Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'm Ben Fletcher, that's Sammy Long.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
I'm excited about it.
Speaker 1 (00:03):
It brings a lot of fuel together. Now live from
the East Set Studios of San Diego Sports seventy sixty,
we go in the zone with fletching Sammy.
Speaker 3 (00:13):
Yeah, let's get it going on a Wednesday. Want it's
happening everybody then Fletcher, Sammy Long, wait it till two
o'clock today, Samuel will keep the party rolling from two
to three. Schaefer and Sliwa will be your drive home
on this beautiful Wednesday in America's final city. How's everybody
doing If it's your first time trying us out. My
(00:33):
name is Ben Fletcher, that is Sammy Long. We do
this thing from noon to two every single day, talking Padres,
talking all things San Diego sports, talking NFL all year round,
and of course we will check in with the NBA postseason,
which we'll continue later on tonight.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
Before we get to anything the.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
Offensive explosion from the Padres last night that involved one
home run and a whole lot of batting around, we
are going to start.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
With eighteen points.
Speaker 3 (01:00):
Eighteen points was the point differential between the Los Angeles
Lakers and the Oklahoma City.
Speaker 1 (01:07):
Thunder last night. Sammy remind me of the spread that
we got that game.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
At sixteen and a half.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
I think we got it at seventeen and a half,
which was stings even a little bit harder. It was
a one point difference between what we needed to happen
and what actually happened.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
Sammy Long, how the hell are you read to have
a great show?
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Yeah, yeah, you know, we'll recover.
Speaker 4 (01:26):
Last night was very frustrating, very not that I thought
the Lakers were gonna win, but it was disappointing how
they actually played pretty well through two and a half
to three quarters and then it unraveled. I mean, it's
a testament's how good the Oklahoma City Thunder are. Their
bench is so much better than the Lakers. But very disappointed.
How my boy Austin Reeves played that was a bit
(01:47):
of a shocker. I thought he was gonna have a
good game.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
What was his final number? He was three for twenty three,
three for twenty six.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
And it was like three for fifteen.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
I thought it was worse than that, but I might
be inflating it in my head.
Speaker 4 (01:59):
Pulled it anyway, he didn't have a very good game. Now,
I don't know because he is coming off the injury.
He banged knees with Hartenstein early on in the first half,
and it seemed like that was kind of affecting him
throughout the night. But you know, the Lakers, I had
a really good three for sixteen oh five from three.
He had a very jj Redick, had a very good
(02:19):
game plan. Mische scored under twenty points for the first
time since May of last year, and yet the thunder
still roll him. So it just it just goes to show,
you know, the the talent disparody between Oklahoma City and
basically everyone else. But very very disappointing, disappointing loss last night.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
So if you don't know, it's twelve forty five.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
Every day we do something called Sammy's long Shots where
Sammy puts together a little parlay. The Lakers were in
it last night to cover a seventeen and a half
point spread. Our Buddy Rich on YouTube has come up
with a new hashtag, hashtag so close Sammy one less
goal and one Laker three pointer away from cashing.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
Yeah, the hockey picked it and end up working out here.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
Yeah, they gotta, they gotta.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
There was three goals within four minutes of that game starting.
By the way, we were.
Speaker 4 (02:59):
Looking good early too, but in the second quarter or
a second period there wasn't a lot. But yeah, listen
stabs and flows of gambling. I thought Dalon Kinneck was
going to back to our cover as with a late three.
But yeah, rough night for gambling, rough night for my Lakers,
rough night for a lot of stuff.
Speaker 1 (03:13):
Not a rough night for the Padres.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
And we will get a new long shots coming up
at twelve forty five. So the Padres look debuted a
new lineup last night. I think I appreciate that about
the early part of Craig Salmond's tenure as the Padres
manager is he is willing to try some different things out.
So I'm sure everyone's seen this number by this point.
It's a bummer we're getting on at noon and not
at six am. But you look at what the Padres
(03:34):
did yesterday with their lineup, and Fernando Tazzis Junior was
batting fifth in the lineup.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
Now I was curious, and.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
So I went back immediately and looked at around what
five point fifteen last night when I first saw the lineup.
At the last time, Fernando Tazis Junior had batted more
than four spots away from the top of the lineup.
Speaker 1 (03:52):
You know, when that last time.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
Was Sammy Long, it would be eighteen games into his
professional career. It would have been his rookie season, eighteen
games and he switched into the top four. He has
never been out of the top four since now. Tatzis
didn't necessarily have a great game. He hit a nice
little line drive to right field that bounced in there
for a base hit scored to run. But Fernando Toazzis
Junior being out of the top four of the lineup,
(04:13):
the traditional one, two, three and then the cleatup spot,
I thought it was pretty fascinating from Craig Stamon. I'm
pretty ballsy of Craig Stamon, if we're being honest, because
it's not often you see somebody who has a contract
worth three hundred and forty million dollars slide down the
lineup at this point, and he did it for Fernando,
and I do think I mean for Fernando, like Fernando
Tozzis Junior needs a little bit of the pressure taking
(04:34):
off of him or something, but he him in the
five spot. The most consistent hitter of the year in
Miguel Andahar in the four spot or in the three spot.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
Excuse me? Worked out great for the Padres.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
Jackson Merril big night, Xander Bogart's another home run, Miguel
Andahar three hit night, one home run away from a cycle.
The Sung one song had a really nice RBI double.
