Speaker 1 (00:00):

it's time to enter the fletch zone.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
In San Diego Sports seven to sixty.

Speaker 3 (00:11):
It is our number two here on San Diego Sports
seven sixty. Ben Fletcher, Samuel Long with you till two o'clock.
We'll jump off, John Shafer will jump on. Coach Kintara
coming up in thirty minutes.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
We'll talk about gods with the coach. Can't wait for that.

Speaker 3 (00:24):
By the way, text line YouTube chat seven zero four
seven zero. Start your message with the word team looking
for a secret golf course. Not a secret, but a
sleeper golf course in Sandy. Got a bunch rolling in
right now, tons of them. Sixty one nine Carlton Oaks
in Santia.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Played a million time six.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
So it's not technically in San Diego, but journey at
Pachanga's hands down my favorite course in San Diego worth
the drive in price.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Actually played there too, very cool. Golf course six point
eight four is just making up stuff.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
Six to one nine Santy Cijo golf Course sixteen to
fifteen holes are technically in Mexico's and bring your passport.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
Uh I'm down forty four saying secret golf spot just
reverse driving range from the parking.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
Lot into sea World. That's the for a four.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
We don't do stuff like that. That's very entourage with
them off their back, Yeah, the back patio seven six.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
Oh.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
Actually two spots I have not played. Erawood golf course
in ocean side. I've heard that's fantastic. And then Goat Hill,
which I haven't even heard of. I apologize, is a
short and fun course, also an ocean side. Uh. The
golf course that boomers in Claremont, that would be mini golf.

Speaker 1 (01:25):
Uh, Steven says. Balbo Park golf course.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
Balbo Park is fantastic, man, I've played there a thousand
times since I've moved to San Diego.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Because you get in with the resident ID card, which
is nice.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
You got to I told you to break you gotta
you gotta play the RBN. Man, it's a great It's
a great course.

Speaker 4 (01:40):
Up.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
I actually have not played that course. My dad has.
He loved it.

Speaker 3 (01:43):
He had a great side course seniors tournament there. But
I'm not looking for Tory. I love Tory. I'm not
looking for Madaris. I've played the big spots here. I'm
looking for a sleeper pick. For a group of buddies,
who's coming to town. I played the beginning of April.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
I played Red Hawk. So my uncle started thinking he
was good at golf because he had a couple of
rounds together. So he's like, we're gonna play in Temecula
Red Hawk. I was like, dude, I'm not good enough
to play Red Hawk. I'm more of a grip and
rip kind of guy, and let's just have some beers
and have some fun because I'm not talented enough at
golf to be really counting score. He's like, no, no, no,

(02:16):
We're gonna go. I am not kidding you. I think
I lost two packs of balls at Red Hawk. That's
where like the like the PGA, they like practice hardest
course I've ever played in my life. I was like,
never again, dude.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
I had a very similar experience, like two weeks before
Farmer's Insurance Open, we got to play it at Torry Wines,
and I didn't even like not even hitting bad shots,
you lose balls because they just go to the rough
and they're gone forever.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
Yeah, you think like I thought I hit some good shots.
It's like, oh that felt good. And then I'm like
in bushes and.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
Another pick for goat hill on here. I think I
got to try it out. Man Rich Maguire, Admiral Baker
North Course true, San Diego. Rich, that's the military course
in Mission Valley, Yes, sir, and it's opposite of Tory Pine.
So tory Pine's course is better than the North course.
Admiral North Course is better than the South course. Jay
Silves Mission Trails on Lake Murray played it, loved it.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Good course. Sante has a great one with.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
A five eight. The Vineyard at Escandio that's a great
one as well.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
I don't think I've played that.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
That's a great I played that course.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
The one in Carlsbaud that I love is the Crossings,
but keep them coming in. I would love this. I
need to find one that I have not played yet.
For this group of guys who's coming in early April.
We do this trip every year. It's debauchery. It's terrible.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
I may miss a Friday show, Sammy, I apologize.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
I got it locked out for us.

Speaker 3 (03:30):
But it is a fun weekend every time these guys
come to town. All right, our two here on San
Diego Sports seven to sixty. We're gonna get to the
padres in just a little bit so thinking about the
starting five rotation and who that four or five six
is going to be for the Padres if they do
start the year, which I think they should, in a
six man rotation, we'll take a look in just.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
A little bit on what those would be.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
But I do want to stick with the NFL for
just a second here, because why are we letting them
get away with it? The Kansas City Chiefs have two
first round picks this year, and it's making me lose
my mind. But Sammy as a Chiefs fan, as a
Chief stan as someone who believes wholeheartedly that the Chiefs
will be right back to their era of dominance coming
up this year after just a speed bump last year.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
Oh just a minor blip on the radar.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
Two first round picks. Where do you want to see
him go? What are the biggest needs for this Kansas
City Chiefs team?

