Speaker 1 (00:00):
The following takes place between one pm and two theater.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Now it's time to enter the Fletcher Zone number two
here on San Diego Sports seven sixty. What's going on, everybody?
Ben Fletcher, Sammy long with you till two o'clock. John
Schaeffer is going to take over. Then a couple of
YouTube chats to get to here before we get going.
In hour number two, our buddy SD Tyler saying, Xander
(00:26):
looking good out there today? Has Xanderschoffley played very very
well today. I believe it's six under tied for seventh Faith,
Faith and Fletcher, Faith and Fletcher.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
I like that a lot.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Steven saying, how about those Padres? Yah, they're up twelve
to nothing on the MS right now. Rich Maguire sang
Mung song with the power. Did he hit a bomb
first one in Padres uniform?
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Good for him?
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Uh? Jay Silv saying cactus ball and Rich also saying
Spurs at home is hard to bet against Sammy twenty
one and six so far this season.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
But hashtag Faith and Sammy.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Rich, I hear you.
Speaker 4 (00:56):
I understand the concern. I just feel like Kate Cunningham
Wemby in the MVP conversation. If kid wants to win
this thing, he's got to beat Wenby down the stretch here.
I think Kay Cunningham, I got a hunch he's got
something tonight.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
Samu likes going road dogs. If I'm learning anything about
his betting style.
Speaker 4 (01:11):
I like road dogs. I like taking the points on
the road. Especially on an NBA night, a random night,
a Thursday, you can catch them teams lacking.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
All right, Well, we did have some breaking news regarding
yesterday's long shots.
Speaker 1 (01:22):
Do you want to tell everybody what that was?
Speaker 3 (01:24):
Okay?
Speaker 4 (01:25):
So, as of three minutes ago, the NBA does a
report where they kind of review official calls, officiating and
give it a review.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
Like a baseball report card in an umpire exactly.
Speaker 4 (01:36):
So we needed the Thunder to win by five points.
They won by three points.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
Last night.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
Apparently the Thunder missed. There were two calls that went
against the Oklahoma City Thunder that the NBA came out
and said today we're massive misses.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
So the NBA's listening to our show, Adam Silver is
listening to our show on a daily basis.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
Understanding the amount of money that goes into various betting
apps around the country, based off of this show in
Samulong's recommendations, and Adam Silver is slipping little tiny pieces
of paper that he chews up first and then spits
into a tube that goes all the way to different
arenas across the country to make sure that the officials
are aware of the fact that Sammy Long and the
betting public of San Diego and the world are on
(02:17):
one thing, and he's making sure it goes the other way.
Speaker 3 (02:19):
I don't like that they're out to get us.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
A conspiracy has been hatched here on San Diego Sports
seven sixty at one oh four on Thursday March fifth,
at one oh four and ten seconds that Adam Silver
is coming after us.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
I advise we all boycott House Silver.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
It's the power of the San Diego betting public.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
That's what it is.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Man, So we're not just San Diego. Come on saving
word worldwide. We got listeners up in Canada, we got
listeners out Flaida, we got listeners in is it Iowa?
I think in Iowa, we got a couple of people.
We're all on the globe everywhere everywhere, Central Valley too.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
Shout out Alex Fletcher, my big brother.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
Hey shot Alearx Fletcher.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
It is San Diego Sports seven sixty. I do want
to touch on this before we get to the big
three here. The World Baseball Classic gets going in Earnest today.
Tomorrow night, Team USA will play their first real WBC
game against Brazil. It's a five o'clock start time here
on the Pacific coast.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
That's good time.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
It's a good time for us all to be able
to sit down and watch Primetime Friday evening. I will
be at San Diego State's game. Same, are you coming
tomorrow night to the game?
Speaker 3 (03:16):
I will be coming to the game.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Perfect.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
So Sam and I are going to be at the
Aztecs game. But if you're having a normal Friday night,
this is a good thing for you to barbecue watch
this this game. Maybe you have an outdoor projector it's
a good time for you to watch some Team USA baseball.
But is this a draw? Team USA hockey was a draw.
My entire social circle was talking about Team USA hockey.
We all got up early in the morning to watch
(03:38):
the finale against Team Canada.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
That was a draw.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
The country was talking about Team USA hockey, which is
a good thing for sports. Yeah, in a couple of
weeks is the country gonna be talking about Team USA.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
Baseball Texas seven zero four to seven zero. Start your
message with a team. I don't know my answer yet.
I think it was easy to get behind TM USA hockey.
I think the storylines were all there for it. There
was some redemption to be had, and it ended up
being TM USA versus Team Canada, and that way.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
It was the matchup everyone wanted.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
It was storybook, it really was, and it was easy
to get behind because the girls won it, and then
a couple days later the guys won it, and that
was easy for everyone to kind of get behind and
watch the whole story unfold.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
Is it that easy with TMUSA Baseball.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
I think if we're comparing it to USA hockey, the
Olympics bring just a crowd already. It's the Olympics. It's
obviously bigger than the WBC. But I think it will
because if we get USA Japan, if we get USA,
Dominican Republic, USA Mexico, people are gonna be really excited.
