Speaker 1 (00:01):
The clock.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
What time be new?
Speaker 3 (00:05):
I'll keep famous.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
The day is half over. Now it's time to enter
the Fletchsode.
Speaker 3 (00:12):
Yeah, the day is half over, but we've just begun
a brand new week here on San Diego Sports seven sixty.
Ben Fletcher, Sammy long with you until two o'clock today,
John Shape for actually Jonathan Riskin, we'll be taking over Van.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
What's going on? Everybody? How are we doing today?
Speaker 1 (00:29):
Sammy?
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Before we get anything going, are you ready to have
a great show? I am ready to have a great
Are you ready to have a great show? I was
about to say something that I realize can't say that
on FCC away. We're ready to have a great fan show.
That's what I'm talking about. Hey, busy weekend, craziness all around.
We're gonna get kind of through this first segment a
little bit quicker than normal because we've got Adrian Garcia
Marquez who's gonna be jumping on.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
At twelve fifteen.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
We have a four pack of San Diego Safari Park
tickets to give away.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Are you kidding me?
Speaker 1 (00:54):
Right now?
Speaker 3 (00:54):
That's one of my favorite things about San Diego is
the Safari Parks. So keep listening because this is gonna
be here. The Elephant exhibit is brand new, and we
got four pack of tickets for you coming up on
the show in just a little bit. We are gonna
start with the Aztecs before we get to the Big
Three here because San Diego State isok a tough one
in New Mexico.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
Man I was in studio for the entire game.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
John Schaeffer obviously on the road, but watching every second
of that game is so frustrating because San Diego State
did outplay New Mexico. And you can subtweet me on that,
you can send some texts on that, but I'm telling
you the numbers will bear it out. San Diego State
outplayed New Mexico in that game. They made more shots
than them, they had a better field goal percented to them,
Their offensive and defensive efficiencies.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
Were both better than them.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
I think they even out rebounded them, which is crazy.
But San Diego State loses, and thus we'll see what
that means for their at large possibilities whatever, blah blah blah,
who cares. When the Mountain West Tournament, we'll see what happens.
But it really came down to the fact that San
Diego State couldn't make a freaking free throw, and yeah,
they let bullyon get a million offensive rebounds.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
But even with that, if you just made.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
Free throws, you probably win that game by five or
six points. To diego say it stinks that that's what
the season comes down to. But ultimately they lost that
game with the free throw line, and maybe they lost
their chance at an NCAA tournament bid at the free
throw line, which is so beyond frustrating, but it just
kind of is what it is.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
And that's sort of how Saturday went.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
It was tough. Nine one three is say I'm worried
about the SASU as text, I'm afraid it's over. It's
not over because they can win the Mountain West Conference tournament.
But Saturday was tough. I mean, you outline the free throws.
You can't expect to go on the road in a
hostile environment and miss that many free throws.
Speaker 3 (02:32):
And I mean, think of what a free throw in
thirteen of twenty two, So they missed nine free throws.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
You make five of those free throws, it's.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
A tight, tight game. I mean, that's nine miss free
throws on the road is brutal. The key seminal moment
in the game, and I am no way of putting
this game on Restix and Waters because a lot of
everyone had contributions to this loss. The blow and mislayup
which led to the three on the other end, was
a real kind of turning point with about three to
four minutes.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
To go, the way he had Newman wide opening the
corner on that play.
Speaker 4 (03:00):
It was.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
It was because before that coments for that, I believe
that New Mexico going up seven to nine points and
then Burt hit the big shots. Newman hit a big three,
so it felt like all the momentum was changing. Yeah,
Aramel that layup, then all of a sudden it's back
the other way. Yeah, bou Yam was fantastic. I mean,
you just gotta tip your hat to him. Twenty four points,
eighteen rebounds. It was. I'm glad in a way. We
(03:22):
were talking about this a little bit before the show.
I'm kind of glad that Dutch went with the hot
hands at the end of the game, and I know
it didn't d up working out, but Tay Simmons and
Elsie Harrington, I think if you would have told a
lot of people the first couple months of the season
that the true freshman will be closing a game with
literally they're at large bid lives on the line, and
I'm glad they did because they were two of the
hottest players in the game and they didn't just go
(03:45):
to the so called veteran stars. They went with the
guys who were performing at the highest level. Look, it's
a tough loss. It was a tough game to begin with.
They were dogs going into the game. You feel like
they had opportunities. But it just feels like we said
that a lot with this astex team this year. They're talented,
they look really good in spurts, but it just feels
like they're missing that key signature win in some of
(04:07):
the big, key moments in some of these games.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
Yeah, it's stunk Man, And we could talk all day
about the referee kind of blowing the call in the
challenge review at the end of the game where clearly
the ball was off New Mexico. But then the very
next play was the bull Yon kind of just chucking
it up down in the second half of the court
and Miles burd and Resix and Waters converging at the
same time as a New Mexico player and committing a
foul and that was the game, was that moment. But
(04:30):
San Diego State loses. Probably at this point, you just
have to win the Mountain West Tournament. Unless there's some
chaos happening at the bubble. Probably you have to go
win the Mountain West Tournament, and they're more than capable
of doing that. They did, by the way, lock up
a bye in the first round because of Nevada's loss,
So San Diego State will only have to win three
games in three days. I say only it's gonna be chaos.
We know what the Mountain West Tournament is, but they'll
(04:51):
have every opportunity to go out and do that.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
With the win.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
By the way, New Mexico might have locked themselves up
and at large bit which is crazy, but New Mexico
may have done that team that was on the bubble
going into that game. So we'll see what happens the
rest of the way. Two more games Boise State tomorrow
night on the road, which is also going to be
really tough game, and then you got UNLV to finish
out the season at home on Friday.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
All right.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
YouTube is open at San Diego Sports seven sixty. Text
line is Rocking Texas seven zero four to seven zero.
Start your message with the word team and we'll get
to all of them as the show progresses. Adrian Garcia
Marquez in ten minutes. Right now, it's time for the
Big three, where Sammy Long rips through the top stories
in the world of sports. And Sammy, we got some
NFL today, we got some fun news today, so let's
go ahead and smash it.