Speaker 1 (04:16):
We all serious is the team does have a lot
of holes. Running Back is a major hole. Right tackle
needs to be filled, Quarterback, tight end, they need to
find someone to see Kelsey pass rusher. Pass rusher and
running back are the two biggest holes. You need a
safety and now you need a corner, although the Chiefs
actually have some young corners come up the pipeline and
Christian Fulton and Noel Williams who really played well down

(04:37):
the stretch of the season last year. Look, I said
it earlier, Trent McDuffie is going to be a baller
for the Rams. I get why the Rams did it.
He's a superstar. He can play in and out. He's
even better as a slot corner than he is as
an outside corner, and he's a damn good outside corner.
So hats off to the Rams. But Brett Viech strikes again.
I mean, look what he did. He learned from Jerry

(04:59):
Jones lastyear. Is Trent McDuffie. Michael Parsons, No, but he's
that next tier, a star, an impact player. You did
it right, befo a free agency on Monday, right before
the draft. It's crazy. I was talking to my dad
this morning. I literally twenty minutes for it happened. It
was a random thing. It's like, if they're gonna trade
Trent McDuffie, I hope they do it this weekend because

(05:19):
waiting till the summer to try to keep battling on
a contract situation, it's not coming to fruition. You end
up trading him and then it gives you picks for
next year, but not for this year. The Chiefs are
in the middle of a retool, not a rebuild in
my opinion, and they can do that on the fly.
Now they have nine picks in this year's draft, they
can really go do some stuff. And Trent McDuffie, hats

(05:40):
off to him. Great Kansaity chief gonna be great for
the Rams. But the Chiefs got to kind of get
some influx of young talent here and not just keep
paying out big contracts left and right.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
It kind of makes me sick to my stomach that
the Rams would do this, although the Rams I do
think set themselves up in a position to where right
now I would have the Rams as my Super Bowl favorite.
I think top to their roster has the least amount
of holes on it, and Trent McDuffie is fantastic. It's
what the Rams were missing last year. Had they had
Trent McDuffie in that NFC Championship game, they probably win Seahawks.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
I do think they win.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
They stick him on JSN the entire game.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
Exactly right in JASN May have been the MVP of
that game, so you kind of look at where the
Rams struggled. This is a very smart move by less Sneed. Unfortunately,
it does strengthen up the Kansas City Chiefs. So maybe
not next year, but in the years in the future
when you think about Super Bowls down the line, this
is setting up the Chiefs for another window of excellence
if they can hit on draft picks, if they can
hit on draft.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
Yes, they got to hit on draft picks. But again,
when you take a team you want you do want
them to go running back first. No, not necessarily if
Love is there, and I don't want them to trade up.
If they have to trade up to get Love to
jump the Saints or somebody, I'm out on that. If
they get him at nine, you're getting a superstar running
back in my estimation, I'm fine with that. But getting

(06:53):
Kenneth Walker a traves etn and free agency for eight
million dollars a year and going to get a pass
rusher is probably the smarter for the Chiefs for sure.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
All Right, let's get to the Big three here.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
Of our number two, all sorts of teams in the
NFL make it moves today. I'm sure we'll hear some
of that coming up in just the second Sammy, go ahead,
smash it.

Speaker 4 (07:11):
Is here. Ready to go back to the office and
knock the socks off your friends, I mean co workers.

Speaker 2 (07:17):
It's time from the top stories of the day. It's
a big three, three, three, six one five. I don't golf,
but I deliver out in magic.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
I don't know that word. Golf club at East Lake
and they have some hotties working there.

Speaker 1 (07:30):
So six to one five.

Speaker 3 (07:34):
By the way, Carlton Oaks is now famous on TikTok's
TikTok because of their barquart girls who make drinks out
on the course. Listen, TikTok savvy. Yeah, Carlton Oaks is
like one of the most followed golf accounts in the world.

Speaker 1 (07:46):
Six to one nine Welkes Resort. I play that. That's
a great that's a great, great spot. Just a nine
hole course, right, Yeah, that's a little warm up.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
That's a little warm up. Two courses in one day.

Speaker 1 (07:57):
By the way, before we get to the big three,
did you see the CBS crew They asked the CBS
golf crew, Jim Nansen everybody about what defines a good golfer,
Like if you call yourself a good golfer what they
say and everyone said, you have to shoot perennially in
the eighties. If you crack below ninety, you're sitting there.

(08:18):
You can call yourself a good golfer.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
See, okay, that's probably like a fifteen sixteen handicap. Someone
who's or no, that's better, that's probably a ten handicap.
Someone who's in the eighties all the time lowing right.
I think if you're between eighty and eighty six on
a consistent basis, you can call yourself a good golfer.

Speaker 1 (08:40):
Because I've had friends who shoot one hundred but hit
a couple of good shots, like I'm a good player.
I'm like slow down by.

Speaker 3 (08:45):
Yeah, and the people who talk about themselves when they golf,
like I will be very upfront and honest.

Speaker 2 (08:49):
I love golf.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
I think it's one of the most fun things you
could possibly do with a free weekend. I've been under
ninety once in my life. I've been under one hundred
maybe three times in my life. By my normal round
is probably between ninety nine and one oh six. That's
where I sit, depending on golf courses. But I'm not
a good golfer. But I have a lot of fun golfer.
And I think that's the part where golf gets a

(09:10):
little stuffy is people need to understand that it is
supposed to be a fun activity. And for the people
who are also like, oh, if you don't shoot less
than ninety, you can't come on my course.

Speaker 2 (09:19):
Get the hell out of here. Yeah, and shut up.

Speaker 1 (09:21):
Everyone thinks our tiger.

Speaker 2 (09:22):
Shut up.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
Let's head of the NFL. So, as we were talking
about a little bit earlier, Stefad Diggs released from the
New England Patriots. Per Jordan Schultz, the Pats are quote
all in on a star wide receiver Alec Pierce among
the names that they're prepared to spend.

