Have you ever spotted a random photo, meme, recipe, or video in your Camera Roll and wondered:

"Wait... where did that come from?"

In this Tiny Task, we're tackling one of the most common sources of photo confusion on the iPhone.

Sometimes photos and videos appear in your Photos Library even though you don't remember saving them. The reason? Certain settings in Messages and WhatsApp may be automatically displaying or saving content to your Camera Roll without you realizing it.

In today's episode, we introduce the concept of "Camo Clutter" — photos and videos that quietly sneak into your photo collection and make it harder to understand what actually lives in your library.

Missed the Last Tiny Task?

Before tackling today's Tiny Task, we recommend starting with:

Tiny Task #1: Explore Your Photos App

In that episode, we explored the two main areas of the Photos app — Library and Collections — and spent some time simply getting familiar with the space where our photos live.

In This Episode

You'll learn:

📱 What the Shared With You feature does in Apple's Messages app

📸 Why photos can appear in your Camera Roll without actually being saved there

🗑️ Why some photos seem to "disappear" when message threads are deleted

✅ How to turn off Shared With You in Messages

📲 How WhatsApp can automatically save photos and videos to your Photos Library

⚙️ How to turn off automatic saving in WhatsApp

🎯 Why taking control of what enters your Camera Roll can reduce confusion and clutter

Today's Tiny Tasks
  1. Turn off Shared With You in Messages
  2. Turn off Save to Photos in WhatsApp (if you use WhatsApp)

The goal isn't perfection.

The goal is simply understanding one more pathway that photos can take into your collection so you can feel more confident about what actually lives in your library.

Coming Up Next

In our next Tiny Task, we'll explore Shared Albums — another place where photos can appear, be shared, and sometimes create confusion about where they actually live.

One tiny task. One small pocket of time. One step closer to understanding where your photos actually live.

