Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome and Ben Fletcher, that's Sammy Long. Not like it
got a hair. The frenzy continues in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
The US does it again at the World Baseball Classic.
Brian Tucker and the Ashtecs continue to get ready for
the Mountain West curn Ement.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
Then we will start from the beginning.
Speaker 3 (00:19):
Give me Santa Clara plus four and a half against
Saint Mary's in a WCC.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
That's how it starts.
Speaker 4 (00:24):
Give me the Knicks minus two and a half against
the Clippers.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
You always have such horrible idea.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
And then give me the Nuggets plus six and a half.
Take it on the thutter in openma Cey.
Speaker 1 (00:33):
You figured it out, didn't you. You cracked the code.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Now we go to the San Diego Sports seven sixty
studios to get into the flex zone.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
Let's get it going on on Tuesday. What's going on, everybody?
Ben Fletcher, Sammy Long with you til two o'clock today,
John Schaeffer and Sammy Long will take over. Then you're
filling in for Brent today.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
Yeah, you will hear my voice for the next six hours.
Speaker 4 (00:58):
Ladies and gentlemen.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Especially, I just got out of a meeting, Samy. We
didn't want to advertise that we didn't want like the
next six hours to you know, get hurt by the
fact that you're gonna hear Sammy for the next six years.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
Some people may like that, some people may not, but
you know what, you're gonna have to deal with it.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
Deal with it. But yeah, John is gonna be doing
his show today with Sammy long running the board not
the mastery of Brent Sperry, So please forgive any problems
that happen from two to six today.
Speaker 4 (01:22):
I've learned from my protege Brent.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
We got a big show today. Kevin Acy is going
to be joining us coming up at twelve thirty. We
may have a surprise guest later in the one o'clock
hour in studio. We'll see if the stars align on that.
We have a four pack of tickets for you to
go to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park get up
close and personal with the brand new Elephant Valley where
I will actually be. Tomorrow morning, we're doing bigger Rich
TDM fletched live from Elephant Valley doing a morning show
(01:45):
with an elephant as our co host. Can't wait for that,
but it is San Diego Sports seven to sixty we'll
talk about text today. We'll talk a lot of padres
today with keV. We are gonna start with the NFL
because that has taken over the world over the last
twenty four to forty eight hours, with free agency open up,
the legal tampering window opening up, and I just want
to start off by saying this, Sammy, you had it
(02:05):
in your update. Geno Smith returns after being drafted by
the New York Jets to the New York Jets. Gino
Smith was a journeyman. He was a bust, he was
long forgotten about, popped up in Seattle, played pretty well
for a couple of years. I would say, kind of
guided the Seattle Seahawks through not a rebuild but a retool.
And guess what, the Seahawks are better off because of it.
(02:25):
They ended up in the Super Bowl. They ended up
winning the Super Bowl this past season. And I don't
think they can do that without Geno Smith keeping them
in the conversation and having them avoid a total rebuild.
While he was there. Gino Smith goes to the Raiders,
is colossally awful and terrible with the Raiders and gets
them the number one overall pick. So Gino Smith wildly
powerful man in the world of football. But I will
(02:47):
say this for the New York Jets, what the hell
are you doing? Because the New York Jets, in their
same building, in their same stadium, can look at the
locker room of the other team that plays there, the
New York Giants, and see young quarterb, young running back,
young wide receiver, young defensive line who all have a
lot of promise, and I think for the first time
since Eli Manning was there, people are excited about the
(03:09):
future of the New York Giants. So what do the
Jets do. They bring in Geno Smith to be the
quarterback next year, pretty much ensuring that they're gonna do
a little bit of a rebuild themselves, pretty much ensuring
that the Jets are gonna have a high draft pick
next year. But how can you not get a little
more creative than Geno Smith? This seems like such a
miss to me for the New York Jets. I can't
believe this is where they decided to go. They gave
(03:31):
up what seventh round pick to get him. I don't
really understand what's going on with Geno Smith and the Jets,
But congratulations, you got your QB.
Speaker 4 (03:39):
One I'm gonna disagree with you.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
Please, I think, Geno Smith, although everything you said is valid,
and are the Jets gonna be terrible this year?
Speaker 4 (03:46):
One million percent?
Speaker 1 (03:47):
How does the Jets fan base feel about this? Like
they're neighbors with the Giants fan base?
Speaker 3 (03:53):
I think if I'm a Jets fan, and please Texas
seven zero four to seven zero, start your message with
team if you happen to blee Green. But if I'm
the Jets, you're used to sucking for years. And my
thing is this, Although it's going to be a difficult
season in New York, and yes to your point about
(04:13):
the Giants being there in the Giants kind of being
a sexy sleeper pick team this year could have some success,
John Harbaugh, there's a lot of success or a lot
of excitement around the New York Giants. It's going to
hurt when they're out shining the Jets once again in
their home city. But if you're the Jets signing it
obviously not signing Aaron Rodgers they.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
Used to have him.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
Kyler Murray to one of these guys that will win
you enough games, Gino Smith, they're basically pulling an NBA
tank job.
Speaker 4 (04:42):
This is what this is.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
Do you know next year, arch maning out of Texas
figures to be in the conversation for the number one pick,
Dante mourad Oregon, Lenoris Sellers out of South Carolina, and
Myava from USC You're gonna have your pick of the
litter at quarterback next year. And as we've seen this league,
if you don't have a quarterback, you're just you're not
gonna win. It's not gonna happen. You have the best
roster there is. If you don't have a big time quarterback,
(05:04):
you're not gonna win in big moments. And although, yeah,
if I'm a Jets fan today and I gotta watch
a season at Gino Smith and my two thrilled, no,
But at the same time, if the Jets are sitting
here with the number one pick next year, with the
ability and supposedly a stack quarterback class, that's the better
move than winning six games with Kyler Murray or a
team or someone or Malik Willis had they signed him.
(05:27):
And then yet you're not picking at the top of
the draft, but you're still not a successful team.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
Right, But you probably could have done that without Geno Smith.