It was like the Padres offense clicked a little bit
last night. And I'm not saying it was just because
they dropped Fernando to the five spot in lineup, but
it does show you that, like Craig Stammon as a
Padres manager, not afraid to switch things around, not afraid
(05:06):
of the contracts that people are getting paid, and it
paid dividends last night.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
We will see if it does again today.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
First pitch at twelve forty five, the lineup has come
out for Nando Tatzis Junior is batting number five again.
If this is something that works for a little bit,
credit goes to Craig Stammon for this one. Put a
little green check mark next to his report card.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
Well, yeah, I think I think it's in impressive that
in his young managerial career, you're sitting there he's willing
to try stuff.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
I mean, that was the problem with Mike Shilt. Mike
Shild was so stuck.
Speaker 4 (05:33):
In his ways, then it would clearly not be working
and he would be trying to throw the best defensive
lineup out there, and we'd be sitting here, you know,
night in night out, asking where's the offense? Where's the offense?
And it's cool at Craig Stam has been able to
a have the have the guts to try all this
stuff in two knowing that a lot of coaches who
(05:56):
have been in the league for a long time, whether
it's coaches or managers or whatever, and are scared to
piss off the stars, and that's a big problem. Like
JJ Reddick had the same thing when he became the
Lakers coach because he had never been a coach before,
so that was a big concern. I think JJ Reddicks
done a good job of actually not just you know,
doing whatever the stars want. Craig Sammon, That's what I
was looking for early because Manny Machadad was praising him
(06:18):
in the offseason. Tatiz, everyone was in love with him
being the manager, you know, former teammate of a lot
of these guys, and that can be a good thing
and a bad thing because it's great that the players
love the manager, but it's also when it comes time
to to make tough lineup decisions. It can't just be
because you know, the stars want to be here. It
was good for Fernando. We've seen Mchidad take off days,
(06:39):
which is something that he wouldn't really happen with Mike
Shilt and needed to be happening. So yeah, Craig Stammon
deserves a lot of credit for kind of knowing he's
young at this, he's green at this and still still
making making trying different things out, you know, playing him
a second base like, there's a lot there that Craig
Stalmmon's done well.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
Also, the aj Peller master class continues. Miguel Andeharp the
most consistent Padres hitter by far. Even his out in
the I think it was the eighth inning last night,
was a line shot to left field. Absolutely tattooed the ball.
But he's playing incredible baseball. He's back at the three
spots today, Jackson Merril's back in leadoff. Nice little three
hit night for Jackson Farrell Merrill as he looks like
he might be coming out of this slump. Manny Machado
(07:19):
over productive outs, sure, but an over five for Manny.
He's batting second today and Tatisa is playing second, batting
fifth today.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
So the lineup shuffle continues a little bit. Now.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
Something special happened, and it always does in baseball. Maybe
it just gives me the warm and fuzzies. I don't
know if I'm the only one, but when a rookie
gets their first big hit, right, it happened with the
Giants last night. Rodriguez the catcher hit a home run
last night for the Giants. The smile that's on his
face when he touches home plate is the same as
the spell on Sung one Song's face when he reached
(07:50):
third base on a double that turned into a triple.
It's pretty special in baseball when you get those moments,
and I always love it, and so congratulations. It's a
sungmun Song getting that big double put the Padres up
in front yesterday, and I guess congratulations to Rodriguez the
Giants catcher who got his first big league home run.
All right, let's get to the big three of our
Number one, where Sammy Long rips through the top stories
in the world of sports. It was a nice one
(08:11):
for the Padres. Last night Man ten to five feels
good talking to Padres positivity on a Wednesday, Sammy Smash.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
Is here ready to go back to the office and
knock the socks off your friends, I mean co workers.
Speaker 1 (08:25):
Takes time for the top stories of the day's big
three three.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
No interestingly enough, I went to bed last night thinking
Matt Waldron would be the picture on the mound today
for the Padres.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
He is not. Gradually Rodriguez is getting the start for
the Padres. Take that for what you will, Sammy, Where
are we going with the big three?
Speaker 4 (08:43):
Waldron has not earned He's not played well so far
this year. But I would be a little nervous. You
don't want to start going to bullpen games. It's early
in May.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
I want it could be an opener situation, you know
where gradually Rodriguez and then Waldron comes in.
Speaker 1 (08:57):
But we'll see, all right.
Speaker 4 (08:59):
Big game tonight in the NBA Sixers Game two against
the Knicks, Joel Embiid will be missing Game two, so
you will not be playing tonight. Is that are the
Sixers cooked in this series?
Speaker 3 (09:11):
It kind of seems like it, right. I am a
little shocked at Joel Embiid. Now he didn't leave Game
one with any injury that we knew of. This is
it came a little out of nowhere. Now it's Joel Embiid,
so you're kind of wondering every single day if he
wakes up and there's something wrong with him.
Speaker 1 (09:25):
This is a bummer, though.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
I thought the Sixers would have some life and would
have some fun against the New York Knicks, and I
thought maybe they might be able to push them a
little bit. I look, I don't know what it's gonna
look like when whoever out of the East plays against
the Spurs or the Thunder, if that's the team in
the West, but it's probably gonna be a bit of
a blood bath. So I was hoping that the conference
finals in both these conferences would be fun. I kind
(09:46):
of think it's gonna be the Spurs, but maybe the Timberwolves.
