Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome soon.

Speaker 2 (00:02):
I'm Ben Fletcher. That's Sammy Long now not pluck. You
got up there? I like mind sand stiff heyo.

Speaker 3 (00:08):
Ready for the weekend. The podres up and Down Spring
continues today versus the Rockies and who's someone new be
signing those paychecks before Opening Day? After a big win
on the MESA versus Utah State, the Aztext are back
on the road versus New Mexico.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
We break down the game and SDFC.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Looks to build on last week's big opening win over
CF Montreal when they host Saint Lewis FC Sunday. Who's
watching the NFL combine anyone?

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Anyone? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (00:38):
I know I have issues.

Speaker 4 (00:40):
Plus So we're going to Magic plus two and a
half against Houston.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
Wing, gonna miss Philadelphia a.

Speaker 4 (00:45):
Couple of spread at home against Miami Philly minus two
and a half.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
Take a close look, and I rule baby.

Speaker 4 (00:52):
Give us tom Izzo and the Michigan State Spartans plus
seven and a half on the road, take out on
the pretty boiler.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
Micas talking about it all right now in the flex sho.

Speaker 5 (01:04):
Number two here on San Diego Sports seven sixty. Come on,
a big voice, guy, of course, we got our eyes
on the underwear Olympics. Of course, offensive and defense on
the TV right now, the arm lengths that seems to
be the big deal. Remember a couple of years ago
was the height with Kyler Murray. A few years before that,
it was the hand size with Russell Wilson. This year
it appears to be the arm length with offensive and

(01:25):
defensive line.

Speaker 4 (01:26):
Have you seen Sonny Styles, linebacker Ohio State, shooting up
draft boards because he had some crazy forty time for
defensive lineman.

Speaker 5 (01:32):
A bunch of verticals that are hitting the tapes. Somebody
just broke some sort of record. Yeah, the NFL combine
is what the NFL combine is, and ultimately it's just
kind of funny to me. Honest, if you're not a
NFL scout and you're watching all of this stuff, what
does it actually mean to you? The answer is not
a whole lot. It's like, oh, wow, that guy's really fast.
Hey he can jump really high. That's cool.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
But I like it.

Speaker 4 (01:52):
Because you get to see who I like it compared to.
Because we see guys play on the field and we
think of what where they should go in mock drafts,
and then it's always interesting to me to see guys
who excel through combine said this yesterday, Trayvon like eight
hundredson was the Shurfire number one pick out of Michigan. Right,
no one even questioned it. All of a sudden, Trayvon

(02:13):
Walker has some unbelievable combine. Scouts overthink it. Take Trayvon
Walker right in, Hudginson. Look how that's working out for
you in the NFL.

Speaker 5 (02:21):
The best part about the NFL combine to me is
when you see, like George Kittle's NFL combine, he had
short hair, he was kind of skinny. Tom Brady's NFL
combine he had a little bit of a pot belly
on him. And so ten fifteen years later after the fact,
you get to put the combine picture up next to
the current day picture and all of them changed so much.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
That's what I like about the NFL.

Speaker 5 (02:40):
What if Chris Jones has changed Chris Jones, I would
imagine the parts that we saw at the combine are
probably still the same, but I could be wrong.

Speaker 2 (02:47):
Things change over time.

Speaker 5 (02:48):
They're surgical procedures you could have as well, So maybe
Chris Jones has changed a lot.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
CJ shouts to Chris Joe watched that.

Speaker 5 (02:54):
Video this morning, actually randomly showed it to TD and
Kat who had not seen it before.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
That sounds like haras well.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
They were one.

Speaker 5 (03:02):
It was part of my sports story over on the
rock station. I was talking about the NFL combine, and
so of course I had to bring up the most
popular memory of everyone's NFL combine, which was Chris Jones
falling and uh more of him falling out.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
But it is San Diego. Chris Jones is so proud
he like didn't face him at all.

Speaker 5 (03:20):
No, it messed up as forty time. I mean he
literally face planted to cover everything up. It was hilarious.
I remember watching that live with Judson Richards somehow the
Times were watching that live in this studio actually, and
Judd had the best lie ever.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
He said, was that his And yes it was. It
was his wife. Shout out to Chris Jones.

Speaker 5 (03:40):
Shout out to Chris Jones, who knew he'd be a
Hall of Famer one day. He had a Hall of
Fame moment for sure. I wonder if that's the picture
they put up in Kenton when he gets into the
Hall of Fame.

Speaker 4 (03:47):
Yeah, it's very very charged up show today. Chris Jones
got Magic City and the Atlanta Hawks.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
All about the Wings institution. How about this.

Speaker 5 (03:59):
SDFC is going to be back at snap Dragon Stadium
coming up on Sunday night.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
They got Saint Louis City.

Speaker 5 (04:03):
Pregame coverage with Adrian Garcia Marquez and Darren Smith will
begin at five thirty right here on your home for
SDFC San Diego Sports seven sixty. It's funny. I'm looking
at those two gentlemen right now from across the other
side of the glass. Good to see you, boys, and
maybe we'll see if they can stop in for a
chat here before they get out of here for the day.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
But always gonna be fun.

Speaker 5 (04:22):
They're off to a hot start again, scoring a bunch
of goals, so we'll see if they can keep that
thing rolling on Sunday night when they got Saint Louis City.
All right, we're gonna get to the Big three kind
of quickly here and then we're gonna talk some padres
on the other side with all the new ownership stuff
coming on.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Steve Hartman will be here at one thirty.

Speaker 5 (04:35):
We still have a pair of Aztecs tickets for you
coming up on the show today, so don't go anywhere
it is San Diego Sports seven sixty.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
Sammy Smash It Cure.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
Lunch Freak is here.

Speaker 3 (04:46):
Ready to go back to the office and knock the
socks off your friends.

