Speaker 4 (00:50):
We celebrated her, and my wife wanted to cook, so
she cooked instead of let's go out and cooked for
mom and and everyone had some great neat well, my
my mother in law's great grandchildren, great nieces for me,
came by and had a great time.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
What a couple of them, three and five. I got
to work yesterday.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
I was going to say that is woo energy.
Speaker 4 (01:18):
They're fun and the oldest she said. She said, uncle,
I'll give you some of my energy. So she puts
her hand on her head.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
I'll give you some of mine. Transmitted.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
It was very How about your mother's day?
Speaker 2 (01:30):
It was good, It was good, Thank you, very nice.
There was dinner was brought to me.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
It was brought to you.
Speaker 1 (01:38):
Yeah, we weren't. We weren't going to try to go
to you know, it would have been and I.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Would have been happy to pull poor a bowl of
cereal for the day, but they said no. And so yeah,
it was nice, uh, I said. In fact, I should
have brought it for lunch today.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
There you go, left over.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Good and just a quiet day, uh, nice, quiet And
just like I said, I was kind of planning to
have my mind all set on a rainy, cool day.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
So I was gonna I'll just do laundry and watch movies.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
H Yeah. But that didn't happen.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
Oh yeah I did.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
But I should have had plans to be outside, so
but no, I watched a movie, did some laundry, you know,
just you know, just a quiet kind of a day. Indeed,
on the show today last week, as you very well know,
we heard first learned of a major change coming.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
For the Circle City Classic.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
The Classic, as everyone knows, or maybe you don't know,
a local decades long celebration of the HBCU football tradition
that's been here in the city of Indianapolis, well a
long time, long, forty years, thirty forty years. Well, anyway,
today the President and CEO of Indiana Black Expol joins
(02:58):
us with more on the new plan and new direction.
Also joining us for that convo is going to be
Swift with our sister station.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Yeah, B Swift.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Swift is gonna sit in Hot one hundred point nine,
so he'll be here. All of that is coming up
in our second hour right now.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
Three one seven four eight zero thirteen ten.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Three one seven four eight zero thirteen ten lines are
open whatever may be on your mind. Also coming up
we as we promised, if you were paying attention last week,
what were we saying last week?
Speaker 1 (03:33):
All last week? Eric, If everybody was paid, there is a.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
Pretty good chance we would have celebration of choirs. Yes,
tickets coming your way.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
We told you that Gino said, yes that, he said,
give me time to get it worked out.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
And guess what he's.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
Got It worked worked he's got it worked out, so
as promised, yet another chance. This is probably the last
chance though, because the show's coming up May thirty first,
and I think Geno has hosted what one, two, three,
four giveaways I believe so sponsored. He has been quite generous.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
Beyond Oh, he absolutely.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
Has beyond bed generous. Yeah, yeah, so, but we're gonna
give away. He left him for.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Us to give away, and we'll do just that. So
that's gonna come up. So please stay tuned and keep
listening for your chance to win, which could be which
could be very well, could be coming up anytime, any time,
listening exactly right now. Lines are open for whatever may
be on your mind. Lines are open for whatever may
(04:35):
be on your mind. Eric, you have a little bit
longer distance to drive, I don't know. Yeah, you do,
you do. But I'm just saying you're not unlike a
lot of people here in this building that have long
commutes to work. And there's nothing I mean, America does
it every day, you know, a longer commute, you know,
to and from work.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
So that's that's all good.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
But just a short time ago, very short time ago, actually,
Donald Trump said in a phone interview with CBS news
that he plans to suspend the federal gas tax and
we're quoting here for a period of time. Trump says
he thinks it's a great idea to take the gas
(05:20):
tax off for a period of time. He says, when
it goes down, we'll let it phase back.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
And yeah, I heard a little bit of that.
Speaker 6 (05:30):
You.
Speaker 4 (05:30):
I was on the phone listener, have a question on something. Okay,
So you mentioned that he's planning to. Is he planning
to or considering?
Speaker 1 (05:38):
Well, no, he plans to.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Oh he does to.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
Yeah, prices, it says, your prices have sorted over fifty
percent since the start of the y around war on
February twenty eighth, hitting a high of over four point
five to two on Sunday, according to Triple A Automobile Club.
But and analysts say the prices are likely to remain
high with Iran blocking access to the street of for moves,
(06:02):
that that commerce, that center of commerce.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
And that commerce there.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Yes, but suspending the excise taxes, according to analysts, which
would be eighteen point four cents per gallon on gas
and twenty four point four cents a gallon on diesel,
that requires an Act of Congress and pausing it would
cost the federal government about half a billion dollars a week.
But following the president's comments, Republican Senator Josh Holly said
(06:28):
Monday that he would introduce legislation to suspend the federal
gas text.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
So I guess Congress is going to back him up
on that.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
So they will do that before they leave for their break.
Speaker 1 (06:40):
They didn't say, what.
Speaker 4 (06:42):
You know, they have a tendency. We're going to do
this and then take a long break.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
And you're waiting and the next one they have coming up.
They just had easter, they get summer.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
I think they do take a break sometime this summer.
I think James mentioned.
Speaker 7 (06:53):
That last week.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
Yeah, yep, you know what. You're right.
Speaker 4 (06:55):
So it's like, yeah, no, guy, my thing is, and
I've said it before, don't take a break. Things are
right now in shambles. Stay there, work, figure it out,
get it straightened out. Then take a break. That's what
I think they should do.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
But that's just me. I'm just one person.
Speaker 1 (07:11):
Well, they need to call you.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
They should. I tell hey, don't take a break now. Yeah,
that's not the time to take a break.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
I would agree, and they should know better. And if
they had any kind of leadership in Mike Johnston, Yes,
that would happen, but he seems content to keep them
away as long as possible for whatever, you know, for
as long as.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
Leaving the job incomplete.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
Can you imagine what would happen to you or I
if we just decide, well, I'm not gonna come in
the next few days, I'm gonna.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Take some time off.
Speaker 1 (07:40):
I'm gonna take the next month or two.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
Things are not done yet. We're gonna leave it like
it is.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
Yeah, yeah, figured it.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
Yeah, figure it out. We wouldn't have a job, No,
we would not.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
But if we were convicted felons, we wouldn't have a job,
That's very true. We wouldn't have a place to live,
we wouldn't have a job or whatever. But he's got
government housing. Convicted felon got government housing.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
You know what is that?
Speaker 2 (08:01):
They talk about folks on welfare that are that have
been in prison and what have you, and they're living
off the government.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
Yeah, okay, Okay, here do we go.
Speaker 8 (08:11):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (08:12):
But I guess it's all in how you phrase.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
It, I suppose, so I guess it's all that that
you phrase it anyway. So again, Uh, the uh several
Democratic lawmakers have already introduced legislation to either pause or
lower it. So this is something that's getting bi partisan support,
it would appear, uh. They the revenue from the federal
(08:36):
gas tax goes toward the Highway Trust Fund to construct
and repair roadways. It also pays for other transit projects. So, uh,
the fund is going to be a little short for
the next several months. Maybe there there's no there's no
specific date and time. And then with Mike Brawn, Uh,
(08:59):
extending Indiana is again, how you know, I think we
pay more pay for more tax than we do gas.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
I think so too.
Speaker 4 (09:06):
And our gas tax at one point, what was the
highest in what fourth and highest in the country for
a while, and I don't understand that with our roads
and the condition they're in.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
We'll say that obviously. This morning on the way in Tina,
there was this.
Speaker 4 (09:23):
I always try to stay away from semiyes as much
as I can, but you never know it by the
front of my vehicle. I'm driving along in the far
left lane and this rock flies up through the air,
taps the roof and I'm all, I'm back here, way
behind off to the left, trying to get pass and
it so, and then you got a poddle.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
So well, yeah, my daughter's windshield. She was telling me
the windshield on her car. She was just driving and
all of a sudden a rock came flying out of nowhere.
Probably popped one of those, so probably probably, But yeah,
it's hard. It's hard on the highway to because you
have so little maneuverability, you have speed. So you remember
(10:11):
when people used to put those what do they call
them bras in front of the Remember that was all
the rage. What happened to that folks that I don't
see bras anywhere.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
On the front of cars.
Speaker 8 (10:21):
Cars.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
You don't see them anymore at all. I think they
still make them.
Speaker 2 (10:24):
But people that would drive up and down I could
see you having one. I am a.
Speaker 4 (10:28):
Highway I certainly do, and maybe you should consider and
something I should have done. I think when I bought
the vehicles, had the ceramic protection done to the front.
I never expected all of this to happen. Driving on
the interstate, of course, every day, back and forth, but
it's I may even look into getting it, getting it done,
(10:50):
having correction done on what have you, and just having
them tell me I have.
Speaker 1 (10:54):
A short interstate stretch, but not alone.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
Not along. That's good. I never knew there's so many
rocks out there.
Speaker 1 (11:00):
I was going to say, there's still the rocks and
different things.
Speaker 2 (11:04):
One thing I did do when you were talking about
potholes circling back and but he doesn't want to hear
about a pothole situation.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
But I did take my car.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
Remember I told you the tire that I didn't feel
so badly because this one the hole seemed to be
in the center, which could be repaired. Well, I took
it to get it repaired, and so the mechanic came
back out and said, well, no, we can't repair this
because there's damage to the sidewalls. Now, granted, the guy
from Triple A, who was a tire expert, worked with
(11:38):
my tire, turned it around show even you know, marked
where the hole was and saw nothing. Now I'm going
to give them the benefit of the doubt. But he
said that that's the only place I see. He said,
your tire is perfect. It looks like it's brand new.
I said, it is brand new. He said there that
(12:00):
there's nothing wrong. He said, and I can't you know,
there's no air or anything. And he did not He
went both outside and inside. There were no slashes when
that guy went took the car, took the tire to
the back, came back out in the lobby and said, uh,
this tire can't be repaired because the side is damaged
(12:20):
and we can't fix anything on the side. And he
had a piece of chalk drawn around a little slit
on the sidewalk.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
Really, you know, there was a part of me, I
I I'm well, I feel a little suspicious.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
About that because that guy's like, you had it.
Speaker 3 (12:41):
Checked and it wasn't there, and then all of a sudden,
there it is. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (12:44):
Yeah, that makes me feel uh huh, yeah, you might
have done something.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
You went back there and did something, yeah, in order
to get me, and I didn't. I wasn't able to
see all the way in the back. Now I'm not
I'm not gonna.
Speaker 1 (12:56):
Hopefully that they did.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
I hope it's not the case, but suspicion rose up
in me. I mean, you've seen those little cartoons where
your bloodprint, you know, the red goes from zero to
and I'm like, I have never taken a tire to
get it repaired where the technician came back and said
this can be repaired let's fix it. They always seem
to find something somewhere on that tire that makes it
(13:20):
impossible to fix. So you just got to buy a
new one.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
Is it the same tire store that you hadn't repaired before?