Speaker 4 (05:33):
Sure, look Frank is here. Ready to go back to
the office and knock the socks off your friends, I.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Mean co workers. It's time for the top stories of
the day.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
Three three and a reminder, the new Elephant Valley at
the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is now open.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
You can get up close and roam alongside of it.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
Yeah, it's largest land animals. All week, we got chances
for you to win a family four pack of tickets
to go see the new Elfan Valley. And so are
the only ones who will never forget because they have
great memories.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
That's clever.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
Elephant Valley at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Keep
listening for your chance to win a four pack of tickets.
Have you been to the Safari Park?
Speaker 1 (06:10):
Oh, it's fantasm I've gone many times.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
Walked around with the kangaroos. Yep, it's so cool up there, man.
I really like the best part about this fire park
is the tram. They take you on the tram on
the on the back side of it.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
It's done the mimosa thing on the tram before it's.
Speaker 1 (06:23):
That's that's the nice way you've been walking for a while.
Rest of the legs and kick back.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
And they saw that bar there that you're like in
the draft enclosure while.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
I went on field trips there.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Oh, really look at you before you could drink?
Speaker 3 (06:36):
Yeah, allegedly is high school? All right, Sammie, where are
we going for legal reasons anyway?
Speaker 1 (06:42):
NFL? Yeah, I've got some great NFL stories post NFL Combine.
Today we had a trade. The Lions traded David Montgomery,
star running back to the Texans for offensive linemen, Juice
Scrugs and two draft picks. A reaction to the trade
and number two, which team, the Texans or the Lions,
have a better chance to win their division next year?
Speaker 3 (07:02):
Oh, that's a great question. I love the move for
the Texans. I think David Montgomery is excellent.
Speaker 4 (07:07):
Man.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
When you talk about like true hammers in this league.
It kind of went from mark Ingram was that guy
you remember the team on when he was with the Saints,
when he had mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara in the
same backfield and they both were top two rushers in the.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
NFL that year.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
That is what David Montgomery is to Jamiir Gibbs, and
he's fantastic at it. I think we may have seen
his best when he was with the Detroit Lions, but
David Montgomery to the Texans makes a lot of sense,
and that bails out c. J.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Shroud and they've had running.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
Back issues over the last couple of years, so I
love that move for them. For the Lions, it does
sting a little bit, and I think the biggest sting
of it is that this may make Jamiir Gibbs worse
because they're so different with how they run. It gives
defenses so much to have to prepare for because David
Montgomery is very much the hammer that can just kind
of plow holes and Jamiir Gibbs is more of the
(07:55):
bounce around guy who's athleticism is second to none.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
But the Lions, you knew.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
This was coming where they were gonna have to start
making some tough decisions because of how much they pay
that roster, and David mctgommery is the first one to fall.
I don't know who's gonna be next, but they gotta
go find David Montgomery in the draft because you need
that compliment to Jami or Gibbs. With that being said,
I still think the Lions have a better shot to
win their division because I trust Jared Goff a lot
more than I trust CJ.
Speaker 1 (08:20):
Shroud I A on the trade. I think it's a
really good deal for both sides. If you're Houston, you
need you need a surefire back running with Joe you know,
Joe Mixon and some of these kind of washed up
guys Nick Chubb. That's just not a way to go.
Woody Marks was a rookie last year out of USC.
Really talented player, but he's more of a scat back,
more of a receiving back you need every everyday downhill runner.
(08:44):
Good for them, I get Dan Campbell's selling offensive line,
Juice Scruggs. They lit up on a couple of picks.
I am gonna agree with you on the Lions, though,
because even though the Texans, you look at the division
and go it's a much easier division to win because
I think you only look at Jacksonville is a real threat.
The Coleston have a quarterback in Tennessee. Let's just say
(09:04):
saw like it's it turned around. There's still a lot
of pieces away from being in contention. Having said that,
Jacksonville won that division with Travis Hunter out, Travis Hunter
missed most of the year, that team is only going
to get better. And Houston that performance that G. J.
Stroud had in the postseason, that doesn't just go away.
And I'm not saying that he's gonna suck now, but
(09:25):
I mean four interceptions against the Patriots team that wasn't
putting a lot of pressure on you offensively. And I
do think the Lions, although the Bears are gonna be
good and I don't believe in the Vikings, but the
Packers I think are gonna come back to the meaning
a little bit that they feel like they're just six
year in, year out constantly the seven seed. I think
they could miss the playoffs. I am going to go
(09:45):
with the Lions because the Lions, for as much as
I praised the Bears, and I think the Bears aren't
going anywhere. They did benefit off a very easy schedule
for the first two to three months of the season.
The Lions, figuring to be back in the picture, had
a rough first couple of months there. I actually think
they might win the division next year, So I'm gonna
go with Detroit.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
There's just too much talent on Detroit for them to
be as right next year.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
And if they don't win the division or go deep
in the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Serious Dan Campbell questions Dan.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
Campbell's fired, Golf's out. There's gonna be a lot of
question marks about that team because you can't just keep
running the same team back every year and expecting them
to be good. All right? Who next saw Jerry Jones?
Jerry Jones said, I would bet we would spend more
money in free agency than we have on the Cowboys
free agency plans. He said he plans to quote bust
(10:33):
the budget and he's going after defense. Where do you
see the Cowboys in the NFC next year?
Speaker 2 (10:41):
The same place they have been for the last decade.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
It feels like they're probably good enough to make a
playoff spot next year, not good enough to do anything
with it. They're good enough to be a first or
second round exit. I do love that this is the
time of year where Jerry will say something like this,
and then you'll click over to ESPN and they'll start saying,
this is why Dallas is Super Bowl contenders this year
because they are playcating to the majority of this country
that is Dallas Cowboys fans or Dallas Cowboys haters. So
(11:06):
this is gonna start coming right now. And I who's
available on the defensive side?
Speaker 2 (11:10):
Like, are they bringing in Max Crosby? Is that what
they're saying?
Speaker 1 (11:12):
There's a report they're checking in on him.
