Speaker 1 (00:08):
It's twenty one degrees in Jacksonville's eight in Bolton six
and killed there. This is TILL Talk, the official Jacksonville
Jaguars UK and Ireland podcast, presented by Gallagher. I'm Jay Lawrence.
As far as I'm aware, still no relation. He's Key
Ram sur And hello.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
Key, Hello Ja. Why do you say, as far as
you know, what.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Do you think? I don't know.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
There might be some you know, it might be some
sort of news you know that we are related.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
I don't know. JP Shadwick is here, Hello JP.
Speaker 4 (00:35):
I am not related, but it's nice to be with
the guests.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
That's definitely not related. The Jags have a new head coach.
Speaker 1 (00:43):
Welcome to Duval Liam Cohen loaves to get through today. Unsurprisingly,
this is probably the busiest episode we've ever had, actually,
and we're going to hear from the head coach's first
press conference a bit later on in the podcast. We
would update the rest of the news out of Jacksonville
and the Jags UK HQ two, but of course we'll
start with Coach Cohen. All right, just bear with me,
you two, okay, So we'll get to you in a second.
(01:04):
But I feel like we just need to go through
the last few weeks. This month in a nutshell, the
jag was fired head coach Peterson kept on GM. Trent
Boalki interviewed prospective head coaches. Liam Cohen was in the frame,
looked like though he was going to be staying in Tampa.
Jacks then fired ways with Boalkie. Cohen signs Tampa's upset.
(01:25):
Jack's happy, Trevor Lawrence happy is He's got a young,
offensive minded head coach. Jack's now looking for a new GM.
Tony Basselli's going to be helping that. And as no
till talk goes by without Brian Thomas Junior love he
is in the probi as he should be all along.
I think we can agree with that and nominated for
a Rookie of the Year JP.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
Have I missed anything?
Speaker 4 (01:45):
I think you covered it all. I mean, that's a
lot to get through there. It was a wild forty
eight hours. I'll give you that, because you know, the
news came down that Liam Cohen and backed out of
or taking his name out of the running for the
Jaguars head coaching job and was going to take a
lucrative number down in Tampa to stay as the offensive
coordinator and it wasn't long after that that the word
(02:06):
came on, okay, the Jags have parted ways with Trent Balkey.
And then it wasn't long after that the tea leaves
started coming together that this thing's still open and and
Liam Cohen is still interested in coming at least talking
to the Jaguars again. So that all happened within a day,
and in the next day here he is as the
(02:27):
head coach. And it's a quick turn. But you know what,
you only get, You might only get one opportunity as
a head coach, and to go through this process, right,
I mean, if things all of a sudden went sour
in Tampa Bay, for example, in the next year or
two offensively and for whatever in or out of his control,
like the he might not be in the mix a
(02:50):
lot of places again. So this was the time to
strike while the iron was hot, at least for Liam Cohen.
And from the outside looking in, we'll hear from him
a little bit later. Of course, you have to go
do it. It's a head coaching gig in the NFL.
It's in the same state you're in. It's got a quarterback,
They've got some players on this roster there are some holes.
So for Liam Cohen, a thirty nine year old guy
(03:11):
up and coming in the league, it's a good place
to really set down some roots.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
I mean, this isn't a Tampa Bay Buccaneers podcast, so
we don't need to worry about how they're feeling about anything,
but from a JAG's perspective, from a Jags fans perspective,
JP as well.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
I mean, I'm coming out of it feeling quite.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
Pleased because it feels like this is and in fact,
Shad Khan said a few weeks ago that he was
one of the things that he was most disappointed with
is how predictable the Jags were, And I mean, it
just feels like he's gone out to and got somebody
that is looks tailor made to be able to change that.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
You know, what helps predictability, though an unpredictability is a
running game, and that's the Jaguars didn't have. So you
can be a whole lot more unpredictable when you have
balance and they don't know what you're gonna do. So
there's some of that that goes with it too. And
just the way, yes that the Tampa Bay offense improved
(04:09):
year over year he came in last year and it
was a group that was like twenty third in the
league and yardage per game in twenty twenty three and
didn't score the ball a lot, like twentieth in the league. Well,
this year they finished top five in both rushing and passing,
the only team in the league to do that. And
you know, it was his first year actually calling plays
full time in the NFL when he was the OC
(04:30):
at LA with the Rams, Sean mcvays calling the plays.
He's kind of just crafting it up. So that's that's
that's huge for the way he can turn some things around.
Curious to see what he does with the personality has
and what his mindset is moving forward for you know,
the needs moving ahead is we talked a lot about
(04:51):
you know, up the middle on defense, on the offensive line,
big people, all these things. Does he have that same mindset.
I think that'll be a big thing to hear in
the press conference, you know. But he's a guy that
came up through that tree. That's the hot tree right now,
the McVeagh tree. There are now four head coaches in
the league that worked under Sean mcvaigh, So it's kind
(05:13):
of how it goes. Sometimes you get a hot head
coach in McVeigh who's won a Super Bowl and everybody
wants a piece of that, right, and the Jaguars have
a piece of that now, and let's see if he
can kind of create his own tree. That's the next
step moving ahead for Liam.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Kahn JP TLS. What's it fifth season gonna be next season?
