think an awesome story going on in the NBA Playoffs,

up his game in a big way.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Last night. The Padres were out in Milwaukee yesterday.
Speaker 4 (00:48):
They take a loss, but the good news is the
Dodgers also lost, So the Padres remained atop the nl
West and we got new spanking NFL games to the
schedule for this year.

We'll kind of react to it all.

You ready to have a great show?
Speaker 5 (01:50):
I am ready to have a great show, like the
greatest show of all time, the best, the best we
can possibly do.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
That's kind of what I'm thinking.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
I got a good feeling about today we got another
major and golf starting tomorrow, we got NBA playoffs.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
Look, last night was a blowout game.
Speaker 4 (02:03):
I loved watching Victor weber Yama get his after the
comments from Anthony Edwards a couple of days before. That
was a lot of fun. The Padres game was a
bit of a struggle for me. If I'm being honest,
and a lot of people are coming on today, kill
Matt Waldron.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
What are you really expecting from Matt Waldron?
Speaker 2 (02:19):
It would be my question.
Speaker 4 (02:20):
He had a blow up fourth inning and he didn't
throw the knuckleball a ton. That would be my criticism
of Matt Waldron's performance. I think he only threw the
knuckleball like twelve times yesterday, and that's what he is.
Speaker 1 (02:30):
He is a.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
Knuckleballer and it was working well for him a week ago.
I don't know why he strayed away from it as
much as he did and it led to a blow up.
And that happens with your fifth starting pitcher, realistically, your
six or seventh starting pitcher, considering who's on the injured list,
and so for Matt Waldron, I still sort of looked
at the offense and I'm like, you guys, could have
picked him up once. I mean Fernando Tazzi's junior grounding
(02:52):
into a double play in a big situation early in
the game. You got Manny Machada with an opportunity in
the eighth to make something happen, it doesn't happen. And
then the ninth inning you get a run across and
then bang bang bang it was for me and it
was Jackson Merril and it was Ramon Loriano. No Loreano
walked in the ninth someone else all kind of go
down right away in the ninth inning with non competitive abs. So, yeah,
(03:14):
Matt Waldron wasn't good. I don't know if we were
expecting him to be great. But the offense, this offense
needs to be put up, be able to put up
some more runs. And that's still my big takeaway from
yesterday's game.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
Right, And yeah, it's it's hard.
Speaker 5 (03:28):
Like I get, it's easy to kind of have certified
patients like you can with the Lakers. You can get
Matt at Jared Vanderbilt, but Jared Vanderbilt gets paid. With
Jared Vanderbilt gets paid, So it's hard for me to
sit here and kill Jared Vanderbilt saying goes for Matt Waldron.
Speaker 4 (03:40):
Matt Waldron Waldron's on his way out, Like that's why
Lucas Giulito was a padre.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Right, He's not gonna be here in a week.
Speaker 5 (03:46):
And look, I get it what you want to expect
greatness from your pitchers.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
And did he have the best night? No?
Speaker 5 (03:53):
But four runs on the road, all right? I give
Tatis credit for getting on the eighth, but they didn't. Really,
you don't do much outside of that. It feels like
the Potteris continually rely on getting the team's bullpens, and
today with the Miz on the mound, you he's unbelievable.
The Potteris could really make a statement if they were
(04:14):
able to be able to get to him, because he
is one of the one of the star young pitchers
in this league. I mean, he had something like twenty
semi pitches last week, throwing one hundred and three.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Miles per hour.
Speaker 5 (04:23):
I don't even know what that dude could do. He
might be all throw harder than Mason Miller if he
was just coming out of the bullpen. I mean, it's
it's unbelievable. Him is a starting pitcher. To watch the
Potter's get a great opportunity today, But it just feels
like this is what happens when you don't hit starting
pitching and you have to wait to team's bullpens and
you step up in competition and the Brewers, you know,
(04:43):
they got you Rebay and Trevor McGill, who yellans is
back all of a sudden right in that bullpen for
the Brewers is very good. That's one of the strengths
of their team. Urebay and McGill have been a nice
one to two kind of punch the last couple of
years in the bullpen. So yeah, it's it's the potteris
have to find ways to knock these artist out of
the game. It doesn't get any easier today. But then again,
(05:04):
I want to see the Patres face the best and
if you want to go make a statement, you got
to go do it against a pitcher like like you're
going to see today.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
Your rebate in the ninth was pretty scary, Like I thought,
the Padres kind of got gifted with Ramon Loriano with
the lead off walk and then couldn't really get anything.
Speaker 5 (05:16):
And they kind of got to McGill, to their credit,
who is used to be the closer. And you Rebate
took his job. So yeah, it's uh they got they
got a big opportunity today.
Speaker 4 (05:24):
Andre's best hitter this season. Miguel and haharf with another
home run. This ky this guy dude in the eighth inning,
he was the one who hit the sack or not
the sack fly.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
He hit it over the center.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Wall, dropped it. Yeah. Again, we did get a.
Speaker 4 (05:40):
Little Tatis sparkle yesterday going first to third on the
pass ball.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
Which was good to see.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
Look, you we need to celebrate these big Tazis moments
when they happened. They're happening a few and far between,
but that's something like a few years ago. We're like, oh,
just Fernando being Fernando. Uh, and he made it happen
last night. I love it when Tazis said stuff like that, man,
and it got me fired up a little bit. Wish
for a little bit more out of the offense, and
that could have been a difference. I saw this stat
about the Padres this year that honestly blew my mind.
(06:06):
It was in the last twenty two games, if they've
scored at least four runs, they've won all but two
of them. Until yesterday, they scored four runs lost yesterday,
So now it's isn't that wild?
