seconds ahead for pond as text went at eighty nine
eighty six.

Now talk to the Mountain Westernnament SDFC continues their early
season dominance.
Speaker 4 (00:25):
The victory the three points and yes this one gets to.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Eleven, make it official eleven straight, unbeaten on the road
for the Road.
Speaker 5 (00:33):
Warriors known as Mikey bout.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
As is born and NFL Free Agencies at full speed.
Already Miami Dolphins, in the surprise of nobody, officially have
moved on from Tua Tunga Bai Looa.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
They have released him. Kenneth Walker going to the Kansas
City Chiefs.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
Let's kick off the week from the San Diego Sports
seven to sixty studios inside the Fletch Zone.
Speaker 3 (00:54):
Yeah, let's get it going in hour number two, Ben Fletcher,
Sammy Long, with it till two o'clock, John Shape if
will take over. Then we got Maury Brown coming up
in about thirty minutes.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
Mary Brown is great.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
Talking about the financial side of baseball, So we'll get
his thoughts on the Padres ownership skerfuffle.
Speaker 1 (01:10):
We'll get his thoughts on kerfuffle. It's a good word,
look it up.
Speaker 5 (01:14):
We'll guy like it.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
His thoughts on Major League Baseball's impending lockout that's coming
as well. Can't wait to check it with Morey. He's
an old buddy as well. So far, today has been
all about the NFL for good reason. The NFL is
absolutely chaos today on March ninth, as the legal tampering
window opens. Which it's hysterical to me that those three
words are serious words and not just something that fans
(01:36):
call this. This is the legal tampering window in the NFL,
the National Football League. So we've seen huge names on
the move. Kenneth Walker, the Super Bowl MVP, heading to
the Kansas City Chiefs. Mike Evans, literally the best receiver
in Tampa Bay Bucks history, tied with Jerry Rice for
the most consecutive seasons over one thousand receiving yards, is
heading to the forty nine Ers on a three year,
(01:56):
sixty million dollars deal. Malik willis heading to the Miami
Dolphins to be their next quarterback. A trade, not a trade,
a deal in which ESPN has given an A to
the Miami Dolphins.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
The Malik Willis see really, you know what?
Speaker 3 (02:10):
Deal they gave us C minus Linderbaum to the Raiders,
which may be my favorite free agency move of the day.
So I don't know what we all think about ESPN's
rating system, but I think that's outrageous. And so for today,
the NFL kind of reigned supreme, which win, doesn't it.
But it's been pretty fun to watch the chaos of
the movement so far today, and it feels like we're
(02:31):
finally getting a deep breath before chaos ensues once again.
Speaker 6 (02:34):
Jay Silps afternoon, Jen's great day for Sammy? Yes it
is really you.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
Guys got a running back, congratulations.
Speaker 6 (02:41):
Not a running back, a super Bowl MVP. And it
makes sense why he want to join. You know, he's
a he's a winner. Oh my god, he's won at
the highest level. If anyone thought that he would.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
How classy I've been about Mike Evans and here Sammy
just being a total douche.
Speaker 6 (02:56):
He was gonna go with Denver and Poe Nicks and
all that nonsense, Like he wants to be a part
of a winning organization. And it's just it's it's like
Cloud nine. It's in such an amazing day.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
The Denver Broncos, in all that nonsense, who were a
broken ankle away from being in the super Bowl in what,
by the way, would have been a better super Bowl
than the one we got between the Seahawks age.
Speaker 6 (03:16):
It was a low bar. He still would have ran
all over him. So it's listen, what a great day.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
Kenneth Walker would have ran all over the Denver Broncos.
The defense that the Denver Broncos had.
Speaker 6 (03:27):
The Patriots had justice good of a defense.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
That's not true. That's simply not.
Speaker 6 (03:30):
They were playing at some of the highest level down
the stretch there. Anyway, it doesn't matter if.
Speaker 1 (03:34):
Sammy loves it when narratives just fit his point of
view perfectly.
Speaker 6 (03:37):
Kenneth Walker super stoked shout out to Jay Sales were
pointing that out.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
It was a good move for the Kansas City Chiefs.
I will give them credit. I don't know that I'm
going over the top with it. It's a running back
that is joining the team now. I think the bigger problem.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
For the Chiefs is the fact that Travis Kelcey's back.
That's a problem. Why because he's not very good anymore.
That's why.
Speaker 6 (03:55):
First off, he's still playing at an elite level. It's
just he's getting up there in age and when you
ask him to be the number one in an offense
like he used to be, that's not gonna work him.
On a one year deal up to fifteen million. Haven't
got the exact details yet. It's probably gonna be eight guaranteed,
is what I saw. That's perfectly fine. I mean, that's
I can't believe Kelsey would be the problem with the Chiefs.
(04:15):
That makes no sense. But anyway, there's a lot of moves,
uh you know, bobbase players flying around, Let them right.
I'm just like with the Malik Willis thing, Like you said,
he had three years, sixty seven million.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
And it's cheap for a quarterback.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
That is just where I could say, good job Dolphins,
because you got a guy who maybe maybe is good
enough to be a starting quarterback in this league. On
the downside of the market, it's it's cheaper than the
Sam Donald.
