Em publicação na Truth Social neste domingo, ele justificou a medida dizendo que o presidente colombiano, Gustavo Petro, “é um líder de drogas ilegais que incentiva fortemente a produção maciça de drogas”. No sábado, Petro acusou os Estados Unidos de violarem a soberania
colombiana e de matarem um pecador durante operações militares americanas contra o narcotráfico no Mar do Caribe. Segundo ele, o colombiano Alejandro Carranza morreu em um dos ataques realizados por forças americanas que, desde agosto, têm concentrado ações na Venezuela e em áreas próximas às águas territoriais da Colômbia sob a alegação, ainda sem provas, de atingir supostos traficantes. Em entrevista à Rádio Eldorado, Carolina Silva Pedroso, professora de Relações Internacionais da Universidade Federal de São Paulo (Unifesp), disse que os objetivos de Trump parecem mais estratégicos e relacionados ao petróleo venezuelano, já que o Mar do Caribe “não é uma região prioritária” do narcotráfico para os Estados Unidos.
