Well, pleasant, good evening to you. Welcome to VA Memorials
Stadium for high school baseball. We've got some regular season
action for you as the Unigoda Sherman's take on the
Margaretta Polar Bears from up in northern Ohio. Jacob wise
with you along with Lou Postage, the aforementioned Lou postage
and Lou Boyd. What a beautiful day we have today
for some baseball.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
I'll tell you what. Yesterday is April Fool's Day. We
are not fooled here today. What a wonderful day for baseball.
You never know what you're gonna get here early in
the baseball season, but perfect weather here for a four
to thirty start on a Thursday.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Now, of course, the VA here home of the Chillicothee Paints.
They are busy, busy, busy in the spring. They started
last Saturday with the high school games with the high
school season opening up last week, and then they basically
played two games a day here all throughout the spring
and then have more on Saturdays and other programming on
Sundays and things like that until they get into the

summer and then it's Legion ball time and all that.
But we don't normally get to do this this time
of year, Lou. It's a little different for us getting
some regular season baseball in. But again, iHeartRadio here in
southern Ohio Chillicothe. Trying to be more and more part
of the community and be seen and be upbringing events
like this to you.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
Yeah, and again a great complex, as you said, to
be able to do this, we're able to, you know,
do some games from here and it's just a wonderful complex,
easy setup for us, and you you very familiar with
these setups here at the VIA.

Speaker 4 (01:45):
But yeah, this is just what we want to do.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
We want to get as many games as we can
out there for people who can't make it out and
love to hear it on the radio, Lou.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
For me, this is as comfortable as sitting on my
living room couch. Unyodo buy coin. Flip will be visiting
team in today's game, so they will bat first wearing
their black jersey tops. They do have white pants on
today and Margaretta with their green tops with black trim
and gray pants, green caps with the M on the front.
Starting pitcher Jackson Shearan will go up against Jackson Zikafus,

who leads off for Unioda. And the first pitch is
in for a strike, and we are underway, just a
couple of minutes early at four twenty seven, so just
underway here from VA Memorial Stadium. It's a windy one
second pitch on the way, swung on skide into medium
deep center field, Zach Gray underneath. It puts that one

away and Zikafus retired for the first out. Quick look
at the Uniodo lineup here, it's against zickafusitt short. Jack
Welch will come up to bat. He's the center fielder.
Cayden Speakmanal bat third and right field for the Shermans.
The pitcher Blake Sanders bats fourth. First baseman Carter Elliott
bats fifth, David Long about sixth the third base the

d H Grady Goebel bats seventh, betting eighth catcher Landon
Davis in the second baseman. Brandon white Well bat ninth
for Unioto. In the first pitch here in that Jack
Welch is a ball also for the Shermans. Blake Smith
will play left field, but he is being dh for
so we'll only see him when the Shermans are in

the field. This pitch in for a strike on the
inside corner even stings up at a ball and a
strike to Jack Welch here with nobody on one out,
just underway here on the top of the.

First interesting here Welch and Zickafu's there in the leadoff
batter both played football, basketball, now baseball. I don't think
they've had a week off since a beginning of what August.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
Those are the days you look back on once you're
done doing it all. And how much fun was that
pitch outside here makes it three and one to Jack Welch,
who just picked up a pretty good reward from his
work on the hardwood.

Yeah, he's a great athlete.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
Three to one, driven straight into center field, back up
the center fielder. Great drops for a base hit, and
that is your first base runner of the ball game,
as Jack Welch picks up a one out single and
the Shermans have a runner on here with one down
for Caden's speakman the right fielder.

Yeah, and again you talk about the football and basketball
season four. UNI had a very good uh you know
god ball in both actually, and you know went pretty
good in the postseason. So these guys are you would
think tired, but you know they're young guys so.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Well in this baseball program. Made a long run last spring,
all the way to a state semi final. Got to
the final four pitch outside here to start it to
Caden's Speakman, who's won for four at the plate to
start his spring. Just the third game of the year
for the Shermans. They started one and one, had a

rough defensive day in the opener last week. One O
pitch misses down low and Lou you know it's you
get this Ohio and starting in March. Sometimes that first
game is the first time you see a ball.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
Outside exactly, and you know the field conditions are not
the greatest either. Now here it's perfect conditions, but you
get on some of these high schools it's tough.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
Two oh pitch outside runner going to second and sliding
in safely with the steel is Jack Welch and now
a runner into scoring position for the Shermans. Here in
the top of the first so on RBI spot here
for Kidd and Speakman, who does have one so far
on the year.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
Yeah, great jump by Jack Welch getting to second and
see if they can't get him over and in.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Three to zero pitch coming from the right hander Jackson
Schern and it is outside ball four, so speak when
I'll go down to first base on the walk runners
at first and second, one out for Blake Sanders. Set
the defense for you here quickly for the Polar Bears
and the outfield left the right Brin Smith, Zach Gray

Heck at first base. Memphis McKenzie does the catching for
Jackson scharn and his first offering here down lowell ball

And one of the great things about high school baseball,
you often see the pitcher batting in the lineup takes

one low and away here in a good job by
the catcher McKenzie to slide to his right and keep
the runners where they are.

