Hello and welcome to Logan High School for tonight's girls
tournament action between Sheridan and Yunioto. I'm Chris Postage, joined
alongside by my father tonight coach, Lou Postage. Coach.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
It's good to be here.

Speaker 4 (00:40):
It sure is a you know, it's kind of iffy
this morning with the winter coming back after a nice
little restiment last week. A lot of these schools didn't
have school today because of that, Logan did not have school,
but we had.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
No problem getting here.

Speaker 4 (00:55):
And you know, we are in districts for the girls
tournament right now. And this is where you start to
heat up a little bit. You get two good teams
coming in tonight at a district semi finals, and these
two teams have played a lot here in the last
few years, and these two teams are really good.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
We look at Sheridan, they were twenty and four on
the season twelve and three in Muskingham Valley Conference play,
and their head coach is DJ Walters, Yes, JD Walters, sorry,
j Walters, And JD has done a great job with
this girl's program over at Sheridan, and he has won

or this program has won ten straight league titles. You know,
you look at what Unioto has been able to do
and it's not comparison to what Sheridan has done. He's
taking his teams to some final fours as well, played
for a state.

And these teams coming from Sheridan, I can guarantee you
one thing, they are going to be funded upmental. So
he had a great high school basketball coach, by the way.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
And for you and Yoda, the number one see in
the district twenty one and two overall a perfect fourteen
and o season in the Siota Valley Conference. They are
coached by Siota Valley Coach of the Year Jeff Miller.

Speaker 4 (02:19):
Yeah, Jeff's done a great job here at u Niyodo
and this program has been in this position for the
last few years. And you know, I'll tell you what.
Miley Smith is a senior here. Maggie Holbert's a senior
these two girls really want to go far here this year.
They have not got to that final four yet, and

that's something I think both of them really won as seniors.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
Look at these two teams. They actually met in the
district semis last year. Un Yoda was victorious fifty to
forty two. Miley Smith led all scorers in that game
with twenty two points in twelve rebounds. Yeah, two years
ago they played right to the buzzer and Miley had
a tipping to win that game. So these teams have,

as I said, played in this spot it seems like
the last few years and always have been really good
games and I'm looking forward to this one here tonight.
We look at Shardan offensively forty eight point nine points
per game and defensively only giving up twenty eight point
four for Their last game was on Thursday. It was

a win against Athens thirty five thirty one. Their first
tournament game was a win against Chilliganthy's sixty nine to fourteen.

Speaker 4 (03:36):
Yeah, they hang their hat on their defense. And when
you can hold high school teams to under thirty points
a game as an average, that's pretty good. And I
know in talking to coach Jeff Miller from Unioto. He said,
you know the thing about this thing the Sheridan team
that really worries me is defense. He says, they pride
themselves on defense. And he said, coach Walters would love

to walk out of here with the thirty five thirty
one victory. So you know, there's nothing wrong with that.
Thirty five thirty one, you win the game, you walk
out of here.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
I would love that every time for un Yoda sixty
one point five points offensively, defensively only giving up thirty
six point nine. Their only tournament game so far was
on Thursday. It was a win fifty five thirty four
over Marietta Smith with twenty seven Beard with ten.

Speaker 4 (04:27):
Yeah, and just like Sheridan, you and Yodo, they also
like to play some defense. Their defense is more of
a pressure defense. They like to make their offense happen
from their defense. And that's what they really got to
get going here tonight. They got to try to get
some of that transition buckets to get this game more
of an uppaced game that they like rather than Sheridan.

Now you talk about their offense, I believe you said
how many points a game?

Speaker 3 (04:53):
Fifty one and a half.

Speaker 4 (04:54):
So I mean, you talk about sixty one and a
half points a game if you're Sheridan, if you were
going to try to keep this game in the thirties.
That's a lot to ask of this Sheridan team because
of the Uni Yodo's offense. But it'll be interesting to
see how these matchups happened.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
The winner of this game advances to the district final
on Saturday, they will play the winner of Try Valley
and Steubenville. That game still doesn't have a location yet,
but your best guess would be Zanesville.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
Yeah, I would think Zanesville.

Speaker 4 (05:25):
This is going to be hosted by the East District
because this district is combined East and Southeast together in
this division Division three, and since Zanesville is no longer
in the tournament they were the number two seed they
got knocked off by Try Valley.

Since they are no longer.

In it, I think that would be the ideal place
to host because you're looking at either a Try Valley
or Stutinville team and either Unioda and Sheridan and Zanesville
is probably the best option. Other games in our area
going on, we've got Boys Action Westball taking on Megs
and Logan elm is taking on McLain. The winner of

that Logan el McLain game will take on the Unioda
boys team. That game will be Sunday at the Convo.
Sunday at the Convo at five thirty. We're going to
be there Sunday. We'll have two games down there. We'll
have the circle ball game at two and then the
Unioto game at five thirty. And you know, this is
just the beginning of a lot of games here in
the next two weeks for us, hopefully as we get

some of these teams going further and further in the district.
But tonight it's girls basketball and hopefully we can get
Unioto through to the district finals. We'll take a quick

starters first for the visiting Sheridan Generals number four. Ivy
Daily a freshman number five, Miley four Grave a senior,
Sidney Schanks a sophomore number twenty one, Megan Turns a
junior and number twenty one Laney Miller, the senior coach

four graves. She averages twelve points per game, and she
was a player.