You're right, So I don't know what it's gonna look
like once OKC gets to play against the East, but
it's probably not gonna be pretty. So I was hoping
the Eastern Conference finals would be badass. Looks like the
Sixers are gonna roll over a little bit. I thought
they might be the team to get there.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
I think on the Joel embiad front, it's disappointing because
this is a guy who could be is an all
time great talent. He's a has the size to be
a franchise center, but can hit out, you know, step
out and shoot the three.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
He's unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (10:17):
I mean, he's a multiple time MVP for a reason, but
he's missing this game due to multiple injuries. Right hips
soreness and right ankle sprain. Not a good look from
a guy who's missed a ton of time. You finally
get past Boston and this does feel like kind of
a do or die game.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
For the Sixers. I don't think they're done yet.
Speaker 4 (10:32):
Actually, I think against the Knicks and be not playing
even though you want and beat out there could actually
help them because they're able to go a little bit
more five wide, a little bit more small ball, which
can make Karl Anthony Towns go into a little bit
of no man's land and take Mitchell Robinson out of it.
For the Knicks, this is going to be the MAXI
and VJ Edge come show. You know, can can they
(10:54):
step up? Can Paul George step up? Can Kelly everybody
step up? They've played a lot of the season without
and beat. So I'm not writing the bit to wear yet,
but certainly a rough look for Joel Embiid, who has
been heavily criticized over the years for missing time.
Speaker 1 (11:06):
All Right, who next?
Speaker 2 (11:07):
All Right, let's head a golf.
Speaker 4 (11:08):
Two time Major champion Bryson and Shambo said Tuesday that
if Live Golf dissolved, he's prepared to grow his YouTube
channel and play in tournaments that want him rather than
go back to the PGA Tour. Off the jump, this
seems idiotic to me, but I guess Bryson to Shamba
is a huge star.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
He's a huge star in his own right.
Speaker 4 (11:29):
Ben, I know you're tapped into the YouTube golf world,
so he's gonna draw big headlines. But rest in peace
of Bryson to Shambo's career.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
Then I disagree.
Speaker 3 (11:38):
I actually think this is probably the smart thing for
Bryson to Shambo to do. Now.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
I would love for him to be back.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
On the PGA Tour competing each and every week, but
there is something to remember about the PGA Tour. They
don't let golfers post their own stuff, like if there's
a highlight from say Rory McElroy and a Genesis open
right where he hits out of the bunker onto the
green that goes in. Rory can't then go clip that
put it to social media. Bryson's big, a big voice
opposing the PGA Tour on this, saying, look, it's us,
(12:05):
we are the ones playing. Stefan Diggs can post a
video of his touchdown. We can't post a video of
our shot, our golf shots. It is a little weird.
And so Bryson de Shamba is saying he wants a
little more ownership over his own That's why he wents
to Live Golf in the first place. Along with the
massive check. He wants a little more ownership over what
he'd do.
Speaker 4 (12:21):
But what's more important posting your social media clips are
winning majors and events.
Speaker 3 (12:26):
Bryson's point of view is it's more important to grow
the game of golf, and he doesn't think that the
way the PGA Tour has been doing it is.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
The right way to do it.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
He can also probably make more money on YouTube. I'm
being completely honest, Like his following is massive there. He's
talked about this before Live Golf started going under, So
I appreciate the Bryson sticking to his guns. Look, the
entire world thought Bryson de Shamba was a douchebag when
he was on the PGA Tour and the PGA Tour.
Only he leaves, goes to Live Golf, starts this YouTube channel.
(12:53):
All of a sudden, he's become likable and people enjoy
his content. People were rooting for him in the US Open.
It is a different Bryson that we've gotten over the
last couple of years.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
But he was kind of the villain on the PGA Tour,
which was fun, right, and then added a heel and
then he and Rory's I'm.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
Telling you, like, Bryson is very rootable to me now,
and I if he wants to do the YouTube golf thing,
I'm gonna support him in that. And he still says
he'll come back for the majors. But I'm okay with
this personally. I mean, you do whatever he wants.
Speaker 4 (13:20):
I just think that after some point, it's like some
of these guys that like Live didn't work. You guys
struck out. You tried to make it happen, it didn't work.
Now you got paid. So if that's all you care
about them, that's great. This feels a lot like a
Ronaldo situation in Europe. Like you could go play in
the Premier League and be relevant on the national picture.
(13:40):
You go play in the Saudi League, make hundreds of
millions of dollars, which is great, it's your prerogative, but
you know, unless you go do something at the World Cup.
At some point, if Rory and Scottie and all these
and rom comes back, if he's allowed to Cameron Smith,
all these guys are winning majors, Bryce is gonna be
forgotten about it.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
At some point Bryson can still play in majors.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
He's qualified for all of him for a long time
because of his Now, I do think Bryson is also saying,
I'm not just going to bend the need of the
PGA Tour now that you want all of us back.
I'm not gonna pay the five million dollar fine. I'm
not gonna sit out for a year while you're begging
us to come back. It is like PGA Tour probably
needs to grow.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
Up a little bit.
Speaker 3 (14:13):
I think they need to take the ego out of
this a little bit and just welcome guys back. There
should be a punishment, sure, make it a slap on
the wrist. Don't make these guys sit out a year,
That's what he's saying. He's saying, why would I sit
out a year pay five million dollars while I.
Speaker 1 (14:25):
Could be doing my own thing on the side, just
to come.
Speaker 2 (14:27):
I get that.
Speaker 4 (14:28):
It's just they're kind of in the catbird seed. PG
is like, you guys struck out. Sure, you didn't work,
So either gonna come back and you're gonna play, or
you're not gonna be relevant.