Speaker 1 (04:50):
I mean co workers.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
Goads time from the top stories of the day five three, three.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
Three, six one nine.

Speaker 5 (04:58):
Doing a little waffling on some long sh jus on,
Sammy says Virginia is overrated.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
It's true.

Speaker 5 (05:02):
But however, if this game stay is closed, Duke cannot
hit free throws for our buddy, so kel Jaha got
a feeling, so sokw knows his stuff.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
Nine and a half is a lot of points.

Speaker 4 (05:10):
Nine and a half is a lot of points for
a team that's feeling pretty good about themselves on a
five game win streak, And if you're a Duke, psychologically,
it's tough to get up for this game. When last week,
last Saturday was the pinnacle, it was like, Michigan is
the team no one can beat. They're they're the favorites
to win the whole thing. You go out and win
on a neutral flour in Washington, DC. Psychologically, coming off

(05:34):
a massive win of Notre Dame, I feel like this
game means a lot more to Virginia than it does
to the Duke Blue Devils.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Where we going with the big three?

Speaker 4 (05:40):
Samy Okay, so friend of Mendoza, there's a lot made
this week. I feel like it was like everyone got
so high on Frandom Mendoza. It was he's a surefire
number one pick, and he's the he's the franchise savior
for the Raiders. Then you have ESPN punts like Dana
Rolovskis saying to the first eight weeks of his tape,
he has an act. She love what he saw from

(06:01):
Fana Mendoza. But as of a report this morning, Fana
Mendoza is met with Tom Brady, excited for a potential
Brady mentorship, called it a quote fantastic meeting Q.

Speaker 5 (06:14):
Ninety million people saying Tom Brady shouldn't be allowed to
call games and be an owner at the same time. Look,
that'd be huge for him. And he's actually on TV
talking right now with Laura Rutledge. Uh, Mendoza is gonna
have to overcome some stuff. I think he's largely the
number one overall pick going into this year because of
a lack of quarterback talent around him in this year's
draft class. It had it been different, had there been

(06:35):
some other guys who are even just coming out in
this draft class, I do think we're having a different conversation,
and that's kind of making for a more boring draft
this year because we're talking about lineman and wide receivers
instead of quarterbacks like we had the Baker Draft where
there was a million quarterbacks who got taken. So I look,
I like Mendoza, I do. I think he showed a
lot in the college football playoff run. Obviously, having Tom
Brady in your corner is gonna help out a ton.

(06:58):
But get ready for all the people to complain of
the other NFL franchises who are saying, no, this is
an unfair advantage. Vermont knows a.

Speaker 4 (07:06):
It's it's odd. I don't think it's an unfair advantage.
It's an odd situation that Tom Brady is meeting with teams.
He's I mean, people don't know broadcasters are meeting with
teams ahead of ahead of matchups all week, and there are.

Speaker 5 (07:23):
Certain rules that prevent Tom Brady from doing certain things
that other broadcasters get to do.

Speaker 4 (07:27):
Right, So, because I mean, you get a look at practice,
you get to look at stuff like that, I'm I
don't fall Tom Brady from being in the position he's
in now. I'd also don't fall teams being like Brady,
respectfully get that out, like I don't. I don't want
you sitting in our meetings talking if like the Chiefs
are playing the Raiders, the Chargers playing the Raiders, the Broncos.
I'm sure they're like absolutely not, like, we don't want

(07:49):
this all going back to you. In regards to Mendoza,
I'm curious the least that he gets because and what
I mean by that is he's gonna be the number
one pick.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
He's going He's going to Vegas.

Speaker 4 (08:01):
But it's very plausible that despite them having Gen, despite
them having Bowers, we'll see if they still end up
having Max Crosby, that they have a terrible record. Look
at the division they planned, Chiefs, Broncos, Chargers. You're easily
picked to finish fourth in that regard. That's not even
counting the other teams that you're going to be playing.
And we've seen ever since Josh Rosen the Cardinals, is

(08:23):
Josh Rosen the prospect that he was, that Mendoza is
no Josh Rosen, one of the top picks for the
Cardinals then ends up they flip.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
Him for Kyler Murray a year later.

Speaker 4 (08:33):
It's just it's very interesting that next year the Raiders
could easily be right back in this position as a
top five pick, and knowing that Arch Manning and Leonora's
Sellers and Jane mob and Dante war are all coming out.
If he doesn't look great this rookie season, I wonder
if we're having chatter a year from today about are
the Raiders taking a quarterback and.

Speaker 5 (08:52):
It may not be his fault, man, and maybe the
Raider's fault. They can't get out of their own way sometime.
I would also say this on the Tom Brady front
real quick. I was thinking about this the other day. Actually,
who's to.

Speaker 2 (09:01):
Say that Troy Aikman doesn't get on the phone with
Dak Prescott fair?

Speaker 5 (09:05):
Who is to say that Dan Founce, when he was
working for CBS would to get on the phone with
Philip Rivers.

Speaker 4 (09:09):
But I guess it's fair, and I'm not I get
your point. The counter to that is, none of them
have a control, have a stake in the Dallas Cowboys
or the Chargers being good. There may be fans, but
Brady gets literally more money in his pockets from the
Raiders winning.

Speaker 5 (09:28):
It is the overblown though. People make a bigger deal
autom than it needs to actually be. Like it's we
all have the internet too, you know what I mean,
Like we all can watch as much film as Tom
Brady watches if we wanted to.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
And I think I think we gets brought out of proportion.

Speaker 4 (09:42):
Is if you're Tom Brady and you're doing this and
you're giving insider information, ay, you know people are looking
out for it. And number two, if that is the case,
you ruin your five hundred million dollar becaushy job of Fox.
I mean you talk about like people are going to
be through. I think Tom Brady's kind of changed his
reputation the last few years. He's went from everyone hates

(10:03):
Tom Brady to it's kind of a goofball. He's like
he's kind of likable. Like on the broadcast, you sit
there and go, I think he's really improved.