Speaker 3 (11:13):
Okay, So I mean I don't exactly know what that
means at this point. You just let out a pretty
highly priced defensive player in Micah Parsons. Are you gonna
make the same mistake again, which if you bring in
somebody who you're gonna have to give one hundred million
dollar contract to guess what, you still have the same problem.
All your money is gonna be dedicated to four or
five people on your team. This seems to be a
spread out option for the Dallas Cowboys. And I give
(11:34):
Jerry a lot of credit, man, he did a good
job this last season of kind of shoring up that
defense and making it better on the cheap. They need
to continue to do that and not necessarily just go
after some high priced right star.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
Right.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
It's so, I differ. I actually think the Cowboys are
a Super Bowl contendent ust year. You and Orlovski and
I know people are gonna go, what the hell think
about what they're building the offense late. The offense is
up there top five last year, and we'll see what
happens with George Pickens, with Ceedee Lamb, whoever's there, Dak Prescott.
(12:07):
The offensive line is improving the run game. If Jerry
Jones holds Truder's word, which is a big gift because
last year he said the same thing and they didn't
do anything in free agency outside of the Michael Parsons
straight right before the year. If I'm running the Cowboys,
the entire draft is defense. I am drafting defense. With
my first three picks. We're attacking every level of the defense.
(12:28):
They have some talent on that side of the ball.
I think that division's up for grabs. I think the
Eagles are coming back to the pack a little bit.
They haven't made big offseason moves. I didn't like the
offensive coordinator higher the Commanders will be back in the
picture hardball. Get the Giants humming, but that division is
gonna be one to watch next year. I think the
Cowboys if they do address the defensive side of the ball.
The NFC is much more wide open than I think
(12:48):
people give it credit for.
Speaker 3 (12:50):
All Right, we got Adrian Garcia Marquez coming up next,
so we're gonna set aside here for a second. We'll
get back to the Big Three coming up at twelve thirty.
We also got those some Fari Park sikets for you
have four pack of them coming up this hour.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
Don't go anywhere.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
Adrian Garcia Marquez coming up next. He's the voice of
SDFC is going to be doing the WBC this year.
Busiest man in sports aside at San Diego Sports seven
sixty Live, I Heart Radio app. You heard him last
night on the call. Also doing some WBC stuff this year.
The busiest man in sports, Adrian, how are you man?
It's been too long.
Speaker 4 (13:20):
I've been doing great. Thank you for the invite. You know,
anytime you guys call me up and we're ready. We're ready, man,
Let's go. Let's talk le chat and I think we're
all feeling really good about what's happening with San DIEGOFC.
I know you guys are are enjoying it. We're enjoying it.
The finest cities enjoying it. It's a special time in
Sandego for food.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
One yeah, two.
Speaker 2 (13:37):
Game seven goals. The offense is humming so far, Adrian,
what have you seen, Well.
Speaker 4 (13:42):
We've seen Palteto go right back to work right under
the Dyer. What an amazing human being, player, you name it,
the kind of guy you want on your team. You
win championships with guys like jet at Deskuff and under
the Dyer and the way that they played, their level
raises the level of everybody else and under this was
very home and our conversation with him over the week,
(14:02):
you know, leading into this match day too, he was
talking about how important it is on the team to
work together as a collective, and that's what's been happening.
Nobody thinks they're the start. Nobody thinks that this is
you know, he's more important. The name won on the
back of the jersey's not more important than the name
on the front. I love that mentality and that's why
it's not, you know, surprising that they're having the success
(14:23):
because this is a team well oiled machine, and Mikey
Bodas has them all humming, and under the Diyre is
right there at the top doing everything that he's doing
and supplying. I mean when you look at under the Diire,
now what forty two combined goals assists in like seventy games.
I mean, the guy is the palato delivers on a
(14:43):
hot day when you need the most, he comes in
and he comes through.
Speaker 1 (14:47):
You're just talking about your dryer mal Pelagrino. Everyone's kind
of got in on the scoring. I heard you and
Darren talking about last week. You know, the the second
year drop off can be a real thing. We've seen
expansion teams and a lot of different sports have great
first season in second year kind of come back to earth,
Like what has kind of gone into from sdfc's perspective
getting off to such a hot start being to and oh.
Speaker 4 (15:10):
I think more than anything else is just going right
back to work. And I think it's the Mikey Abada's
message from all messages, yaodaka, what now? What's next? You know,
you never kind of just hang your head on that
last victory. You kind of move on. There's more business
to be taken care of in this team as that mentality.
So I think that they've carried that over from last year,
understanding that there is definitely a bulls eye on their
(15:31):
back and they seem to welcome it. They want to
be that team that teams kind of try to raise
their level to beat and say, all right, I'm gonna
be that club that takes down SBFC, or you saw
it in Puma's attitude during gonkakof Champions Cup. I heard
chatter colleagues, They're like, all right, bumas are gonna humble
and bring them back to earth to let them know
where what gone cut comp is like in Boom we
go and literally just destroy the ThunderCats and it was
(15:53):
just well done. And I think that that confidence has
carried over from the training ground to Gonkakoff Champions Cup two,
match day one and now match day two again. This
is this is part of the Right to Dream style
of play. This is something that I don't think surprises
the organization. It doesn't surprise Tedler Heaps, it doesn't surprise
Mikey Bodas. This is what these guys expected when they
built this machine.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
Adrian Garcia Marquez, the voice of SDFC with us here
today on San Diego Sports seven sixty. Adrian, I got
to give your partner, your co host on game broadcast,
a ton of credit because Darren Smith was banging the
drum for fifteen twenty years talking about if you just
get an MLS team here to San Diego, it's gonna
work and the crowds will be outrageous. Two games in,
(16:34):
it's like you could tell this fan base was itching
for the season to get back started again after the
success of year one. What can you say about the crowd,
what can you say about that supporter section at SDFC
games and how pack snap dragon is on a regular basis.