I think maybe some of the early qualifying matches where
(04:40):
you see teams that are so much better than everyone
else and the US is the favorite at minus one ten,
Japan's plus three fifty Dominican republics plus four hundred. So
teams like Italy don't have a shot. Teams like Great Britain,
I mean, like, let's be real, they're not major leaguers,
so literally some of their teams are made up of
teachers and people who like have everyday.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
Jazz Chisholm Junior is on Great Britain's team. Well, Jazz
did not know he was British. She will be the
hero of New York if he comes through for that one.
But I think it will as we get farther in
because if we remember, I mean Mike Trout Vishoyotani, that.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
Was stop what you're doing, turn on the closest TV.
You gotta watch this.
Speaker 4 (05:19):
So do I think USA Brazil, assuming it's not a
close game, because you know, we should dominate that game
with all the talent that's on This American team is
at the Olympic hockey level. I don't know about that,
but I do think people will really get into it
here over the next week or so, and especially when
like the biggest detriment to it could be that March
(05:41):
Madness starts in a week or two.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
That's a big deal. The Masters is right around the corner.
I don't think that'll interfere with anything. But the other
thing I think that hurts the WBC. How many Padre
fans are not even going to be rooting for Team
USA because they want to see Team Dominican Republic do
better because Fernando Tatis shoot here and Manay Machada on
Team like I have a hard time separating out, Like
there's a lot of guys on TAM USA I really
(06:04):
don't like because of who they play for. But how
many Dodgers are on TM USA, how many come on.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
I see?
Speaker 2 (06:14):
I know, with my heart of hearts, I want to say, yeah,
I'm gonna go root for tv USA if Cursehell is
on the mail. I don't know that I could root
for tv US A. I come on, now, seems Aminican Republic.
If I see Fernando out dancing at the top.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
Of the Republic over Team USA, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
I don't know the answer to that.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
That's unpatriotic. I think so too.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
It makes me feel gross even saying it's sammy, But
that is for sure a factor going into this that
people who are baseball fans.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
It's easy with hockey, right there's not too many. There's
a lot, there's a lot.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Not as many as baseball, though, Who are die hard
fans of one NHL team where they're where their team
is split amongst several teams in the in the in
the Olympic games, right, But in baseball there's major league
players on a ton of these teams and you that's
a die hard fan of that player.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
Yes, but that's okay.
Speaker 4 (06:59):
So that's where Canada and the US and hockey made
a big hat. Even for hockey fans people Canada, casual
people know Connor McDavid is, he's a star. People know
who Jack Hughes is now like they're Matthew Kuchuk. There
are name brand players, big time NHL players. Both rosters
were completely made up of NHL guys. If we're seeing
(07:22):
that's what made the US for Japan so exciting last time,
because you had Sho Heo, Tani, Yoshinobimamoto, Mike Trout, Mookie Betts,
like big time players, household names that were playing and
going up against each other. So, right, if we get
the US first, Dominican Republic and Tatis and Machado, Juan Soto,
Christopher Sanchez household names. I think people are really gonna
(07:45):
care if it's right a Cinderella story where it's a
lot of non MLB players. You need Major League Baseball
stars to sell this thing, which is why I do
think the knockout rounds are gonna be really exciting in
a week.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
I am trying to think about the fact that if
it's like Tarik school Ball against Nando Tatis Junior in
like a big moment in the semi finals or something
of the WBC, I don't know who I'm rooving for.
Speaker 4 (08:05):
I says, I don't think people are getting up to
watch the WBC, especially people under thirty.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
You guys only watch because it's your job.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
Is that true? I mean I liked I watched it
a couple of years ago.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
It's by the way you say, me and I don't
have to watch anything we don't want to watch. We
get paid to talk about I think if we care
about something, then you care about it.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
Maybe the one thing we'd probably get paid to watch,
I'd be watching it anyways.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
Yeah, I don't know, but the WBC, if we don't
want to talk about it or watch about it, we
don't have to.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
There's no I'm excide of the WBC, I think people,
but to what if I made is saying, I think again.
Baseball is a sport where, especially you're taking the WBC
and you're taking out name brands like the Dodgers, Potteries, Yankees,
Red Sox, Phillies, jerseys that sell people that you put
that jersey on, people care. You need the stars to
(08:51):
make this happen. So again, if you get Theminican Republic,
if you're getting Tatis and Soto versus Judge and Bryce Harper,
people are gonna be excited. Baseball fans are going to
be excited about that.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
By the way, if it sucks, we won't talk about it.
I tell you that, I promise you that. All right,
let's get to the Big Three. Here of our number
two Sammy, where Sammy Rich flu the top stories in
the world of sports twenty minutes for you Raiders fans,
you're gonna find out the fate of Max Crosby because
we've got Raiders inside of Vinnie Bunce and you're jumping on.
But right now it's time for the Big Three, Sammy,
smash your lunch.
Speaker 1 (09:22):
Frank is here, ready to go back to the office
and knock the socks off your friends.
Speaker 5 (09:27):
I mean coworkers.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
It's time for the top stories of the day, the
big three, three, three or four.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
Fletch just likes calling out the name Big Poppy and
the Dominican Republic as a cat call. Eight five eight Fletch.