Speaker 2 (09:39):
Big arms a star wide receiver.

Speaker 1 (09:41):
Well that's my first thing. Alec Pierce, Sud's a good
deep ball threat, which could be good with drag May
because drag May Thild is a pretty good deep ball.
But let's just say they get a big name receiver,
whether that's Aj Brown, Let's say Alec Pierce to star.
Where do you see New England in the AFC next year?
Because it I mean, they made the Super Bowl. But
right now, and I know people are gonna come at
me for this. I don't have been making the playoffs

(10:03):
when you play the easiest schedule in thirty years and
have one of the easiest roads to a super.

Speaker 3 (10:08):
Bowl twenty six years, twenty six years, come on, give
them a little credit.

Speaker 1 (10:12):
I mean, the Chargers no offensive line Houston, their entire
offense was hurt, and Boonix wasn't playing for Denver. I
don't think. I think the Bills are running that division.
I don't think they make the playoffs next year.

Speaker 2 (10:22):
I think there's a shot they missed the playoffs next year.
They're on the bubble.

Speaker 3 (10:25):
I would consider the New England Patriots right now. Now
that's considering Drake may plays the same he did this year,
which was really really good. If he takes a bump
all of a sudden, the Patriots are a real problem.
The defense was pretty damn good all year long, even
through the postseason.

Speaker 2 (10:39):
Like there's a reason CJ.

Speaker 3 (10:41):
Shroud handed the ball off to the Patriots five times
in that game. It felt like because the defense is
very good for New England, and I think they got
a great head coach. I don't know if I'm as
down on them as you are, but I don't think
that they're a lock for the postseason as of right now.
Now they get AJ Brown and Mike Rabels is the
one coach who seemingly has been able to work with
AJ Brown and get the best.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
Out of him.

Speaker 3 (11:00):
That's a dangerous, scary team because they got an excellent
run attack. Travon Henderson's going to be better this year.
If you add a wide receiver, give Drake May a
little more confidence. Yeah, I think the division around him
gets better. But I could see the Patriots getting right
back into the postseason.

Speaker 1 (11:14):
I just feel like with New England, the best thing
they have going for him is they get to play
the Jets in Miami four times a year. Really, like,
what is the calling card? I guess you could look
at it that they didn't have a star receiver and
made the Super Bowl. I just if the Chargers had
an offensive line, if Stroud dosn't throw four interceptions, if
Bonix is playing, I know they're all ifs. I just
I don't see. I don't see that team actually getting there.

(11:36):
So we'll see where they're at next year, all right.
Sam Amico reports that there is a ninety nine percent
chance that Lebron will return to the Calves next year
on a mid level exception, so he's making like ten
million a year. Amko reports for the Cleveland Cavaliers. If
Lebron is willing to take a pay cut, should he
want to go to Cleveland, stay with the Lakers, or

(11:56):
go somewhere else.

Speaker 3 (11:57):
I think he needs to get the hell away from
the Lakers for both sides benefit. I think the Lakers
are better off without him. He's better off without the Lakers.
A reunion with Cleveland makes too much sense. And I
think if Lebron, who I believe is very obsessed with Lebron,
wants his proper farewell tour, Cleveland seems like the right

(12:18):
spot to do it. Now, knowing Lebron the way we
have over the years, does he sound like the type
of person who would take a pay cut.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
That's the biggest question.

Speaker 1 (12:25):
Well, that's what's funny is they've talked about him taking
a pay cut for the last three years now, It's
ne never happened. Now. The only way I see him
coming back to la is if they pull off the
honest deal, if they have Giannis, Reeves and Luca. If
you're Lebron and you want to take less money and
be a part of the team. That team would be disgusting.

(12:45):
I agree with you. I don't think he's coming back
to LA I think both. I think he's probably done
with the Lakers. The Lakers have signaled they're kind of
out of the Lebron business. Want to restart this rebuild.

Speaker 3 (12:54):
Don't you think he wants his version of Kobe's farewell
tour where every team around the league celebrates him.

Speaker 1 (13:00):
This is why he's not retiring of this year.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
He's gonna Cleveland makes too much sense.

Speaker 1 (13:04):
Cleveland makes too much sense. The one team I would say, though,
to watch out for. He's always talked about playing the Garden,
playing for the Knicks. The Knicks need a number two.
They have a lot of talented players. Jalen Brunton's a
star Towns. You can debate. Star sometimes plays like a star,
but Mitchell Robinson, McHale Bridges, it's a lot of solid
There's a lot of solid players on that team. But

(13:25):
I don't think they have the star power to get
over the hump this year. I could see Lebron checking
in there for next season.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
All right, let's squeeze one more in here, Sammy.

Speaker 1 (13:33):
All right, let's head to March Maddness kind of an
interesting twist on it. So the NCAA is requiring there
during March Madness for them to have availability reports. So
for people, there's a big deal for betters. In college
football and basketball, teams are not required to give injury
reports for many years now, so a lot of times

(13:56):
you turn on the TV and all of a sudden,
your star wide receiver, star guard is not playing because
of a personal reason. They've always claimed privacy issues. The
nc double A is making them have waivers come out,
our reports come out about who will be playing and
who won't. Reaction do you like this going forward for
Marsh Madness?