Speaker 1 (14:37):
I promise you.
Speaker 3 (14:37):
This is positioning from Bryson to wave whatever year long
wait out the PGA Tour wants him to do, because
they need him back. They need John Ron back. They
need all of these guys back if they want golf
to continue. They want the PGA Tour to continue, They're
gonna have to make some concessions, and I think they should.
Speaker 4 (14:52):
You think they need him back or it would be
good for the sport. Now know PGA necessarily needs them back.
Speaker 1 (14:57):
They need him back.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
I mean John Ram has not been playing good golf
at all.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
Right, but he would be if he comes back, he'd
be right back to where he was if he commits
to it. And so that's the thing.
Speaker 3 (15:05):
They do need these guys back, and I'm curious if
Bryson is just doing a little posturing here right now,
and if he is, I'm all for it.
Speaker 4 (15:11):
Right at the end of to day, he's gonna end
up coming back. He's posturing to come back because he
knows sure he needs the PGA Tour just as much
as they need him.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
Sure.
Speaker 3 (15:18):
All right, it's San Diego Sports seven sixty Big three
number three on the other side, plus Lakers host us.
Speaker 1 (15:24):
On long shots.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
We'll get into that game a little bit coming up
next to San Diego Sports seven sixty live on myheartradio app.
My favorite song is sung one song, Instan classic. Let's
get that song going on one on one five kgb y'all.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
I'll try to put it in the lineup.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
A five eight Sammy's alt long shot hit from me
last night because of Daddy Lavaria bringing out that last
second three pointer, shake the Snake. We just got to
take those ault lines on long shots, so then we'll
get winners and another eight five eight says No, Bryson
on PGA tour is pathetic and I'd rather watch his
YouTube videos before any PGA to ur bs. Yeah, it's interesting, man,
(15:58):
I do think this is Bryce and kind of putting
the gauntlet down, saying, look, if PGA Tour wants me back,
I don't want to sit out a year, and so
he's gonna make the YouTube videos. There's another YouTube golfer
right now at Wesley Brian, Wesley Brian, I think his
name is who He was on the PGA Tour. He
was playing well and then he did something with Live
He wasn't in a live tournament, but he did like
(16:20):
a Part three contest or something with his YouTube channel.
The PGA Tour said suspension banned for him. He didn't
take any money from Live Golf. He just did something
on YouTube with Live Golf at some point and he's
still out of the league, but he's making millions.
Speaker 4 (16:34):
I mean, I credit these guys for Obviously people watch,
so if they're making a ton of money, that's great.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
It.
Speaker 4 (16:40):
As a fan of golf and like watching the tournaments
on the weekends, I want to see the best playing
the best.
Speaker 3 (16:46):
So I mean, that's just me agin just your boy.
Lebron setting up his post basketball career. He's starting to
release clips of him golfing all the time. He's getting
the microphone and the video camera set up that all
the best YouTube Golf All.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
The Lakers went out a couple weeks ago.
Speaker 1 (17:02):
Lebron's doing it on his own.
Speaker 3 (17:04):
It's like once a week we're getting the new Lebron
video out on the golf course.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
Talk. That's what it took for Van Fletcher to become
a Lebron.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
And honestly, it is making me more of a Lebron
fan by him on the t box kind of taking
you through his shot that he's gonna hit.
Speaker 1 (17:16):
Is it's pretty entertaining stuff. Man.
Speaker 3 (17:18):
So we'll see. But Bryce, and I do think is
posturing right now. We'll see if the PGA Tour bends
to him or if he has to bend to the
PGA Tour. One of those things is gonna happen, all right,
Speaking of Lebron, James, speaking of the Lakers rough night
last night, it's bizarre. Actually, like Shake gisis, Alexander did
not have a very good game for Oka see eighteen points.
Okac didn't really have that great of a basketball game.
They still won by eighteen. Is that doom for the Lakers?
(17:41):
Is this over? Because even on Okac's not best night,
they were able to win by eighteen. It's kind of
an interesting thought process to put behind because I'm with
Sammy Man, the Lakers played well for the first three
quarters of that game and then sort of let it
up a little bit. But I just think that oka
See handled business. It was never really in doubt from
my point of view. Even with oka See not playing
that well well.
Speaker 2 (18:02):
I think the series was.
Speaker 4 (18:05):
I don't want to say over before it started, but
the chances of the Lakers, everything has to go right.
Speaker 2 (18:10):
For the Lakers to win. You need bad shooting nights.
Speaker 4 (18:13):
You need guys on the Lakers, the unsung heroes, to
have big nights that okay Se didn't play all that well.
The Lakers played pretty perfect outside of Austin Reeves. Austin
Reeves the one point for the Lakers that could be
much better three to sixteen.
Speaker 2 (18:27):
He did not have a good night. He looks hurt.
Speaker 4 (18:30):
I mean, he was not aggressive whatsoever. He kept he
had a couple of nights assists early in the game,
but was not aggressive, and you could tell that okay
Se figured that out and we're just pressuring him. Once
he got across the half court line. Knew he wasn't
going to attack because so much of Austin Reeves game
is downhill, attacking, getting to the basket, and being a
great finish around the rim. So he net very good game.
(18:51):
But the Lakers came out with a great game plan,
doubling Shay. You know, they were running Lebron off double
screens that was working. Getting in the pain, got Hartenstein
and Bouch a little bit earlier in the game two
quick fouls, So I mean, I could see the Lakers
getting a game. I do think they played well for
two to three quarters. They kept you know we talked
(19:11):
about yesterday, when you're constantly playing from down eight, nine
to ten. They cut it to six couple times, cut
it to four a couple of times. The game really
broke open when the Jackson Hayes you know charge was
reversed and then Isaiah Joe hit that three, and it
just felt like all the win came out of their sales.