Speaker 5 (10:10):
He's posting weird selfies from his bedroom and his pjs.
That was bizarre. He looked like a sixteen year old
girl for a second there, Tom, But yes, he is
more likable.

Speaker 4 (10:17):
Now, look like Tom Brady probably do all right. What's
the next sim sticking with the NFL, who is the
chance to be this year?

Speaker 2 (10:26):
Sam Darnold next season?

Speaker 5 (10:28):
I like it. My answer is Kyler Murray. It has
been for a few weeks now. I actually do think
he could totally remake his perception of himself this year,
depending on where he goes. I don't love the fit
of Cleveland, but if Kyler Murray can land somewhere that's productive,
and Kyler Murray can kind of show the skill that
he has somewhere not named the Arizona Cardinals, I really
think he can totally change how everybody views him. And

(10:50):
I don't know about a Super Bowl run for Kyler
Murray in the coming years, but I do think that
he can go from kind of a forgotten about peace
in Arizona, who was largely disappointing while he was there.
It's all of a sudden bouncing right back and having
a really good season next year.

Speaker 4 (11:05):
Yeah, okay, I'm a roll with you on Kyler Murray.
Kyler Murray makes the most sense. He has the most
talent of anyone available. Your Kirk Cousins or Aaron Rodgers
or two attacker by Lois. You're Malik Willis I Kyler Murray,
I think we're.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
Yes. With the Cardinals.

Speaker 4 (11:22):
It didn't really work out the last few years, but
as we've seen with Sam Donald, Let's not forget what
people were saying about Sam Donald, Baker Mayfield and Gino Spint.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
These guys can't play.

Speaker 4 (11:30):
They suck all this stuff, and then they go to
a well run organization and all of a sudden they
have success. The Cardinals aren't the Jets or the Panthers,
but they're they're closer to the Jets of the Panthers
than they are to you know, the Eagles and and
the Patriots and teams like that.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
They're not well run, They're not really have been.

Speaker 5 (11:49):
They had Kurt Warner for a little bit and one
of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history in Larry Fitzgerald.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
Now, if you're if you're Kyler Murray.

Speaker 4 (11:57):
But the one concern is that for all the like
crap that's been talked about Kyler Murray and that he
plays video games, he doesn't care. He's kind of an
a hole like that's that's kind of what has been
said about him. No teammates have ever come to his defense. Correct,
Maybe he are those things. He is those things, but
I do I will agree with you that Kyler Murray
could be next year. Sam Darld, I'm curious though, all

(12:19):
this buzz on Malik Willis, Like, Malik Willis is getting love.
Apparently he's like the hottest ticket in free agency.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
Which is bizarre to me. North of thirty million dollars
per year.

Speaker 4 (12:28):
Everyone's thinking that he's going to Miami because he played
with Halfley in Green Bay.

Speaker 2 (12:34):
It's like, does this guy off a couple starts?

Speaker 4 (12:36):
Are is a team really gonna pay him a franchise
quarterback money off a few starts.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
I don't really get the Malik Willis thing.

Speaker 5 (12:44):
I'm assuming there's a lot of people that know a
lot more than me and Sammy Long about who Malik
Willis is and how good he can be in this league.
But off of what we've seen from him, there's no
sean I'd be bade him thirty million dollars, but for
one year, what does it hurt you?

Speaker 4 (12:58):
I guess right, if it's a fly inflated deal, sure,
but if you're thinking like off a couple he's.

Speaker 2 (13:04):
Not getting Kirk Cousins money.

Speaker 5 (13:05):
He's not getting that contract that Kirk Cousins signed with Atlanta.

Speaker 4 (13:08):
Right, but thirty million plus and you're the thinking about
a bidding war. The guy's barely played quarterbacks are worth
a lot.

Speaker 3 (13:15):
Man.

Speaker 4 (13:16):
All right, Let's head to San Diego State, take it
out New Mexico tomorrow in the pit? Who uh? What
is your number one key to an Aztecs win? And
if they win this game, if they win the next
three games, do you think they're getting in March Madison's
an at large bid?

Speaker 5 (13:29):
Yes to that part in terms of key, this is
gonna sound really goofy. And I promise you I actually
mean this with all my heart. And I told Sammy
this off air yesterday. If you can go back and
watch the difference between the Grand Canyon game, the Colorado
State game, and the Utah State game, do you know
what the biggest difference is?

Speaker 2 (13:49):
Smiles?

Speaker 5 (13:50):
And I'm not even kind of joking, Like, watch the
tape of Utah State, Grand Canyon and Colorado State and
see what the biggest difference you see in that game is.
Yet San Diego State's playing more as a team. Yes,
some more shots are going in. Look at Magoon Gwatt's face,
Look at Miles Bird's face. Look at Reesticks and Water's face.
Look at BJ Davis's face. They played looser, but a

(14:12):
little more intense against Utah State than any of those
other games I was just talking about, and I do
think it makes a big difference. The mentality of this
team sways so much back and forth from game to game.
I want that team that came out against Utah State
every day of the week because they were playing loose,
they were playing pissed off. Like you said, they also
had a smile on their face essentially the entire game,
and I think that makes a big difference.

Speaker 2 (14:32):
When Magoon's smiling, he plays great. When he's frowning, he
plays terrible.

Speaker 4 (14:35):
There is a vibee you could tell last week against
Colorado State that they didn't look right.

Speaker 2 (14:39):
But the whole team just found out their dog is sick.

Speaker 4 (14:42):
It did look It looked like they came into the
game thinking they were gonna win. Sho kind of sulkin
about that Grand Canyon loss, and it showed in Colorado State,
to their credit, we're playing with their hair on fire
as well as Tuesday or Wednesday night, the Asteys played
that way with a sense of urgency.