Speaker 2 (13:27):
No purchase, No, I just I just picked a it's
a franchise, though, I just drove into it because I
thought it was an easy fix.
Speaker 1 (13:35):
First of all, I should have known it was.
Speaker 2 (13:36):
I should have known I was in trouble when he
was trying to tell me what kind of car I had.
Speaker 3 (13:43):
The guy at the time, he.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
Was punching in his computer and I said, I told him,
and he said, well, no, this is a you've got.
He said, what's your license plate number?
Speaker 1 (13:56):
I gave it to him.
Speaker 2 (13:57):
He said, well, no, that's I said, no, it's not,
and he said yeah, because it was the model is
a three fifty And I said, no, it's not a
three fifty And he said, well, I said, would you
like to come with now? The one area where I
didn't want to pull rent But I know what the
devil I'm talking about.
Speaker 1 (14:14):
I drive the car every.
Speaker 7 (14:15):
Day, so yeah, yeah, And.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
He was arguing with me and saying, well, are you
sure it's not well. I said, come here, let's just
go look, you know, like you do a first grader.
Speaker 3 (14:25):
Yes, of course.
Speaker 1 (14:26):
I said, now what does that say right there?
Speaker 2 (14:28):
And I said, there is no three, there's no five,
and there's no zero on my car.
Speaker 1 (14:35):
Yeah, and he said, oh, okay, okay.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
And so then he goes back in and he says, well,
I said, you know, let's just assume that I know
a little bit more about my car than that computer does.
Speaker 1 (14:46):
Okay, of course, because I don't.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
Know what that computer's telling you. But I should have
known I was in trouble then. Plus, he said, well,
I looked online for this particular place and said from
twenty to forty dollars, and he told me it was
going to be forty dollars. I said, okay, you're gonna
high end. Okay, I don't I don't really care. It's
cheaper than a new tire.
Speaker 1 (15:04):
So he uh.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
When he came back out, he said, this can't be fixed,
and he had the piece of chalk around it. He said,
this tire looks brand news. So if you have it
a warrantied, I said I do, and he said, well
I take it back or whatever. I said, uh huh
I will, and he said you wanted to. I said, yes,
put my spear back on there. Uh huh, don nut
back on there. And I'm getting out here and I'm
not coming back.
Speaker 1 (15:26):
And I didn't. I did not believe a word he said.
Speaker 4 (15:30):
I wouldn't go back there again at all. Especially you're
going to try to tell He's going to try to
tell you what.
Speaker 3 (15:34):
You draw, but I drive when you know what you draw.
Speaker 1 (15:36):
Well, I'm I got uh and that. You know a
lot of people don't. They just don't think it's like,
I know what kind of car I drive?
Speaker 2 (15:46):
Yeah, the year, I said, do you want me to
get the registration or something? Anyway, So what ended up
happening was uh uh, you know. I I got online
and I googled and then I asked Sirih and Syrian
google SYNCD up and so I went to this place again,
not meaning to give you the name of it because
they are not advertising with us, but exactly. But they
(16:09):
had top marks, you know, five star, and so I
called them. I went out there. They looked over everything
and said blah blah blah, this is this, this is that,
and they saw the tire and they said, well no,
but you know, here's what we can do.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
And so they immediately quoted.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
Tire prices and said, if you do X, Y and Z,
or if you pay this way, we can knock fifty
dollars off.
Speaker 1 (16:36):
If you do. So they they were really really nice.
Speaker 2 (16:39):
I ended up getting I've got new tires all the
way around, with the exception of well, no, no, all
of them, all of them, and so that's that's what
happened with that.
Speaker 1 (16:52):
There was one that you know.
Speaker 2 (16:55):
I told them, I said, let's just do all of them,
and that way we'll start from scrap all.
Speaker 3 (17:00):
So you replaced all your tires.
Speaker 2 (17:02):
All except I replaced all three except one. They said,
we can't charge you three for four tires when this
one's brand new. Man, we just can't. And so they
gave me a super price on three. So I replaced
all three. I just got rid of the others. Got
rid of all of them so that I know now
that they're But anyway, long story short, long story short.
(17:26):
I spent a part of my Mother's Day week and
at least Saturday morning getting that taken care of. But no,
I'm not going to go to those places. I'm not
going to go to a place like that.
Speaker 1 (17:35):
Anymore.
Speaker 3 (17:35):
Oh no, absolutely not.
Speaker 2 (17:37):
And when the Triple A guy and then the guy
in the in the in the store was trying to
tell me, the Triple A guy, that's what they do,
the tires spent. The Triple A guy didn't know what
he was talking about.
Speaker 3 (17:47):
Oh, so he was clueless what he was talking about.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
I said, he even lined it up for you so
you could go directly to He lined it up with
a piece of metal in my trunk so that the
guy could just look directly at him and see it.
He said, that is the only thing, Miss Cosby, that
we have here.
Speaker 1 (18:02):
I said, okay, okay.
Speaker 4 (18:04):
Boy, there's always somebody trying to rip somebody off and
get extra money.
Speaker 3 (18:08):
That's what sat. And that's clear. That's clear in so
many areas. Yeah, every area.
Speaker 1 (18:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
So three one seven for eight zero thirteen ten three
one seven four eight zero thirteen ten. As we said earlier,
the lines are open, got some stuff to do.
Speaker 1 (18:22):
We're going to give away some tickets.
Speaker 2 (18:24):
I'm going to be talking our friend and colleague B
Swift is going to be joining us with our conversation
with President's CEO of Indiana Black Expo coming up in
our number two and then I wanted to get to
the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus.
Speaker 1 (18:39):
They are about to start.
Speaker 2 (18:41):
They're about to start their town hall series, which is
so very important because we've got the mid term general
elections coming up in November. So yeah, and they're going
all over the state. You know, all of these opportunities
are created for you. I wish we could find even
better ways. You know, we have social media, we have this,
(19:02):
we have word of mouth, but I just wish we
could find more ways and better ways to get everybody
educated and ready to go, because we don't want you afraid.
If you see somebody in uniform at one of the
polling stations, which.
Speaker 1 (19:15):
We hear that, that may be happy. So there's just
a whole lot of stuff.
Speaker 2 (19:18):
So these town halls are going to be really, really important.
So we're going to get to those very shortly as well.
Speaker 1 (19:25):
So let's go. Let's go to the phone line, the
real Deborah. Deborah, how are.
Speaker 9 (19:28):
You, hey, Miss Tina, how are you.
Speaker 2 (19:31):
I'm doing great. I'm doing great. Belated Happy Mother's Day.
Speaker 8 (19:34):
To you, Thank you, which is every day every day.
Speaker 1 (19:38):
Okay, we don't.
Speaker 8 (19:39):
Stop being mother, We don't know, we never stopped fifty
five day five. Yes, yes, yes, ma'am. So what I
wanted to say was I want a few things. I'm
so sorry about your tire. Oh I hate I hate
(20:02):
that slick jack move. That the that the people do
at the repair places. That's a slick jack move.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
Well, I don't know that they did it.
Speaker 2 (20:12):
I'm just saying my suspicions went from zero to one thousand.
Speaker 8 (20:16):
That's called discernment. You knew they was lying, they was lying,
and they knew they was lying. But but I had
to pay eleven thousand dollars slick jack move eleven dollars,
eleven thousand, eleven thousand. So when you think you pay anybody,
you know? And then they turned around and tell me
my car was ready. But we your Cadillac converter androp
(20:41):
beat up like you can and come on, your Cadillact
converter is bad. We need four thousand more dollars. I said, well,
I'll tell you what. Put it back on there. You
never took it off. You gave you show me someone
else's catalytic converter. And then you tried to do the
(21:02):
flim flail, and I know flim flips. Let me tell
you something. Put it back on there. He didn't like that.
He didn't like that, But anyway, I was kind about
the A E S. I applied for a E S
in October. I got my letter in April. My my
(21:24):
bill doubled, and I was wondering if anybody out there
have they ever got applied for ae S got approved
for it, and all of a sudden, your your uh
it was only for the electric part.
Speaker 1 (21:37):
Well, are you the AS budgeting or a E S assistance.
Speaker 8 (21:41):
The the E A P. I'm so sorry, the Energy
Assistance program? Okay, but my A E S bill double?
I noticed my grandmother has She used to say that
all the time. I'm like, brand stop, it stopped. And
now I'm noticing. I wonder if anybody else out there
(22:04):
when they apply for EAP does their AES bill the
electric portion of their bill? Does it double? Because I
noticed I started going back a little bit in my
application processes. This one is the first time. It took
over six months to get approved, but they did not
(22:26):
approve the gas portion of it, and they told me
that I still had a balance on there and said
that once it gets down to a certain amount to
then to contact them back, which would mean they would
be out of funds by the time it gets down
because they waited six months letter if I was approved
(22:47):
or not approved, you know. So I thought, wow, and
I said, I wonder if ms tinnachin figure out find
out if anybody else that applied for the EAP.
Speaker 1 (22:59):
Energy is assistance y assistance.
Speaker 8 (23:01):
And did their bill double. But my grandmother would say
all the time, every time she applied for and got
approved for, that's the only time her bill would double.
It's like wow, and I love it, it's sure enough.
But this time, like I said, it didn't take six months.
This is the only time I've applied for that. It
(23:24):
delayed it so long. It has never taken six months.
Speaker 2 (23:30):
So you think they're gouging the assistance program by doubling your.
Speaker 1 (23:34):
I've heard I've heard of that before.
Speaker 8 (23:38):
Definitely wondered if anybody else has gotten that. Because my
house is energy efficient, I don't turn on like right now,
my heat or my area is not one, you know,
So I'm just wondering any other time it just it
actually doubles. Let me let me.
Speaker 1 (23:57):
Mention that the rates with the usage.
Speaker 2 (24:02):
Yeah, and you can compare your usage from uh well
before or whatever. If the usage is pretty much the same.
Why would the rate.
Speaker 8 (24:11):
Yes, yes, and so so where and and and so?
Where is that? It's in the TAXI see when you
you were talking about taxes. So it's in the taxes.
So if you if you suspend. So I wondered when
big head over there on Pennsylvania was talking about he's
(24:32):
gonna suspend. It looks good, smells good. I don't believe
nothing to come out of his mouth. But I wondered,
I'm gonna get you started, because boy, you get so injured.
But I wonder if it applies to the natural gas
tax because we I mean, come on.
Speaker 6 (24:49):
I.
Speaker 1 (24:51):
Don't know, but yeah, I just wondered.
Speaker 8 (24:55):
I'm like, wow, I'm and I'm you know, I'm a
bill reader. I learned how to read the utility bills
when I was a little kid. You know, numbers, And
I'm thinking, out my watch is quality to kill a watch?
