Dialekte gibt es unter Menschen – und auch bei Tieren. Sie entstehen, wenn sich Populationen auf Reise begeben und in verschiedenen Regionen niederlassen. So war es zumindest bei der Großen Sackflügelfledermaus, die in Südamerika lebt. Die Fledermausarten, die aus der Ausbreitung hervorgingen, verstehen sich heute aufgrund ihrer verschiedenen Dialekte nicht mehr.