This is just admitting full circle. You were wrong all
those years ago, and you're probably wrong once again here today.
I don't fully understand the move. I think Geno Smith
could have gone to a lot of places and it
would have made more sense. He could have gone and
been in backup somewhere and actually would have been probably
qualified as one of the better backups in football. But
for this to come down today, I don't really get
(05:51):
it from the Jets point of view, and I do
think you're sending a pretty bad message to your fan base, who,
like Sammy said, you're used to sucking New York Jets fans.
And I'm sorry, but it's gonna happen once again here,
and it's gonna happen with a quarterback that at one
point you staked your future on. That's just gotta be
a tough pill to swallow. All Right, It is San
Diego Sports seven sixty. Those Elephant Valley tickets are coming
up in just a little bit. How about this from
(06:11):
the eight five eight, texting into the show early. Thanks
again for the BMP Perrybot tickets. Got to see Novak
play singles and doubles, Tiafo play doubles and singles, and
alcraz and Medvedev all play Fritz blew my parlay. But
I've made bank off the rinky upset. We get in
some ATP on long shots today, Sammy first off, beautiful
text is a great text.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
I have been locked in the Perry Boss. There will
be some perrybus open some tennis talk. Do you pronounce
the s Perry PERRYBA. Yeah, there's no S.
Speaker 4 (06:41):
You're right, there's no.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
There is an S. I just don't think you pronounce it.
I think it's just Perry BA.
Speaker 4 (06:45):
I Uh, there will be some.
Speaker 3 (06:46):
We're gonna have some NBA, little college basketball and a
little little up PERIBA open.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Before we get to the Big three. Do you want
to let everybody know about long shots? You were very
animated about this before the show.
Speaker 4 (06:56):
Okay, so this is.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
Back to back games that the Knicks screwed it up.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
The Knicks very frustrating because if you followed along with
long shots. Yesterday the Nuggets lost but kept it close.
Shake Gildas, Alexander hit a big time three last night.
Speaker 1 (07:10):
Over the weekend, you had the Knicks Lakers going under
and it went over.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
And it went over, and I then Santa Clara called
the money line upset over Saint Mary's.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
Maybe your best pick ever on long Shots.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
I was very impressed with that. Santa Clara's playing really
good basketball right now. Got a fun matchup against the
Zags tonight, and Zaga see if they can win the WCC.
Speaker 4 (07:29):
And those damn Nicks. I mean, I'm.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
Sorry, I thought you would have a little heart coming
off the Lakers kind of pounding you on Sunday and
to let the Clippers and Benedict Mathern and Kawhi Leonard
and Darius Carland do whatever the hell they wanted to
last night on primetime. Embarrassing from the Knicks. And the
Knicks are The Knicks are on Sammy's hit list right now?
Speaker 1 (07:48):
Blacklist, blacklist. They're done. Never including the Knicks on another
long Shots ever? Again, who do they join nem Hard
and Nembard.
Speaker 3 (07:56):
Carnthy Town's already there, Yeah, Carnothy Town has already been there.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
I think we need to put Carlos Alcarez on it. No, No,
I don't think you've ever won a line up the
head Carlos Alcarez.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
Carlos at the French Open had some success for us.
Carlos is not on the list yet.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
I don't know all right, Well, we'll get to the
Big three long shots coming up at twelve forty five.
Stay tuned for that that four packet tickets to the
helfan Valley, excited to give those away. Those have been
hot tickets all week long. Sammy, let's get to the
Big three. Go ahead, smash it, cure looked.
Speaker 4 (08:20):
Freak is here.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Ready to go back to the office and knock the
socks off your friends, I mean co workers each time
for the top stories of the day, A Big three three.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
Text line is open seven zero four seven zero. Start
your message with Team YouTube I believe is live. Are
we live on YouTube? Yes?
Speaker 5 (08:39):
We are?
Speaker 1 (08:39):
Uh download YouTube, bap whatever on your smart fridge or
wherever you want to watch us in search San Diego
Sports seven sixty drop a comment there. We'd love to
hear from you on all our different platforms. Sammy, where
would you like to start two attack?
Speaker 3 (08:51):
I by loa broke at the end of our show yesterday,
heading to Atlanta and figure to compete with Michael Pennick
Junior for the starting job eighty. You like the move
into will to be the starter on opening day?
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Logistically, I like the move because you don't have to
change everything around. Because it's left handed quarterback to left
handed quarterback. Whoever wins the battle to be the starter,
whoever loses the battle to become the backup, things become
a little bit easier. I hate the move because of
this and this only. What is that telling Michael Pennocks
And maybe maybe the Falcons don't think a whole lot
about Michael Pennocks and Kevin Stefanski didn't draft him. So
Kevin Stefanski's coming in with a brand new slate. He
(09:25):
might want multiple options at the quarterback position heading into
the year, But Michael Penix is coming off a season
that I would not qualify as good with some promising moments.
I think that's as nice as you could be about
Michael Pennix. But I do think with the athleticism that
he has, with the arm that he has, Michael Penix
has what it takes to be an NFL quarterback. All
this is doing is playing mind games with Michael Penix now,
(09:46):
even if it's inadvertent, even if Kevin Stefanski said, I
want to make sure that we get somebody who has
started a lot of football games in here, just in
case he needs to be the starter, and Michael Penix
doesn't have what it takes. You could have done that
with the guy who was already in your building, Kirk Couzin,
the guy whom Michael Pennigs was already comfortable with. I
don't see too as much of an upgrade over Kirk Cousins.
I really don't, so unless you are convinced that Tua
(10:08):
could come in and take the starting job, which he
very well may be able to do. I don't love
this move at all for the Falcons. I think this
is causing unnecessary issues with Michael Pennix.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
I don't understand this because the only quarterback I could
have seen you bringing in was Kyler Murray.
Speaker 1 (10:24):
Right to be a starter, to be a starter.