And high school baseball, a lot of them are probably
the best athletes on the team, so you're gonna see
them playing multiple positions as well as hitting.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
Two balls no strikes to Blake Sanders with two on
and one out. A pitch and therefore a called strike
on the outside edge. All turf surface here at VA
Memorial Stadium, this old ballpark built on the VA Hospital
property back in nineteen fifty four, got a brand new
turf surface last summer. To one pitch swung on chop

towards third, one bounce in near the bag. Leben Good
steps on third and I'll get the lead runner. And
that is all not real hard hit ball. So Sanders
aboard at first on the fielder's choice, Speakman goes to
second and welch out at third. Five on assisted for
out number two. So on two down for Carter Elliott.

yesterday as well, played a storm shortened game and a

Well happen inning in the book here on a gorgeous
stay in Chillcoffee. Sherman's got a hit and a walk
in the top half for the first but unable to
move anyone past second base. And now Margaretta will come
to the plate for the first time here in this
one is Blake Sanders walks out to the pitching mound
to make his second start of the year. He started
the opener back on March twenty eighth for the Shermans,

pitched well, went five innings, gave up three hits in
those five innings three runs. They were all unearned, kind
of victimized by those six errors from the Shermans and
the opener that strike out three batters and walked one
in his first outing of the year. So his second
start coming here the right hander for Uniota. Their defense
looks like this. In the outfield left to right Blake Smith,

who is a position player only in this one to start,
Jack Welch in center field, Canden Speakman and right, David
Long at third base. Jackson Zikafus is the shortstop, Bradon
White at second base, Carter Elliott at first, Landon Davis
does the catching for Blake Sanders, and I'll face this Margaretta.

after they won their opening game of the season.

Yeah, you get a nice little trip down here to Chilicothy.
I'm assuming this is their spring break with and they're
able to make a trip down here, stay overnight, and
you know it's not like you're going south. But tell
you what, the eighty degree weathers you're feels good.

Speaker 2 (10:18):
Coach was saying that he heard some of the guys
saying it was too warm the other day. They had
a practice here the other day to get ready on
the trip, and I thought that was kind of funny.
They were working out here on the turf in shorts,
and of course with the sunshine and the artificial surface,
it's a bit warmer out there on the field even
than it is with the air temperature. So Zach Gray
will step in, left handed batter. First pitch from Blake

Sanders is in and low for ball one.

I mean, you talk about this surface, You got the
two tone gray, the different stripes.

Speaker 4 (10:47):
I mean, it just looks pleasing to the eye.

Got the paint's logo there behind home blate one O.
Pitch is inside. That was a big effort. This ballpark
actually was the first in the United States to put
in a one hundred all you know field turf type
with the rubber infield surface on a baseball field. This
pitch runs in here three and zero and then it

stayed there until last season when it was finally replaced.
And you know, you're talking hundreds of games played on
it per season. Three to zero. Pitch is inside. In a
lead off walk here to Zach Gray and the Polar
Bears have a base runner here to start it as
Brin Smith, the left fielder will step in. Don't score
here a bottom of the first runner at first, nobody out,

and several state representatives and county commissioners and a whole
host of folks kind of pitched in to make sure
that that turf was able to be replaced. Here really
a community asset, I mean, it's used by the schools
in the area, and they don't have to pay to
play here more than the team that lives here. In
the paints pit cheer up and away runner going to

second late throw down is high, good shot by Zika
Fu's coming over to snag that one up above the bag,
but into second with the steal is Zach Gray and
an early runner into scoring position here for the Polar Bears.

Yeah, that was almost a you know, last second steal.
He took off and the catcher sort of was caught
mesmerized by that.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
Butt here up to third base line, the pitcher Sanders,
picks it up and he throws it away past first base.
Around third Gray will score as the ball goes out
of play, and Smith will go to second base on
the ball out of play, and it's one nothing Polar
Bears here in the bottom of the first I'd imagine
that that would be a base hit error combo. So

I don't think we have a real official scorer here.
I'm gonna give him a bun single and then the
throwing error moves him to second base and scores the run.