Speaker 5 (06:20):
It goes back to what we were talking about yesterday.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
The pitching has been phenomenal.
Speaker 5 (06:23):
It's I'm sure, like they're never gonna come out and
say this, but I'm sure if you're one of the
members of the bullpen has started pitching staff, you're going like,
come on, guys, I don't know what we have to do.
And considering that the starting pitching staff we of the
bullpen was going to be unbelievable that that was you
lose Robert Suarez, but you know Estrada and Adam and
(06:43):
of course Miller. You have so many guys in that bullpen.
The patre is doing an excellent job of developing bullpen talent.
And if the starting pitching staff, yeah, it's a sixteenth
they're sixteenth in era. But considering the injuries the Paveda
and Musgrove and the gi leader hasn't even thrown yet,
that's very impressive. I think a lot of people would
it taken in sixteenth with all the injuries they've had
if you would have told him that before the season.
(07:04):
It really comes out of the bats. If you're gonna
beat good teams like the Brewers, Mariners, and Dodgers. You
have to get the bats going. And we were really
looking at at the.
Speaker 4 (07:11):
Stars and it'd be really nice to start taking advantage
of the Dodgers bad play because.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
They're missing, they've been playing off.
Speaker 4 (07:16):
They're miserable right now, and they lost again yesterday to
the Giants. Did you notice the Giants outfield news yesterday
did not do the weird cut of gyration motion they
did the night before A little lot yesterday they just
did a very respectful bow.
Speaker 5 (07:30):
By the way that we were talking about this before
the show, Luis a Rise. All of a sudden, the
second base go glover.
Speaker 4 (07:36):
He made a diving play a couple of days ago.
Luisa Rise looks like an incredible defensive player. Now he
was not that with the padres. All right, set up
the show a little bit here. Caleb Davis, the Aztecs
general manager for the football team, we're just a couple
of months away now from football getting going again, college
football getting going again. I think we're four months away
from the NFL, which means we're like three months and
a week two weeks away from college football really being
(07:59):
a part of our everyday life. So we're gonna talk
to Caleb about how the off season's going, the big
move to the PAC twelve, what that means for the
program coming up at twelve thirty. And then at one fifteen,
our buddy Ja Silves on YouTube said, I'm getting a
little pitch action tonight for your boy at the Murph
Dragon saw us is on fire in San Antonio. We
are gonna be checking in with our I'm gonna call
(08:19):
him our soccer insider, our soccer correspondent. His name is
Tony Sanchez, hosts a podcast called Two Balls and a
Mike here in San Diego about SDFC. He's gonna be
on with us. Coming up at one fifteen, Sammy, let's
get to the Big Three, where we ripped through the
top stories in the world of sports.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
SETI smash your lunch break is here?
Speaker 3 (08:39):
Ready to go back to the office and knock the
socks off your friends, I mean co workers. Good time
for the top stories of the day, the Big Three Three.
Speaker 4 (08:50):
We got stats on YouTube, Sammy, our Puddy Rich said
Sammy did not take into account a pissed off Wembin
Yama at home. Sammy has bet the Spurs to lose
five times this year and the Spurs have beat the
spread all five.
Speaker 5 (09:04):
No, I can't even Rich called me out. He's right.
I have not believed in the Spurs multiple times this year,
and Wemby has made me pay every time.
Speaker 1 (09:12):
I love that storyline.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
By the way, Anthony Edwards saying the Spurs were tougher
when Wemby was off the court and then Wemby comes
out twenty seven points, seventeen rebounds puts on a master
class last night.
Speaker 5 (09:24):
Unbelievable. Do you think the series is done? Because I don't.
Speaker 4 (09:27):
I don't think it's done. I think Minnesota's gonna fire
right back. But the play last night that kind of
just is on repeat in my head. Wenby gets the
ball at the top of the key, squares up Rudy
Gobert on him, two dribbles to the left, spin move,
kind of could have dunked it, just lays it up
over the rim. It's unguardable. You can't stop it. He
is phenomenal man.
Speaker 5 (09:48):
And with a guy like Wemby you saw last night,
he forced to go bear off the floor and the
Timberlves kept it semi close because the Spurs missed so
many threes at the end of the first half where
they could have kind of put the game out of reach,
but he forced Rudy Gobert off the four, who's one
of the best defensive bigs in the game. It's so
tricky because you got to have the bigs out there.
But Party is like, if you're not gonna stop Wenby anyway,
(10:09):
just go all offense to see if you can out pace.
Speaker 4 (10:11):
Him, right and go Beart can't guard him at the
three point line, right, he can take him off the
dribble every time.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
All right, where are we going, Sam?
Speaker 2 (10:16):
All right, let's go to Let's go to golf.
Speaker 5 (10:18):
So very excited at PGA Championship starting tomorrow out in Philadelphia.
But so Rory is the second favorite. Scotty, I believe
is a three plus three ten favorite. Rory's checking in
at plus nine to forty, so Scotty is definitely a
big favorite in the field. But Rory is dealing with
a blister on his toe, so he didn't play very
well at the Truest Championship last weekend. He only played
(10:38):
three holes yesterday in a practice round and then decided
to go back in to get treatment on it. How
big of a deal is this blister and will it
affect Rory overall this weekend?
Speaker 1 (10:48):
Dah, dude, Blisters are a problem with golf.