It's the name on the front of the jersey, not
the name on the back of the jersey. Yeah, I
mean all those things.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
You can't You can't be rooting against TVUS.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
I do think I'm rooting for Team USA.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
Why is that a question?
Speaker 2 (09:50):
Because Aaron Judges on Team USA, Cleg Kershaw and his
Mookie bets on tm USA, I think you know he's not. Wow,
it feels like a mistake.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
You're telling me.
Speaker 1 (10:01):
Feels like a big mistake. What is Team he was
a doing?
Speaker 4 (10:04):
I mean they were like, as a La Kings fan,
there were players on the Team USA team that I
couldn't stand.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
But I'm rooting for Team USA.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
See, it's I.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
Don't know, I don't know how I'm gonna feel about it.
When the time comes, It'll be a natural emotion. Whatever
it is, all right, Sammy, where were going last night?
Speaker 4 (10:17):
So we maligned the thunder Loot winning by only three
points last night, not covering the spread for US. But
within the game, Mike Brown said this about SGA, who
has been called a foul marchant. People have really criticized
shake gilgis Alexander's game over the last few years. SGA
does a quote great job of convincing reps he's getting hit.
(10:40):
Talking about SGA getting foul calls, do we think SGA
gets a bad rap as because he feels like SGA
gets a lot of criticism for being such an amazing player, right.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
So, yes, And by the way, same thing happened with Lebron,
even though I think the numbers have been run. Lebron
gets less calls against him than.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
Some other people every time.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
Right So, But here's the my thoughts on SGA.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
Regular season Absolutely fair, Absolutely fair. I also think SGA
shut a lot of people up last year in the
postseason because foules get called a lot less in the postseason.
He had to work his way to that NBA Finals
win for okay, see, he got fouled the entire time.
Fouls get called less in the postseason. SGA was still
a dominant force in the postseason. So while I think
(11:26):
regular season that's a valid gripe, and I think last
night that's a valid gripe, and maybe SGA hams it
up a little bit. He's not gonna get those same
calls in the postseason. That's where legacies are made. So
I do think SGA shut up a lot of that
conversation last year in the finals and in the entire
postseason run through the West.
Speaker 4 (11:42):
I do feel like SGA gets a bad rap as
a star because he's very he's very kind of soft spoken.
He's not one two three. Everyone look at me. I'm
a star, I'm the best player.
Speaker 1 (11:54):
He's Mike Trout. If Mike Trout won, it is.
Speaker 4 (11:57):
A great cop outside of the winning. You know, Mike
Trodden hasn't had that, but yes, if he he's kind
of does his job. Excellent player. He's not having highlight
reel dunks like Anthony Edwards. He's not talking trash like
Anthony Edwards, which we like in our Stars. Jason Tatum
has had a lot of this as well. Jason Tatum
is a great player. He's like a night He's a
(12:19):
nice guy. He's very kind of soft spoken.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
Jaylen Brown just seems soft as a human like ESGA,
has a little more of the killer instinct.
Speaker 4 (12:30):
Yes, yes, I think so as well. But Jason Tatum
as a killer instinct on the court. I just think
we're used to Kobe Michael Jordan starz over. I mean,
Reggie Miller throwing the choke up at the garden, even
Tyree's Halliburton last year doing that. Lebron players stars in
the league who are much more outspoken and are like, no,
I'm him, And SGA doesn't really fit that mold. So
(12:53):
I think he gets crushed for that. Even though he
is a great player. I think this whole he's a
foul march in he gets calls. I think that's a
little blown out proportion. The real foul merchant the last
decade was James Harden. Yes, he got calls up and right,
SGA can shut people up by by simply just winning,
all right. Aaron Rodgers said he is undecided on the
Pat McAfee show on his future yesterday.
Speaker 1 (13:14):
See what else he said?
Speaker 5 (13:16):
I did.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
See what else he said.
Speaker 4 (13:17):
We can't say that on the radio, but go look
up that clip anyway. Aaron Rodgers undecided on his future.
Should the Steelers get Aaron Rodgers back for one more
year and try to drop the quarterback next year, or
go get Kyler Murray.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
I mean, I do think I would go Kyler Murray personally,
I would. I think that there's a more exciting future
with Kyler Murray. And I don't think we've seen the
best of Kyler Murray. The Aaron Rodgers thing, I think
the standard NFL fan is sick of it, is fed
up with it, is done with it.
Speaker 1 (13:50):
What are we on our fifth year now of.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
Aaron Rodgers contemplating retirement every single offseason, Like.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
The stick is up, dude.
Speaker 2 (13:57):
And it'd be one thing if you went out there
and had close to MV numbers. It would be one
thing if you went up there to have upper half
of the league type numbers last year as the Steelers
starting quarterback.
Speaker 1 (14:06):
But you didn't.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
And there was nothing outrageously exciting about the way Aaron
Rodgers played ball last year. So I think the entire
NFL world we're fine if you just hang it up.
We don't need the weekly appointments on TV to talk
about your decision.
Speaker 1 (14:19):
We don't need any of that. So I would be
a okay.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
I think the rest of the NFL would be fine
if Aaron Rodgers was just done we don't need the
charade this offseason.