Speaker 3 (13:01):
Yeah, and you had talked about in your first game.
I think they had six errors in that first game,
and you know those are tough to overcome. And here
you get one in the first inning.

Speaker 2 (13:10):
Pitch outside here to hunter grawl the DH batting right
handed runner at second. Still nobody out, and they do
put up on the board hit and error. So I
don't know if John's listening.

Speaker 4 (13:23):
To you must be that's a cloud you got around here.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
There's the one to zero in forest track. I saw
something online the other day that said, you know, try
explaining this to someone who's never watched baseball before. And
it's talking about major league pitchers making so much money
to throw a baseball, but if they have to foot
a little bit differently than they're used to. How many
times you see a pitcher pick up a bunch and
chuck it in the right field. Yep, you know. It's

one of those weird baseball things. Is the pitch runs
low here two and one.

Speaker 3 (13:52):
And really the bun has sort of become obsolete. Not
too many people can do it, and I don't even
think very many teams practiced it that much.

Speaker 2 (14:00):
It could be a big weapon if you can do it.
Here's the two to one now from Blake Sanders that
picked back the second fires. This one popped up out
behind home plate. Davis with the mask off back to
the infield, and he's able to make the grab right
on top of the paint's logo behind home plate. So
Crawl retired on the pop up to the catcher and

one out. More importantly, it keeps Brent Smith at second
base now with one down for the cleanup hitter, Memphis
McKenzie doing the catching this afternoon for Margaretta.

Tell you what those are? Two good pitches.

Those last two pitches from Sanders really good pitches, and
spotted them in the right spots.

One nothing, Polar bears here in the bottom of the
first to run on a hit in an error and

There is no catcher or hitter challenge in high school.

Oh, one popped up on the infield again, out towards
second base, drifting out to right. It's a heavy wind
in from right. Speakman makes the grab and shallow right field,
so the runner at second Smith will stay put, So
Mackenzie fly out to right for out number two, a
runner at second, two down for Mason Kromer, the right

fielder who digs in for the first time left handed bat.
I like the challenge system. They did it where it
happens quickly. It doesn't make the game, it doesn't drag
the game out. And you only get so many of
them as long as you of course, as long as
you keep getting them right. You keep getting them which
shouldn't get punished for you. Someone making a bad call

(15:44):
first pitch here and for a strike, and the Reds
experienced that the other day. I think they know what
six or five or six overturned.

Yeah, I love the back to back by swore as
he got it, and uh boy, I'll tell you you
have to as an umpire, you gotta be thinking one.

Of my one groundball to first base over toward the
line behind the back left by Elliott'll step on the
back two in the inning, so leadoff walking, an error
leads to a run for Margaretta. They lead at one

Yeah, I mean again, hats off to the Chili Coothy
Paints for allowing this to take place. I mean, just
an ideal situation for us to broadcast from and the
amount of games that they play here and you know again,
I can't emphasize enough. People in this area don't realize
the facility here and what it allows our young kids
in high school to be able to play. I know

(17:36):
there's softball games that are going to be played here
as well, and you know, it's very fortunate. I was
able to watch my sons play here, and you know,
when they were younger, we brought them to Paints games
and just a fantastic place to watch a baseball game
and a fantastic organization, the Chillicothe Paints.

Speaker 2 (17:55):
I mentioned this ballpark built fifty four it's technically owned
by the federal government. The Paints lease it and really
control everything that happens here. But I played here in
high school in the last year it was grass and
they at that point you started playing so many games
you had the bear spots out of the outfield and
they went with the all turf, and that's just that's

(18:16):
been a huge boost for high schools and other colleges
come down here and play as well. David Long leads
off for UNI Yodo down one nothing here in the
top of the second inning. First pitch down low from Jackson.

Shearen David Long, another three sport athlete there for Unioto.

Third basement today one for his first four at the plate,
check swing ran in and got him on the hand,
and they say it got the knob, So a foul

if you're not familiar, if you're listening from out of
town and you just stumbled upon us, I mean, you
could almost hit a baseball to their baseball field from

closest school to this ballpark, just right down the road.

To one pitch upstairs, three balls strike to the leadoff
man David Long here in the top of the second inning,
tanks down one nothing to the Margaretta Polar Bears from
about three hours north. Three to one ground ball hit
hard back through the middle to his left, a sliding
stop by the short stop. Look Horse gets up and

throws the first bit, scoots away from the first basement.
All I'm gonna try it for a second throw down
to second and out by a long way as Long
try to slide head first into second base. Great hustle
by the catcher, Memphis Mackenzie booking it up the first
base line backed up the throw and able to throw
out long with his hand in the cookie jar for

Yeah, tried to stretch out with a nice bounce off
the fence there back to the first baseman.