Speaker 4 (10:49):
You've ever seen the episode of the Office where Andy
is out at the driving range beforehand, it's like a
thousand balls the night before he has blister's all over
his hand. It is a problem, to be honest, like
days of not just the golf you're playing. And let's
say he shoots seventy two every day, like right, or
seventy even part for the tournament. That's seventy shots on
the course. There's also seven hundred shots off the course
(11:13):
he's taken every day he's at the driving range. It
is a problem. I don't know that it should impact
his betting lines. I'll tell you there are a few
people playing really good golf right now. How about a
little blast from the pass. Have you've seen what Ricky
Fowler's been doing? I know, playing well, you know our
guy Ricky is playing phenomenal like contention here.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
I I really don't know.
Speaker 4 (11:32):
I'm very excited for this tournament, beautiful golf course. This
is going to be a very very fun couple of days.
Speaker 5 (11:38):
I'm I hope it's not a factor. I really hope
it's not too much of a factor. You know, eighty
North was talking about how he didn't think it was.
Golfers deal with this all the time. But there's a
lot kind of riding on this tournament. Because Rory wins
the last two matters. I don't think a lot of
people thought he was going to repeat after this year.
He hadn't really been playing that great at golf after
(11:59):
he won the Asters the year before, did play well
at the Ryder Cup.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
Now where Scotty.
Speaker 5 (12:04):
Yet, Scotty's had three second place finishes this year, and
we kind of just anoint it rightfully. So Scotty is
the guy when Rory was kind of slumping and all
of a sudden, Rory's kind of getting back into that picture.
Can Scotty defend it? I'm really excited he's gonna be
someone else. You mentioned a Ricky Fowler and a Berts
you know got good odds. John rom jam Young's.
Speaker 1 (12:23):
Been playing terrific.
Speaker 4 (12:24):
Tyrell Hatton, who the text line swears is my ten twin,
is playing fantastic. Everyone's in contention here. My favorite golfer
right now. Chris got her up. Hopefully he's in contention
this week. It's gonna be a very, very fun week.
Speaker 5 (12:37):
All right, let's go to Let's go to Philadelphia. It's
for all our Philly fans on the text line, kind
of shocking. So Nick Nurse staying as head coach of
the Philadelphia seventy six ers, but Darryl Moury, ousted, considered
one of the best gms in the league, will no
longer be the GM for Philadelphia.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
Was this a good move for Philly?
Speaker 1 (12:54):
I was anyone keeping their job in Philly. You just
got swept.
Speaker 4 (12:57):
You just got swept after being one of the highlights
of the first round of the NBA postseason.
Speaker 1 (13:03):
It ain't working.
Speaker 4 (13:05):
This is a team that I seriously thought could contend
in the East this year, and you get swept and
blown out. I don't care if em Bean's on the
quart or not. You gotta have collateral plans for Joel Embiid.
When can you expect him to be on the court?
Pretty putrid, man. The trust the process thing is dead
and going. I I where Mary Simmons.
Speaker 5 (13:23):
Moury got himself fired with two decisions. Number one he
gave Joel Embiid coming off of Minissi's tear and a
cleanup and when usually you're a you're a big time
center who has massive injury histories, giving that pick of
a contract is not usually smart. And Jared McCain in
this series against the Lakers for the thunder might have
got him fired. You had the going to be rookie
(13:44):
of the year on your team until he got hurt
late in the season. Jared McCain had lost it. And
Jared McCain, you trade him for a bag of chips
to Oklahoma City and he's coming off the bench having
twelve point performance, his fifteen point performances eighteen point unbelievable.
Darryl Morey, Look, he's a good GM. He will land
on his feet somewhere. But I probably smart to move on.
(14:04):
If I was Philadelphia, I build around Maxie and get
rid of Embiat.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
But I don't know how much trade value and beat
has right now.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
What type of chips did they trade him for?
Speaker 5 (14:12):
It was a good kettle, It was a good salt
and vinegar.
Speaker 4 (14:15):
By the way, if you tried the naked doritos, No,
the naked doritos they like took.
Speaker 1 (14:20):
All the food.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
Coloring out of them.
Speaker 4 (14:22):
Phenomenal, really like, I almost like them better than normal Doritos.
Speaker 2 (14:26):
That's spicy. I'm gonna have to try those.
Speaker 4 (14:29):
They happily white bag and it's a really, really tasting.
Speaker 5 (14:32):
Netflix just announced so Quarterback season three, premiering July fourteenth.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
Here's the cast.
Speaker 5 (14:39):
Jayden Daniels please don't say it, Joe Flacco, don't say it.
Baker Mayfield all good? Cam Ward?
Speaker 1 (14:45):
All good?
Speaker 2 (14:45):
Do you like that? That list?
Speaker 1 (14:47):
Anything with Baker? And I'm here for I think that, dude?
Speaker 2 (14:49):
Is I know you?
Speaker 4 (14:51):
I love myself some Baker Mayfield man, Yeah, I'm good
with it. Cam Ward, I'll be interested to see.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
Give me the names.
Speaker 4 (14:57):
Joe Flacco, cam Ward, Baker Mayfield and and Ja Daniels
Jayden de okay, this is actually kind of fascinating. I
like this group and I don't really care about even
though I'm curious to see, like, what is the guy
who should be retired?
Speaker 2 (15:09):
Do uh?
Speaker 4 (15:10):
The Jaden Daniels one fascinating, Baker Mayfield great TV?
Speaker 1 (15:14):
And cam Ward.
Speaker 4 (15:15):
I still feel like he was the most under publicized
first overall draft pick.
Speaker 1 (15:20):
Maybe in the history right people did not talk.
Speaker 5 (15:22):
Maybe it's because he went to Tennessee. I don't know,
but I'm with you. I like this grouping because the
quarterback doc with who is in Mahomes, Mariota, and Cousins
was good because they followed the stories of them training.
The Kirk Cousins became way more likable because of that totally.