Speaker 3 (10:26):
And Kyler Murray would have been like, listen, if Kyler
beats him outain camp, it's Kyler's job. Because I think
Kyler is the only guy that coming into free agency.
Speaker 4 (10:35):
I'll take Malik.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
Willis out of it because we'll get to him a
little bit later. I actually don't hate that signing, but
Kyler Murray was the only guy who has been in
the league for a while has been a starter that,
in my opinion, could have a second act to their
career because Kyler Murray, although the Cardinals, you know, some
of it's his fault, they couldn't always outfit him with
the best, you know, weapons around him. And with the Cardinals,
(10:57):
it just feels like that team was you know, a
little lost for for some times out and now he's
going if you was if he was to go to Atlanta,
if you're talking about Drake London, beach On Robinson, Kyle Pitts,
I mean, you got weapons everywhere. I think Kyler Murray
could have had a big resurrection, But to go from
Penix to uh A just feels like you're getting a
more injury prone version of Michael Pennix with a smaller arm.
Speaker 4 (11:21):
I genuinely don't understand it.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
And now you're gonna have a whole conversation all off
season about who's the quarterback in Atlanta. This felt like
a rush move to me, and I don't get it.
If I'm Kevin Stefanski, I thought it's way way too
much of an.
Speaker 4 (11:32):
Overpay for that.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
All right, who next?
Speaker 4 (11:35):
All Right?
Speaker 3 (11:35):
If the Aztecs win three straight, let's just live in
a fantasyland.
Speaker 4 (11:40):
So they do.
Speaker 3 (11:40):
So they win three straight and make March madness. Will
this be looked at as a successful season.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
That's a really good question. I don't think I've given
myself time to really think about that. I can absolutely
see them winning three straight. I could see pretty much
anybody in the Mountain West Tournament winning three straight. Once
we get to the quarterfinal round, I would say yes, actually,
because this team has had to go through quite a
bit of adversity. Obviously, Mcgoongweth hasn't had the season you
thought he'd have. That's the reigning Mountain West Freshman of
(12:09):
the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. If he
played the season last year that he played this year,
he would not have gotten either of those awards, even
when he was healthy. Mcgooon Gweth hasn't had the same
impact that he had a year ago, and you were
expecting a pretty big jump from him. I think Miles Byrd, largely,
for the most part, stayed the same. He had some
flashes this year where he was clearly the best player
on the court, but he was the preseason Mountain West
(12:30):
Player of the Year. He hasn't nearly lived up to
what that should be. Restix and Waters, I think has
given you everything he possibly could coming off a year
where he didn't play basketball. I think Reese has had
a good season, not great. BJ Davis has blown you
out of the water with the expectations for him coming
into this year. However, I don't think anything ever jelled
the way we thought it would with this team, where
there's a ton of talent on it, but nothing is
(12:51):
gelled all the way. If this team can overcome what
they've gone through this year and get into March Madness,
I kind of think you have to qualify that as
a win and a successful sea. No, the Sweet sixteen
talk that was happening in the offseason, I think we
all found out pretty early on that that probably wasn't
going to be this team. That's not to say it's
still campy, right, That's why March is kind of special.
So they go on a little bit of a run here, Yeah,
(13:11):
it's a success.
Speaker 4 (13:14):
It's tough.
Speaker 3 (13:15):
I think anything shorter than making March Madniss definitely cannot
be cataraupicalized as a successful season. If they make it
and they lose in the first round, I'm not going
to see here and say it's successful season. I think
they will have ended at least on the right track
and that they kind of turned it around and made
up a little bit for such a sluggish start to
(13:36):
the year with the first few weeks and that week
out in Vegas, the loss to Troy, you know, the
week before that.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
By the way, Troy's in the NCAA two. Yeah, goodness,
gracious they so.
Speaker 5 (13:46):
No.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
I think it's a successful season for the Assics as
of right now is they make the tournament and they
win a game. If they do that, considering how they
started this season, I'm gonna give them the benefit of doubt.
Even though you're going out in the round.
Speaker 4 (13:57):
Of thirty two.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
I go they You know, they don't a lot of
injury this year. They were able to kind of rally.
They finally had to hold team back together the last
couple of weeks of the season and got there. But
you have to make March Madness. If they don't make
March Madness, I'm sorry. With the amount of talent they
have on this team, because if there's a I mean,
Miles Bird was getting looked at for the NBA McGoo
Gwath was Michigan, one of the best teams in the country,
(14:19):
was offering him a huge nil deal I mean, there
were a lot of these players were really sought after
resticks and waters, and to not make the tournament with
this talent and of a roster certainly cannot be a
successful season.
Speaker 4 (14:29):
But they get a week to change that, I would agree, and.
Speaker 1 (14:31):
I think Dutch would say the exact same thing.
Speaker 4 (14:32):
Yeah, And I.
Speaker 1 (14:33):
Also think a lot depends on how it all happens, right, Right,
you could have an absolute barn burner of a game
against Grand Canyon in the final of the Mountain West
Tournament that doesn't go your way at the end, in
that stinks, but it's not good enough, right because you
didn't get to the n Cuba Tournament. If you get
to the first round in San Diego State plays an
incredible game against the team where obviously they'll be dog
because they're going to be playing a favorite. If they
(14:54):
do get to the NCUBLEA Tournament and they play an
awesome game and it comes down to the final whistle
and they lose by two, I have a hard time
not calling it a successful season.
Speaker 3 (15:03):
It is tricky, but I think it's a It's a
good thing that the expectations are hot.
Speaker 1 (15:07):
Sure, absolutely, that's the show program has grown. Is just
at the time I've lived in San Diego. It is
a completely different situation going into every Aztecs basketball season
than it was.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
Right I remember, right when I first kind of a
similar time moved San Diego. I remember, if the Assets
made the tournament, it was a really big deal. And
now that's that's the standard, that's the baseline, which is
a good thing, and people need to look at it
like that. All right, let's head of the WBC. Now,
So the US get a win yesterday in Mexico. Drama, drama,
good game. Did you see this Randy and Roseina thing after?