Speaker 6 (04:40):
To the season if he's good.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
But that's the only positive you can say about it.
What do we actually know about Malik Willis. We know
he was a.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Pretty good college quarterback with Liberty, Right, Liberty. Yeah, at
Liberty he was great. And then he gets to the NFL.
He's with the Titans. He had a cup of coffee
with the Titans, played a couple of games, didn't look
good at all. Goes to the Green Bay Packers. It
kind of shines there as a backup to Jordan Love.
He gets in and he plays.
Speaker 6 (05:01):
We played well in that game against the Ravens and the.
Speaker 3 (05:04):
Four starts this year, Right, it looked good and he
did a serviceable job. He kept the Packers in the
playoff conversation, and he was not the problem with the
Packers team if things were going bad.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
He was a bonus for the Packers.
Speaker 3 (05:14):
But the fact that a four game stretch gets you
a three year contract to be the unquestioned starting quarterback
for the Miami Dolphins is kind of outrageous to me. Well, yeah,
when there's better pieces available, Kirk Cousins is better.
Speaker 6 (05:28):
I mean, I don't know if I go that far, I would.
I mean, you're you're at least with Malik Willis, there's
the upside of he could be something. Kirk Cousins at
this point in his career is what Kirk Cousins is.
He's solid, can fill in, you know, for for a
game or two. But I mean, I don't see kirk
Cousins in that regard. But the other kind of quarterbacks
in the market, this is the best year to ever
(05:50):
be named Kyler Murray to attack of by Lowa, how
even Gino Smith, Kirk Cousins, all these guys. Because the
Raiders getting Mendoza, the Dolphin just sign Malik Willis, so
those two are gone. And now all of a sudden,
per reports that the Falcons are interested into U So
you have another team in the Falcons who need a quarterback.
The Steelers will see if they're getting Rogers back. The
(06:12):
Jets need a quarterback. Maybe Minnesota needs a quarterback. The
Cardinals need a quarterback. There are so many quarterback needed teams.
And to be a veteran trying to make it kind
of turn your career around, this just feels like an
amazing year for that. And I wonder where all these
guys go.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
I'm curious to see what happens with some of the
backups around the league. I saw Marcus Mariota re signed
with the Commanders. Earlier today, I thought there was a
real chance Marcus Mariota was gonna be given a crack
to start somewhere. But the normal suspects, Jacoby Bris said,
does he stay with the Cardinals another year? Does he
land with one of these teams to maybe be a
filling starter for a season, And then of course Mac
Jones with the forty nine ers like all of a
(06:47):
sudden today, Yeah, Trent Williams is apparently on the trade
block until Wednesday, when the Niners may end up releasing him.
But can Trent Williams go to a team, and then
Mac Jones as well? Can they go bagether somewhere and
just get a bevy of picks.
Speaker 6 (07:00):
The Niners are interesting in this because if Kyler Murray signs,
Kyler Murray's I still think is the most valuable free
agent quarterback, but Mac Jones would be right after him because.
Speaker 3 (07:09):
And the Niners are saying mac Jones isn't going anywhere,
but who believes that you can get picks for him
in good picks?
Speaker 6 (07:14):
Well, and if he doesn't go anywhere, I'm not even
just trying to make fun of your boy party, I
would trade mac Jones. But if he doesn't go anywhere.
What is that telling you about your faith in Brock Party?
Because in a quarterback, there's not a lot of quarterbacks
in this draft that you look at and go those
are bona fide starters. A lot of teams need quarterbacks.
Mac Jones is still a young player, could easily have
(07:36):
a Donald You Geno Smith Baker Mayfield type resurgence in
his career. If I'm the Niners, I think it's crazy
that I wouldn't trade mac Jones. And if I don't
trade mac Jones, you start to worry about what they
believe in Brock Party.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
Now, just to add a little bit of history to
the Niners always having really good backup quarterbacks, think back
to the Jimmy Garoppolo years, Think back to right before that.
As Kyle Shanahan has gone years where he doesn't have
a solid backup quarterback, he's been absolutely burned because quarterbacks
get hurt in the forty nine Ers system for whatever reason.
(08:09):
So he's made that a point before Brockberdy to say,
we're always gonna make sure we have a really top
half backup quarterback in our system, which is why they've
made concessions to go out and get guys like Nick
Mullins who they drafted, developed and then moved on from
to bring in a Sam Darnold, to bring in a
Mac Jones. This is kind of in his wheelhouse of
holding on to backup quarterbacks.
Speaker 6 (08:30):
So I would would you trade him?
Speaker 3 (08:31):
I would absolutely trade mac Jones right now. Absolutely trade
mac Jones. And I would absolutely trade Trent Williams because
I think his best years.
Speaker 6 (08:37):
I mean, mac Jones could easy get a second round Pisley.
I mean, you're talking about it, and.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
It's not crazy to think Trent Williams could probably get
a first round pick. Still.