Speaker 2 (14:58):
I'm gonna go with the.

Speaker 4 (14:58):
Bench dep That was the biggest thing that stood out
to me. It's easy to look at Resix and Waters
twenty points, Mcgoongwothe nine rebounds, and the Stars played well.
Miles Bird was fantastic coming out of half. But look
at the bench. Three players in double digits. You had
Taj to Gorbal with twelve, Tay Simmons eleven, Faraoh Compton
eleven and BJ Davis narrowly hitting double digits with eight

(15:20):
to go. On the road, You're gonna have to really
rely on depth because you know they're gonna go on runs.
It's going there's going to be scoring droughts. You're playing
it on in a road college basketball game, in a tough,
brutal environment. You gotta have where there can't be a
drop off where it can't just be the stars clicking.
Especially if we've seen at times that one guy will

(15:40):
have a big night, whether it's re six and Waters
or Miles Bird or Mcgoongwath and a couple of other
of them struggle.

Speaker 2 (15:47):
I'm going with the bench.

Speaker 4 (15:48):
If they win this game, we're gonna be talking about
Faroll Compton, Taj de Gorvill, BJ Davis, one of these
guys is gonna have to have a huge performance off
the bench. So the depth, I'm curious. They played ten
guys on their last time out. Odin didn't play. Sean
Newman Junior only played six minutes. They're saying that's because
he was sick. But you know, we'll see. Maybe they're
shorting their rotation. It obviously worked for him the other night.

(16:08):
I'm curious to see how how deep they go in
the rotation.

Speaker 2 (16:11):
To be fun, y'all want more? Was that three that
was three perfect, seven to six zero was a great
tex So we get to the others one we can. Yes.

Speaker 5 (16:17):
Also, if you haven't seen it from John Hayman, he
has put out kind of the first shot that I
do believe is directly from the owners of Major League
Baseball talking about what the proposed salary cap number would
be in Major League Baseball as well as the salary
fo We'll tell you that on the other side and
why the Players Association will never go for it. That's
coming up next, as well as news on the Padres
front with new ownership Steve Hartman coming up at one thirty.

(16:40):
Aztecs hoops tickets coming up for you in less than
ten minutes, don't go anywhere.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
At San Diego Sports seven sixty.

Speaker 5 (16:45):
You're listening live my Heart radio app spoken about what
a potential salary cap will be for Major League Baseball,
and I'm telling you right now, the Players Union, a
players association, will never ever go for this. So this
is according to John Hayman says early estimates suggests proposed
salary cap might be set around two hundred and sixty
to two hundred and eighty million dollars and a floor

(17:06):
of around one hundred and forty and one hundred and
sixty million dollars. So baseball is heading towards this era
of uncertainty here where potentially in twenty twenty seven, we
don't have a baseball season. I promise you this. If
this is where the owners are starting, probably not gonna
be a baseball season coming up in twenty twenty seven.
In fact, I would say, if John Hayman's numbers are accurate,
and this is what the owners are thinking in Major

(17:28):
League Baseball, they will float this out and this is
their way of essentially telling the players, yeah, you might
as well just start striking.

Speaker 4 (17:36):
Yeah, it's shame, it's it's a shame. That point I
gonna have baseball next year, because.

Speaker 5 (17:41):
Like that number has to start with a three, and
it probably needs to be three fifty for the pliers
to even sit down and have a conversation.

Speaker 4 (17:48):
Right, what's crazy is what the NFL salary cap is.
What just came into a three hundred eight I think eight,
So it is kind of crazy that the MLB revenue
in NFL revenue is not even comparable. So to your point,
the players are gonna one three in front of it,
but it's like the owners are gonna go there's no way.

(18:10):
I mean, if the NFL is sitting there over three
hundred and it's by far the most popular sports league
in America, how is baseball?

Speaker 5 (18:18):
Yeah, the NFL ownership is so much stronger than the
NFL players Association. The MLB players Association has been so
much stronger than MLB ownership over the years. And they're
coming from a starting position of no salary cap, just
luxury tacks and trying to enforce the salary tacks for
the first time or force the salary.

Speaker 4 (18:35):
And you're seeing what players like Bryce Harper made Machadda,
all the stars in the league. The talking point is
going to be the Dodgers. The Dodgers are spending too
much money. The Dodgers are going back to back World series.
We'll see what happens this year. But the players are
coming out defending the Dodgers. Mani Machado defending the Dodgers,
and they're spending talking about Bryce Harper defending the Dodgers

(18:56):
in their spending. It's it's gonna be a tough sticking
point for or for the owners because you can't really
use that against them because you thought heading into it,
like fans are like tired of the Dodgers just spending
all his money. But if the players aren't tired of
the Dodgers spending all the money, then you're gonna have
this tough battle. I think the owners would be better
off to start with a salary cap floor if you

(19:18):
started with that, because that's just as bad or more
of a problem than the Dodgers spending the amount of
money that they spent. Because at the end of the day,
you can be frustrated the Dodgers spending all the money,
and I totally understand, like it's it is they have
a TV deal, They're the biggest thing happening in Japan,
so they're able to pay pay all this. They're just
able to write checks that a lot of other teams

(19:39):
can't cash. But at least they're trying to win, whereas
half of major League Baseball is like not even trying.
The Miami Marlins, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the A's, you can
go down the list. I mean, it's a shame. It's
a system that needs to be fixed. But even when
it does get fixed, like let's say there is a
salary cap, let's say they get everything they want, they
come to agreement. It's not like the Dodgers are going anywhere.

(20:02):
They're not making them redo the Showo Tony contract or,
the Edwin Diaz contract or Kyle Tucker. I mean, this
is really setting it up for maybe ten years down
the road.