It does lead to a larger conversation though about Austin
Reeves because he's the one guy that has pressure in
(19:34):
the series because the Lakers don't have a lot of pressure.
No one expects anything from him, but Austin Reeves is
the guy that people question, can he be a number
two option on a championship team with Luca when he's
back for next year. And I'm not gonna, you know,
write the obituary after Game one, because I do think
Austin Reeves coming off an injury can be a lot better.
I'm an Austin Reeves fan, but certainly didn't do a
(19:56):
lot last night to quiet.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
Those doubt ors going three to sixteen.
Speaker 3 (19:59):
So he's in year three of a four year deal
and he has the player option for next year that
he's going to decline because it's time like fifteen million bucks.
Speaker 2 (20:05):
He kind of took a team friendly contract the last
time with the Lakers.
Speaker 3 (20:08):
So if Austin Reeves wants to he's an unrestricted free
agent at the end of this season, right and the
Lakers would have to pay probably a pretty significant amount
of money to bring him back. So the question I
think you're asking right now, Sammy without asking it, is
should the Lakers pay Austin Reeves this offseason?
Speaker 2 (20:23):
I want Reeves back. I think Reeves is a very
good player.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
So, in a post Lebron world, assuming Lebron's not in
the Lakers next year, which may or may not be true,
in a post Lebron World, you would be comfortable with
it being Luca and Reeves team and then supplement through trade,
supplement through the draft.
Speaker 1 (20:39):
I got to get someone else in there.
Speaker 4 (20:40):
I think if you built the team like Dallas did
with Luca and Kyrie, Daniel Gafford, Derek Lively, three bigs
that were constantly working as well as three and D
wing defenders and PJ Washington, guys like that that made
up for the deficiencies of Kyrie and Luc on defense.
Reeves with a max contract gets a little dice year.
I would still bring him back because even if it
(21:01):
doesn't work, a lot of teams would take on Austin
Reeves as a number three option, so trade in a
couple of years. I would pay Austin Reeves. Ideally it's
not a max level contract. There's been some rumors of
him taking a hometown discount because he loves being a Laker.
If that would happen, no doubt in my mind. The
max contract, you get a little worried, but I would
lean toward paying him right now, but would like to
(21:23):
see him play better the rest of the series.
Speaker 3 (21:24):
They need a lot of help around them, that's for sure,
all right, it's San Diego Sports seven to sixty. We'll
stick with the Padres on the other side, some interesting
development on who's the starting pitcher today, and then we
have this awesome Aaron Rodgers story that will tell you
all about after the Padres game gets going. It's San
Diego Sports seven to sixty or listening live on my
Heart radio.
Speaker 2 (21:40):
App Other than someone who is related to you.
Speaker 3 (21:43):
Missus Wemberg fourth grade, she hit me in the face
with a racer at one point, but I really feel
like she was a big impact.
Speaker 1 (21:50):
In my life.
Speaker 3 (21:51):
Why did she hit you with the racer? I'm sure
I deserved it, I don't know. I came home and
complained to my parents about it. And Ms Wemburg actually
lived down the street from us growing up, and so
I think my mom called her and said, Hey, do
you hit been in the face with an eraser today?
Speaker 1 (22:04):
And she said, yeah, I did.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
My mom said, good, I that's that's fantastic.
Speaker 3 (22:12):
So yeah, missus Wimberg big impact on my life. And
then when I was in high school, she paid me
to walk her dog.
Speaker 2 (22:16):
So, oh, look at that full circle moment.
Speaker 4 (22:18):
Home, I had a lot of teachers who either I
was really tight with or they hated me. There was
not a lot in between. There's not a lot of
teachers that were kind of like, Sam, he's all right.
They were either like, Oh, he's my favorite student, or
I efing hate that kid. That makes sense, get him
out of my class.
Speaker 3 (22:33):
I've heard that from our listeners too. It's like they
either love you, they adore you, or they want to
see you decapitated. But maybe somewhere in the middle.
Speaker 2 (22:39):
I got a shout out profe Musico in high school,
the first professor music, No profane musico, that's what I
called her, profe for professor sure, last name Musiko, Actually Musico.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
That's pretty cool. It is San Diego Sports seven sixty.
Speaker 3 (22:55):
If you got a teacher shout him out on the
text line, well we'll give him some love. Today on
Teacher Appreciation Week, our Buddy Rich on YouTube said, maybe
bradually is just the opener. Waldron usually shaky in the
early innings but settles in. Yeah, it does look like
that's what it's gonna be. So Kevin Acy put out
a tweet a couple hours ago now where he said, uh,
gradually Rodriguez is gonna be opening the game for the Padres.
Speaker 1 (23:15):
That's not right, Is that right?
Speaker 2 (23:17):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (23:17):
He is.
Speaker 3 (23:18):
Yeah, he's gonna be opening that he's starting the game
for the Padres today and then Matt Waldron is gonna
pitch as well. So I would assume this is a
one or two inning start for Rodriguez. Maybe Matt Waldron
comes in right after that. And look, it seems like
Matt Waldron's been pitching every day game for the Padres.