Speaker 5 (15:39):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (15:39):
Dude, Okay, So for those who haven't seen this little backstory,
Randy rose Arena and cal Rally obviously played together on
the Seattle Mariners. Cal Raley did not give Randy rose
Arena a handshake after the game.
Speaker 1 (15:53):
This is actually like four years old now, because the
same thing happened with Randy a rose Arena and Will Smith.
Oh really at the WBC and Will Smith did not
give him a handshake when they were at the plate.
Speaker 3 (16:05):
So a rose a Raina in Spanish says I said
about Rally, quote, he has to thank God that he
has nice parents and is well educated. Then he told
him in Mexican slang, apparently he should quote f off
and go to hell. This is his teammate. This is
who he has to go play report to a week
(16:25):
from now about cal Raley kind of spurning him at
the plate and not giving him a handshake. Where do
you fall on the Randy or Rosarna cal Raley beef?
Speaker 1 (16:34):
So we have learned through a day of reporting now
Randya Rosorina is a little bit of a jokester, and
some of these comments may have been a little tongue
in cheek, and I think that part of it is
like Randi of Rosorena is close with cal Rawley's family.
His mom came up to him at the hotel, give
him a big hug, talked about how proud they were
of him. I do think because Randy Rosina said, I'm
(16:55):
gonna tell him four different languages and then he ripped
off Cuban, Spanish, English, other language basically to go f
himself and shove it, there's a sixty percent chance he
was joking, which I think is what where people are
kind of landing on it now if he wasn't, I
kind of love this from both sides.
Speaker 5 (17:13):
Like I do.
Speaker 1 (17:13):
Yeah, Cal Rowley's point of view, He's like, dude, yeah,
we are teammates with the Mariners, and I'll love you
and respect you when we're there. But right now, like
Benji Gills said some pretty bad stuff about Team Usa,
tem Usa in Team Mexico is supposed to be one
of the bigger rivalries in this entire World Baseball Classic.
This is a close game, by the way, and there's
no guarantee that either way is gonna win. Sometimes he
(17:34):
got a nut up or shut up, man. I think
that's what Cal Rawly did. I'll tell you I hate
it in baseball. And Eric Cosmer used to be the
worst at this, standing on first base and all of
a sudden you're having a conversation and smiling with the
guy on first base on the other team.
Speaker 4 (17:46):
Screw that.
Speaker 3 (17:47):
It's hurt baseball, It's hurt basketball. It's basically hurt every
sport besides football.
Speaker 1 (17:51):
I hated Fernando Tazis Junior going on Mookie Betts's podcast.
Speaker 3 (17:54):
Right, it's it's football because of the physicality of the
sport creates anchorrent Russian because someone gets hit too hard
and then all of a sudden you're it is a
violent sport inherently baseball. There's so much standing around, and
basketball has become a lot more finesse to where guys
are working out in the offseason together and their friends.
And I'm not saying the guy shouldn't be friends or
(18:14):
chopping up with people, but Dodger and Pottery fans hate
each other. And right when you see Tatis and Mookie
just kicking it like they're.
Speaker 1 (18:20):
Best friends in the middle of a series.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
In the middle of a series, you start to go, Okay,
it's odd when you see guys in the NBA exchanging
jerseys after heated Celtics Lakers, one of the most iconic
rivalries in sports, and everyone's exchanging jerseys after it kind
of sets an odd precedent. I'll take you back before
we get out of here to the Olympics with Kobe.
Everyone tells that story. Kobe and Powell play.
Speaker 1 (18:42):
Together, ran through his chest.
Speaker 3 (18:44):
He said, I know the play they're gonna run and
I'm running right through his chest and Bosh and Lebron
everyone was like, you're not gonna do that, that's your teammate,
puts him on the ground, says, f him, get up.
We don't play on the same team right now. Relating
this back to WBC, I love him cal rally. They're
not teammates. They're not teammates right now, They'll be teamate
in two weeks. Right now, you play for USA, you
play for Mexico. I liked that there's a little drama
(19:04):
to this and that has sold a little bit of
the WBC. For me is that you get this the
schoobl story. There's been a lot back and forth last though.
Speaker 1 (19:13):
It was the first time I got invested in the WBC, and.
Speaker 3 (19:15):
It felt like the teams really did not like each other.
And that's fun, and.
Speaker 1 (19:19):
That's place Bobby wit Junior was making a shortstop.
Speaker 4 (19:21):
My god, he's unbelievable.
Speaker 1 (19:22):
He had two in a row last night that were
like show stopping Blaze. I don't know that there's a
better shortstop right now defensively in the league. All right,
good stuff there, Sammy Big three. In the books San
Diego Sports seven sixty. Those Elephant Valley tickets are coming
up very soon. Kevin Acy coming up in ten minutes.
Will take a quick break and get a little bit
deeper on those Aztecs coming up next to San Diego
Sports seven sixty live on Myheart Radio app. Well, we'll
talk to keV about what all that means and see
(19:44):
if we could read between the lines a little bit
with what he lets us know. But Joe Muscove getting
some extra rest, I do think that is actually to
be expected, and no arm fatigue mentions in there. It
is quite literally extra rest because he's coming back off
of missing a year due to Tommy John. So we'll
get into all that with keV coming up in just
a little bit here on San Diego Sports seven sixty.
But we all have homework tomorrow night, and I think
(20:06):
the homework is to sit down and watch closely to
the Colorado State Presno State game, because whoever wins that
game is going to be moving on to face the Aztecs.
And I do think San Diego State has an opportunity
here to sort of wipe away a lot of what
was on the dryer race marker from this season. We
could talk all we want about the Troy loss, it's
in the past.
Speaker 5 (20:24):
Now.
