Hello, and welcome to the Windlam Memorial Gymnasium here at
Zanesville High School. We got district final action in Division
three of the girls tournament Junior to High school and
Steubenville High School. I'm Chris Postage, joined alongside by my father,
coach Lou post It's coach.

It's good to be here, it is This is a
Jim rich In tradition. It's been made over, I guess,
but this is not unfamiliar to the people in Chillicot.
We've had Chillicoth the high school play here. Uniodo has
played here as well. So this is a great time
of the year. Chris, wonderful drive over here with the sunshine,

and now we get district final basketball and we've got
a good one here today.

You couldn't get a more neutral site between these two teams.
An hour and thirty one minutes to Stubenville High School
in an hour and thirty three.

Minutes to you and Yoda. When we look at Steubenville, they.

Speaker 3 (01:27):
Come in with twenty three and one record, a fifteen
and one record out of the Ohio Valley Conference. They're
head coached by Andalita Forte. Yeah, they're a really good
team here.

Speaker 4 (01:40):
They have an outstanding player much like Miley Smith who's
going to you know, shoulder a lot of the scoring
in it's as she goes Soco, the Stupenville Big Red.
But twenty three wins, I believe that's a school record
for wins and girls basketball. So this team is a
special team and they want to keep this special run

going for.

You, Yoda. Twenty two and two overall, a perfect gold
ball season, fourteen to zero in Cioto Valley Conference play
head coach Jeff Miller the conference.

Coach of the year.

Yeah, and U Nyoda has really been tested. They challenge
themselves this here at the nice schedule. So a couple
of those losses where to really quality teams. One team
they may see in the regionals that they will be
going to if they're able to get by Stupentville. Here
today is Bishop Hartley, So.

Again a very veteran team, although.

You look at a couple of softboars that'll be playing
a lot for you.

N Yoda.

You know, two really big seniors that make this team go.
These teams are very similar when we look at the numbers.
First for Stupinville offensively twenty sixty two point five points
per game, defensively giving up thirty six points per game.

Their two tournament games so.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
Far, last Wednesday, they beat Try Valley fifty five fifty one.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Leading score for them was mcshawn in that.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Game, and then their first tournament game Saturday against Dover
was a forty nine to thirty one victory.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
Again mcshawn their leading score. Yeah, mcshan man.

Speaker 4 (03:18):
Yeah, we'll try to get these games right. But mcshan
is a really good player. She signed a Clarion in
Pennsylvania to play at the next level and she averages
over twenty points a game, and she really has a
lot of talent some of the things I've been watching.
She can really take it to the home. She can
shoot it a little bit from the outside, but she

can make some plays in the open court.

And that's what this studio team, much like Uniodo is
going to try to get from off our defense to
offense quickly and make things happen for Union to offensively
sixty one point eight points per game, defensively giving up
thirty seven point three. In their tournament game so far,
it was a win against Marietta fifty five thirty four,

Miley Smith with twenty seven points in that game. And
then on Monday it was a win sixty eight to
forty six over Sheridan Smith with twenty four in that game.

the thirteen Yeah, And.

You know Smith's been around for a while now. It's
their senior year and she and Maggie Holbert both have
been around quite a while and they don't want this
rundown and they want to keep this going.

upped her game a little bit. And it'll be fun
to watch this matchup between these two really good players

Look at some starters for this afternoon's contest. First for Steubenville,
number one, Brendan Bauer as a freshman, Number two, Lucy
Sawcock a sophomore, number eleven, Phoenix Fleming, a sophomore number twenty,
Nyla mick Shan a senior, number twenty four, Bailey Bell,

a senior. I have a good job on those names.

There got him that again.

Prior of the best shooter is a Bell. She has
over fifty three pointers to her credit. But again, as
I said, this team goes as Nyla Mashan goes, and
a lot of other nice role players. I think the
point guard Brendan Bauers is a nice player. She's only
a freshman they only have, you know, two real big

seniors for this team. The rest are sophomorees and freshman.
So much like Uniyoto, this student bo team somewhat young,
but very experienced.

And for Union number one Maggie Holbert a five to
six senior, Number two Kylie Puckett, a five to three sophomore,
Number three, Charlotte Dennis a five to eleven sophomore. Number
eleven I'm sorry, Number four Kiera Beard, a five to
six sophomore, and number twenty five Miley Smith, the five

ten senior.

Yeah, we did get confirmation that Aiden Dannison is going
to be able to play here today.

She was out of the game.