Speaker 5 (20:11):
Yeah, I don't know what that looks like, by the way,
because right now, I think if that was the number,
I think there'd be eight teams over the salary cap
as we speak. There would be ten teams under the
salary floor as we speak. And it's some of the
teams you just mentioned, but the A's, the Brewers, the Pirates,
the Cardinals, the Twins, the Rockies, the Rays, the White Sox, Cleveland.

Speaker 2 (20:30):
And Miami all would be under this sun.

Speaker 4 (20:32):
Shows you how credit to the Brewers in Cleveland. They're
the only two teams in that group that have success.

Speaker 5 (20:38):
By the way, Cleveland on paper right now, is gonna
spend ninety four million dollars this year, ninety four million dollars,
which is outrageous to me, and they're probably gonna be
a pretty successful team this year.

Speaker 4 (20:48):
Here's NFL quarterbacks that are making over half their payroll.

Speaker 5 (20:51):
So it is, but then you look at the flip
side of it, like, all right, so let's take the bottom.
Miami's gonna pay seventy eight million dollars at least as
of right now projected payroll for this year. Dodgers are
going to pay three hundred and eighty one point five
million dollars in payroll this year. Something needs to change
in Major League Baseball. And I'm not saying that the
salary cap salary floor discussion is necessarily wrong. I am
saying that the players will never go for those numbers,

(21:12):
never ever in a million years, will go for those numbers.

Speaker 4 (21:15):
Right, because God are the days of signing like a
player like Manny Machado, an aging star would never in
a salary cap make what he is making, because now
what Many Machado brings to the city, to the ballpark,
and he is still a star. I'm not, you know,
diminishing Many Machatto. He's still a very talented player in
this league. But there is no way in baseball you're

(21:36):
just playing paying players left and right because they have
name brand and they bring star power to the team
and they drop people to the ballpark. There is no
way that's happening in a salary cap league. And everything
is calculated right now.

Speaker 5 (21:46):
This tweet by John Hayman, I'm positive came directly from
the owners, and so it's calculated. The owners want those
numbers out there as of right now, just like the
owners wanted to make sure that the Tony Clark thing happened.
Now they're trying to weaken each other heading into this,
which is also why Manny Machado and Bryce Harper had
nearly the exact same thing to say on the exact
same day, praising.

Speaker 2 (22:05):
The Dodgers for what they've done for baseball.

Speaker 5 (22:07):
So everything you hear out of the world of Major
League Baseball over the next six months leading up to
December or what are we at nine months leading up
to December is gonna be calculated from both sides. They
both have a lot of really smart people behind them
kind of pushing them in the right direction for this
pr battle that's about to take place, so that fans,
who are the ones who get hurt in this whole thing,
by the way, have to choose a side between the

(22:28):
players and the owners. It's a bad spot for baseball
to put us in Baseball who's coming off a really
good year, who's about to head into another really good year,
is about to shoot themselves as their own foot, which
is fantastic.

Speaker 4 (22:39):
Seven six is the higher floor is way more important
than a higher cap force the other teams I agree
to spend.

Speaker 2 (22:45):
I mean it is back to say, guess what, Miami.
If you can't, you're gonna lose your team.

Speaker 6 (22:48):
Right.

Speaker 4 (22:49):
It's like again, I understand everyone being frustrated with the Dodgers,
and yes, is it frustrating that a team like the
Dodgers who goes out and signs Tanner Scott and then
he's not good at all and blows thirteen saves last
year do face no repercussions whatsoever because they just go
sign on with Diaz of course, but again, at least
the Dodters are trying to win. At least the Potteris

(23:10):
are trying to wait. The Potters are a prettial top
ten team in payroll. It's frustrating six right now. I mean,
it's baseball. Is the only sport that on opening day,
the second first pitch is thrown, you cross off about
ten to twelve teams from ever winning a championship immediately.

Speaker 2 (23:27):
Something needs to change, and change is coming.

Speaker 5 (23:29):
But it's gonna be a bit of a process here,
and you're gonna hear a lot of ugliness out of
both sides, all right. Steve Hartman's weekly chat with us
every week. It's the most camp miss moments on this
show is coming up next. It's San Diego Sports seven
six year listening live on my Heart Radio app.

Speaker 2 (23:42):
But Steve Hartman is here. Hi, Steve, how are you well?

Speaker 6 (23:45):
Fletch. To be honest, they call the other things, but
we just can't repeat them on the air. By the way,
I worked overtime this week, Fletches. You know, Sammy had
me on an extra day this week.

Speaker 5 (23:57):
Yeah, I was sick for a couple of days. As
Sammy loaded the deck we had all our regulars on.
He had coach Kencari, he had you, Alan slee Walk
a couple others.

Speaker 2 (24:05):
I had to call my guy, how'd Sammy do? Leading
the thing?

Speaker 6 (24:08):
Steve, Well, you can't get sick again. That's the problems.
You got to take care of yourself. Man.

Speaker 2 (24:16):
It was just a little chess cold. You know, it
happens to the best of us.

Speaker 5 (24:18):
Steve, even though the whole text line thinks I was
faking it because rich Orberg keeps putting out fake news
out into the world.

Speaker 2 (24:23):
But Steve, how is the week? How's everything going?

Speaker 5 (24:26):
I don't think I got to get your reaction on
Team USA winning in hockey very exciting.

Speaker 6 (24:32):
I mean, I mean, you know, like most people here
on the West Coast, I turned on that I knew
the game was on. I had to work late, you know,
I had late night TV, so I didn't get into
bed untill one o'clock. So you know, I wake up
and I saw basically mid second period on the second
period was insane. I mean, the goltending, which just absolutely

(24:53):
freaking insane. He just kept saying, how is us hanging
on in this game? The only the only problem I have,
certainly not winning the goal. That was great, But I can't. Guys,
and I've taught this before. You know, you're watching the
World Cup final and they have peks to decide it.
I mean three on three overtime for the Olympic gold medal. No, no, no, no,

(25:16):
no no. I mean I understand you like want to
get it over quick, which is obviously you're going to
get it over quick with three on three hockey, but
it's for the Olympic gold. I mean it drives me
nuts because you have you get into Stanley Cup playoff.
They don't go three on three in the Stanley Cup
playoffs and overtime, and that is some of the most

(25:38):
exciting hockey you're ever going to see. So that would
be my only problem.