So we've gotten to watch the first couple of innings
here in studio during our show, and it hasn't gone
well in the early innings. Maybe this is the trick
(23:40):
to get him out of his head. And this is
again I'm gonna give some credit to Craig Stalmon here.
It's finding solutions to problems instead of running his head
up against the wall over and over again.
Speaker 1 (23:47):
Craig Stammon has switched around the lineup.
Speaker 3 (23:49):
Tatisa is batting fifth again today, he's playing at second.
Today was Xander Bogart's getting the day off? So look,
nothing has been steady for the Padres this year. Everything
is kind of in flux while you're trying to figure
things out. And that's just something that the previous administration
with Mike Shild didn't really do.
Speaker 4 (24:07):
And this is kind of this is a big game
today for it being what may six.
Speaker 2 (24:11):
I mean, it's it's you.
Speaker 1 (24:12):
You don't want to lose three straight series and don't
do that.
Speaker 2 (24:16):
To the Giants.
Speaker 4 (24:17):
And the Giants right now are a team that is
flailing playing anybody else but the POTTERI is right now
that three and two against Pottery. So you don't want
to lose to two series to the to the Giants.
I know they play them later this year, so there's
time to make it up.
Speaker 2 (24:29):
But I think you, I think you win today.
Speaker 4 (24:31):
I think you kind of turned the corner on the
last week and a half, ugly series against the White Sox,
ugly against the Cubs if they're starting the night, you
know the game won really well. And then that that
Mexico City series where they split against the Diamondbacks.
Speaker 2 (24:44):
You got you got a tough Cardinal team.
Speaker 4 (24:45):
This the Cardinal team over the weekend is a is
a damn good baseball team. The schedule has been picking
up a little bit, so this is this is a
big game today. And to your point about Craig Standman,
I give him a lot of credit for like take
swings on things, not even a punt like I I'd
much rather go Tati's batting fifth in the lineup.
Speaker 2 (25:02):
Okay, that didn't work well.
Speaker 4 (25:03):
At least we tried it versus Mike Schiltz year ago,
where it was I mean, the same lineup every day.
It was no change whatsoever, and they're clearly the team
wasn't working. It's one thing when you're you know, winning
World Series left and right, and you're like, we're gonna
roll with our group of guys when it's clearly not working,
and then you're almost frustrated that the questions even posed
(25:24):
about if you should switch up your lineup. I think
Craig Salmon is an excellent job so far of keeping
the players happy but also actually managing the team and
not just doing whatever they want. I give Craig Samon
pretty high marked for his first month and a half.
Speaker 3 (25:38):
I mean, so far, it'd be hard for me to
give him anything other than eight. The record's great, he's
changing things around. It looks like guys are happy. I
think Craig Salmon's doing an excellent job with this team.
We'll see that could change easily. Right now, it's a
sliding scale, right, it could move quickly in a hurry.
Speaker 1 (25:51):
Right, go ahead, and to.
Speaker 4 (25:53):
On another point to it's one thing to switch the
lineup around when things are going great. Right, it's impressive
that he did that. We're kind of you know, reaching
in the you know, in the weeds here. But the
last week and a half has not been great for
the Padres, so heading into last night, you switch up
the lineup. I'm sure Tatis wasn't thrilled that he's batting fifth.
I'm sure he wasn't like, oh great, I'm batting fifth.
(26:14):
I'm get paid the most, the most on the team.
I give him a lot of credit for changing things
when it's not going great, because when things are going great,
it's easy to tinker with things because you can point
to your record. Craig Stammon has been impressive by.
Speaker 3 (26:26):
The way he's playing second base. Did any of us
think that was gonna happen this show? No, But it's
something new, it's something different to try to get break
some things out of a funk.
Speaker 2 (26:33):
All right.
Speaker 3 (26:33):
The other the big question facing the Padres now, and
I kind of love stuff like this in the middle
of the season because I do think iron sharpens iron.
Speaker 1 (26:41):
What do you do with Jake Croninworth. If Sungmon's song.
Speaker 3 (26:44):
Is great and Yesterday down there, I mean, I'm kind
of there with you, man, Yesterday Sungmun song. He hits
the double that gets the Padres the lead. It ends
up being a triple after they kicked the ball around
a little bit. But then his very next at bad
it's kind of a dribbler down the first base line.
He beats it out, kind of forces the error at
first base with the pitcher for the Giants in the
first baseman not really no one what to do, gets
(27:06):
to second on a stolen base, and then ends up
stealing third along with second because of an overthrow, scores
another run. Like he is exciting man, and swing is fantastic.
I do think he thought he hit a home run
when he hit that double, because he kind of pimped
it a little bit.
Speaker 1 (27:20):
But if he's.
Speaker 3 (27:21):
Great and he spends the next week hitting, what are
you supposed to do with Jake Croninworth.
Speaker 4 (27:27):
Well, And I mean, look at look at the Yankees
right now. Anthony Volpi has been a long has been
a big piece of that team that went to the
World Series and lost.
Speaker 2 (27:36):
The Dodgers. Jose Caballero.
Speaker 4 (27:38):
He just got sent back down because Caballero has been fantastic.
Its horsetop for the and this is the Yankees, the
New York Yankees were every time you do something, it
is a magnitude times twenty.
Speaker 2 (27:48):
Like I get Jake Coronaworth as the name, and he's had.
Speaker 1 (27:51):
Also as the contract. That's probably the biggest issue.
Speaker 2 (27:53):
Right Well, Volti too, Volpi is contract too.
Speaker 3 (27:55):
But the Yankees having a contract with someone who's a
little different than the Padres having a contract.