Speaker 6 (08:47):
Yeah, maybe not because his age, but certainly he's getting
a high pig if you were a team that needed
a left tackle. The the Niners are an interesting spot
because you feel like they're like kind of walking the
line in that you have veteran stars in Bosa Warner
all coming back. You got a young talented defense and
(09:07):
Mike kil Williams Mustafa. So many young talented players on
that that you feel like the defense is gonna be
good for years to come. But you also have a
lot of other aging stars in McCaffrey and Kittle. Now
you just signed Mike Evans, which I like the move.
I think Mike Evans is gonna have a big year with.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
Well, it's just them signaling the Super Bowl window is
now right, so it's it's open for the next year
or so. Yeah, which is why maybe they end up
over paying Trump Williams. So we'll see. In San Diego
Sports seven sixty Sammy, let's rip through a Big three
as quickly as we possibly can. And we have Maury
Brown coming up in fifteen minutes. But go ahead, smash it.
Speaker 5 (09:41):
Is here.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
Ready to go back to the office and knock the
socks off your friends, I.
Speaker 5 (09:46):
Mean co workers.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
Bakes Time for the top stories of the day's Big.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
Three six one nine Chiefs and Raiders still fighting for
third place.
Speaker 3 (09:55):
Two rebuilding teams. Sorry, Sammy Fax over feelings. Jonas Knox
actually said something very similar earlier today when he was
talking about the AFC West he was filling in for
Calling today All up, No, I know, I was listening,
said some of the very sim you love Jonas.
Speaker 6 (10:08):
I love Jonas. All I would say is that to
my guy Jonas in sixty one nine, Vegas doesn't agree
with you. Vegas is usually right.
Speaker 1 (10:16):
Where does Vegas have the Chiefs right, though as.
Speaker 6 (10:18):
A favorite in the AFC West, only one book has
him as the second favorite behind the Chargers plus one
seventy five to plus one eighty.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
Are the Broncos just falling off a cliff?
Speaker 5 (10:26):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (10:27):
Because they won all these one score games, beat the Jets,
the Giants, the Chiefs third stringers.
Speaker 5 (10:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
I mean, where are we going, Sammy?
Speaker 6 (10:35):
We just had a hold on, We just had big
news come in. Okay, all right, oh wait, perfect, Let's
start with the Chargers.
Speaker 1 (10:40):
Are we positive it's real?
Speaker 6 (10:42):
No, it is real. It's Adam Schefter. It's verified before
we start breaking faces, because there.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
Every once in a while there's fake Adam Schefter accounts.
Speaker 6 (10:49):
All right. Former Chargers defensive end odafe Oway reached agreement
today on a four year, one hundred million dollar deal,
including sixty eight million dollars guaranteed, with the Washington Commanders.
So questions this, you got the Chargers who resign Kolomack
one year deal at age thirty six. Oh way, they
traded for it midway through the season.
Speaker 1 (11:08):
Is gone.
Speaker 6 (11:09):
Now if you're the Chargers, are you like, what are
they doing? Are you throwing the bag at Trey Hendrickson
because it feels like they're in a bidding war with
the Cowboys right now and the Bears for the best
pass rusher on the market. And if you don't land him,
where does that leave the Chargers defense.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
I'll tell you, man, the Chargers need to do something now.
The Chargers need. Probably Trey Hendrickson would be huge for
the Chargers. Don't get me wrong, but I would say
the most glaring need for the Chargers right now is
the wide receiver room.
Speaker 1 (11:36):
Now.
Speaker 3 (11:36):
Rashid Jahid is out there, he's a free agent. He's
open and available. Romeo Dobbs open and available from the Packers.
Those are two guys you could bring in on pretty
team friendly deals. Still, I don't know how many teams
are interested in one or both of them, so you
would be able to go get yourself a wide receiver.
Trey Hendrickson would be huge. How about o wait getting
one hundred million dollars from the Commanders.
Speaker 6 (11:58):
And fay Mafey just signed three years sixty with the Bengals,
So all the second year pass rushers are getting paid
getting paid.
Speaker 3 (12:05):
I really like what the Commanders are doing today. You
gotta think that they're envisioning Jade and Daniels healthy next year.
They're gearing up for war if the Charger's name doesn't
pop up soon. On Adam Schefter's account, I'm asking some
serious questions about this team.
Speaker 1 (12:18):
How have they not done anything yet?
Speaker 6 (12:21):
Well, it feels like they're trying to get Hendrickson, And
the problem with that.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
Is while they're looking here, everyone else is looking here.
Speaker 6 (12:27):
Right, So, if you're the Cowboys, if you're the Chargers
for the Bears, whoever lands Hendrickson, all is fine, All
is calm because you end up getting the best pass
rusher on the market. But right if you don't land
him and Mafe's gone, always gone. All these talents that
Jalen Phillips signed one hundred and twenty million dollar contract
with the Panthers today, everyone's kind of getting eaten up.
(12:47):
Right now, where does that leave the Chargers? The Chargers
are really signaling to me, I think they're gonna have
one of the best offenses in the league next year.
And the all jokes aside, especially if they had Dobbs.