Speaker 4 (16:49):
Guess a beautiful thing that's happening with San Diego, the
relationship between you know, the fan base, the ones that
are arriving now, the ones that kind of jumped in
halfway through that season. And of course from TEDA is
the leading the way and leading the charge with the chance,
the singing, the vibe one of the best vibes, as
you mentioned, and I appreciate the comment of you know,
working hard in this business, so I've had a chance
(17:10):
to be in many many venues across different sports from baseball, basketball, football,
you name it. And one of the best atmospheres is
ours at the Murf Dragon when it's on fire, when
it's just hum and you hear you know, like you know,
the Suli chrome chance everything. And as a broadcaster, that
gives you the energy. So you kind of bring that
into the microphone and it all comes together the fans,
(17:30):
as Darren will put it. And I'm glad you brought
that up as well, because he was one of those
people definitely banging the drum. And I believe you know
a lot of us that understand the market, understand the
football in San Diego. It doesn't surprise us. This is
a team, or excuse me, a city that should have
had a team a long time ago, but circumstances didn't
allow it. Destiny as all, this is what was meant
to be and meant to happen, and I think we're
all very happy with the product and especially the city
(17:52):
of San Diego. And last night there was a certain
point and I would like to look at it as
a milestone turning point, and Darren did point it out
during the podcast. There were a couple of occasions where
it was a non goal, non assist, situation. It was
just well shepherded defense, Well done on that backland those
backland boys singing again, and the crowd on the south
(18:13):
end started to applaud. That's said, oh football, That means
you know, the quality of the football. The San Diego
f C is playing on the defensive side as well
as the highlight offensive side. So that's just telling you
that the city of San Diego there is already a
built in fan base and we're seeing it and they're delivering.
But also the dormant part of that fan base that's
coming into this and just wants to be part of
(18:35):
the bible of San Diego FC. Familia, You're all welcome.
This is one big party at the Murph Dragon and
we're going to support this team in this club all
the way through. And I think the performances are going
to hype us up as well, because this team is
not going to stop.
Speaker 1 (18:48):
Vegas is certainly back in. SDFC got him at the
fourth best odds to win the MLS Cup obviously super early.
They got into Miami one, LAFC two, Vancouver three, and
then SDFC. In your opinion, Adrian, as somebod who watches
a lot of MLS football. Who do you think is
stfc's number one competition to get out of the Western
Conference as DFC.
Speaker 4 (19:11):
I think that these guys, you know, and I'm saying
it kind of like tongue in cheek San Diego IFC.
I think they don't care what everybody else is doing.
Mikey Wadas talks to these guys about this. Whatever other
sides do, who they have, what's on their roster, who's
on their roster, It doesn't matter to these guys. These
guys are gonna play their style of football. They're gonna
be relentless, They're gonna be fearless. It's gonna be teamwork,
(19:32):
and then it's gonna be a next man of mentality
you saw with Brian Zamble. I mean, this kid's come
in from the academy and just jumps right in there
with all the confidence in the world and already scored
a goal four minutes in last week, was looking for
another one. Well on the hunt last night. So I
do believe that at the end of the day, this
team is built for whoever wants to come to the party.
But to answer your question more technically, Inter Miami is
(19:52):
still the team to beat inter Miami is still that
that focal point. Maybe at the end of the road,
we'll see. Vancouver is a tough side. You see how
Mueller's just playing excellent football, and right now there's this
extra passion happening in Vancouver. They're trying to keep their
team there. So I think in the ecosystem it's still early,
but I would like to say that if we're looking
(20:14):
at it right now on paper, intet to Miami. San
Diego FC are my one and two.
Speaker 3 (20:18):
Adrian Garcia Marquez joining us today San Diego Sports seven sixty.
Speaker 1 (20:21):
Adrian.
Speaker 3 (20:22):
We'll let you go here in a second, but I
do want to hear your thoughts on the WBC the
World Baseball Classic coming up. If anybody is qualified to
be doing WBC games, I feel like it is you, Adrian,
and you do a great job.
Speaker 4 (20:32):
Hi.
Speaker 3 (20:32):
In fact, I ended up watching more of your calls
of the World Series than I did watch in the
English broadcast because I thought you were a little more entertaining.
But what are we thinking about the WBC this year?
You got some favorites.
Speaker 4 (20:44):
Well, look, it's hard to argue with the Dominican Avengers, right,
you know, it kind of just brings us back to
that redeemed team back in ninety eight and the Olympics
when Kobe and Company decided to win back that gold.
It feels like Dominicana is after that top spot, trying
to take it from Japan. They have a squad that's
built from one to nine. I mean, they are gonna
mash the pitching. That's kind of a question mark still
(21:05):
because I think it's happening with a lot of these
teams in the World Baseball Classic. They're not going to
be able to rely on their pitchers all the way through.
Look at the United States having probably arguably the two
best pitchers on Earth, but you know, it's not going
to be a full complement of their talent throughout the tournament.
So it's up for grabs. So I'd like to think that,
I mean, he kind of going into this, they are
definitely the favorite based on that lineup. Again, they are
(21:27):
a bunch of superheroes. Therefore Dominican all the way through
that lineup. But Mexico, I look at them Benji Gil
and I'm still you know, he's our guy, san Diego product,
Castle Park, a lot know all that good. So Benji
Gill deserves an opportunity to manage in Major League Baseball,
and he keeps showing it again. He gets that championship
in Cete Karive and back to the winning ways there
(21:49):
were Chatto's Ekalisco after leading to Montedo's the championships, after
obviously working for the Angels. I thought he was going
to get the job over Phil Nevin, and I thought
maybe he deserved it a little bit more. But at
some point Benji was going to get a chance. Guys
run through the wall for Benji Gill. And that's why
Mexico is going to be dangerous in the World Baseball Classic.
They might not be as star studied as Dominicana, for example,
(22:09):
maybe Avenues, whatever you want to say on paper, but
Mexico has a great collective of fellows, thetos that played
ball that old school way, hit and run a lot
of steels, just baseball, and Japan plays that way as well.
That's why for me, in the last World Baseball Classic,
the championship was the semi final Japan versus Mexico, and
I think that this time around the United States, Dominicana
(22:31):
Mexico for my money right now, just because of the
style that Benji has Mexico playing. They're going to be
right up there with Japan, with Dominican Republican of course
the United States.
Speaker 3 (22:41):
It does feel like Team USA loaded up a little bit.
You got a superstar study cast for Team USA. I
think they get going on Friday against Brazil. What's the
first game you're calling, Adrian, Actually.
