Speaker 1 (00:00):
Who's starting to show, who's starting to show?
Speaker 2 (00:03):
So obviously they didn't go ideally, But how much of
a culmination was this whole tournament run for these two
and just kind of your program, what you guys have
been working for for years?
Speaker 1 (00:18):
Yeah, I mean it's been a long time in progress,
you know, and to be honest, especially you know with
these two here, who have played one hundred plus varsity
basketball games, all of us that have been in this business,
you know that what your goal is. I mean every season,
every season, every team has one goal. You want to
finish it in the state tournament. For three years we've
(00:43):
felt like, gosh, we're on the cusps of this, but
just haven't been able to knock that door down. And
you know, for them to go out this way getting there,
I mean thirty one years ago the last time, and
I think it says a lot about them, a lot
about the kids following them as far as these guys
(01:03):
being leaders. And again I told them in there, I'm like,
this is something no one can take away from you.
You mean, you just sketched your name and your your
team's name into the plaques and those are those are forever.
So I'm just extremely happy for these guys. And you know,
I told them too, as like, as a coach, there's
a couple of you guys in here that's coach before.
As a coach, your your goal was also to get
(01:23):
to the state tournament. I was fortunate enough as a
player and as a player, I felt like that it
was the situation was in control. I had control of it.
As a coach, it's a it's a different situation. You've
got to rely on the kids out there. I relied
on these two kids to get I told him, a
fifty two year old man a dream. I mean, I
(01:45):
relied on these two and they did it for me. So,
like I said, it couldn't be more proud of them,
happy for our program. Obviously, today's tough, and I told
him it's going to sting for a while, but it's
nothing you hold your heads about.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
You.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
I mean, you'd be proud, You be happy with what
you've accomplished.
Speaker 4 (01:59):
Before Pally, you went off. If the heart summed up
to your crowd standing ovation, well deserved. But I mean,
how cool was that moment for you? And what's going
through your head at that moment?
Speaker 5 (02:10):
Uh, it's something special. I always keep that in my heart.
It was definitely tough coming off the court for the
last time, but I'm really proud of my teammates, So.
Speaker 4 (02:19):
Maggie, just today, I mean, they were just staying at length,
at height. I really felt like in the first half,
you guys made a little run to get back into
the game, you know, going into halftime. I know they
pushed it back further, but I mean kind of kind
of talk about having that difficulty with their height and
their length, and you know, the rebounds just weren't there today,
and there was no not an effort thing.
Speaker 5 (02:39):
It was just that they were just.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Bit I mean, I think that you're in like on
this big stage and you see we have the big
crowd and it's just like nobody's used to this court
or anything, and they were just the team that were
hitting their shots. I mean, we had a lot of
shots up, they just weren't really falling.
Speaker 5 (02:53):
It's just one of the.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
Things where you know, we were ready to play, we
had a run, we saw the chance, but I mean
it's the final four. You know you're always gonna face
that one team, and it's just I think we played
really well for what we had and I would have
taken this run over any of the past few years
I've had, So I was really proud of how we
played today.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
Still my life.
Speaker 5 (03:11):
You can just kind of sum up your four year career,
I mean what occurred it's been.
Speaker 4 (03:16):
I mean, I'm sure you've had felt pressure to go
out perform every game.
Speaker 5 (03:20):
Just if you just kind of sum.
Speaker 1 (03:21):
Up the top wave appeal to do it, just say
for a fifth year by the way.
Speaker 5 (03:26):
I mean, it's been a great four years here.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
I wouldn't want to.
Speaker 5 (03:29):
Do it with any other group, especially Maggie. I've been
playing with her since like fifth grade a ball, and
I'm just really proud of us forgetting this far. I
mean every year we've came short and it's like, like,
I mean, you can't be mad about it, cause it's
our dream to come to the final four. So I
mean we did what we could do.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
How probably are you of yourself though?
Speaker 5 (03:45):
For the work that you put in?
Speaker 4 (03:46):
And like I said, I'm every time you step on the.
Speaker 5 (03:49):
Four, people expect big things from you. For you to
be able to go out and do that, Yeah, I
just kind of keep putting in more work. I'm I mean,
I'm proud of myself for getting to where I'm at
right now, but I'm just not done yet.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
So magg I think Third ChIL Coffee was here. And
then you look on the other side. Nothing against taking
Saint Mary, but you guys are definitely loud. How cool
is that for your community? What's this ride then? Like
you know, this past week here just with your community
and sharing that moment with them.
Speaker 5 (04:15):
I mean, it was amazing.