Speaker 2 (25:41):
Steve.

Speaker 5 (25:42):
I had a couple of Canadians in studio this morning
over on KGB. It was their drink we were doing
on a bar car Friday, and they kept saying, three
on three is not real hockey.

Speaker 2 (25:50):
You sound like a complainer, Steve USA wins. That's that.

Speaker 1 (25:55):
Well.

Speaker 6 (25:56):
I like it, but if they had lost three on three,
we'd be freaking screaming at the time off of our lungs.
So I mean, you know that we got lucky, and
you know, obviously they get we cashed in big time.
But I just don't think it's the same thing with
PK's at World Cup. I mean, come on, I mean,
are you kidding me? I mean, when we're talking about
an event that happens every four years, you got to

(26:17):
go the distance, you got to go, you know, and
grind it out. And that's that's just the way I am.
Call the old school, call me the old grub Nigen,
and I just like it that way.

Speaker 4 (26:26):
Steve, who is the biggest threat to the Dodgers entering
entering the season?

Speaker 6 (26:30):
The Dodgers, I mean, the only threat they have, seriously,
Sammy is is just a rash of injuries. But right
now as they sit here on paper with a healthy
O Tany, a healthy smell, a healthy glass now, a
healthy Yamamoto, healthy Edwin Diaz, Kyle Tucker at it, I
mean seriously, I mean, I would guess I don't even know.

(26:55):
I mean, when you when you look at teams that
spent money, like really spent money. Obviously the Mets spent
money this year. They also gave up Alonzo without even
offering him anything. I guess the Mets. But I mean,
this is a team that absolutely collapsed at the end
of last year. So it's hard to sing a lot anyone.

(27:17):
I would say, if you look over in the American League,
it's a team that was two outs away from beating them,
and that's the Toronto Blue Jays. So but on the
nationally side, with the pillage would be there if the Padres,
the Padres are going to have to get and insane,
get insane seasons either of their big three in the rotation,
I mean all of them. They cannot afford any injuries

(27:40):
for their big three pitchers if they're going to win
ninety ninety five plus games. But again, unless the Dodgers
have an insane amount of injuries, how could they lose
or win less than one hundred to one hundred and
five games. I don't see any other team it's going
to approach that number.

Speaker 2 (27:56):
It is daunting heading into a season.

Speaker 5 (27:57):
That's why Jeff Passon had that whole article about how
so many fan bases just don't feel hope heading into
this year, and then spring training happens and we all
get delusional once again, and we all have hope once again.
Kind of the beauty of spring training in the world
of Major League Baseball. All Right, Steve, I'm gonna say
two words, and I need you to tell me what
those words mean to you.

Speaker 2 (28:16):
Are you ready?

Speaker 6 (28:18):
I'm ready? Magic City, magic City.

Speaker 2 (28:24):
There's a five dollars bet writing on this. So what
do those words mean to you?

Speaker 6 (28:29):
Magic City?

Speaker 1 (28:32):
Well, I wouldn't.

Speaker 2 (28:34):
I mean, it's over.

Speaker 1 (28:36):
I have no idea.

Speaker 6 (28:37):
What I mean. Magic City to me was magic Johnson,
LA was the magic city when the Magic Man was going.
But I mean Orlando magic. I mean, I have no idea.
Why would I know the Magic City? What is this?

Speaker 2 (28:50):
Flesh and I had a bet.

Speaker 4 (28:51):
The Atlanta Hawks are honoring a strip tease establishment in
the Atlanta the Greater Analysts Strip Club.

Speaker 2 (28:58):
That's so much weirder Atlanta area.

Speaker 6 (29:01):
I've never been to a strip club in Atlanta. Now,
I've been to Bond Venus obviously in the Tampa area.
I've been in literally every strip joint in Vegas in LA.
But you can't, I mean in Atlanta's strip joint.

Speaker 3 (29:13):
Now.

Speaker 5 (29:14):
Their world renowned for their chicken wings, Steve, and I'm
not making that up.

Speaker 2 (29:17):
They're lemon pepper wings.

Speaker 6 (29:18):
All of these places are supposedly known for their Chicken Wings.

Speaker 5 (29:23):
Yeah, the Atlanta Hawks are doing a special Magic City Night.
They're honoring them for their their relevance in the world
of hip hop and R and B, as well as
their cultural impact because of the Chicken Wings. So your
thoughts on the NBA team teaming up with the strip club.

Speaker 6 (29:37):
Well, first of all, as a as a man that
really knows strip clubs, we did a promotion years ago,
Philly Billy Warrendell and I for a local strip joint
in San Diego, and at the very light we promoted
it on the air. We will be there. We were
judges at the Pole Olympics. The Pole Olympics. Okay, so

(29:57):
you had the girls that were pole dancers and we
we were going to be judges at the Pole Olympics.
So I'm ready to go, and literally the last second,
Philly Billy calls me and he goes, yeah, she won't
let me go.

Speaker 2 (30:08):
I go.

Speaker 6 (30:08):
Who won't let you go? My wife, She's not gonna
let me go. Really, We've been promoting this on the
air all week. So I called my late great father
in law he was alive at the time, and he said, sure,
I'll come along. So there were five judges. And it
was really a remarkable competition, guys, because there were I
believe there were six girls in the finals, and the

(30:30):
least attractive girl won unanimously. I mean unanimously because the
way she operated the poll. You had to see it
to believe it. Guys. That's all I can say. You
had to see it to believe it. And all the judges,
we all looked at each other say, boom, she's a winner.