They had Dobbs, I mean Hampton, Mike McDaniel, I can't
believe he's not a head coach I think him running
the offense, you get both tackles back and Mishaan Slater
(13:08):
and Joe Alt. They lost guards Zion Johnson today. They
signed Tyler Biadas from Washington the other day, so they're
building on the offense. The offense gonna be just fine.
But you do start to worry if you're the Chargers.
No Mincer he left for the for the Ravens and
Derwin thirty two years old, Mac thirty six years old.
You're relying on a lot of aging veterans on this team.
(13:31):
I don't know if that's if that's really the way
to go. All right, number two, and.
Speaker 3 (13:35):
Look around you, Chargers. The Raiders are better today. Yeah,
the Raiders are getting better, and they're gonna have the
number one overall pick in the draft or they're taking
a quarterback of their future.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
I don't Chargers do something?
Speaker 6 (13:45):
All right? The Cowboys so touched on this a little
bit earlier. Max Crosby Sweepstakes lose out. The Ravens offered
two first round picks for Max Crosby, and the Cowboys
only wanted to offer a first in a second. If
they don't, what do you make of them not adding
the other first stepping up the offer and competing with
(14:07):
the Bears and or the Ravens. Do you like what
Jerry Jones is doing so far in the offseason.
Speaker 3 (14:13):
I think they wanted Max Crosby bad and he would
have made sense as a cowboy like Max Crosby is
very likable. He has kind of captured the high of
the public with his sobriety story. Every time Max Crosby talks,
it feels like there's a powerful message coming out of
his mouth.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
Max Crosby would have been a star in Dallas.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
I think they got lucky not getting Max Crosby because
I think it would have been a mistake.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
It would have veered them off the course that they
set last year.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
I think what the Cowboys are doing is actually smart
and I think they just made another move for the Cowboys.
Speaker 1 (14:40):
They brought in Jalen Thompson. Thompson the safety the safety.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
So the Cowboys are getting better and they're doing it
without having the big, flashy signing. It's a good thing
that the Cowboys are doing this, and I actually think
they're setting themselves better down the line. Yeah, Max Crosby
would have helped the defense, of course he would.
Speaker 1 (14:54):
He helped anybody. He was just gonna join this year.
Speaker 3 (14:57):
But the Cowboys are kind of setting the precedent for
how they're doing things now, and by bringing in maybe
guys who are just under that superstar level, like a
Quentin Williams, like a Kenny Clark, I think their defense
is going to be better off of it because they're
getting more of them.
Speaker 1 (15:08):
Max Crosby only plays one position right now. The Cowboys
are adding their entire defense right.
Speaker 6 (15:13):
I think it was just smart for the Raiders. We
have very special guest who walked in who is mister
Raider actually.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
But Riders had a good day, Gino, thank you for
being here at Gino Iglesias.
Speaker 6 (15:23):
The Raiders, I mean, I love what they've done. Obviously,
you know, adding Lennerbaum and they just want with the
highest bidder. But if you're the Cowboys, you finally mentioned
this a little bit earlier, you're able to build throughout
the draft. This is not a defense that is one
player away. So although Max Crosby would wreck having next
to Quentin Williams for the defense in Dallas, it was
smart to kind of stay the course and do what
(15:46):
you did with Michael Parsons trade in for a bunch
of picks. Trust that Jones, Stephen Jones, the whole Jones
family can draft well into the Cowboys credit as much
flak is. It's easy to give the Cowboys. They have
drafted well over the years with first round picks as
well as deep down the board there, so it makes
the lost sense for the Ravens. But I think it's
smart if you're a Cowboy fan, and if you end
(16:07):
up signing Trey Hendrickson today while keeping all those draft ficks,
the Cowboys could come out as the big winner in
free agency.
Speaker 3 (16:12):
We'll save number three for the other side well, also
getting Aztecs and SDFC coming up next. Morey Brown joining
us at one thirty at San Diego Sports seven sixty.
You're listening live on iHeartRadio app. It was pretty spectacular
in terms of just a college basketball game. It was
back and forth all night long. UNLV probably played their
best game of the season. San Diego State played just
barely better, right, and they got the win in that one.
(16:34):
But I do want to focus for just a second
on Josh Passner. Josh Passner is the first year head
coach with UNLV. He was a point guard in college.
I think he had a cup of coffee in the
NBA two and very animated head coach. We saw that
the first time these two teams played, when they were
at the Thomas and Mack in Las Vegas. Very animated
head coach, largely positive by the way. He's a very
(16:54):
positive guy when his guys do something good on the court.
Josh Passner is going to be animated now. I was
kind of front coat, close and personal to a lot
of everything that Josh Passner was doing this time. And
I could hear what he was saying this time because
I was sending courtside next to Schaeffer. When I tell you,
this man is a genuine psychopath. This man is a
genuine psychopath. And I think he's gonna work. I think
(17:15):
he's gonna be a really good college basketball coach. But
he jumped on me twice, Sammy, what I'm not kidding?
Speaker 1 (17:22):
Like when.
Speaker 3 (17:24):
So Dre gives Lawhorne the player for UNLV was excellent
against San Diego State.
