hey man. We've been telling you about the Rising Star
Scholarship competition. We had our deadline that recently passed, and
now we have a Rising Star winner and she puts
us an impressive video together and it talked about bullying

video essay that she submitted.

So what's up, mister Morris Bart. Wild.

Always a pleasure being in the studio with you, Yes,
and today is especially great because we have the winner
of the Rising Star competition. And you and I have
been doing this for years together with each other, and
this year we have a wonderful winner with a very
meaningful topic. Yes that I'm not gonna say it right now.
I'm gonna let you say it and let Katie address it.

But she is wonderful. She addressed this topic so well.
It's absolutely a pleasure to be here in the studio
with you and with Katie. Why don't you tell us
what it's about.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
So just before we do that, I wanted to thank
you for continuing to be a community partner because I
think it's important there. Sometimes people are kind of fly
by night, fly by night in support, but you have
been steadfast and consistent, and you know that's very important,
especially days and times like this when the cause for

a higher education is through the roof.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
You've remained present and I think that's important.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
Well, thank you. I mean, look, I'm from New Orleans.
I love New Orleans. A lot of people don't know.
I'm a product of the Orleans Parish Public school system.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
And where'd you go?
Speaker 3 (01:58):
You gotta know where I went. I went to Foresha Okay,
a lot of people know Foreshae. A lot don't because
it was Foreshae and then it became lusher and now
it's will up right right. But very proud of the
education I got there, very happy and blessed of being
a position where I've been successful in New Orleans and
now I can get back to the city I love there.

And she did such an amazing video.

We used to do like the written essays, which I
always thought were really good, but I think in today's
days and times, you get a little more creativity and
they can drive home the point a little bit more.
And Katie definitely did. She did a little acting in
the video, she had her power point together. Uh so,
I'm really super impressed by what you did. The question

was social media can connect people, but it can also
lead to cyber bullying and mental health struggles for teens.
So how do you think young people should handle online
negativity and what responsibility do teens have and creating a
positive digital culture? And she hit this on all points
and knocked it out the park. So congratulations to your Katie.

You So where are you in school?

I go to Thomas Jefson Academy.

Right now, and you're a senior.

Yes, I actually graduate this Saturday.

I'm also nervous though, but I'd say more excited.

what is your major going to be.

I'm going to major public health pre med and I'm
thinking of getting a minor in Latin American studies.

is some of the bills that you have coming up?
Because you mentioned one earlier and I thought it was
so apropos that this scholarship met some of your needs.
Speaker 5 (04:04):
Yes, well, actually, fun fact, I was so grateful. Thank
first of all, thank you both for even having me here.
But it's been very tough when it comes to higher education.
I know you already mentioned how expensive it can be,
but for my family it's especially challenging because I come
from an immigrant background. I actually have two jobs and
I pay rent. So I always wanted to go to Tulane,
(04:27):
and I was going to go to your know, because
they gave me almost a full ride. But I was like, well,
tu Lane's always been my dream. But when I saw
that price, I was like.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
Ooh, it's the dream work.
Speaker 5 (04:39):
I don't know, but you know, my mom and I
we fought hard, and we were back and forth with
financial aid, and luckily we got it down to around
twenty five hundred US semester boom, And when I saw
the scholarship, I was like, okay, I just came from
work and I tried the best I could with the video.
I did the intro like two days prior, but I
(04:59):
did it on night it was due. I was like,
I'm gonna try my best. It's if it's God willing,
I'll get it. And then when I got it, oh,
I broke down in tears. You can ask miss Skipper.
I was like, oh my goodness, what a blessing because
that's what my first semester would be.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
So off man, I love it right there. Yeah, uh
so tell me about your answer.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
We talked about this amazing feeling.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
Had you ever been bullied before, whether it be in
a person or cyberwise.
Speaker 5 (05:28):
Yeah, so I was bullied as a kid growing up.
I've always been like more a manly girl. Okay, like, well,
obviously my a girly girl.
Speaker 4 (05:40):
Well, I mean I'm.
Speaker 5 (05:42):
Very like ethnically, like I would say I have features
like I was very hairy growing up, and you know,
i'd be called like Chewbacca, be called wolf, but I
would get my lik back. I'd be like, okay, you're
a naked cat terrible look backs, but you know, it
did take a toll on me. So when I first
saw the the prompt, I was like, this is interesting,
(06:02):
and it really calls to me because it's gone to
a point with our civilization as we're like, you know,
we're evolving where everything's online, you know, but you know,
the bullying is now carrying online, so it's still going on.
So it's something important we should keep talking about.
Speaker 4 (06:17):
I think.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
All right, and you had some wonderful points, and I
think that's important because sometimes people don't realize how sharp
that knife can be and how cutting it could be
online for people to read some of these comments and
it just sometimes just so horrible me and more spot
we're talking about it earlier sometimes how we have to
refrain from commenting, you know, because I want to read
(06:38):
them to riot act on some of the foolishness they
put up there sometimes. But I'm glad that you had
an approach that you thought was good. So tell me
and like maybe two or three points of what you
said as a way to handle that cyber bullying.
Speaker 5 (06:52):
Well, I think the biggest two points I mentioned, and
the first one was like joining community group chats where
you can like, instead of focusing on all the negative,
you can try to uplift each other because we have so.
Speaker 4 (07:03):
Much negativity online.
Speaker 5 (07:05):
But if we can like join together, I know, there's
like group chats, you can find things that you guys
have in common, like, you know, just community spaces that
is more positive instead of fueling all that angle all
the part right, but another one that we can all do,
like on a day to day basis. I know, I'll
scroll on TikTok, Instagram, whatever it may be, and you
can see a very mean comment. But like what if we,
(07:26):
you know, have a little silver lining and just come
back to it with a positive you know, noe. So
instead of seeing it negative and just looking at it
because I know I see them like these people are mean,
you can leave a nice comment that way. You know,
at least if you have a lot of negativity, there's
at least that positive side and you know you contributed
to that, so that's nice.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
M was that third point or just the second one?
Speaker 5 (07:50):
Well, the third point that I touched upon a lot
was to not be a silent bystander, because that's like
the biggest thing. It doesn't matter if you report it,
if you leave a nice comment if you like.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
Oh, report it, you said report it. Yeah on the.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
Video, that too, reporting it.
Speaker 5 (08:03):
But the biggest thing I would say is like being
a silent bystanding like just oh that's normal. But I
feel like as humans, hopefully we're not like this should
be normalized, Like it should not be normalized.

So reporting it not just being silent, you.

Know, and in the state of the country right now
and really the world, like, if you're silent, you're almost complicit.
And I think that's a great way for you to
in your statement and in your thought. Congratulations, a very
open minded way to approach this topic.

We're trying to get you on the news too, so
that's coming to We're gonna work that out. People need
to see everything that you did and maybe follow suits.

You have such a compelling story. I mean, you're such
a wonderful young woman to work two jobs, to have
this dream, to pursue your dream. As we all know

and learn in life, dreams don't come easy. It's the perseverance.
I mean, everyone can have a dream, but those that
succeed have the perseverance to see it through and keep
through the ups and downs to follow through on their dream.
You have done that. I have no doubt that you
will succeed. I'm very proud of you. I'm very proud

of your story. I'm very proud of your response to
cyber bullying. It's very meaningful. I hope a lot of
your listeners take that the hart wild Wayne, and so
