Welcome to the Nutters Center on the campus of Wright
State University in Dayton. A big one for you here
this afternoon is the Union of Sherman's travel here to
Dayton to take on the Saint Vincent Saint Mary Fighting
Irish in a Girls Division three state semi final. Along
with Chris and Lou Postage, I'm Jacob Wise, glad to
have you with us. Sidney Newsom back in studio here,

and man, this is quite an atmosphere here. We got
to watch a great game before this one, and the
winner of that game we'll get the winner of this one.

Speaker 4 (00:54):
I'll tell you what.

Speaker 5 (00:55):
Soon as we walked into this arena, you could tell
it's something and there was a game going on and
the crowd was into it. And that's what you want
to see, that type of atmosphere. And I'm glad the
state decided to move these semi final games back to this.

Speaker 4 (01:11):
Area so they can all be together here and it.

Speaker 5 (01:14):
Makes something, you know, it's really special for the players
and the coaches.

Speaker 4 (01:19):
Chris, what do you think?

Speaker 6 (01:20):
Yeah, And I think the Union Unit of Faithful has
traveled well. I mean they've been busy.

Speaker 4 (01:24):
This last month.

Speaker 6 (01:24):
Or boys played last night over at High University. We
had that game that they fell in the regional semi finals.

Speaker 2 (01:31):
They had a day where.

Speaker 6 (01:32):
They had they both played in the same day and
they had to travel from a high Dominican over to
Ohio University. So it's good to see the Union Ouita
Faithful in full force here today.

Speaker 3 (01:43):
I was walking around the concourse a little bit earlier,
early in that earlier game, and there was a lot
of purple up in the concourse, hanging out, taking in
the sites. And of course they canceled school and brought
a bus of students here as well, and certainly more
than that bus has shown up. There was a lot
of purple as we look at cross the floor here
at the Nutter Center, and some nervous energy here in

the building. I'm sure for the Uniota Sherman's It's been
talked about it a lot but it's worth talking about again,
first time in thirty one years into the state tournament
and girls basketball. It was nineteen ninety five and the
opponent was the same. The only thing different the people
in the uniforms and where they're playing the game. That
one was at Saint John Arena in Columbus. This one
here in Dayton at Wright State's Nutter Center. But the

opponent on the other side, I think some of the
ladies who played on that team back in ninety five
would like to get a little bit of revenge today.

Speaker 5 (02:31):
Yeah, I'll tell you what, it's amazing how how long
you know that was? You know, I sit back and think,
you know, that's back in my coaching days and things
like that.

Speaker 4 (02:40):
I'm just like, wow, it's been that long. But yeah,
it's fun.

Speaker 5 (02:44):
And you know, I've seen where some of the girls
have chimed in from that team for encouragement on.

Speaker 4 (02:50):
This team, and that's that's what makes it special.

Speaker 5 (02:52):
You know, it doesn't happen every year, and for UNIODO,
it's been a while, but it's great to get back here.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
Was a big one for Saint Vincent Saint Mary. They
won the state title that year. That was their last
trip to the final and their fourth state title so
far in their program history. But they were also here
in twenty fourteen and twenty nineteen, so making a trip
here in twenty twenty six Sherman so coming in on
twelve straight wins, an emphatic win back on Saturday at

Ohio Dominican in the regional final, beating Hartley sixty six
forty four. We had a breath where we thought, oh no,
and Miley Smith goes down with what looked like a
devastating knee injury. She comes back in all she doesn't
score the next twelve points in the game and end
up with her second high total of points scored in

a game in her career and for Yunioto girls basketball
with forty two. And they took care of business against
Hartley and now they get to turn the page. And
we heard coach Miller after the game on Saturday, Hey,
now that we're here, you know we're not just happy
to be here. We're trying to win this thing and
get to the state championship.

Speaker 6 (03:59):
That's right.

Speaker 5 (04:00):
This type of year or this time of year, anything
can happen. And you know, Miley Smith a special player.
I mean there's no doubt about it. And as she goes,
so goes this team. And boy, what a show she
put on last Saturday, Chris. We've seen that all year long. Yeah,
you and Yoda twenty five and two on the year,
and you got to give it to coach Jeff Miller
and ad Mattcolms. They really tested themselves this year. You

look at their two losses.

Speaker 6 (04:23):
They avenged that one in Hartley and their last loss
was the Harvest Prep they lost sixty to twenty three.
That could be a demoralizing loss to some teams, but
like you said, twelve straight since that point, and they've really.