Speaker 2 (27:58):
Very good point, very true. True.
Speaker 4 (28:00):
But if songs playing well, I don't understand it. I
mean Jake Cronamworth. Listen, everyone loves what he did against
the Daughters in twenty twenty two. That will forever be
a moment in Patre's history. But right now he's been
terrible this year. There's no other way to cut it.
He has been a a not even just a bad hitter.
He has been a terrible hitter, hitting like one p
thirty right now, so like an Austin Hedges type hitter.
(28:21):
So you can't have that in your lineup. Maybe he
gets right in the minors, that's that's the hope. And
he's able to come back at this thing, you know,
with the uh you know, with you coming up from
getting better in the minors. But right, I mean this
whole rigion, it goes back to the Tatis thing. It's
like this whole rigidity. Oh well he's the quote best
player on the team. He can't hit fifth, Well, no
we can't. He can't hit fifth, like just because Jake
(28:44):
Coroner's contract's bigger than songs. If songs playing better, he
should be getting the not over him. So again it's
marks for Craig Stammon for not just going with the contract,
not just going with the name, but going with who
the best nine guys are on a consistent daily basis.
Speaker 3 (28:58):
Also thing for everybody out there that was hoping to
see Fernando at shortstop at some point this year. Today
probably would have been the day to do it. With
Jake Croninworth on the I l with Xander Bogart's getting
an off day. But someone's song is gonna be playing.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
You're not going to do that on the road.
Speaker 1 (29:10):
I would like to see it though. At some point.
Speaker 3 (29:12):
Man, you talk about where he was at his best
as the padre, it was when he was playing short
He wasn't necessarily a great shortstop, but man, he was
hitting the lights out, so I would like to see it.
At some point, I thought today might be the day
where it happens. Was Xander Bogart's getting an off day,
but he's played second base, but he is betting fifth,
and I think that's big. It gives him a little protection.
By the way, Like you say Fernando shouldn't like hitting fifth, I'd.
Speaker 1 (29:33):
Argue he should. You're gonna get better pitches to hit
when you're betting fifth.
Speaker 4 (29:36):
It is funny how it's the exact opposite of the Dodgers.
The Dodgers Bookie Betts went from right field, where he's
great at to shortstop, where he's okay, and people were, well,
he's great defensively, but people were really frustrated last year
because his bat was way down.
Speaker 2 (29:51):
And now it's the opposite.
Speaker 4 (29:52):
People want in Tatis to go to short because they
think his bat's gonna get better than in the outfield.
Speaker 2 (29:57):
It's it's kind of.
Speaker 4 (29:58):
Like you would think that it would be harder to
hit it shortstop because you're dealing with so many more
things than just playing in the outfield.
Speaker 3 (30:04):
But I really feel like Fernando Tazzi Studior needs to
spend a week doing whatever Miguel and ahar is doing
right now, because every swing Miguel Andalharr puts on a ball,
he's getting lyft on it and he's hitting the crap
out of it too. Man, he's squaring everything up. I
love watching Miguel and Ahrr his approach of the player.
Right now, it looks like the baseball's about the size
of a grapefruit. Every time he hits it, he's squaring
it up. I don't know what Fernando needs to do,
(30:24):
but that's the guy you should be emulating right now.
All right, quick break long Shots. On the other side,
we got an awesome Aaron Rodgers story. It's an offseason, baby,
It's the NFL offseason, so there's gonna be Rogers drama.
We'll tell you all about that coming up at one o'clock.
But long shots next, can we make some money? San
Diego Sports seven to sixty live on iHeartRadio app. All right,
it's San Diego Sports seven sixty. Every day around this time,
we do a little something called long Shots, where Sammy
(30:47):
takes a look at the vast expanse of sports that
are happening the night of and he creates a three
Z or a four Z sometimes a twosy in terms
of a little bit of a parlay for us to
all to put in on our various apps and websites.
We can make money sometimes we do. We're in a
little bit of a could streak right now. You know
what happens when a cold streak goes on too long,
It's gonna end ends, and it ends in a fiery
(31:08):
ball of passion and love and incredible.
Speaker 1 (31:11):
Money falling from this guy. Sammy smashed that button. You
looking for some luck, want to wins? Bab He was
so minu. We don't even know what time to take
a shot. Say that to me and his money with
long shots in the world. Words of Will Ferrell. I
could feel it in my plums.
Speaker 3 (31:30):
Today is the day where we going, Sammy.
Speaker 4 (31:33):
Nothing quite like some Buffalo savers in Montreal, Canadian, But
here we go feeling a little patriotic.
Speaker 2 (31:38):
I love it all right over five and a half.
Speaker 3 (31:43):
Goal setting against Canada's never gone bad for this show.
That's a fact. That is that is a fact.
Speaker 4 (31:48):
Yeah, because we hit, we hit, We hit Team USA moneyline.
One of my favorite bets that Ben and I have
ever concocted on this show.
Speaker 1 (31:54):
Men's and women's.
Speaker 4 (31:56):
Men's and women's. We're like over five and a half now.
Buffalo Montreal are two young, fun teams that get out
and skate. They're fast, they play with a lot of
reckless abandoned Not a lot of people expected either of
them to be here, especially the Buffalo Sabers. One of
the big shocks of the National Hockey League. The over
under open at six and a half. It's been dropped
(32:17):
to five and a half because people are kind of
betting the other way.
Speaker 2 (32:20):
But I like the over five and a half here.