Speaker 1 (17:29):
He would make a three, Josh Passner would.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
Jump on top of the press row that John and
I sit at the table that's quart side and fall
back onto like media row of reporters.
Speaker 1 (17:42):
I held him up. One time. He sat on top
of our crowd bike one time. Josh Passner is an
insane person.
Speaker 6 (17:48):
I'm not touching that crowdmike again.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
Me neither, but Josh Passener. At one point he got
a warning from the officials. Finally he was literally out
on the court feet away from players in.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
The middle of plays. He likes set a screen. At
one point, Mountain West officiating just like, oh hi, Josh,
you're all good, Yeah, you can be out here. I
was so utterly confused by everything that was happening with
Josh Pastor and the UNLV bench.
Speaker 1 (18:12):
I've never seen anything like it.
Speaker 6 (18:14):
Well, it's gonna lead to a fun Mountain West tournament because,
as you know, Miles Bird said last week, don't beat
on them mount West because it really is. There's legit
eight teams in Boise State and Colorado State. If you
would have said heading into the Mountain West Conference tournament
with two teams playing the hottest basketball right now and
they have, it might be two of the most dangerous teams.
(18:36):
And it's looking like, unless Fresno State pulls a big upset,
the Aztecs are probably gonna be playing them, you know,
in their first matchup. It's gonna be fun for the Aztecs.
I mean, it's everything we've talked about all season, the
inconsistent play, the big time play at times, the kind
of what is the makeup of this team? They get
three days to prove it and it kind of is
(18:56):
just that simple. And you're gonna have to go through
teams that have given you fits this year. Colorado State
that was an ugly loss a couple weeks ago when
they were on the road. New Mexico is always going
to be tough no matter who they match up with,
and then obviously Utah State Grand Canyon if they make
it to the championship game. But the one thing I
saw Friday night that makes me look kind of get
a little excited about the aztecs chances heading into the
(19:18):
Mountain West Confence Tournament is you saw the kind of
big three big four And I keep talking about it, BJ, Davis, Miles, Byrd, Magoon,
Gwath and Restix and Waters. Can they mesh well together
because it hasn't always worked this time at times this
season and it feels like one has a big game,
one has kind of taken a back seat and vice versa.
BJ Davis being the bona fide star he was, Miles
Byrd made some really big plays at the beginning of
(19:40):
that second half. It felt like they all kind of
came together. And again we've seen that at times this year,
but now think I do it for three straight games,
and you feel like the depth of the Aztecs, this
is where they might be able to win out because
of the fact that they trust eleven guys to get
legit minutes.
Speaker 3 (19:54):
I think back to the twenty twenty three squad that
ended up in the National championship game.
Speaker 1 (19:58):
You know, they lost to Boys either second to last.
Speaker 3 (20:01):
Game of the regular season, and everyone thought this guy
was falling, and people were kind of disappointed with how
the Aztecs finished out Mountain West regular season play. That
seemed to don't lose again until the National Championship game.
So not saying that's what's gonna happen this year, but
things can change quickly with San Diego State basketball, and
they're entering into Brian Dutcher's best time of year. Excited
to see what it looks like they get going on
Thursday in the Mountain West Tournament.
Speaker 1 (20:21):
All right, quick break here. Maury Brown on the other
side covers Major League Baseball for Forbes. He's the senior
writer there. We're gonna get into a lot with Moury.
Speaker 3 (20:28):
Things get very smart, very fast when Mary Brown joins
the show. So get ready it's coming up next. San
Diego Sports seven sixty live on iHeartRadio app Forbes talking
baseball and motor sports as well.
Speaker 1 (20:39):
Maury, how the heck are you?
Speaker 7 (20:40):
Man?
Speaker 1 (20:40):
It's been too long?
Speaker 5 (20:42):
Yeah, doing great? How are you?
Speaker 3 (20:43):
We're doing good in San Diego? Although there might be
some new ownership coming to San Diego soon. What do
you think about the Padres being up for sale? What
do you think that number could get up to?
Speaker 5 (20:53):
Yeah, this is a great question.
Speaker 7 (20:55):
I would sit there and say that, obviously, it looks
like it's moving forward pretty well. I have not heard
of a front runner, although La Cob seems like a
would be kind of a good one for that in
the sense that you get some understanding of how the
Golden State Warriors have been run.
Speaker 5 (21:16):
You know, I think it's interesting.
Speaker 7 (21:18):
I think that it obviously plays into what the the
Padres have been doing this offseason. But as far as
a number goes, this is really interesting it. I would
think that it would be fairly high. And when I
say that, and mind being kind of loose about like
an exact figure, I say this given the fact that
(21:38):
we don't really know what's going to happen with this
next labored You if, for some reason, and I think
that this is an extreme long shot, that a salary
cap does come into play, then I think that the
number is higher. And I think that that's a large
reason why the League, of course is pushing for a
(21:59):
salary cap.
Speaker 5 (22:00):
It allows you to have cost.