Speaker 3 (14:13):
So I think this is a big nothing burger, I
really do. And this year, at least in the Mountain West,
for football and basketball, these have been required. They've been
required I think three days out before games you have
to list an initial report, and then the day of
the game you have to list another one. But what
seems have done you don't have to put why or
how and where. In the NFL, it's like someone's questionable

(14:36):
with an ankle injury, right, But you can't just say
personal right, And you don't have to say anything in
nc DOUBLEA at this point. So for football and basketball,
at least in the Mountain West, this year, we've had
these availability reports.

Speaker 2 (14:47):
I'll give you the example.

Speaker 3 (14:48):
Yesterday, the final availability report came out for San Diego State.
BJ Davis, Miles, Bird, and Elz Harrington were all listed
as questionable. All three of them played head zero minute restrictions.
So I think that teams a have an easy way
around this list. Everybody is questionable. You don't have to
say why or how mb the punishments on there are.
If the guy doesn't end up playing, you can have
like a thirty thousand dollars fine set against you. And

(15:10):
that's for the NCAA tournament this year. List everybody is questionable,
then you you have.

Speaker 2 (15:15):
No problem just getting away with it.

Speaker 1 (15:17):
That's what they're gonna do. They shouldn't be allowed to
do that. With all the corruption that has happened in
the NBA in college basketball, college sports has been massive
gambling probes because of small schools, people not paying attention.
The guys are getting paid now.

Speaker 3 (15:31):
Fresno State's entire team got kicked off last year right there.

Speaker 1 (15:35):
For I mean, imagine betting if you whether you're a better,
whether you're against gambling. It's a part of sports. Now
on the there's scrolls, there's whole shows. We do a
segment every day at twelve forty five where we talk
about gambling. It's a part of the sport. And when
you have casual fans who maybe maybe don't tune into
a lot of the college basketball regular season, but are

(15:56):
putting their brackets together betting on games, and then all
of a sudden, our player is out for personal reasons.
I liked that they're doing this. I think they should
make them be specific. I heard this when guys weren't
getting paid, so the whole privacy concerns, I'm sorry. Darren
Peterson and Cameron Boozer and Aja Debondstar are millionaires. I mean,
up and down the roster, even not even top guys

(16:18):
in the NBA draft are making a ton of money.
You should be able to have to disclose on an
injury report who's playing and who isn't to help stop
some of the corruption going on with gambling.

Speaker 3 (16:28):
And just saying who's in who's And there's three designations
you can do. It's healthy, questionable, or out, and if
you're out is wrong, you get fined. If they're not
listed as questionable and they don't play, you get fined.
So the way to do it list everybody as questionable,
they play anyways, you're fine and you don't get fined.

Speaker 1 (16:47):
I wish they would crack down even harder on it.

Speaker 3 (16:49):
The only way to make this crack down a little
harder is to make it like the NFL, where there's
an injury designation and you have to list what the
injury is, which I don't know that they'll ever do
that with college kids, at least not now until they're
designated as professionals, which is very very soon, and have contracts.
This isn't gonna happen, and until another thing. I've been
calling for some sort of other side. Right, so you
have the NC double A, They go on question you

(17:10):
need to have a players association.

Speaker 1 (17:12):
You need a body that sanctions that, that regulates all
the contracts and holds players two contracts in NCUBAA basket.

Speaker 3 (17:19):
There needs to be a collective bargaining agreement between the
NC DOUBLEA and some NITA made up of representatives for
the players. Otherwise all this stuff is going to continue
to happen, all right, quick break here on the other side,
let's get into the padres. They're starting five, they're starting six.
What it's going to be to start the year. We'll
get you an update here on the other side of
San Diego Sports seven sixty live on iHeartRadio app Sammy,
somehow your Chiefs fans have infiltrated the YouTube. They have

(17:41):
our buddy fridge Watchers saying, Sammy, we making moves. Chris
Jones is going to restructure, opening up twenty two and
a half million dollars of cap space.

Speaker 4 (17:48):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (17:48):
Juwan Taylor officially cut today after they'm talking about it
last week. Fridge Watcher knows. Listen, you can clown the
Chiefs today. I'm telling you this team is going to
look completely different in a month half.

Speaker 2 (18:00):
I would like to claim the Chiefs today.

Speaker 3 (18:02):
By the way, text US seven zero four seven zero
story message with the word team. If you have a
sleeper golf course in San Diego that I probably haven't
played yet. I got a group of guys coming in
about a month that I'm making tea times for now
and I want.

Speaker 2 (18:15):
Something I haven't played before. So I've played a lot
of them.

Speaker 3 (18:17):
But if you got one that's a hitting gym, let
me know and by the way, Boomers and Claremont no
longer exists turned into a Maza dealership. So whoever sent
that one in rest in peace? ALRP to Boomers man
Boomers is Boomers? Was the spot were like first eights
at a mini golf course or something.

Speaker 2 (18:33):
I'm telling you. You never know. Am I supposed to
let her win? Or am I supposed to assert the fact?

Speaker 1 (18:38):
You want a girl that's competitive?

Speaker 2 (18:41):
It is mini golf.

Speaker 1 (18:42):
Yeah, this whole letting people win stuff.

Speaker 2 (18:45):
That's what's my root in this country, right Sammy.

Speaker 1 (18:47):
My grandpa had the greatest line of all time because
he'd always he always beat us in board games and my, my,
my parents, and people will get mad at him, be like,
oh why are you Why are you beating up on kids?
He goes, if you're old enough to play, you're old
enough to lose. Lived my life by that mindset. Yeah,
I still to this day.

