Speaker 1 (00:00):
Our business today is about Carolina at San Francisco Monday
Night Football and a chance to jump into the top
spot all by their lonesome in the NFC South. We've
got five hours of radio pregame coverage, all sorts of
fun here live from Platform Sports in South End, a
true Vegas style sports bar with the Florida ceiling, televisions,

(00:20):
a five thousand square foot third story patio with full
skyline views. Great, great food, awesome people. We would love
to see you out there now. I realize it's Monday.
It's three twenty six here on the East Coast. A
lot of you aren't even off work yet. But if
you're listening, if you're out riding around, we hope to
see a ton of you out here tonight. This is
the Monday Night football spot in the Queen City for

(00:41):
Carolina at San Francisco on ESPN Monday Night Football. Steve
Smith Carolina Panthers Legend Monday Conversation coming up in twenty minutes.
He said on his podcast earlier today that he thinks
this team can be playoff bound and that Dave Canalis
has his guys ready to run through a brick wall.
Steve showing some real optimism. I'm about the Carolina Panthers.

(01:01):
Eric McLain acc Network back at four h five and
Paul b and Cardi Pauli Bucket's in the five o'clock
hour talking some basketball. But right now we head out
west and we welcome in a man who I call
a dear friend in the business and somebody I always
turn to when it's time to talk about matchups with
teams from the Bay. Longtime sports radio, sports media and
podcast host and personality out in the San Francisco area,

(01:23):
host the Damon Bruce Show. My buddy Damon Bruce back
with us here on Sports Radio ninety two to seven WFNZ.
Damon Bruce, how the hell you been?

Speaker 2 (01:30):
What's going on? Hey? I know you're saying it's Monday
for the rest of the world, but if you are
a Panthers fan or you are a Niners fan, this
is your Thanksgiving week football game, and it's a monster Kyle.
I think we got a fistfight on our hands tonight.
Who would have thought when the season came out that
this is like a fork in the road game for

(01:52):
maybe both of these teams. The Niners, decimated by injuries
have done it a hell of a job staying in
the conversation all things consider, and the Carolina Panthers have
turned into a football team that has to be motivated
by a shot for first place. Now you can say
it's a little Carolina, it's a little Tampa coming back
to them in the NFC South, but whatever, you know,

(02:15):
you got to be in it to win it, and
with a win tonight, Carolina is more than in it.
So this is I just think this is a monster
football game and could honestly go either way.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
Oh yeah, mean your division is loaded. I mean right now,
of course tonight San Francisco always looking to prove something,
but prove that they're better than the third best team
in their division. That's always, you know is forty nine
Ers fans typically think more of themselves than that, and
I get it. But I got to say I have
tuned into some Bay Area media the last forty eight
hours or so, and it doesn't seem like your brethren
are talking about this game the way that you are.

(02:47):
Are forty nine Ers fans concerned about this game or
are they looking at this and thinking, well, it's Carolina,
we ought to take care of business.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
It'd be foolish not to be concerned about this game.
The forty nine ers have some built in positions of worry.
Their defense is as average as the day is long.
That right there means you should worry. Their offensive line
is as average as the day is long, and that
means you need to worry about every game. You know
they're best defenders, and Nick bos and Fred Warner will

(03:15):
not be seen the rest of this year. Brock Purdy
did just return, but that's one game, that's four quarters.
Let's see how he looks tonight. I think the forty
nine ers have been a better team on the road
than they've been at home this year. There's so many
moving parts. Trying to predict what kind of performance you're
going to get out of this team has been a

(03:36):
really tough thing to do. I don't think any Niner
fan can afford any arroganinst this year. All that has
gone out the window. The chances of them dominating a
football game, I don't know if they're going to dominate
a game. They can win a lot of games. I
know that. I know that they can find their way
through a game. I know Shanahan's a good enough coach
to find you know, a very decimated line backing core