Have you ever been scrolling through your phone and thought, "Wait a minute, where did that photo come from?" Maybe it's a meme someone texted you, a recipe from a friend, a funny video from a family group chat, or a photo someone shared in WhatsApp that somehow ended up sitting right beside your vacation and your child's birthday pictures, and suddenly you're wondering, "Did I save that or did my phone save that? And if I can see it in my camera roll, AKA photos library, does that mean it actually lives in my photo library?". 2 00:00:31,465.999 --> 00:00:34,325.999 Today, we're solving one small piece of that big mystery. 3 00:00:35,245.999 --> 00:00:36,425.999 Welcome back to Sorted Out. 4 00:00:36,535.999 --> 00:00:42,525.998 We are Christie and Amanda, childhood best friends turned professional photo organizers, and we are so glad that you're here. 5 00:00:43,125.999 --> 00:00:46,85.999 This podcast is all about photo organizing made simple. 6 00:00:46,435.999 --> 00:00:52,565.998 No guilt, no overwhelm, mixed with real-life mom moments and everyday lessons we are learning right alongside you. 7 00:00:52,975.998 --> 00:00:59,845.998 We're moms, we're busy, and life is messy, so around here, we're focused on progress, not perfection. 8 00:01:00,495.997 --> 00:01:04,605.997 And today, we're continuing our Where Are My Photos? Tiny Task series. 9 00:01:05,575.997 --> 00:01:09,975.997 In our last tiny task, we spent some time simply getting comfortable inside the Photos app. 10 00:01:10,115.997 --> 00:01:14,705.997 No organizing, no deleting, no fixing, just exploring. 11 00:01:15,25.997 --> 00:01:25,676.377356127 So I hope you sat down, took a little bit of time, and really started to get comfortable inside your Photos app Because before you can organize your photos, it does help to understand the space where they live. 12 00:01:26,296.377356127 --> 00:01:34,556.376356127 And today's tiny task builds on that idea, we're looking at one of the most common sources of confusion we see when helping people understand their photo collections. 13 00:01:35,126.377356127 --> 00:01:49,249.1966077 How did that photo or video get into my camera roll? Great question because sometimes things show up in our photo library that we don't remember saving, this tiny task will show that you never did because sometimes they got there automatically. 14 00:01:50,119.1966077 --> 00:01:58,232.52994103 Today we're gonna look at a few settings inside Messages and WhatsApp that may be quietly adding photos and videos to your library without you even realizing it. 15 00:01:58,462.01611697 --> 00:02:03,932.01511697 Let's dive right into this tiny task that addresses what Amanda likes to refer to as camo clutter. 16 00:02:04,262.01611697 --> 00:02:08,222.01711697 That's right, Clutter that is camouflaged so it's able to sneak right up on you. 17 00:02:08,722.01711697 --> 00:02:10,352.01711697 Well, that's how it works in her head anyway. 18 00:02:10,582.01711697 --> 00:02:15,212.01611697 Actually, now that, uh, now that I say that out loud, it actually works like that in my head too. 19 00:02:15,539.13572823 --> 00:02:21,929.13572823 So there is a sneaky little feature in your settings on your iPhone that we recommend you turn off. 20 00:02:22,349.13572823 --> 00:02:26,609.13472823 I'll explain what it is and why we want you to turn it off, and then I'll tell you how to do it. 21 00:02:26,949.13572823 --> 00:02:39,59.13572823 So back in 2021, I think, Apple introduced this Shared with You feature that maybe sounded like a good idea to them, but to us photo managers, It just added to the chaos we're all trying to sift through all the time. 22 00:02:39,479.13572823 --> 00:02:45,639.13572823 So unless you turn the Shared with You feature off way back then, it may still be causing you confusion in your life. 23 00:02:45,902.46906156 --> 00:02:56,332.46806156 What does Shared with You actually mean? It means that every photo or video that is shared with you in your text messages app will also show up in your photos library. 24 00:02:56,782.46806156 --> 00:02:57,462.46906156 Think about that. 25 00:02:57,862.46906156 --> 00:03:12,715.80139489 How many photos do people text you? Probably a lot it appears, and I'll explain what I mean by appears in a moment, but it appears in your camera roll/library view and in a special section in your collections view called Shared with You. 26 00:03:13,255.80239489 --> 00:03:23,195.80239489 Remember, to see your library and your collection view, if you go into your Photos app and look down to the bottom left, you'll see Library view or Collection view. 27 00:03:23,215.80239489 --> 00:03:24,695.80239489 So that's what I'm talking about right now. 28 00:03:24,928.06770102 --> 00:03:33,478.06770102 So again, it appears in your camera roll/library view and in that special section in your collections view called Shared With You. 29 00:03:34,18.06770102 --> 00:03:35,488.06770102 But here's the camouflage part. 30 00:03:35,798.06770102 --> 00:03:36,878.06770102 Suspenseful, I know. 31 00:03:37,158.06770102 --> 00:03:40,218.06770102 The photo does not live in your camera roll. 32 00:03:40,411.40103435 --> 00:03:48,921.40103435 So if this Shared With You option is toggled on, photos that are texted to you now show up in your camera roll, but they are not saved there. 33 00:03:49,461.40103435 --> 00:03:53,111.40103435 Once you delete that message thread, the photos will also delete. 34 00:03:53,501.40103435 --> 00:04:00,861.40103435 This often causes great confusion for photos that users believe just vanished from their camera roll, and obviously we can see why. 35 00:04:01,34.73436768 --> 00:04:03,694.73436768 So we suggest this as your tiny task. 36 00:04:03,924.73436768 --> 00:04:14,224.73436768 Turn off Shared With You So that we're working towards having a straightforward library where what you see in your camera roll is what is actually saved there. 