I look at the KA I was checking right now,
go ahead.
Speaker 3 (25:13):
I'm sorry.
Speaker 4 (25:14):
I was checking to see if black Rock owned a
Yes yet not yet. It's in the process, and I'm
thinking maybe that might have been it.
Speaker 3 (25:22):
But they don't know, they and.
Speaker 2 (25:24):
They may be delayed even more because of some uh,
some opposition and some pushbacks, some of which locally led
by a frequent guest of the show, representative Cherish Prior
here uh you know, at the state House and some others.
So they they're not getting as easy a path as
they normally thought that they are, as they perhaps thought
(25:47):
that they would good normal they.
Speaker 3 (25:48):
Don't need it, should reject it.
Speaker 8 (25:51):
I didn't know because because I found it was a
different company that supposedly had bought or were interested bid it,
that bid it for a e s.
Speaker 9 (26:03):
Remember I called you.
Speaker 8 (26:04):
And they they said that Kiosk was going to be
they were going to own be owned by someone else, uh,
some type of company. So maybe they passed it on
to Blackrock. But as soon as mister Eric said that,
I thought, oh lord, oh now, but I just don't
understand how, you know what what's going on with these
(26:27):
taxes on the utilities down on people. Some people just
go pay the bill. I like to know what I'm paying,
Where is my money going?
Speaker 2 (26:36):
But even when taxes there, your your utility bill should
not have doubled.
Speaker 1 (26:42):
Now there's no way that should have happened.
Speaker 8 (26:45):
Another thing is said is do not pay now. They
got me like that before UH Centence Citizens Energy Group
sent me. Every month they would say, do not pay,
and I ended up paying about seven hundred dollars of
money they said I owed because there was an error
that they made. And this was in I think twenty
(27:06):
twenty two. So you know, it's just so much shaky
business going on with these utility companies. And I was
I would suggest anybody. I mean, I don't know who
I could call and ask about it and definitely wouldn't
be a yes, but I would suggest to anybody look
at it, pay attention to what the bill because like
(27:26):
my dad just used to say, don't just pay attention
to what people say, but pay attention to what they're
not saying. So I love how things are going with
Discerning because you definitely anybody else, especially females, when they
need a repair with our go ahead. I ain't trying
to fight y'all to go ahead. No no, no, put
(27:48):
it back on there.
Speaker 5 (27:49):
Let me.
Speaker 1 (27:51):
That's what they did. Give me peace sign please, Okay.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
We're going to see what we can find out too,
because I know the I thank you for the Indianautily
Regulatory Commission UH, the Indiana Attorney General's Office Consumer Protection
division and even uh, there's there's a couple of others,
but we'll try to get a little bit more clarity
as to where customers.
Speaker 3 (28:16):
Oh.
Speaker 4 (28:16):
Absolutely, I saw a video Housing Commission over the weekend
that they did a video on Indiana specifically, and I
think they mentioned maybe As and some other companies, and
they said that even across the country, they've noticed that
with all these data centers that are being forced on people, basically,
they've noticed a rise and utility bills when it comes
(28:38):
to electricity and water levels, you know.
Speaker 1 (28:41):
Being offected. Even though they declare that that is not.
Speaker 3 (28:44):
Oh that will not oh, that won't happen.
Speaker 1 (28:47):
It's not going to happen.
Speaker 3 (28:48):
Believe us.
Speaker 1 (28:49):
We believe this bill.
Speaker 3 (28:51):
Oh yeah, if you pay it for me, then how
about that.
Speaker 1 (28:53):
Indeed, let's take a quick break. When we come back.
Speaker 2 (28:56):
We still got tickets to give away, We still got
calls that we're going to get to. Line are still open,

Speaker 1 (29:38):
And we are back with Community Connection.
Speaker 2 (29:40):
Lines are open three one seven for eight zero thirteen
ten going to be given away tickets to DJ Geno's
celebration of choirs coming up shortly. We were just talking
with the Real Debora about a situation she had with
energy assistance programming and her bill doubling and looks like See.
Speaker 1 (29:58):
Says she had the same suit situation? Is the real
debors See?
Speaker 5 (30:01):
Go ahead?
Speaker 1 (30:02):
How are you.
Speaker 8 (30:04):
Trying to push that?
Speaker 9 (30:05):
That's only They're gonna be the one regulator?
Speaker 2 (30:09):
Oh okay, okay, see.
Speaker 3 (30:14):
Are you there? I think she has.
Speaker 1 (30:18):
Are you there.
Speaker 8 (30:22):
This morning? Knocked out?
Speaker 3 (30:24):
I'll uh yeh see on Holden will come back?
Speaker 1 (30:27):
Se okay, okay, Tessa, go ahead, how are you?
Speaker 6 (30:37):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (30:38):
I was wondering if anybody else has had this. A
E S coming around to your house leaving flyers on
the door.
Speaker 6 (30:49):
Stating that they want you to sign off to let
them bury the electrical wires. Underground. At first they were
sending some company was sending letters. I just threw them away,
and then AES came and knocked on the door and
(31:09):
just happened to catch me there. They had the little
plaque in the AES truck and they said they was
gonna They said, oh, we.
Speaker 9 (31:17):
Won't destroy your property.
Speaker 6 (31:18):
It's gonna be on the outskirts where the sidewalk is,
the grass behind the sidewalk to the street. And he said, oh, well,
we have a notaries that we can get out here
as soon as today to a notarizing. And I said, no,
I'm not signing anything for AES and they said well,
(31:39):
he said well. He got kind of angry. He said, well,
the city owns that part of the street. I said, well,
if they own that part of the street, why are
you here asking me to sign And they just keep
calling and calling.
Speaker 5 (31:51):
I don't even askwer them.
Speaker 11 (31:54):
Have you heard anything about that?
Speaker 1 (31:56):
No, this is the first I've ever heard of that.
I mean I seen I've seen mailers where.
Speaker 2 (32:02):
They've you know, AEES has volunteered to come to your
house and make it more energy efficient if you give
them a no, if you give them an appointment, they
will give you a a thermostad or air fresh air fresh.
Speaker 1 (32:20):
Air purifire.
Speaker 6 (32:21):
Yeah, yeah, I'm not talking about that. I've had that
done some years back. Not talking about that. I'm talking
about them digging up your property the lines the run.
Speaker 8 (32:31):
Some areas have electrical wires above in certain neighborhoods.
Speaker 6 (32:37):
They don't do it now on new properties. They're buried underground,
and they're saying they want to bury them underground.
Speaker 2 (32:47):
Well, my understanding is they usually do those on easements
or or city owned property, right, I mean, because yeah,
is that true.
Speaker 6 (32:56):
That's that's what he ended up in with a city owns.
I said, well, at the city, why are you here
to get me to sign off on it?
Speaker 8 (33:04):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (33:06):
Why are That's a question that they say.
Speaker 6 (33:10):
Oh yeah, they've been asking me that they've been sent them.
They hung up, They hung the little card on the door.
The man gave me his number and stuff. Uh, they've
been calling and calling and calling non stop, but.
Speaker 3 (33:24):
Never answered your question.
Speaker 8 (33:26):
Oh, he said, well we can.
Speaker 6 (33:27):
I said, you expect for me to just sign something
because you're standing here at my door. Then he said, oh,
well we can get you a package detailing everything. I said, well,
why didn't you bring it with you.
Speaker 3 (33:40):
In the corner right there, and.
Speaker 6 (33:44):
Yeah, oh, he said, we can get it for you.
We can get it for you.
Speaker 8 (33:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (33:54):
So I just said, I don't trust nothing that a
E s says. I'm not signing anything.
Speaker 12 (34:01):
He said, well we need you to sign.
Speaker 6 (34:03):
Well, I'm not signing. I'm here on the east side
off of thirty six and Pranks the road.
Speaker 1 (34:10):
One more thing we need to look up and find
out more about I. That's the first. That's the first
heard that I've heard that one.
Speaker 6 (34:18):
And I'm scared they're going to trick some some people
that don't you know, know not some older people. I'm older,
but I know not to to sign it into signing.
Speaker 8 (34:33):
And then they said they when they sent the letter,
it was from some attorney's office or.
Speaker 6 (34:38):
Something saying that they wanted to bury the some lines
in the back of my yard. And I told that guy,
I said, well, I got letters. He said, oh, I
know about those use the private companies. And they wanted
me to pay five thousand dollars.
Speaker 8 (34:54):
And then you're.
Speaker 6 (34:56):
Signing that part of your property over to them. Yes,
I'm gonna say if I still have that and I
would like that look then too.
Speaker 8 (35:04):
Okay, Yeah, you're possible.
Speaker 1 (35:06):
Okay, we'll see who. Yeah, we'll figure it out.
Speaker 8 (35:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (35:09):
You happy to thank you, thank you.
Speaker 6 (35:11):
And next time, next time they leave that voicemail, I'm
going to get that number and I'm going to call
in a path and on.
Speaker 2 (35:18):
Okay, perfect, perfect, love to have it all righty, thank
you appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (35:23):
Yeah, interesting situation there.
Speaker 4 (35:25):
Yeah, Tina, I'm looking something up on that, trying to
see there's anything on it. Mmmm, says as Indiana's been
expanding and maintaining an underground power network downtown which includes transformers, cables,
and control equipment. Doesn't say anything about online outside of downtown.
Speaker 3 (35:45):
So interesting, but yeah it is, isn't it.
Speaker 1 (35:48):
They've been converting from that steam.
Speaker 3 (35:51):
Oh they have for a long long time.
Speaker 1 (35:53):
That's those little manhole cover explosion.
Speaker 3 (35:55):
Yeah, those explosions. It took place.
Speaker 1 (35:57):
Yeah, yep, yep. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (35:58):
Uh three one in four eight zero thirteen ten three
one seven for eight zero thirteen ten.
Speaker 5 (36:04):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (36:04):
You know, Eric, now might be a good time to
let folks start calling in about the DJ GINO celebration.
Speaker 4 (36:12):
Of why first, Yeah, May thirty first, May thirty first,
I Cluse Memorial Memorial.
Speaker 3 (36:20):
Well that's going to be happening.
Speaker 2 (36:22):
Yep, calling number five. If you're calling number five, you win.
In the meantime, let's go ahead and talk with the
with Jeff and calling number.
Speaker 1 (36:30):
Five wins to Jeff. Can hear are you there?
Speaker 6 (36:35):
Hear me?
Speaker 8 (36:35):
No?
Speaker 1 (36:36):
Uh uh, hello, we got here.
Speaker 3 (36:40):
You can hear you there.
Speaker 1 (36:42):
There's a whole lot of background dogs.
Speaker 13 (36:45):
Oh how about that?