Speaker 2 (30:51):
Winner.

Speaker 5 (30:51):
Radio has winner changed man. Steve used to get picked
up in a limo. He was doing promotions with strip clubs. Wait,
what's going on? In twenty six.

Speaker 6 (31:00):
We even had this, guys. We even did a We
did a station softball game where we had all of
our on air people behind the scenes people going up
against a strippers in a charity softball game.

Speaker 2 (31:17):
Did he was.

Speaker 6 (31:18):
Attended by our fans. I don't remember the final score.
I do remember wearing jeans. It was actually a fairly
chilly day and I'm wearing jeans and one of the
stripperies pulled out a black marker and on the inside
of my jeans wrote I was here, and then had

(31:38):
an arrow pointing up and it was like, wow, okay,
I can't use these seans anymore.

Speaker 5 (31:44):
But yeah, all congratulations Steve. Sammy will not ask this question,
so I will. Why are the Lakers so future these days?

Speaker 6 (31:53):
I almost feel like it's by design now. I mean, guys, look,
as I said last time, the Guggenheim actually talk to
Sammy about this during the week. The Guggenheim group is
ready to clean house, you know, Bye bye Lebron Bye bye.
I mean it could be even bye by Austin Reeves
unless he comes at the number they want. If he
wants more. Hey, we wish all the best, good luck.

(32:15):
There's one safe guy, Luka Doncic. But this organization is
going to be absolutely gutted at the end of this
year and it's going to be a do over and
it's going to take a little while. But you've got
to put faith in Guggenheim because they know how to
put together an organization and winning organization. I know the
restrictions are different with a salary cap in the NBA,

(32:35):
but they got some geniuses they can figure it out.
So I almost feel like at this point, and the
Lakers don't even have a first round pick, so they're
putting no stock in this season. They're going to limp
into the playoffs. At the rate they're going, they might
be in the playing round, quick elimination, Bye Bye Lebron
And it's a complete doover in the front office, a

(32:55):
doover on the court. I think they'll keep Reddick. I
think they're okay with Reddick, But outside of that man
he and Luca. I mean, it could be an entirely
different roster that the Lakers look at next season.

Speaker 4 (33:07):
See so, who do you have going to the finals,
because it feels like everyone's picking the Spurs all of
a sudden to beat Oklahoma City because of the regular
season matchups. Do you think that happens in the postseason
or do you think this is kind of Oklahoma City's
to lose.

Speaker 6 (33:22):
That's a good question. I mean, look on paper, yes,
San Antonio obviously has been able to beat them head
to head. I wouldn't even count on Denver at this
point because they do have guys that have proven they
can get it down down the stretch in the West.
But I don't know is it even gonna matter? I mean, guys, JD.
Bickerstaff has done one of the most remarkable coaching jobson

(33:43):
history in Detroit This is not all that different. Number
roster that won fourteen games a couple of years ago,
and what he has been able to do in two
years was essentially the same roster. And now they have
the best record in the NBA. Now they've taken a
because obviously some key injuries on the East, but I
mean they have been They beat Oklahoma City. I mean,

(34:06):
I'm telling you right now, look out for the Detroit Pistons.
The bigger staff has done an unbelievable job the roster.
Look at the roster two years ago, you see a
lot of the same guys that they have right now.
That team won fourteen games. This team could win sixty.
I mean, it's unbelievable.

Speaker 2 (34:23):
All right, Steve, before we get you out of here,
you have any big weekend plans.

Speaker 6 (34:27):
Well, I have a full weekend of television. My station
was big time in the news this week. I don't know,
oh yeah, yeah it was. I haven't talked well, I
have talked to people, but this was my first time
back at the station tonight since so I'm going to
get you know, sort of the dirt of what happened.
Not that I haven't been blindsided myself. You remember that

(34:49):
don't you, Fltch, I remember me being sort of you know,
back in the day. Yeah, I guess part of it, Steve,
it's it's amazing. Well, and Sammy, I tell you, no one,
no one was with us to more blind sides than Fletch.
I mean he saw it all.

Speaker 5 (35:10):
I went back to back to back years at one
point seeing blind sides. In fact, like pretty much everyone
who I've ever been with, who sat right where I'm
sitting right now, has been blindsided.

Speaker 2 (35:18):
So yeah, it happens.

Speaker 6 (35:19):
You know, there was a theory about Fletch's presence on
the morning show that it maybe he was a party
to the fact that it was just like a revolving
door of people. And they even they didn't even name
the show. I mean that was that was the best part.
No name of the show. Our show was seen the
listed on the stage of website for a while.

Speaker 5 (35:39):
So that's my favorite run of radio Steve, was that
like six months, where was you, me and Ernie in
the morning and no one really telling us what was
going on, and we just did a show every day.
It was so much fun.

Speaker 6 (35:51):
It was it wasn't even and it wasn't even on
the website. It just it didn't even have us. I mean,
it was like, you know, and we just we just
you know, until they probably decided to put Rich on
the morning show at least until they could get rid
of me. So yeah, I mean those are the days.
But I mean, guys, you know what, it's show business.
And all I can say is, if you choose to

(36:12):
be in this industry, you got to roll with the punches.
You know, you guys are red hot right now. You
don't have to worry about when you're red hot. You know,
there comes times when you, hey, you're at the top
of the mountain and all of a sudden you're showing
the door, and then the question is how long do
you want to put up with this? And so, you know,
you hear about actors getting rejected. It is the same
thing with people on the air, with your radio guy,

(36:33):
TV guy. It's all part of the business. But if
you love what you do, you know, you just hang
in there and other opportunities always seem to pop up.
So but you guys don't have to worry about that.
You're in a prime right now. You are kicking ass.
And I am so happy. I gain a lot of
mileage out of this Friday that I spend with you, guys,
I get a lot of street cred. It's working for.