Speaker 1 (20:24):
We could talk all we want about Michigan and Baylor
in Vegas, but it's all in the past. Now. We
can talk all we want about BJ Davis and the
phantom foul call at Grand Canyon or the no that
was sorry that was at Utah State Canyon. Okay, now,
I think the phantom fouls at Utah State, and I
think San Diego State got fouled at Grand Canyon. I
can't remember. There are lots of last second calls this
(20:46):
year that went against the Aztecs, and if we want
to talk about it, the Boise State triple overtime game,
there was a lot of calls that were as techs way,
But we could talk about all of that. Ultimately, it
doesn't matter. What does matter is the next three games
for San Diego State, and if they go three and zero,
we could be right back in the position we thought
they were going to be in at the start of
the year and can sort of wipe away a lot
of the disappointment from this season. So for the Aztecs,
(21:08):
they got a pretty tough draw in the first round.
Colorado State might be playing the best basketball if anyone
in the Mountain West leading up to their final regular
season game against Boise State, which they lost. But this
is a pretty brutal draw for the Essex and they
have a good opportunity to shut a lot of people
up right away.
Speaker 3 (21:22):
I'm curious how these three days play out because the
Aztecs have a rest advantage in that they played on
Friday and the off play till Thursdays. That's nice six
days off there where they're able to literally kind of
get off their feet because it's a three day tournament
or the three games that they have to win to
win the tournament.
Speaker 4 (21:39):
It's kind of a marathon, not a sprint.
Speaker 3 (21:41):
And the turnaround, the Aztecs will be playing the night
game on Friday night if they're able to win on Thursday.
I know we're kind of getting ahead of ourselves, but
if they get there, they're playing the night game on
Friday night, and then they play the Mountain West Conference
championship game is midday on Saturdays.
Speaker 1 (21:54):
You could argue the two seed is much worse to
have than the four seed in the Mountain West tournament,
which is a little crazy, but it's true.
Speaker 3 (22:01):
Yeah, Which so it's really about kind of a war
of attrition and I don't hate the Aztecs straw to
plus to your point, Colorado State has been playing some
of the best basketball of anyone in the mount West.
At least you kind of look at Grand Canyon on
the other side of the bracket. That's a team that,
if we're just going off what we've seen so far
this year, not a great matchup for the as Techs,
(22:23):
considering they got up fourteen in that matchup at home
for Grand Canyon, and then they beat the Astex by
ten at Biejas. It's nice that Utah State and them
would have to play each other on the other side,
Like I feel like the Aztecs will be favorites in
a lot of these games. It really just comes down
to when you're playing over three straight days, a can
if it's Utah State, if it's whoever it is, if
(22:44):
it's if it's the Aztecs New Mexico, what team can
get a blowout in one of these games to give
some of their guys some rest always kind of plays
big in a tournament, and this is where the Aztec's depth.
The fact that they play eleven guys, which has been
heavily criticized throughout the season.
Speaker 4 (22:59):
I criticize it.
Speaker 3 (23:00):
I thought they should shorten the rotation, but over a
tournament like this where you're playing back to back to back,
the fact that they do play eleven dudes, this is
where the depth might kind of add to the as text,
which is something that a lot of other teams in
the Mount West simply don't have the ability to go.
Speaker 4 (23:16):
Eleven guys deep.
Speaker 1 (23:17):
Looking forward to it get started. Tomorrow night. Colorado State
will be playing Fresno State, and then if Colorado State wins,
which we assume they do, it'll be San Diego State
Colorado State on Thursday. All that will be here on
San Diego Sports seven sixty. What do you got?
Speaker 3 (23:28):
Sixty one nine is calling me out. I recognize this
right as I said it arm Fatigue Eagles, Tommy John
not an ACL surgery.
Speaker 4 (23:34):
Yeah, I know.
Speaker 1 (23:35):
I did hear you say ACL and I just blew
right past it.
Speaker 3 (23:37):
Yeah, I said it, and I was like, We're just
gonna move on. Probably no one heard it, and people
did hear it. Yeah, I signed wanted to make sure
I knew it well.
Speaker 1 (23:43):
Ask Kevin Acy about it coming up next to San
Diego Sports seven sixty live on my Heart Radio app
AC who is out in Arizona cover in Padre spring training? keV,
have you been able to keep an eye on the
World Baseball Classic at all?
Speaker 5 (23:56):
A little bit? Yeah, I mean enough to feel like
I got an idea of the vibe. If the d
R can get past whoever there, the quarterfinal point will
be and we won't know that until they played Venezuela tomorrow.
Then I'm going to head out there to see Manuel
and Fernando. I guess Mason Miller as well.
Speaker 1 (24:18):
Manuel would be Manny Machado is who Kevin is referring
to there, Kevin, I hope everything's going well and your
world things are going just peachy back here in San Diego.
Sammy's actually heading out to spring training this upcoming Thursday Friday.
I'll be there the following week, so maybe there's room
for Kevin ac beer in between all of that. Although
I know you're an old fashioned guy yourself, but keV,
(24:40):
let's talk about these Padres. So you have an article
out today about Joe Musgrove getting some extra rest, but
what can you tell us about the Nick Pavetta arm fatigue.
Understanding the Padre fans very cautious about the words arm
and fatigue.
Speaker 5 (24:53):
Right, Well, we're talking about two guys with arm fatigue,
one of them coming off Tommy John surgery. And if
you had to listen, take this in contact here, if
he had to be concerned about one of them being
like ready or full go or you know, like you
were expecting at the start of the season, it would
be Joe. And that's only because there is uncertainty, and
(25:14):
they've been really straightforward about that from the start that hey,
Joe's healthy, but we're going to not push him too hard,
and so that's what's happening now with him. Taveeta. He
missed the start. He's gonna start on Saturday. He missed
the start through to day what they call a touch
and go, it's a light bullpen for a throw bullpen
(25:36):
on Thursday, after the off day, and then start on Saturday.
And I would think he went three innings as long
as he can get to like four and like, let's
say sixty pitches this time. I would think that then
he goes like six or seven days later and gets
up to seventy seventy five pitches and then he's lined
(25:57):
up for opening day, is what I would think. But look,
I understand the concern anytime or in the course anytime
that you hear, especially if you're talking about one of
your top starters, you hear arm fatigue or oh he's
being pushed back. There's concerned, but Nick Favetta is by
all accounts.