Speaker 3 (19:04):
Don't think my brother, who literally holds the junior college
record in California for most threes made in a single game,
or me have ever beat my dad in a game
of horse.

Speaker 1 (19:12):
Exactly because why would he let you win? Then you
hold that over he gets to hold that over you
your whole life.

Speaker 2 (19:16):
This son of a gun. His mid range game is unreal.

Speaker 3 (19:18):
Dude, from fifteen feet out fifteen feet in, Steve can't miss.
His name is not even Steve can't miss from fifteen
feet in, And so he'll just make sure he's the
first one shooting in a game of horse and he
won't miss for thirty shots.

Speaker 1 (19:29):
I mean it is a low bar though, because we
did see you and Riffkin play, So.

Speaker 3 (19:32):
No, that's fair for me. But my brother is actually
like a nails lights out shooter. That's what he made
his whole entire career on ad a full ride scholarship
in college to go shoot threes and be that the
Kyle Korver of a college basketball team. That was his game.
And I don't think he's ever beat my dad either.
It is San Diego Sports seven sixty. Me and Samy
got you till two o'clock. Coach Cantarra's coming up in
about five minutes. I did want to squeeze this in though.

(19:53):
So the Padres start of the season, they actually have
a lot of rest and they have a lot of
days off, which is a huge benefit for this team
who's hoping that a lot of guys are going to
be healthy by the time the season rolls around.

Speaker 2 (20:04):
The question is do you still go with a six
man rotation?

Speaker 1 (20:07):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (20:08):
I think so too, Sammy, I really do.

Speaker 3 (20:09):
And while Nick Pavetta should be fresh in coming into
this year healthy and you hope that he's the ace
that he was at times for you last year, Michael
King coming off a season riddled with injury, Joe Musgrove
didn't pitch it all last year. You got question marks
with everybody else, Randy Vasquez, Walker Buehler, whoever it may be,
in the last spots in your rotation, they're all question marks.
So for the weakest part of this Padres team this year,

(20:31):
which I do believe is the starting rotation, why not
make it open tryouts the first month of the season,
first month and a half of the season, when there is.

Speaker 2 (20:39):
A lot of rest.

Speaker 3 (20:40):
I don't care if guys are only pitching once every
ten days, why not see who the best possible starting
five is and you have open tryouts during the first
part of the season to do that.

Speaker 1 (20:50):
Well, and even if for the potteries to get to
where they want to go, those three have to be elite.
Nick Povetta has to have the exact same season he
had last year. Michael King has to be get back
to what we saw two years ago from him.

Speaker 2 (21:04):
He was, you know, have the opening day start last
year he was.

Speaker 1 (21:06):
Fantastic, and last year kind of up and down, marred
by a lot of injuries. And then with Joe Musgrove,
Joe Musgrove has to be brought along slowly. If Joe
Musgrove is out here throwing bulk innings by the time
we get to June and they're already over the count
where they want him to be, that's a massive problem
because Joe Musgrove is kind of the sneaky ace card.

(21:28):
The Potterys have is they could slowly ramp him up
and then kind of deploy him in the postseason. If
they're all three healthy. That's a pretty dangerous rotation going
into the postseason. But it's a big if because as
we know, starting pitchers get hurt all the time, and
so Randy Vaskus his credit is Randy Vasquez a postseason pitcher? No,
but he did. Yeah, he gives up too much contact,

(21:50):
too many runners on but he did have the Potterreys
eat a lot of games through the summer last year,
and he can get you to where you need to go. Bewer,
you need Vasquez, some of these guys her mom Marques
to be eating up some innings for you in the
middle of the summer. And Craig Stammon cannot fall in
love with his great bullpen if he starts going to

(22:12):
the bullpen early like Mike Shildt did last year when
they had this unbelievable bullpen and all of a sudden,
if guys went five innings, it was like a parade
was being thrown starters because every night the bullpen was
being taxed. That's a bad sign for the potterre's going forward.

Speaker 2 (22:26):
What's probably a bad sign.

Speaker 3 (22:27):
And I just kind of did this in my head
while Sammy was talking, was if you were to power
rank the Padres pitchers you trusted the most in terms
of starters, Randy Vasquez might be my number two behind
Paveda or King behind Pavetta, of trusting the most heading
into this year, because we don't know what King is
going to be coming off of injury. We don't know
what Muscove was going to be coming off of another
injury and a full year of not pitching.

Speaker 2 (22:47):
If you watch Joe Muskove today. He didn't look that great.

Speaker 1 (22:50):
My only concern with Nick Pavetta, and I hope I'm wrong.
Everyone seems to have forgotten about the report the Patterreys
were shopping him right before they re signed Michael King
and up signing Canning and Bueller and all these guys.
Is it just because they they don't think he's going
to be here next year? Or is he been trying
to sell high right? Did you get the best version

(23:10):
of Nick Pavetta? And they know that, so they're trying
to flip in for something now, but realizing the lack
of depth on the starting rotation, you need him to
be Nick Pavetta this year.

Speaker 3 (23:21):
Let's get into it a little more with Coachkintara talking
Padres on the other side at San Diego Sports seven sixty.

Speaker 2 (23:26):
You're listening live on Myheart radio app.

Speaker 3 (23:28):
Coach, did you get some catch any of Joe Musgroves
start here today against Great Britain?