Speaker 4 (14:27):
Yeah, he I mean, he's just he's pasted it and
we're with The Steelers are not winning a super Bowl
this year. They run the same thing back every year.
They might be good enough to win the division. I
don't think so this year. Because Burrow's healthy, the offense
for the Bengals are healthy. I think the Ravens are
gonna be a really good football team caught up next year.
And the only way I see Rogers being back is
(14:47):
do you want to tank and try to get a quarterback?
Now the caveat to that it's supposed to be a
great quarterback draft class next year. Now, we said that
it was going to be this year as well, and
it's not. It's just Mendoza and then lot of kind
of big question marks. But looking at Dante more Arch Manning,
Jade Mayava, Lenora Sellers, there's a lot of big time
(15:07):
names coming out next year. The Steelers could, finally, if
they bought him out, be in a position to take
one of those guys. But if you do believe Kyler
Murray can have a career resurrection, and I do think
he can, Kyler Murray has the talent to become kind
of have a second act, you know, superstar performance in
this league. If you believe he's that guy, then get him.
But if it doesn't work out, Kyler Murray's good enough
(15:29):
to win you six seven games, eight games where you're
not picking at the top of the draft, which would
be a big mistake for them.
Speaker 2 (15:35):
YouTube Rich was that for me? And that just hit
that home run for the Padres. Let me know, I
saw the tail end of it. I didn't see the
whole thing of it, but I think Freddy for me
and just hit a blast for the pod So you
got one more Sammy.
Speaker 4 (15:45):
Yes, the NFL mock draft. Jordan Reed just dropped an
NFL mock What get this? In the top fourteen picks.
There's one SEC player. There's one. It's a corner out
of LSU Delaane. Have we seen a complete shift in
the NFL in college football? Because for years it was
(16:06):
the SEC is the dominant conference. For years it was
the SEC is really college football and everyone else comes
in below that. Well, the SEC hasn't won a championship
in multiple years. The Big Ten went back to back
with Michigan and Ohio State, and then you had Indiana
or Big Town won three straight years with Indiana. This year,
I mean, have we seen a complete power shift or
is just just a down year for the SEC.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
It is funny because there were years man where you
could go, like the top ten linemen in a draft
all came out of Georgia. Like the first round was
just littered with Georgia defense players.
Speaker 3 (16:41):
Just say, it's seven first round picks now.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
And now this doesn't mean like George is probably gonna
have more first round picks, not in the top fifteen
this year, but it is crazy that that does feel
like the power has completely shifted. And I don't think
that's a bad thing. And I think it'll shift back
to the SEC at some point. There's a lot of
schools with great nil programs in the SEC. It will
shift back, and it'll go back and forth for a while.
But yeah, at least for right now, it feels like
(17:05):
SEC is number two.
Speaker 4 (17:06):
Well, we talk about and I don't want to get
this before everyone goes, oh, you're paying to the mounta
West the SEC. The SEC is a gazillion times better
conference in the Mount West. Sorry in terms of football,
but we talk about cannibalizing each other. Look, at the
SEC for years had Alabama and Georgia, who are a
cut above everyone else, and Alabama without next table, has
(17:30):
come back to the pack a little bit in Kylen
de Boor and Georgia has come back to the pack
a little bit so excellent football program but not quite
the same. And you're seeing your missouris are really talented,
your lsus. All these teams are talented enough to where
Vanderbilt it's tough to go get road wins, but they
don't have the same top twenty five presents they used
to have. And it feels like all the topsier teams,
(17:50):
you're Indiana's, You're Ohio State's, Michigan's Oregon, They're all in
the Big ten. Even the Big twelve is now a
big presence in the NFL draft and has been been
really successful the last few years. I think Lincoln Riley
said it the SEC. Everyone can pay their players now,
and the SEC was doing it for years under the table.
It feels like everyone's caught up and the power has
shifted in college football.
Speaker 2 (18:10):
For me, and hit a three run home run, Jackson
Merrill just hit an absolute bomb.
Speaker 1 (18:14):
That boy is fairal Heading into twenty twenty six, we
like it.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
Padres have scored seventeen runs today against the Mariners and
it's the third inning of this game.
Speaker 4 (18:23):
So that's good Jackson Merril x factor for the Potre season.
Speaker 1 (18:25):
Yeah you like that?
Speaker 3 (18:26):
All right?
Speaker 2 (18:27):
San Diego Sports seven to sixty quick break here coming
up in ten minutes of any bunsignor is gonna be
on the show. You'll hear that coming up live on
Myheart Radio app. Aaron Rodgers is married. I thought to Brittany,
is that her name?
Speaker 3 (18:36):
No one knows her name.
Speaker 4 (18:37):
I thought it was Brittany. I thought we knew that much. Okay,
maybe I don't know. All I know is that if
I was a Steeler.
Speaker 1 (18:45):
Highly Dowd he made up getting married.
Speaker 3 (18:47):
Yeah, I Doddy made up getting married too. But I
mean Aaron Rodgers. I mean this.
Speaker 4 (18:52):
Aaron Rodgers needs to be studied for how to keep
a narrative a media above about himself going for sure?