Speaker 2 (36:56):
Me the Gangster and Steve Harman OJI appreciate you going.
We'll talk to you next week.

Speaker 6 (37:01):
Oh, I love you guys, Love.

Speaker 2 (37:02):
You too, Steve Harbin, one of the best to ever
do it. Man.

Speaker 5 (37:05):
It's San Diego Sports seven sixty. We got some bastexs
basketball tickets.

Speaker 2 (37:08):
For you right now.

Speaker 5 (37:09):
They got UNLV next Friday at Viejas Arena. It's the
regular season finale. It's senior night. You want to be there.
Call eight seven seven seven sixty seven four seven sixty Sammy,
what number caller?

Speaker 2 (37:20):
See number eight? Oh, number eight. You're going to the
game at San Diego Sports seven sixty. You're listening live
on my heart radio app.

Speaker 5 (37:26):
Nadian's crying about losing three on three hockey is insane.
They had McKinnon, Celebrini and McDavid on the ice well
at the same time and could not win an over.

Speaker 4 (37:33):
Time at sixty one five. Fantastic point. If anyone should
have complained about three on three hockey because the strength
of the US team was on defense and their defensemen,
it should be the US because three on three hockey highlights,
more individual play and speed. They have two of the
best skaters in Celebrinian and McDavid in all of hockey,
and they still lost.

Speaker 2 (37:54):
So so I've been wearing the hat all day.

Speaker 5 (37:56):
But this Coconut Cowboy, which is the vodka brand that
we had in studio this week for bark Hard Friday.

Speaker 2 (38:01):
Really really nice people.

Speaker 5 (38:02):
But it took about an hour for them to divulge
that they were from Canada. And it was really as
soon as the guy opened up his voice or started talking,
I was like, oh, yeah, Canadian.

Speaker 2 (38:11):
I marked that from a mile away, but it took
a while.

Speaker 5 (38:14):
As soon as the words we are Canadian came out
of their mouth, I played the bald eagle screech on
the soundboard. I started chanting USA, and we're really rubbing
it in their faces. And they were so damn polite
about it. They couldn't even just fired back. And these
are classy people. They're too classy, They're too nice. But sorry,

(38:35):
sorry we got in your way there.

Speaker 2 (38:36):
They actually sound like that this money what the guy did.

Speaker 5 (38:39):
Yeah, the girl did it, but the guy ye had
a think Canadian accent.

Speaker 4 (38:43):
Dude, I want to meet like a Canadian who's like
just a complete.

Speaker 2 (38:48):
I know what you're saying. Yeah, I know a few.

Speaker 4 (38:50):
Okay, christ Everyone's always says Canadians is so nice, and
every Canadian i'd met, he's been very pleasant, very polite.

Speaker 5 (38:55):
My brother lived in Canada for about six years. He
was only like two hours north of the Wyoming border.
It's a little town called Lethbridge. But he played basketball there.
Then he coached basketball there. Okay, and his group of
friends are a some of the funniest people you'll ever
meet in your life. And they have great hearts, but
they are also total asses, and they are degenerates, and.

Speaker 4 (39:17):
They Canada get annoyed like you're you're supposed to be,
like people think that you're supposed to be.

Speaker 2 (39:21):
It's just polite personal time. It's like you don't have.

Speaker 5 (39:23):
They spend the majority of their time making fun of Americans.
Like that is just if you had to entertain a
bunch of Canadians for a day, just crack one American
joke and then they just go.

Speaker 4 (39:33):
I I when I lived in Seattle, we went to
go visit Vancouver for like a weekend.

Speaker 5 (39:36):
When you were eighteen because you could start drinking earlier
there actually.

Speaker 4 (39:41):
No, it was before then, and I was very disappointed
because I went to watch I wanted to watch some
NBA basketball and they didn't have the cable service up there.
So it was not a great weekend for me. But
this is someone. We had a great dinner. The waitress
was very nice and then she's like, they're like, where
are you from. We're like, oh, from you know, La originally,
but San Diego and San Diego they're like, oh, you're
from the other side.

Speaker 2 (40:02):
I go the other side? The hell does that mean?
Canada is a cool place?

Speaker 5 (40:06):
I know I make fun of it a lot, but
I actually really really like Canada.

Speaker 2 (40:09):
I love Canada.

Speaker 5 (40:10):
It's a very cool place and it's our hat so
we appreciate them. I love hats. All right, Samy, you're
going to see Scream seven tonight?

Speaker 2 (40:16):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (40:18):
Is anyone from the original cast still in? That's Campbell's
in it, Cambles still cooking? Yeah, she she missed the
last one, but she's back in it. I think it's
her and her daughter. Her daughter.

Speaker 2 (40:28):
What's the ghost Faces coming after? Wow?

Speaker 5 (40:31):
Well, can't wait for that report. I don't think I've
seen a single Scream movie. I'm being completely first off.
The first Scream is a fantastic film, doesn't there's no spot.

Speaker 2 (40:40):
It's okay. Drew Barrymore dies, she does like right away. Right.

Speaker 4 (40:42):
It was the first movie ever that they marketed Drew
Barrymore as the main star, like she was the star
of the movie. And they kill her in the first
ten minutes. It's nineteen ninety six, so these aren't spoilers.
They killed in the first ten minutes and then people
are like, what the hell has happened?

Speaker 5 (40:56):
Well, good luck with Scream seven tonight. Can't wait for
your one day all right? Jay Riff is coming up next.
He's filling in for John Schaeffer. Stay tuned at San
Diego Sports seven sixty.

Speaker 2 (41:04):
Thank you for the week. Everybody appreciate you.