Speaker 4 (22:52):
You know what, It's an invite and that way you
guys can enjoy it. I know there's a lot of
Dodger lovers in San Diego. No, just kidding. We have
the Dodgers in and Mexico tomorrow going at it on
Fox de Bortreso, you know, inviting you to that. But
the first official game I have is on Wednesday, and
it's Type pay versus Australia. There's gonna be a lot
of those early on a lot of these countries, but
(23:13):
that's what we love, right More and more countries playing baseball.
Now you're seeing it in Germany, Brazil's in the tournament,
Colombia has come in strong. So the World Baseball Classic
I think has been able to accomplish what they set
out to do, which is involved more countries grow the
game across Planet Earth. With Italy, Israel, you name it.
I mean it's baseball's becoming bigger. Spain, there's a team
(23:35):
in Malagan. It's like it's just incredible to growth the
baseball you know, on planet Earth. But for the World
Baseball Classic, there's gonna be a lot of those few
games early on where we're gonna be up early hours
of the morning as we work our way through. But
then Mexico Great Britain, I have that one on Friday,
and then we're gonna work our way to Mexico, United States.
So it's gonna be a nice, a nice run in
the next couple of weeks. World Baseball Classic, buckle up.
(23:57):
I think it's going to be a dogfight all the
way through with every single nation facing each other, especially
the favorites that I mentioned Dominicana make a United States
and of course Japan.
Speaker 2 (24:08):
Wait ya man, can't wait for it.
Speaker 3 (24:10):
Thank you for your time, Adrian, always appreciate it. You
are the busiest guy in sports, so glad we could
carve out ten minutes of your day.
Speaker 4 (24:16):
No, no, thank you for the invite anytime. And may
the force be with you on Viva San Diego FC.
Speaker 2 (24:22):
Viva San Diego FC.
Speaker 3 (24:23):
I love it, Adrian, Garcia Marquez, their voice of SDFC,
and they had big win last night if you missed
it over Saint Louis to nil. All right at San
Diego Sports seven to sixty quick break here we will
continue on with.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
Some NFL talk on the other side.
Speaker 3 (24:36):
Actually, and when we come back, we will be giving
away a four packet tickets to the San Diego Zeo
Safari Park. Don't go anywhere at San Diego Sports seven sixty.
You're listening live on iHeartRadio app. I see, I see
what you're saying. It's get him in the tournament. Something
can happen.
Speaker 1 (24:50):
Right. They're a hard team to kind of handicap because
you look at him and go they have all this talent.
Speaker 3 (24:57):
Well, if they have a night like Utah State, they
can compete with any that.
Speaker 1 (25:00):
People are critical of the team. They're critical because the
program has set a new standard. They are certainly good
enough to win the Mountain West Conference tournament, but they
put themselves in this predicament where you do have to
win three games in three days and it's a crapshoot.
If you have a bad shooting night, then you're sol.
But do they have the talent to win three games
in three straight days. One hundred percent, all.
Speaker 3 (25:21):
Right, nine to one three text again saying a four
pack for the Michael family would be a huge blessing.
This week, we do have a four pack of tickets
out to the Elephant Valley at the San Diego Zoosa
Fari Park. We're gonna be given those away within the
next seven minutes. We'll say, within the next seven minutes,
those tickets will be in the hands of somebody. If
you want to be you, you just got to keep
listening here for a second, all right. During the commercial break,
Samy and I we were going up and down Team
(25:43):
USA's roster for the WBC, and I believe their first
game is this Friday against Brazil.
Speaker 2 (25:48):
So we'll see how all that shakes out.
Speaker 3 (25:50):
But I can't believe the Team USA roster is not
the runaway favorite here. But I guess that does go
to show how good baseball has gotten throughout the world,
and Team DR is fantastic once again. In fact, Mandy
Machado and Fernando Tazzis Junior have left Padres spring training
to go become a part of Dominican Republic's team. Xander
Bogarts is with the Netherlands. Mason Miller is with the
(26:12):
United States. But those are the four padres who are
competing in this year's World Baseball Classic. But you look
at the starting rotation for Team USA, nasty I, you
could go Scooble, Schemes, Logan Webb and in any order
you want.
Speaker 2 (26:25):
And who's beating those three seriously.
Speaker 1 (26:29):
Outside of Japan because they have Otanimoto in Sasaki. That's
it's the best three in the in the tournament. Now.
The only we were talking about the break. The only
problem if you look at the US team and the
only concern you'd have, they went young. They went Gunner Henderson,
Bobby Witch, Junior, Pete Crah Armstrong. They chokes, they left
(26:51):
They left off your Mookie Bets, your Freddie Freeman, your
guys who have been here before yet.
Speaker 3 (26:56):
Clayton Kershall is a part of the team, which I
don't understand whatsoever he's.
Speaker 1 (27:00):
He's gonna look like a cy Young winner when he
plays Italy.
Speaker 3 (27:02):
Yeah, it's gotta just be for a spot start against
the team they're gonna beat by ten.
Speaker 1 (27:06):
Right, Yes, he's not trust me.
Speaker 2 (27:08):
I mean, I guess.
Speaker 3 (27:09):
Clayton Kershaw's earned it. He's been the best picture of
a generation. He's definitely earned it, but he's he certainly
is not. They're not throwing him out there starting against
the Japanese team.
Speaker 2 (27:17):
Seriously, you look up and down this team.
Speaker 3 (27:18):
It's like Bryce Harper, Aaron Judge, Schooble, Skeens, Logan Web,
Clayton Kershaw.
Speaker 1 (27:24):
Huh what Clayton, He's basically a coach. Honestly, at this point,
I'm fine.
Speaker 3 (27:30):
With if he's the coach team, I'm great with that,
But why the hell is he on the roster?
Speaker 1 (27:35):
I was talking with I was talking last week with Schaeffer,
and because I was thinking it from a positive Podrey
perspective of it's exciting you get to see tatisam A
Shado out there in Bogarts.
Speaker 3 (27:46):
Mason Miller has an opportunity to become an international superstar
with this. Playing four miles per hour in a WBC game.
Speaker 2 (27:52):
Come on.