Speaker 4 (04:35):
Built off those tough scheduled games this year.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
It's always been you know, that was about preparation earlier
in the year, and now coach Miller with a program
that's made some fairly deep runs the last few years
and some really good teams that they've been able to
put on the floor over the last few years and
really during the four years that Miley's been here. But
they've continued to try to beef up that schedule, the

non SVC schedule. You know, they almost walk into a
season here the last few years expecting the SBC title.
Were expecting to win that and the gold ball is
more of the goal, not just winning it, but going
unfeeded in the sec which they were able to do
this year at fourteen and zero in conference play. But
it's let's try to get a step farther than we were.
They didn't get to the regional final last year, they

were able to get there. This year they win the
regional final, and now they're able to get to this
final four trip and be rewarded.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
As coach Miller was saying, this is the payoff.

Speaker 3 (05:26):
This is the paycheck on the work that started years
ago when a lot of these athletes were playing elementary
school ball, middle school ball.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
And working their way up through.

Speaker 5 (05:35):
Yeah, and again for two special seniors you talk about
Maggie Hobert and for Miley Smith, they never got to
this point.

Speaker 4 (05:45):
They wanted to get to this point.

Speaker 5 (05:46):
And you could tell last Saturday the excitement they had
after that game that hey, now we get to go there.

Speaker 4 (05:52):
Now it's hey, let's just relax and let's do our thame.

Speaker 2 (05:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
And I thought one of the most fun parts of
those regional games, both the semi final and the final,
was just the emotion that everyone in purple and Gold
played with in both of those games. I mean you
could see it every time out after every made basket,
bodies on the floor going after loose balls. There was
no ounce of effort from anyone on the bench, including

the coaching staff and the students section left to be
had at the end of those games.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
And they're going to need that effort again here today.

Speaker 4 (06:24):
Yeah, they are.

Speaker 5 (06:25):
And Chris, you know, you and I have done some
district final games here, Leily and stuff. It is all
about that, you know, hey, we don't want to lose,
we want to continue. And the effort that has been
put out there has been tremendous.

Speaker 6 (06:38):
Yeah, And I think back to that Stubenville game over
at Zanesville. That was probably one of the most physical
basketball games I had ever seen, and un Yoda was
right there stepping up to a tough Steubenville team. And
I think the big girl off the bench, Jillian Matthey,
she has been huge so far for un Yoda in
their runs of the tournament.

Yeaw.

Speaker 3 (06:59):
Matthew had a season nine nine points in the semi
final against Central Catholic back on Thursday a week ago,
and coaches said that she's done a great job stepping
in with the absence of Charlotte Dennis, who is here today.

She is in uniform.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
We don't know if she'll play, we don't know how
long she'll play if she does play, but it has
to be a huge morale boost just to get her.

Back on the bench.

Yeah, and you know, again, you could see the excitement
I saw her when she walked in and went up
to the girls. I mean, that's just an exciting thing
that she gets to join them, and you know, we're
glad she's getting better.

That's the most important thing.

But you know, just to get her in maybe for
a few minutes or a second or whatever, is going
to bring up boos for this team.

We're just getting started here from the Nutters Center on
the campus of Wright State University in Dayton. It's a
Division three girls state semi final winner with a date
in Dayton at Udi Arena coming up tomorrow in the
afternoon in the state championship game and the Uniodax. Suremans,

For this Division three Girls State semi final, Unida Sherman's
coming in at twenty five and two taking on the
twenty one and five Saint Vincent Saint Mary Fighting, Irish.
Two teams with coaches who have been at this for
a while. Jeff Miller in its fifteenth season with Uniyoto
two sixty six and ninety five, the Southeast District Coach

of the Year, SBC Coach of the Year, and on
the other side, Carly Whitney, who's in her thirteenth season
two hundred wins, ninety seven losses. She's also a District
Coach of the Year coming into this game here and
this is her second trip as a coach to.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
The state tournament.

Speaker 3 (10:58):
You look at these teams, it's gonna be elite guard
play Lou and Chris. You've got Miley on one end.
Maggie Holbert is an outstanding guard ast well, I think
she gets more pub if Miley's not as good as
she is.

Speaker 2 (11:09):
She runs the point quite a bit.

Speaker 3 (11:11):
On the other side, you have Malania Cornut, who I think,
like Miley Smith, maybe a little bit snubb or at
least they should feel snubbed from the Miss Basketball finalist list.

Speaker 5 (11:20):
Yeah there, I mean, without a doubt, Miley Smith not
being on that list is wow.

Speaker 4 (11:25):
I mean, I just can't see how that happens.

Speaker 5 (11:27):
But that being said, tonight's game, as you or today's game,
as you said, it's going to be really guard or
with the scoring. The thing that I think is going
to be extremely important is that inside play, some putbacks,
the rebounding. You know which team is going to be
able to control that. I think that's a team that's

going to come out with a win here today.