Speaker 3 (36:48):
Yeah? That that's much better, much better, much better.
Speaker 13 (36:53):
D Do you know the name Rachel Scott?
Speaker 1 (36:56):
Yes, I know the name. Let me let me associate
it with it.
Speaker 2 (36:59):
She the one that well, anyway, go ahead, go ahead
in the Urban League Rachel Okay, go ahead, go ahead.
Speaker 13 (37:09):
Yeah, she's uh you know, African American.
Speaker 1 (37:12):
Oh yeah, that's the one that Trump berated, right.
Speaker 12 (37:16):
He called her the B word.
Speaker 1 (37:19):
Oh okay, okay, what did you say?
Speaker 13 (37:23):
You says you low i Q?
Speaker 1 (37:25):
Yeah, stupid question.
Speaker 11 (37:27):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (37:28):
I saw the exchange and it was it was despicable.
Speaker 13 (37:32):
Okay, Well, I'm just saying that once again. And I know,
like a couple of weeks agar that he got it
to a no done or he called her low i
Q and nasty and all that stuff. So, uh you
think Donalds are that he's very hush I sayd misogynistic.
Speaker 1 (37:50):
What was your question?
Speaker 13 (37:53):
Well, have you heard about him called Rachel Scott.
Speaker 1 (37:55):
Yeah, yeah, I saw that.
Speaker 2 (37:56):
I saw that exchange. But it's not unlike exchanges that
he has had with the number of women, especially black women.
April Ryan al sender you shall sender, uh and you
know all, yes, that's.
Speaker 1 (38:10):
Not unlike him.
Speaker 2 (38:11):
I mean was so your question was, do I think
he has a misogynistic bone in his body?
Speaker 8 (38:15):
Is that what I know?
Speaker 13 (38:17):
I think probably with a lot of men, that he
has misogynistic whatever.
Speaker 2 (38:23):
I I don't know, I you know, I no, I yeah,
But the first and foremost, he doesn't like to be
He hates the truth or he hates reality because that's
not where he lives.
Speaker 1 (38:36):
He doesn't live in the realm of reality where we
all are.
Speaker 2 (38:40):
So anybody that introduces it it infuriates him, especially coming
from a woman, I guess I would say, but if
you don't live in the same yeah, women of color,
same never never land that he lives in, and he's
he's going to chance dig.
Speaker 13 (38:57):
Yeah, Okay, that's what I wanted to do.
Speaker 12 (38:59):
I think if it's appeal that is you know that
he has these hostility towards women, which is pretty obvious,
and that's plants appeal was supposed with a lot of
young men that they have these attitudes about women as
well and close demographics whatever. So yeah, I just thought
that this ship there should be a lot more outrage
(39:20):
about this calling a female orported word.
Speaker 2 (39:24):
But you know what, Jeff, though, it's kind of like
trying to, as we say, a lot, take a sip
of water from a fire hose, because it's just as
soon as you camp out on that one, there comes
something even more outrageous or differently outrageous, or as saying,
you know, there's just it just comes rapid fire, one
after the other after the other after the other.
Speaker 1 (39:46):
And where do you plant the flag? I mean, where
do you you know?
Speaker 2 (39:50):
I I say, you plant the flag with voting and
you know, utilizing and flexing the muscle, you know, the
muscle that we all have. Because that he's pretty well
established in terms of misogyny, racism, authoritarianism, all of those
areas I do believe are pretty well established by now.
(40:14):
So the question to me is what do we do
about it?
Speaker 1 (40:19):
What do we do about it?
Speaker 2 (40:21):
I hesitate to say there's very little that he can
do in the way of how he talks to women
or treats women or what have you, that that would
surprise me, especially with Republicans sitting back and not you know,
correcting it or not apologizing for it, or not saying
this is not our party, that this is not how
(40:42):
we want to be represented, with them being absolutely silenced,
radio silent, for lack of a better phrase. So, I mean, yeah, Jeff,
he's yeah, yeah. It should not have been allowed to pass.
It shouldn't be There should be a lot more outrage.
(41:03):
But I'm not gonna say, Bud, everything that he does
should be outraged, should be seen as outrageous.
Speaker 3 (41:10):
I know, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (41:13):
Anyway, we are waiting on caller number five, caller number
five to the number three one, seven, four, eight, zero,
thirteen ten, and believe we may be close to having
a winner.
Speaker 14 (41:25):

Speaker 1 (44:03):

Speaker 3 (45:13):
She wasn't she was right, she wasn't whispering, because that's
that's the first.
Speaker 1 (45:17):
In a while I forgot to ask her. Well, I
didn't have to ask her she was at work.
Speaker 4 (45:23):

to interact with the public, to educate the public about
what went on the previous session and what lies ahead
for the upcoming session. And they're just about ready to
get started. They're just about ready to hit the road,

Speaker 2 (51:41):
But we've got them at libraries, They've got them at school,
you know, at Earlham College, the city hall, courtroom, union,
union halls.
Speaker 1 (51:51):
There, these are everywhere community centers.
Speaker 3 (51:53):
That's good, covering the whole state everywhere.
Speaker 5 (51:58):
So we got that.
Speaker 1 (52:00):
We got a special guest coming up with us.
Speaker 3 (52:02):
Yeah, he's sitting here with us.
Speaker 2 (52:04):
He is here the Main, the Main from our sister
station Hot one hundred point nine.
Speaker 5 (52:13):
That.
Speaker 1 (52:14):
Yeah, we're gonna talk about a couple of things.
Speaker 2 (52:17):
But Swift, you're also, in addition to a thousand other things,
you're also the MC for the Indiana Pacers and Fever
and Fever. And I won't ask you to sort out
the Pacers thing because I'm upset.
Speaker 7 (52:31):
I am hot man, and I'm not even mad. You
know a lot of people are mad at the ORG
for trading to pick. I'm not mad at him because
I think Zubak was a good, good trade off for
that right. I'm mad at the NBA because how do
we keep getting the shorter end of the stick. Well, yeah,
we've never had we're the longest running team, but not
having a number one pick, it seemed like we trade
(52:54):
our pick and we fall into fifth place, like y'all
didn't want us to have a top one. They penalized
us for tanking when it was about twelve. Was really
sid like, my people was hurt, they sick, but we
get penalized. I don't know, bring the live ping pongs back?
Like I didn't know they didn't use the ping pong
(53:16):
balls no more where they had the little lottery. Really,
I turned it on yesterday and was so mad when
the man came out and was like, this is such
and such from such and such. She's the only one
that knows what's inside these envelopes and where they are.
I guess for a couple of years it's been no
ping pong. I would and I would have been okay, hell,
(53:36):
we would have got five, six, seven, eight nine with
a ping pong ball.
Speaker 14 (53:41):
But you just bring would have been there. Fairness, it
would have been open because the last two years, I
feel like it's been rigged. All of a sudden, Dallas
trades their their.
Speaker 7 (53:52):
Star Luca, and then they end up with the number
one pick for Cooper Flag. Something don't seem right there,
right right?
Speaker 2 (54:00):
And even if it was computer generated, who programs the computers?
Speaker 7 (54:03):
Yeah, exactly, what are you telling it? So I'm a
little upset at the league. I ain't mad at the Pacers.
Speaker 1 (54:09):
Yeah, well, well they got to work through that. When
the fever came up a little short. We did Saturday.
Speaker 7 (54:16):
They looked really good.
Speaker 2 (54:17):
Played incredible defense because they gave up ninety something over
one hundred I don't even know, but I can say
the same for the other team, for Dallas, because they
gave up the same note it was almost almost a tie,
I don't remember what it was. Both teams scored close
to one hundred points, a.
Speaker 7 (54:36):
Little bit over one hundred, yeah, a little bit o both.
We just had a bad shooting day. Nobody could hit
Kate like I know. At one point I had looked
at the stats up you know that be on the arena,
and we were like six for seventeen and three pointers.
Like somebody's like, well, that's kind of decent. Decent to who.
Speaker 4 (54:52):
Didn't she didn't Caitlyn have to have a back adjustment
or something like that. I read that summer they had
her out of the.
Speaker 2 (54:59):
Game for Yeah, she went to the chunnel and went
part way to the tunnel and then came back.
Speaker 3 (55:03):
They brought her back. She points or something like that.
Speaker 7 (55:07):
She bought out with twenty Her and Page Backer, I
think had the same amount of points.
Speaker 2 (55:11):
I hated to say it swift and don't y'all hurt
me fever fan. I like Page Bakers.
Speaker 1 (55:17):
She is a good player.
Speaker 7 (55:19):
Yeah, me and my dad was talking about that after
the game, Like Page is really nice. It's really really nice.
Speaker 2 (55:25):
She's got a very good game. And uh one that
that rivals Caitlyn's. I mean, well no, because they're.
Speaker 7 (55:33):
Just a better Like inside can drive, She's an overall
all around Caitlyn can shoot. Nobody shoots like Caitlyn. But
I like Page because Page can get you buckets on
the outside. She can drive, you know what I mean.
Like Page is good and she can defend. She got
good D.
Speaker 1 (55:48):
She's got got good D and.
Speaker 2 (55:49):
Just you know, just seems to make decisions beyond her years, wise,
decisions beyond her years on the court. But I was
watching her, I'm like, this girl's pretty. She's pretty darn good.
I see why she was a rookie. We don't get
a lot of Dallas games here as far as whatever.
But good for her, Good for her.
Speaker 1 (56:06):
She that was one.
Speaker 2 (56:08):
But anyway, uh, but we'll get on to uh uh
oh okay, mister Russell, have a quick comment before we
have to go.
Speaker 1 (56:15):
Mister Russell, Hey, hey, you hear me?
Speaker 13 (56:18):
Yes, yes, yes, it doesn't mean the thing that's been
bothering me about.
Speaker 5 (56:26):
The patients.
Speaker 8 (56:27):
How can you have a team that almost won the
whole balla wax last year last season as it I mean,
if it was you know, one, So how.
Speaker 1 (56:44):
Can they go from a thousand to zero in just
one season?
Speaker 8 (56:48):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (56:48):
Okay, that's not even make not even make make twenty games?
Speaker 13 (56:53):
That happened.
Speaker 15 (56:53):
Yeah, yeah, why would they Why would they.
Speaker 9 (56:57):
Fix something that didn't need to be fit?
Speaker 8 (57:00):
I guess it's my question, okay.
Speaker 1 (57:02):
Mister Russell, good question. Yeah, that's a good question.
Speaker 7 (57:04):
Thirty I mean, but when you look at no Tyres,
Tyree's played a big part of that, Like you don't
have him with those twenty points or ten assists. He
made scoring easy for other people when he didn't have
to score. So you missed out on that. The no
Miles Turner And again I'm not a super Miles Turner fan.