The last time we saw them, but she's going to
be coming off the bench for this Uniodo team, as
well as Gillian Matthey, who was hurt in the Sheridan game,
but she is good to go for today as well.
So those five starters and those two are going to
be the main people you're going to see. And as
I said, Maggie Holbert and Mightley Smith really get this

team going. Although we did see Charlotte Dennis hit a
big three early in that game to get them started again.

Sheridan, so nice role players for Unioto, but again the
big two Maggie Hobert and Miley Smith. And we talked
about the leading scores for each team. But I want
to talk about Steubenville. They've got a big girl inside,
Phoenix Fleming.

She's gonna offer some good size for them. It'll see.

It'll be interesting to see how Unioda matches up with them.
You would imagine Dennis is going to start on her.
But we saw some good minutes out of Jillian Matthew
against Steubenville. I think that'll be a big plus for
theave inside as well. Yeah, it is.

And you know, we really haven't seen Uniota play anybody
with some nice strength inside, so that'll be a key
to watch your today.

Back to Zanesville High School as we get set for
the district final matchup between Yunyodo and a Steubenville coach.
When we look at both of these teams here averaging
about sixty points per game, only giving up about thirty
we could have a shootout or defensive battle, but either way,
excited for this one.

Speaker 4 (12:53):
Yeah, you know, And again this is a district finals,
so a lot of times come in district finals, teams
come in little timid. We'll see if that is the
case here. They also need to understand how the referees
are gonna call the game. That's gonna be some big
keys because sometimes these are referees you haven't really seen
or are aware of. So a lot of things early

in this game are going to be sort of a
feeling out process.

Speaker 3 (13:19):
I would say most of the games we've seen so
far in this tournament on either side, boys our girls
have been very physical contest, and the first quarters have
been kind of the team's feeling it out and seeing
how they're gonna call. Yeah, and I think, really, I
know with you, Tooto, they'd rather have more of.

A physical game. That way, they can really get after
you defensively. I'm sure Student goes probably the same way.
So we got two really good teams here today and
I hope we're in for a good game.

Well back to back days for us of Action, but
we're going to keep rolling on tomorrow. We've got our
double header down at the Complication Center.

Yeah, two o'clock start for the Circleville Tigers as a
take their twenty game regular win.

Playing guy Y Academy at two pm and then we're
gonna take a break and then we'll come back at
five point thirty for these Uni Edo Sherman's and the
boys team is going to take on Logan ELTM, So
that'll be an interesting game too. We've seen the Logan
ELTM this year and we know how they can really
shoot the ball. So gonna be a fun day down
to OU tomorrow and hopefully if you can't make it,

have a game on Monday night as Zame Trace has
made it to the Convo and they will take on.

I believe Eastern Brown. And then Tuesday, after win last night,
the Diana Warriors will take on lucasfil Valley Tuesday from Waverley.
So a lot of games coming up here for us
and we love it that way.

Yeah, there's Unionta Boys.

They earned an extended break here at the end of
the season, playing their first tournament game. Will be at
the convo. That's pretty good for them. Many of them
made the drip over here and they started their student section.
We've got bleachers on both ends, kind of a unique
feature of this gymnasium. So the un Yoda student section

is right under Uniyoda's basket.

Yeah, and again Unioda will be their benches to our
radio left in the studentville at a right as we
sit up in the crow's nest here right at half court,
so we got a great view of the court and
no one obstructing our view.

Well, we look at the uniform matchup for these two teams.
Unioda is in their road black uniforms. They've got the
purple and gold trim. The numerals are in purple as
well as the lettering with the gold trim around it.
And for the Steubenville BIV Red they're in their home
white uniforms with black trim, red letters and numerals with

black trim around that as well. Both these teams the
number one seed in their respective district. This district finally
is a combined between the Southeast and the East district.

The winner moving on to the regional tournament.

We're set in the center circle at Smith for Unioda
and Fleming for Steubenville.

Uni Yoda is really guarding them well and keeping it

At that time, Dennis comes away with it up the
right side Smith Smith into the lane, floats shot backs
to her. Yeah, she's so good in the open floor
and she's always on balance when she goes up to

to go here in the first period, Sawcock gets it
across the timeline to Bowers, back to Sawcock, and she

Early on here, as I said, Stubenville really leary of
the defensive pressure of Unioda.

from the first half.