(04:00):
and know how to deploy Christian McCaffrey against him. But
we'll see. I mean, the Niners got their own problems
and they just can't roll the ball out play with
anybody anymore. They're not that team right now. So any overconfidence,
I think is misplaced investments in this football team.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
Christian McCaffrey. We were talking about this late last week.
It was just a couple of years ago. I was
doing the Reaction show the day after they traded him
to San Francisco for a second, third, fourth, and fifth.
A lot of folks were fine with the deal. Then
it was the end of the Matt Rule era. Time
to blow it up again. He was a running back,
you know. I think a lot of folks understood why
they might want to move on. But he did go
out there and have a great stretch, became the offensive

(04:41):
player of the year. They got to the Super Bowl.
But it doesn't seem like Christian is the same player.
And of course time gets everybody, but it doesn't seem
like he's been the same player this year. What's different
about Christian McCaffrey.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
The offensive line in front of him, the blocking all around,
him and the uncertainty of a defense that is no
longer set you up with decent field because Christian McCaffrey
is still the capital man, and I know that his burst,
some say is not there anymore. This guy is the
forty nine ers offense. He is leading the NFL in

(05:13):
scrimmage yards. Is he supposed to do more than that?
I mean, to me, like that is officially you have
not lost a step level of production when you are
how about I mean, we talk about sho Heyo Tani
being a two way player, and what really makes that
special is he is one of the best hitters and
he is one of the best pitchers. Christian McCaffrey, if

(05:35):
he never carried the ball again, could be nothing short
of a top ten wide receiver in this league. Right now,
he is the ultimate chess piece. He is He's already
one of the greatest forty nine ers of all time. Again.
I was doing a show this morning, a wake up
show about this game with a partner of mine, and

(05:58):
I just said that this is a unique situation for
McCaffrey because this is going to be his first team
against the team that drafted him, and I think he
is already a top five Panther of all time. You
tell me if I'm wrong. It's the guest is followed.
Would you please tell Steve Smith there's nothing about him?
I did not absolutely love that is a football player.

(06:19):
Frick Ice up Son, Steve Smith, love him. It's it's
Steve Smith, Luke Keigley, Julius Peppers, Cam Newton, Christian McCaffrey.
I think Greg Olsen is on the outside of that
looking in. I'm not comfortable taking anyone's name off that
list to put Greg Olsen's on it. He was fabulous,
But those are your top five Panthers of all time,
unless you've got something to tell me that I don't
know about. Mushin Mohammad meant a lot more than I

(06:42):
thought he did well.

Speaker 1 (06:42):
Sam Mills, maybe I think Sam Mills might jump into
some people's top five.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
But I get you.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
I get your point.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
Christian McCaffrey has no chance of probably cracking the Niner
top five. The Niners have more Hall of fame as
many Hall of Fame busts in Canton as the Panthers
have years played as a franchise. In the NFL thirtieth
year for you, they got thirty Hall of Famers, cracking
the Niners top five is impossible. But I'm telling you

(07:10):
right now, if Christian mccaffry, if we had to put
the all time forty nine ers offense out on the field,
Christian McCaffrey is my starting all time forty nine or
running back. Ahead of Frank Gore. He is ahead of
Jose the Jet Perry and your grandfather's memories of him.
He's ahead of Roger Craig. This guy is the greatest
Swiss army knife I have ever seen. He truly is.

(07:32):
On a football field, he can be used and dominate
from just about anywhere, and he is so important. How
often do you see a guy who is, you know,
on both teams? I think kind of all time greatest
players list going against his old team again, this is
pretty special tonight. McCaffrey is the kind of guy though
who I don't know if he gets motivated about things

(07:53):
like that. I just think every game for him is
a let me show you what I can do. And
you got to take Christian McCaffrey for an any time
touchdown if you're a Niners fan, because if he doesn't score,
I'm not sure who does. This team cannot find a
third horse to ride. It has been McCaffrey always and
Kittle sometime, Oh maybe Juwan Jennings one time. Mac Jones

(08:16):
did an incredible job filling in for brock Party. They
can't get that third guy to come along for the ride,
and that's what they're going to need to do because
they got to hide this defense. It is average. They
just let Jacoby Burssett turn into Dan Marino just last week.
And the way that Bryce Young is playing right now,
he could carve this team up before the Thanksgiving dinner

(08:37):
hits the table. I am I'm looking at Bryce Young
to have a big night passing. They better slow down
Dowdell and Hubbard, or again the fifth fight that no
Niner fan wants to admit could break out at Levi's
tonight will break out at lee Bys tonight.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
How much was last week a reminder that Brock Party
is and always was? This franchise is I guess franchise
quarterback a great night in his return, not big yardage,
but three touchdowns. There's a lot of mac Jones chatter,
but I think Brock Party reminded us of some things
last week.