Speaker 7 (22:01):
Certainty around your player payroll, and that is designed, I
think a large part to drive up franchise values. But again,
you know, that seems like a long shot, so I
guess we're going to have to wait and see. You know,
I would think that it would be higher, though, given
the fact that the padres have been in a pretty
good position in terms of their attendance. You know, there's
(22:23):
some questions about how long the player payroll can be
sustained at this rate, but it should be pretty high.
I would think that it's not going to come anywhere
near to what you see for the Yankees or certainly
the Dodgers, but I would look for it somewhere, you know,
in the higher ranges.
Speaker 1 (22:40):
When you see you say it's a long shot they
would likely get a salary cap in in Major League Baseball.
In your opinion, if you're making a prediction, what do
you think they come to agreement on. Is there going
to be at least a salary for or is anything
getting done here?
Speaker 5 (22:55):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (22:55):
I mean I would love I would think that that
would suit the league the best. I mean, we talk
about this. Vanford has said repeatedly that there's concern about competitiveness,
and everybody points to the Dodgers and says that the cap.
But in my mind, it's the bottom that's the larger problem.
I don't think that the owners will ever go for
(23:16):
a floor without tamping down extremely hard at the top.
But there's no denying that there's economic disparity, and it's
the range between the bottom and the top that is
the concern. So I would like to see it that way.
What I'm really hoping for here is the sides have
(23:37):
to get creative and they have to come to an
understanding that a cap seems impossible without losing a sizeable
chuckle regular season games. If not more right, maybe the
whole season. Is it really going to be worth it?
After all the momentum, and you're going into twenty twenty
eight trying to do national TV deals.
Speaker 5 (23:57):
So what I would like to see is is a.
Speaker 7 (24:01):
Luxury tax in reverse, Like, Okay, tighten it up at
the top, increases surcharges, increases the penalties for subsequent years,
all the things that we've done in the past at
the top, and do something at the bottom where teams
at the bottom that go past a certain threshold will
be penalized in some way, shape or form, whether they
receive less revenue sharing. They know if they consistently do it,
(24:24):
they lose draft picks. There has to be something done
at the bottom. So maybe that's one way.
Speaker 5 (24:30):
To do it.
Speaker 1 (24:31):
Maury Brown with Forbes. He's a senior contributed to covering
baseball and motorsports at BISBAL Maury on X.
Speaker 3 (24:38):
You can find him there. Maury, we just got breaking
news in the NFL, not that we're going to talk
to you about this, but to attack of Biloa agreeing
to a one year deal with the Falcons. Left handed
quarterback going to back up a left handed quarterback. We'll
talk about that in just a little bit here, but
that is the breaking news to attack of Bailoa to
the Falcons.
Speaker 1 (24:53):
For those who are curious.
Speaker 3 (24:55):
Maury, it's funny we have these conversations about baseball and
TV deals and all that stuff, and that's all kind
of forgetting sometimes that there may not be a baseball
season in twenty twenty seven.
Speaker 1 (25:05):
Do you think that's what we're heading for?
Speaker 3 (25:06):
Is there a chance nothing gets done here between the
owners and the players and we forfeit a year of
baseball right as baseball starting to get cool again.
Speaker 7 (25:15):
No, No, I mean, look, the worst thing that we
ever had was to strike right, which we'll never have again.
That we had in ninety four to ninety five. We
lost the World Series, and we lost part you know,
basically of the beginning of ninety five to get things
in order.
Speaker 5 (25:33):
I can see some owners saying, you.
Speaker 7 (25:36):
Know what, it just wouldn't really hurt us with the
rainy weather and whatnot for most of the country. Right
it's not speaking of San Diego necessarily, but you know,
the cold of April and May, we start to get
to June, the pressure starts to really get on the owners.
Kids are coming out of school. You know, I can't
see it.
Speaker 5 (25:56):
Going much later than that.
Speaker 7 (25:58):
But I mean, look, I think people forget that the
last time we had a lockout, while we got all
one hundred and sixty two games in the first week,
was when we were scheduled to start went away and
they had to make it up with a bunch of
double headers. They got one hundred and sixty two in
on a compressed schedule, and you just you can't do
that much past a week.
Speaker 5 (26:19):
So could we lose a week and still get one
sixty two like we did last time? Maybe?
Speaker 7 (26:23):
But you know, given the position that the owners have
stated that, you know, they seem to be talking about
seeking a cap, I just I can't see it. So
the most I could see losing might be through may
I just think that they would lose all the momentum
and again the TV deals like you're gonna go into
twenty twenty eight losing the entire season and go, hey,
(26:44):
we would like to see a record amount of money.
You know, again, they're in a horrible position with the
NFL shopping for media rights, which sucks the air out
of the room for everybody. You're gonna try and do
this coming off of a potential you know, law of games,
What kind of credibility do you have in terms.
Speaker 5 (27:03):
Of a product.
Speaker 7 (27:04):
I think the other thing that people don't understand is
most of the time, and maybe this doesn't happen with
a deal upcoming, those METEA rights continue to flow back
to the league. Now those get rebated back to the
rights holders, right.
Speaker 5 (27:20):
So whether it's Fox.