And it was like you saw with Mariota like you
felt bad. I remember he got banched and cut that year.
(15:43):
Like you kind of saw the other side of it
the receiver. When they tried to do the same thing
with the receivers, it wasn't as great because they just
kind of went game by game was less about their
kind of prep and their backstory is more about It's
like I watched the game, so I know what happened.
Speaker 2 (15:56):
Quarterback.
Speaker 5 (15:56):
I'm excited for this because cam Ward talk about being underpublicized.
He you're expecting a second year jump from him. Did
Tennessee do enough around him? And then you look at Daniels,
like Daniels was We're talking having conversations about is he
a top five quarterback after that rookie season, whether due
to injuries last year to a lack of a roster construction,
kind of people forgotten about him. I wonder if Daniels
(16:17):
gets back in that picture. So I'm excited for you this.
I like the four that they chose.
Speaker 4 (16:21):
All right, We're gonna take a quick break here, Russell
Dickerson tickets coming up this hour. We got Caleb Davis
coming up this hour to talk to Masteks football during
the offseason, but coming up next interesting timing. Labor negotiations
have kind of begun in Major League Baseball with the
MLB and the MLBPA. Safe to say nothing's getting done yet.
(16:41):
We'll tell you all the updates on the other side
at San Diego Sports seven sixty Live Myheart Radio app defensive.
Looking forward to seeing some of the guys from last year.
Tonald Latouley making his way back, one of the senior captains.
Interested to see how his recovery is going from the
injury he had at the end.
Speaker 1 (16:57):
Of last year.
Speaker 4 (16:58):
We'll talk to Caleb Davis coming up in a little
bit to get the full update on Aztex football. This
is the text line, not me, but I'm gonna read it.
Nine to one to three. Fletch, would you trade Manny
Machado and Tatis straight up for Kyle Schwarber if you could.
Speaker 1 (17:12):
This team needs consistence.
Speaker 2 (17:14):
Look both of them for Kyle Swarber.
Speaker 4 (17:16):
I would know one I would consider, Manny. I don't
think I could do Tatsis straight up just because of
the age. Well, Manny, you I mean, I don't think
the Phillies would do that with the contract.
Speaker 5 (17:29):
Philly, I'm gonna answer the question like this, There is
no way the Phillies would trade Kyle Schwarber for many.
Speaker 4 (17:34):
Machian Right now, many machatda is the cheapest he will
be for the duration of this contract. It jumps up
to forty million dollars a year very very soon. It
is a long contract. Man. I don't think the Phillies
would do it either. I don't look Kyle Schwarber. Is
he thirty two, thirty three something like that.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
Yeah, he's on his way out too, man I.
Speaker 4 (17:52):
And he's gonna be another expensive, aging veteran who is
gonna hit twenty five home runs for the next five
years and make twenty five thirty million dollars for the
next five years. All right, let's see what else we
got here.
Speaker 5 (18:03):
One nine signing injured joelmb to Max three years and
Paul George to a Max contract. It's one of the
worst GM decisions ever and probably the main reason Morey
got zipped, loved.
Speaker 2 (18:12):
The show, Brian, Brian, we love you, We love you, Brian. Ay.
I forgot about the Paul George signing.
Speaker 5 (18:17):
That was Paul George has single handly built multiple dynasties,
just not with the team that he signed with or
was traded to, which is.
Speaker 2 (18:25):
Just such a good point frustrating.
Speaker 4 (18:27):
Oh man, I presno, State's never been the same since
he left. All right, Uh, if you are curious about
what's happening in the world of Major League Baseball, things
are good, man. I think baseball is on an uptick.
The ABS system is working out beautifully. The pitchclock, which
so many people were standing on soapboxes saying do not
put the pitch clock into this.
Speaker 1 (18:47):
Game, has worked like a charm.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
Man.
Speaker 4 (18:49):
I think baseball is incredibly watchable right now. The popularity
is rising in spite of the entire offseason being oh
my god, the Dodgers have created a cheat code.
Speaker 1 (18:58):
They're gonna win every game bubba bh blah blah.
Speaker 4 (19:00):
No, baseball is on the rise right now, and I
think it's very very watchable all across the sport. However,
that's knowing that there is a brick wall coming on
December thirty first this year, and that brick wall is
the current bargaining agreement running out between Major League Baseball
the owners and Major League Baseball the players.
Speaker 1 (19:20):
And so yesterday they had.
Speaker 4 (19:22):
One of their first new meetings since they first initially met,
and conversations have restarted, right And so they went to
the table yesterday. None of the main players were there,
but it was just a conversation where they were exchanging ideas.
The report coming out of it nothing has changed, both
sides equally still dug in. No agreements have been passed
(19:43):
back or forth across the table. They did talk about
some of the things outside of the salary cap that
they want to get done, which is service time, which
is the international draft. They want to make it a
draft instead of a signing pool, and maybe that comes.
But last time they brought this up, the players wanted
it to be two hundred and six see million dollars
guaranteed to the international class.
Speaker 1 (20:02):
The owners wanted it to be like one sixty.
Speaker 4 (20:05):
So they were over one hundred million dollars apart from
each other. And I don't know that they've gotten any
closer on that. But the conversation about the cap is
the interesting one because I think the owners are already
in the mindset of, well, we're gonna throw this out
there as something similar to what the NBA is doing
or something similar to the NHL.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
NFL probably would never go for it.
Speaker 4 (20:24):
That is, the owners have so much power in the NFL,
the players associations would never even sit down at the table.