When Jay huff Is and Miles Turner, you know what
I mean. And I think that's why they went big
(57:26):
for Zubac. I think Zubac picks up the semi slack
that Miles left us with. But I think he's better defensive,
like in the inside than Miles was. So you know,
I think next season we'll see a complete turnaround. I
got us going to the second round of the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (57:42):
So if you get to see from a vantage point
that none of us fans or an I mean, you're
right there, anything any different that you've seen that you
saw this year from this particular Pacer squad.
Speaker 1 (57:52):
And because you do both and the Fevers, what did
Fever squad?
Speaker 7 (57:56):
I think this year the Pacers were able to let
some younger guys get developed, and I think we'll see
them be the guys we need next year that we
haven't been able to see from them because you had
the Ben Matherens in a way, so you had to
make sure being got playing time, so you didn't see
a lot of the young guys on the bench the
bench get their shine. So I think that's where we're
going to see next year. The Pacers are going to
(58:18):
be a lot differently, where you're going to see those
guys who made a small impact this year, like a
Quinton Jackson who ended up with a guaranteed contract. He
was able to play games and getting get twenty five
one game seventeen, so now you feel like he's more
valuable because he wasn't getting their time last year. He
was playing G League more, you know what I mean.
Even the Ben Shepherd's got more time this year. So
(58:38):
I think we'll see the guys that we didn't get
to see the year before become a part of the
team when we need them to be a part of
the team. I think for the Fever, I think they
did a very great job during free agency, as their
whole team was free agents. I think they did a
very great job this year during free agency building a
better team that gives them a potential. You see, we
had a good playoff run last year until Kelsey locked
(59:00):
up with their legs. But I think this team this year.
They they found people that can compliment. Okay, Kelsey, you
can go get thirty a game, but you also got
this over hered you left. You got this on the
right and if we got to pull you, we got
some people that can hold it down on the bench too.
So I think both teams realize we got stronger everywhere else.
Like Pacers got their five. Their five is nice. The
(59:22):
other seven that's on the bench is gonna be it.
And I think we got money to spend this offseason,
and I think they'll go get one more person that's
a semi star that could come in and help. And
I think the Fever just put together a well team
this year. So I'm very excited to see what they do.
Speaker 1 (59:36):
All right from you, I know, I know because you
see it. You see it all the time. And second
round of at least are you saying at least or
as far as at least.
Speaker 7 (59:46):
I think we'll make it to the second round of
the playoffs next year? For the Pacers, I think they'll go.
I'm not they might make it again to the Eastern
Conference finals. I think they can. But I think this
next two years, I told everybody, even when Tyre's got hurt.
We'll be back in the finals in two years. We
could go back next year because looking at the East
this year, we should we would paying the finals if
(01:00:06):
you ask me looking at the East this year. But
I think next year is gonna be a challenge again.
I think we go to the playoffs. I think we
win the first round, depending on who we play the
second round, that's where we're gonna get our competition. And
again we can definitely win. But I got us in
the championship in two years. The NBA o's is that
for giving us for messing up.
Speaker 3 (01:00:24):
Our draft to totally agree, totally, but.
Speaker 7 (01:00:26):
For y'all giving away our y'all, Oh, what's.
Speaker 2 (01:00:29):
That cash and let's catch Indeed, we'll be right back.
Alice Watson with Indiana Black x BO is up next.
Speaker 10 (01:00:36):

Expo President and CEO Alice Watson.

you're over here, just stop by or I'll come and
get you. Just text me or something.
Speaker 3 (01:02:11):
I can see where we are.
Speaker 2 (01:02:12):
So, yeah, as we were saying, major announcement made last
week a press release, Indiana Black ex Wo announced a
strategic evolution of Circle City Classic.
Speaker 1 (01:02:22):
So can you tell us what that is?
Speaker 5 (01:02:26):
Yeah, so we you know, we have been really looking
at Classic, quite honestly since twenty eighteen, as the attendance
had began to decline and the price of teams was rising.
So this internally wasn't really a new decision. It's been
(01:02:46):
a very thought out decision as to the feasibility of
the existing model. You know, we've actually the Classic here
in Indianapolis was the first in the Midwest and one
of five that is still standing sustainably, and we really
(01:03:07):
try to figure out ways creatively to kind of make
it work with the attendance model that we had. We
know that traditionally the Classic itself over sixty percent sometimes
seventy percent of the attendance, even since its inception has
been due to the alumni base across the country and regionally,
(01:03:30):
and that just wasn't necessary anymore. There's actually twenty seven
classics today based off of you know, the prior history
when there were probably at max ten classics when we
first started, and again five were the relevant and sustainable
classics with over sixty thousand people, and we were one
(01:03:53):
of those, you know, close to at least fifty thousand
in the Hoosier Dome and then the first year in
Lucas Oil almost maxed it out. But really the outcome
of the first feasibility study in twenty eighteen was as
long as you're not losing money, and this is community stakeholders,
(01:04:16):
major sponsors of folks who were in this space for years.
The feedback was, as long as you're not losing money,
it is a giveback to the community. And at that
time we were trending at about twenty thousand people in
twenty eighteen. So for the first time in twenty eighteen,
(01:04:38):
we paid close to a half a million dollars for
two teams, very reputable, legacy, large major teams, and it
was also the first time that we lost money with
Circle City Classic, but we kept pushing forward with Classic
again for the community, and really two things. Number one Classic,
(01:05:03):
the real goal to Classic was to expose HBCUs to
families and students. That was the ultimate goal. That was
the goal in the vision that Reverend Williams had for
Circle City Classic is the exposure of HBCUs. So we
kept pushing forward with it. We did another feasibility study
(01:05:25):
because the cost of the teams was rising astronomically teams today,
those same teams, for instance, if we were to secure
those teams would cost us over a half a million dollars,
close to seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars, and that's
because of our relationship with MIAK and SWAT. Any place
(01:05:48):
else they would be more. And so we really tried
to figure out a way. Let's give ourselves a year
is what the plan was in twenty twenty five to
see if we could drive more attendance, to see if
we could do something different from a market standpoint, to
continue to expose our kids in families to HBCUs. And
(01:06:12):
that was the plan in twenty twenty five. Going into
twenty twenty five, we had another committee which was driven
by our board, which was a Circle City Classic Reimagined Committee,
the bottom fell out. Of course, with DEI, we were
forecasting to lose close to a million dollars, so we
(01:06:34):
really could not with good conscience continue to push. You know,
in twenty twenty five, the attendance with Classic was it
was not three thousand, by the way, it was actually
thirteen thousand. And as you know, if you take the
attendance before the first half, you will get a three
thousand dollars number, because it's all about the bands. So
(01:06:57):
you know, unfortunately that happens. So when the cuts occurred,
and when we saw again the trend of the costs
for HBCUs because also not only were we competing with
for profits and we were competing with cities who quite
frankly pay for the entire tickets, you know, they pay
(01:07:22):
for the schools, they pay everything. We were also starting
to compete with primarily white institutions who were paying HBCUs
a million dollars to play, and so it just really realistically,
we can't keep up. You know, it's obvious that the appetite,
no matter what our community says, we've had the best
(01:07:44):
of the best, and we were still not breaking an
attendance over twenty thousand dollars. So with the hit with Dei,
we had another dynamic that occurred. We offered to take
the health at the end of twenty twenty five because
all indications were is that it would not be a
(01:08:07):
part of summer celebration, and so we took on another
price tag, which frankly, it's exchanging one for the other
because we're forecasting our expenses for the healthfare to facilitate
it to be over a half million dollars. And so
(01:08:28):
we looked at what could we do creatively to still
fulfill our mission, which is to expose our youth to
the possibilities of HBCUs and we said, we will bring
the youth into Lucas Oil stadiums with the HBCU bands.
And that is why the news is the news. It
was very strategic, it was very thought out, and we
(01:08:51):
just think it is the right thing to do. What
we will do in twenty seven if it works out
with the high school, you know, and again we were
not looking to make a whole lot of money off
of this model, but if it works out, we will
continue with that format and we will add HBCU basketball
(01:09:18):
in November of next year.
Speaker 7 (01:09:23):
That's interesting, And I'm glad you spoke. Alex, this be
swift by the way.
Speaker 3 (01:09:26):
How you doing.
Speaker 5 (01:09:27):
I'm good, I'm good.
Speaker 7 (01:09:28):
I'm glad you spoke because I think one thing we
ask the community always wonder is why we don't see
the bigger schools anymore? You know what I mean? And
I'm glad you spoke on the rising costs. And I
guess my thing is to you guys at one question,
I would ask, with these rising costs, how does that
set up work? So say, for instance, just if we
were doing a football team in twenty twenty five, if
(01:09:51):
we wanted a Howard, if we wanted a TSU, if
we wanted a Grambling, do you guys book that in
twenty twenty four? Do these guys require you to book
in twenty twenty one with deposits down? Because the community
is always why they bringing the bigger schools? We're the
bigger schools. We like Central, we like Kentucky, but bring
the big schools back? And I kind of know because
(01:10:12):
I pay attention to see, like, oh, these schools really
cost a lot of money. But is that a thing
where you like, we have to pay them three years
in advance to get on their schedule because they're booking
fast and it just isn't feasible for the company to
dish out this type of money.
Speaker 5 (01:10:26):
No, it the way that it works. We actually start negotiations.
Speaker 6 (01:10:31):
You know.
Speaker 5 (01:10:31):
First of all, there as I said before, there are
a lot of Classics and the HBCUs they only have
a certain amount of games that they can play, and
so we are playing within their schedule, right, so we
are classic is when is within their schedule. So a
lot of times is really contingent on how far in
(01:10:54):
advance that you can get to whether it's an MoU
you know, to hold them to that schedule. And we've
had a great relationship with HBCUs. We don't have to
pay them in advance. We just enter into an MoU agreement.
But the challenge that we have is again we're competing
with other classics who are willing to pay more than
(01:11:19):
what we have in our budget. And so the relationship
that we have with MIAC which is a great relationship
and swack, they will try to help us find a
matchup that fits within the budget. Now, when folks say that,
you know, we haven't had the best of the best,
I kind of take an exception to that because we
(01:11:41):
had we have Batoon and Howards, which I don't know
what your opinions are, but those are two top schools.
And when we had those two top schools, which is
one of the schools where we really had an anteath
and pay more than what we had in our budget traditionally,
it didn't do anything to our attendance. It was a blip.
(01:12:03):
It was probably an additional two thousand people those were alumnied.
Those weren't community Indianapolis people. Now, how do we know that?
It's because we know how many heads that are put
in the bed through Indianapolis. So I'm not just making
this stuff up. We've been trending down on hotel stays
(01:12:24):
for quite some time. So the community, if our community
doesn't attend and buy tickets and quite frankly, our ticket prices.