Speaker 1 (26:16):
Fucking Kevin.
Speaker 3 (26:17):
What do you make of the offensive output so far
in spring training? Scoring twenty seven runs last week? Is
there something here?
Speaker 4 (26:24):
Is it?
Speaker 3 (26:24):
Should we read anything into it? Or is it simply
just spring training? Or do the Potters have a little
bit more hitting depth than maybe we give them credit for.
Speaker 5 (26:32):
I think maybe both. I mean, I really do.
Speaker 1 (26:34):
It's spring training.
Speaker 5 (26:35):
I mean a lot of these were runs. Were twenty
seven runs against the Mariners on Thursday fourteen, against the
Reds and facing minor league pitchers or minor league hitters
for the Padres, you know, being a part of the production,
a big part, if not the only part of the
production in some innings. But the fact is, like they're
getting some good atvats from Jake Kronolworth, from the Castillanos
(27:00):
Anduhar and those are guys that you're like, Okay, if
those guys can help fill out the lineup, if those
guys can make them longer, then that's big. Again even
with them if whatever you see it's still just spring training.
But I think that there's merit in thinking that the
Padres are going to be a better offensive team. Have
(27:21):
the potential to be a better offensive team based on
what we're saying in spring. But I mean, I don't
know where they're at, like what their stats are, but
I know that they're completely inflated by it being Arizona.
I mean the other day yesterday, I forget who it was.
In the ninth indyen hit a ball toward left field,
and if that were last Thursday, it might have gone
to the parking lot and it was caught in shallow
(27:43):
left field because the wind was coming in versus going out.
Speaker 1 (27:46):
Kevin ACR Padres, insider from the San Diego Union Tribune,
joining us today here on San Diego Sports seven sixty. Kevi,
let's get an update on some of these guys who
are fighting for spots, maybe not even at the beginning
of this year, but potentially later in the year. Guys
like to France Alex Verdugo, what's going on? How do
they look? And who are we expecting to be with
the roster opening day.
Speaker 5 (28:07):
I've never seen Alex Ferdugo do anything except take batting practice,
and people say that he looks good, but moreover they
talk about it seems like he's super engaged, especially when
he came in the minor league deal, and not just that.
It's minor league camp all the way and he's not
going to play in the Cactus League almost certainly. So
it's like you've got to earn your way back by being,
you know, showing that maybe some of the things in
(28:30):
the past about maybe not being all that dedicated are
are no longer true, and that you realize that you know,
this is your chance. And so the reports have been
really good on that with Alex Ferdugo. And then that
is a guy who could help you if he can
get back to being one of the better hitters against
right handers and also a pretty decent glove and a
(28:52):
great arm or you know, almost great arm at three
outfield positions, that would be huge. But for right now,
it's like, yeah, that guy's a minor leaguer. Ty France
is a what to called a twenty D free agent,
and that means that you may have six year service
time and he can opt out five days before or
four days before it could actually falls on March twenty
(29:13):
first this year, he can opt out of his contract
and try to sign with another team. Then if not,
then yeah, he can go to the minor leagues. And
then he has certain opt outs during the year. Walker
Fueler has the same thing. So ty France there took
He's fighting his way onto the roster, and with sun
(29:33):
Moon Song perhaps probably perhaps Slash probably not able to
start the season, I think there's a spot for Tyson
France or Jose Miranda. I don't think both, regardless of
the good springs they're having, I don't think there's room
for two corner guys who are limited to playing corner infield.
Speaker 3 (29:52):
Jason Adam on track for opening day, Hey, how do
you think they kind of handle his workload? And then
when he's fully healthy, do you think he has a
shot to be the premiere man? Or where does he
fall in the bullpen?
Speaker 5 (30:03):
You know, he's been through it bullpen since the beginning
of December to the pitching. Maybe not one hundred percent
because there still is the matter of him landing on
that left leg, So maybe not really one hundred percent
until just now, but he's been going and so I
think once they clear him, and I think it's going
(30:23):
to be this weekend to pitch in the Cactus League,
that that's not the workload is not an issue. I mean,
perhaps a tiny bit like you know, we would have
used it here and but you know what, we felt
like we to get away with nod and that was
good to give Jason a little grace. But it's the
one run game and it's the eighth inning of Jason
and he normally would have you know, he hasn't already gone.
(30:44):
You know, it's early in the season, so he didn't
already do it back to back and you know it's
a third day. We're not going to pitch it then
no matter what. But like normal circumstances, I think Jason
Adam is going to be full go once he is cleared.
Because the issue has been the cutting the stop in
the starting and and like doing sudden movements, you know,
(31:05):
fielding and that sort of thing that's that you can't
control in the game that may come up, may not
come up, but the event that it does, you got
to make sure Jason Adams ready And that's why they've
been so cautious. It's not his arm. The guy's ready
to go. And you're you know, I think you're right.
You know you said that premiere all set up guy.
I mean, there's not too many have been better in
(31:27):
that role over the last three maybe four years.
Speaker 1 (31:31):
It was funny all season long. We talked about Jason
Adam being overworked last year, and it wasn't an arm
injury that took him out. It was the ruptured quad,
which could happen at any time. It could happen to
me today, stepping off the curb in a weird way.
All right, keV, before we get you out of here.
Two weeks ago, was it? We had ownership kerfuffle with
the bids hitting the table and everything last week. No
(31:51):
new news this week so far, no new news. You
got anything for us?
Speaker 5 (31:55):
No? No, that's the kind of thing that when it drops,
it'll drop. I mean, maybe we here that maybe someone
pulled out, but when it drops, it drops.
Speaker 1 (32:04):
People are not leaking too many informations on three billion
dollar deals. It'd be cool if they did, though, wouldn't it, keV? I?