Here's my thinking on the whole thing. And ESPN actually
did a really good job breaking this down. I know
The Athletic has an article up about it too. We've
been talking about this for a year. We've all known
this has been coming for a year, and we're just
waiting and everyone's just waiting to throw anything across the table,
(20:45):
like December is gonna be here, and what seven to
eight months? Like, if you can't get something done in
seven or eight months, what the hell are we doing.
Speaker 5 (20:54):
I also think that it's like we can get this
maybe a little bit more later, but what is to
do to baseball? Because I really think baseball, to what
you just kind of mentioned, has been on an uptick.
I mean, baseball ten fifteen years ago was not a
dying sport, but it certainly was declining in popularity as
others were rising because so many people were just stuck
(21:15):
in their waist. They didn't want to have a runner
on second extras, they didn't want to have a pitchclock.
Now you got ABS. Baseball was so against change, and
I think all three of those things, ABS, run around second,
and pitchclock have been excellent for the game of baseball,
and I think added a lot of new fans who
either didn't follow it or kind of lost their way
because of how long the season was.
Speaker 2 (21:37):
I just wonder what not having a season.
Speaker 5 (21:41):
Does for Major League Baseball, because does it create more
angs for baseball? So when it comes back, the ratings
go through the roof because people just want baseball or
is it kind of forgotten about it on the back burner?
And then baseball is trying to have to rebuild like
the all the women have they gain. I don't know
(22:02):
that we see it in San Diego because it's the
one of the major foreign town right, But in cities
where they're competing with NFL teams and NBA teams and
big time colleges, you're fighting for a piece of the pie.
And unless you're the Dodgers, Cubs, Yankees, or Red Sox,
it's kind of hard to sustain that.
Speaker 4 (22:19):
You know, there's just so much on ramp. Figure it
out between now and December. Don't lose the fan base
that you're building. And ultimately, the only people who suffer
during these negotiations are fans, and please try to keep
that in mind, all right, San Diego Sports seven sixty
Caleb Davis on the other side, he's the Aztecs football GM.
We'll get a little preview from him coming up next
of the San Diego State Aztecs football team.
Speaker 1 (22:38):
Caleb, how are you, man? How's the off season treating you?
Speaker 3 (22:42):
Man?
Speaker 6 (22:42):
I am, I'm absolutely great. I appreciate you for having
me on.
Speaker 4 (22:45):
Yeah, we're stoked to have you. Look, the countdown is on, Caleb.
I don't know if you know this, but football is
just around the corner. We were just having a conversation.
We're like fourths away from the NFL, which means we're
what three months and three weeks away from the start
of college football.
Speaker 1 (22:59):
Does it feel like everything starting to heat up fast?
Speaker 2 (23:02):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (23:02):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (23:02):
Now, our schedule it never ends. So it's funny. As
soon as we flip the page from the portal, you
go straight into spring ball and then you get done
with Spring visits Spring Bowl, and it's right into high
school OV So we're prepping recruiting the next set of
Aztecs right now and just trying to find ways to
get around the community and keep on elevating this program.
Speaker 5 (23:21):
How do you change scouting versus looking at high school
players and scouting that versus the transfer portal? Is it
just kind of a broad sweeping look across the country.
Are you guys targeting certain regions.
Speaker 6 (23:33):
No, I think local recruiting is always best, Like, it
doesn't matter where you're at, if you get kids. I
always describe this to parents and kids as they come
sit in my office, like every kid's gonna get homesick.
I went to college twenty minutes from home, and I
get homesick on the weekends, And so it always helps
being able to retain kids year to year and recruit
(23:54):
kids and help captivate the community if you got that
local talent. So we'll scour the entire country for the portal,
try to find our most productive fits, and then high
school recruiting is generally more tailored to local base California base,
and then branch out into some of our sub sectors
(24:14):
out there, whether that's the PNW Arizona, Texas with an
emphasis on local recruiting.
Speaker 4 (24:21):
Caleb Davis was the general manager of a Mountain West
team is now a general manager of a PAC twelve team. Caleb, congratulations.
I've been saying that about myself as a broadcaster too,
which I feel pretty excited about.
Speaker 1 (24:33):
But looking heading into the PAC twelve, how did.
Speaker 4 (24:35):
That change if it did anything for you guys this offseason,
having the name brand with it, having the schedule that
you have coming up, what did that mean being in
the PAC twelve heading into next season for the program?
Speaker 2 (24:47):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (24:47):
Man, the move to the PAC twelve is just so
huge for us just from a branding national scope of
getting eyes on the Aztecs every single Saturday, and a
big piece that is just the chance to compete for
national championships where we know, more often than not we
win the tact World Championship. We're going to be playing
(25:07):
the college football playoffs and that piece is so key.
But then even with the branding from the television deal,
you know, being USA Network, like there are so many
households they're going to have access to Aztec football. That again,
it's a game changer. It's a new branding approach, and
it gives us the opportunity to really focus on creating
(25:28):
the next dominant West Coast football program.
Speaker 2 (25:31):
What is Chris Johnson?
Speaker 5 (25:32):
The fact that he gets taken the first rounds of
the Miami Dolphins, Like, what does that do for recruiting?
Speaker 6 (25:37):
Does?
Speaker 5 (25:37):
I'd assume it would really help it and that you
get to pump out first round draft picks.
Speaker 6 (25:43):
It's definitely huge just him being a first rounder, but
it's just a testament of who the kid is. And like,
the biggest impact we get from it is again, all
the guys on the team. They saw how Chris went
to work every single day, Like it's no surprise why
he sits down an interview rooms with nflgms and NFL
scouts and why every single one would text us after like,
(26:05):
holy cow, you got you got a special kid. It's like, yeah,
he attacks all his work the right way. So the
insight it gives into our program is great. But man,
it's just so great for the kid, and it's just
more proof of concept where if you stay, you've got
a chance to be living out all your dreams, not
just in the NFL, but as an NFL first round pick.