Seeing what Liam Cohen did with Baker Mayfield last season,
do you feel like this is a good fit and
potentially some course correction is going to happen next season.
Speaker 4 (05:45):
That had to be a big piece of the interview process, right,
I mean, if not the first question, but I'd say
the top three questions.
Speaker 5 (05:53):
Right.
Speaker 4 (05:53):
I'm not in the process clearly, but if you're paying
the quarterback fifty million dollars a year, that's gonna be
high on the priority list of what do you think
about him? How do you get him better? And I'm
sure he had all the right answers, it sounds like,
so we'll see. I mean, you've got to get in
the room and work together. You know, you can hear
about each other and watch Bucks games all you want,
(06:17):
but it's a personality thing too, because you're in the
room with this guy for twelve hours, and you got
to figure out an offense that works best around Trevor Lawrence.
I think that's probably what he'll do. It's not going
to be just a plug and play offense. Okay, what
is Trevor like? What does he do well? And a
lot of people will say this, but it's really hard
to execute that and build the offense around what Trevor
(06:40):
is comfortable with and does best and then get him
better in those places where he's lacked a little bit.
So I think Liam's got the ability to go do that.
We'll go see if he can go do it.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Let's just go through that foty eight hours and JP,
because you know, a lot happened in that forty eight hours,
probably one of the more dramatic things in any head
coach seuch that you can think of for any team recently.
To be honest with you, take us through that, and
take us, you know through what you know Shad Khan
would have been thinking at that moment.
Speaker 4 (07:09):
I might have been thinking, like, wait a minute, why
is another guy backing out? Like I bet that's what
he was thinking, right. Johnson goes to the Bears and
then was he you know what he have come here?
Who knows, right, I don't know all the things. Yeah,
(07:29):
it doesn't matter anymore, right, But Cohen interviewed and then
took his name out, So okay, that's not trending the
right way. He just don't know behind closed doors how
those interactions truly went, and you might not ever really
find out, you know, but it was clear that another
change was needed, and Shad Khan left that door open,
(07:52):
by the way in that press conference right after the
season that hey, if some some coach comes in here
with a different plan or an idea, I'm all here. Basically,
I'm paraphrasing. He didn't say that, that's my line, but
and then he stood up to it, so I got
I don't who knows if Li and Cohne even presented that, Hey,
I got a guy and we got a thing. You know,
here's the system we should do. However, it changed pretty
(08:16):
quickly after that, so you can put those in whatever
order you want, but it feels like that's the order
of operations, and bang, all of a sudden, Cohens listening again,
and I'm guessing the number probably went up to this
is professional football. It is about the money and I'm
gonna guess mister Kahan decided, Hey, you know what, let's
(08:37):
let's let's phoney up a little bit here and go
get our guy.
Speaker 1 (08:41):
He actually released his statement. Let me read a bit
of a statement from Jackson and and Shad Khan. Actually,
I'll just read the first line to repeat my message
earlier this week. I'm deeply committed to building a winner
here in Jacksonville.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
This is a positive step.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
Do you know what?
Speaker 2 (08:56):
I was following the head Coach Tracker and two names
that were coming up a lot that made me really excited.
One was Ben Jonson, one was Liam Cohen. And Ben
Johnson didn't work out, that's all right, Let's see how
he gets on at the Bear. So that would be fun.
Liam Cohen, I think that is exciting. I loved what
he did with Baker Mayfield and the Bucks, and I
(09:19):
think bringing that energy, that experience to Jacksonville, I think
it would be fun to talk about positive things over
the next podcasts rather than what we've been talking about
the rest of last season. So yeah, dude, I'm excited.
One thing about the head coach Tracker though, JP. Two
(09:39):
questions for you your interview for head Coach didn't come
up on head coach tracker and why did you turn
the position down this time?
Speaker 4 (09:48):
Sources say that I was not even close to the mix,
so that.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
Goes to beardy. They said to Beardy, right, and that's
why you got rid of it. Like next time, I'm
not going to just.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
I'm not gonna have once betten twice shy.
Speaker 6 (10:02):
Right.
Speaker 4 (10:02):
Yeah, but you know the whole list of guys that
you saw come in and talk the first wave, you know,
like half offense and half defensive mindset, and of course
on the defensive guys, you're like, okay, who's your offensive
coordinator going to? Because we just talked about the first
question is the quarterback? So yeah, I'm sure they had
to go through some of that. And let's now they've
got the offensive guy in and let's let's see what
(10:25):
his answer is of who's gonna call plays. I'm guessing
that he probably wants to call plays. But he's also
never managed a team on the field, So for a
first time head coach, you're gonna have a lot of
new things that surprise you and are like, wait a minute,
this is a whole lot more than I bargained for
in terms of time away from football, away from the
(10:46):
x's and o's, doing media obligations, meetings with players. I mean,
all these things you really haven't had to do before
as a coordinator or a play caller. Now all of
a sudden, you're managing the whole operation. So there'll be
probably a little bit of a learning curve with that.