Speaker 7 (27:22):
TBS, ESPN, whoever, right that goes back without interest or
very little bit of interest over time. That doesn't make
your partners happy, doesn't make your sponsors happy, doesn't make
anybody happy. So you're coming off a great season with
great ratings, three years in a row of attendance increases,
(27:42):
and you're going to go ahead and lose games. Man,
that's a heck of a thing to try and pull off.
And remember it's the owners that are largely pushing for this.
Speaker 6 (27:52):
When you look at what's going to be on the
field this year in the NLS, feels like, obviously the
Dodgers are the favorite, is going to win the NLA.
Do you still see the Potters as the second best
team ahead of the Diamondbacks and the Giants or do
you think the Giants and Diamondbacks caught them?
Speaker 5 (28:08):
Yeah, I mean they've caught up a little bit.
Speaker 7 (28:09):
I mean there's some questions as to the back of
the rotation obviously cease and Darbish. You know, we still
don't know what's happening with Darbish there, and there's some
questions around pitching largely. I think that, you know, it's
interesting how the lineup has been recently, basically moving Xander
to the front that lead off and moving Tatis and
(28:31):
to clean up, you know, which has kind of been
an interesting experiment. There's nothing to say that that's going
to happen when we start the regular season, but I
think that that's been kind of an interesting thing to
look at.
Speaker 5 (28:43):
I would hope that they continue to go well.
Speaker 7 (28:45):
Pitching with police the prevailing question for me around the
Potters to begin with, and so this with Darvish hanging
out there doesn't give you a lot of you know
that it gives you pause for thought. I would hope
that they've would be able to find something, even though
here we are at the eleventh hour right that they
would have to try and find somebody. I am imagining
(29:08):
maybe they work that through trades, but again that's the
open question. I mean, do you do something maybe later
on and find some bargain deal. I don't know, but
that's an open question. So those other teams, I think
that you mentioned the Diamondbacks and the Giants do pick
up a little bit. The Rockies, of course they're going
to be the Rockies, but yeah, I mean I'd be
(29:30):
looking a little bit in my rearview mirror at those
two clubs right now and seeing what they're doing and
maybe be a little bit nervous.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
Those poor Rockies.
Speaker 3 (29:38):
They always just get the back Sammy Night talk about
the LST all the time, Bry and then we always
are like, oh yeah, and then the Rockies are there
all the way at the bottom looking up at everybody else.
Speaker 1 (29:47):
I do feel bad about them. I'm happy for Buddy Black.
Speaker 3 (29:50):
You know, Buddy Black was the manager of the Rockies
last year, gets fired. He's back with the Padres now
in some sense helping out Craig Stammon.
Speaker 1 (29:56):
So it'll be good for them. Mari.
Speaker 3 (29:58):
Anything crazy going on in the world of motors sports
that we need to know about.
Speaker 7 (30:02):
Well, I mean, I don't know if anybody's you know,
on the West Coast watched the F one race, but
there's a bunch of wildness.
Speaker 5 (30:09):
Going on there right now.
Speaker 7 (30:11):
So that we have new car regulations and as Max
Verstappan claimed or has said it it reminds him of
Formula E LTE. Some of the drivers have set us
like Mario Karts at the start, which is we had
a very dangerous start. So there's a lot of pressure
on Formula one right now to go ahead and try
and maybe do something about the power plants of these
(30:34):
new engines, which are fifty percent hybrid now right we
have half a lectritap internal combustion. NASCAR seems to be
doing well with their new format and the popularity of
that had helped that. They had Redick win the first
three and any car looks good, so you know, I
mean in a lot of ways the other two. You know,
(30:54):
the major motorsports in North America seem to be on
solid footing right now. Lots of questions with the war
in the Middle East on whether F one is going
to have to cancel two races. Sounds like they probably
will and they're not going to change They're not going
to add some races somewhere else. It's just too late,
so they'll drop down two races in the season. So
(31:15):
Watson talk about there that was really interesting to watch
the Australian race and they're back in the satellite in
Singapore this week, so we'll see how that goes.
Speaker 1 (31:24):
Hey man, we got NASCAR coming to San Diego this summer.
Speaker 5 (31:27):
We can wait for it.
Speaker 1 (31:28):
It's going to be exciting.
Speaker 5 (31:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (31:30):
No, it's that they're I think a really good spot
after coming out of the charter agreement debacle with the
settlements that they had to have.
Speaker 5 (31:37):
Of course, Michael Jordan looks.
Speaker 7 (31:39):
Brilliant now coming out of that, winning the first three
races and having all of the cars that are in
the twenty three to eleven team being really strong, so
you know, kudos to them.
Speaker 3 (31:50):
All right, Well mare, good stuff today. Man, miss hanging
out with you as much as we used to. But
we'll find some time for you pretty soon here to
bring you back. Thank you for your time.
Speaker 1 (31:57):
Appreciate you all right, guys, you take care.
Speaker 5 (32:00):
Thanks so much.
Speaker 1 (32:01):
At bisbal Murray on Maury on ax.
