Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to a very special episode of Till Talk, the
official Jackson Vidjangers podcast here in the UK and Island.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
I'm Jay Lawrence.
Speaker 1 (00:07):
No relation, he's not here because I'm on radio row
at Super Bowl fifty nine in New Orleans. So many
people the NFL great, the NFL good around here, and
that includes somebody who deserves a big congratulations, Tony Boselli
for getting a brand new job with the Jags, the
executive vice president of football Operations. So I sat down
(00:31):
with him wisdom, congratulations and spoke about the new head coach,
Liam Cohen, the GM search, and.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
So much more.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
Tony Biselli, Welcome to Till Talk back on the Jags pod.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Yeah, here we go.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Okay, And the first thing I've got to say is
our congratulations.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
Thank you very much. And it's great. It's a huge honor.
I mean just I love the organization and I've had
a bunch of different roles in it, and it's gonna
be a lot of funded about Liam Cohen and we're
gonna get it kicking off the GM search here. And
the fact that Sead trusted me and gave me this opportunity,
(01:09):
I just can't thank him enough. And I'm excited. We've
already got to work and Uh, I'm ready to go
approve to him that it was he made the right choice.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
Well, tell us a little bit about your role and
what you're going to be overseeing within the organization.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
Yeah, So the way were acept organization is head coach.
We've got Liam, he's in report to Shot, all report
to Shot, and our GM report to Sean. Our GM
will be overall the draft, all player procurement and you know,
so draft free agency, you know, and then trades and
then UH and player disposable you know, how we trade,
how we trade a player if we have to cut
(01:41):
a player. Liam, I think that's pretty easy. He's the
head coach, he's the ball coach. And then all the
operations and supporting UH departments that are supporting the head coach,
the equipment, medical, video, all the analytics. All that is
gonna report up to me. But really our job is
to support the head coach and the GM to make
(02:02):
sure that they can do their jobs, because what's most
important is what happens on the field.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
Well, I want to get into the GM star. I
just want to get into obviously Liam Cohen being the
new head coach of the Jacks. But you know, very quickly,
I want to know how like you feel because within
the Jacks organization, within you know, your career with the
jack Us, it is fair to say you've done quite
a lot.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
This is a new role for you. Have you been
itching to get there?
Speaker 3 (02:26):
I think I don't know if I've been itching to
get to this role specifically, I've been itching to be
as involved as I can. I love the play so
like I played. Listen, I've I've been a player and
I've been I've done stuff on the business side with
Mark Lamping, our president. Him and his team has been awesome.
They're awesome to work with, probably the best in the
NFL if you look at it. I've done the radio,
(02:48):
done stuff with you guys, and uh, all of it's
been great. And uh, but I wanted to I wanted
to always try to do more. And really my heart
is to do whatever I can to help this organization
of six and so when Sean gave me this opportunity,
I was like, yes, I want to do it, and
so I'm super excited and it's been great. It's only
(03:11):
been you know, this is first week that officially, you know,
we worked all ever since we've hired Liam and the
press conference been working with him and his team as
we try to help him build the staff. And I
think when we announced the staff, I think people are
gonna be really, really excited. I mean, it's a a
plus staff that Liam's done, which is hard to do
because you sometimes you can't get everyone you want because
(03:32):
of contracts and everything else. And I've been super impressed
with Liam and his dedication is work ethic and what
He's just hit the ground running, did not you know,
there was no celebration, you know, let's go celebrate, you know,
getting the big contract and getting the head job. I mean,
moment he got hired, he went to work and we've
(03:53):
been working together and so I'm it's it's gonna be great.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
Well, we'll talk about Liam Cohen then obviously the new
coach the Jacksonville Jaguars. What do you think is the
most exciting thing about on new head coach for jackson fans?
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Well, I think you're gonna you're gonna love his offense.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
You're to love the bus one of the most exciting
in the league.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
You're gonna love his offense. And I mean they were
top five in both running pass and he did that
with his two best receivers, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin
being out for a better part of the year. I mean,
he's impressive, and he knows how to coach. He can
coach ball. And I think what you're gonna be even
more excited about once you get to know him and
you see him operate. He's a he's a leader, and
(04:37):
so yeah, he's a great ball coach. But he's gonna
lead that staff, he's gonna lead our building, he's gonna
set the culture. He has a very clear and concise
vision for what he wants it to look like. And
he's been around great organizations, great head coaches, so he's
been influenced by all of them, and he's gonna bring
all that to jackson And I think, listen, Ultimately, what
(04:59):
I want to make sure happens is that we're excited
this time next year because we gotta win ball games.