But I'm sure he's been told what do you expect
from some folks who have kind of helped them all?
Speaker 2 (11:07):
Are you're a fan?
Speaker 7 (11:10):
Right?
Speaker 2 (11:10):
You put in our WhatsApp group that you like this?
Speaker 8 (11:12):
Right?
Speaker 3 (11:12):
Yeah, no, I'm a fan.
Speaker 1 (11:14):
I think that you know, back to what I said earlier,
Shad Khant said that the offense, you know, the team
was predictable and he wanted to change that up. And
at the end of the day, we are now several years,
as you brought up earlier into Trevor Lawrence's career, and
we can all sit here and say that he is
a talented player, and we agree that he's a talented player,
but we can all sit here and also say that
we feel like he hasn't shown his full potential on
(11:36):
the field. So what do you do in that situation?
You know, we've spoken about this at length. You need
to make sure that the situation is as perfect as
it could possibly be to get the talent out from
Trevor Lawrence. And if that means getting somebody like Liam Cohenen,
then I think that's a that's a great thing. The
only thing I would say at JP, and you mentioned
(11:56):
it a little bit earlier on, is that he's had
a year calling plays. He's spent two stints in Kentucky.
You know, he was in with the with the Rams
as well. Are we going all in on a on
a small amount of type A great?
Speaker 4 (12:08):
It's a great question, right. I mean, there's not a
lot of Uh, there's not a lot that's to you know,
all these young guys are hot and upcoming coaches. Well,
there's a reason they don't have a lot of film
out there now. He's had a lot of time in
LA under mcvagh. I mean, he was the assistant wide
receivers coach in eighteen and nineteen and they had some
really good receivers those years that he was helping coach.
(12:31):
And then in twenty was the assistant quarterback coach. Got
a little more involved that year, went to Kentucky. As
you mentioned in twenty one, as the OC and the
quarterback coach. I'm sure he was calling plays there and
then back with the Rams where you you know, you're
in the room with McVeagh every day as the offensive
coordinator in twenty two and it's a tough year because
(12:52):
you know, the quarterback got hurt and that was his
first run with Baker. Oh, Baker Mayfield's here, okay, cool,
and then they got connected then with back Kentucky. It's
just how it goes sometimes, like you don't know that
there's no direct line on these careers in the NFL,
and well, there's gonna be one for a little while now.
(13:12):
If all things go well, he's sticking around here for
a number of years and if you keep winning, you'll
be here as long as you want to be here
as the head coach.
Speaker 1 (13:20):
You mentioned as well that there's there'll be a learning
curve which is expected. You wonder whether he'll try and
preempt that a little bit by getting some experienced coordinators in,
some experienced coaches, people that have been there, have done
it before. Have you heard anything about that. Can we
expect some you know, experience.
Speaker 2 (13:39):
Sense to surround himself with experience, right?
Speaker 4 (13:42):
It would make it would make sense, you think. However,
still I'm gonna guess from the outside looking in and
still not talking to him in person as of this conversation,
he's gonna be calling the plan and be the guy
that's yeah for sure. Right, So okay, that's one thing.
Now to your point about the defense, Yeah, it was
(14:04):
kind of the feel that Doug Peterson I think had,
or the idea that Doug Peterson had, Hey, let's get
an experienced coordinator on this side so I don't have
to go over there as much. It didn't work out
like that, but that was kind of the idea last season.
So what does that mean moving ahead? I think that's
probably a good call on the defensive side. He needs
(14:24):
somebody who's done it before you can just kind of hey,
go to your side of the building. We'll see you
on Sunday basically, and see you on the practice field. Now,
he's again like we're talking about the learning curve. It's
in games. It's decision making, it's you know, two minute drives.
When are we calling time out? When am I challenging?
Who's telling me to challenge? Like all these things as
(14:47):
a first time head coach, it's just a few it's
a long list. You got to figure out the operation
of that. So this is the time he's gonna get
a staff in and they're gonna figure all those things out,
and it might take a little bit of time time
in game, and this preseason will be huge for that.
In games that truly don't matter and the wins and losses,
(15:07):
how do we operate? What's who's on the headset with me?
What am I? What are we doing? Who's telling me
to call time out? Who? You know what? What if
we're on defense and I'm in an offensive meeting, like, okay,
do I need to How do I balance my time
on the sideline? So all that's in play. I think
that's why this preseason, this offseason is so huge for
a new head coach.
Speaker 1 (15:28):
I just think the whole thing is is exciting. I
think it's exciting that he managed to take, as you
mentioned a little bit earlier on the Bucks, from you know,
a middling offense to one of the best in the league.
Baker Mayfield as well, who himself. You know, he's had issues,
He's bounced around the league. Lest remember he's bounced around.
He was with the Panthers, briefly was with the Rams.
With the Bucks, he's been able to prove himself as
(15:48):
a good starting option, and that's what we want to
see with the Jags, don't we.