Speaker 4 (23:33):
I certainly did. I was looking forward to it, and
you know it, you know something to build on. Obviously
it wasn't perfect. He got taken out there in the
first inning after only retiring one batter and one run,
in the base loaded and then they brought him back
in in the second inning. Looked much better. And then
I got a couple of outs in the third inning,

(23:55):
and then they took him out. But when you look
at his total line, two indis five hits, one run,
the walk, three strikeouts, a wild pitch, a pitch time violation.
They were hoping to throw fifty five pitches, ended up
letting them go for sixty. Ball strike rature was not
good thirty six to sixty, But you know what, something

(24:15):
to build on. And you know, I think Joe will
probably assessed that saying, hey, I felt good out there.
The fastball was good. In fact, he was throwing harder
today than he did in twenty twenty four. But I
think everybody and I know I kept saying it all
the time. He was never right in twenty twenty four.
But he was hitting ninety five consistently today and the

(24:36):
one thing that it got sharper as he went on.
But something that he's going to probably, you know, deal
with anytime he come back from Tommy John. And that's command.
The command of the breaking ball isn't where he'd like
it right now. I know he was working on some things.
His mechanics working towards the plate, not spinning off towards
first base looked a little bit better. And I've been

(24:56):
watching him throw some bullpens on tape that I've looked
at people have sent me from Arizona and definitely doing
a better job of working to the plate. He always had,
especially on the slider, a tendency to spin off that
slider towards first base, and today it looked like he
really had a good direction to home plate. So that's good.

(25:16):
We'll see how he feels tomorrow and the next day.

Speaker 1 (25:19):
Coach. With the WBC getting going here, and you know
Bogart's Tatisa Machado all heading for as hitters. Who does
that benefit the most? Will this benefit any of them?
Is it? Does it take away? In your estimation? Can
can guys get on a heater in the WBC and
a carry into the season. How do you kind of
view the tournament itself?

Speaker 4 (25:39):
Well, I think those guys are going to be fine.
I'm a little bit more concerned about the guys that
are trying to make this ball club right now. You know,
what's the status of Ty France and Miguel Andrew harr
I think Cassianos, even though he hit in one fifty
right now, I had a good day yesterday. I'm not
really worried about Casianos. He still got a few good

(25:59):
years left. I think last year he hit seventeen home runs. Yeah,
hitter friendly ballpark. But I think he's going to be fine.
But you know, I think that the final roster spot
is going to be very, very interesting now that they
signed Alex dugu who, by the way, has been working
out down there in the minor leagues. I was watching
him take a little batting practice today, and you know,
I don't know if he's going to be ready by

(26:21):
opening day. If he is, that may move you know,
somebody else down to the minor leagues, or maybe a
veteran that would get released. Now we've got to remember
when you got you know, all this logs on at
first base, and it seems like we have one right now.
Some of those veteran guys, any of those veterans that
aren't going to make the team, they may ask for

(26:41):
the release. So you got to really be careful on
who you're keeping. I think one of the battles nobody's
really talking about is, you know, if you keep a
sun Moon song on the big league roster, and I
think that's in question right now. Who who's going to
be the guy that's going to play shortstop, Because whenever
you have a utility guy, he's got to be able

(27:03):
to play shortstop. And unless you want to roll the
dice and Bogarts went down, you throw krona Worth over
there to you know, the remainder of the game, and
then the next day you bring up Mason McCoy. But normally,
when you keep a utility guy, he can play the
middle dfield, and so that's going to be interesting as well.

Speaker 3 (27:21):
Oh no, they got a pretty good shortstop out in
the outfield right now, a couple of them.

Speaker 2 (27:25):
Actually.

Speaker 3 (27:25):
Jackson Merril's a pretty good shortstop too. Maybe maybe this
is a year where some changes happen, coach Sarah shorting
us here on San Diego Sports seven six. So we
can all hope right to see Fernando back making plays
at short I don't think it's ever gonna happen, But coach,
what do you think about four or five and potentially
six in the rotation? Maybe Randy Vasquez has earned it
based off of what he did last year, and people

(27:45):
are excited about him this year. But where do you
like four, five, and six and the Padres rotation.

Speaker 4 (27:51):
Well, you know, let's start with drill right now at
number three. You know what he did today was you know,
he got out there and like I said, we'll see
how he feels tomorrow next day. I don't know if
he'll be built up enough in time for you know,
that first series against Detroit. I really don't know. So
there you got to look and Fasquez I think has

(28:13):
earned he's pitching today. Actually, I think when we came on,
I think he'd already pitching and in a third and
was doing a good job today. And he's a much
better pitcher than he was two years ago when the
Padres brought him in. I made great strides last year,
and I would expect him to continue to get better
with more experience and a little more velocity and challenging hitters,

(28:34):
maybe a little bit more. I don't really know what
to make out a walker, Bueler. We're going to see
him tomorrow. We'll see, you know how he's coming alonger
Mond Marquez didn't look good in his first spring out
in the first and he's second and he looked much better.
Marco Gonzalez, the left hander who missed all last year
with flexor tendon surgery. He's not looked good at his

(28:57):
command hadn't been good, and you know, I think that
that I'm not sure he'll be around when the cutdown
day comes. And you know, the other guy that we're
not going to see until maybe late April, may maybe
even June, depending on how that Achilles deal Griffin Canning.
But Kane's been throwing the ball well in Bullpen's the
problem with him. They don't really want him to field

(29:19):
or cover first base right now coming off of that Achille,
So they're going to tread very lightly with Griffin Canning.
But the other guy that's pitched well and I don't
think he's really in the mix right now for a
spot in the rotation. He was last year but he
isn't this year. But he's pitched very well in spring,
and he pitched very well out of the bullpen last
year is Kyle Hart, that left Candor they brought in

(29:40):
from the KBO. He's pitched really well this spring.

