Speaker 1 (00:04):
Hello, and welcome to the forty nine Ers First and
ten podcast presented by Cisco. I'm your host Brian McDonald
with forty nine Ers team reporter Lindsay Plarz, and today
we're diving into off season news with the NFL scouting
combine going on. Lindsay General manager John Lynch talked on
Wednesday morning Wednesday afternoon covering some of the biggest topics
(00:25):
in Niners off season. First thing he talked about, first
question asked to him, was regarding Rock Party and contract negotiations.
What do we know so far?
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Yeah, so I would say that Niners fans, you can
definitely feel encouraged by the small bit of news we got,
as you've kind of seen a pattern with contract negotiations
in this organization. They like to keep things close to
the vest right, and that's just for privacy on both sides.
I think it's out of respect for the players also
their representation teams. But what we do know Rock Party
(00:57):
contract negotiations have started, So that's positive news. It's very
early in the off season, and again, not much more
than that other than yes, it is a topic of discussion,
and he did say that there is an enthusiasm on
both sides to get something done. This is definitely something
that is going to extend a little bit farther into
(01:17):
the off season. As we get more details, we'll definitely
fill you in.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
And this is really encouraging for all the Brock party
fans in the Bay Area. All the nine are faithful
out here. John Lynch said, we want Brock to be
our quarterback as long as we're here and beyond. So
great news so far. We'll see how this unfolds throughout
the off season. But it wasn't just Brock that they
covered in that press conference today. There is a lot
of other players. We hit a lot of them who
(01:41):
are dealing with injuries during that twenty twenty four season
and they're still ongoing. Top of mind, Trent Williams, Christian McCaffrey,
Bandon Ayuk on the offense. We'll start with Trent. How
is he doing so far? It sounds like good news
so far on that front.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
The word from John Lynch ready to go and motivated
to have a good twin twenty five season super encouraging.
Just a little bit of a refresher. Lots of injuries
for the forty nine ers in twenty twenty four. Trent
William All Pro left tackle. He wasn't able to finish
the season, did not play those last seven games. The
(02:15):
last time we saw him Week eleven against the Seattle Seahawks,
suffered a left ankle injury. Positive news. There also positive
news on Christian McCaffrey. What is the latest.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
Yeah, well with Christian McCaffrey again. The last time we
saw him was against the Buffalo Bills in that snowstorm
of a game that was gone off the rails there.
But Christian McCaffrey is doing well right now, and what
we heard from John Lynch is that he may be
available in parts of the off season program. So having
Trent and cmc in the offense for the Niners is
going to be super impactful, not only on the playing field,
(02:48):
but with Trent again, this is probably going to be
his fourteenth season playing in the NFL this upcoming year,
and not only is he a game changer out on
the field, but he's a leader in the locker room.
He's a captain and a mentor in same time with
Christian McCaffrey as a veteran player. So having those two
ready ready to go and motivated to start this new season,
it'll be really good. And speaking of injury updates, we've
(03:09):
also got Brandon and you to look out for. What
do we know about his situation so far?
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yeah, so definitely one of the tougher injuries of twenty
twenty four. Again, just a refresher towards ACL MCL along
with other ligaments, has undergone surgery. So the next couple
of weeks are going to be really important for Brandon Ayuk.
John Lynch said that there is a benchmark test that's
going to be coming in the next couple weeks that
(03:34):
will really give the team a little bit more clarity
about where he is in the recovery process. No one
expected this to be an easy recovery process, but I
think he said anecdotally it's looking good, So I think
you can take the positive from that wait and see,
and I do feel like that is a lot of
the off season updates We're gonna have to wait and see.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
Yes, And speaking of brock Party at the top of
the podcast, there's also been a lot of changes to
the coaching staff. There was a list of about fourteen
coaches that are announced as hiring or a changing of
title under Kyle Shanahan, and we've got a lot with
the offensive side. At the top of the podcast, we
talked about Brock Party and his contract negotiations starting, and
(04:15):
someone who had a huge hand in developing brock Party
was quarterbacks coach Brian Greasy. He's no longer with the
team anymore. Can you tell us about what the developments
are there?
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Yeah, So, Brian Gracie has been part of the forty
nine Ers coaching staff for the last three seasons. It
sounds like from what Lynch said, that was his initial
commitment to coaching, he fulfilled that he is going to
be stepping away was his decision. It all sounds amicable.
It was a decision really driven by just wanting to
spend more time with his family. We saw it earlier
in the offseason. Also that Greasy did decline an interview
(04:47):
request from the Jets because he didn't want to coach
in twenty twenty five. So again that's something we're wishing
him well and again really really highly regarded by the
forty nine Ers coaching staff. But we aren't going to
have Nick Lombardi stepping in as the quarterbacks coach for
the twenty twenty five season.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
Yes, Nick Lombardi served as the senior offensive assistant with
the Niners, so he's super familiar with the team. It
will be a super easy transition with him coming in
at quarterback coach and a few other coaching staff changes.
Defensive coordinator Robert Sala he's in, and John Lynch that
it's awesome to have him back working with the team.
Special teams corodinator Brant Boyer. What do we know about
Brant and what does experience does he bring to the
(05:25):
forty nine ers.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Yeah, so Brent Boyer actually comes from the New York Jets,
so coincidentally, obviously he was with Robert Sala and John
Lynch mentioned that Sala was a great reference point for him,
but he was highly recommended from a lot of the
special teams community around the league. One thing I do
want to point out nine seasons with the New York
Jets and during that time survived three head coaching changes,
(05:49):
so you know that that is someone that different regimes
have trusted. He had a big hand in developing all
Pro returners during his time. They're a really really good get.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
For the four awesome And then offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak
that completes the trifecta of coordinators under head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Klay Kubiak is in now his fifth season with the team.
He was previously the offensive passing game specialist, assistant quarterback coach,
and defensive quality control coach. What makes Clay interesting as
the offensive coordinator now with the Niners this.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Year, someone very familiar with the team, obviously the son
of Super Bowl winning head coach Gary Kubiak, and I
think what was really cool he got his chance to
call plays both in the preseason and then that final
Week eighteen game. He has had a very large hand
in the game planning process. With Kyle Shannan, he will
not be the offensive play caller, but will continue to
(06:41):
develop under Kyle Shanahan. We still have more news and
players to follow contract situations, so let's just start with
the list right because it's a long one. We've got
linebacker Dray Greenlaw, safety Talanoa Hufanga, tightened George Kittle, full
back kyleie use Check, also wide receiver Deebo Samuel, so
(07:03):
let's start there. We saw that Deebo Samuel did request
a trade at the start of the off season. I
will say, it all sounds very amicable. What Lynch did
say today that there's a lot of love, there, a
lot of shared experience, and that the organization is going
to do their best to honor his request.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
Yeah. Something Lynch highlighted today in the press conference is
that Debo was just looking for the fresh start, and
the Niners are looking to honor that. So it looks
like both teams are looking to new chapters and again,
like you said, very amical on both sides, ready to
start again fresh than new year.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
One of the parts of the press conference I really
enjoyed is just a light moment, is that you can
never rule out any possibilities, especially as you're going through
these contract situations, So never rule out maybe he's back
next season. We've seen that over the years. Anything can happen.
It's a long off season, so again, you know, stay
posted on that because anything can happen.
Speaker 1 (07:57):
And when we're talking player statuses throughout the office season,
nothing is ever set in stone. So I guess we'll
just have to wait and see as everything unfolds. But
faithful that will do it for today's episode. Thank you
for tuning in. You can check us out on Spotify.