Speaker 4 (15:53):
It also helps that we have a Hall of Fame
receiver out there throwing to too and Mike Evans, right,
I mean, he got some He had some part about.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
Brian Thomas Junior a second. I was like, someone's going early.
Speaker 4 (16:03):
I'm not comparing them yet. However, you might dynamic playmaking
guy or two or three around you, and he had
some of that in Tampa, right, And Okay, when you
have that going with a play call and to go
with it, that's the combination.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
He's the guy that really, I mean, Trevor Lawrence hopefully
is going to be you know, pleased with the appointment,
but Brian Thomas Junior is the guy that's going to
be like, Okay, this might work out quite well for me.
Speaker 4 (16:30):
Absolutely, I mean no doubt about that, because I mean,
think about this offense last year and what was going on,
and he's still getting they didn't throw in the football
the first half of the season, Yeah, and he still
goes over it that.
Speaker 2 (16:42):
The numbers considering that fact are super impressive.
Speaker 4 (16:47):
So when you have actual a functioning offense with that
guy healthy and playing well. Look out. I think there's
there's big, big things ahead for Brian Thomas.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
In fact, what talking about Brian Thomas Junior. No that
we you know, we speak about him quite a lot.
Speaker 3 (17:03):
Let's be fair.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
Whilst we're talking about him, he's had a bit of
recognition over the last couple of weeks as an e JP.
Speaker 4 (17:10):
Yeah, you know, got the nod as the first alternate
to go to the Pro Bowl in Orlando. The Pro
Bowl games there's not an actual game anymore, it's flag
football and things. However, he was the first alternate. Say
Flowers was injured so unable to play for Baltimore, so
you could argue he should have been one of the
top four anyway statistically, but it's tough for a rookie
to crack that, especially in Jacksonville. You know, Jay Flowers
(17:33):
and the Ravens are out there all the time, all
these things. So I wasn't as upset with that as
a lot of people might have been. That he was
out to begin with, but being the first alternate, there
was a pretty good idea he was going to get
in anyway. But good for him, it's a fantastic rookie season.
And with that, he's a finalist for the AP NFL
(17:54):
Offensive Rookie of the Year. I don't know if we'll
get it. Jaydon Daniels probably's gonna get in my opinion,
is the hell of a year for the quarterback for Washington.
But I mean you can't argue with the numbers that
Brian put up. It's a great honor and I guess
he'll be at the NFL Honors when they award that,
as my guess. So good for him to be in
the spotlight and get at least some recognition for what
(18:16):
was a really tough year around Jacksonville. So good for him. Man,
it's only it's only going to go up from here,
I hope for Brian Thomas Junior.
Speaker 2 (18:25):
Well, one thing, right when when Shad Khan let Doug
Peterson go in his statement, he was talking about looking
for a head coach that shared his huge ambition for
the Jaguars, and I have to say, when you hear
Liam Cohen talk and when you see what he did
last year with the Bucks offense, I think that word
(18:47):
ambition comes to mind for me and I like this match.
Speaker 1 (18:50):
Yes, Liam Cohen. We've spoken a little bit about the
coaches as well. We haven't really spoken much about the
GM the GM search.
Speaker 3 (19:00):
Is there anything that you can tell us about that.
Speaker 4 (19:01):
There's really not much right now. I think they want
to get through from what I understand, they want to
get through the introduction of Cohen.
Speaker 2 (19:09):
Do you think Liam Cohen has any input on this jpe.
Speaker 4 (19:12):
I bet he'll have a little. He'll be in the conversation,
as my guess. But I think they're gonna take their
time too on this. I don't think this is a
two days and done. They still have to go through
rooty rule process with general managers as well, so there's
gonna be all that in play. But they're gonna get
the best candidates they can. They're gonna talk to them all,
give them all a fair shot like they did this time,
(19:33):
and they go from there. But I don't think they're
gonna rush to get a guy in here by Wednesday,
you know, and run the general manager role. It's gonna
be a little bit of a process again, and they'll
make sure they have the right guy and the right
combination of people in the building to get that done.
So nothing has of right now. I think they want
to keep this as clear as they can early in
(19:53):
the week for Liam Cohen and lift him up as
the new head coach and he's the guy that's running
the show and get.
Speaker 3 (19:59):
Have a staf want to wait too long ago? Will
I JP?
Speaker 1 (20:02):
Because you know the draft is isn't too long away.
Speaker 4 (20:07):
It's coming up. Yeah, thanks for the reminder. It's Clock's ticket.
We're less than a month away from the combine, right,
So yeah, now the scouting staff's in place, The interim
GM is still here in Ethan Wall, like he's running
all those things like that. The only person that's gone
is Balky, right. Everybody else is still in place doing
their job. So in theory, whoever comes in as a
(20:28):
general manager, which Ethan Wall will probably be in that
mix as well because he's the interim, he'll probably get
a conversation. At least whoever gets that role, we'll have
a staff in place already and get through the draft.