Speaker 1 (29:44):
Coach, when you look at the WBC, how do you
stack the American lineup? Do you think the US should
be the favorite to win this thing, or should Japan repeat.

Speaker 4 (29:54):
Well, here's the way I look at it, Sammy. I
think United States, this team they've got is unbelievable. I
watched their exhibition game yesterday against the Giants, and granted
the Giants didn't have a lot of their big boys
in the lineup, but I mean they got bludds and
they ended up playing ten innings yesterday and it was
fifteen to one, and they had nineteen hits. I mean

(30:16):
they got a lot of I mean, they unbelievable. And
then you take a look at who they're playing in
their bracket, You take a look at who their starters
are going to be. I mean, Trek Scouble is going
to pitch one game, and you got course, you got schemes,
Logan Web's going to throw the first game, and then
the young kid from the Mets of McLean will all
round it out. But I mean, can you imagine going again, Well,

(30:39):
we're going to see that with the Padres on opening day,
we'll probably get Trek Scouble followed by maybe framber Valdez,
followed by maybe Justin Berlander for that Padre first series,
but and coming out of the gate having a hit
against Logan web Scooble schemes and McLean. Wow, those teams
are going to be in trouble. But you know, I
think the United States people saying their favor don't rule

(31:01):
out the Dominican, don't rule out Venezuela. And I'll be
honest with you, Japan is so consistent. I think, unto
you can show you can beat Japan. Now we know
that Otani's not gonna pitch, but that Japan Ball club
they may not have the power that some of the
other teams have, but don't shut your toolbox on those guys.

(31:22):
They play good, sound, fundamental baseball. They stay within themselves.
Their pitchers normally throw a lot of strikes. They allowed
that defense to work and the United States should, I think,
win it. But we'll wait and see.

Speaker 3 (31:37):
Coach Cantara joining us today here on San Diego Sports
seven sixty. Coach, when you look at the success that
the Padres had in the regular season last year on
their way to the postseason, it probably doesn't happen without
Gavin Sheets. Now you have to almost expect that Fernando
Tazis junior Manny Machado's.

Speaker 2 (31:52):
Andaner Bogarts Jackson Merril.

Speaker 3 (31:53):
We'll put up numbers of some sort if the Padres
already gets to the postseason here, But who is going
to be that guy who's going to be the having
sheets this year where the Padres maybe got the postseason
because of him.

Speaker 4 (32:05):
Well, I think you got to look out in left
field with Ramon Loreano. He had twenty four home runs,
but he didn't hit all those whole runs with the Padres.
Imagine you know, if he could hit all twenty four
with the Padres this year, that's gonna give you a
big boost. I mean, think about our outfield last year
on opening Day we had Jason Hayward followed by Brandon
Lockridge out there in left field. From endous upgrade, this roster,

(32:28):
I don't care who ends up making it out of camp.
This roster will be better than last year's opening day roster.
And I'm gonna tell you this, they're gonna be stronger
behind the plate as far as offensively. For means a
good defensive catcher who can hit Campasano's gotten better behind
the plate, Hopefully he's gonna get an opportunity he'll swing
the bat. So offensively, you're gonna get more out of

(32:51):
your catching corps this year. Definitely get more out of
your left fielders for one hundred and sixty two games.
You hope Jackson Merrill can stay healthy. He was three
different times last year. You know, he had the hamstring
and then he slid in head first, got a concussion,
then he had an ankle injury. Fernando state healthy. You
know the infield guys, they were healthy for the most part.

(33:14):
You know, I think having the sheets moved to first base,
that's going to give you more power than a rise did.
Even though I was a big Luisa Ris fan and
I wish him the best up there in San Francisco.
So offensively, this team is going to be better. Plus
you throw Cassianos in there's the designated hitter, and figure
out what you're doing with Andrew harr and ty France.

(33:36):
I mean, this kid team has a chance to be
pretty good. I don't think they're good enough to win
the division, but they're definitely good enough to get to
the playoffs. I remember, you only got to beat out
nine teams, and there's some bad teams out there. There's
some teams that don't even want to win.

Speaker 1 (33:53):
Coach, I know you and I are massive Laker fans,
how do you feel about this three game win streak.
Do you think this is the product and them playing
teams blow five hundred Do you think they've kind of
found something that clicked.

Speaker 4 (34:04):
Well, They've been great against those teams below five hundred
doll a year long. I think the Lakers they have
a tendency to play to the level of their competition.
They got Denver tomorrow night. They're in Denver, and Denver,
you know, it's not the team they were maybe three
years ago, but they're still a very very good team
when you got the Joker and you know all the
guys they've got in that back court. So it'll be

(34:26):
a good test tomorrow night. I'm looking forward to that.
Was very upset with the Lakers last week, Sammy. I mean,
they they blew a couple of tea have won, but
they're on a nice three game win streak. They made
that game last night a little bit closer in the
fourth quarter than it should be. But I like the
way they're playing. They're doing a lot of good things.
And again, I think when they played the bigger name teams,

(34:49):
they seem to play a little bit more cohesive right
from the opening tap. Sometimes they wait till the last
six minutes in the fourth quarter to really start turning
it on.