Speaker 4 (32:21):
A Buffalo is going to be all amped up because
this is you know, it's the one Buffalo team that
can actually win something in the postseason.
Speaker 1 (32:31):
Josh Allen going to be there because this is a
bad Ben if he is.
Speaker 4 (32:34):
If Josh Allen's there, then then I'm feeling really bad
to take the money out. But Tates Thompson one of
the stars for the Buffalo Sabers. The last time he
scored was in Game one. So despite all the goals
that they had in Game one, the or sorry Series
one against the Boston Bruins against a good goaliean swingman.
Tates Thompson wasn't really a part of them. Cole Caulfield
also has only scored one goal in the last series
(32:57):
for Montreal two really fun young teams.
Speaker 2 (32:59):
Five and a half. This is an easy number to hit.
Speaker 4 (33:01):
I like the over in this game. Get This series
started with a bang. All right, let's head of the Association.
First game of the night, Knicks sixers. Now this opens
a seven and a half point Nicks favorite. It is
seeing ten and a half, right, ten and a half,
So there's right now. I'm curious what this gets up
(33:21):
to by game time. Right now, because of the Joel
Embiid not playing in this game and has swung to
ten and a half.
Speaker 2 (33:29):
We're going with the over too. Thirteen and a half.
Speaker 4 (33:31):
Okay, I actually think the offense for Philadelphia is gonna
be much better tonight in a weird way. Even though
Joel Embid is a star and you want him out there,
he does slow down the offense. And this team did
beat Boston in Game two without Joel Embiid, and that
was because Edgecombe was a dominant offensive force. He's taken
a little bit of a back seat outside of that
(33:53):
Game seven because Joel Embiid came back and got a
lot of touches. With him not there, Edgecomb's gonna be
shooting a lot. We got MAXI is a big time
players had some big games at.
Speaker 2 (34:03):
The Garden before Kelly Ubrey, Paul George.
Speaker 4 (34:06):
Look, the Knicks have been on a heater and they're
scoring points left and right. They've had three straight games
of at least thirty plus point wins. Two it came
against the Hawks, and then that game one against Philly.
I do think that was a little bit of a
scheduled loss coming off that grueling game seven. The Knicks
were kind of sitting there in waiting on it. I
think it's a tighter game. But two thirteen and a half.
I like the over. I think the fact that they're
able to go more small ball with Philly and a
(34:28):
little bit more of a five wide out actually puts
Anthony Towns a little bit in no man's land. And
I don't think Adre Drummond is gonna be able to
guard Kral Anthony Towns on the other end, So over
to thirteen and a half, Timberwolf Spurs give me over
two seventeen and a half. I like the over tonight.
We've got a couple unders each of the last yesterday
and on Monday over two seventeen and a half in
(34:50):
this game and moved out from two sixteen and a half.
When we look back at that game one on one
on two victory from Minnesota, both teams missed some shots
down the stretch of that game, and let's look at
the box scores, like the on the Spurs side alone,
Wemby did not have a good game eleven points five
to seventeen from the field, oh of eight from three.
I do not expect that to happen again. In a
(35:11):
kind of must wing game for the Spurs back at home.
Darren Fox, who normally has had some really big postseason
performances with the Sacramento Kings, only ten points. He was
five or fourteen. Now, a lot of help coming from
a lot of guys in that lineup. Anthony Edwards, first
game back from injury, did have eighteen, but that was
off the bench, and I expect Iota sumu Is coming
(35:32):
back for this game as well, who was one of
the best scorers on Minnesota's team.
Speaker 2 (35:35):
Actual a high scoring game, I don't expect as much.
Speaker 4 (35:39):
The defensive presence down low with Wemby and Rudy Gobert,
especially with the Sumu there.
Speaker 2 (35:44):
What that's going to do is.
Speaker 4 (35:45):
Draw him out because it adds another three point shooter
to the Timberwolves.
Speaker 2 (35:49):
They were missing that in Game one.
Speaker 4 (35:50):
Obviously, because of the de Vincenzo injury, he will not
be returning forward the playoffs. So I like all over tonight.
Over five and a half goals in Buffalo. In Montreal,
I like over two thirteen and a half in that
six or Knicks game, And I like over two seventeen
and a half in the Spurs and the Timberwolves.
Speaker 2 (36:07):
I think we got some great basketball all tonight.
Speaker 3 (36:09):
Nice little THREEZ to get your day started. I like
it a lot. All Right, we're gonna roll with that
for today. See if we can come back tomorrow and
play Shaky money Maker when we come in at twelve
forty five.
Speaker 2 (36:18):
No, I've been missing I've been missing Ludacris at twelve
forty five.
Speaker 1 (36:21):
We need more Luda.
Speaker 3 (36:22):
We need to start playing like Sarah McLaughlin or something
on days where you don't win.
Speaker 1 (36:26):
Coming into the twelve forty five segment, when.
Speaker 2 (36:27):
We play it, we play stand by eminem I.
Speaker 1 (36:30):
Will remember you will you remember me.
Speaker 2 (36:37):
That's a nice little harmony right there.
Speaker 1 (36:39):
Thank you. I feel like I nailed that. Sarah. Call
me if you ever need anything.
Speaker 3 (36:42):
It's San Diego Sports seven sixty hour. Number two is
coming up next. We got a story coming out of
the NFL. Could Aaron Rodgers be finishing his career in
the NFC West. We'll tell you all about it on
the other side at San Diego Sports seventh Faing Brock, Party, Hive, Bust,
