She went from straight A student to homeless alcoholic. The difference today? She stopped hiding and started living in the solution.
Keisha W., affectionately known as "Polka," spent most of her life trying to look okay on the outside while quietly falling apart on the inside.
A top student, athlete, and people pleaser, she never felt like she truly belonged. Alcohol quickly became the answer. Just two days into college, she landed in the hospital with alcohol poisoning, but that was only the beginning.
Over the next decade, Keisha mastered the art of hiding her drinking. Even after a devastating car accident left her temporarily paralyzed, even after her first exposure to recovery, she continued trying to manage life on her own terms.
Eventually, the walls came down.
Surrounded by empty bottles, isolated from the people she loved, and living in what she describes as incomprehensible demoralization, Keisha reached a point where she could no longer hide from the truth.
In this powerful episode of The Cup of Joe Show, Keisha shares how detox, sober living, sponsorship, and the women of her recovery tribe helped her find a new way to live.
She opens up about homelessness, relapse, making amends, and the life-changing moment she stopped trying to survive and started living in the solution.
Today, Keisha is a woman in recovery who stays connected, stays teachable, and "stays loose for change."
As she reminds us, even the smallest light can bring hope into a dark room.
