth on this fight
because Cavanaugh is a little undersized. So Cavanaugh was this
(37:16):
this top prospect in the UFC, started out eight to zero,
actually had a brutal loss, a TKO loss last August,
kind of stopped the freight train a little bit in
his tracks. Moreno fighting in Mexico City, you gotta feel
like this is gonna be I'm not saying it's home
cooking judging, but Brandon Moreno is a massive star, a
(37:36):
massive Mexican star in the UFC. For the UFC Moreno,
this is really his last shot because you look at
Moreno and he's gone two and two in his last
four fights. If he can't crack and win this one
in Mexico City, I don't know where that leaves him
in the division. But Cavanaugh again is a small flyway.
I think this is a tailor made fit for Brandon Moreno.
Brandon Reno minus two eighteen on the money line. I
(37:59):
also like if you can grab it over four and
a half rounds. Over four and a half rounds in
his last two fights, he's gone the distance and again
with the sizest advantage of Kavanaugh. A lot of these
guys that we build in the UFC in boxing as
the next thing. This is the next the next star
don't always live up to that. I think fighting on
the road in Moreno's hometown gonna be a lot. But
(38:20):
I don't know if Moreno at his age age thirty
two has the power to take Kavanaugh out. And considering
he is two and two in his last four fights,
is he a lil hestin? Does he still have that
same killer instinct that he had back in twenty twenty one.
So we're gonna go full five rounds, but with the
brand of Moreno wins, so winner by technical decision, all right.
And then we're gonna go a couple NBA picks here.
(38:45):
I was debating going with Golden sat In the Lakers,
but I don't feel like picking against my Lakers, even
though Golden State probably is the side there. And there's
a primetime game tomorrow night. We're going Calves Pistons in
this one, which get going tonight? All right? Pistons minus
five and a half, we're gona take. We're gonna take
the under in this game under two hour and twenty
seven and a half. Calves missing some of their biggest stars,
(39:08):
James Harden dealing with that thumb injury, Isaiah Stewart for
the Pistons today, already bragging about how he's one of
the best defenders in the NBA, trying to take on
that Draymond Greens type role. That's the kind of dirty
secret with the Pistons is although Kate Cunningham is there's
all the credit a star Thompson, they're an elite scoring team.
Between Jalen Duran and company. They played really good defense.
(39:29):
I mean, Ron Holland Thompson, Kate Cunningham, they're all elite
defenders and taking on you feel like the Calves we
remember before James Harden got there, and now there's all
this buzz with the Calves. Could James Harden and the
Donovan Mitchell go on a run of the finals. Donovan Mitchell,
the reason why they struggled for the first half a
year and had to make the deal to get James
(39:51):
Harden is because he didn't have a running mate. And
Darius Garland was supposed to be that guy. Now he's
with the Clippers, but never really could stay healthy enough.
Wasn't really that elite number two option. Sitting here looking
at Donovan Mitchell, I feel like this is a game
by himself he's got to take on I know Mobile
and them are really elite down low, but the Pistons
are well equipped to take him out of it with
Durin and Isaiah Stewart. I like the under in this game.
(40:14):
It's a high number, two twenty seven and a half.
We're gonna take the under on Tonight's NBA, and you.
Speaker 2 (40:20):
Could just say it. We could all put the Warriors
money line on this as well.
Speaker 1 (40:25):
You could just say it, Sammy, I'm not doing that, Naithan. Sammy,
you could just say it, I'm not doing that. You
can just say I'm not betting against my boys. They
drive me crazy. I can't do it.
Speaker 2 (40:36):
You could just say it, Sammy, it's okay.
Speaker 3 (40:39):
Under two twenty seven and a half. Okay, the Detroit
Pistons and the Cleveland Cavaliers taking the under. I like
Virginia on the road. Yes, I know, it's Cameron Indoor
plus nine and a half though a huge number for Duke.
Give me Virginia plus well taking the points at plus
nine and a half and Brandon Moreno. I like him
minus two eighteen to win. But if you want to
juice up the parlor a little bit, I like him
(41:00):
to win by decision. I believe that's going off at
plus one fifty right now, So get you some plus
money line picks there.
Speaker 2 (41:06):
I don't know how the text line hasn't brought up
Polly Shores run as a guest on Entourage when he
was trying to get revenge on Johnny Drama. How about
Bob Saggett, who is in that neighborhood with those guys.
There was some great guest stars on Enourage. But if
you want to keep that going, the Spade Jessicalba David
Spage just made fun of himself the whole time. That
was pretty funny. Jessicalba was a smoke show like she's
(41:26):
always been, forever always in season one, Scarlott Johansson, Scar
Joe wasn't it? Arrer was in it for a little bit.
Speaker 3 (41:33):
Remember Vinny, he hooked him up with the date Vinnie.
Speaker 2 (41:36):
Sure, but Vinnie lost his mind a little bit when
Manny Moore was around.
Speaker 3 (41:41):
Yeah, dude, many more driving man driven.
Speaker 2 (41:43):
Men many Moore. She did to all of us at
one point in our lives, all of us.
Speaker 3 (41:47):
Six one nine is asking why Santego Sate is not
in long Shots. I want santy Go s to win.
I don't want to put that pressure on them on
the road.
Speaker 2 (41:53):
Yeah, because they're all listening right now.
Speaker 3 (41:54):
So yeah, I'm gonna get a DAN from Milesburg like, Yo, dude,
stop putting pressure on me.
Speaker 2 (41:59):
Sammy, It's probably smart for you to leave them off
of long shots before.
Speaker 3 (42:02):
I get a call from San Diego State going, why
are you advocating for gambling?
Speaker 2 (42:05):
Yeah, just don't, San Diego Sport, it's not gambling, it's trading.
We've been very clear that gamming. You're trading, it's investing. Also,
this is like a four oh one K, but even better, it's.
Speaker 3 (42:14):
Like the NIL Collective. You're investing back in the program
to then give to the NIL collective. Should you so
choose go.
Speaker 2 (42:20):
Astex dot com forwards Last impact, San Diego Sports seven sixty.
We got a whole another hour of this coming up
next week. You been Aztecs basketball tickets for you coming
up on the other side for their regular season finale
against UNLV at v AHAs Arena. All that still coming up,
as well as Steve Hartman's weekly appointment. At one point thirty,
it's San Diego Sports seven sixty. You're listening live on
my heart radio app,