Speaker 3 (04:16):
It's like one of those things where I mean, Wheneber
I'm at work because she's like every single person's asking
me like are you excited for the game? I'm even
scouting for the game. What can you tell me about
the game? And I'm like, guys, we just won the
last game, Like give me one second to breathe, Like
I just and they're like, I mean I had this
guy come up to me and he literally pulled up
a game a Saint Mary trying to scout with me
while I was working of a rush. And I was like, yeah,
(04:37):
I mean, I guess we'll give them what we got.
But it's just me. I mean, you're just walking through
the hallways to talk about and everybody's like, I'm so excited.
We don't have school Thursday and went to the game.
Like I didn't hear one person say that they weren't
going to the game, but they cookers the game, and
I mean they showed it. Everybody was there, and I
think it's just fortunate enough, Like we've out crowded every
single team that we've played so far, and I mean
(04:57):
it's just an amazing feeling to have all of that support,
and even if we're down by how much we were,
they're still chanting for so showing that they care about us.
And I mean, I'm this is just something great for
girls basketball here and you had it too, So Jeff,
if you.
Speaker 4 (05:10):
Want to piggyback out, I mean, you know, everybody in
the district. I mean, the girls are one thing, but
the coach, they're telling you, coach, you can do this,
you can scout this. How cool has it been for
you to kind of rekindle that, like you said, State tournament.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
No, it's been. It's been super super special. You know,
It's it's one of those things, like I told you earlier,
I seen it as a player. You know, I've been
coming to the state tournament for forty five years. I
think since I've been seven years old. It's only been
two times I never bought tickets. Nineteen ninety one, twenty
twenty six are the only times I never bought tickets.
(05:44):
So if that tells you how special it is to me,
really special to me, specialty to our school. And like
Maggie said, I mean, you look up in the crowd
and and honestly, they're they're not here just to watch
a basketball game. They're here to support their kids. I mean,
because like we said, we've kind of have that family community,
(06:06):
you know, I see you know, you see little girls today.
Actually I just told Miley there's a couple of little
girls had the coolest shirt on I've ever seen. It
was like a picture of Miley and number twenty five
and someone got it and I'm like, I got to
have one of those, you know. I mean, like I've
got to have that shirt. But yeah, it's super cool,
like just for everybody, everybody, And it's one of those
things that you know as a coach too, man, you
(06:27):
love it because what's that do that makes it the
younger generation hungry? You know, I don't know how much
longer I can do this, but but you know, when
you little kids out there, I guarantee you today back
in chilkot They hearing about two hours, there's gonna see
the little kids out on their parking lot driveway shooting that.
I'm gonna shoot the Miley Smith shot. I mean, I'm
Maggie you. I mean so So it's just just huge
(06:49):
for for our school district, our community and everybody involved
and girls.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Just how awesome was to get Charlotte back today.
Speaker 5 (06:58):
I think it was great to have here, I mean,
just to support us. Seeing what she went through the
past couple of weeks, you just feel bad for her.
You feel for her, and just seeing her here today
really just helped our team made us happy.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
But she came in expecting to play a whole bunch
of minutes.
Speaker 5 (07:12):
I'm like, you just got out.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
Of your hospital and yes, check and so it was
I really like seeing her just going into the game
for at least the last minute. I mean, I don't
think she was feeling very strong or anything, but that's
strong enough to be able to get in front of
the crowd, not knowing how you're going to react to
being on the court and just at least trying to
get a shot up. I mean, it's just great for
her to still be able to I mean she got
us as far. She had some great things for this team,
(07:36):
and she gave us the confidence we needed. So she's
still one the reason why we are here today. So
those really great just being able to see her to
get those couple of seconds on the court.
Speaker 4 (07:46):
Jeff, I know it's hard. My last question for you,
I know it's hard for these two sitting next to you,
but you do look at the program, the all too
early question you mentioned the experience now you have to
hear how do you what do you know expect going
forward now as a pro and telling your younger girls, hey,
this is the this is the standard now.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
Yes, right, yeah, I don't you know, it's one of
those things. I don't think you're you're never going to
replace these two, right, I mean they just they don't exist.
I mean they I can walk the halls for twenty
five hours straight. I'm not gonna find these two in
the hallways. But you know what you've got to do is,
like you said, you've established something and you know you
(08:25):
gotta We've got kids coming back. Like I told I
told some of the kids in the locker room, you
know we had we're in a starting lineup today with
two kids who also started about twenty JV games. You think, uh,
you think their growth over this course of the tournament
run was enormous, you know. So again, you know, we
(08:48):
we'll go into seasons in the future, and you know,
going into next year, we're going to expect to win,
win games. I mean, we're going to expect to be
back where we're at right now. And like I said,
I think this run that these guys you know, kind
of led us through is going to be huge for
some of those younger kids. So again, like you just
you establish what's culture, you establish what the standard is,
(09:11):
and then you know, I think the kids will will
rise up to it.