Speaker 4 (26:28):
Caleb Davis, general manager for the Aztecs football team, joining
us today ahead of the twenty twenty six as Text
football season.
Speaker 1 (26:35):
Now, Caleb, I want.
Speaker 4 (26:36):
Your thoughts on the quarterback room here because Stone Saunders
stunned a little bit at the spring game and he's
a red shirt freshman and backup quarterback Jaden Dinegal is
back this year, and.
Speaker 1 (26:46):
That's kind of where I want to start. Jayden Denegal.
Speaker 4 (26:49):
A lot of people, I don't think know how difficult
of a season it was from him health wise a
year ago, but still kind of gutted it out throughout
the whole year. What can we expect from Jaden this
year if he is fully healthy heading in the season.
Speaker 6 (27:01):
Yeah, Well, first off, Jaden's fully healthy, so that's that's
a blessing where we're so happy because he's a kid
who's never been injured in his life. And then three
snaps into being the starter, his non throwing shoulder pops
out of place.
Speaker 1 (27:14):
So just throughout the year.
Speaker 6 (27:15):
You know, he was getting injections to just be able
to be healthy and play for us on Saturdays, so
he didn't get to practice to the level that we
would have liked for him to be able to. But
my favorite thing about Jaden is the fact that he
never used any of that as an excuse. He went out,
had a heck of a season. And my other favorite
thing is, you know, his shoulder pops out of place
(27:35):
and the very next drive he's trying to truck a
defender with the same shoulder right to get a first
down Like that. Kid just displayed so much toughness and
to have some continuity at that position going into year
three of the Sean Lewis era. But Jaden's second year here,
that's so key because he's seen things he's done on
Saturdays and now it's just you know, really put the
(27:57):
ball down and elevate into next year.
Speaker 5 (27:59):
Is there a player that maybe Aztec fans aren't familiar
with right now that you think is kind of going
to become a household name in San Diego as the
year goes on.
Speaker 6 (28:09):
Yeah, Sue, I can name quite a few. We had
had a great spring ball. You know, there's a dynamic
kid that coming from Colorado State a year ago, Javon
Chopkinard who was by Choppies. He was dynamic for for
the season ticket holders that got an inside look in
the snap Dragon scrimmage. He was the one second play
(28:29):
he was in there, took an eighty yard run to
the house. So he's dynamic, he's he's a lot of fun.
There's a linebacker that came over, local kid from Bosco
from the Trinity League named Sione Halla. He spent some
time at Boston College, went to Weaver State and is
now here for his last season. But he's going to
be a main stay right next to Tonno Lutuli in
the linebacker room. But you know, we did a great
(28:51):
job in the portal. But the other highlight was some
of these local high school kids are really showing out
for us. And again I never expect for a freshman
to come in and play right away, but even the
Carson Deals from La Jolla, the Campernell's from Lincoln, Like,
we were really really blessed with some of the kids
we were to bring into the portal, and I think
we're going to be able to know those names for
(29:13):
years to come.
Speaker 4 (29:14):
Yeah, someone else, Derek Stevenson, a true freshman from Katie, Texas,
could end up being a big piece of the team
this year. We can't go any further without talking about
Lucky Sutton, who is I think is this year.
Speaker 1 (29:25):
Four for Lucky in the Aztecs program. Maybe three?
Speaker 4 (29:27):
I could be wrong on that, but a guy who's
been a huge ambassador. Obviously, what's a high school here
in San Diego one of the most experienced college football
running backs in the country heading into this year, Caleb,
what are you looking at for Lucky this year?
Speaker 6 (29:44):
Lucky is the fact that this kid craves work, he
craves getting better. The players are off here as their
finals got finished up over last week, and I already
know he's whether it's locally or whether it's with some
NFL guys, he's already trained and working to get better.
This kid, like we had to try to hold him
out of practice because he wanted to contact. He wanted
(30:05):
to think. He's like, no, Lucky, but we need you
to stay healthy. So he's another example where you know,
if Chris Johnson doesn't stay a year ago, I don't
know if Lucky stays this year, because he could have
gotten anywhere in the country being a thirteen hundred yard
back and gotten paid a whole lot more money. But
a local kid who loves this community and is San
(30:26):
Diego Aztec through and through, like you can't put a
price on what that means. So we love Lucky to death.
I'm excited to see him continue to keep growing as
a leader, but I'm really excited he's gotten even a
lot better this spring and he's attacking all his deficiencies
to make sure he's not just the best running back
in the conference next year, but the best in the
(30:47):
entire country.
Speaker 1 (30:47):
I can't wait to see him play this year.
Speaker 6 (30:49):
Man.
Speaker 4 (30:49):
I've loved watching his work ethic from the time he
first stepped on the MESA. And how about having Lucky
on the offensive side Tonnel on the defensive side too.
Great ambassadors for the program, two really really great leaders
for the program as well.
Speaker 1 (31:01):
Caleb.
Speaker 4 (31:01):
Before we let you go, I'm curious, like, if you
can almost take your general manager hat off for a
second and look at the college football Playoff as a fan,
what do you think about if it potentially expands even
further than the twelve team college Football Playoff? What are
your thoughts on the whole, the thing as a whole,
and where it's going with college football.