Speaker 1 (27:52):
And I thought the biggest person or the person that
could benefit the most would be Sander Bogarts because we
know he struggled midolations. I'm going to Padre. He did
have that nice month there. Remember he hit that home
run in Dodger Stadium in the August of last year,
had that nice three three weeks to a month where
he got after it, and maybe they could get him
going in the WBC. Maybe he can kind of start
(28:14):
the season ahead of schedule, knowing he's kind of already
in a rhythm of playing competitive baseball. But John made
the point, are Padre fans in Texas seven zero four
seven zero start your message with a team? Are people
gonna be more mad if he goes out and balls
out for the Netherlands and then you start the season
and it's more of the same.
Speaker 3 (28:32):
Could you imagine Xander goes out for Team Netherlands and
drops like ten bombs during the Yeah, he's like Raiki.
Speaker 2 (28:39):
It would be hilarious.
Speaker 1 (28:40):
It almost puts more pressure on him. But if he's
ever gonna recapture a little bit of what he had,
it's going to be because he maybe got a head
start on people with the WBC playing playing competitive baseball.
It's a we're looking through you know, positive sunglasses there,
but we'll see.
Speaker 3 (28:58):
I actually think this is great for Fernande more than anybody.
If I'm like ranking who this is good for, Like,
think about where Fernando is at his best. It's when
he's in that kind of positive headspace and smiling and
dancing and coming up with big clutch vibes player one percent,
and we kind of lost that last year. Like Poudy,
Fernando is around way too much of last season. So
if he can go out and be awesome for the
(29:20):
Dominican Republic, we know how much he takes pride in
international play. We know what frankly he's risked at times
to play for his international teams or his local teams
during the offseason. If Fernando Tazis Junior can go out
there and ball out for Team d Are and then
just carry that momentum and ride it into another season
with the Padres, I think that's huge and he can
get back to that superstar we all saw when he
(29:40):
was a rookie.
Speaker 1 (29:40):
And I know Kevin Acey talked about teams basically look
at the WBC and go please don't get hurt. I
e Edwin Diaz a couple of years ago, closer for
I blee Puerto Rico and you know, blowszelbow out. He
misses the entire year.
Speaker 3 (29:52):
Which is hugely concerning that Mason Miller is even part
of Team USA, especially if he gets regular work like
if they're relying on him to go three games in
a row as the closer, it's a.
Speaker 1 (30:00):
Problem one hundred. Now, if it concerns more a team
like the Dodgers, I think you're more concerned with because
you have Yamma Moto pitching, you have Shoeotani pitching. You
have a lot of your pitchers already doing a quick
ramp up in spring training and then having to play
competitive baseball and then slowing back down or ramping up again.
It hurts teams that rely more on their pitching staff
(30:22):
who goes versus hitters, because I think hitters at more
it can help because you just get a little bit
of a groove. The chances of you getting hurt as
a hitter are pretty slim to noh, I mean, it happens,
but you're a much greater chance of getting hurt as
a pitcher. But to your point, hopefully Team USA isn't
just exhausting Mason Miller out left and right, making him
throw two or three innings. But if he's just the closer,
(30:43):
he should be fine.
Speaker 3 (30:44):
Also, am I the only one who definitely learns in
er bogarts is from the Netherlands.
Speaker 1 (30:48):
I had no idea about that. Shafer said it last week.
Speaker 3 (30:50):
I thought he was from Ruba. Yeah, I like, and
I'm pretty sure I'm right on that. I don't know
how much he'savy. He's playing for the Netherlands.
Speaker 1 (30:57):
Is this though an Olympics thing where you see people
from Honando Beach and all of a sudden they're like
skiing for China, maybe because they want to make the team.
Speaker 3 (31:05):
It's just when like I saw Manny's name pop up
for teams American Republic, Tatis, I was like, yeah, those
makes sense. I saw Mason Miller pop and I was Netherlands,
XANDERB Netherlands. Is that right?
Speaker 2 (31:17):
I guess it is. I swear I thought he was
from Ruba.
Speaker 1 (31:19):
You bought up this point last week, and I'm curious,
Texas seven zero four seven zero start your mess with
a team? Does this invigorate the US public? Watching public?
Sports watching public? Like the hockey run in the Olympics.
Speaker 3 (31:35):
Let me read what I wrote this morning for the
sports report I did on KGB because I actually thought
it was pretty funny. I thought it was one of
my better ones. But let me see if I could
pull it up. Well, if you've turned the page on
the Olympics, but you're still bustling with national pride for
Team USA sports organizations. You don't have to wait that
long to don the red, white and blue once again
(31:55):
and get violently drunk on your couch while blasting free Bird.
Because the World Baseball Class is here and tm USA
will play for their first game this Friday against Brazil.
I am excited about it, but I will be honest,
I'm almost more excited to watch Team Dominican Republic play
than I watch Team USA play.
Speaker 1 (32:12):
Well, it's it's to answer the question my own question.
Speaker 2 (32:17):
No. The answer is no.
Speaker 1 (32:18):
The Olympics. The Olympics brand itself. People feel very patriotic.
They're watching for two weeks to get to it's a
big event.
Speaker 2 (32:25):
If it's USA versus d R and rooting for USA, right.
Speaker 3 (32:29):
But in the back of my head, I'm also gonna
be saying, but I hope for Nando does something cool and.
Speaker 1 (32:34):
Baseball. The hockey was interesting because why people love that
sport is an Olympic sports. Canada's really good, the Swedes
are really good, the US is really good. Russia obviously
banned from the Olympics. Russia usually very good, so it's
very up in the air the first couple rounds of this.
Italy's not winning. It's like Israel's not winning it. And
(32:54):
you have a lot of countries that are simply the
Netherlands are not going to win it because they don't
unless zand crazy. But if you're I think people will
get really excited if it's Japan US, if it's Japan
Dominican Republic and you're seeing some massive Major League Baseball stars.
If Shoyo Tani's pitching against Fernando Tatis, the baseball watching
(33:16):
public is going to be excited about that.
Speaker 2 (33:18):
That's a fun matchup Dodgers Patres.