Speaker 3 (34:59):
Coach has always we appreciate your time. Just twenty two
days away. I think I have that right. Twenty two
days away from opening day. It's gonna be a lot
of fun with the Padres this year. We'll keep checking
in with you as it gets closer.

Speaker 4 (35:09):
I'm glad you didn't bring up Aztech basketball.

Speaker 3 (35:12):
Yeah, it's been tough. I literally lost sleepover it last night.

Speaker 2 (35:16):
Coach.

Speaker 3 (35:16):
I'm not sure what we watched last night, but it
wasn't a team I was familiar with.

Speaker 4 (35:21):
Well, it's nothing Brian Dutcher and Droid watching last night.
I can tell you that.

Speaker 3 (35:24):
No, definitely not. We'll check in next week, coach. Thanks
for your time.

Speaker 4 (35:28):
All right, gentlemen, keep it rolling.

Speaker 3 (35:30):
Coach Canta one of the best doing it here in
San Diego. I love getting a chat with him on
a weekend, week out. Basis all right at San Diego
Sports seven sixty. We will close this thing out coming
up next Plus get you a little final thoughts here
on that Aztecs game from last night at San Diego
Sports seven sixty live my Heart Radio app. But my
one little pick. I put ten bucks on it just
now and I like it a lot.

Speaker 4 (35:52):
Well.

Speaker 3 (35:52):
Xanderschoftley to win the API, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, which
gets going tomorrow out of Bayhill Club in Florida. Xander's
never won this tournament before. He stacked up ten PGA
Tour wins over his career. He's starting to play a
little bit better. If you haven't noticed the trend on Xander,
he's starting to really him in the higher what's he
going off at? I think twenty five plus twenty five hundred?

Speaker 1 (36:13):
I like that.

Speaker 2 (36:15):
Little twenty five extra money ted hey fifty.

Speaker 1 (36:19):
I'm a big Xander Schoffey fan, so I'm I'm with that. Look.

Speaker 3 (36:22):
I'm not probably Scotty wins this thing, but if you
want to do a little sprinkle on the API, get
you something interested to watch the next couple of days.
Xanderschoffli plus twenty five hundred, I like that, all.

Speaker 1 (36:31):
Lottah, It's a sprinkle. You have to know for all
of us betters out there, you have to know what
your average bet is.

Speaker 2 (36:37):
Yeah, this is a I would go half a unit, right.

Speaker 1 (36:40):
Half a unit for doubling units. Maybe you're quadrupling units
on things like the Masters, NBA Finals, super Bowls, things
like that, gambling lingo Fletch.

Speaker 2 (36:50):
So well, yeah, I get it.

Speaker 3 (36:51):
And this is a big tournament for golfers like they
have this one in very high regard. And that's why
you see all the big names. Scotty's out there this week,
Rory's out there this week, Xander, all the big names
are gonna be playing this week at the API.

Speaker 2 (37:02):
So I like Xander for a little bit of the sport.

Speaker 1 (37:06):
I like it.

Speaker 2 (37:06):
This one's important to these guys.

Speaker 4 (37:07):
Xander.

Speaker 3 (37:08):
The history of golf is important to him. This is
a big one for someone to win. He hasn't won
it yet in his career. Sam, you want to reset
long shots real quick before yet here we got.

Speaker 1 (37:16):
Three leg NBA parlay.

Speaker 3 (37:18):
The text line loves this one, multiple numbers saying this
is my favorite long shots in a long time.

Speaker 1 (37:22):
I like this one as well. So Clippers night game
taking on Indiana. Evaka Zubac not playing in that one,
the former Clipper, but the former Pacer Benne mcmathrin, I
think is gonna go off again. Former team covering the
spread twelve and a half. The Pacers with no Haliburton
have been a disaster this year. So give me the
Clippers minus twelve and a half. I like Oklahoma City

(37:44):
minus four and a half in the garden. Take it
on the Knicks. I get the Knicks have been playing
with a lot of positive momentum recently, beating up on
the Raptors, beating up on Houston and some of the
talented teams they've been playing. I think Oklahoma City and
the returner shades and I gets after them. And then
I like the Hornets, our old Hornets, to go into
TD Garden in Boston cover the spread plus six and

(38:04):
a half. Quietly, Hornets playing some of the best basketball
in the NBA. I think they get a signature win tonight,
and let's might as well take the points at plus
six and a half.

Speaker 3 (38:13):
A couple of road teams and a home team. We'll
see if it works. I'd love to be rich coming
in tomorrow, and I will be if Sammy's long shots win.
All Right, that's about it for us today. John Shaffer
is coming up next. Thank you to everybody who participated.
Fun show on the text line with the sleeper golf
course picks. We have so many text on and we love.
All the Chiefs talk was fun. I think that the
Chiefs are just selling their souls.

Speaker 1 (38:34):
Look at all our Chiefs fans and the text. It's
beautiful to see God. I hate the chief.

Speaker 3 (38:38):
The kingdom runs deep. All right, we're out of here
for today. Shaefy's coming up next. We'll see you tomorrow
in San Diego. Sports seven six. You're listening live on