Speaker 3 (32:04):
You can find him there. You can also find him
at Forbes dot com. All right, the phone lines are
already lighting up. Everybody knows what time it is. Call
right now eight seven seven seven sixty seven four seven
sixty collar number.
Speaker 6 (32:16):
Hey eight, you.
Speaker 3 (32:17):
Are winning that four packet tickets to go see the
brand new Elephant Valley at San Diego Zoo Safari Park,
which is now open. Connermory, you're going to the Safari
Park on us here at San Diego Sports seven sixty.
Speaker 1 (32:27):
You're listening live at the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (32:29):
All right, our last trip around the block here and
we got moved. So two attacker by Lois signs with
the Falcons one year deal and then just breaking right now,
Sammy Gardner Minshew to the Cardinals.
Speaker 6 (32:38):
One year, eight point two five million dollars deal, going
to Arizona.
Speaker 1 (32:43):
And joining us in studio.
Speaker 3 (32:45):
The Goat, Gino and Lacy is Lin diehard Raiders fans
something you and I can Football fans, something you and
I can agree on.
Speaker 1 (32:51):
Though we hate the Kansas City Chiefs.
Speaker 4 (32:53):
Oh with a passion and their words and the fans
do my goodness.
Speaker 6 (32:59):
Listen, you hate success, It's okay. I would hate success too.
But like I told Fletch earlier, Kenneth Walker, super Bowl
MVP goes, I'm I'm already breeding a successful mentality. I'm
not gonna go to Denver. I'm not gonna go to
one of these.
Speaker 1 (33:13):
Keep going to other Super Bowl winner conversations with him
off the air, and you know what, you guys got
an amazing pick.
Speaker 4 (33:19):
He's my favorite running back, thank you in the NFL.
He's so patient, he's so good.
Speaker 1 (33:23):
Kenneth Walker is great.
Speaker 3 (33:24):
No one's denying that, but it's hearing him talking about
how one player, one running back, all of a sudden
is gonna change for what was like a third place
Chiefs team last year.
Speaker 1 (33:33):
So all of a sudden, they're gonna be great.
Speaker 6 (33:34):
Hey, trust the process, Trust the off season process.
Speaker 1 (33:37):
Is that was that the Paul George thing Philadelphia.
Speaker 6 (33:40):
It's like gonna take that long. It's gonna take a
couple of months, but it's gonna be fine.
Speaker 1 (33:42):
And Ben Simmons is still so good, so good.
Speaker 6 (33:45):
Gino, how do you feel about Max Crosby.
Speaker 4 (33:49):
I feel like, uh, goodbye, thank you for everything. Let's
move on.
Speaker 6 (33:55):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (33:55):
Picking up Linderbaum and two number ones especially is especially
with a new coach out there in Baltimore.
Speaker 1 (34:04):
We might get a top fourteen pick again next year.
Speaker 4 (34:06):
Maybe, you know, I feel hey, you know what, there's
no loyalty in this game anymore, right, just give us
your best, and I feel like Linderbaum is going to
make that offensive line so much better. JPJ is going
to be better. Colton Miller's great, and then you got
the issue with what is left guard and right tackle.
I'm not convinced yet, and there's still a lot of
money to spend, so hopefully we will get, you know,
(34:30):
get better there.
Speaker 1 (34:30):
I like the signing of Naylor.
Speaker 4 (34:32):
I like bringing in Johnson, he's sneaky good, bringing back Stokes,
so I feel like we're headed in the right direction.
Speaker 1 (34:39):
There's still more to go.
Speaker 3 (34:40):
Can I tell you my favorite move of the day
from the Raiders outside of Linderbaum, because I think that's
great and you're protect you're sending the right message to
the quarterback you're drafting with the number one overall pick.
Speaker 1 (34:48):
Yeah, I love the Jalen Naylor move. Like people absolutely him.
Speaker 3 (34:51):
In Minnesota, Jordan Addison was never on the field, so
Naylor was the number two wide receiver behind Justin Jefferson,
and Naylor was fantastic.
Speaker 6 (35:00):
You know, we were talking about it. With that fourteenth pick,
usual got Makaye Lemon, Carnell, Tate Ross. I mean, there's
a lot of guys that you could get in the
first round could be a star wide receiver.
Speaker 4 (35:08):
I feel like if we don't go after Mackay at fourteen,
we might go right tackle.
Speaker 1 (35:15):
That would be good.
Speaker 4 (35:16):
But I'm I'm fingers crossed that we will get Rodriguez
in the second round.
Speaker 1 (35:21):
That please just wait for it. My take is coming soon.
Raiders are my dark horse playoff team. It's an annual thing.
Speaker 3 (35:27):
I like to say it's the annual Ben Fletcher. Maybe
this year it's true, Gino, thank you for being here.
John Shaffer is coming up next. More SeaWorld or San
diego Zo Safari Park tickets with Shaffer and I'm sure
tons of Aztecs and Padres talk.
Speaker 1 (35:39):
We're out for today. Sam A good show. That was fun.
Speaker 6 (35:41):
That was a blast. Thank you for everyone.
Speaker 1 (35:42):
It tuned in absolutely well.
Speaker 5 (35:44):
The Bust