Speaker 2 (19:02):
And look, I think I was jokingly said it's been
like five years of him doing the retirement rate.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
I don't think that's a joke at all. I think
it has been about five years.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
That Aaron Rodgers has been doing the will he won't
he retire at the end of every single season, and.
Speaker 1 (19:13):
Now this year. Look, Aaron Rodgers is an aging.
Speaker 2 (19:15):
Quarterback who's not that good anymore yet on March fifth,
NFL offseason or talking about Aaron Rodgers as much as anybody,
and I don't even know that he makes an impact
on whatever the next team he's on, is like, I
really don't.
Speaker 3 (19:29):
Well, yeah, it's like Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 4 (19:31):
Of all these quarterbacks you have, I don't think two
one moves the needle. I don't think Aaron Rodgers moves
the needle.
Speaker 1 (19:37):
I would rather have Daniel Jones next year than Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 4 (19:40):
Yeah, because at least with now, I wouldn't want to
sign Daniel Jones to a long term deal. Is if
that's what he wants. All these quarterbacks are pure shot
in the darks. The only two quarterbacks that you look
at have the ability to become something. Malik Willis is
the hot name of the free agent market, but I
have a hard time buying that because he only playing
a few games this year. Definitely not for thirty mil
(20:01):
for me. Now for thirty mil if you get him
on a flyer. Maybe everyone thought he was a project
coming out of Liberty maybe he could be something. Kyler
Murray is the only free agent available quarterback that I
look at and go, that's a guy I could try
to build a team around. Given he's still young. I
believe he's only twenty seven years old and could be something.
(20:23):
But this whole Aaron Rodgers Mike McCarthy storyline, I mean,
Pittsburgh fans, if you're a Pittsburgh fan, please Texas seven
zero four to seven zero start your mess with a
team you must be losing your mind. I mean, how
many years can you run the same thing back with
mediocre quarterback play in an ugly offense to watch and
expect different results?
Speaker 3 (20:43):
And it now a.
Speaker 2 (20:44):
Downgraded head coach. Mike McCarthy is not the head coach
the Mike Tomlin is.
Speaker 4 (20:47):
Mike Tomlin is gonna be sitting back and laughing when
they have a worst season than he's had and he
got blown out for it in an aficial with Joe
Burrow and Lamar Jackson.
Speaker 2 (20:56):
If I'm a Steelers fan, I'm looking at Mike McCarthy,
I'm like, why is Mike karthy the head coach for
Kyler Murray who probably needs a young offensive coordinator? Do
you think this is a Pete Carroll situation where he's
a like I really do think it could be now.
They signed what three year deal, right, But contracts they
don't mean anything exactly.
Speaker 1 (21:13):
So I think the Steelers are in a transition phase.
Speaker 2 (21:15):
In fact, this was the first time in a long
time the Steelers ranked super low on the NFL Anonymous players, readers,
pull whatever it is, but the Steelers were near the bottom,
and so I think they're in an era of transition,
not just at the head coaching level, quarterback level. They
probably got to start from scratching a lot of things.
They got to upgrade their facilities. They got to bring
in some free agents and be Look, no one's moving
(21:35):
to Pittsburgh just to move to Pittsburgh, right. If you're
gonna be a draw, you gotta make sure the facilities
are up. Pittsburgh has a lot of changing to do,
and staying the same does not make sense to me.
Speaker 4 (21:45):
And look look at look at the division. Lamar Jackson
in the Ravens with the young head coach and Jesse Minter.
I think Zach Taylor this is his last year with Cincy.
I think they should have gotten a new head coach.
But I'm looking at Mike may Daniel if he has
a good year with the Chargers. If you're Mike Mandaniel,
wouldn't you want to go coach Joe Burrow in Cincy?
Assuming he's still there. The Steelers are in this odd
(22:05):
place where they're third in their division right now, and
it's just not a lot of hope offensively going forward.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
We'll see it's gonna be a fun year next year
in the NFL. I can promise you that.
Speaker 3 (22:14):
All right.
Speaker 2 (22:15):
Vinnie Bonnceignor is coming up next. Vinnie covers the Raiders.
He also covers all the AFC West. We'll get into
it with him on the other side at San Diego
Sports seven sixty live on my Heart Radio app with
Max Crosby potentially on the move and with the number
one overall pick in their hands. So right now we
bring in Vine Bonceignor from out in Las Vegas covering
the Raiders. Vinnie, how are you, man, it's been too long.
Speaker 5 (22:35):
I'm doing good. How are you guys doing?
Speaker 1 (22:36):
We're doing great, man. It's good to hear your voice.
Good talk to you.
Speaker 2 (22:39):
So, Max Crosby, how much longer is he a Las
Vegas Raider?
Speaker 5 (22:43):
That's a good question. I would imagine we're going to
get some sort of a resolution here pretty quickly. And
it doesn't mean that he's going to get traded. I
ain't the Raiders are. You know, they've they've got a
bit of a line that they've drawn in the sand,
and what they are willing to accept, what they aren't
willing to accept. They ultimately control the situation regardless of
(23:04):
whether Max wants to go or not. He's under contract
to them for a couple of more years and and
he's obviously been the face of their franchise and the
heart and soul of their team and droll pro player,
one of the more the true difference makers in football.