Yeah, Unyoto shot twelve to twenty five, shooting forty eight percent.
Second quarter wasn't as good as the first quarter, but

of five at the free throw line. They ended up
with nine turnovers there in that first half. Uncharacteristic of
Uni Yoto. Stupinville was ten of thirty one, shooting thirty

They're moving on to the regional semis. That game will
be on Thursday. They'll take on the winner of Toledo's
Central Catholic and Manison. That game will be Thursday, March fifth. Coach,
what a game we saw tonight. Yeah, I'll tell you what.
It was not pretty at times.

It was very physical, but for Uniodo they were able
to get things done and make stops when they needed to.
But I know Coach Miller is probably going to look
at this game and say, we got lucky here because
we got.

To handle the ball a lot better. We got to
rebound the ball a lot better if we're going to
advance further than this. U Nyoda stormed out to an
unbelievable first quarter. They scored twenty four points only gave
up fourteen. But after that, the Stupenville rules, we saw
a lot of fight out of them. They got right
into un Yodo and it was a game from the

rest of the way on. Yeah, they did. They took
pretty much everyone else out for Uni Yodo.

Miley Smith scored all the points in the second half.
Except for five for un Yodo. They did a good
job of shutting down the rest of the girls, but
Miley was able to get what she needed to and
you know, go on to the victory.

the gymnasium. Steubenville is presented their runner up trophy here

final next week down at ou Over on the boys side, Yeah,

Really got to congratulate that Stupenville team. A record setting
season for them. We talked about the twenty two wins
up to twenty three after that district semi game.

high school basketball career. Scored her two thousandth career point
back on February the twelfth. Not sure where she stands now,

And you know, thirty four points here tonight, they definitely
needed all thirty four.

That first quarter made seemed easy, but the rest of
the way it was definitely a hard fought game for
the Juniorota Shermans and Jeff Miller now being introduced and
getting his medal and catch off to him and his staff.
As you know, they're able to get another district title here.

Which did not come easy. Another district title for coach
Jeff Miller, the coach of the Year and has solidified
himself as the all time winning his coach and Uniodo
girls basketball history. Hopefully we can get Coach Miller up

Stubeville was able to tie the game up for the
first time all night, for all afternoon. I should say
just under a minute to go at fifty one and
Uniota call time out, ran to play, got Miley Smith
the ball and she was able to make it.

Went up two. They got a miss on the end
for Stubentville and then.

Miley Smith makes two free throws there with about seven
seconds to go for the final score of.

Fifty five fifty one. Looking at scoring for Unio, Miley
Smith led all scores with thirty four points. Kiara Beard

All those ten came in the first quarter, seven points
for Charlotte Dennis, three points for Maggie Hobert, and one
point for Jillian Matthey. For Studentville, they were led tonight
by Nila mcshan she had eighteen points, twelve points by

The regional tournament will take place at Ohio Dominican University.
First game will be on Thursday, March the fifth, and
then the finals will take on We'll be on Saturday,
March the seventh, we're going to go to both of
our Alba moderns. Now, We're going down to the Ohio
University on Sunday and Monday, and then we'll be back

on Thursday at the Alma Modern of Coach lou posted
there at Higher Dominica.

Well, here's the issue with that, Chris, is if you
Andyoto and Circle Bowl Boys when they will be playing
Thursday night down at OU.

So we'll see how this all works out as far
as coverage goes.

But if we're able to get possibly two stations to
cover games on Thursday night, we'll get that done. If not,

Two really good games, two really good team Cervileville hoping
to continue their wonderful season with Midstate League title for
the first time in over forty years, and Unido, with
a gold ball again, tries to get their tournament experience
started with a win against Logan Elm, which will be
a very tough game for them, So.

You know, tomorrow it'll be fun down there though to
you first time there this year for us. Tell you what,
we've been treated to some very good tournament games so far.
I believe that don't continue tomorrow and then Monday and
then Thursday, and we've got a lot of games that
we're gonna be working coming up.

No problem with that. We love getting the spotlight these
young boys and girls as they accomplished stellar things for
our region.

Yeah, and again I'll think we're gonna get the coach
Millery's down there talking and enjoying the district championship, and

about how proud he is of his girls. You know,
Miley Smith did a wonderful job for Mere tonight offensively,
but boy, this was a battle. You know, they gutted

one out here in the district final. It did not
come easy. It was not you know, probably stuff they've
been used to. But while they're gonna probably need tomorrow off,
I think these girls are going to be tired and sore,
and you know, congratulations to all u n Yodo, the
whole team. And they get to go on to the

regionals where you know, you get to the next level
in high school basketball.

And the original this year is up at a Hio