That's that's how different it is in the scouting and
the coaching clocks. In the cycles, right, most of the
scouts contracts are through the draft, and then there's a
(20:52):
whole huge change in scouts and personnel people after the
draft usually every year in the NFL, whereas coaches are
like right after the season, you know, so that you
want the staff in place, that the people who have
the institutional knowledge of what's going on in college football
and have already scouted players for multiple years and have
a database and all these things going on. You need that.
(21:14):
You can't just black everybody at one time because that
you might have the data in front of you, but
you don't know what it means, right, So so we'll
see what happens. But that's that's kind of the cycle.
In the NFL with the scouts, you have a staff
in place. Work is still going on, Scouting is still happening.
They're going to go to Pro Days with or without
(21:36):
a GM, and at some point they'll have a GM
to run the show.
Speaker 1 (21:40):
JAP, thank you for thank you for joining us. I
just want to end on this line from from Liam
cong will hear from him shortly. As head coach of
the Jacksonville Jaguars, I will hire first class coaching staff,
establish a distinctive and effective brand of football on both
sides of the ball.
Speaker 3 (21:55):
That's what gets me the most exciting. I think that's
what gets.
Speaker 4 (21:58):
Distinctive that's that's that's big an identity, not have an
identity last year. That's exactly what that means. So whatever
that identity is, just have one and stick to it.
Speaker 1 (22:12):
JP wonderful as always, Thank you so much for joining us.
Speaker 4 (22:16):
All right, guys, Thanks Keith, Thanks Jay, appreciate you guys.
Speaker 1 (22:20):
Okay, so we're here from New Jacks head coach Liam Cohen.
Shortly but over the last few weeks since the last episode.
Actually key, no surprises. The Jacksonville Jankus have been announced
to play in London in the twenty twenty five season.
In fact that there are another couple teams as well,
the Cleveland Browns the New York Jets. Will find out
the opponents in the next few months. But if you
(22:40):
are already thinking about it, first of all, don't blame you.
Speaker 3 (22:43):
It's already on my mind. To be honest.
Speaker 1 (22:44):
We actually have an exclusive Jacksonville Jankus London hospitality package

champagne reception, street food style buffet stations, make another noise,
oh okay, too far, and unlimited that's what you're going

Speaker 2 (23:08):
So are you going to enjoy the game if you're
drinking unlimited beers and wines for the three hours before?
Speaker 3 (23:13):
I'm sure you can. I'm sure that's the challenge. Reserve

day program, and post game savories. The Art Hospitality package
also offers exclusive NFL entertainment and live music. Register now

game day that seat unique dot com. Key, it's not
(23:39):
It's not bad, is it to already be thinking about
the Jags coming back to London?
Speaker 2 (23:44):
No, and now that you're mentioning that package, that sounds
pretty pretty good as well. No, dude, I mean as
soon as as soon as we leave Wembley, I'm thinking
about thinking about Wembley.
Speaker 3 (23:58):
Okay, let's say from coach then showe.
Speaker 1 (24:00):
He sat down with Florida and NFL media for his
first press conference as JAG's head coach.
Speaker 3 (24:06):
This is what you have to say.
Speaker 9 (24:10):
As I said last week, this is a moment of
a lifetime. I want to thank people along this way
in terms of the process to get here, Tony Kahan,
Tony Bisselli, Mark Lamping, and Ethan Waugh. I genuinely thank
you for your honesty and trust throughout this process. I
owe a great debt of thanks to a lot of
(24:32):
the coaches that I've gone through the process with and
given me opportunities to.
Speaker 8 (24:37):
Coach, because that's what I love to do.
Speaker 9 (24:40):
Todd Bowles in the Tampa organization, Sean McVay and the Rams,
Mark Stoops at Kentucky, Mark Whipple at UMass, my alma mater,
Phil Estis at Brown, and Don Brown, who is my
coach as a player in a towards me in this profession.
(25:01):
They were all great football minds, but one thing they
had in common was leadership. And that's what this is
all about. It takes complementary football at all three phases
to be great offense, defense, and special teams. How do
we want to play the game? And that's fast, fundamentally sound, attacking,
(25:25):
situational masters, and tough both mentally and physically. You see
players in the room right here, guys that I've had
conversations with already.
Speaker 8 (25:36):
It will always be about you. Always. It is players
over plays.
Speaker 9 (25:43):
How do we make this as much about the players
and making this about bringing.
Speaker 8 (25:47):
Out the best in you. That's what this is about.
Speaker 9 (25:50):
Jacksonville, the community, du All, this has to be collaborative.
I want it to be as collaborative as possible for
us to go to the next level.
Speaker 8 (26:06):
I cannot thank you guys for this moment, sad.
Speaker 9 (26:10):
You just made a dream absolutely come true and we're
gonna work our tails off to bring championships to Jacksonville.
Thank you so much, and we're ready to get to work.
Speaker 7 (26:21):
Thank you.
Speaker 4 (26:30):
Who's got the first question today?