Speaker 6 (31:19):
You know, the funny thing is, I'm really indifferent in
it as a whole, and I think a lot of
that is from my experience of being at Cincinnati where
we built a playoff team when no one said a
G six team could make the playoffs. And then you know,
go to Notre Dame where people said, oh, yeah, you
haven't been to a national championship, haven't won since nineteen
eighty eight, and we got to break through. And did
we get all the way there, No, but we were
(31:41):
right there in the punch with a punch to try
to win at the end. And now it's here, whether
it's twelve team, whether it's twenty fourteen. You know, I
think there's a lot of people in the country where
it's like, man, can I pack twelve team, you know,
get into the playoffs? Like I'm not even focused on that.
I'm focused on winning in the playoffs. Like I think
we've got a phenomenal culture. You know, going into year
(32:02):
three in the program, it's so exciting because because y're one,
you see, you know, you got to build that culture,
build that energy. Year two we took a step to
really show the proof of concept that that we have
what it takes now year three to just keep on elevating,
you know, whether it's a twelve team playoff, twenty fourteen Playoff.
I don't care. All I know is when the Aztecs
(32:23):
make it, whether it's this year in the near future,
We're not going to just take part. We're going to
find ways to get wins and compete for national championships
for years to come.
Speaker 5 (32:33):
Obviously exciting with the PAC twelve. Feel like, definitely the
competition is gonna gonna up. But we did see with
the basketball program and the importance of a non conference
schedule and being able to get in if like the
you know, the Mount West is here was down in
terms of basketball, does that change the way you schedule
if it's twenty four teams, do you guys look to
go out and get stiffer competition in the non conference
or is it the other way where you just think
(32:54):
you can win the Pac twelve and get in the playoff.
Speaker 6 (32:58):
You know, it's a great question that I think there's
a lot of people kind of discussing talking about how
it could change. It definitely could change some things now.
I think that's one of the other really really cool
things about the Pac twelve is we've got some leadership
that are truly visionary with our with our flex week
at the end of the season, where essentially like that's
(33:18):
that's a week that helps align the PAC twelve with
the playoffs. That whether you know, it ends up being
a second game against the team up north, or it
ends up being another game against one of the other opponents,
whatever sets us up better for the playoffs. The PAC
twelve is really visionary as a conference to give us
the best shot to where again two three years from now.
(33:42):
All I know is we've got great leadership that's going
to help guide the guide the way to help us
get to the playoffs every single year.
Speaker 4 (33:48):
Down now in the days man September fifth, snap Dragon Stadium,
San Diego State, Portland State.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
Cannot wait for it. Go astex dot com.
Speaker 4 (33:55):
I know season tickets did go on a bit of
a discount over the last few weeks. You can check
them all out there. Taylor Pleasure talking to you man.
Can't wait to see you again out at Snappy and
we'll talk soon.
Speaker 6 (34:06):
Man. I appreciate you guys for having me on. Get
your season tickets and come support because we're fired up
for this year.
Speaker 1 (34:11):
Get your season tickets now.
Speaker 4 (34:12):
It was a great year last year, looking to expand
on it this year into a new conference, and like
you said, Man win the Pac twelve. You got a
pretty good shot a beating in the college football playoff.
Speaker 1 (34:20):
All right, quick break here long shots.
Speaker 4 (34:22):
On the other side, we're not talking about yesterday's long
shots at all at all. Winter on Monday, not talking
about Tuesday. Back to it on Wednesday. Let's get after
it next San Diego Sports seven sixty live on Myheart
radio app. Sammy's heating up for real on his morning
Tennis picks, and even Medvedev yesterday.
Speaker 5 (34:39):
Was if I've a rude one and three sets over
catching on have that rude? Unfortunately last night, so I
believe in.
Speaker 1 (34:48):
Minnesota we weren't talking about it.
Speaker 5 (34:51):
No, we gotta be honest with people. They put money
on it. Rich called me out. I appreciate it. Listen,
I went against the Spurs. I thought ant Man had
something and the Ducks going to otank that Dan dorifiad Man,
Jack Iicole turnover on their own in their own zone.
Ot excellent game last night. But uh yeah, we gotta
get a little get back to that.
Speaker 4 (35:11):
Uh there's a number from the six to one nine
our listener, Brian, who always sends incredible texts. I'm gonna
skip through the stats and get to the thing that
I think is fascinating about the text. He says, A
personal observation is it seems there are less player slash
coach at Jackson's in baseball this year so far because
they don't have to yell at the ump they can
just challenge, which makes the game a bit more boring.
Speaker 2 (35:32):
From Brian, that's interesting.
Speaker 4 (35:34):
We haven't seen as many like bubble gum swapping arguments
with managers and umpires this year, and I don't even
know that I was aware it was missing from the
game as much as it has been.
Speaker 1 (35:44):
But Brian, that is an excellent point, and that is.
Speaker 4 (35:46):
Part of baseball that seems to have left a little
bit without people just having to yell at ups for
ball strikes, calls and being able to tap the helmet immediately.
Speaker 2 (35:56):
Yeah, it is it docinating. It adds something with the crowd.
Speaker 1 (35:59):
I think, well, it is like it's a game of
Jeopardy every time.
Speaker 2 (36:02):
I like it.
Speaker 1 (36:03):
When they showed up on the JumboTron, I think it's fun.
Speaker 5 (36:05):
I think it's fun and it really I mean, what
do they always say baseball the hardest three outs, the
final three outs. It puts even more pressure on that
because if you have an ABS challenge, the last pitch
of the game is all unless it's you know, pop
up or something is always going to be challenged.
Speaker 2 (36:20):
But I think it's fun.
Speaker 4 (36:21):
All right, let's get to long shots for today. We
got a lot of baseball in action today. We got
an excellent game five between Cleveland and Detroit. Tonight tennis
is going on as we speak, Sammy Smash.
Speaker 1 (36:34):
You looking for some luck.
