(00:01):
You're waking up with fifth in themorning, kiss, Good morning, career
happiness with Julie Bauki. She's ourshow's career mentor. And as we I
don't want to even begin to saywrap up summer because we're far from that.
But we're deep into summer jobs rightnow. And at this point,
if somebody is trying to grow theircareer and they're wondering, is this summer

(00:22):
job? Should I be half inhalf out? Is this for me to
just make some money and have agood time, or can I turn this
into something? What is the importanceof having a summer job and growing it?
Good morning, Julie, Good morning. Having a summer job, or
any sort of summer activities, evenif it's volunteer work, you are starting
to build a reputation, you're startingto build a set of skills, and

(00:43):
you're also starting to build relationships withpeople who can be instrumental in whatever you
do next. So we sometimes minimizethe role or the value of a volunteer
activity or working at Starbucks or reallyworking as a valet, and we start
we say, eh, this isn'ta professional job, doesn't matter, But
how we get to the next stepand the next step after that, and

(01:08):
all the steps in our careers comesfrom the relationships, the reputation, and
the skills we build wherever we showup. And I love the word are
you referrable? Will the people thatyou work beside alongside, whether it's customers
or people that your report to,or your colleagues, how will they speak

(01:30):
of you after this summer is over? Will they be happy to refer you
to something different, something maybe that'sa better fit, or will they will
they have gotten of the opinion ofyou that well, yeah, you know,
I didn't get the feeling that shewas trying very hard or she showed
up late. Every day. Westart to build our reputation and then our

(01:52):
ability to leverage every time we showup somewhere. It's just so, it's
just like, how important is thesummer job to someone's life? I mean,
they as a time where you know, you work at the ice cream
store. I'm just giving loose examples. I was a lifeguard for my whole
life. I loved that summer job, and I do think it gave me
skills to use as I was goingto find career moves early in my career.

(02:13):
So there has to be a balancethough, right of enjoying your summer
job mixed with using it for futurecareer endeavors. Yeah, the first thing
you want to make sure, nomatter what you're doing is exceed expectations.
Make sure that you are referable, that your leader is happy to see you,
and you do a great job,and you're taking stuff on even if

(02:34):
you know you don't want to dothat job forever. That's the first thing.
The second is making sure that youare connecting with the people there who
are the juice, the person youreport to their colleagues or their peers,
the person who's running the whole thing, key customers. You want to be
known as that person that they'd loveto have you back again. And even

(02:54):
if it's work you hate, youcan do it for three months and so
we build a reputation and we connectwith people every day and they're forming opinions
about us, and so it's verywhether it's paid or not paid, it's
extremely important that you show up anddo a good job because that will be
a part of your reputation and howpeople speak of you moving forward. So

(03:16):
sleeping in in the summer and justkind of phoning it in at the summer
job isn't going to cut it anymore. Well, you know we need to
do a little bit of that, use a little balanced, just a little
bit. But yeah, we don'tlook at it as eh, you know,
who cares I'm working as a lifeguard. It doesn't matter. Sure it
does because people are forming opinions ofyou at all times. Julie Bouki be