Speaker 1 (33:20):
But yeah, I know, I don't think it will capture
the same stigma that the US men's and women's hockey
team did a couple of weeks ago.
Speaker 3 (33:29):
By the way, reading this without proof reading, don't know
if this is true or not. But our buddy so
Cal Jayhawk, let me know Aruba is an island owned
by the Netherlands.
Speaker 1 (33:35):
Shout out to so Cal Jack.
Speaker 2 (33:36):
You learned something new every day. How about that little
geography and world history lesson right here on San Diego
Sports subis.
Speaker 1 (33:42):
Has no idea Ruba was owned by the Netherlands.
Speaker 2 (33:43):
But is am I right in the fact that Xander
is from Aruba? Because I'm pretty sure I am right
on that. I'll do some googling and figure it out.
Speaker 1 (33:49):
Rich Rich MacGuire is also confirming that Aruba is owned
by the Netherlands.
Speaker 2 (33:53):
What is that where Xander's from?
Speaker 1 (33:54):
Do we know that? I don't know.
Speaker 3 (33:56):
We have times for a quick google starch hang on
Xander boga at home or where was Zander Bigart's born?
Speaker 1 (34:02):
Sander Bogart's home? Give his straight n I was right
about that part. He was born in Aruba. Okay, at
least that it drives me nuts. In the Olympics, who
is the one skier for It's literally is like I
live in Redondo Beach and they're competing for China and
raise their entire life in la I'm like, what, Okay,
I get you want to make the team, but what
(34:23):
are we doing here? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (34:24):
In basketball, didn't somebody played for Team USA one year
and then a few years later they played for a
different I can't remember.
Speaker 4 (34:30):
What it was.
Speaker 1 (34:31):
So Joelle Embiid played for America. You could have played
for I believe a couple of France. France and then
another country because you live there and he was a kid.
Joel Embiid's like, I want to win, so we're gonna
join Team USA. But yeah, it's uh, it is funny
how people want I guess they want a better shot
a gold medal, so they go to these countries that
don't have it's not as tough to qualify.
Speaker 3 (34:50):
Well maybe just me, I'd like a better shot at
winning some money. We had a tough weekend on Long Show.
I's a little over three. It was a very Xander
baarts performance.
Speaker 1 (34:59):
I told you it was. There's one for four because
Kavanaugh Moreno did go the distance.
Speaker 2 (35:03):
That wasn't part of log shot.
Speaker 1 (35:04):
Yes it was. I said it was going the distance
and I would take Moreno to win. Moreno did not win.
Speaker 2 (35:09):
The official pick was Moreno and he was a huge over.
Speaker 1 (35:12):
No he was not. He was a two to one
favorite over four and a half rounds. So technically I
went one for four this weekend. And by the way,
as a little defensive of Sammy Long Detroit and Cleveland,
the under was going to hit until they went to
overtime and they hit the over. So in my defense,
we had a couple brutal beats. This weekend.
Speaker 3 (35:33):
Well, I believe it's Michael Boubla who sings a song.
It's a new day and today we'll see if Samuy
Long can make us all some money. That's next on
long Shots. But first, who wants to go to the
Safari Park because we got a four pack of tickets
for you. The brand new Elephant Valley is open at
San Diego Zoo Safari Park. You can get up close
and roam alongside the world's largest land animals all week.
(35:54):
We got chances for you to want a family four
pack of tickets to go see Elephant Valley. The elephants
aren't the only ones who will never for get. Elfin
Valley at the San Diego Zosafari Park.
Speaker 2 (36:02):
Is now open.
Speaker 3 (36:03):
Call eight seven seven seven six seven four seven sixty
for your chance to win a family four pack of tickets.
Long Shots on the other side in San Diego Sports
seven sixty live on my Heart Radio app and text
and also pointing out that she is a super monk.
Speaker 1 (36:16):
That's why I remembered her because she's cute.
Speaker 2 (36:19):
Yeah, I had a boy, Sammy.
Speaker 1 (36:21):
Uh, you're saying, you're saying we got a text life.
You're saying we had a we had a long shot loser,
and then a five eight said, Sammy did call the
Moreno fight. If you didn't parlay that by yourself, then
you're a rookie. See a five eight doesn't just kay,
but one for four is still losing. Listen, you can't.
You don't have a one hundred percent hit rate. There's
(36:41):
not a one hundred percent success rate. I called how
the fight played out. That judges did not go the
way I thought it was how the fight would go out,
except for the winner of the fight, Samsey. I don't
why we thought moral victories. It was an educated guess.
In that Brandon Moreno fighting in his hometown in Mexico City,
there might be a little home cooking on the judge,
just not that they were trying to give him the fight.
(37:03):
But you know when when a hometown fighter, every time
they land a glazing a grazing shot, all of a sudden,
the crowd goes nuts. It can it can change the
way a judge viewses fight.
Speaker 2 (37:12):
Six one nine.
Speaker 3 (37:13):
Can we get Whule Papa log to do log shots
because trailing Sammy is killing my bank roll?
Speaker 1 (37:19):
I should do I want to jump in for a
long shot. He could do a long shot. I'd call
him right now and get him to do a long shot.
Speaker 2 (37:25):
Is your dad into a little sports trading?
Speaker 1 (37:28):
No, he gets mad at me for how much high
sports trade.
Speaker 2 (37:30):
Nice he uh.
Speaker 1 (37:33):
He always says he will. He'll go He'll go in
for like big events, the Masters, super Bowl, NBA Finals,
and we'll go in play a big bet together. But
he's not like gambling on you know, Wizard's Rockets tonight.
Speaker 3 (37:45):
Or tennis on any given day of the week. Hey,
no matter what the event is. Carlos has been very
kind to the bank account. Rich Orberger did do a
story this morning on The Rock Show about the mobile
gambling hotline or whatever that every.
Speaker 1 (38:01):
Ad Reid has at the end of the helpline.
Speaker 2 (38:03):
Yeah, and he was like, so, Futch, have you given
this number of call? And I was like, no, we
call that the quitter line.
Speaker 1 (38:08):
Yeah, well we call that the uninitiated line.
Speaker 3 (38:13):
Look, five bucks here or there is not gonna kill you.