We've done everything from me, you've seen it.
Speaker 3 (01:12:38):
You guys know it.
Speaker 5 (01:12:41):
Free bogos hey get it. Has done nothing, So it's
not really the teams if you will. Jackson State came
one year. I'm great friends at Jackson State. The ad said, Alice,
we can't do it again. We lost money because they're
willing to do whatever it takes to try to make
it work. What people don't realize is over these years,
(01:13:05):
the bands costs and popularity has exploded. So bands are
now playing in NFL stadiums for NFL games, they're on TV, they're.
Speaker 1 (01:13:17):
On So then when you add international, they're going over stage.
Speaker 5 (01:13:21):
Yeahs, yes, yes, added to the cost of the teams.
And again your price tag for a top tier school
with a good relationship is a half million dollars for
just one school, So you can't so if we don't sell.
(01:13:42):
We had a budget, and I'm fully transparent, we had
a budget for this year. You know, if we would
have pushed forward with this year for seven hundred and
fifty thousand dollars for two schools, that's based off of relationship,
if I could get them right, that it means that
the average ticket price would have to be forty dollars
(01:14:04):
per person, and we would have had to at least
sell thirty five thousand or more tickets. That's to break
even on the schools. That's not even to cover all
of our other costs. And so we were, you know,
we were pushing forward. Let's see if we could get
some funding to get us to that point. Let's figure
(01:14:27):
it out, knowing that maybe, you know, we would have
to put out a pull out of our own pocket
and our own extensive a half a million dollars. But
we don't have that discretionary fund anymore. You know, we
don't have it because we've lost close to a million
dollars off of funding and we now have another responsibility
(01:14:50):
with the healthcare, and we've just decided the healthcare is
much more important been paying for teams in which we
could do something more creatively to achieve the same mission
for the organization which is exposed in HBCUs to our kids.
Speaker 2 (01:15:06):
So, Alice, if not this particular model that you're going
to put into place in twenty twenty six for the
Fall Classic Football, then what if not this model, then
what if this doesn't work, then what well?
Speaker 5 (01:15:21):
We will do basketball irregardless, you know, and we will
still do all of our activations. What our hope is
is that we can do both. And the reason why
we want to do both and we want to do
some sort of activation is because our people don't go
to parades in the cold weather. So you know, we
(01:15:42):
will still all of our activations are the same. Nothing
changes in September other than the fact that we will
have high school football. So when you really look at it,
there's still the parade, there's still the FanFest, tailgate, steel,
the PEP Rally, there's still our Education Day, which is
(01:16:04):
our college Career Fair, which is continuing to grow and
grow and grow in which we expose our kids to
HBCU recruiters and recruiters across the state of Indiana. So
we're really not changing our model. We're changing the teams.
We've just are trading you know, HBCU football for high
(01:16:25):
school kids, and quite frankly, the schools are very excited.
You know, you have some kids who may not ever
make it on the field at Lucas Old Stadium in
their football uniforms, so it gives us an opportunity to
get more kids in the stadium to do the same things.
We'll still have our coaches launching, so nothing really changes
(01:16:48):
in the month of September, and we'll continue to push
forward with that. You know, if it makes sense, and
I think it will make sense because the price tag
is a little bit less.
Speaker 1 (01:17:00):
What will that will that be? I'm sorry, if you're
thinking right now, what would the cost of the football
game be? And with the flag, the flag foot flag football.
Speaker 7 (01:17:10):
Start it off in the morning, correctly, Yes, so we will.
Speaker 5 (01:17:13):
Have flag football. We'll have uh, you know, we kick
off with gross flag football. Then we will have a
high school matchup. And after the first high school matchup,
we will have the Battle of the Band, so we'll
have three bands, Talladega, Kentucky and Mouth College. And then
we will have another boys of football game. So we
(01:17:36):
we finish up at nine or nine point thirty with
all day activations and of course we will have things
inside the stadium like we normally do.
Speaker 2 (01:17:45):
So the theme, I guess the focus is going to
remain hbc So it'll remain HBCU focused, but just with
the local flair with HBCU.
Speaker 1 (01:17:57):
Elements added in.
Speaker 5 (01:17:59):
I guess y, yeah, yeah, I mean you still have
the HBCU bands. And quite honestly, the HBCU bands is
usually where everyone sits in their seats and attends.
Speaker 6 (01:18:11):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (01:18:12):
So you still have HBCU bands. And I will tell
you that HBCU bands are the heaviest in recruiting students.
They come in early, They've always done it historically. They've
they come in and they will visit a school and
they will recruit Uh. So they quite honestly, they don't
have to visit the schools. The schools will be in
(01:18:34):
the building, uh because usually they do a performance at
a school as part of their recruitment. So you still
have HBCUs. We will still have our talent edy career
Fair which we had started. This would be the third
year in which we you know, we usually have the
football teams go through and they go through when we
(01:18:58):
have our partners who are recruiting. JD Finnishline has been
very successful. They've recruited over one hundred kids because they
have a regional presence, you know in some of the
places where the schools are. So instead of the football teams,
how great it is. Now we'll have the bands who
(01:19:19):
would go through the recruitment process and now you have
young lady and young men who actually and the bands
are you know, where you had eighty students from each
team with the total one hundred and sixty, you have
bands who are over one hundred and seventy members strong
to go into.
Speaker 3 (01:19:40):
The career fair.
Speaker 8 (01:19:41):
So so really.
Speaker 5 (01:19:43):
It's just a change in the dynamics of HBCU presence.
Speaker 2 (01:19:49):
So Alice, the price points, I didn't follow up on that,
I'm sorry. The price points for the game, the activations
at the at the rc good lord.
Speaker 1 (01:19:59):
Looks somebody said, Lucas, Lucas, you know what.
Speaker 2 (01:20:02):
I was just telling Eric that somebody was telling me
about the RCAA Dome and they were talking about the
Hoosier Dogs, and I said, I hope to goodness, I
don't say that, but at the stadium the stadium, So
what what will a ticket include? And will the price
points remain fairly the same and fairly as competitive as
they have been in in years past for the college football?
Speaker 5 (01:20:26):
Yeah, I mean we'll start at twenty dollars. Okay, you know,
we'll have a twenty dollars ticket. I think it's either
twenty thirty in fifty or twenty thirty forty and fifty.
But it doesn't change because you get all day activation.
Speaker 2 (01:20:42):
I was going to say, do you get all like
the flag and the everything? So the other thing, how
do how do you determine who gets to play? Is
it just random? And are all the schools going to
be from the Indianapolis area, you know, city and township
schools or are you looking to expand out?
Speaker 5 (01:21:01):
We're hoping to expand you know, this was a this
was a quick pivot because we again we kind of
twenty twenty five, as you know, it was a very
interesting year.
Speaker 1 (01:21:12):
For a lot of non products.
Speaker 5 (01:21:13):
Yeah, so we didn't have an opportunity to really work
with is h AA. We basically we looked at the
existing calendar of schools and we went with that model.
But hopefully, you know, as we look at the future,
we can work with i H A a of scheduling
(01:21:35):
and talk to U you know, the schools, so that
it's a it's a statewide initiative. We were intentional and
that we you know, we brought an I P s
U where we could with a matchup that we we felt,
you know, again was compelling, and that that was the
Girls with Addicts and uh Arsenal Tech because of the history. Right. So,
(01:21:59):
but the other schools, we looked at schools who who
really are strong on the football side, they have a
strong you know, fan base, student fan base, and we
put those schools. We tried to do schools that were
you know, I mean, I mean, this is the reality
that was somewhat predominantly black schools and so that's that's
(01:22:24):
kind of how we picked them. They were their existing matchups.
Home teams, we bought out their ticket block because we
knew that they you know, that's a home game, so
that's a big game for them. So we you know,
we compensated them for going into Lucas Oil. So there
was kind of you know, it's kind of a quick thing.
(01:22:46):
It is worked out for. So there's some great matchups. Again,
we looked at the matchups and that's how we picked
them this year.
Speaker 1 (01:22:54):
So you know, I'll go ahead.
Speaker 7 (01:22:56):
So I'll go ahead and be the elephant in the
room with this next question. I guess you got these
high school students and of course you know the adults
are like, oh my stars, you got five high schools
coming downtown Indianapolis when down at town Indianapolis is trying
to push the kids out. How do we make this
environment fun and make it safe. So because again that's
(01:23:18):
what they're going to say, that's what the adults is
going to scream on Facebook.
Speaker 3 (01:23:21):
Oh I don't want to go.
Speaker 7 (01:23:22):
These kids are crazy, they're bad.
Speaker 3 (01:23:24):
And they're not.
Speaker 7 (01:23:26):
We hate that they're saying that, right that these kids
go somewhere have fun and enjoy and how do we
prepare ourselves for what is what are you guys.
Speaker 3 (01:23:35):
Doing to.
Speaker 5 (01:23:38):
It's funny because I've I've not been sleeping, you know,
because this is a totally different model for us, as
you know, and it's a scary one. But what we
plan on doing is having conversations with the schools because
it's it's an opportunity to show the community something different
than what they expect, you know. So we are you know,
(01:24:02):
we're very cognizant of that and that that expectation and
that reputation of kids. But all kids aren't bad kids, agreed,
you know? Or right? So you know, we we catered
the kids we want kids. We have twenty five hundred
kids who come into Losis Oil Stadium for the Education
(01:24:25):
Day College for twenty five hundred and it keeps growing.
Never had a problem with those kids, never, you know.
My big concern is and it's the same concern that
we we have with HBCUs. And sometimes we've had matchups
and I believe it was North Carolina Central and I
can't remember, maybe Mississippi Valley. They're a big rivalry and
(01:24:51):
I'm forgive me if I it's the wrong matchup. They
had extra security. So it happens everywhere. So we will
if it's two schools that are known for being, you know,
a huge rivalry, we'll add to mextra security because that's
just football that happens with the big ones. You know,
that happens at the professional level. So we're prayful that
(01:25:16):
everyone will conduct themselves improve everyone else wrong. We cater
to youth, That's that's part of our mission in our program,
youth who want to look at other post secondary opportunities.
You know, parents will be there. So I'm hoping that
we will conduct ourselves the way that we know we
(01:25:38):
can conduct ourselves.
Speaker 2 (01:25:39):
You know, Alice, The other semi interesting elephant in the
room question is that we know and we've heard conversations.
In the interest of full disclosure, we've had conversations. I've
heard conversations with people that have said, Hey, with attendance declining,
interest waning, going back.
Speaker 1 (01:25:56):
And forth, why not just make this high school?
Speaker 2 (01:25:58):
Why not just make it local and just use the
teams here, either local high school or local college teams
or what have you.
Speaker 1 (01:26:05):
Why not make that a local thing. And you know,
we've been hearing that for year. I've swift and I
took for years. We've been hearing that.