Speaker 6 (11:50):
Yeah you said her being snubbed off that in this
Ohio list, I think some of the Unioda faithfuls saying
well thank you, because that just lit an ex fire
under her. And that's a scary thing. With the way
she's been playing. You talked about forty two points the
other night to send them to this point.

Speaker 3 (12:08):
Now, Melania corneut twenty two point one per game for
Saint Vincent and Saint Mary and sophomore coming in. She's
feisty on the defense event as well, three and a
half steels per game. This a team in the fighting
Irish will get after you on the defense event. I
think Unioda is gonna have to keep an eye out
for that to make sure they kind of mind their
p's and q's in the back court. And when they're
bringing the ball up the floor and that size advantage

a little bit inside. Well, we'll see how that works
out and how the Shermans try to attack that. Of course,
a couple of players with some good size down low,
the headliners Sidney Ferguson for Saint Vincent Saint Mary at
six foot four, sophomore averaging fifteen points per game. She's
the second leading scorer on this Irish team. And they've
also got a six to one junior Ford and Taylor
Rogers Williams averages about five points a game, had six

in the regional final on Saturday. So who's going to
match up against whom in terms of those bigs and
how can Unioda try to keep the ball away from them.

Speaker 4 (13:03):
Yeah, that'll be interesting to see.

Speaker 5 (13:04):
We You know, we saw Hartley coming in last Saturday
with a lot of firepower offensively, and I thought Uniodo
did a great job of containing them.

Speaker 4 (13:13):
They mostly went with zone. So I'm thinking maybe we're.

Speaker 5 (13:16):
Gonna see a lot of that out of Unioda here
this afternoon, especially down low. And you talked about Rogers Williams.
She's got some strength to her down low too. She
may not be as tall as some of the other ones,
but you can see out there she's got some strength
to her.

Speaker 3 (13:30):
Now, you know, as well as you know anybody that
watches enough basketball, the size on the sheet doesn't always
match how big you play. You can certainly play bigger
or smaller than the number of your height on the
rosters sheet. So we'll see how that all shakes out.
Of course, one of the tallest players for Uniodo is
Smiley Smith, a guard, and she can mix it up
down low as well, I think rightfully. So she gets

a lot of pub for what she can do on
the offensive end of the floor, but she gets after
it on the defensive end.

She's had double doubles.

Speaker 3 (13:59):
In her last two games, shipped fourteen rebounds to go
along with her forty two points in the last game
of the regional final. But she can She can get
in some lanes and some passing lanes and cost some
havoc as well.

Jesus got does instincts you can't teach as a coach.
She just knows where that ball is going to end up,
and she does a great job of getting there.

We are told that we are going to have a
national anthem here they had one earlier and now they're
starting to walk the mic out for some students from
Saint Mary's Memorial School. So the national anthem coming up
here from the Nutters Center and then the first tip

Back here at the Nutters Center at Wright State University
in Dayton for the girls basketball Division three state semi final.
The winner goes to the state championship game. I will
play Shamandak Julienne, who defeated Copley sixty two fifty seven
with a nine to zero run over the last minute
and a half of that game. And now the unioited
Sherman's will try to punch their ticket to the state

(17:22):
championship game for the third time in school history. Starting
lineups being introduced here on the floor at the Nutters Center.
The unionoted Sherman's will wear their white jerseys today Unigo
too across the chest in purple with the yellow outline,
purple numbers front and back, little purple trim around the
edges of the jerseys and down the sides. For Saint
Vincent Saint Mary, they go with blacktops and bottoms, white

stripes down the side. Irish rather SVSM in gold across
the chest, green numbers front and back with a gold outline.

Happy that we are down here at courtside to be
able to see those numbers, because that could be a
little tricky.

And that dark green on the black. We're told those
will be illegal here very soon by the NFHS, trying
to make sure they have enough contrast on those jerseys.
But we should be just fine seeing those numbers here
this afternoon. Starting lineup for the Uniota Sherman's and head
coach Jeff Miller in his fifteenth season to sixty six
and ninety five in his career and making his first

trip as a coach here to the state final four.
He said he did get to experience it as a
player and it is very exciting for his players now
to experience. And he also said I thought interesting said
it's just as much fun as a coach as it
was as a player to go through these kinds of things.

Oh, without a doubt.

As a coach, I mean, you just live for wanting
to be here, and that's that's all the joy you
could have. And you know, I never got here as
a head coach, but you know, just just playing in
March as something special.