So he's not somebody that they're just gonna give away.
So if somebody that wants him, and I would, I
would suspect that plenty of teams due uh, they're gonna
(23:26):
have to come correct and meet the demand that the
that the Raiders are asking for.
Speaker 4 (23:31):
Can you speak to like Tom Brady's influence on the organization,
because there's been rapports that he met with Frenanna Mendoza,
data great meeting. Then there was that odd report that
apparently Max Crosby was frustrated with Tom Brady's trainer, like,
how involved is Tom Brady with the Raiders kind of
day to days?
Speaker 5 (23:47):
Well, day to day is a little bit, a little
bit tricky. He's obviously in constant contact with John spy
Tech and Mark Davis, but specifically John spy Tech's he's
the President of Football Operations. He's not allowed to have
that title as a minority owner, but that's basically what
he is, and so's he's part of everything that the
(24:09):
Raiders do and are doing. And so yeah, you know
without question now, of course, day to day it's John
spy Tech, the general manager. Mark Davis said that pretty
clear when they moved on from Pete Carroll what the
chain of command was going to be, And it's John
spy Tech and Tom Brady running football operations, with the
day to day being John spy Tech and Tom Brady
(24:30):
being a very big voice and everything that the club does.
Speaker 2 (24:33):
You can find Vinni's work in the California Post. Also,
he hosts the Morning Tailgate on Raider Nation Radio nine
to twenty am out there in Las Vegas. So check
out Vinnie all over the place. Vinny the quarterback situation,
the thought is it's Fernando Mendoza and knowing Vegas like
I know Vegas, He's going to be plastered all over
the place, So not drunk, but plastered literally Posters of
(24:55):
him are going to be everywhere.
Speaker 1 (24:56):
Do you think Fernando.
Speaker 2 (24:57):
Mendoza is ready for that level of hype coming into
Las Vegas.
Speaker 5 (25:02):
Yeah, I mean, you know, obviously that's going to be
a that's that's that's going to be not a culture
shock for him. But he's got a lot of pressure
on his shoulders. But it feels like he's he's kind
of wired for this. I mean, you don't go do
what he did at Indiana and all the scrutiny and
all the attention that was put on him winning the
Heisman Trophy being basically their go to guy every moment,
(25:26):
every crunch time moment that they that that Indiana had
and heeded him to step up. He did, and so
it feels like he's wired correctly for it. He's going
to get embraced by Raider Nation. I mean, there's obviously
a strong heritage with with Raiders and the Hispanic community.
I already can see all the Mendoza jerseys. You know
(25:47):
that that people are buying up already and soon to
be official jerseys that they can they can buy. When
you talk about Tom Flores and Jim Plunkett and the
great heritage that that they represent, it's it's kind of
as it makes her a real seamless, you know, acceptance.
So that for Nando Mendoza as the Raiders quarterback, and
I think for the first time since I've been covering
(26:09):
this team and it was basically in twenty nineteen that
I took over the beat, I've not since this level
of everybody's behind this and everybody's behind Clint Kubiak when
it comes to Rater Nation, I've not experienced that. There was.
There was disdain immediately jo with Josh McDaniels higher Antonio Pierce.
(26:31):
I don't think anyone quite knew what they were getting
in Antonio Peers. He was a linebacker coach in the
NFL for a year and a half before he becomes
a head coach. Okay, what's how's that going to work out?
It obviously didn't. And there was always apprehension with Pete
Carroll based on the age, not necessarily the person or
the level of coach. There was always this understanding Okay,
what happened in a couple of years when he's seventy seven,
seventy eight years old, whereas Clint Kubiak paired up with
(26:54):
for Nando Mendoz. It just makes kind of all the
sense in the world. And the first time since I've
been hovering the team, you can feel that energy. And
now it's gonna take a little while. I think everybody
acknowledges that, from Tom Brady, the Don spy tech and
it feels like they're willing to to to do what's
necessary to build the runway that you're gonna need to
(27:15):
get this thing turned around. And the days, hopefully for them,
are over of hiring a coach and firing a coach
within a year or a year and a half.
Speaker 4 (27:23):
What's the timeline for this Raider team, Because you kind
of look at the AFC West, the Chiefs just traded
to try and mcduffy. They're gonna get Mahomes back this year,
Broncos won in the division and the Chargers look to
have their entire offensive line. Is this like an extended
runway for Clint Kubiak or do you think this is
like there's some pressure to show something this year.
Speaker 5 (27:42):
Yeah, I think it's it's the John Wooden you know quote,
you know, be quick, but hurry, And I think that
that's what the Raiders. The Raiders understand that they can't
just sit on their hands. Obviously, everything that they do
has to be a decision that's going to pay off
in the in the in the not so in future.