We need to win our division, we need to get
in the playoffs, we need to win playoff games. And ultimately,
what we need to do is bring a Littlebardi Trophy
back to Jacksonville. And I think, you know, and that's
a process and we gotta it's step by step and
you gotta get the process right. You gotta focus on
(05:20):
the process and not so much the outcome right away.
But that's what we're gonna that's what our fans want,
that's what we'll be judged by and evaluated by it
from Shot and our fans and everybody else. And so
that's I want to It's exciting right now. It's gonna
be a great offseason. Our fans are gonna love it.
We gotta go through free agency and get that right.
We gotta get the draft right, we gotta get OTA's
(05:41):
and all those steps right so that when we kick
it off in September this year, you know, we go
win a bunch of ball games and in December of
twenty five, we're fighting to win the division and for
a playoff position and seating, and we go get in
the playoffs and we make some noise there. And so
that's what I'm what I want to do, is sitting
(06:03):
here next year, we're all looking at each other's like, Wow,
look at the turnaround, Look at that group, Look what
look what Liam and his team did. Look at that
GM and the draft and the free agency that they
had I mean all those things. That's what in my
role is just to support and make and help help
them do that and make sure we're communicating and we're
aligned and working with Shad. Shad will be involved. It's
(06:26):
you know, in all big decisions. He always is. He'll
be and hopefully he's even going to be in the
build even more if his schedule allows it. He's a
pretty busy guy. So I'm looking forward to working together
as a team. We're gonna be one team and we're
gonna get this thing going.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
A lot of people will know Liam Cohen's offense from
last year, but relatively speaking, he hasn't been in the
league for a long time.
Speaker 2 (06:48):
Sure, what do you think that people should.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Know about him as a man, as a leader, as
somebody that's coming in the organization that's going to be
in the locker room and you know, might might want
to you know, or might need to get his presence known.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
Get ready to work, Get ready to go, guys, all
gas like, here we go, We're going to work and
uh And he believes And he was raised his dad
was a coach and his dad influenced and I got
to meet his dad. What a great guy. He is
and uh, he believes in the fundamentals. Football is one
on the line of scrimmage. And so we got to
(07:24):
get the offense and defensive lines right. We got to
control the line scrimtge. We have to be the most
physical team. We got to be the toughest team. And
so you're gonna see a guy that yeah, offensive offensive,
big mind, mastermind, whatever you want, gur or whatever. That's proven.
We know we can do that. But I think what
people get to know about him is this guy is
a high energy let's go, let's work, and he believes
(07:50):
in toughness and physical and win the line of scrimmage.
And and that's why we're gonna have success. You gotta
you gotta win the line of scrimmage to win in
the NFL. Look at the two teams in the Super Bowl.
Philadelphi Eagles have great offense and defensive lines. They're physical,
they're tough. You look at everyone talks about Patrick Mahomes
and yes, he's the best quarterback, and Andy Reid is
the best coach, there's no doubt about just look at
(08:10):
their resumes. But the Chiefs win the line of scrimmage.
We look at Chris Jones in that defensive line. You
look at the interior of that Chief's offensive line, they
know that you got to win there before you can
do anything else.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
Obviously, results on the field matter, that's the most important thing.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
That's why you're in this position.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
Now with the results comes Trevor Lawrence, and I'm assuming
that Liam Cohen coming in. You know, job number one
is to get the most boast out of the franchise quarterback.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
It's all of our Like listen, we've invested a lot
Trevor Lawrence, and the reason we invested them is because
we believe in them, and we still believe in them.
Last year was tough injuries, what the production, but from
the whole offense, that's just not on Trevor Lawrence, and
that's unfair to put it on them. Liam believes Trevor
Lawrence is the guy franchise quarterback that he's gonna lead us.
(09:01):
I have strong convictions. I've said it on every show
we've ever had, and Trevor believes that. And so we
now need to help Trevor continue to improve and and
and become who we all know he is and who
he believes he is. But then we got to surround
him like it's just it's not just about him. It's
amazing how much better you are as a quarterback when
(09:24):
you can run the ball, when you have a run
game and everything else opens up. It's amazing how much
of a better quarterback you can be when your defense
is getting the opposing offense off the field, giving you
more opportunities. Those are things we didn't do, and so
everyone you know, and that's the nature of the position
you put. Everyone you know gives the quarterback all the
(09:44):
credit and he doesn't deserve all the credit, and they
give him all the blame when he doesn't deserve all
the blame. So yes, it's this is a league where
you have the quarterback has to operate at a high level.
But however, you got to surround him. You gotta go
back to the line of screen, but you got to
run the ball. That makes everyone's jobs job on offense
a lot.
Speaker 1 (10:04):
Because it's a bit like you know, Saquon Barkley obviously
had an amazing season. With Saquon Barkley, it's it's everything
that surrounds him as well that's made him so good.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
So it's it's uh, I mean you to.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
Go turn on the tape and watch like Coon Barkley.
