35,000,000 applied for citizenship
According to the Carnegie Corporation of New York, nearly 35 million non-U.S.
citizens had applications pending for green cards as of 2024
However, the information states that about 818,500 legal U.S. residents became naturalized
citizens in fiscal year 2024..
It is important to note that the 35 million figure likely refers to the total number
of non-U.S. citizens with pending applications for green cards, not necessarily
applications for naturalization (citizenship). The U.S. government caps the
number of green cards issued annually at just over one million, which means a
large number of these applicants will face long waiting periods