Speaker 5 (32:18):
Yes, of course. And then also it's like just another
thing to have to check in on every day. And
I'm certainly not checking in on the ownership situation every
day because I would be driving people numps. You know,
these are pretty complex situations that people are working on,
you know, in some instances, you know, franctly around the
park because it's very well could happen here in a
(32:41):
matter of weeks.
Speaker 1 (32:42):
Well, all right, Kevin ac, are you finding any new
places in Arizona this year that you haven't had before?
Speaker 4 (32:47):
Food?
Speaker 5 (32:49):
I don't think so. As a matter of fact, I
have not been out one time. And I know that
that's going to disappoint you. But that's only because of
your expectations. You should know me by now that that
I'm not doing anything. You know, I'm not doing anything
I do.
Speaker 1 (33:05):
I feel like I know you pretty well, keV. We've
we've shared a meal, We've had drinks together. I just
I think that there is a there's a social butterfly
that lives within you, Kevin. Every once in a while,
you just got to let it free. Okay.
Speaker 5 (33:18):
I did go out with the people at the Candy.
It is a hotel in Scottsdale. Uh and uh, you know,
got some stuff done there. Other than not having anything,
you guys are coming out. There are three restaurants Blanco,
what's another one, North Italia and Portinos right there is
(33:39):
their second year of being basically in the parking lot
right next to the ballpark. Perhaps we could get a
glass of you know, a pino noir or something.
Speaker 4 (33:52):
Just int us to have a drink.
Speaker 1 (33:54):
Wow, Kevin, I am flattered. I will be honest, You
and Aj Preller should just go hit up the Olive
Garden or is that his restaurant. It's Olive Garden, right
that he likes.
Speaker 5 (34:02):
I'm not going to tell you, but it's not all
of garden.
Speaker 1 (34:05):
I am.
Speaker 5 (34:05):
I going to tell you only out of respect, like
I don't tell people where the team stays or anything
like that. It is not exactly a chain, but not
exactly not a chain. It's not like something that's everywhere.
But the place that is his new favorite here is
different God, and it has been in the past.
Speaker 1 (34:26):
But Aj Prewler is as boring of an eater as
you are. Isn't that right?
Speaker 5 (34:30):
He does go out though, because I'm positive he has
no idea how to quote anything.
Speaker 1 (34:35):
He just knows how to play pick up basketball. All right, keV,
thanks for your.
Speaker 4 (34:38):
Stuff, man.
Speaker 1 (34:38):
We'll talk to you next week, right, take care. Devin Acy,
Union Tribune our padres Insider. We love him every week.
No octave change in Kevin's voice. He was telling the truth.
Speaker 3 (34:47):
We got his tell Do we think he said not
a chain but is a chain? So that's not very helpful.
There's a lot of salad and goes out there that is.
Speaker 1 (34:55):
I know for a fact it used to be Olive Garden.
Speaker 4 (34:59):
I feel like J. Peller is definitely a cheesecake factory guy.
Speaker 1 (35:02):
It does.
Speaker 3 (35:02):
Yeah, I feel like that's his big night out. That's
a cheesecake, not even a shot to the cheesecake. Cheesecake
has a very well and it's.
Speaker 1 (35:09):
Nice and dark in the cheesecake factory big menu. Any
different part of the world that the cheesecake.
Speaker 3 (35:15):
Any kind of drink there, You have a cocktail, you
could have a you could have a little wine.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
All right, text line seven zero four seven zero sorry,
mess with the team. What is AJ Peler's dining spot
of choice? He's not a fancy guy. AJ much prefers
the like Olive gardenesque type food.
Speaker 3 (35:31):
Sometimes you just got a roll to the og. Olive
Garden's always I I I love me some Olive Garden.
Speaker 1 (35:38):
I don't I like their breadsticks. That's about it.
Speaker 4 (35:40):
You know, like Olive Garden.
Speaker 1 (35:41):
I think their pasta kind of sucks. Crucify me if
you must.
Speaker 3 (35:43):
First off, Olive Garden gives real portions my thing with
I love Italian food. But sometimes you go to these
really fancy Italian restaurants and it's like thirty dollars, except
you get like three bikes.
Speaker 1 (35:53):
You're ordering wrong.
Speaker 3 (35:56):
First off, the fetichini boat or whatever they have a
sure unbelievable. I mean sure, you're literally asking for diabetes,
but it is fantastic.
Speaker 1 (36:06):
Do you know we don't have time for this, but
I'm gonna say it anyways. Do you know what real
fetichini alfredo is?
Speaker 4 (36:11):
No?
Speaker 2 (36:11):
Like it?
Speaker 1 (36:12):
So American fetichini alfredo has heavy whipping cream, has parmesan cheese.
It's very yummy, delicious. Loss of salt that cheese, baby legit.
Italian fetichini alfredo. You take a stick of butter, you
flatten it out into a pad. You put it at
the bottom of a warm plate or a bowl. You
put pasta on top of that. You sprinkle parmesan on
top of that Alfredo. Done. I didn't know you were
(36:35):
a chef. No heavy whipping cream, no nothing. You can
do a little salt, maybe a little chopped garlic, but
that's it.
Speaker 3 (36:41):
It's a problem that I'm only forty five minutes into
my six hour day and I'm really hungry.
Speaker 1 (36:45):
And you're you've stopped eating like crackers and chips and stuff.
Speaker 4 (36:49):
Oh we give that up.
Speaker 1 (36:50):
Oh say, you've made it like a month and a half.
Speaker 3 (36:52):
Okay, No, no, I I did the whole note card
thing for like three days, and I started feeling so ill.
I can't I can't do this, so I have to
have a little bread.
Speaker 1 (37:02):
That's why we've been losing. Long Shots. Long Shots coming
up next, San Diego Sports seven sixty live on iHeart
Radio app No.
Speaker 4 (37:07):
Seven six says HS and chuck e cheese.
Speaker 1 (37:11):
Oh, chuck e cheese. I'm so sick of chuck of cheese.