37 00:04:15,86.53927492 --> 00:04:19,676.53927492 So if you pick up your iPhone, this is how you're going to be able to toggle that Shared with You off. 38 00:04:20,236.53927492 --> 00:04:31,916.53927492 You're gonna go into Settings, you're gonna click on Apps, you're gonna click on Messages, and you're gonna click on Shared with You, and you're gonna toggle it off. 39 00:04:32,786.53927492 --> 00:04:38,896.53927492 Or if you go into your settings, look at the very bottom of the screen and you'll see a little search bar. 40 00:04:39,406.53927492 --> 00:04:46,936.53927492 You can actually just search Shared with You, and magically, boom, you're in the exact same spot, and then you can toggle this feature off. 41 00:04:47,232.66574351 --> 00:04:53,992.66674351 When you turn that off, the photos in your Message app will no longer show up in your Photos library automatically. 42 00:04:54,522.66674351 --> 00:05:01,822.66574351 Photos shared with you in your Messages app will now only show up in your Photos library if you manually save the photos. 43 00:05:02,462.66574351 --> 00:05:03,262.66574351 Straightforward. 44 00:05:03,792.66574351 --> 00:05:17,254.66674351 Same process every time And no more confusion if that photo actually lives in the library or if you're just seeing it there And as a side note, once you turn this option off, it shouldn't typically turn back on with Apple updates. 45 00:05:17,404.66674351 --> 00:05:21,714.66674351 However, if you purchase a new phone, sometimes it may revert back to the default setting. 46 00:05:22,104.66674351 --> 00:05:29,764.66574351 If you see that anything is auto-populating, head to settings, click on that particular app, and now you know how to turn off this kind of feature. 47 00:05:29,924.66474351 --> 00:05:30,654.66574351 Very helpful. 48 00:05:30,894.57377298 --> 00:05:38,434.57327298 And actually this is a two-for-one Tiny Task special today because WhatsApp falls into a similar category, yet slightly different. 49 00:05:38,994.57427298 --> 00:05:58,464.57427298 Much like the Shared With You option in the Messages app, if this similar feature is turned on in your WhatsApp settings, the photos and videos shared in messages in WhatsApp will also automatically show up in your photos library, just like they did from your Messages app, except this time they will automatically be saved there. 50 00:05:59,14.57427298 --> 00:06:09,766.54479453 So think if you have been sent, videos and photos in your WhatsApp from like a work group or something like that, do you really want those automatically saved into your library? Mm, probably not. 51 00:06:10,163.87812786 --> 00:06:17,713.87812786 So this is why we suggest you turn these features off in today's tiny task so that what enters your camera roll is in your control. 52 00:06:18,58.42461312 --> 00:06:26,998.42461312 So your second tiny task for today is to also turn off this feature in WhatsApp so that anything shared in that app will no longer be automatically saved to your camera roll. 53 00:06:27,528.42461312 --> 00:06:34,518.42361312 If you wanna keep any of those photos or videos shared from there, you just have to, again, manually save them yourself, which is perfect. 54 00:06:34,841.75794645 --> 00:06:39,681.75794645 To turn off the automatic save to your photos option in WhatsApp, you're just gonna do the following. 55 00:06:39,926.20012332 --> 00:06:51,986.20012332 Click on to your WhatsApp app, and you're gonna go into the settings, which is usually found down at the bottom right if you see your little profile picture, or if you don't have a picture, it'll just be like a little profile, uh, circle. 56 00:06:52,206.20012332 --> 00:06:53,626.20012332 You're gonna click onto that. 57 00:06:53,876.20012332 --> 00:06:55,646.20012332 Then you're gonna click on chats. 58 00:06:55,876.20012332 --> 00:06:59,526.19912332 Then you're gonna click save to photos and toggle it off. 59 00:06:59,866.20012332 --> 00:07:00,446.20012332 Voila. 60 00:07:00,576.20012332 --> 00:07:02,76.20012332 Control of the camera roll. 61 00:07:02,439.03849918 --> 00:07:08,89.03949918 Remember, we offer suggestions, but it's always up to you to keep what works for you and leave what doesn't. 62 00:07:08,559.03949918 --> 00:07:31,19.03949918 So we'll be revisiting the WhatsApp topic a little bit more in depth in the coming weeks when we tackle the popular Google Search question of: How do I actually find my photos? So I'll leave you with that cliffhanger because even though this tiny task may have helped you control the saving chaos, there is much more to learn and do around the WhatsApp trickery when it comes to the finding the photos you just saved from that app. 63 00:07:31,79.03949918 --> 00:07:32,509.04049918 So we'll leave it there. 64 00:07:33,74.83762665 --> 00:07:39,390.29543634 In the photo organizing world, it's not very easy to, uh, create a cliffhanger, but, um, maybe I just did? A question mark. 65 00:07:39,648.58005799 --> 00:07:41,848.58005799 So that's it for today's tiny task. 66 00:07:41,928.58005799 --> 00:07:48,418.57905799 Two small settings, a little less confusion, and a little more control over what actually ends up in your camera roll. 67 00:07:48,818.58005799 --> 00:07:50,208.58005799 The goal isn't perfection. 68 00:07:50,318.58005799 --> 00:08:07,559.14468384 It's simply understanding One more pathway that photos can take and sneak into your photo collection And if you've been keeping that photo organizing notebook nearby, this might be a good time to jot down any questions that come up while you're checking your settings because we're gonna keep building on this, which is the whole point of these tiny tasks. 69 00:08:08,229.14368384 --> 00:08:17,489.14368384 In our next tiny task, we'll be exploring shared albums, another place where photos can appear, be shared, and sometimes create a little confusion about where they actually live. 70 00:08:17,699.14368384 --> 00:08:24,655.81135051 And I know this personally because when I first got my iPhone a million years ago, the albums and shared albums r-really messed me up. 71 00:08:24,915.81135051 --> 00:08:29,405.81135051 I had to, again, enter Amanda's brain, and she had to help me, uh, sort out what was going on in there. 72 00:08:29,918.74751729 --> 00:08:35,498.74751729 We'll help you understand what shared albums are, what they're good for, and how they fit into your overall photo world. 73 00:08:35,688.74751729 --> 00:08:41,848.74551729 One tiny task, one small pocket of time, one step closer to understanding where your photos actually live. 74 00:08:42,308.74551729 --> 00:08:46,228.74651729 Take what fits, leave what doesn't, and we'll see you next time on Sort It Out.