He's an amazing back, amazing back, but did he all
of a sudden become a two thousand yard rusher just
like because he changed jerseys? Come on, no, go look
at that offensive line. Go look at their production. Look
at the guys they've invested to and developed and how
they coach it up. That helps Sakuon, That helps Jalen.
(10:35):
I mean, it helps everybody. And so sometimes we forget
the foundation of the game of football at its core.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
Team game is.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
A team game. But it starts with those big guys
being physical and tough and in taking care of their
business and everything else will fall into place.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
Well, let's go into the GM search. Now where are
we at? Uh, you know, what can we expect them?
What are you looking for?
Speaker 1 (10:58):
And what's you know, Chikanda and Ford a GM.
Speaker 3 (11:02):
You know, I think we're looking for Number one. We
want to understand the individual, the person high character, high integrity,
good communicator, who's the who is that? Who's who's he?
Who is he as an individual? At its core? And
then we want to understand what's the vision, what's the
philosophy of for building a team? You know? And then
(11:23):
then the next step is okay, how do you see
where we are right now? And what would your plan be?
And so we want to gather all this information. You know,
you want to get a good person, you want a
good talent evaluator, and then you want to understand kind
of how they see it, and we want to make
sure it's aligned with how Seod sees it first and foremost,
how Liam sees it. I'll be a part of the process,
(11:44):
listening and giving input and then we'll all come together
and we'll make the right decision for who the GM
is shot. Will make the final decision with input from everybody,
everybody involved, and I believe we'll get it right. I
think we'll get it right, just like we got the
Liam Cone High right.
Speaker 2 (11:58):
And I'll be you know, being missing me not mentioned
of course.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
JAG's back in London, of course, as always at Wembley Stadium.
It's a part of the calendar now, something I imagine
that you're looking.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
Forward to, because you know you look forward to every
single year.
Speaker 3 (12:12):
Yeah, I like, I love coming to London and looking
forward to hopefully coming like I do every summer, coming
out this summer and doing our tour and seeing our
fans and and uh talking to them. And then I'll
be out there this year in a little bit different role.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
Yeah different.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
I won't be on the radio, but uh, i'll be
looking just like I was on the radio. Different perspective,
different vantage point, but looking for a win.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
Just just just a different people.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
You'll be giving you different. Yeah, but we're excited. It's
a it's it's it's good. It's good right now, and
that it should be and everyone should be excited. But
now we have work to do. It's about the process.
It's about getting the work. We have some big moments
coming up with Free Agency, a lot of work to
do there. Our interim gm uh Ethan Wall is doing
(12:57):
a heck of a job. I mean, leading that building
he's doing I can't say enough about Ethan and his
leadership and his integrity and how he's going through the process.
He'll be one of the finalists for the GYM. I mean,
we're we're gonna give him a real shot at this
because I know this working there, you know, I always
saw from Afar, so you don't really know. But being
in the building the last you know, seven to ten
(13:19):
days and working with Ethan, he's a first class and
he's doing a great job. So it's business as usual
right now to want our fans or anyone to think
like we're behind or you know, we're missing out on anything.
We're preparing for free agency, we're preparing for the draft.
Just got to do. You got to do more than
one thing at a time, and that's what we're doing
right now. And we're gonna get it done. We're gonna
(13:40):
get it right. But these are big moments coming up
for our franchise and for our fans.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
Just lastly, then, Tony, do you have a message for
the fans in the UK, the fans in Ireland right now?
Why specifically why they should be excited this offseason going
into the next season.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
For the Jacksonville Jaggers.
Speaker 3 (13:57):
Well, and not just because you're in Yeah, I'm the
most exactly because of who we hired as head coach
and what he's able to put on the field and
what we're gonna look like as an offense. Now, it's
gonna take time. It's a lot of work to do.
And so I like that camp Campinelli are defensive coordinator.
Wait do you see this guy and get a load
(14:18):
of him? Wow?
Speaker 2 (14:19):
I mean, what impress about him?
Speaker 3 (14:23):
He's tough, yeah, and he plays tough football, and he
coaches and a lot of juice, a lot of juice
with camp and uh, I'm excited to get for him,
to get our defense and the staff he's putting together
that'll be announced here soon, really good coaches. So it's
not just Liam, it's Campanelly. We're keeping Heath Farwell, who
(14:45):
best bet one of the best best teams units in
the NFL this year. So I'm excited about the staff
and I'm excited about our you know, our core players
and the guys we have a key position. So now
we've got to fill out the rest and I think
all our fans in the UK will be really excited
coming up.
Speaker 1 (15:03):
Totney, thank you so much for joining to talk as
a ways.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
Congratulations again, thanks, I appreciate it.