Speaker 2 (01:26:13):
Possibility that that I don't know, observation, criticism, whatever, however.
Speaker 1 (01:26:18):
You want to put it.
Speaker 2 (01:26:19):
And it's interesting that now now that the decision has
been made to do to do that, there comes concern that, well,
what are you gonna do with all these kids, Like
all of five hundred or six hundred kids are going
to be out there starting trouble.
Speaker 1 (01:26:32):
No, it's generally not, uh, you know, most of them
want to have something to do.
Speaker 2 (01:26:37):
Most of them want something fun that's about them, you know,
that that they can relate to.
Speaker 1 (01:26:42):
And so I just I just find it interesting that
the two schools of.
Speaker 2 (01:26:46):
Thought are clashing a bit because we had, you know,
when we heard about it last week, we had callers
say that it's fantastic because it's going to give the
kids something to do, and then had another caller say, yeah,
well y'all going to do with all those kids downtown
at one point in time.
Speaker 1 (01:27:03):
So it's an interesting dichotomy.
Speaker 7 (01:27:04):
And I think for me too, right, but not to
cut you off, Alice, seeing that this game is over
at nine nine thirty. These people don't put this stupid
curfew at nine o'clock. Excuse me for my language, but
do we sure these babies are okay, because I am
PD nothing against y'all. But now y'all got this. The
city councilor and gave is reduced curfew at.
Speaker 1 (01:27:24):
Well just the summer. No, no, no, that's is summer.
Speaker 2 (01:27:26):
The month's only so by the time that the yeah problem,
that should not be an issue. Okay, we can last
the council unless the council does something. Alice, you may
know more than we do, but my understanding was it
was to end at the end of August.
Speaker 1 (01:27:42):
Or first to September.
Speaker 5 (01:27:43):
I thought it was a summer.
Speaker 1 (01:27:44):
Ye, summer's temporary.
Speaker 7 (01:27:45):
I was just thinking, like, this is tricky.
Speaker 5 (01:27:49):
We do have a relationship and a partnership with the city,
so we will sit down and go through all of
this with them. As a matter of fact, you just
triggered that we really need to get.
Speaker 2 (01:28:01):
With them and have the There still be a curfew though, yeah, yeah,
regardless whether it's they whether it's tightened up or not.
I have a caller that has a question, Kevin, go ahead,
how are you?
Speaker 1 (01:28:15):
Kevin? Are you there?
Speaker 8 (01:28:17):
Yep?
Speaker 12 (01:28:17):
Are you doing good?
Speaker 1 (01:28:18):
Good? Good? How are you.
Speaker 5 (01:28:20):
Hey?
Speaker 9 (01:28:21):
That was an excellent question. We swear this is Kard
Griffin down the other side of you. Hey man, uh,
let's start now. I can probably guarantee at least ten
guys for my organization to come out and help and
police downtown. You know, get some dash down there, put
this in some fast, put us in some volunteer T shirts.
I think if we start now, we can probably get
at least one hundred, maybe two hundred guys. You get
(01:28:41):
a lot of guys called this radio station, them tips
and guys of that nature that can get some manpower
down there. Let's start now. Let's just have some kind
of meeting with a bunch of organizations.
Speaker 8 (01:28:52):
See when you get two.
Speaker 9 (01:28:53):
Or three, maybe four hundred dads down there and kind
of police the young kids down there.
Speaker 5 (01:28:57):
Oh that's a great idea.
Speaker 7 (01:28:59):
No, I think there's open again. I think that's needed.
And again nothing to my IMPD friends that are listening
to me. That's gonna text and common phone later. But
I think it looks better, you know what I'm saying.
I think it helps, and we help us, We help us,
you know what I mean. And I know I MPD
are there to help too. But sometimes you can get
frustrated because a team might not listen to do what
you want to do because of the tone in your voice,
and you gotta somebody that looks like us, it looks
(01:29:21):
like them, that can help steer them that way. So
I'm glad you called with that suggestion, kiv yep.
Speaker 3 (01:29:26):
And then you think about it.
Speaker 9 (01:29:27):
Nine times out of ten, somebody, if we get two
or three hundred guys out there, if we get seventy
five guys out there, we're gonna know some of them kids.
The kids are gonna be our kids. Like you said,
they look at the uniform and look at the gun,
look at the badge, and they kind of want to
buff that. But to be honest, if we where we
need to be, we shouldn't even need IMPD to police
our kids. That should be something we should be doing,
police our kids.
Speaker 5 (01:29:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:29:51):
Yeah, So this is this is it, Alice, This is uh,
this is the new the new game in town, so
to speak, the new game in town.
Speaker 5 (01:30:01):
This is it?
Speaker 1 (01:30:02):
Yes, yeah, Swift and Eric Swift any other Eric's answer. So,
I yeah, I you know, it's just it's just so
interesting to me. I mean, I get where.
Speaker 2 (01:30:14):
You're coming, right, and I'm like, I'm like, Swift, I
appreciate the disclosure of the finances, you know, the decisions
that are based on game.
Speaker 7 (01:30:22):
Yeah, because we I think the community has talked about it,
and you don't know, because it's something that's being kept
quiet of why don't they bring this school?
Speaker 3 (01:30:29):
We don't know.
Speaker 7 (01:30:29):
There are half a million dollars. It's never been told.
Speaker 1 (01:30:32):
And that's just for one squo.
Speaker 5 (01:30:34):
I'll tell you swift. We were We did the tailgate
in twenty twenty four in South Bend, right, So we're there,
we're tailgating, we're having you know, we're trying to tell
our game. And it was the Tennessee State alumnis and
they all came by our tailgate and they're like, why
(01:30:56):
haven't you brought us back to Indianapolis? You know, we
want to come back to Inaplis. And I said to them,
we can't afford you. You know, we cannot afford you,
and we can't. And again, Tennessee State was getting a
million dollars. They lost badly, but you know, I mean,
HBCUs have to do what they have to do. They
(01:31:18):
have tos just like we do. Uh, and we just
can't as a nonprofit. We can't compete with the PWIS
and some of the other for profit marketing promoters who
are really kind of facilitating some of these classes.
Speaker 2 (01:31:36):
Yeah yeah, find to be responsible, yeah yeah, and physically
responsible money is easy.
Speaker 6 (01:31:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (01:31:42):
And when you say they've cut the EI, we've lost
my goods, that shakes the table, like you know, and
I'm sure that hurts you when from the top of
the bottom and the U I cut and what's going
on in certain buildings around here when it comes to
that and support, I'm sure that hurts.
Speaker 11 (01:31:59):
Yeah, it does.
Speaker 1 (01:32:01):
Let's take one more question, Lisa, go ahead, you have
a question.
Speaker 15 (01:32:05):
Well I kind of had a comment and a question
if they would possibly also add.
Speaker 8 (01:32:11):
Some moms in there with the dads, well.
Speaker 15 (01:32:18):
Sponsorship to sponsor stipen or something for those moms and
dad and maybe also a happy thing going on with
parents parent children type of things, parent team, maybe a game,
a basketball game, parents against teens or something, you know,
(01:32:39):
add something like that in there to have more parents
and they as well, because sometimes we don't want.
Speaker 8 (01:32:46):
To be around them and they don't want to.
Speaker 15 (01:32:48):
Be maybe they might want to interact, you know, I
know I enjoy interacting with my son on we did
like a parent against the and it was kind of
fun in the park and we don't mess up they
little thing for manybody. They you know, they let us
have a little fun out there with they want to
(01:33:09):
play ball.
Speaker 8 (01:33:10):
So I get it.
Speaker 15 (01:33:13):
Maybe some sponsorship that that can pay Stipe into parents
be out there.
Speaker 1 (01:33:20):
Thank you Li.
Speaker 2 (01:33:21):
So that's a great and you know, Alice, a sponsorship
is is another semi elephant in the room because a
lot of these sponsors they're getting pressure regarding their ro
ois and fear of losing certain funds if they go
too far one way, or you know, it's just a
it's a difficult it's a difficult balance to strike in
(01:33:42):
a lot of ways, especially when it comes to sponsorship.
But I think the sponsorship is a great idea because
there's somebody out there in the community that wants to
to do you know, do some good and and make
sure everybody has a nice time.
Speaker 1 (01:33:55):
So maybe, you know, maybe a sponsor or two will
come forth swift.
Speaker 3 (01:33:59):
I think.
Speaker 7 (01:33:59):
So I ask a question because I know we canna
wrap up sooner than later. I know you you did
a community conversation on Saturday this past weekend, and there
were people that couldn't make it. There's probably people that's
not listening to this. Are you gonna do more of
those conversations? Are you willing to come to Hot and
talk to me and a Cameron about this? Because again,
this is a conversation that's happening in so many people
(01:34:20):
are missing it or so many people got input or questions.
So you know, I don't want to call it your
media tour, but are you gonna do that again out
there at the export office? Are you willing to come
and make a phone call to Hot and we can
have this same confirmation one afternoon or whether it's with
Cam Riddle and his show on a Sunday morning, because
people want to know. And I think now that I'm
(01:34:40):
hearing it from my angle and it's like, okay, that
makes a lot of sense on why.
Speaker 2 (01:34:43):
We're completely completely different audiences, completely different time slots.
Speaker 1 (01:34:47):
So I get here you very good points with yeah,
very good.
Speaker 5 (01:34:50):
I mean absolutely. I will tell you that the open
house and the conversation was recorded. You'll see that probably
by the end of the week.
Speaker 8 (01:35:04):
You know.
Speaker 5 (01:35:04):
I did something also on IBJ because they they released
before they were supposed to on a podcast.
Speaker 8 (01:35:13):
Mistake, you know.
Speaker 5 (01:35:15):
But yeah, I'm willing to absolutely talk about it. I
do want to say, let's not forget. We got another
little event that's about what happened celebration in which we
will be making our announcements for the rest of our
entertainment and celebrities on that here in the coming weeks.
(01:35:35):
But I'm very open to the conversation. You know. The
one thing that I will want to say is it
really was time for us to tell our own story.
Speaker 8 (01:35:46):
You know, we are a.
Speaker 5 (01:35:49):
Organization we do much more than Summer Celebration and Circle
City Classic, which is why we did the open house
so that that folks could see that we have a
program and it's how good towards youth. You know, we
do do our Black Business Training Institute, which is a
big thing for us, but a lot of our programming
is youth and family focus. You know, we've got this
(01:36:11):
healthfare to talk about again. That's four thousand thouars worth
of free services that need to happen in this climate.
It can't go away. It's more needed than ever before.
So a lot to talk about. If there's a lot
of just unnecessary noise, and I would say, we got
to do a better job people for our people. You know,
(01:36:34):
we're turned each other down and it's not a good thing.