Of the year in the Muskingham Valley. Yes she was.

And she's known more for defense and offense. It would
be interesting to see who she matches up where with tonight.

But yeah, this is a very young team.

He's going to see some freshman and sophomore is coming
off the bench for this Sheridan team.

And you know a team.

That got young after they had some, you know, quite
a few seniors last year. But another team that's won
twenty games for Sheridan. Again for you and Yoda.

Number one, Maggie Holbert, a five to six senior, Number
two Kylie Puckett, a five to three sophomore, Number three,
Charlotte Dennis a five to eleven sophomore, Number four Kiara Beard,
a five to six sophomore, and number twenty one Miley Smith,
a five to ten senior.

Yeah, two seniors there in the starting lineup and three sophomores.
And again you talk about Juniota, they're also awfully young.

They got four sophomorees.

They have a freshman to come in and play, but
their focus is the two seniors, Miley Smith and Maggie Holbert.
They really want to try to extend this season as
long as they can.

Welcome back to Logan High School District. Action just amount
get underway inside the Jim Myers Gymnasium as they announced
the starters for both squads. Coach Miley Smith, we talked
about the player of the year, the Dayton commit. Back
on February twelve, she scored her two thousandth career point.

Speaker 4 (13:12):
Yeah, that's a very impressive stat You talk about a
girls played four years and she was able to get
now two thousand point. You look over here to look
in high school gymnasium and you pointed out to me
Katie Smith back in the days, she had two thousand
and seven hundred and forty And Katie Smith was a
heck of a player. And we also know that Miley

Smith's a heck of a player and now a wonderful accomplishment.

Unota will be without their fifth starter, Senior Honorable Mention
All SBC Aiden Danison is out with an injury, So
Kylie Puckett's going to step up, the young five.

Yeah, and again it's one of those things, you know,
I guess it's a nagging injury that she tweaked the
other day, So not going to be able to go
to But you know, U Nioto's got next up mentality
there with Kylie Punkin and they just continue to move on.

We look at the other starters for Unioda. Maggie Colbert,
she was a second team All SPC Charlotte the NNIS
Honorable mention, and Kiera Beard, the sophomore was the other
first team All SBC honoree with Smith.

Speaker 4 (14:24):
Yeah, and again well deserved, and she's probably going to
be the next thousand points scorer in Unioto history once
she gets up there. But kier Beard is a very
good player only as a sophomore. And Maggie Holbert man
she's had a nice career here at UNIODA. Beard, averaging

fifteen point three points per game, led the league in
three pointers made with fifty four and that was probably
by a lar's margin. I think it was seventeen or
so over the next closest, which was her teammate Miley Smith. Yeah.
I tell you, when you have Miley Smith on your team,
you're gonna find yourself open a little bit as other
teams are gonna help out. And I think tonight Unioda

one of their big key is to be patient offensively
and half quality possession. Because that Sheridan is such a
good defensive team, you can't get our ants. You've got
to make sure you're doing quality stuff each time down
the floor, and we'll see how that goes.

Yeah, and you know, you knew it led right from
the start here tonight and never let up. And you know,
looking at some numbers, twenty nine and forty five, shooting
sixty five percent, ten of twelve or ten of eighteen
from beyond the art, so ten three pointers here tonight,

I think the beginning of the game kind of just
set the tone for the entire game. You know, and
then you know, obviously when you get down in their situation,
then they got to start scrambling, losing, you know, I

And I thought your team, you know, your five starters
all had three pointers tonight. And I thought Charlotte Dennis
really gave you a nice game, her inside out game
and she recognizes when she's open, and she goes to
the bucket when she's open, and those girls find her.

Yeah, And we've talked to Charlotte about that, and that's
just you know, that's a youth thing. Like last year,
Charlotte sometimes will get caught standing and watching and we're like, listen,
you've got really good guards out there on your team.

Defender's gonna have to help a lot. As soon as
your defender turns her head, cuts to the basket and
as a matter of catch it, lay it in.

I also thought Jillian Matthew did a good job for you,
and unfortunately hopefully she's okay. I know she tweeked her
ankle or something there. Just it is a road ankle,

I thought she's physical, and that was the one thing.

You know, typically we're not really post oriented team either,
but we really felt like tonight maybe we could be
successful in the post because they really don't have much
of a post present.

When you look at your team, you're two, you know,
of your five starters, you have two seniors, Maggie and Miley.
Both those girls they want to extend this season. You know,
they've been here, they've gone through the trials. They want
to get to the next level. And you could see that,
I think in their games right now.

Yeah, you're right.

I mean, you know, you're talking about two kids that
have been in the regionals, the district finals in their
three years. You know, they just want to take another step,
you mean, and then you could almost just see it
in their eyes and in their face. They're not you know,
I don't want to say, they're just locked in right
now and you can kind of see it.

So that's a good thing for us. Yeah, nice balance scoring. Also,
I had Miley with twenty four and then I believe
Beard with fourteen, Dennis with thirteen, and Hobert with ten,
so as solid scoring.