Speaker 10 (26:31):
Gene, congratulations, welcome to Jacksonville. Before I get to forward,
thinking about your opportunity here, could you just briefly go
over last week a lot of reports that you were
going to stay in Tampa for a substantial pay raise,
then you changed your mind decided to interview here. Could
you talk a little bit about what made you change
(26:53):
your mind and was there any in any way any
misgivings in your mind about changing your mind, not about
pursuing a head coaching opportunity.
Speaker 9 (27:03):
The opportunity to coach in Tampa was a phenomenal one
to get my feet wet in the NFL as the
offensive coordinator, and I thank them so much for that opportunity.
As you continue to do more research and gaining more
information as you go, it started to become more clear
with every hour that this was an opportunity that you
(27:24):
just can't pass up for so many different reasons, and
you ultimately want to do truly what's best for you
and your family, and that's what this came down to.
I will always love and remember those guys in Tampa,
my players, those guys, love them to death. But this
is an opportunity to also go and do it with
(27:46):
some new guys, right, and to go reach and touch people,
because that's what coaching and teaching is, and that's what
this opportunity is all about.
Speaker 7 (27:53):
And extremely thankful for that.
Speaker 9 (27:55):
But head forward, head and eyes up, and we're moving forward.
Speaker 10 (28:00):
Just to be clear, was that did this have anything
to do with the change in the front office structure.
Speaker 9 (28:04):
This was completely about an opportunity to work for an
owner and a group of people with a group of
players that needed some help. And that's what coaching is, right,
That's what coaching is all about, is trying to go
help people and be around people.
Speaker 7 (28:20):
So no, that was not the factor.
Speaker 10 (28:23):
Okay, beyond the opportunity to develop a quarterback like Trevor.
What is it most that excites you about this opportunity?
Speaker 4 (28:31):
Right?
Speaker 9 (28:32):
You see this place, Look at this right now, right,
look at this the community, what we're doing in the future,
the opportunity to be a part of something different.
Speaker 7 (28:45):
Right, Let's be honest. This is different. That's awesome.
Speaker 9 (28:49):
That's exciting for me and for my family to truly
be a part of something different, to go impact and
influence football players and people and staff.
Speaker 7 (29:00):
That's what this is all about.
Speaker 9 (29:02):
It's about trying to be a part of change and
improvement and go try to go do something different and win. Right,
Winning cures a lot. Winning cures a lot, and that's
the goal.
Speaker 11 (29:15):
Well, I am welcome to Duval Rick Blue with not
a two point five FM and ten ten XL. Been
a lot of speculation, but we haven't heard it from you.
You will be calling offensive plays.
Speaker 9 (29:25):
Yes, Rick, absolutely, we'll be calling football plays.
Speaker 11 (29:28):
How important is it for stability?
Speaker 7 (29:30):
You know? Stability?
Speaker 11 (29:31):
Now with Trevor, this will be the fourth different play
caller as he gets ready for his fifth year. With
just a perfect scenario for you, as far as you
know what you've seen so far in his four years
and where you believe.
Speaker 7 (29:45):
You can take him.
Speaker 9 (29:46):
I was telling Trevor this the other day that I've
watched him play, you know, live as a freshman in
high school.
Speaker 7 (29:53):
It was Beauford High.
Speaker 9 (29:54):
School against Carol Wood Cartersville. Excuse me, sorry, I was
in the South, Joe. I was in Georgia.
Speaker 7 (30:01):
Man, that's all I knew. And I was seeing this freshman.
Speaker 9 (30:04):
In high school play the position at a high level,
standing tall, making throws, delivering, and I walked out of
there like, man.
Speaker 3 (30:13):
This guy's this is different.
Speaker 7 (30:15):
I had no idea who he was.
Speaker 9 (30:17):
And then you fast forward to now, Right, how do
we make Trevor Lawrence in this offense as dynamic and
explosive as we can be? Right, We've got to build
it around him as well. Right, We've got to make
every part of this about improvement, and he will be
a part of that process.
Speaker 7 (30:36):
He's earned that, right.
Speaker 9 (30:38):
I cannot respect his toughness and mentality and work ethic
more than I do already from afar and this will
all be about Trevor right now.
Speaker 12 (30:47):
Dimitrius Harvey with the Florida Times Union of Liam just
you were able to be here in Jacksonville during training
camp during joint practices.
Speaker 7 (30:55):
I'm curious what you.
Speaker 12 (30:56):
Were able to learn about maybe the team a little bit,
and then obviously the facilit and all that.
Speaker 9 (31:00):
Great question to me, tris that was a huge opportunity
for me to see this. I walked through these halls
and oh my, this place is awesome.
Speaker 7 (31:10):
And you start to see it.
Speaker 9 (31:12):
And then during the course of practice those few days, you're.
Speaker 7 (31:16):
Obviously competing against the defense on.
Speaker 9 (31:18):
One side of the field, and I kept hearing oohs
and ahs on the other side, and you start to
you go back and wash the tape and you see
them throwing the football and VTJ going down the field
and these guys making plays, and that was cool to see.