They're going to introduce Saint Vincent St. Mary's lineup first.
It'll be Milania korn Uthy very goods junior guard for
the Fighting Irish, averaging twenty two point one points per game,
along with Cassidy Gral, a five to six junior guard
averaging about four points per game, Sidney Ferguson, the six
foot four sophomore guard wing it will come in averaging

fifteen points per game, as well as Taylor Rogers Williams
is six to one junior forward averaging five point two
and Tatum Smith, a five to ten senior guard averaging
eight point nine points per game. Again, for the Fighting Irish,
it's Malania Cornew, Cassidy Gral, Sidney Ferguson, Taylor Rodgers Williams,
and Tatum Smith. For the Shermans, it'll be a Jillian Matthew,

five to tens sophomore and forward who's played well in
this tournament, along with Kylie Puckett, five foot three sophomore
guard out of season high back on January twenty fourth
of nine points, Gara Beard, the three point threat sophomore
guard averaging fourteen and a half points per game, and
Miley Smith, the five to ten senior headed to Dayton

to play college basketball next year, coming in at twenty
five points per game, the fifth all time, the leading
scorer in the history of SVC girls basketball and boys
or girls by a long way now and continuing to
add to it the all time leading scorer in the
history of Uniyodo basketball.

Heay talking about Miley Smith going to Dayton. She would
love nothing more than to play her last game in
the high school career there tomorrow in the state finals.

Speaker 3 (20:32):
So both teams last minute conversations with their teammates. It'll
be the six to four sophomore Sydney Ferguson at center
circle for Saint Vincent Saint Mary, and it'll be Miley
Smith for the Shermans. Referee steps in, puts the ball
in the air and the Irish will in the opening tip.
They will start first, moving right to left or underway

in this Division three Girls State semi final from the

The zone trying to work down load of rodgers.

Williams almost lost the handle, able to get it back
out now head of the key, throw into the right wing,
dumps down low on the right. It's the six to
four guard Ferguson who lays it in low on the
right and the Irish take a two to nothing lead.

Speaker 5 (21:12):
Yeah, really good job of passing to a ball around,
not being anxious and get it to who they wanted
to inside.

Speaker 3 (21:19):
Maggie Holbert handles for the Shermans off at the top
of the three point line, trying to head off the beard,
but good denying defense being played there by the Irish.

Now the right wing.

Pucket troubles it back out now head of the key.
Between the rings. Filey Smith gets her first touch left
wing extended, works a way up toward the basket. She'll
pull up for a long three too strong there rebound
tap dan pulled in by Ferguson for the Irish. Nothing
so far, Saint Vincent Saint Mary.

All right wing, loped down load of Rogers Williams working
inside of her defender Mathy able to put it in
and it's for nothing, Saint Vincent Saint Mary.

Yeah, two possessions, winning both times.

Miley Smith handling right wing for the Shermans, steps back,
throws left point now Hulbert holds it over her head.
Now puts it on the floor at the right hand,
working ahead of the key against Cornute gives it to Pucket,
who dribbles back into the right point. That stops there.
Hands off Miley Smith, who will back it out in
your center court. Six and a half to play first quarter.
Miley Smith with it right point, gets a screen from Beard.

Now backs it back out. Switch off. Now Smith guarding
her right wing, dribbling with the right hand, cross over
to the left of the free throw line, stops not
about shooting, pulls it down, gets it back pucket left
wing driving left of the lane, spins around, brings it
back out one hand pass backhead of the key. Hulbert
will call a new play here for the Shermans, down
two nothing. About two minutes into this game, right wing

now Beard back to pocket three ball right point short
off the front of the rim, rebound to the Irish
Cassidy grawl hauls it in cornut. It had to grawl
right wing, looking to go inside back to cornute. Take
the three drives left of the lane, steps through the defenders,
lay up missus low on the right, and matter the
rebound for the Shermans.

That looked like an extra step there, but I'm not sure.

I wasn't gonna say it. Bucket left wing for the
Shermans down four to nothing, five and a half left
to play. First quarterball knock loose, Miley Smith pulls it
in just before the half court line. She'll walk it
up to the left wing three point line, pulls up,
fires the three and that one short off the front
of the rim. Cornut the rebound for Saint Vincent Saint Mary.

She throws it ahead in the left wing, Grouse stops
for three, throws into the corner. Three ball from first
knocks it down from.

The corner, shooting to start this game for the Irish
and Unyodo. Three possession, three miss threes.

Passed ahead of the key, tapped and take it away
by Cornut the other way and she lays it in
low on the right for her first two and the
Shermans need an early time out. Five all one left
to play in the first Saint Vincent Saint Mary with