What I would say is that, you know, they have
(28:04):
an incredible amount of draft arsenal, including the first pick
overall nine picks after that, that they can make some
real headway. You know, in terms of the roster rebuild,
They've got some really good pieces. You know, when you
think of rock Powers and you think of Ash and
gent Y and Colton Miller and Jackson Powers, Johnson, you know,
some of the some of the names offensively and some
some pretty intriguing young players that they've invested some draft
(28:27):
picks on. Defensively. They also got you know, the third
most money in the NFL and free agency, you know,
salary cap wise, they're printing money in Las Vegas, so
they're in a great position there. So as far as
the timeline, I don't think that they're looking at twenty
twenty six as got got to start winning a bunch
of games in twenty twenty six. I think they're actually
(28:47):
more looking forward twenty twenty seven to make a real
significant jump. But to do that, they understand you can't
waste your time in twenty twenty six. So it has
to be progress. You have to, you know, build the
proper infrastructure around Fernando Mendoza. He needs to show that
he's the guy moving forward. They need to fix the
offensive line, They need to retool the defense. If they
(29:08):
do trade Max Crosby, they need to maximize the assets
that they hit that trade to really expedite the rebuild.
So I would think that what they're would you know,
not sacrificing twenty twenty six, but not putting all the
pressure on twenty twenty six more so with the idea
of let that be a transition year to really you know,
(29:31):
set the foundation in place so that there's a real
chance for maybe even a playoff push, a wild card
playoff push in twenty twenty seven.
Speaker 2 (29:39):
Follow Vinnie on social at Vinnie bonsenor you can find
him on x at that where he does some excellent work.
But Vinnie, you look at the AFC West as a whole,
and now the Denver Broncos. Who knows, there may be
a broken ankle away from winning a Super Bowl this year,
at least competing in a Super Bowl this year. The Chargers,
I feel like, have been kind of quiet outside of
the bend to move. I don't know what they're going
to do this offseason, but you imagine they would do
(29:59):
some to try to help Justin Herbert out. But the
Chiefs are cutting salary left and right, and it's been
a loud offseason for the Chiefs. But do you think
that they are immediately back into the conversation as one
of the top teams in the NFL next year or
is this going to take a while to rebuild from
what was a rough yer last year.
Speaker 5 (30:17):
A couple of things. How healthy are we talking about
with Patrick Mahomes? When is he getting back on the field,
Because I think that's the key to the whole thing.
Once you get your leader pack, your quarterback leader pack,
then to me, anything is possible with that team. Now
they have two first round picks. You know, it's interesting
though they may lose both of their cornerbacks. They trained
(30:39):
one of them yesterday. Their other starting cornerback might leave
a free agencies, So we'll see how that goes. I
can never count out the Kansas City Chiefs with Patrick
Mahomes behind center, and every time you do, he's like, yeah, hello,
I'm still the best player in the NFL. So I
would be I would not be surprised whatsoever if Patrick
is healthy off next year that they're right in the
(31:01):
thick of things. What's intriguing about the Chargers is the
moves that they've made. They've got the most money to
spend under the salary cap in the NFL, so they're
they're in a really great position. Now they've got a
bunch of holes to fill. Their entire interior offensive line
is basically either gone or a pending free agent in
Zion Johnson. So but then again, they weren't that good,
(31:23):
so that that that creates a lot of space to
be able to bring in is it Tyler Linderbaum? You know,
do you do? You also bring in another one of
the guards. Is a pretty deep free agency class for guards.
So even though on paper it doesn't look good on
the interior the offensive line, they've got so much money
and some connections to some of the guys out there
(31:43):
that are going to be hitting free agency that you
could see it turning around pretty quickly. So they have
the means to make some moves to really strengthen some
areas of concern the offensive line, to be a wide receiver,
edge rusher. I could definitely see them in the Chay
Hendrickson race. You know, that's a spot that you would
think he would look at and say, look, they've got
(32:04):
a potential championship caliber quarterback. It's coached by Jim Harbaugh,
They've got a lot of pieces in the place. It's California,
that would be a great landing spot for him. So
it'll be interesting to see how aggressive that they are.
But sound it looks like anyway, based on the moves
that they've made, that they are really setting the table
for being really aggressive and free agency.
Speaker 2 (32:24):
Yeah, but Vinnie, it's also the Chargers, and they'll probably
find some way to screw it up, won't they. They've
got a pretty good history of doing that. Hey, man,
appreciate your time, love your NFL content, and can't wait
to see more of it. We'll have you on as
the season gets closer, but always appreciate you. Vinnie.
Speaker 5 (32:39):
All Right, you guys have everyone have a great chef.
Speaker 2 (32:41):
Vinnie bonsignor find his work over at the California Post.
He's the head NFL correspondent with them, and you can
also hear him when he does Raider Nation Radio on
nine to twenty AM out in the mart.
Speaker 3 (32:53):
See.
Speaker 2 (32:53):
I like Vinnie. It's like drinking from a fire hose
with him. Sometimes it's so much information at you coming out.
But his Chief stuff kind of made me nouated.
Speaker 3 (33:00):
I just he knows he covers the Raiders.
Speaker 2 (33:03):
I know he's right. Also, we all know he's right. Sammy,
we like messing with you. When are you gonna understand it?
Speaker 3 (33:09):
All I said was, he knows, he knows his stuff.
Speaker 2 (33:11):
It's funny everybody agrees pretty much universally that Patrick Mahomes
is the best player in the NFL. That's not even
so defensive about the Chiefs at every single turn.
Speaker 3 (33:22):
I don't get defensive at the Chiefs.
Speaker 4 (33:23):
I just have to call out nonsense we hear about
other teams.