I got an opportunity to talk to Josh heinz Allen
that day. I got an opportunity to talk to Luke
Fortner that day. Guys that I had had a you know,
(31:40):
relationship with, if you will, Those were all little parts
of this right where you got you have an opportunity
to look back and say, man, that thing's got a shot, right,
and that that gets you excited. And I think that
that was the beginning, as you mentioned, of really looking
at this as the opportunity that it became.
Speaker 12 (31:57):
I'm curious too, you sort of touched on, but just
from what you've seen from Afar about Trevor and the
rest of the team, what do you sort of make
of it? You know, heading into this sort of new chapter.
Speaker 9 (32:08):
I've mentioned this to the guys, this isn't a four
win team. Yes, that is the the record, but this
is not a four win team.
Speaker 7 (32:16):
Okay, how do.
Speaker 9 (32:17):
We go from winning games to not losing them? I
think that that's something we've got to address, and that
is got to be in our veins, in our DNA.
Speaker 7 (32:29):
The culture of winning.
Speaker 9 (32:31):
I've learned it from the Los Angeles Rams and from
a ton of other great organizations on how to go
win football games, and so I think that that's something
that it has. We have to start as a team,
as a group and show how we're going to go
do it.
Speaker 5 (32:46):
Hi, Liam, nice to meet you, me O'Brian tentonxl A
lots of good How are you? A lot's been made
about going back and forth between college and the pros.
Speaker 3 (32:54):
I know you've spoken about it before.
Speaker 5 (32:56):
How you feel play calling, getting those reps that was
what was paramount, That's why you moved back and forth.
If you could just describe the last four or five
years going back and forth and perhaps how strategically, maybe
even this has set you up for this opportunity here today.
Speaker 7 (33:11):
That's a great question.
Speaker 9 (33:12):
The foundation of my career started in college and locker
rooms in Maine and Brown and UMass, places that, let's
be honest, don't have a ton of resources. So you
learn kind of your DNA as a coach in some
of those places, right, And then in the last few years,
you get an opportunity to go coach in the National
(33:33):
Football League, which has been the dream. Then you make
a decision that ultimately was a little dicey at the time,
I'll be honest. You go back to a place where
you just had success and had a great opportunity to
be at, but that was all done to go call
plays again, right, And that was the experience that I
kind of missed that year in LA. Knew why I
(33:55):
was going to take that job, but ultimately probably underestimated
some of the the leadership that goes with calling plays
and truly running.
Speaker 7 (34:03):
The show on offense.
Speaker 9 (34:05):
Things have changed in the landscape of college football, right,
That's we all know that. And when you start to
have a young family. Things change, your priorities change, and
the National Football League does provide a little bit more
of an opportunity to be a father and a husband
and a friend. And that's kind of why we've done
the back and forth for the last few years. But
(34:26):
I'll be in the NFL hopefully for a while.
Speaker 13 (34:28):
Dan Hickin tend to XL and CBS. Mister con Liam,
Welcome to Jacksonville, Sean. I'll start with you as you
form this front office reports that you used Tony Boselli
helped you out, and the coaches starts with you in
the forefront. Is there a role for Tony going forward
in the front office or now.
Speaker 14 (34:47):
Well, you know we are going to have a position
and you know, we're checking with the league what the
rules are, what we have to follow, and you know,
and then we'll ticket from there.
Speaker 6 (34:58):
Okay, Mike Rocker with ESPN, Liam, who has sort of
been the people that have really influenced you in the
way you call plays, the way you kind of design
your offense, and you know obviously work with Sean McVay.
So would you consider yourself part of the Sean McVay tree.
Speaker 9 (35:11):
Definitely, Yeah, I think It starts off with him, my
dad right here in terms of the mindset.
Speaker 7 (35:17):
He was a play caller.
Speaker 9 (35:18):
He was an offense offensive you know, designer, you know,
and he always instilled the players overplays mentality. And then
you go to Brown with Phil Estes to you mess
with Mark Whipple and then continue to go and then yeah,
I think getting to the rams in with Sean that
(35:39):
was where I learned.
Speaker 7 (35:40):
Truly the game.
Speaker 9 (35:41):
I think in a lot of ways right got my
if you will, PhD in coaching and learned at a
different level to be around him, the Kevin O'Connell's, the
Zach Taylor's, those guys, the Matt Lafleurs. To be around
them to see how they operated. This is the way
I would like to do things. You're always going to
have your own twist on it, but I'm proud to
(36:05):
say I'm in the saw McVay tree.
Speaker 15 (36:07):
Brent Martineau from CBS forty seven, Fox thirty Action Sports Shock.
How much does what is a head factor into how
you viewed this because obviously you have this year, but
it's a limited capacity inside the stadium in twenty six,
no home games in twenty seven, new stadium in twenty eight.
Was that a part of the equation for you when
you're looking at this job.
Speaker 9 (36:28):
I've actually looked at that as an exciting part of
this honestly. You know, my wife been in the military,
born in the Philippines, moved all over her childhood. I've
moved around a lot throughout this process and throughout.
Speaker 7 (36:43):
My career here, so we're kind of used to that.
Speaker 9 (36:45):
Honestly, we embrace that and to try to bring home
wins to Jacksonville.