He was a able to catch it quickly and throw
it a second.

So one out here for a Grady Goebel, the DH
one for four to start the spring takes the first
pitch for a strike.

Speaker 4 (20:12):
I think I gave him a hit on that one.

Yeah, I hit and then two to six put out
out at second base breaking ball and missus low and
away here one on one, So that's the second hit
of the game for the Shermans. One one misses inside,

I don't think they gave you were talking about a
base hit there for Yeah Smith in the first inning.
They did not give him a base hit on that.
They just give him an air.

Straight up air two one upstairs and another three to
one pitch there's a strike up and on the outside edge.
Had a full count here to Grady Gobel. Nobody on

one out top of the second inning here and a
one nothing Margaretta lead over uniodo three to two pitch
is up and away ball four, So Gobel will head

Hey, what, they've had a lot of runners on base here,
just haven't got one across the plate yet.

Speaker 2 (21:35):
I had a runner to second base with one out
in the first inning and just had a hard time
moving him beyond that spot. So a runner at first
one out here in the check swing and the whole
by umpire says he went around pitch outside their strike
one to landon Davis, the catcher two for three at
the plate to start the year. He's only a sophomore

and a home run, drove in five in the last
game the Shermans two for three, hit a bomb, score twice,
drove in five and a twelve five win over Western
Brown on Tuesday. Oh one line the right center field,
that'll get down and roll all the way to the
wall around second BASI is Goebel. He will turn and

head home on his way to third is Davis, and
he will go in standing up with an RBI triple,
picks up his sixth RBI of the year, and the
Shermans tie this game at one all with one out
here in the top of the second.

What a great hit there.

He just went with the pitch there and took it
in the right center field. And you know, the outfielders
not playing real deep, so with their shallowness, that thing
got started rolling. And that's a long way to run
out there for those outfielders.

Speaker 2 (22:48):
And you love to cash in on the walk. Now
the infield's going to come in here for Margaretta with
a runner at third and one out. Now, the first
pitch high here to the ninth hole. Brandon White, second
baseman today for uniodo. I'm gonna pick up his second
RBI of the year. One oh line. The second a

diving grab made by Berg. He gets up and throws
back to third and did he hang on to it? No,
I've been good. Unable to find the handle on that
short hop. Nearly doubled off over there at third. Unlucky there,
Braden White hit it right on the screws for out
number two.

Speaker 3 (23:28):
Yeah, that was a nice catch there by Berg at
second base. That ball get out to him in a hurry,
but he was able to move his glove and get it.

Speaker 2 (23:37):
It's about the only way you can hit a ball
hard and get out with the infield in. It's got
to go right at him, and that one did so.
Two down, down a runner at third, back to the
top of the order to Jackson Zickafouse. Bouncer back through
the middle. It'll get into center field for a base hit.
Had a two out RBI knock for Jackson. Zickafouse gives
to Sherman's their first lead of the day at two

Yeah, he saw that first Pitchy liked it, and he
took it straight back up the middle.

Speaker 2 (24:04):
First RBI of the year for Jackson. Zickafuse picks up
his first hit of the season.

I would uh venture to say we're gonna see mister
Zikafous on the run here, probably one of the quickest
players in the area.

Good lead, gets a big secondary, but stays over there
at first basis the first pitch here outside to Jack Welch.
Had the first hit of the game, a one out
single back in the first inning. Now batting here with
the runner at first and two down in the top
of the second, two to one, Yuni, yodo, there goes Zickafuse.

You wonder you know is the green light on from
Tony Taylor over there at third base?

Well, I tell you what, there is a huge gap
in right center field here, and I think if he
gets one he could get there.

He's gonna go.

High strike called here makes it three and one. The
center fielder shading Welch to pull toward left center and
the right fielder pretty much playing straight up. So you
talked about a huge gap over there. We are going
to third pitches low throw to third as high attack
brought down, popped out of the glove and it was
ball four. So also down to first base goes Welch

as Zikafou steals his second base of the inn and
the Shermans with runners on the corners and two down.

I let her teach me to play the gale now,
so we sit down and we play together, and it's
it's a amazing to me how she that's how she learned,
going on and watching all those you like you watching
for hours and she'll come back and just play songs,
and I love it, and so I'm letting her teach
me cools and stuff like that.