Speaker 2 (09:08):
I think he did too Kyle, and he's a really
good player, and he understands the offense and he can
the real difference between him and Mac Jones. And by
the way, Mac Jones, that's a good football player. Man,
That's a starting caliber NFL quarterback for sure. But Brock
is more mobile than he is, and he knows the

(09:29):
offense better than he does. And he put this team
into plays that won that game in Arizona. I don't
know if Mack could do that, but Mack can put
a football anywhere on the field that it needs to.
He did a hell of a job. It's really odd
Rock Perdy lives in this existence of eighty percent of
the fan base really appreciates him and twenty percent, no

(09:49):
matter what he does, unless he's got a Lombardi trophy
in his teeth, the way a Mattador would carry a
rose out of the ring, it lets he's got a
you know, he's gonna be a bum unless he's got
a Lombardi Trophy. It's the same thing for Kyle Shanahan,
even though he's already the third winning his coach in
the history of this franchise, he's a bum because he

(10:11):
hasn't won a Lombardi Trophy. Yet that's how twenty percent
of the stand base I really thinks about these guys.
They're misled, they're impatient, they're frustrated. I get it. It's
been thirty years since they've won a Super Bowl, but
they still contended an awful lot more. And I mean,
Brod Purdy is the only reason why Shanahan and John
Lynch still have their jobs. He saved this entire franchise

(10:32):
is Bacon, So I don't know why there's so much
conjecture about him. He did play well. I'm glad that
he did. But I'm telling you he is three incomplete
passes in a row away from you know, the Where's Mac?
Where's Mac Jones? Some of it'll happen, fans, you.

Speaker 1 (10:48):
Know it'll happen. I hear you, Hey, before I let
you go, Brandon au kesn suited up out there at
over a year. He got a contract extension, and now
we're talking about them moving on already. Yet again, what's
your read on that situation and why this is happening.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
It's happening because I think the forty nine ers are
that they just have no personnel instincts. This is a
guy who when he was signed to his new deal,
there was instant regret. The opportunity to trade Ayuk was there,
but they were so looking for the ultimate perfect value
trade that they never went ahead and did it, and

(11:24):
they kind of painted themselves into the corner of well,
now you're going to have to spend too much on
a player that you like but for whatever reason, don't love,
and it's just been awkward. I think there are problems
on both sides of that negotiating table. Then there's the injury,
Then there is maybe a maturity factor. It's nuts. It

(11:47):
is kind of crazy that they invested so much in
a guy that they instantly had sticker shock and regret
on when they're the only team that has ever dealt
with him. They drafted the guy. How do you not
know how a guy's going to behave or react when
he's been in your tenth the entire time. It's a
it's a blind spot. I think for the forty nine ers,
I think that John Lynch is a good general manager,

(12:10):
easily improved upon by maybe some new eyes. I think
that John Lynch should be kicked up to, not fired,
not thrown out, but kicked up to some president get
him out of the decision making room. This team needs
to start drafting better. Their problems are because they have
not drafted better. And Brandon Ayuk is now you know,

(12:31):
another player that looked like it was going to happen
but clearly is not. And they're still talk that they
think he might play again this year. If you're Brandon Ayuk,
why would you step on the field with no guaranteed
dollars in your future? I think we've seen the last
of them in a Niner uniform. How about that?

Speaker 1 (12:47):
Damon Bruce, host of the Damon Bruce Show, Long Time
Fixed your sports radio podcast, personality in the Bay, joining
us ahead of tonight's massive Monday night football game at
Levi Stadium. Damon, always great hearing your voice, brother, Thank
you for the time. Enjoying the game tonight.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