Speaker 7 (36:52):
That is important to protect our home turf.
Speaker 9 (36:55):
It's going to be a little bit different, it's going
to be a little complicated over the next few year years.
But if we don't embrace that, then we have no shot,
right if we can go start to build something that
people are really proud of over these next two years.
In year three, wherever we're playing, we want people to
come and then to go into this next one that
(37:15):
we're coming into. I mean, sky's the limits. So that's
something that we're excited about.
Speaker 15 (37:20):
Is that a mentality, by the way, to embrace even
the London games and how much do you embrace the
idea where this team has played and at times played
well over there.
Speaker 7 (37:28):
My wife's favorite city. You know, it's a great place.
Speaker 9 (37:31):
It's something cool, unique, different that ultimately, like I mentioned before,
that you want to be a part of You want
to be a part of change. You want to be
a part of something unique, and that's what this opportunity
does present. It isn't the norm. Nothing about this has
been the norm. But that's really cool. That's really cool
(37:52):
to be a part of that, and we're excited about it.
Speaker 3 (37:54):
Liam once again, congratulations.
Speaker 12 (37:56):
How do you assess the lines of scrimmage here and
where do you guys need to get better?
Speaker 9 (38:01):
I think we would all you know, agree that it
needs to improve, right. I think that when you look
at first and foremost the offensive side of the ball,
you know you want that unit and that group, it's
the first thing when you break the huddle that the
defense sees. I want that to mean something. We want
that to mean something.
Speaker 7 (38:22):
And it will. And that's a mentality.
Speaker 9 (38:24):
That's personnel, that scheme, that's technique, that's fundamentals, that's attitude.
That's something that we need to make sure we instill.
And then on the defensive side of the ball, I
think we all know that we've got some talented dudes there.
We've got some guys that really go how do we
continue to ensure the inside? But we got three We've
got multiple guys up front that can do some good things.
(38:46):
We've got to put them in a position to be successful.
Speaker 7 (38:49):
That's our job. The guys are there.
Speaker 9 (38:51):
We can continue to add in that room, right, add
multiple different positions as well.
Speaker 7 (38:57):
But that's where it starts.
Speaker 9 (38:59):
As you mentioned, to go and playoff games and to
go do it, you've got to be able to run
the football and stop the run first and foremost.
Speaker 1 (39:08):
I hate to finish the podcast on a sour note. Then, yeah,
it's been a it's been a few weeks since our
last podcast. We did we did confirm, all right, we
did confirm that at the end of the last podcast
that I did win the prediction standings, and therefore I
(39:28):
would be being sent something that belonged to you, a
bit of Jags merchandise. Now, I could have gone with
the rare bespoke Jags artwork that you've had made, but
I actually quite like you, would quite like you to
still be a friend, So instead I chose the Trevor
Lawrence bubblehead.
Speaker 3 (39:46):
I've been checking the post.
Speaker 1 (39:48):
I've been scrutinizing the guy that the postman who, by
the way, coincidentally, where's a jags hat?
Speaker 3 (39:56):
Just saying yeah, saying it looks an awful lot like me, Yeah,
there's nothing. I'm got anything me.
Speaker 1 (40:03):
I am still waiting for this and I don't want
this to be a situation and I feel like this
could be where it comes. August thirty first, So just
before the start of the new season, at the.
Speaker 2 (40:15):
End of the last podcast, I sought some legal advice
that was a verbal agreement, which is not legally binding.
And if you know, as my nun always used to say,
I blame the postal service, I haven't sent it, Jay,
I will send it this week. It takes me more
(40:38):
than a couple of weeks to say goodbye to Mini
trev forward slash Julia. We've had a long time together.
It's a long, painful goodbye and one day, he she
they will be yours. Be patient?
Speaker 4 (40:51):
Are you?
Speaker 1 (40:53):
I just imagine that you're just sleeping next to it
every single night to say goodbye.
Speaker 3 (40:57):
I mean I was before.
Speaker 1 (40:58):
I agree, all right, So what you're saying is is
by the end of February, by the next podcast.
Speaker 3 (41:08):
It will be in my possession. All right, Yeah, that
is a that is a legal binding agreement by the way.
Speaker 2 (41:15):
Okay, I tell you what I will send in the post.
I'll send a legal contract in the make it official.
Speaker 3 (41:21):
I will not be sending it back. Key.
Speaker 1 (41:24):
Look forward to speaking to you again in a few
weeks time. It's been a dramatic last few weeks. Actually,
I don't know what the next few weeks has got
to hold.
Speaker 3 (41:31):
Hopefully, yeah, exactly.
Speaker 1 (41:32):
We'll have to wait and see, won't We speak to
you in the next few weeks.
Speaker 3 (41:36):
We'll be back at the end of February.
Speaker 1 (41:38):
Till Talk in partnership with Gallagher has been a shooting
sharp production for Jacksonville, Jaguars UK and Ireland.
Speaker 3 (41:44):
Go subscribe on your podcast on YouTube as well. We'll
see you in a few weeks time.