Speaker 3 (36:36):
I want to win big.
Speaker 1 (36:39):
It was so miney. We don't even know what time
to take a chance. Say that to me and his
money with long shots, Janick Sinner tomorrow morning, four am.
Speaker 2 (36:49):
That's where we're starting.
Speaker 5 (36:50):
Hell yeah, brother taking on Andre Rubylev ruby Lev, twelfth
ranked player in the world. Now he's a massive favorite Sinner.
So this is there's no there's no money in the
money line. Here's where we're going under. If you're on
Kalshi under eighteen and a half games, I mean Centner
gets him in the in two sets. Here's why Center
(37:11):
has beats him ruby Lev. He's played him ten times,
one seven to three. Now in two of Rubylev's wins
have come via retirement. So in one of those that
was his only Clay Court win was when Center had
to retire early. Look Andre ruby Lev, he has a
very good first serve, but he's not a great defensive player.
He usually gets a lot of guys. He's an overpowering serve.
(37:33):
Except here's the problem when you're playing Giannick Center. Giannick
Center's maybe the best defensive returner in all of in
all of in all of tennis. His EL percentage is
number one on Clay. He's getting ready to go for
Roland Garrels. I think Center mops him. I think we're
headed for a Medvedev Center final in Rome the week
before Roland Garrels, which would be very fun. I like
(37:55):
under eighteen and a half games. I think Center wins
it in straight sets with the only way to get
a little value is under eighteen and a half games.
Speaker 4 (38:02):
For just one second, can I interject real quick, because
I want to tell you how impressed I am with you, Sammy,
you're breaking down Andre Rubelev's first serves right now on
May thirteenth, on a Wednesday. Hey, how much of a
degenerate do you have to be to know Andre rube.
Speaker 1 (38:21):
Lev's first serve. He's a freaking nine to one underdog.
Speaker 2 (38:25):
Today his first serve percentage.
Speaker 5 (38:28):
He's a great Listen, Listen, we gotta find some to
talk about.
Speaker 2 (38:31):
The NFL season, writes itself.
Speaker 7 (38:34):
Mike Hi watches every second of every NBA game, figures
out a way to watch most of the hockey games.
It is breaking down Andre Rubelev, who you could have
told me he was a Russian scientist.
Speaker 1 (38:47):
Last night, I would have believed.
Speaker 5 (38:49):
This pig better come through centrus Andre Rubev under eighteen
and a half games final value there, it's going off
at minus one forty three. All right, Cubbies in the
Braves going to a little baseball today. I like the
over eight and a half runs. Now the Brazen playing
some damn good baseball. The Dodgers actually got to Chris
Sale on Friday. Kind of thought they were gonna take
(39:09):
advantage of that series.
Speaker 2 (39:10):
They did not.
Speaker 5 (39:11):
The Braves crush them on Saturday and Sunday. Get a
win yesterday against the Cubs. Shows at Emanaga is on
the mound. Who has had a good season for the Cubbies,
except the Braves have good long ball hitters, and that
has been when Emanaga has struggled with the most as
he is acceptable to the long ball and JR. Richie
toward the back end of the rotation for the Braves.
The Cubs are too talented to not respond today. These
(39:33):
are two of the hottest teams in all of baseball
and particularly in the NL. I think the Cubs bats
respond today, and I think the Braves hit a few
homers off Emanaga, so over eight and a half runs
in that game. Cubs, Braves. All right, we're heading the
Association Calves Pistons now. Interesting series so far. So the
Detroit wins games one and two, looking like they're gonna
(39:54):
maybe sweep the Calves. Calves go back to Cleveland and
win the next two games.
Speaker 2 (39:59):
JB.
Speaker 5 (39:59):
Bick staff after Game four made a big stink about
how the rest are changing the whistle. They're not getting
calls anymore. He's doing what JJ Reddick did. He's trying
to instill a thing as this goes back to Detroit,
that they're getting called for too many fouls. The Pistons
want to play like the Thunder and Oklahoma and in
San Antonio, where they want to beat you up physically.
(40:21):
They're gonna value They're gonna give you some fouls early,
but they know the refs can't call it all a game,
so they're gonna get away with some stuff that playing
into the ref's mind. I like the under to eleven
and a half. Donovan Mitchell has gone off in the
last two games thirty nine points in the second half,
which is a playoff record. I believe in Game four
in Detroit, Detroit needs to win this game. I'm not
(40:42):
sure I'm laying the four and a half, but under
to eleven and a half. I think this is an
all defensive battle in Detroit. They're gonna get away with
some more stuff, and I think the bigs of Jared
Allen and Evan Mobley are not gonna be able to
dominate Jalen Dura and Isaiah Stewart in Detroit.
Speaker 2 (40:56):
So I like the under to eleven and a half.
Speaker 4 (40:58):
If you miss any event, we will reap it as
soon as the next hour starts. Because I just got
breaking news Sammy Well, we have to give away Russell
Dickerson tickets right now, because I said we would do
it in.
Speaker 1 (41:07):
The first hour.
Speaker 4 (41:08):
So if you would like a pair of tickets to
go see Russell Dickerson on May twenty first at Gallagher
Square at Petco Park, you can call right now. Or
you can go to ticketmaster dot com. But if you
want him for free, call eight seven seven seven sixty
seven four seven sixty.
Speaker 1 (41:22):
Sammy is gonna pick up.
Speaker 4 (41:23):
Caller number Hey eight and you are gonna go to
the concert.
Speaker 1 (41:26):
Feel free.
Speaker 4 (41:27):
It's San Diego Sports seven sixty hour two is coming
up next live on iHeartRadio app