Office reference nailed it all right, Samuel. Let's get to
long shots today. Brutal loss last night, but we got
tennis back in the fold today with the BNP paarabog
open going. Is our boyd Tiafo gonna make an appearance
potentially mice so's our girl, Pagola gonna make an appearance, hopefully.
Speaker 4 (37:30):
You want her to make it appearance and any excuse.
Speaker 1 (37:31):
To watch one of her matches. I'm in Sammy, I
love go ahead. Are we ready?
Speaker 4 (37:38):
We're ready? Actually?
Speaker 1 (37:40):
You looking for some luck? I want to win big?
It was so money we don't even know what time.
Take a chant. Play that to me and his many
quit long shots. Honestly, if you haven't seen it, watched
the episode of the Office where Dwight gets Everyone's seen
it where Dwight gets a concussion and tries to tell
(38:01):
them that they're going to chuck e cheese and Michael goes,
oh man, so sick of chuck e cheese? All right,
comedy gold Fanaust Sammy.
Speaker 3 (38:09):
Okay, Perry ba opened everyone, you need to stop what
you're doing.
Speaker 4 (38:14):
In the words of three.
Speaker 1 (38:16):
Or Gano is the cousin of shalom Ski.
Speaker 4 (38:19):
Yes, Oregano's the cousin of Shalomskin. Okay, listen, listen.
Speaker 3 (38:25):
Wait, you need to rush to the gambling app of
your choice because this match starts in six minutes.
Speaker 4 (38:31):
Okay.
Speaker 3 (38:33):
Francis Tiafo Alexander Zabrev Zaverev, excuse me. Over twenty two
and a half games now, Zaverev has beaten Tiafo eight
of nine times in his career except Tiafo. When he
was playing his best tennis, was in the top ten
in the world rankings in twenty twenty three. His game
has slipped a little bit since then. Didn't have a
great Wimbledon showing, didn't have a great French Open showing.
(38:55):
He has been on fire. He absolutely took a part
Flavio Koboli, the fifteenth Italian tennis player in the world.
Tiafo's currently a twenty one. Tiafo's backhand has been on
point in this tournament. He has been one of the
best tennis players the last couple of months. In one
of the Mexican events in Mexico City, he made the
final and lost. He has historically played well at Indian
(39:17):
Wells out in Palm Springs. Zaverev is not actually the
best he's ever done and in the Perry bot Is
make it to the round of thirty two. Zaverev is
an excellent player, He's a top five. He just can't
beat Alcaz, can't beat Center, can't get.
Speaker 4 (39:30):
Over the hump with the best players in the world.
Speaker 3 (39:32):
But in this matchup, I like the over twenty two
and a half games because Tiafle's playing excellent. Zaverev is
too good to get swept. I think this goes to
a third set. Either Tiafo or Zverev is gonna win,
but it's gonna come down in the wire, give me
over twenty two and a half games in the Perrybot
open for Francis Tiafo and Alexander saverev again gets going
here in about five minutes. So rushing your bets, all right,
(39:54):
head of the NBA Celtics and the Spurs, give me
the under too. Twenty one and a half. Looking at
the injury report, Peyton Pritchard, one of the best players
for the Boston Celtics all year, averaging about eighteen points
per game start this season, coming off the bench, has
now elevated into the starting lineup. With Jayson Tatum back,
his role has been diminished a little bit, but he
(40:15):
is out tonight. In Nicola, Vucevich is also out tonight,
their big center. So when we should have a field day.
But this Celtics team plays excellent defense. They're one of
the best defenses in the entire NBA. They hold teams
to one hundred and ten points per game. They held
the Cleveland Cavaliers over the weekend to ninety eight points.
That is the calling card of their team. And with
Tatum and Brown back, they're gonna be able to shut
(40:37):
down some of these guards. For the Spurs and your
Dylan Harper's You're darn Boxer Stefan Castle. I think the
inclination Vegas wants us to go over because Jayson Tatum
is back. But really, this calling card of this team
is still defense. Give me the under two twenty one
and a half Celtics on the road, taken on the Spurs, and.
Speaker 4 (40:54):
Then we're going.
Speaker 3 (40:55):
We had some success with Santa Clara last night we
called the outright money line. Not gonna do that again
against Gonzaga because Gonzaga is a different beast Randy K.
They have an amazing front court. Feels like Grandyk's played
college basketball for about seven years now.
Speaker 1 (41:08):
I don't think he was at Wyoming for five years,
so now he's been a Gonzaga for five more.
Speaker 4 (41:12):
It's unbelievable what we're gonna do here.
Speaker 3 (41:14):
We're going with point totals today over one fifty seven
and a half. Both teams averaged in the eighties. Gonzaga
averages eighty five points per game. Santa Clara averaged about
eighty three points per game. Gonzaga does play good defense,
only allowing about sixty five, but Santa Clara does not
have a big that's gonna be able to stop e
k in the front court. That's kind of Gonzaga's calling card.
But also Santa Clara's guards have really been on a heater.
(41:36):
They took it to Saint Mary's. Saint Mary's team is
built around their guards. In Santa Clara last night really
took it to him and out played them.
Speaker 4 (41:44):
I think on the even though this is.
Speaker 3 (41:45):
The championship game, Gonzaga coming off a beat down over
Oregon State, so they have a little bit of rest,
unrest of starters. I like the over in this game
one fifty seven and a half. I think this is
all offensive fireworks. Gonzaga trying to close out the WC
with a win in the tournament, in Santa Clara, trying
to make sure they are an autobid into the NCAA Tournament,
(42:06):
not just trying to hear their names called.
Speaker 4 (42:08):
I was one of the last teams.
Speaker 3 (42:09):
In so to recap Santa Clara and Gonzaga over one
fifty seven and a half point total in the NBA
Celtics and Spurs under two twenty one and a half,
I mean, gets the defensive slug fest down there in
San Antonio, and then like Francis Tiafo and Alexander Zaverev
at the Perrybot Open getting going in two minutes. We're
going over twenty two and a half games for some
(42:31):
tennis locks.
Speaker 1 (42:32):
