McAulay Minute- Inner-Directed Life

William James, the father of American psychology, articulated the essential inner life a bit less succinctly when he said, “The greatest revolution of our generation is the discovery that human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives.”

At Life University, we’re still part of that revolution, providing our students with the sure knowledge that their inner-directed lives have everything to do with the way their lives and careers will unfold.

One of the most impactful aspects of Life. University's perspective
of health is actually one of the most recently articulated,
and I think it's also one of the most important.
In 2017, Life University added a phrase to the original
value statement of lasting purpose, and that is to live

an inner directed life. And the rest of it is,
it's always been to give, do love, serve from a
sense of one's own abundance. It's a huge idea to
be articulated in so few words. William James, the father

say living an inner directed life is easy. It can
be difficult and stressful to go up against the status
quo and even our own self-limiting thoughts. But James also
said the greatest weapon against stress is our ability to
choose one thought over another. Living an inner directed life, then,

requires choosing each next thought and action that is most
consistent with one's own values, such as the generosity, excellence, compassion,
and service that guides us here at Life University.