And it's like, we don't have to worry about anyone
else doing it. We do it ourselves. So I've made
a commitment that we'll get out and we'll tell our
own story.
Speaker 7 (01:36:47):
I love that and I appreciate you being that person
to come and tell the story because I think for
many years it was a closed door that we couldn't
get inside. So to hear finally, I think that that
changes my mind on what's going on on him. I
might still have some questions, but to get a small
piece of transparency, transparency means a lot.
Speaker 1 (01:37:06):
Yeah, knowing, knowing where it's going.
Speaker 2 (01:37:08):
So all right, well, thank you Alice, you appreciate it,
and hey, keep us posted.
Speaker 1 (01:37:13):
Thank you guys for having me, Thank you for your time,
and we'll be back with more.
Speaker 2 (01:37:17):
Thank you, Swift, no problem, you know you got a
show to get to do. Alrighty, we'll be right back
close things out right after this.
Speaker 10 (01:37:32):
Let's get back to the conversation. It's community Connection with
Tina Cosby, brought to you by Child Advocates, a champion
for justice, opportunity and well being for children on Praise
Am thirteen ten ninety five point one FM.
Speaker 1 (01:37:48):
And we are back with community connection.
Speaker 8 (01:37:50):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (01:37:52):
I enjoyed that segment.
Speaker 3 (01:37:53):
Third two, that's very good news. That is so good.
Speaker 2 (01:37:56):
So probably makes sense Swift And I'm lad Swift was
able to sit in because he's walking right to his
show which starts at three o'clock, so be sure and
check him out. Point nine And yeah, Yeah, it's it's
all about finances and and and keeping the presence the
(01:38:17):
HBCU experience going and doing what we can do locally.
I think giving these youngsters and the community something to do,
because it won't be just kids coming. I mean your
parents are going to go, and they will family members
and those who don't ever get a chance to play
in a dome, a professional dome stadium we're even in
(01:38:37):
or one time.
Speaker 3 (01:38:39):
Nice experience should be nice.
Speaker 5 (01:38:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:38:42):
Yeah, so I'm really I'm really excited for that that's
coming up in the fall. And as Alice said, though,
we've uh summer.
Speaker 1 (01:38:50):
Celebration celebrations coming up coming up before that. Yeah, so
that that'll be here a lot to look forward to.
Speaker 2 (01:38:57):
Yeah, But that that announcement was important and her explaining
and she said in the interesting yes, it was very important,
and she you know, is going to be on Swift show.
Cameron's on Sunday at some point in time whenever they
get her scheduled, and I think she'll she'll do the
same thing, so we think.
Speaker 4 (01:39:14):
So we had a chance to hear the breakdown the cost.
It's like that's something I never knew. I knew there
was cost, I had no idea how much did cost?
Speaker 1 (01:39:22):
Yeah, pretty much?
Speaker 2 (01:39:23):
And then to get on the schedule exactly, get on
the schedule because these these schools.
Speaker 1 (01:39:27):
And bands, mainly the band.
Speaker 2 (01:39:28):
The bands are in high demand, and and like I said,
even internationally because they some of these these kids go overseas.
Speaker 4 (01:39:37):
I've heard some people in the past say they thought
it was free for the bands and all, you know,
the schools didn't cost Yeah, it just cost nothing.
Speaker 1 (01:39:46):
It costs money, Yeah I did did.
Speaker 2 (01:39:49):
I think this was probably happened to most parents when
you when your kids are little and there, Oh can
I have so and so?
Speaker 1 (01:39:55):
Or can we go over there? I don't have any
cash on me right now.
Speaker 2 (01:39:57):
Well, there's some money in that machine right there, just
out of the machine. I'm not.
Speaker 6 (01:40:04):
I'm not.
Speaker 1 (01:40:07):
Push the buttons. I have no cash right now and
I'm not going to get it again.
Speaker 2 (01:40:10):
So but no, but yeah, sometimes people act like that
and and and honestly, I think our organizations, our events
and activities are under assault because of the state wide
and nationwide attack and all out war on de I
and anything that that that looks.
Speaker 1 (01:40:30):
And smells like DEI. Yeah, why does it have to
be a black college? Well, because y'all wouldn't let us
go to the other That's a reason why.
Speaker 3 (01:40:37):
That's the whole reason. All they need to do is
look at the history. It's all there. I know, it's there.
Speaker 2 (01:40:44):
So short sighted, just like the Supreme Court saying there's
no more racism. Yeah, can discriminate, can discriminate on the
basis of color because that no longer exists.
Speaker 1 (01:40:53):
Dream on, yep, yep, dream on.
Speaker 3 (01:40:57):
So it would be nice if that were true, but
it's not.
Speaker 1 (01:41:00):
Yeah, I don't even know you caught your lips to
say that. Anyhow.
Speaker 2 (01:41:05):
Something kind of funny though, Eric, I have to remember
when we had a funny conversation that we got about
a minute or two before we have to get out
of here, about the cost of a plate of ribs.
Speaker 3 (01:41:17):
Oh, yeah, I remember that conversation. Yeah, exactly exactly that much.
Speaker 1 (01:41:23):
Well, it just so happened.
Speaker 2 (01:41:25):
I was coming back from a doctor's appointment and it
was what it was on the south side, and I
had to stop at a gas station and this guy
comes out and as I saw his business, his business
was attached as a beautiful business, I mean clean, neat,
brand new stuff, and everything looked like he had just started.
He said he'd been in business about seven or eight years,
maybe ten, I don't want anyway, it was ten or under.
Speaker 1 (01:41:48):
And he said, and I.
Speaker 2 (01:41:49):
Want you to come, and I want you I do catering,
I do this, and we have lunch. We're not open
just yet because my appointment was early in the morning,
he said. But and he gave the menu, so, uh,
there was there was a question about what a plate
of ribs would cost.
Speaker 1 (01:42:04):
Oh you got the menu are.
Speaker 3 (01:42:06):
I'm looking at it right here? Twenty seven dollars. Twenty
seven dollars.
Speaker 4 (01:42:13):
Uh huh for plate of ribs. Yeah, yeah, Now you
want sides, you can add some more to that.
Speaker 2 (01:42:22):
Both sides are included with the twenty seventh, with the
twenty full rack, one rack full, one plate, one plate,
and they'll throw in not one.
Speaker 3 (01:42:29):
But two suicides. That's twenty seventy dollars and someone said that's.
Speaker 2 (01:42:34):
Somebody said, twenty dollars was really ridiculous. Yeah, exactly, it
was ridiculous for a plate of rib.
Speaker 3 (01:42:39):
Twenty years ago maybe, But now, no, twenty seven, you
get a full rack.
Speaker 1 (01:42:43):
Yeah, and I'm not making we're not making fun of these,
you know, we're not. We're not screaming on the guy.
Speaker 2 (01:42:47):
But no, we will say that we have it on
good authority and in our very hands right here, the
menu right here, and I stop and talk to the
guy and let me let me add this.
Speaker 1 (01:42:59):
I could believe how cheap those prices were compared to what.
Speaker 2 (01:43:03):
Compared to some of the other places around. Rack of
ribs might cost you thirty thirty five to thirty five.
This is a rack, a full rack, twenty seven and.
Speaker 3 (01:43:11):
Two suicides, so you can get it.
Speaker 1 (01:43:14):
But it is more than twenty dollars.
Speaker 3 (01:43:15):
It's not twenty bucks anymore.
Speaker 1 (01:43:17):
So we weren't imagining things, not at all.
Speaker 4 (01:43:20):
Yeah, again, twenty years ago, maybe even fifteen, maybe ten,
you know you could get that for twenty.
Speaker 2 (01:43:28):
People will still buy a whole cows and chickens, I
mean not chickens.
Speaker 1 (01:43:34):
Chicken would be coming.
Speaker 2 (01:43:35):
Remember, well, back in the day, folks used to buy
cows and they'd buy a p by the whole thing.
Speaker 4 (01:43:40):
I knew somebody was a kid growing up, a man
who had his own he built his own refrigerated Oh,
he did garage, and he had meat that was hanging
there that he he did himself.
Speaker 3 (01:43:52):
He dressed and everything.
Speaker 1 (01:43:54):
Oh wow. And you know, my parents used to split.
Speaker 2 (01:43:59):
I guess it would be a cow or and then
there would be these meat packages and it would be
my uh, my mother and father, and then my aunt
and uncle, you know, their siblings.
Speaker 8 (01:44:09):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:44:10):
And both of them had families of five.
Speaker 8 (01:44:13):
Oh.
Speaker 2 (01:44:13):
My aunt and uncle had five kids, and my parents
we had five. And they were like these kids, he
knows our house at home.
Speaker 1 (01:44:18):
We won't get we won't get.
Speaker 8 (01:44:19):
Us a cow.
Speaker 5 (01:44:21):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (01:44:21):
And And they would do that a couple of years.
Speaker 2 (01:44:23):
In a row, and they split the cost because one hole,
I mean, you'd be amazed at how much food is
in one And in these packages they would throw in
chickens and exactly, and you could you could determine how
you wanted your meat.
Speaker 1 (01:44:35):
And I was just wondering if family still did that.
Speaker 3 (01:44:37):
That's a good question. I don't know. I don't know
if anybody who.
Speaker 1 (01:44:40):
Does well, their families aren't as large as our as well.
Speaker 3 (01:44:42):
Well, that's true, that's true families, and the cost is
going to be even more.
Speaker 7 (01:44:47):
Now maybe I would.
Speaker 1 (01:44:48):
Think, maybe maybe we find your guy out there, and well, yeah, baby.
Speaker 3 (01:44:52):
He's out there somewhere still doing this.
Speaker 8 (01:44:55):
You know.
Speaker 2 (01:44:55):
James James talks about a guy or an area where
he and his wife drive to on weekends and they
can get meat, vegetables and all. It sounds like it's
somewhere out the Remind me or we can remind each
other to ask him about that, because he said he
would go out there and buy and stock up for
(01:45:17):
you know, a season or two because it was so
cheap and because it was fresh.
Speaker 3 (01:45:21):
Yeah, that's what you.
Speaker 4 (01:45:22):
Want, the fresh shot. Because we've gone to a butcher
shop to get certain things. Oh yeah, okay, and it
can be a little expensive, but you see it's fresh.
Sh it's it's right there.
Speaker 3 (01:45:33):
It's yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:45:33):
They some of those packages includes fish.
Speaker 4 (01:45:36):
You get fish and if you want something else, you
get that. And so we've done that a few times
in a gift card for that and that's one of
the reasons we went.
Speaker 3 (01:45:47):
Because we walked in we saw the price. It's like, yeah, okay,
car is nice.
Speaker 1 (01:45:53):
Yes, yes it does, yes, it does so well.
Speaker 2 (01:45:58):
That is about all the time we have for right now. Eric,