And Sammy has made us all some money. We went
one month earlier this year or maybe at the end
of last year where Sammy made us a bunch of money.
So I'm not complaining about anything that's going on. I
would like to say this, Sammy smash it.
Speaker 4 (38:28):
You looking for some luck.
Speaker 2 (38:30):
I want to win big. He was so money we
don't even know any time to take a chance. Say
that me and his money quit long shots.
Speaker 3 (38:40):
How about a tuessy to get the week started off right?
About a quick little tuesy. Sometimes you just got to see.
Speaker 1 (38:46):
The ball go in.
Speaker 3 (38:47):
You know, he even Tiger goes with slumps of missing putts.
Someti You gotta make the two footers right, okay, and
then we can extend out and pretty soon you'll be
hitting threes like Steph again.
Speaker 2 (38:57):
By the way, the game Steph Curry had the.
Speaker 3 (38:58):
Other day, STEP's been out, he's been hurt. What was
the it was two or three nights ago. Steph Curry
did something amazing.
Speaker 1 (39:06):
Bigger thing is someone else. STEP's been hurt for a
couple of weeks. Maybe I saw some Yeah never mind, Yeah,
we'll figure it out. But yes, Steph Currey's out for
a little bit of time. But all right, we're gonna
do one college basketball pick in one NBA pick. I
A would say to Arizona, fun matchup in the Big
twelve tonight, Arizona seven and a half point home favorites
in this one. I'm gonna ride with the Cyclones now.
(39:29):
The Cyclones coming off a kind of surprising loss on
Saturday to Texas Tech eighty two to seventy three. JT Toppin,
one of the best players in the Big twelve four.
Texas Tech got hurt a few weeks ago, so people
kind of wrote this team off. This Texas Tech team,
they had a lot to play for. On Saturday, got
the win in Ames Arizona dismantled. The Jayhawks kind kind
(39:50):
of figured that was gonna happen. They had a considering
k you beat them, Remember Darren Peterson didn't play, and
it was kind of the big, big Monday matchup, and
then all of a sudden, Council and Company had a
big performance. Arizona came out in the first half really
dominated the Jayhawks. KU came back a little bit, but
then pulled away in the second. Iowa State needs this
game more. We're gonna take the spread seven and a half.
(40:13):
I'm not calling money line because it is a tough
road test for them, but plus seven and a half.
Iowa State does play an excellent brand of defense. They
hold opponents to sixty five points per game. The metrics
are about the same. Arizona average is about five more
points per game. You know, I know Bury's and Bradley
and all them for Arizona, but Iowa State is a
very talented ball club. I think they need this game
(40:35):
more than Arizona does. Could see Arizona a little sloppy
after coming off dis mantling the Jayhawks. Gimme Iowa State
plus seven and a half on the road. All right,
Boston and Milwaukee tonight, we only got a four slate
in the NBA. But the big news Giannis is back tonight.
So Yannis is returning after missing the last five weeks.
(40:56):
The Bucks wanted to shut him down because there's no
real the Bucks aren't making the playoffs, and there's no
real intrigue here or interest for the Bucks to be
playing Giannis where he could potentially get injured. We know
he's had a lot of calf problems over the years.
They're gonna look to trade him in the offseason, but
because he was complaining he wants to be back out there.
He is back tonight. Still, though, give me Boston. You
(41:19):
know what we're gonna say, way him the spread We're
gonna go under two fifteen and a half. Boston plays
a brand of basketball. They shut down the Sixers last night,
absolutely took it to him. I know Joel emb didn't play,
but they really limited the guard spot Maxi and Edgecombe
and Oubre. I mean, there's trendon Watford. There's a lot
of talent on that Sixers team. They took them apart.
They took apart the Lakers a week ago. This Celtics
(41:41):
team people are not giving enough respect to in the
Eastern Conference. Jason Tatum possibly on the men here coming back.
I think the Vegas the odds are going over because
everyone casual betters see, oh Giannis is back, They're gonna
go over two fifteen and a half. Mimia's Kita, former
Utah State player, has done a really good job defensively.
Along with Vucevich coming over, they're not gonna contain Yannis,
(42:03):
but Giannis's first game back, he's gonna be on a
minute restriction, and frankly, the rest of the Bucks roster
is just not that talented.
Speaker 3 (42:10):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (42:10):
They're trying to tank, they're trying to lose. So we're
gonna stay away from the spread because Boston is on
the second height of a back to back, give me
the under two fifteen and a half. This is gonna
be an all defensive game. Not a lot of scores
going for Milwaukee in that elite brand of defense that
the Boston Celtics play.
Speaker 2 (42:26):
So we call a little Monday tuessy my two day
so I was.
Speaker 1 (42:29):
State plus seven and a half going on the road.
They need this win a lot more than the Arizona
Wildcats do. And I like the under two fifteen and
a half. Boston Milwaukee. It's gonna be a defensive slug
fest tonight in Boston.
Speaker 3 (42:41):
Trying to get back to our winning ways a little
bit here tonight with Milwaukee.
Speaker 2 (42:44):
Excuse me, we're gonna see.
Speaker 3 (42:46):
The ball going the hoop, We're gonna make the two footer,
and then we're gonna keep working our way back and
by Friday we'll be cooking up a five Z.
Speaker 2 (42:52):
Don't you worry.
Speaker 1 (42:53):
Every time we start with a tuessy, we build up.
Speaker 2 (42:55):
Things go well. So we'll see if it works for
us tonight one more time.
Speaker 1 (42:58):
I would stay on the road in Arizona plus seven
and a half, get us, give us the cyclones, and
then I like under two fifteen and a half in
the points total for Milwaukee and Boston. That game is
in Milwaukee tonight.
Speaker 2 (43:13):
Perfect.
Speaker 3 (43:13):
Can't wait for it all right, coming up an hour
number two, there's been a bunch of NFL news if
you haven't noticed, there's trades going on in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (43:20):
The Chiefs are clearing up some more rooms.
Speaker 3 (43:21):
So we'll get to it all in the second hour,
as well as gets you some Padres baseball notes. Now
that three or four key pieces have left the team
for the WBC, plenty still to come here on San