Speaker 2 (33:31):
Is just so privileged over the last ten years. It's
just so made in the hay. Congratulations, you guys drafted
a guy that a bunch of teams passed on and
he turned out to be amazing. Congratulations.
Speaker 4 (33:42):
It's very so excited for just NFL freegency as a whole.
Speaker 2 (33:46):
On my wore this hat today on purpose. I was
thinking about going out to Vegas for Circus Survivor.
Speaker 4 (33:51):
By the way, well, obviously we're doing that, obviously. How
many entries are we going to have this year?
Speaker 1 (33:56):
A lot? Got it? I think we might need to
just do one entry each.
Speaker 4 (34:00):
So we're not we're not communicating. No, we need first off,
hold on, we have listeners who want in on this,
which I'm very happy with, correct love to do with
some listeners. We have to do one what I mean?
That was our show prep for like a month and
a half.
Speaker 1 (34:16):
It was so great.
Speaker 2 (34:17):
The Sami and I would just go through every NFL
game and talk about how it was gonna look.
Speaker 1 (34:21):
God, well we got knocked out. I was like, God,
the show is gonna be so much tougher to do.
Speaker 3 (34:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (34:24):
It was like we would get in fights about different
teams and then that would just lead to on air conversations.
Speaker 1 (34:30):
Oh that was fun.
Speaker 2 (34:31):
Man, we're having stupid Bengals. I will forever hate them.
I think it wasn't the Bengals. Who wasn't.
Speaker 4 (34:37):
Yeah, the Jets beat the Bengals. Remember we picked the
Bengals with Joe Flacco. That's right, and Justin Fields decides
to have a performance of a lot of time.
Speaker 1 (34:46):
They were up, they had a ninety seven percent chance
to win at one point. It was crazy.
Speaker 4 (34:49):
I think we can get into this. On the other side,
we need like four entries. One is a very safe entry.
Speaker 2 (34:56):
Who's got four thousand dollars laying around? Well, listeners we
got we got a lot of people. We can't just
ask our listeners for money they're getting.
Speaker 4 (35:04):
They're getting the money too if we win. Listen, San
Diego is a thriving economy. But Michael is this one
is a very safe Circus Survivor where we go with
like massive favorites every week. I think one is a
risk risk Circus Survivor. We're taking close money lines. We
(35:24):
take a break more than anything. Otherwise, we're gonna have
no time at the end of the show.
Speaker 3 (35:27):
But we can continue to thinking about Circus Survivor.
Speaker 1 (35:29):
Now, where did all this four thousand dollars come from?
Speaker 3 (35:31):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (35:31):
It's San Diego Sports seven sixty live on iHeart Radio
app for October twenty second and twenty fourth. Now, I
just need the Chiefs to play there on the twenty fifth. Oh,
come on, NFL.
Speaker 4 (35:40):
Fridge Rogers sounds like a real class act individual.
Speaker 2 (35:43):
I would love to go see Metallic at this fear,
I don't think there's any way I'm gonna be able
to or justify ponying up the amount of money.
Speaker 3 (35:50):
You know who's doing all the promos for him?
Speaker 1 (35:52):
Our guy, mal Our Guy, Malcolm, I heart cool guy.
Speaker 3 (35:56):
Uh yeah, Bridge Watcher, the closet guy in the building.
Speaker 1 (35:59):
Oh, he's easily the cool guy in the building.
Speaker 2 (36:01):
Fridge Watcher also saying he spent twenty seven hundred dollars
for three tickets. Really, we're gonna make Sammy do math
twenty seven hundred divided by.
Speaker 3 (36:08):
Three nine Wow, Landego State.
Speaker 2 (36:10):
Education, San Diego State Education. He can do fast math.
Good for you, Sammy. But that's gonna be awesome, dude.
Could you imagine enter Sandman at the sphere?
Speaker 3 (36:18):
It'd be fantastic.
Speaker 1 (36:19):
They also said they're not gonna repeat songs.
Speaker 4 (36:21):
Yeah, they're like playing it. They're playing their whole catalog through.
Speaker 2 (36:25):
Which is cool because it's gonna be people like fridge
Watcher who are going for multiple nights so they get
to see different set lists.
Speaker 1 (36:31):
Each night, which is the way to do it if
you're doing a concert.
Speaker 4 (36:33):
I think we should tag along with John Schaeffer to
the Mountain West Conference tournament.
Speaker 1 (36:39):
Like next week. Yeah, you just want to go to Vegas?
Speaker 2 (36:42):
Yeah, I mean sure, let's give it a shot. Someone's
got to be here to run the border. You gonna
ask Brent to come in a couple hours early every day.
Speaker 3 (36:54):
Well you know how that conversation will go.
Speaker 1 (36:55):
No, No, are you insane?
Speaker 3 (36:57):
I don't? I hate you?
Speaker 2 (36:58):
And Ben No, no shot. All right, we're done for
the day. John Shaffer is coming up next. Take it
easy on them, all right. Shaffy's feeling nervous about tomorrow night.
Dude probably hasn't slept since that, since the last couple
of San Diego State losses. We're out of here, see
you tomorrow. Had fun today, everybody, Thank you for being here.
